Supernatural Season 4, Episode 18, The Monster at the End of This Book recap 📚 Sam and Dean discover a series of books about two brothers named Sam and Dean, and its author, Chuck Shurley (Rob Benedict), seems to know EVERYTHING, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. (Fun fact: the title is a nod to the Sesame Street book starring Grover.)

Posing as FBI agents, the boys find a comic shop owner who's convinced they're cosplaying characters from a cult book series written by Carver Edlund (a mashup of Supernatural writers Jeremy Carver and our favorite, Ben Edlund). The books are all about their lives, from the very first hunt, and the fans have a LOT of opinions about the brothers' relationship. The boys track down the publisher, then Chuck himself, who's been living in his bathrobe with a bottle of whiskey and having visions of the Winchesters' lives as they happen. Is Chuck a writer, a psychic, or something else entirely?

Episode Highlights:

  • Our first look at Chuck: sleeping on the couch in his boxers
  • The boys learning they're fictional characters
  • The fans, and the Wincest (Sam and Dean have questions)
  • Chuck thinking the boys are his number one fans, and being a little scared of them
  • Jensen's voice dropping to match Misha's gravelly Cas (a Soldier Boy preview!)
  • Castiel and Zachariah on Chuck's VERY important status
  • Sam, Lilith, and a temptation he swears he'd never give in to
  • The dramatic build-up to Chuck's big moment

In the lore segment, we dig into what makes a prophet, according to biblical tradition, how prophets received their visions, the strangest prophet in the Bible (Balaam and his talking donkey), and the tests for spotting a false prophet. (We could totally pass. Chuck in a bathrobe on a couch would not).

"I'm sitting in a laundromat, reading about myself sitting in a laundromat, reading about myself. My head hurts." – Dean Winchester
