Jan 13, 2023 Episode 5
Danroe Oosthuizen

Todays guest is Dr Juan Janse van Nieuwenhuizen, a Clinical Neurophysiologist specializing in sleep medicine. He is no stranger to self improvement for the betterment of the patient. Alongside his PhD in Neurophysiology, he has also completed a BTech in Clinical Neurophysiology, enabling him to practice as a Neurophysiologist at his practice. When he's not seeing patients, you can find him filling the role of Senior lecturer in the Dept. of Biomedical Sciences at the Tshwane University of Technology.

As healthcare professionals, we are often in search of more time as  it’s a field well known for its long hours and busy schedules. This leads us to often neglect sleep, an important factor in our own health. Dr Janse van Nieuwenhuizen dives deep in the intricacies of sleep, and why it’s important to keep in mind how we schedule rest in to our daily lives. We discuss why caffeine is a staple in the lives of many and why it’s seen as a method to negate fatigue. We also discuss different pathologies that could create imbalance in ones sleep pattern. I highly recommend the episode to anyone who is interested in understanding sleep in the hopes of enhancing one’s own sleep patterns.
