Psalm 90 was the biblical text this past Sunday as Pastor Mike Gibbons dealt with God's eternality contrasted with the brevity of our own lives. Verse 10 reminds us that we might have 70 or 80 years in this life, which is nothing more than a blip in eternity. The older we get, we start to understand more and more the reality that James speaks of when he says our life is like a mist that appears for a short time and then vanishes. The Old King James Version calls it a vapor, and one translation of the scriptures even calls it a puff of smoke. But because I live in the Texas Hill Country, I can relate with the way that the New Living Translation puts it, that life is like the morning fog. It's here a little while, then it's gone. In fact, I live in a valley surrounded by hills. Sometimes the hills visible from the front parking lot of our church completely disappear in the morning fog. Yet we know how fleeting that fog is. You know what? Even though life is but a mist, many of us experience sleepless nights that can feel like an eternity. Will I ever go back to sleep? We exclaim, when the worries of this world play over and over in our minds at 2 30 in the morning. And as a minister, I might tell you to cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you. Or maybe just pray and meditate on Scripture until you fall back asleep. But I know it's little comfort to those who struggle with sleep. Old Testament expert and author Chad Byrd says to teach us to number our days, O Lord, as well as our nights, when our work is done, and when we retire for the evening, let us remember Psalm 139, verse 12. The darkness is not dark to you. The night is bright as the day. The darkness is as light with you. Lord, teach us to number our days as well as our nights, that we might rest in you. End quote. So it's my prayer that even when you can't sleep, you can at least rest in the promise that God is with you. I hope this helps. This has been Dan Stevens with your daily walk. Thanks for joining me and have a great day.
