Israel wanted a king—and God gave them Saul. But this wasn’t just about leadership… it was about the condition of their hearts.
In 1 Samuel 9, we see a powerful tension: God is still sovereign, even when His people ask for the wrong things. Saul didn’t look like a mistake—he looked like the perfect choice. Tall, impressive, exactly what the people wanted. But outward appearance isn’t the same as inward obedience.
God was working behind the scenes the whole time—guiding steps, arranging moments, and positioning Saul for a purpose. Yet woven into the blessing was a warning: just because God allows something doesn’t mean it’s His best for us.
How often do we do the same? We ask God for what looks right… what feels right… what makes sense in the moment. And sometimes, in His mercy, He allows it—not to harm us, but to teach us to trust Him more deeply.
