In fact,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":91.47,"endTime":94.2,"body":"even that night, he wasn't the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":91.47,"endTime":94.2,"body":"only guy that rode that night."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":94.2,"endTime":97.29,"body":"But over the next several years,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":94.2,"endTime":97.29,"body":"and really even over the next"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":97.29,"endTime":100.05,"body":"several months, every time the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":97.29,"endTime":100.05,"body":"British were taking troops and"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":100.05,"endTime":103.05,"body":"relocating going somewhere,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":100.05,"endTime":103.05,"body":"there were often Americans who"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":103.05,"endTime":106.59,"body":"would ride before them alerting"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":103.05,"endTime":106.59,"body":"the other Americans that were in"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":106.59,"endTime":109.38,"body":"their path and British were"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":106.59,"endTime":109.38,"body":"coming and helping the militias"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":109.38,"endTime":111.84,"body":"and the military get prepared"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":109.38,"endTime":111.84,"body":"and defend. One of the guys who"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":111.84,"endTime":114.9,"body":"made a very famous one of those"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":111.84,"endTime":114.9,"body":"midnight rise was Wentworth"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":114.93,"endTime":118.11,"body":"Cheswell. And Wentworth Cheswell"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":114.93,"endTime":118.11,"body":"was not only a black patriot,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":118.11,"endTime":120.75,"body":"his background's kind of"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":118.11,"endTime":120.75,"body":"interesting. And Dad, he's"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":120.75,"endTime":123.57,"body":"somebody you've talked about for"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":120.75,"endTime":123.57,"body":"many years. But if you back up,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":123.81,"endTime":127.47,"body":"his grandfather was a slave in"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":123.81,"endTime":127.47,"body":"the early 1700s. In America in"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":127.47,"endTime":131.7,"body":"1717, his grandfather was able"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":127.47,"endTime":131.7,"body":"to gain his freedom. And then"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":131.7,"endTime":136.26,"body":"his father, Wentworth Cheswell's"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":131.7,"endTime":136.26,"body":"father was a carpenter, actually"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":136.26,"endTime":138.6,"body":"built the homes of several"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":136.26,"endTime":138.6,"body":"founding fathers. So Wentworth"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":138.63,"endTime":141.33,"body":"Cheswell grew up around, the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":138.63,"endTime":141.33,"body":"founding fathers, knew them, he"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":141.33,"endTime":145.05,"body":"goes off, get a good education"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":141.33,"endTime":145.05,"body":"and some high academics. And"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":145.05,"endTime":148.41,"body":"we've noted that at that time,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":145.05,"endTime":148.41,"body":"education looked a lot"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":148.41,"endTime":151.62,"body":"different, and so oftentimes,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":148.41,"endTime":151.62,"body":"just your basic education, you"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":151.62,"endTime":154.65,"body":"were learning multiple"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":151.62,"endTime":154.65,"body":"languages, which included Latin"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":154.65,"endTime":158.37,"body":"and Greek and often Hebrew and"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":154.65,"endTime":158.37,"body":"things along the way. So he goes"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":158.37,"endTime":162.33,"body":"and gains an education, he comes"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":158.37,"endTime":162.33,"body":"back and when he's 21 years old"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":162.45,"endTime":168.21,"body":"he is a school teacher, and he's"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":162.45,"endTime":168.21,"body":"a property owner, he's a leader"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":168.21,"endTime":171.27,"body":"in the church, he actually buys"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":168.21,"endTime":171.27,"body":"a pew because back then that's"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":171.27,"endTime":173.49,"body":"what you would do. It's how you"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":171.27,"endTime":173.49,"body":"contribute to the church. He"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":173.49,"endTime":176.31,"body":"bought a pew. He ends up getting"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":173.49,"endTime":176.31,"body":"married, and he and his wife,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":176.31,"endTime":180.63,"body":"Mary Davis had 13 Children,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":176.31,"endTime":180.63,"body":"which is an awful lot of"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":180.63,"endTime":183.63,"body":"children, four sons, nine"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":180.63,"endTime":183.63,"body":"daughters, and the following"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":183.63,"endTime":187.23,"body":"year is when he was elected town"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":183.63,"endTime":187.23,"body":"constable. Now, this is also"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":187.26,"endTime":189.72,"body":"kind of a big deal, because,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":187.26,"endTime":189.72,"body":"Dad, one of the things you've"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":189.72,"endTime":193.32,"body":"pointed out, is when you look at"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":189.72,"endTime":193.32,"body":"his life, he was living in a"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":193.32,"endTime":197.43,"body":"white community. But he didn't"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":193.32,"endTime":197.43,"body":"just get elected as a constable."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":197.61,"endTime":200.79,"body":"He was elected to a government"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":197.61,"endTime":200.79,"body":"position elected as a black man"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":200.79,"endTime":204.69,"body":"in this white community. But he"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":200.79,"endTime":204.69,"body":"was elected for nearly 50 years"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":204.69,"endTime":206.58,"body":"in a row serving in this"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":204.69,"endTime":206.58,"body":"community."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":207.26,"endTime":209.84,"body":"Yeah, he had eight"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":207.26,"endTime":209.84,"body":"different positions he held in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":209.84,"endTime":213.77,"body":"the community. 49 years of"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":209.84,"endTime":213.77,"body":"elected service, as you said,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":213.77,"endTime":217.1,"body":"nearly 50. And he's a black man"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":213.77,"endTime":217.1,"body":"in a white community. He is"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":217.1,"endTime":220.64,"body":"literally one of the town"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":217.1,"endTime":220.64,"body":"fathers. He was actually in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":220.64,"endTime":223.73,"body":"charge of town meetings, they"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":220.64,"endTime":223.73,"body":"elected him to be the guy to run"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":223.73,"endTime":226.85,"body":"the town, run the town meetings."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":223.73,"endTime":226.85,"body":"So it's just amazing the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":226.85,"endTime":229.94,"body":"positions he held throughout"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":226.85,"endTime":229.94,"body":"time. And you think, wow, that's"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":229.94,"endTime":232.76,"body":"got to be one of the really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":229.94,"endTime":232.76,"body":"early black elected leaders and,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":233.12,"endTime":237.5,"body":"yeah, kinda, but you've actually"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":233.12,"endTime":237.5,"body":"got to go back to 1641 to"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":237.5,"endTime":241.28,"body":"Matthias de Sousa, who's elected"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":237.5,"endTime":241.28,"body":"as a black man in a white state,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":241.28,"endTime":245.63,"body":"to the state legislature in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":241.28,"endTime":245.63,"body":"Maryland is 1641. So I mean,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":245.66,"endTime":248.27,"body":"people are not even aware of"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":245.66,"endTime":248.27,"body":"these early elections, but"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":248.27,"endTime":251.42,"body":"Wentworth Cheswell is a great"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":248.27,"endTime":251.42,"body":"example of a black elected"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":251.42,"endTime":253.55,"body":"official in a white community"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":251.42,"endTime":253.55,"body":"who served for a number of"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":253.55,"endTime":256.37,"body":"years, reelected, reelected,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":253.55,"endTime":256.37,"body":"reelected, reelected."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":256.03,"endTime":258.85,"body":"He also served in"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":256.03,"endTime":258.85,"body":"the American Revolution, at some"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":258.85,"endTime":261.19,"body":"noted places, some noted"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":258.85,"endTime":261.19,"body":"battles. At the end of the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":261.19,"endTime":264.94,"body":"revolution, he's also a kind of"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":261.19,"endTime":264.94,"body":"like a town historian. He was a soldier,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":290.05,"endTime":293.2,"body":"a teacher, historian and"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":290.05,"endTime":293.2,"body":"archaeologist and educator. He"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":293.2,"endTime":296.92,"body":"was a judge. He was elected"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":293.2,"endTime":296.92,"body":"numerous other offices, and he"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":296.92,"endTime":300.82,"body":"is one of America's earliest"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":296.92,"endTime":300.82,"body":"elected black officials. So this"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":300.82,"endTime":304.75,"body":"is a guy really worth note and"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":300.82,"endTime":304.75,"body":"acknowledgments. As we've"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":304.75,"endTime":307.54,"body":"mentioned on so many of these"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":304.75,"endTime":307.54,"body":"stories, there's just too few"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":307.54,"endTime":312.07,"body":"people that actually know some"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":307.54,"endTime":312.07,"body":"of these great heroes today. And it's"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":337.89,"endTime":341.52,"body":"just kind of fun to ask because"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":341.52,"endTime":345.81,"body":"CRT and 1619, they go after"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":341.52,"endTime":345.81,"body":"America is like the most racist"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":345.81,"endTime":348.12,"body":"nation in history the world."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":345.81,"endTime":348.12,"body":"You... okay now wait a minute"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":348.33,"endTime":351.42,"body":"Wentwroth Cheswell was elected"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":348.33,"endTime":351.42,"body":"1768 but Mathias de Sousa was"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":351.42,"endTime":355.62,"body":"elected 1641.
