Supernatural Season 4, Episode 20, The Rapture recap 🪽 We finally meet Jimmy Novak, the man Castiel has been wearing all season, and Misha Collins plays two completely different people, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast. Plus, we're back after a little break, and still finding our groove.

Dean is fishing on a beautiful, serene lake (a dream, obviously) when Cas appears with an urgent message, then vanishes mid-sentence. The boys track down Cas's vessel, and find Jimmy Novak instead: a devout family man who hasn't eaten in months, has no idea what Cas needed to tell Dean, and just wants to go home to his wife, Amelia, and daughter, Claire. But demons want what's in Jimmy's head, angels want his body back, and his family is in the crosshairs. Meanwhile, Sam's running low on something, and that's a problem.

Episode Highlights:

  • Misha Collins playing Jimmy vs. Cas, and nailing both
  • Jimmy's arm in a pot of boiling water (how did they DO that?)
  • Jimmy and the cheeseburgers (the man hasn't eaten in months)
  • Jimmy's backstory as Cas's vessel, and the faith that got him there
  • Anna popping into the Impala's backseat and Dean immediately hitting on her ("Not now, Dean").
  • Hiding his family... and Amelia getting a little too close
  • Claire's big moment (we had chills)
  • Jimmy's heartbreaking choice
  • Sam's secret, out in the open (YIKES)

In the lore segment, we dig into angelic possession: how angels came to be pictured as winged humans, St. Augustine's theory that angels can take on physical bodies, and Prophet Kent Simpson's case for angels possessing people the same way demons do (if it means flipping over a burning school bus, sign us up), plus why angels and demons both need vessels on Earth (so they don't burn out our eyes, apparently).

"I learned my lesson while I was away, Dean. I serve heaven. I don't serve man. And I certainly don't serve you." – Castiel
