SPEAKER_01And welcome to another episode of Strangers in the Alps, a movie podcast, where every week we talk about movies in a really cool, fun, extravagant, and sometimes intelligent ramble. My name is Dan. My name is Frank.
SPEAKER_04And my name is Travis.
SPEAKER_01That's the perfect one. And here we are, together again. Together again. Travis. Hey Travis with the witty soundboard. Travis, can you please um I know you have nowhere near.
SPEAKER_06Well, hold on.
SPEAKER_04We try to keep it to a movie per episode, but we do end up just talking about a bunch of movies.
SPEAKER_06And amongst other things.
SPEAKER_04Amongst other things.
SPEAKER_01Amongst other things here too, okay. Um Yes, we are in season, I don't know. Four. Season four. And welcome to season four.
SPEAKER_03We can we can sh make it.
SPEAKER_01Okay, Travis, let me explain something to you. If you don't put the sound effect up against the microphone, nobody can frickin' hear it, okay? There you go.
SPEAKER_06That's right. Editing wise, it would be funny if like he does that and then you cut and then we start all over again.
SPEAKER_01For a guy who actually studied all this in college, I didn't do audio remarkably what you're doing.
SPEAKER_04I didn't do audio. Dun dun dun lots of people see how she did that? Lots of lots of people go to college for seven years.
SPEAKER_01Six years of college down the drain.
SPEAKER_04Six years of hey, was it over when they bombed Pearl Harbor?
SPEAKER_01Pearl Harbor. Forget it, he's rolling.
SPEAKER_04Okay. I don't like that.
SPEAKER_01Season four. Here we go. Season quattro. And now we're gonna turn out the witty sound effects. We don't want to lose the audience.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. You're gonna give it. Give me it. We don't want to lose the audience at the beginning of season four. They've already stuck along for three seasons of this.
SPEAKER_01I will be honest with you. I did not know this was the beginning of season four.
SPEAKER_04Frank told us like ten minutes ago.
SPEAKER_03So Alright, cool. Yeah. I think I also told you guys by email and in person. You didn't get the same.
SPEAKER_04And you didn't get the should we start again?
SPEAKER_06No, this is great. This is season four. It's on par.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Travis, are you ready to read the back of the VHS tape that we all that it was on VHS tape?
SPEAKER_06It was, yeah. Alright, while he looks it up, let's explain season four.
SPEAKER_01Okay, go, Sam. I don't know what we're doing. So season four.
SPEAKER_06It's season four. We're taking it. We're just doing movies.
SPEAKER_03We're taking it up. A notch. Actually, no, we're taking it a notch. I don't know if we're ramping down. Well we're ramping it, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03We're free falling. We're we're gonna focus on movies. Movies. We we have a month lead-in. Unlike the other three seasons. Yeah, where we focused less on movies, but more on movies somehow.
SPEAKER_06And also, like, you know how the past three seasons we have a list? We don't. We don't. We're making it up as we go along.
SPEAKER_04It's the winging season.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I have something I'd like to confess. And since this is episode one of season four, this is what I'm gonna confess. Okay. I did not make one note about this movie. Not one. We are because he lived it. I didn't write down one thing. And it's season four.
SPEAKER_06You suck at this. Yeah, I lived the wrong one.
SPEAKER_01That's fine. That's why he was the tank at the beginning. Or he was the tank at the beginning.
SPEAKER_04Betamax, sir. There's actually a good one. A British soldier kidnapped by the IRA soon befriends one of his captors, who then becomes drawn into the soldier's world.
SPEAKER_06Woo, whoa, woo.
SPEAKER_04Dun dun dun. Wait, why didn't uh do what?
SPEAKER_01Read the number? Yeah, no, the the Can I I'll just Travis?
SPEAKER_04Sam's gonna tell us what sounds the name of the movie. Oh shit, okay. It's called And there's no Crying Game. The Crying Game.
SPEAKER_03Directed by Neil Jordan.
SPEAKER_06Why didn't you write any notes down?
SPEAKER_03Phil Jordan. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06How many times have you seen it? Let's just go into some initial thoughts now. Second. You want to start out?
SPEAKER_01Let's do initial thoughts. I will start. So this movie came out in 1992.
SPEAKER_06Oh, it's two years old.
SPEAKER_01I did not see this movie in the theater. In 1992, I had a two-year-old son named Nathan, and I had a newborn infant named Molly. You had them? What happened to them? I don't know. A newborn infant? As in as in an We didn't really go to the movie theaters, but we did get screeners. And for those of you who don't know what screeners are, the Academy gives those out to the members uh every year to watch them and then you know to help them disappear. So someone shared one with you? How to vote. That's well, I didn't know anything about I didn't know what it was about. They kept that really, really under wraps. Even after the movie opened was running, they they did a really huge push to keep it a secret. They did not want people talking about what it was about for obvious reasons. Um when Joni and I watched it, I I called my best friend at that time and said, Hey, I have a screen of the crying game. He said, Oh, do you know what it's about? I said, I have no idea. That's perfect. Just watch the movie. So that's my pre-thought. Um, I saw it. We watched it together, and um I believe I'm the one who suggested that we watch this movie.
SPEAKER_04You were because we watched interview, because it's the same director as interview with a vampire, right?
SPEAKER_01So Neil Jordan. Yeah. So anyway, that was my pre-thought. Um, I don't want to go any deeper into it because we'll talk about the movie in a minute.
SPEAKER_06Really quick, was interview our last season three or was it actually season four?
SPEAKER_03It was it was our last season three.
SPEAKER_06Well, throwback. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04If you haven't, you should go into our finale. It's a great finale on Interview with a Vampire.
SPEAKER_06Vampire Chronicles. The final interview. Do you want to keep it with how we intro it? We'll reverse it.
SPEAKER_03Sure, Frank, what was your pre-thought of it? God damn it.
SPEAKER_04Um I was gonna say we'll reverse it. I'll go.
SPEAKER_03Um, I had heard about the movie, and I think I bought it, and then I never saw it. I never watched it. Blind bot? Yes. Literally, it was at the same time that I bought um uh what was I guess two. Yeah. Um, um, the Boondock Saints. Oh, that's it was in that it was in that phase of buying movies that I'd like to do. You mentioned was it in like a double pass in the same bin? No, yeah, it was not. I mean, it would have made sense now that I think about it.
SPEAKER_06I've never seen Boondocks. It don't. It's not good.
SPEAKER_03Oh. It's entertaining, but it's not good. Yeah. But it's good. You know what? It's that kind of like bro y, I'm in the indie film good.
SPEAKER_04It's then when you rewatch it, you're like, it's okay.
SPEAKER_03Kind of like the crowd. No. Not at all.
SPEAKER_04Not at all. No, this one's too broken. Take that gong away. This one's just a little it's Yeah, moving to YouTube. No, it's no, hold on. I got a perfect one, hold on. Sam, you would actually hate it, I think. Boondog? Yeah, I don't I don't think you would like it. You would hate it. Okay, then I'm not gonna watch it.
SPEAKER_03Good performance by um, what's what's his name? Well, that's what made him big. Willem Defoe.
SPEAKER_04Oh, but I love me some win. It was also the guy the guy from The Walking Dead. It was also the guy from The Walking Dead. The main guy? Reedus, Norman Reedus. Norman Reedus. Yeah, yeah, you get really over the top, really, really over the top um Willem Defoe. I don't know if you've seen the clip where it's him. It's like the lighthouse.
SPEAKER_06There was a firefight! So like the lighthouse part one. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, staying on course here.
SPEAKER_03So Frank's your pre-thought. I was. I knew about the twist, but I hadn't seen it. Actually, before watching it, I don't know why I thought it was like a heist movie.
SPEAKER_04The ending is a little bit.
SPEAKER_03It's a little heisty, but not really. But it it was the uh it it looked like like it could have been, and from what I had heard about it, it sounded like it could have been. I don't know. I don't know where I got that notion. But anyway, when I put it on, I saw the movie and I was like, no, it was not a heist film. Not a heist film.
SPEAKER_04It is not and you And is in when you just saw it now for the first time or before? Yeah, now for the first time.
SPEAKER_03I'm pretty sure I'd seen a scene or two from it before.
SPEAKER_04So this was your first time?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, this was my first time.
SPEAKER_04How about you, Sam? Never seen it. Have you heard of it? Nope. You wanna you know what? That's a Dan pre-thought. You wanna know something? Because they told me to. You want to know something? Sam just said my uh prethot. You'd never heard of it? Nope. Oh wow, when you were saying when you were saying Crying Game, I was like, so if we had never done interviewing a song, probably would have never seen it.
SPEAKER_01No, we would have never done this movie. Nicki Minach. Well, that's interesting.
SPEAKER_06Where do we go from here?
SPEAKER_01Now we can just start talking about the movie, I think.
SPEAKER_04I know we kind of strayed from doing this, but here's just a thought. I think maybe for this one, because there is kind of a lot of things. I think we need to tell the plot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the plot and I think we should kind of Was it little? No, it was not.
SPEAKER_04And I think we should then go over each kind of act a little bit and talk about it. I agree.
SPEAKER_03So how about you start?
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah. So no, Dan, you Dan, give a rough Dan, give a rough um s summary, brief summary of what it's about.
SPEAKER_01There's the uh Irish um what are they the Irish The IRA, thank you. So the IRA kidnaps a British soldier from a at a carnival. Forrest Whitaker. Um Forrest Whitaker, who I honest totally forgot was in the movie.
SPEAKER_04His voice threw me off so much.
SPEAKER_01Right, because you didn't know that he was actually English. Right?
SPEAKER_06Well, before this podcast started, Frank and I shared a common opinion. It took us a while to realize he wasn't Irish and that his accent was actually British.
SPEAKER_03Actually, I I will go a step further. I was watching it at night, so I couldn't have the volume up all the way. So you don't know what he was talking about. I was watching what he was saying. I heard enough to hear some of the words, and then I put subtitles on. And like 20 minutes in, uh, I I'm like, fuck it, I'll just I'll put the volume up. So I put the volume up, and the first thing that that crosses my mind is wait, Forrest Whitaker's supposed to be British. I thought he was like playing an American or something. Oh, I thought he was Irish. Did you know that he was British? No.
SPEAKER_06No, I was like, why are they attacking their own per people? And I was like, oh, he's British. So he's part of the other side.
SPEAKER_01So he's he's kidnapped, and they and they use him as bait to get what they want in return, and they give the the English three days three days, and um I don't know the care uh what's his name's c name? Um Stephen Ray. Stephen Stephen Ray?
SPEAKER_03It's uh Fergus. Fergus, thank you.
SPEAKER_01So he's sort of becomes the guy watching him in this shed. And through this three-day period, they kind of develop a relationship in that they kind of break the walls down and they love it. They wanted to break some walls. Okay, okay. They they they kind of break the walls down and sort of become they Fergus basically breaks every rule and it becomes kind of a personal thing. He shows them when you break every name.
SPEAKER_04He shows he takes it blindly.
SPEAKER_01So finally they say, Okay, you're the one that's gonna have to kill him because they're not gonna come to our terms, so we're gonna kill him, and you have to do it. So very quickly they get to that point, he walks him outside, uh, he can't, he doesn't do it. Um what's his name? Good God, what is happening? Forced Whitaker? Forced Whitaker, thank you. He says starts running, he chases him, he runs into the street, he gets boom, he gets hit by a tank army tank, ran over, killed, and immediately their whole encampment starts getting riddled with bullets by the English army that shows up. And Stephen Ray gets away. We don't know about everybody. It looks like everybody's getting wiped out. Yeah. So Stephen Ray goes to England and Oh, because during their relationship, he shows him a picture of her his girlfriend, and Stephen Ray feels compelled to go back, find her, because take her to the metro.
SPEAKER_06Jody told him to take care of her.
SPEAKER_01Take care of her. So he does. So that's kind of that launches into I guess the second act. I think that's really the the second act. Can I be honest?
SPEAKER_03I didn't think it was gonna go past the bar. When it first started and they were doing that, I was like, oh, is this gonna be one of those like we're in the bar now?
SPEAKER_04Yes, that's what I was gonna say, Frank, because so I when I didn't know anything. So when the movie started, I'm like, okay, like they're lovers, what's going on? And then because she's very much like like he were lovers. No, no, no, no, no. Not lovers. I'm sorry. They're when Forrest Brick had in the girl, you don't know because they're just together. They're at the car. At the car, yeah, they're at the car, and then and then it's a rich. And then it's very much like she he wants to kiss her, or she went, and he keeps saying, Oh, like or she keeps saying they wanted a fuck. Yeah, and it's like, oh, we can't do it. We can't do it here. We don't, you know, I don't want to.
SPEAKER_01Right, because you had to go to the bridge so they could capture him.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So then they get captured, and that's what I thought the whole movie. I was like, okay, I thought the whole movie was getting me in the barn, and they're like, okay, you got three days. Then within two minutes, I'm like, okay, they're talking, they're friends, and they're like, you got one day. I'm like, wait a second. I have to check the time, and I'm like, oh, it's only been 20 minutes. It didn't, I didn't feel like it was dragging on. But for me, I'm just like, what's the rest of this movie? I thought they were gonna run off and then be pursued by the whole army.
SPEAKER_01So he goes to England and he meets the girl, he develops a relationship with I'm gonna go really broad stroke here. He he meets the girl, uh, they have a they begin a relationship. Uh Miranda Richardson and the other IRA guy, they show back up, they drag him back into a plot to kill a politician. There's a whole thing where he's trying to take care of the girl, and it gets all very messy and very action and thriller-ish. Uh, and we don't really have to tell the rest of it. I mean, he we'll get into the details, obviously, of the movie. But um, he ends up uh taking the rap for killing Miranda Richardson, which he doesn't do, his actual girlfriend does it, and he ends up in prison, and she comes and visits him at the end, and it kind of rolls from there. But there's a lot of other things I'm skipping over, obviously. Some major points. But that's the basic plot, right? We can all agree that now let's get into the whole storyline.
SPEAKER_06I would like to say I don't I feel like the bond between Jody and Fergus, it felt fake.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_06It felt like it was too quick of a bond.
SPEAKER_04Or I almost thought at first So I wasn't attached to it. I almost felt like at first that Joni was using Jody. Jody, sorry. That Jody was using Fergus. I thought that's what it was.
SPEAKER_03I thought they could have played into that.
SPEAKER_04I thought it I thought it was him like, oh, he's just trying to like feel him out of the friends so you can like attack them or get away. So at first, because I was like, because at first I was like, okay, cool, well I felt I was okay with it because I feel like he didn't know what he was doing.
SPEAKER_01But I feel like he had no idea what he was doing. He was just kind of doing his thing. I gotta take care of this.
SPEAKER_04Somehow, I think they explained, like, I think he was a volunteer that I think he just gets dragged into it and he just can't say no.
SPEAKER_06I don't know if he did something or I had a I read Wikipedia, he was just a volunteer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Oh, okay, because they were like, oh, you okay.
SPEAKER_06I thought when he was explaining the Scorpion and the Frog story, I was like, where are you going with this? And I did like the callback.
SPEAKER_01That's actually an old fable. That's really yeah, that's a real story. Super old.
SPEAKER_06I mean, like you were there?
SPEAKER_01I was there. I mean, I was told that story when I was a kid. And the whole idea is, well, I'm a you know, I'm a scorpion, that's what I do. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I use people.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03All the way back to Pangea.
SPEAKER_05I I agree though.
SPEAKER_01I I agree with that. I didn't really Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um but no, I I'm curious because I'm sorry, uh Travis, I'm curious because I'd already seen the movie. I don't remember what I was thinking the first time I saw the movie. So this time watching it, knowing that I knew where it was going, I found that whole first section really interesting. Yeah. Because I already knew where we were going. Initially, it's a pound. No, and I'm just watching this, like Travis was saying, well, is this what the movie's about?
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Did you like it initially? When you first do you remember if you liked it? See, I don't remember.
SPEAKER_01Because the only thing you remember from that movie 20 years later, and we all know what that moment is. That's the moment we all go, oh, whoa.
SPEAKER_04Because Forrest Whitaker, he kind of like hints.
SPEAKER_01I forgot Forrest Whitaker was in the movie.
SPEAKER_04He hints a lot of it like super early too, when he was saying about the girl he was like, oh yeah, like she's not your type of woman. Yeah. She's that she's like, oh, like she's far, like not even Yeah. But no, I There were hints. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01I there were hints. I agree with you about their relationship with the first act, but I think also in watching it, I think it's a little bit like that's not what you're where you're expecting it to go. Yeah. So when it does go in that direction, I think you're like, oh, okay. Well that's that's not what I was expecting. Fascinating. That these two are actually gonna kind of bond on enough of a level where it's personal.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well you're no longer just a prisoner. I'm actually I'm actually you're I'm humanizing you, which is gonna make it impossible for me to kill you.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then I that was the whole, I think, purpose of that whole thing. Right. No, that was yeah, that was a hundred percent.
SPEAKER_06And the idea of like knowing that you were gonna die, that was scary. Like, even I was like, ooh.
SPEAKER_04And that's what I think it kind of was like, and that's why I thought Jody was using Fergus. Because he's like, hey, like, for him, I thought he was kind of like, oh, he kind of like I don't want to say like accepted his fate. I think you're right. But he was very much like the only way I'm gonna get out of here is through like this guy. Befriending, yeah, yeah. Because if we become like you care about it, I thought, yeah, because I thought he's like, okay, I saw weakness, like obviously this guy kind of cares about me.
SPEAKER_01And that kind of plays through Fergus's whole character through the entire movie. Same thing happens when he comes to London.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm. So then but in the first act, would Jody be considered Scorpion? No, because I think Jody was just I think. If you're going through the aspect of like, oh maybe he's using Fergus to make sure.
SPEAKER_04That's what I maybe thought, but then at the end, like you because you can totally tell too in certain moments, like I think like I to me it felt more real when like Jody does really think he's gonna die, and it's like, oh, like he kind of gets upset and starts like crying and stuff. To me, I'm just like I to me, I think that's when it hit me. I'm like, oh no, I don't think he was like using him using him.
SPEAKER_06I never thought that I always thought it was like genuine between the two.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I think the the implication is that they want you to think he's going to. But ultimately it's more of an abstract, like things do what they do, even if it's not in their best interest. Which is in the nature. Right, which is the whole scorpion thing. Yeah. Like I we both died. I mean, it's best because I'm a scorpion. It's clearly a setup for the end, but it does have a dual purpose in making you think it's gonna go a different way.
SPEAKER_04Going ahead a little bit, but not always. So because you said it kind of comes back later. What do you think? So throughout the movie, um he Fergus keeps getting flashbacks of Forrest Whitaker running towards him in that croquette.
SPEAKER_01Was it croquette or I don't know what that meant and I didn't really care for it.
SPEAKER_06It gave me like, oh, he actually feelings for Jody.
SPEAKER_01It always took me out of the movie when I would see that.
SPEAKER_03I think you're right though, because like there's those moments later when he cuts her hair. And put him in that outfit and puts her in the outfit. I think there's a good point. There's a then they also have that moment where they like the their bonding does start off a little fast, but there's enough there to make me think it's believable. It's just the uh they just I don't know if if the days that they had was enough. Right. What was what's the tell you on it? Dill.
SPEAKER_06Dill D I L.
SPEAKER_01I found out short for Dill Pickle. You know what I mean. I found her absolutely so m mesmerizing. Same. I mean, I could not and I couldn't un I couldn't figure out. Yeah. And having already seen the movie and watching it a second time, I found it even more mesmerizing. Oh my God, you are so fucking I don't know what your thing is, but I am so drawn into it. It was the thing, yeah.
SPEAKER_06As the story progressed, she got more mesmerizing for me, even when she was like shooting down. I agree.
SPEAKER_03You know what I think it is, is um the first like couple of lines that she has caught me off guard because I'm like, there it there's something like weird about, but as it kept going, it was kind of like she was in her own like world. Yeah, and everyone was just tender.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I thought I was Jim Broadbent. And he was in Who is that?
SPEAKER_04Um He was in Hot Fuzz.
SPEAKER_01No, yes, he was Yes, but that's not a big movie. He's been in a stuff. He was in Harry Potter too. What's the musical? Oh, um Moulin Rouge. He was in Mulan Rouge. He played the guy who ran the place. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04That's I that's how I got the movie kind of That's how I got it spoiled for me a little bit, is because we were I was watching the movie and it showed the bartender. I'm like, I know this actor, but I know him maybe like 20 years in the future because he looks too young. Right, right, right. So I looked up the movie and I saw Dill and I was like, oh, okay. Because it showed it had the actor.
SPEAKER_01What the hell did you do that for while you're watching the movie?
SPEAKER_04I I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Okay. But that's gonna change.
SPEAKER_04But I will say though. Okay, sorry. Go ahead, no, no, go ahead. The actor, do you know the actor's only been in two movies? No. Oh Dillon. This one and her picture's not on IMDb. Really?
SPEAKER_01Cool. Yeah. So I found Dill really, yeah, like we were just saying, just a really like I was so drawn into that character.
SPEAKER_05The bar scene.
SPEAKER_01Like my favorite. Super drawn in.
SPEAKER_05Both bar scenes I love.
SPEAKER_03I agree. I also loved when when uh she showed up to his job after the whole thing.
SPEAKER_01Well, I was gonna say the construction job. That whole construction scene was a good one.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, she owned that scene so much when she like was just walking up with the lunchbox, walking in with the lunch, came up the elevator. Yeah, no.
SPEAKER_06I think I wrote down in my notes she had game.
SPEAKER_04She has a hundred percent. The line like ask me out. She was, I think every scene that she was in, I think she like was in charge of like every scene. Like she had the power in like every I I agree.
SPEAKER_01I think she just makes this movie such a Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03She also has the best moment, I think, is that when uh Miranda Richardson's character walks in with a gun and she's like, honey, you didn't knock. And then shoots her.
SPEAKER_06Can I say that was so good when Jude reappeared?
unknownMm-hmm.
SPEAKER_06Wig Cunty.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. That that was a lot that was something that I that that I I forgot to write it, but I was like, every single, every single moment that um both Jude, like post and um Dill are in, Cunty, Cunty, Cunty, Continue.
SPEAKER_06A whole scene, Cunty.
SPEAKER_04We're talking about the character, so we're good. You're right. Also, this is what Dill looks like now.
SPEAKER_06What? Yeah, glasses on for this.
SPEAKER_01Oh, could you put that on camera there? Yeah. Record scratch.
SPEAKER_03I'll I'll um I'll probably put like I guess um he said he didn't like the fame that came with um doing the two films. Oh, yeah. Like he wasn't even gonna do Stargate. Um he asked for a million and thought that they would say no, and they said yes, and he's like, okay.
SPEAKER_06He's like, oh shit, okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and then after that he's like, I don't really like this, so and you can you can like it takes a lot to be like, you know, fame's not for me. Yeah. It takes a lot to get a million dollars, right? And then be like, it's not for me. I can live. Yeah, I'll walk away from that, right?
SPEAKER_01So let's let's let's just jump in. To the reveal. Um, obviously Travis is a man based. Travis read something in the middle of the movie.
SPEAKER_06Can I ask you first when you watched it the first time, if you remember, did you have any ideas that she was none copy?
SPEAKER_01Okay. I was a hundred percent right. Oh my god. I mean that literally was what the audience wanted. I went, what? Penis. It like blew my mind. And honestly, it takes the movie to such another level that you think, oh, is this still gonna work? It works even better after that moment. It accelerates it to such an incredible to me. Yeah, and their relationship accelerates I mean, when he's like, kiss me, tell me like I love you. Yeah. I mean, it was so great. Yeah. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_04Well, because I think like, you know, especially there was a lot of it in the 90s. I'm gonna say like in films with kind of like, you know, obviously when it's revealed, and like in some movies uses as a joke. Some movies it's like, oh, this character's like this, and they tie like mental illness into all of it. But I kind of liked how in this movie I thought it was more respectable, so it was like it was there, but to me it wasn't like, oh, it's revealed, and then you find out the character's crazy, and then they turn into a villain. Right, or this wasn't exploited, or it's a joke, it's not exploited.
SPEAKER_01I keep referring to she. I like how she said, How did you not know? Yeah, where did you not know what was going on?
SPEAKER_04So like great about that.
SPEAKER_01She was so genuinely really hurt by what he was doing.
SPEAKER_06I mean, he threw up.
SPEAKER_01I was just so like moved.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But there was also this moment that this, like, sorry, not to interrupt, but there was uh there was the like the sad undertone of her kind of being like, okay, I'll take it because you know there's that implication that it's it's she has to accept these things because of who she is. It's a normal thing. She has to be like, okay, just not the face. Yeah, yeah. You know, it's kind of it's kind of sad in a in a telling ways.
SPEAKER_04And then Dan, and then when he goes back in the bar, the next time it looks different and it's very obvious. Yes. What kind of bar he's in. Very drag bar. Very obvious. No, I thought Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I when I was watching it the other night for my second time, but we're talking like in 33 years, I even though I was like going, yeah, this is a drag bar. Like I would I didn't know that the first time I was watching. I wasn't thinking about that. Just like they didn't want me to be thinking about that. Yeah. I think generally speaking, I think that review was shocking to the audience back then. I don't think most people knew.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, no, I I read that they asked reviewers specifically to not mention it to keep it as a surprise for the audience, which is great. You could not do that today because people suck.
SPEAKER_06And I feel like they wouldn't let you know.
SPEAKER_03Like six cents would never work. Yeah. Social media would destroy that movie. When I was on vacation the first week, the uh season series finale for the boys dropped. There was uh screenshots of it within like 10 to 15 minutes on on my like on my stories from people that I know, and I was like That's why you posted don't let me know. That's why I posted, hey, can you guys not post fucking spoilers? Not everyone's caught up.
SPEAKER_06Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03So it's like, yeah, there's no way you could get away with it now because people have no idea.
SPEAKER_06I mean, having to continuously be like, hey, this is embargoed, don't do it. People still break embargoes. Oh, for sure. Yeah, it happens. Not me though.
SPEAKER_03No. Never. You've never told us anything about anything. Ever.
SPEAKER_04Um. But no, I like I said I would I think the film could have just easily, I think, turned from me on that point on.
SPEAKER_06The bar? Or the reveal.
SPEAKER_04But I was kind of like, okay, like, no, I liked for the most part, like, the way it was handled and how it's gonna be.
SPEAKER_01I think the movie gets better from that point on. I think the third act is great.
SPEAKER_06I genuinely feel like sometimes you don't even need the whole, oh, dude and whoever pulling him back in.
SPEAKER_03No, you could you could have honestly you could have had the movie just be them, and it would have still been a really good movie.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I agree. I think it would have been better without the whole.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I don't have any opinions on it yet.
SPEAKER_01It's set up.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so he's being chased by his demons. Right. I mean, it is set up that he's doing. I mean, and there's not homosexuality. I was okay with them coming back and dragging him in.
SPEAKER_06I'm gonna ask a Dan question. Right. You know how you always ask, did I miss something? Why did he cut her hair?
SPEAKER_01He wanted to turn her back into a boy. He was trying to protect her identity. That's what I think, but I wanted to make sure. So she wouldn't be uh uh recognized by the people that were. Yeah, that's what I that's what I was thinking. Okay. I mean that's the only thing I can come up with.
SPEAKER_04That's right. Yeah, I think it's because they might because she had he because he had gone, she had gone to his work, she had seen yeah, it was just a protect.
SPEAKER_01Right. Remember she showed up at the restaurant, uh Jude did not Jude, yeah, showed up at the restaurant. Right. So I think he was trying to put her back her back into being a boy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I love that she didn't let Jude like talk down to her during that scene. No, she gave it as good as uh Jude thought that she was giving it.
SPEAKER_06Did you think um Fergus telling her about Judy was too or Jody too late? Should have been told her earlier. No. I feel like it should have been a little bit earlier.
SPEAKER_04I think I think it was the right time. Do you think it should have been uh Fergus saw like in the bar? Like the first time they made it.
SPEAKER_06No, it was a little bit earlier. I didn't I didn't like it where it was.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you mean like where it was placed in the movie? Yeah. I yeah, I guess. I mean I understand why it was there for dramatic purposes. Um they could have done it before. I think it was fine though, personally.
SPEAKER_04Whatever.
SPEAKER_03I love it. Dun dun dun.
SPEAKER_04Where would you have placed it, Sam? I don't fucking know. No, like just guess I'm not saying definitely at the beginning. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It just felt to me like it should have been a little earlier.
SPEAKER_06Because I at some point I'm like, oh shit, wait, no. She still doesn't know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. But I think it's very much Sam where you were telling me, like, Travis, get to the point. Yeah. Tell me or yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you know what? They probably could have done it after he found out about Dale. Yeah. Because then you could have had that be like the big, like, oh.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, or when Jody comes back, it's like, hey, because I know they're looking for you, or they're gonna like threatening to kill you.
SPEAKER_03But it worked out okay. It's fine.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it didn't work out well for Jude, but yeah.
SPEAKER_06No.
SPEAKER_01I r I really I mean, I think did we already talk about the fact that yeah, we talked about Dill killing. Dill's pickle, yes. I really loved the last scene in the prison. Oh, that has been. Oh, yeah. No, I'm not just the ending was great.
SPEAKER_04I rewrote the last one in. I rewind that scene like three times. Really? Yeah. You what? I rewound the scene.
SPEAKER_01It's so it's so well done.
SPEAKER_06I should the camera works.
SPEAKER_01And then Stand By Your Man is the song. It's just so it's such a great ending.
SPEAKER_06They use a lot of like Dutch angles or some sort of like thing, but I think there was a scene between him and First Whitaker where like it just panned. Yeah. And that was really cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's a it's um Or like when she was behind the curtain in her room.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah. Loved her with a gun. You know what? That that reminds me of um uh when they were first no, not first. When when after he had cut her hair and and brought her back to the apartment and like they were making out, and he's like, no, with the lights off. Like that apartment was like really well lit. So lit. But it was it was movie lights off. Yeah, yeah. It just it took me a second, I was like, wait, it's supposed to be nighttime?
SPEAKER_01Oh that's a good point.
SPEAKER_06If if it was made today, do you guys think it would have gone further? Like I feel like with this one, because it it almost tabooed to like, you know, with the whole like um trans people stuff. I feel like if it was made today, I feel like they would have gone further or dove further into like the subject.
SPEAKER_01Um I don't know what the woke influence would be on this movie today. So I think you're right. I think it would definitely be different. Um I don't know it would be better. Uh I think it depends on the filmmaker too. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Which I was thinking Nicholas Wingding Refin.
SPEAKER_01I don't know who that is, but he did drive.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and then I feel like he would have been good in that one.
SPEAKER_03I can see that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, I think the bigger issue though is if you made it well, first of all, you can't remake it because then we all know what's going on.
SPEAKER_04But if you made this remake, we made a lot of movies where we know what's going on.
SPEAKER_01If you make the movie today, like you were saying, the the big reveal, everybody would know before they even saw the movie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but I think it will still drive people. But I think even knowing the reveal, I I don't think I I mean I think like like I said, like you like the rest of the movie and it's good. I think that's okay, like knowing because I don't think that's like I think the big like focal point of the movie.
SPEAKER_01No, I agree, but it ends up being about the relationship. Yeah, it ends up being about the relationship, but it's like you know, it is a pretty it is a pretty gigantic twist though.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And the it it did remind me of a movie, um not exactly the same, but I just had to look it up right now. That I uh we saw well, I saw a couple years ago called Femme. I don't know if you guys have you've seen it, right?
SPEAKER_06Femme.
SPEAKER_03Yes, it it would have had those tones. So Femme is about a uh a drag performer who gets um assaulted at the beginning by a bunch of like hooligans, it's a British thriller, um, but that m causes uh her uh to not will not not do drag anymore. And then later on, uh as a man, he seeks out one of the uh guys who attacked him and um to like plot revenge against him, and they end up being in a relationship, and it causes like push and pull of this push and pull of like you know, identity and you know what what's acceptable and not and acceptance and masculinity. Who was in this? Um the well uh a very hot guy. Uh George McKay George McKay, he played the lead in 1917. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he played he plays the hooligan.
SPEAKER_04Who directed this?
SPEAKER_03It was Sam Freeman and I gotta look it up.
SPEAKER_04I don't know this one.
SPEAKER_03I can't pronounce this other name. Uh they're Korean. Oh. I I I'm sorry, I'm not gonna pronounce it. Do you? There we go.
SPEAKER_01Oh Sam.
SPEAKER_03That's the one. It's a very good, very good tense film.
SPEAKER_06It was like two, three years ago.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. 2023.
SPEAKER_01There we go.
SPEAKER_06So sad. The ending.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that ending is a gut. It's definitely not like this movie, but a lot uh there's similarities.
SPEAKER_06And that's what I I feel like that's what I'm trying to say too. Like, if this was me today, I feel like the tone would have been the same as Femme.
SPEAKER_03You think so? Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06It would have been more emotional.
SPEAKER_03A little a little dark uh a little more like It would have been dark.
SPEAKER_01Pretty. Let me ask you a question regarding this film. How did you guys feel about the pacing of the movie?
SPEAKER_03I I thought I was gonna have an issue with it at the beginning. Um I appreciated the opening tracking shot, but maybe my brain's a little fried in that I was like, you know, after that happened, I was like, okay, let's I I have a weakness for opening tracking shots.
SPEAKER_04Like, even as far as to say, like, that opening tracking shot, and I know what you did last summer when you go to the last voice. I don't know what it is. I'm just a sucker for like You should see the player.
SPEAKER_01I don't know if it's a it'll change your life. Okay. The movie game. Robert Altman. The opening tracking shot will change your freaking life. I'll watch it. It's the ultimate opening tracking shot. I'll watch ever.
SPEAKER_06You should watch Happily Ever After.
SPEAKER_01Guarantee it. You know what I just realized is opening shot, you will you'll it will change your life. Go ahead. All three of uh uh the what's it? Maybe it's because I watched it.
SPEAKER_03I just said that uh that opening tracking shots are like Interloper has an opening tracking shot.
SPEAKER_04Maybe it's because it's my fascination with Bridget. Yeah it's tied with that. I agree with that's the movie better than the pace.
SPEAKER_03I I I was not bored once.
SPEAKER_04Because and I think to I agree with you quick side thing and we'll go back. I think to it's casino, you don't you know it's it's you're sh shot on location, we see the carnival, the water, the beach. I'm like, it's cool. Like I think it's cool, like practical. And that's it. Yes, Travis.
SPEAKER_01I think how about you, Sam? What did you think about it?
SPEAKER_06I think I'm the outlier. I've there were moments where I just like played with my phone.
SPEAKER_01Gotcha.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, see, yeah, because I was a little worried in the sense where because I remember Daniel told me part, you're like, oh yeah, it's good, it moves quick, because for me, like I said, I had no idea what it was gonna be about. And then for me, everyone's like, oh yeah, like don't look up anything. So for me, I was almost thinking, like, okay, like what kind of movie is this gonna be? For a second, I'm like, is it gonna be one of those that's gonna be like a difficult watch? Because it's something like hard candy, like, is it about like I'm like, so that's when I then saw someone getting kidnapped. I'm like, okay, is it gonna be there's like some torture going on in this movie? You're fucked up.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so that's not thinking that Dan would recommend you something like a hard candy, it's why.
SPEAKER_04But that's and that's why then I was thinking, I was like, that's why then I was thinking, I was like, and that's why I was so confused because it's like, well no, uh Dan, that's what's confused. I was like, because I heard that, but it was conflicting, but Dan also liked it. And Dan doesn't typically like those kind of movies. So I was stressing out about this movie. So when I started watching it, it was already getting later than usual when I watched a movie. So then I was like, okay, I hope the pacing's kind of good, because then I was like, I don't want to get tired, I don't want to fall asleep. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06When did you watch it? Yesterday? Yes. Today.
SPEAKER_04Last night.
SPEAKER_03What time? Because I did too.
SPEAKER_04No, see, for you all for y'all, you're gonna be like, that's early. 6 p.m.
SPEAKER_03No, I'll start in the movie around like nine. Bitch. Oh, you started before me. I started at um like 10 30.
SPEAKER_06No, see, I think wait, I started on Sunday, but then I had 30 minutes left. Sorry, I started um yeah, 30 minutes left, and I watched it at midnight. Yeah. So I was after you guys. Wow. Oh. Because I came home at 11.
SPEAKER_01Gog. Me? Um I watched it on Sunday at 6 p.m.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's a decent time. That's a decent Christian time. Followed by The Simpsons. Sunday.
SPEAKER_01And then I watched uh that plays on TV line? No.
SPEAKER_06Then he watched Hard Candy.
SPEAKER_04No, I was generally like, what's this movie about? Because with the title The Crying Game, it could mean so many things. I didn't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's fine.
SPEAKER_01You got a lot going on. You had a lot of thoughts there, buddy. I was a decent amount of crying in this film. Watch the movie.
SPEAKER_06If it's not actual crying, it's them saying crying game.
SPEAKER_04There's no Alright, I'm done.
SPEAKER_03Was there anything that you guys didn't like about the movie? I don't know that I didn't like anything. I thought everything was pretty above board.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I thought screenplay.
SPEAKER_01I think it was eliminated for six Oscars.
SPEAKER_04Oh, damn.
SPEAKER_01No, I mean It's a good screenplay. It's well written.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I I think it's a good screenplay. I think, you know, the directings, I think it's directed well. I think it's acted really well. Um I don't really have many complaints.
SPEAKER_06I think What are the complaints then?
SPEAKER_04No, that's what I'm saying. Like I can't I don't have any like major ones.
SPEAKER_06You know who Fergus reminds me of? Christoph Waltz.
SPEAKER_04Really?
SPEAKER_03Really? The way it looked. Yeah. Oh, you know what? I can kind of see it if you squint your eyes.
SPEAKER_06No, not at all. No. What I think.
SPEAKER_03I thought it was I thought it was funny uh at the beginning when they're when they were like, oh, you're the handsome one. And and I saw I was like, okay, I guess. And then when he got the haircut, I was like, oh, I kind of see it.
SPEAKER_06I thought he was cute with that shaggy hair, and then when he got the haircut, I was like, oh. Yeah, yeah, he was a handsome man.
SPEAKER_01I don't think I'd ever seen him before this movie, though.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I was gonna say what else was he in.
SPEAKER_01Well, he was in the interview of a vampire, right? No, he was yes, he was uh He was a stat.
SPEAKER_03No, he was He could have been, he could have played it better than this time. He wasn't a big character, but he was um Antonio Banderas' right hand man. Oh yes.
SPEAKER_06Alright, let's watch that again.
SPEAKER_01But he did he did a he did a lot of movies. I just he was in Greta.
SPEAKER_06Greta. Greta. Did you watch Greta? Greta.
SPEAKER_01It was fine. I'm pretty sure I saw it, yes.
SPEAKER_03Let's see. His first movie was Cry of the Banshee. He was a villager. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06Oh my god, Dan. Have you seen the trailer for Wild Horses Nine? What?
SPEAKER_03Oh Wild Horse Nine? Yeah. It looks fun.
SPEAKER_06I think we should do a reaction for that one. Yes, we should. Right now.
SPEAKER_04Banshees of Inner Sharon. I that I totally said that wrong.
SPEAKER_06No, you said it. You said it better than me. Banshees of Inner.
SPEAKER_04He also did In Bruges.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, did you watch three billboards? Did you watch three billboards? Seven Psycho Birds. Same character, writer. I like three bows. It's with um Malkovich and Rockwell for this one. Oh, cool. Oh, and what's her name? Parker Posey.
SPEAKER_04And uh Steve Buscemi.
SPEAKER_03Love Steve Buscemi.
SPEAKER_04We'll watch the trailer after.
SPEAKER_03So did you guys know that Steven Rea, the the lead in this, his wife, was actually in the IRA?
SPEAKER_06Damn. Close to home.
SPEAKER_03Yep. She was uh arrested sh and uh went to jail. She joined in 1971, and she was sent to jail for the old Bailey bombing of 1973. Then she was released in 1981, and then she married Stephen Ray in 1983.
SPEAKER_02Nice. Yeah. She's hard to do that.
SPEAKER_01Where have you been for the last 20 years? I was in prison for you.
SPEAKER_04That's only the thing, like, kind of I I mean, I guess I can blame just my ignorance, like, with events in history when they were like, oh, with the whole IRA thing and the British. I was like, I don't really know too much about it. About the terrible twos. Yeah, I know that, but I'm like, I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I mean, like we're talking about bombings, all kinds of things.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I know. That's why I said blame my ignorance. Like it's on the I I haven't gone too deep into it, but uh there was a show that came out recently that I heard was really, really good. Uh I haven't seen the show. Um, but the the thing that really stood out to me was that uh while hearing uh like tangential mention about the show, the people that were talking about it were saying how during this time people would go and like do things like this and then just go back into like regular day-to-day and just act like nothing happened, like nobody would talk about it, but then there would be like bombings and stabbings and like massacres, and then people would just go about their daily lives. Like it sounds insane to me.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but that's crazy. They do I feel like that's the correct way to do it. Rather than just like advertising it, you know? Well, yeah, how they do it now.
SPEAKER_01That's a good point.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, so it was on Netflix. It's called Say Nothing. That's a definite thing. That's the name of the show. Oh, it's it's a I think it's what's funny is that it's um it's based off of Oh, okay. You know what's funny is that the Stephen Ray's wife is a character in the show. I guess she's one of the leads. That's how that's how instrumental she was, I guess. Yeah, that's crazy. Oh wait, yes, yes, yes, yes. Okay, so she had um, I believe she had actually given details about who the leader of was about this. And um every episode of this show starts with a disclaimer saying, like, so-and-so um denies any involvement, blah, blah, blah. Like, for legal reasons, they have to say, like it's like Fargo. Yeah, but it it's very like it's a wink, like, they're saying that it's not true, but it's pretty fucking true.
SPEAKER_06Believe it.
SPEAKER_03Fascinating. We should we should cover the show too, Dan, right?
SPEAKER_06I can't wait. Try it to do it again.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01No, you don't want to watch the terrible twos. Terrible twos. I was just looking at Paul McCartney, who wrote a song called Give Ireland Back to the Irish, which apparently was banned out of England, wouldn't play the song on the radio. I know they played it out here. That was considered to be very um controversial because he, as an Englishman, was bashing the English government. Yeah, the the the whole English and Irish thing has been awful. Yeah. This lasted for 40 years. For a long time. It's insane. It's terrible. Not to mention the Northern and Southern Ireland is just bombing each other because of the Catholics and the Protestants. This is a very difficult country.
SPEAKER_03We say In our current country.
SPEAKER_04We've got it all figured out. No problems here.
SPEAKER_03See you all next week. It's all good here. But I mean No, I I I think It's a fascinating time uh to put a movie to set a movie like this that's about um internal and external struggles while the countries involved are also going through a lot of tension. It's it's pretty smart writing, which I guess means that they were really good at writing, which is why they won the best The Academy Award Bestus Award. The bestest of the bestest of the rest.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it's a good screenplay. It's well written.
SPEAKER_03Uh without. Is it well written, Dan? I think so. There there's been a couple movies recently that I've kind of looked at some of the dialogue and been like. Obsession. This was not that case.
SPEAKER_06Uh should we do final thoughts? Sure. Wait, I have the perfect sound for that.
SPEAKER_01Gone. Final thoughts. Is it gone?
SPEAKER_06Is it gavel actually gone?
SPEAKER_04Oh, was it? It sounded like that. Oh, I thought you were knocking like you were like, I got I got things to say.
SPEAKER_01Let me spin the final thoughts dial. You can't forget it. Travis, it landed on you.
SPEAKER_04No, it didn't.
SPEAKER_01As crazy as that was.
SPEAKER_04Um, so no, I think I mean I've I've shared, I think, most of what I have to say about it. Um my final thoughts were Shh. Hey, Dan, you're gonna I have the microphone. You're gonna listen to everything I have to say.
SPEAKER_01Sorry, I fell asleep for a second.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's funny. Stephen Ray is also a character on this show. I just saw Um Character on our show? No, he's a character on the show about the troubles.
SPEAKER_04Very nice. But no, I overall, yeah, I enjoyed it. I thought it was well written, well directed, everything. And are you all ready for my score?
SPEAKER_03You all ready for this?
SPEAKER_04Well, that's kidding.
SPEAKER_03That's all you're gonna do.
SPEAKER_04Well, you're rushing me out of here. You're asleep. You're sleeping. Tell us your score.
SPEAKER_01Oh, hmm.
SPEAKER_04Tell us.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'm awake again.
SPEAKER_04Tell us your skull. Um, I'm going to give it four out of five. And if you guys don't like it.
SPEAKER_01Can I ask you a question real quick before you give the score? Yeah. When the movie was over and you push stop, what was your what was your absolute present feeling? What was your like stop? Whatever you did, what was your initial feeling at the end?
SPEAKER_04No, my initial feeling was it was just like I liked it, and I said that movie, because I guess like at the beginning, I thought it was gonna be like a war thing. I was just like, oh no, it was a I thought it was a very well-paced movie.
SPEAKER_01Like, um Those were your that was your feeling? Wow, that was well paced.
SPEAKER_04No, you know, I see what you're trying to do, Dan. What are they trying to do?
SPEAKER_01I'll I'm not trying to do anything. I can tell you when I stopped, I went, wow, I I really liked that movie. That's what you said? Yeah, I've I've I felt really good about it.
SPEAKER_04I thought I thought you wanted I thought you wanted something more than that, because I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I wasn't looking for depth at all.
SPEAKER_04Oh. Order the court. No, I thought I thought it was a good movie. Um no, I think my score I'm gonna give it a 3.5 out of five. Um see, I don't even have an object yet. I didn't even I w I didn't I wasn't thinking of one the entire time.
SPEAKER_06Dicks.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_03Um that's a lot of jokes.
SPEAKER_04No. 3.5 out of 5 scissors, shears. You're naming things, you're gonna be distracted. I'm trying to annoy Dan over here. Well, you're annoying me. Um, I'm gonna give it 3.5 out of 5. Um God help us. Telling the bartender to tell this person that I said this.
SPEAKER_06That's such a Travis thing. So elaborate. Cool.
SPEAKER_01Thank you, Travis. Who's next?
SPEAKER_06I'll go.
SPEAKER_01Wait. Yeah. I'm spinning the dial of who goes next. Dan. You just flipped me off. No, I didn't. I'm flipping my guns. Dead.
SPEAKER_03Sam, it landed on you. That's crazy. I thought he was gonna pull a twist off.
SPEAKER_06I I feel like I I honestly, okay. If you were to ask a question to everyone here about like how they felt afterwards, I'll ask you, how did you feel? I don't know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's that's fair.
SPEAKER_06It's like at first, when I watched it, I was okay, I don't think I'm gonna like this movie. However, the last 20 minutes won me over with how um Dill was, how she found out, and how she killed Jude. Like that whole tie in was like great. But I don't think I would watch it again because I don't think I connected much with like the beginning. I wanted more of the relationship between Dill and Fergus and things like that. Um yeah, so I I still don't know how I feel, but I will still give it three out of five. Pieces of meat. Ew. Um they mentioned that in the beginning.
SPEAKER_04Dill Pickle is just a piece of meat toch for after. I was like, I really like that ending scene. Me too. But like I agree with Sam with me too. It's like I wanted I think more of that, like that opening 20, I wish it was long more established.
SPEAKER_06More established. I thought that was I swear to you. I swear to you.
SPEAKER_04And that's why I'm at a 3.5. But same at three.
SPEAKER_03That you felt that way about the movie. Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_04Alright. It's between you two.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah-da-da-da. Why are you making that face?
SPEAKER_06We should give Dan last.
SPEAKER_03Okay, Frank, go. Um I I I like the movie. I th uh well, going into it, I I didn't think I was gonna like it. Um, just based off of the initial pace. I was like, okay, is it I hope it doesn't drag. Uh, but then as as they were working on the relationship with Fergus and um Jody, I was like, okay, that I could, you know, I could I could get into this. And then when it opened up after he went back to Lond uh England, London London.
SPEAKER_06London.
SPEAKER_03Go to the metro, take her to a margarita, go to the metro. Um, I really started liking it, and um a lot of that is due like Stephen Ray is really good in the role. He's very, very um, and then losing him and Forrest Whitaker, you're kind of like, oh, okay, well that that I thought that was gonna be the uh the main focus. The main focus, the draw. Now that he doesn't have someone to play off of, what what is it gonna be? And then when Dill comes in and and you know completely takes that over it's like, okay, yeah, okay, all right, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. For sure, for sure. Let's see where this goes. And uh luckily there was enough charm and um grace and like good storytelling to not make that transition awkward or or feel lesser. So ultimately, I think the film does a really good job of um telling a story in an interesting way with uh good performances, camera work, um, you know, ever everything about it I thought was really well done. Um, and served the story. Didn't none of it like detracted it for me. So I'm gonna give it.
SPEAKER_06Oh boy.
SPEAKER_033.8 four out of five. Dill pickle. Dill's pickle. Dill's pickle. Four out of five. Um four out of five. I don't want to do dill dill's pickle, you know? I don't want to, because I feel like that's the obvious thing. It wasn't though. Four out of five cunty wigs. Because Jude had Jude had some cunty wigs.
SPEAKER_04A blonde?
SPEAKER_06She did.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_06What does she have, Travis? Blonde what?
SPEAKER_03What kind of wig? Blonde.
SPEAKER_06What the fuck did you take? Where did you take it?
SPEAKER_04I took it a long time ago.
SPEAKER_03It was probably when I was doing that.
SPEAKER_06Alright, let's let's introduce Dan's final thought. Hold on. I guess it's me. Do you have a final? Perfect sound. Play it into the mic. I'll play it as a done. Oh, exactly. Where did that come from? Yeah, five seconds. Five, four, three, two, one.
SPEAKER_04I'm playing it when he's going.
SPEAKER_06Well, you're introing it. I'm going.
SPEAKER_01And now it's time for Dan.
SPEAKER_06It took him that long to fucking do it. Um.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna keep it really simple. I when the movie started, having not seen it since 1992, I was concerned because within the first like 10-15 minutes, I was like, oh wow. Is this the movie? Meaning the pacing. Is this where I'm going? I think the movie's biggest strength, honestly, is it just gets better as the as the movie goes on, it just keeps getting better. For me. The story just gets more interesting, the turns get more interesting, the relationships get more interesting. I think you're right. You're kind of tied into, you know, uh Jody and Fergie, and then you're like, well, where are we going? And then he meets still and like, oh my god, we're going to another level, and then they come back, the IRA people come back. I just think the movie just keeps getting better and better and better, and I think the ending is great. I love the way the movie ends. Um Yeah, I'm really glad I saw it again. I I I wasn't sure. I always get nervous when I'm watching a movie a second time that I haven't seen for a long time. Like, is it actually good? Or is it just gonna be another Anzio, which is that horrible World War II movie I saw as a kid, then I saw it again as an adult and went, this sucks. But no, I I I really appreciated watching it again, and I and I do think it's well done. Um I don't disagree with ever what everybody's saying, but I overall feel like the movie, the journey is really interesting and ultimately works really, really well. So I'm gonna give the movie a 3.8 uh last cigarettes out of five.
SPEAKER_04I've never had a cigarette before. I don't smoke.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and uh didn't he actually say on his last cigarette he doesn't smoke.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it just like just seemed like the right thing to do. And I think at that point too is when I was like, he's not pretending. Yeah. He's what? He's not pretending.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Alright.
SPEAKER_06So that was fun.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Can I really quick, sorry, I when when I beginning of this podcast, I wasn't sure what kind of conversation we were gonna have. Right. I felt like this is a really good conversation. Like actually it's like half, what the fuck are we talking about? And like half, oh, okay, that's a really good idea.
SPEAKER_01I felt like As is tradition.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01When I s when I said uh when we talked last time, I was oh let's do that. We should we should do that movie. Then after we said yes, I started thinking, oh crap, I hope this wasn't a bad decision. But after watching it, I thought this should be a pretty interesting conversation. This movie's got enough to talk about.
SPEAKER_06I think you went through what we would go through every time we announce a movie. Like, damn, is Dan gonna like this movie?
SPEAKER_01Well no, I'm probably not gonna like the movie.
SPEAKER_06Except for Battle Royale.
SPEAKER_04Oh no, it was the cold medicine.
SPEAKER_01I love that movie so much. That's I was so sick when I watched that movie. It was so great.
SPEAKER_06You've seen it four times since then.
SPEAKER_01That movie was sick. I was just laying in I was laying in bed and I was so sick, going, God, this movie's so good.
SPEAKER_03May I suggest the next movie? Yes. So I would like us to stay in that 1990s era. Love the 90s. I don't know which one if any of you have seen this movie. I think at least one of you probably has. Have you guys seen Set It Off? I have never heard of it. It is uh a uh it's F. Gary Gray's debut feature, I think. Uh don't look it up because uh the Google.
SPEAKER_04I just don't see the post it up.
SPEAKER_03On Google, don't read it because it does spoil some some plot elements in the submarine. I'm not gonna be able to get the book. But it's a it's a heist film with Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, Jada Pinkett Smith, and I do like F. Queen Latifa, what year? Uh 1996.
SPEAKER_04I do like F. Gary Gray.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and Kimberly Elise in her first Set It Up. Set it off. Oh, oh wow. Yeah. It's a it's Can you post it on our on our on our text chat? Yeah. It's it's I think it's it's worthy of discussion, and it's also a heist film.
SPEAKER_06So I think it smith, Vivka A. Fox.
SPEAKER_04Maybe we'll do like a heist film.
SPEAKER_03Not Will Smith's wife, ex-wife. Yes. Situation ship. Situationship.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Maybe we'll go on. Maybe we can do some heist films after this.
SPEAKER_06Gone in 60 seconds. Italian jobs.
SPEAKER_03Fast and then oh. There you go.
SPEAKER_06But the the remake with Mac Wallbutt. What is the is it called Town? What did I say?
SPEAKER_01You said 60 seconds. Isn't that just it to Italian? Who's his name's movie? Uh uh Ben Affleck? He directed it, right? Yeah. I believe so. That was a good movie. Wait, what?
SPEAKER_06Didn't Matt and him write it? Did he?
SPEAKER_01I don't think Matt Damon had anything to do with it. So he just directed it?
SPEAKER_04Ben Affleck has directed it. We should do Fargo.
SPEAKER_01I love that movie.
SPEAKER_04Um it's kind of funny looking. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01What are we gonna talk about? Fargo. Yeah. It's so good.
SPEAKER_06Minnesota.
SPEAKER_01God, that's good. That's such a good movie. I think Fargo might be the one movie that from the very beginning I'm just going, no. No. You're an idiot. William. Don't do that. Yeah, you're an idiot. Stop. Stop now. Stop. Stop. It's such a bad movie. You ever see The Perfect Plan? Simple Plan.
SPEAKER_04Directed by Sam Raimi.
SPEAKER_01No, no, not the one with. Oh, Simple Plan.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, with with um with uh not Bill Pullman.
SPEAKER_01No Bill Paxton.
SPEAKER_04Bill Paxton, and it's also Billy Bob Thornton. Did you see? Oh, I've seen it, yeah. Directed by Sam Raimi.
SPEAKER_01That's another movie where you're going, no. Have you seen it? No.
SPEAKER_06No, but we're watching it. Don't say it, yeah. Don't think we should.
SPEAKER_01Isn't that another one of those movies?
SPEAKER_06Okay, but then speaking of Sam Raimi, then we need to watch Drag Me to Hell.
SPEAKER_01We should be simple plan's worth watching.
SPEAKER_04That's a movie that I think they should show for Bleak Week at American City. Drag Me to Hell? No. Oh. A simple plan.
SPEAKER_01Maybe we should watch that one sometime.
SPEAKER_06That'd actually be a good one to cover, I think.
SPEAKER_01I think you would enjoy talking about it.
SPEAKER_06Okay. I feel like we need to have our own version.
SPEAKER_01Just so you know, the title isn't. It's not a simple plan. I figured.
SPEAKER_06We need to have our own version of Bleak Week.
SPEAKER_01Bleak Week. I don't know what Bleak Week is.
SPEAKER_04They play movies that are for lack of a better word, very bleak. Like they play like sometimes they'll play like uh um Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer, followed by what's the one that's the Rabbit movie? That's probably bleak.
SPEAKER_06They were doing like piano teacher, the muggy movie. It's also Mitsumar, it's the one hereditary stuff.
SPEAKER_04It's it's the one with um the one that we watched that the when when they just remodeled the Egyptian. Um the one Dustin Hoffman. I always forget the name of it. It's the one with the Donald Dran's in the beginning.
SPEAKER_01Oh no, no. That's called um Straw Dogs? No. Lake Mongols? Um then they're straw didn't like straw dogs. No. And then they moved to that is a fucking bleak name.
SPEAKER_04I don't think it's Dustin Hoffman, it's the guy from Body Snatchers. Yes. Oh, Donald Sutherland. Donald Sutherland. It's it's it's the name of the thing. Not mouth venice. Fuck. And they go to Venice. Yeah, I know what you hump up.
SPEAKER_06I don't remember the name of it. I'll look it up.
SPEAKER_01You saw Straw Dance with Dustin Hoffman?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, shit. I bought it. I blind bought it. Okay, here's the thing.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I actually think it's a really good thing. Sam Peckinpaw directed that film. He did the Wild Bunch. He was like he's the father of violence, man. Don't look that way. Sam Peckenpah's the father of Hollywood violence. I mean, like bleak, like really heavy.
SPEAKER_06Okay, but then I also watched The Last House on the Left. So I didn't feel like Straw Dogs was bleak enough. Even though the subject was absolutely horrendously terrible. What about I spin on your grave? Oh, that was a great one.
SPEAKER_01Just the title. Just the title. They actually had to change the title. They gotta change the title.
SPEAKER_06I don't remember what it is now, but they had to change the title.
SPEAKER_01Alright, this has been so much fun. I was like, are we keeping on with just rambling? But you know what? Why not? Let's have some fun.
SPEAKER_06Can I tell you though, for Bleak Week, when they end bleak week, they have to play Paddington just so that people can like feel better.
SPEAKER_03That's so cute.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. We should make a fake end credit segment and just have it playing over.
SPEAKER_06Really? That's how Paddington makes you feel?
SPEAKER_01It just it looks so stupid.
SPEAKER_04Thank you. Watch this, watch Paddington 2.
SPEAKER_06If he doesn't want to watch the first one, why do you want to watch the second one?
SPEAKER_01Why would I go to the street? Because I've seen Paddington 2, but none of the days. You know what? That's that's that's your naked gun too logic. Um I don't know. I spit on your grave was originally titled.
SPEAKER_04What plot can happen in Paddington where if I see the second one, I'll feel lost. Day of the women.
SPEAKER_06There you go. That's what it was. That's what it was.
SPEAKER_01You got that right. Alright, I'll see you all. Well, this has been a wonderful. Actually, it's been a great time. And uh please, please follow us, like us, review us, like us, send us money. Subscribe. Subscribe.

SPEAKER_01I'm trying not to enjoy the joy that we are spreading across this beautiful country we live in today.
SPEAKER_06Wouldn't change it for the world.
SPEAKER_01Wouldn't change one single thing. And it's irreversible. And until next time, my name is Dan.
SPEAKER_04Travis. Oh, Sam.
SPEAKER_01Frank. And this has been Strangers in the Alps, a movie podcast, and we are all together now.
