So"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":168.91,"endTime":172.87,"body":"I went through stuff including"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":173.02,"endTime":177.19,"body":"back when JFK had the fitness"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":173.02,"endTime":177.19,"body":"program, and every kid in school"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":177.34,"endTime":181.39,"body":"was doing physical fitness in a"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":177.34,"endTime":181.39,"body":"serious, aggressive way. I mean,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":181.39,"endTime":184.51,"body":"we were a fit nation physically,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":181.39,"endTime":184.51,"body":"in a lot of ways. But it was"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":184.51,"endTime":188.05,"body":"always about training. And so"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":184.51,"endTime":188.05,"body":"you trained your body, and you"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":188.05,"endTime":191.32,"body":"trained your spirit. And I think"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":188.05,"endTime":191.32,"body":"that's what memorization really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":191.32,"endTime":194.62,"body":"does. The scripture says Thy"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":191.32,"endTime":194.62,"body":"word have I hid in my heart, how"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":194.62,"endTime":197.08,"body":"do you hide it in your heart if"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":194.62,"endTime":197.08,"body":"you don't memorize it? How do"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":197.08,"endTime":199.63,"body":"you know it's in there? How can"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":197.08,"endTime":199.63,"body":"you bring out what's not in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":199.63,"endTime":203.32,"body":"there? And so Jesus saw often as"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":199.63,"endTime":203.32,"body":"he would open his mouth, the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":203.32,"endTime":206.08,"body":"scripture would flow out of it."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":203.32,"endTime":206.08,"body":"You can count how many times in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":206.08,"endTime":208.9,"body":"the New Testament, he's just"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":206.08,"endTime":208.9,"body":"quoting from the prophets, and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":209.02,"endTime":212.17,"body":"especially in the book of"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":209.02,"endTime":212.17,"body":"Matthew. He says, but didn't the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":212.17,"endTime":215.86,"body":"Prophets say, and don't you read"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":212.17,"endTime":215.86,"body":"an Isaiah? And he would go, how"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":215.86,"endTime":218.65,"body":"did he do that? Because he had"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":215.86,"endTime":218.65,"body":"memorized the Scripture. So we"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":218.65,"endTime":221.59,"body":"really train the body, we really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":218.65,"endTime":221.59,"body":"train the spirit, but we also"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":221.59,"endTime":225.46,"body":"train the mind. And one of the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":221.59,"endTime":225.46,"body":"ways we train the mind was"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":225.46,"endTime":229.51,"body":"through memorization. We did a"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":225.46,"endTime":229.51,"body":"lot of memory work in schools,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":229.51,"endTime":232.6,"body":"we memorized a lot of stuff, we"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":229.51,"endTime":232.6,"body":"memorizec math tables, we"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":232.6,"endTime":235.66,"body":"memorizec scientific tables."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":232.6,"endTime":235.66,"body":"Remember back in science, we"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":235.66,"endTime":238.63,"body":"went through and memorized all"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":235.66,"endTime":238.63,"body":"the periodic tables and the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":238.63,"endTime":241.33,"body":"elements and all the things that"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":238.63,"endTime":241.33,"body":"were there and their various"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":241.33,"endTime":243.91,"body":"components and weights. Well, we"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":241.33,"endTime":243.91,"body":"can look that up on the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":243.91,"endTime":246.67,"body":"internet, now. So we don't need"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":243.91,"endTime":246.67,"body":"to memorize it. Well, you can."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":247.0,"endTime":250.54,"body":"But that's like being grossly"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":247.0,"endTime":250.54,"body":"overweight in your mind, you're"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":250.54,"endTime":253.06,"body":"not in good shape, which means"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":250.54,"endTime":253.06,"body":"you're not as fast, you're not"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":253.06,"endTime":256.15,"body":"sharp, you're not responsive."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":253.06,"endTime":256.15,"body":"And so we just don't train the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":256.15,"endTime":258.91,"body":"mind. And as you go back and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":256.15,"endTime":258.91,"body":"look in the founding era, some"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":258.91,"endTime":261.79,"body":"of the stuff we've collected a"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":258.91,"endTime":261.79,"body":"WallBuilders, and we use it very"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":261.79,"endTime":264.61,"body":"often. And particularly"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":273.88,"endTime":276.55,"body":"the pedagogy that was used. And"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":273.88,"endTime":276.55,"body":"pedagogy means a teaching"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":276.55,"endTime":279.46,"body":"method. And we keep changing"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":276.55,"endTime":279.46,"body":"teaching methods in America. And"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":279.46,"endTime":282.55,"body":"the more we do it, the more"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":279.46,"endTime":282.55,"body":"scores go down. We keep thinking"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":282.55,"endTime":285.67,"body":"we have a better idea, and it's"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":282.55,"endTime":285.67,"body":"not a better idea. And so you go"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":285.67,"endTime":288.46,"body":"back to the pedagogy and the one"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":285.67,"endTime":288.46,"body":"thing that was consistent in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":288.46,"endTime":292.18,"body":"American education for 300"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":288.46,"endTime":292.18,"body":"years, was serious memorization."},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":292.42,"endTime":296.32,"body":"And they call it a catechism. So"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":292.42,"endTime":296.32,"body":"we had memorization of questions"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":296.32,"endTime":299.71,"body":"and answers on math and on"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":296.32,"endTime":299.71,"body":"science and on history and on"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":299.71,"endTime":302.74,"body":"law and on music and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":299.71,"endTime":302.74,"body":"electricity, and every science"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":302.74,"endTime":305.17,"body":"you could think of. There were"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":302.74,"endTime":305.17,"body":"questions and answers you"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":305.17,"endTime":308.44,"body":"memorized on it. And that gave"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":305.17,"endTime":308.44,"body":"you a foundation, was always at"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":308.44,"endTime":312.07,"body":"your disposal always there ready"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":308.44,"endTime":312.07,"body":"for you to build on. And so the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":312.07,"endTime":315.67,"body":"aspect of training body and soul"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":312.07,"endTime":315.67,"body":"and spirit; body, mind and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":315.67,"endTime":320.35,"body":"spirit, we're just not really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":315.67,"endTime":320.35,"body":"doing much of that, today, in"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":320.35,"endTime":323.5,"body":"the way we should be doing, and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":320.35,"endTime":323.5,"body":"we're more advanced than we've"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":323.5,"endTime":327.76,"body":"ever been. But we have less"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":323.5,"endTime":327.76,"body":"cognitive ability, individually"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":327.76,"endTime":330.61,"body":"than we've had. We rely on"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":327.76,"endTime":330.61,"body":"computers and other things. Now"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":330.61,"endTime":332.95,"body":"we're getting into AI and"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":330.61,"endTime":332.95,"body":"Google's now fully into AI,"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":332.95,"endTime":336.4,"body":"fully committed to AI. So we're"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":332.95,"endTime":336.4,"body":"getting into things that think"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":336.4,"endTime":340.12,"body":"for us. And we're not needing to"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":336.4,"endTime":340.12,"body":"think. And that's where poetry"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":340.12,"endTime":343.96,"body":"is such a big deal, trying to"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":340.12,"endTime":343.96,"body":"memorize that and memorize the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":343.96,"endTime":346.72,"body":"rhetoric and the rhyme and the"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":343.96,"endTime":346.72,"body":"temper and everything that goes"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":346.72,"endTime":350.29,"body":"with it. That's a really, really"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":346.72,"endTime":350.29,"body":"big deal. And it worked"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":350.29,"endTime":354.1,"body":"successfully for centuries to"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":350.29,"endTime":354.1,"body":"train some of the brightest"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":354.1,"endTime":357.79,"body":"people we've ever had. And we"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":354.1,"endTime":357.79,"body":"can't abandon it just because we"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":357.79,"endTime":361.0,"body":"have AI and computers that can"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":357.79,"endTime":361.0,"body":"think for us, we have to train"},{"speaker":"David Barton","startTime":361.0,"endTime":362.92,"body":"our mind. What a"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1359.13,"endTime":1363.39,"body":"novel concept to challenge"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1363.39,"endTime":1366.99,"body":"students to use their brain to"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1363.39,"endTime":1366.99,"body":"actually be able to memorize."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1367.11,"endTime":1371.7,"body":"And as we're looking at culture"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1367.11,"endTime":1371.7,"body":"around us, it's even kind of"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1371.7,"endTime":1374.19,"body":"fascinating to think, what kind"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1371.7,"endTime":1374.19,"body":"of problems might we be able to"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1374.19,"endTime":1378.9,"body":"solve if we had a generation who"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1374.19,"endTime":1378.9,"body":"was being taught to use that"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1378.9,"endTime":1382.5,"body":"massive muscle in their head if"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1378.9,"endTime":1382.5,"body":"they could develop it and use"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1382.5,"endTime":1385.29,"body":"it. Man, what kind of problems"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1382.5,"endTime":1385.29,"body":"could this next generation"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1385.29,"endTime":1389.88,"body":"solve? And unfortunately, the"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1385.29,"endTime":1389.88,"body":"government funded public schools"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1389.88,"endTime":1392.97,"body":"have not done a good job of"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1389.88,"endTime":1392.97,"body":"challenging students to use"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1392.97,"endTime":1396.18,"body":"their brains in a lot of ways."},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1392.97,"endTime":1396.18,"body":"And maybe, I mean, honestly,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1396.18,"endTime":1398.58,"body":"even a lot of Christian schools,"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1396.18,"endTime":1398.58,"body":"a lot of homeschool is charter"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1398.58,"endTime":1401.97,"body":"schools, private schools, we've"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1398.58,"endTime":1401.97,"body":"embraced the same false"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1402.18,"endTime":1406.59,"body":"political ideology, the same bad"},{"speaker":"Tim Barton","startTime":1402.18,"endTime":1406.59,"body":"philosophy of education.
