Well, if you look also,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":147.3,"endTime":151.59,"body":"at the span of how many people"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":151.59,"endTime":154.77,"body":"have been involved in the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":151.59,"endTime":154.77,"body":"military over all of American"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":154.77,"endTime":159.27,"body":"history, you're talking about"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":154.77,"endTime":159.27,"body":"roughly 57 million people who"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":159.27,"endTime":164.28,"body":"have served in the military in"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":159.27,"endTime":164.28,"body":"some capacity, and only 3500."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":164.31,"endTime":169.11,"body":"I've received a medal of honor."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":164.31,"endTime":169.11,"body":"This is a very elite group to be"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":169.11,"endTime":172.08,"body":"in and Christian Fleetwood is in"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":169.11,"endTime":172.08,"body":"that very elite group. He"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":175.86,"endTime":179.1,"body":"received the Medal of Honor for"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":179.1,"endTime":181.95,"body":"protecting the American flag."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":179.1,"endTime":181.95,"body":"And this is certainly something"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":181.95,"endTime":186.27,"body":"contrary to the 1619 project"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":181.95,"endTime":186.27,"body":"contrary to this wokeism"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":186.27,"endTime":188.43,"body":"critical race theory that"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":186.27,"endTime":188.43,"body":"promotes that America's evil"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":188.43,"endTime":191.16,"body":"and, and the flag has been"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":188.43,"endTime":191.16,"body":"oppressive. That's not the way"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":191.16,"endTime":194.97,"body":"it was viewed in the Civil War."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":191.16,"endTime":194.97,"body":"And certainly not what Christian"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":196.86,"endTime":200.19,"body":"Fleetwood thought as he was"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":196.86,"endTime":200.19,"body":"defending or upholding the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":200.19,"endTime":200.97,"body":"American flag."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":201.59,"endTime":204.11,"body":"Christian"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":201.59,"endTime":204.11,"body":"Fleetwood grew up in Maryland,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":204.11,"endTime":207.35,"body":"and he grew up working with anti"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":204.11,"endTime":207.35,"body":"slavery movement, the Maryland"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":207.35,"endTime":210.38,"body":"Colonization Society and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":207.35,"endTime":210.38,"body":"organizations like that. And in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":210.38,"endTime":213.77,"body":"1863, when Abraham Lincoln"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":210.38,"endTime":213.77,"body":"issued the Emancipation"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":213.77,"endTime":217.01,"body":"Proclamation, Christians in the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":213.77,"endTime":217.01,"body":"north, not the South, and the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":217.01,"endTime":219.56,"body":"Emancipation Proclamation's for"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":217.01,"endTime":219.56,"body":"the South. But one of the things"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":219.56,"endTime":222.62,"body":"Lincoln did with that is he"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":219.56,"endTime":222.62,"body":"encouraged black soldiers to"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":222.62,"endTime":225.5,"body":"enlist and fight for the Union."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":222.62,"endTime":225.5,"body":"And Christian did that he went"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":225.5,"endTime":228.41,"body":"and enlisted. And he got"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":225.5,"endTime":228.41,"body":"involved in action and was"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":228.41,"endTime":230.45,"body":"fighting in North Carolina,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":228.41,"endTime":230.45,"body":"other states as well."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":230.49,"endTime":232.17,"body":"And just to keep in"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":230.49,"endTime":232.17,"body":"mind, he's been a free man his"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":232.17,"endTime":237.21,"body":"whole life. So he was born into"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":232.17,"endTime":237.21,"body":"a free family. And he lived with"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":237.21,"endTime":239.85,"body":"freedom his whole life, but he"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":237.21,"endTime":239.85,"body":"still recognized the value"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":239.85,"endTime":242.91,"body":"significance of going to sign up"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":239.85,"endTime":242.91,"body":"to be a part of the military to"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":242.91,"endTime":246.63,"body":"fight for the freedom of other"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":242.91,"endTime":246.63,"body":"slaves and really to preserve"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":246.63,"endTime":249.54,"body":"the Union. So he signs up,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":246.63,"endTime":249.54,"body":"recruit other people to be"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":249.54,"endTime":252.87,"body":"involved. So he's part of the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":249.54,"endTime":252.87,"body":"Civil War later in the Civil"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":252.0,"endTime":253.77,"body":"And in the first"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":252.0,"endTime":253.77,"body":"part of the Civil War, you had a"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":252.87,"endTime":253.23,"body":"War."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":254.7,"endTime":258.03,"body":"lot of battles that were kind of"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":254.7,"endTime":258.03,"body":"quick move, and you had calvarys"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":258.03,"endTime":259.86,"body":"charging eachother, he showed"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":258.03,"endTime":259.86,"body":"that you get an open field and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":259.86,"endTime":262.62,"body":"fight and then leave and find"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":259.86,"endTime":262.62,"body":"another place for battle. By the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":262.62,"endTime":264.84,"body":"time you get to the middle, the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":262.62,"endTime":264.84,"body":"end of the war, you were into"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":264.84,"endTime":268.5,"body":"sieges. And this is where"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":264.84,"endTime":268.5,"body":"Christian became famous who was"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":268.5,"endTime":272.34,"body":"in the siege, the larger siege"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":268.5,"endTime":272.34,"body":"of Richmond and Petersburg, it"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":272.34,"endTime":276.36,"body":"was a 10 month battle. And that"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":272.34,"endTime":276.36,"body":"10 month battle had a whole lot,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":276.36,"endTime":279.84,"body":"probably couple dozen smaller"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":276.36,"endTime":279.84,"body":"battles tucked into it. And one"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":279.84,"endTime":282.78,"body":"of those smaller battles was the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":279.84,"endTime":282.78,"body":"Battle of Chaffin's Farm and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":282.78,"endTime":285.69,"body":"it's in that battle for what"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":282.78,"endTime":285.69,"body":"Christian did in that battle."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":285.69,"endTime":288.21,"body":"They received the Medal of"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":285.69,"endTime":288.21,"body":"Honor. And so what happened in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":288.21,"endTime":291.57,"body":"that... by the way, that was a"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":288.21,"endTime":291.57,"body":"really bloody business. That one"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":291.57,"endTime":296.7,"body":"battle alone resulted in 5000"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":291.57,"endTime":296.7,"body":"casualties on just one day. So"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":296.73,"endTime":299.88,"body":"this is what happened and again,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":296.73,"endTime":299.88,"body":"the siege warfare. Each side is"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":299.88,"endTime":302.7,"body":"kind hunkered down, they dig"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":299.88,"endTime":302.7,"body":"entrenchments. And they dig pits"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":302.7,"endTime":305.43,"body":"and they protect themselves from"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":302.7,"endTime":305.43,"body":"cannons. It's not like running"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":305.43,"endTime":308.82,"body":"across an open field like"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":305.43,"endTime":308.82,"body":"Gettysburg. This, this is really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":308.82,"endTime":311.49,"body":"entrenched warfare. So as you"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":308.82,"endTime":311.49,"body":"start attacking the other side,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":311.73,"endTime":314.49,"body":"you're attacking people that are"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":311.73,"endTime":314.49,"body":"well defended, and it's really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":314.49,"endTime":317.73,"body":"tough. And so as they started"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":314.49,"endTime":317.73,"body":"out, he said that in his company"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":317.73,"endTime":321.66,"body":"that morning, they had 350"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":317.73,"endTime":321.66,"body":"soldiers and 11 officers, and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":321.66,"endTime":324.06,"body":"they started charging the enemy."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":321.66,"endTime":324.06,"body":"And as they did, they just"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":324.06,"endTime":328.44,"body":"started getting mowed down. And"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":324.06,"endTime":328.44,"body":"as he was beside Alfred Hilton,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":328.44,"endTime":330.99,"body":"who was an officer, and he"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":328.44,"endTime":330.99,"body":"himself had become an officer"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":330.99,"endTime":333.6,"body":"fairly quickly, he went from"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":330.99,"endTime":333.6,"body":"private Sergeant Major, really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":333.6,"endTime":336.87,"body":"quick. As he's going forward, he"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":333.6,"endTime":336.87,"body":"saw that Alfred Hilton beside"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":336.87,"endTime":340.32,"body":"him got shot and Alfred Hilton"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":336.87,"endTime":340.32,"body":"was carrying the flags. And by"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":340.32,"endTime":343.23,"body":"the way, being a flag carrier"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":340.32,"endTime":343.23,"body":"back in the Civil War, is like"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":343.23,"endTime":346.56,"body":"being in charge of that part of"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":343.23,"endTime":346.56,"body":"the battle. everything revolved"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":346.56,"endTime":349.2,"body":"around the flag if the flag"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":346.56,"endTime":349.2,"body":"rotated, right, that's where"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":349.2,"endTime":351.63,"body":"everybody went, because they"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":349.2,"endTime":351.63,"body":"didn't have communications."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":351.78,"endTime":354.42,"body":"There was no way you could hear"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":351.78,"endTime":354.42,"body":"among all the cannons and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":354.42,"endTime":357.63,"body":"everything else. So Alfred Hilton"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":362.91,"endTime":366.03,"body":"went down and before he hit the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":362.91,"endTime":366.03,"body":"ground, Christian dropped his"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":366.03,"endTime":369.24,"body":"gun and grabbed the flag, he"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":366.03,"endTime":369.24,"body":"contended charge.
