In this episode of Queen’s Opinion, the crown is polished, the standards are high, and settling is officially canceled. Inspired by Jessie Reyez’s “It Couldn’t Be Me,” The Queen breaks down why some women accept less than they deserve—and why that mindset has got to go.

From men who can’t choose to women who forget their worth, this episode serves truth with a side of sass and zero apologies. If loving yourself, setting boundaries, and refusing to be anyone’s “placeholder” sounds like your vibe, pull up a chair. Because one thing is clear: it couldn’t be me—and it shouldn’t be you either.

Theme: Self-Worth And Standards

SPEAKER_00

My voice, my opinion, and you're listening in. The lyrics of the song depict some women as weak, fragile, and broken people willing to accept any type of behavior from men. Before she gets to her first verse, Jesse said it couldn't be me. Well, I am 100% in agreement with you, Jesse. I am not the one, baby. I need all my sisters out there to know you are worthy. You don't have to settle for less. We're going to take our time. Just take just a few minutes to break this song down by Jesse Reyes. I am going to do what the queen does. Give you my opinion of the situation.

Verse One: Men, Choice, And Respect

SPEAKER_00

In verse 1, Jesse says, I heard that men, men never choose. The one that they really love is the one that they lose. She ends up being the one they daydream about in a suburban house with a woman he settled for. She was better for him, I guess. God bless, but it couldn't be me. She said she heard men never choose. Right up front, ladies, you should know that a good man makes good decisions. We still have good men out there who know how to pick, choose, or select a good woman and stay with a good woman through rough times and good times. If you found a man out there that can't make up his mind about a woman or changes women like he changes his clothes and his shoes, then honey, keep it moving. He is not the one for you. Jesse goes on in verse one and says, the one that they really love is the one they lose. See, the man was shown love and given love by a good woman, but he chose to make poor, bad decisions with the little head in his pants. Now he realizes the poor decision he made, and he wants to find someone like her, the one he let go. Why do we have these women out here that don't know their worth and they will do anything to be with a man like him? Because she showed him love. She showed him she was willing to be in second place. So he chose her. This man chose a woman with low self-esteem, low respect for herself. So they get married. But

The Cost Of Settling And Losing Yourself

SPEAKER_00

see, with a man like him, he's never going to be satisfied with a woman like this. And she realizes that he is never going to be happy with her. Jesse tells us ladies again, it couldn't be me. The queen is just that, a queen. And I don't settle for this type of man who has no respect for me or the commitment he made to me. Couldn't be me, baby. Tell him, Jesse. In the course of the song, Jesse tells us that this woman takes good care of herself. I would go on record to say if she takes good care of herself, she's taking good care of the home and taking good care of him. The course says she's got her face beat and she's always home, and she put to sleep every dream of her own. And she lets you go cheat as long as you come home from searching the streets for someone like the one you let go. This course bothered me. It bothered me because to put your dreams aside to be with a man who doesn't love you breaks my heart. This type of woman has no ambition. Well, I should say the only ambition this woman had was to find her a man and be a housewife. And from that standpoint, I guess she got everything she wanted out of her relationship. But not having the opportunity to fulfill other dreams in your life is heartbreaking. The course goes on to reveal that she noticed that her man is not happy with her. So she lets him go out and cheat, but she expects him to come home to her. Her man is out there searching for a good one like her. And she don't even recognize it. Do you want to know why?

What Strong Partners Actually Want

SPEAKER_00

Do you want to know why? Do you want to know why it's not working between the two of you? Okay. Hold on to your wigs. I'm about to tell you why this type of relationship doesn't work. You have no respect for yourself, sister. You have low self-esteem for yourself, sister. You have no ambition or drive for yourself, my sister. My sister, you have no love for yourself. You have shown this man that you are not worthy of him. You have shown this man that he can do anything to you, and you will accept it if he doesn't leave you as long as he comes home. I will go on record to say that most men want a strong woman, a ride or die woman. Men want a woman to show strength when others see them together as a couple. Men want a woman that can stand on her own two feet and won't take his bullshit. Men want a woman that's going to let him know I love you, but I am not going to put up with your bullshit. He wants a woman that's going to challenge him. My sister, you are not representing yourself in a strong light, nor are you painting a picture of a strong, wise woman. In the words of Jesse Reyes, it couldn't be me, baby. The queen is not this type of woman in this song.

Verse Two: Changing Yourself For A Turn

SPEAKER_00

In verse 2, Jesse goes on to tell us, I heard that girls, girls never learn. I change everything about myself, hoping I'll get a turn. Just to be the one he dreams about. In a two-bedroom house with a wife he doesn't even love. She was easier, I guess. God bless, but it couldn't be me. Okay, Jesse Reyes, in the second verse, you threw me off a little bit because you said girls never learn. I pray that they learn something from your song and this episode. You said that she changed everything about herself, hoping she gets a turn. What woman wants a turn with this man? You had me thinking that the second woman is a cheat, just like the man in the song. The second woman changes everything about herself, according to you, and she is hoping she gets a turn to be with this man. So she can be in the two-bedroom house where he lives with his wife. He doesn't want the wife he has now. So, what makes you think he is going to love you or treat you any differently than he did or that he is doing with the one he has at home? Jesse, go ahead and tell them, God bless, couldn't be me. I tell my girls that you show people what you will take from them. You show them how to treat you. So if you allow people to talk to you any kind of way, treat you any kind of way,

Teach People How To Treat You

SPEAKER_00

and they can get away with it, that's on you. We can't control other people. We can't tell people what to do or say. But what we can do is teach them. Teach them what we will not accept from them. Ladies, please take inventory of your personal warehouse. You are worthy of love, worthy of dignity from all people. I tell you this, Queen is not the one that will accept disrespect of any kind, nor should you.
