Live From Bitcoin Beach
Michael Ruiz: When I came to El Salvador, that's kind of what I discovered. So in a lot of ways, yes, El Salvador and the opportunity that exists here is like a second chance for me. It's one where I've never felt more aligned in my life. It's a country that's been built on a Bitcoin standard, as far as I can tell. That's the trajectory that I see it on.
There's so much that comes from that. If the foundation is stable, there's a lot that you can build on. There's that alignment in the sense that it's being built from sound principles, and there's so much opportunity. And the people here are amazing. I'm originally my family. My dad's side is from Honduras. We all have a big Honduran family.
And so it's also part of that where I feel like I am returning back to my roots in a sense. And it also the opportunity allows me to sink my teeth into entrepreneurship. And like I said, build businesses that provide a lot of value to people.
Mike Peterson: So in addition to the shipping business, I think you got like, I don't know how many other things. I feel like I see you doing real estate stuff. I know you got a conference going on, and I know you guys recently set up a studio. So let's talk about the studio first. I know you've got your, as your producer, is that correct?
Michael Ruiz: Yeah, Marty is my producer.
Mike Peterson: Your producer's sitting in here with us. He was just sharing. He's the second person to get residency from Estonia and El Salvador. Yeah, yeah. Congrats. He was disappointed. It wasn't the first. We'll have to find out who the first was. So it's, yeah, great having you guys here. So tell me about the studio.
Michael Ruiz: Yeah.
Mike Peterson: What's the idea? What's the,
Michael Ruiz: So this is the other interesting thing because there's so many opportunities here in El Salvador. So things got started getting thrown my way. One of the things that's beautiful about social media—there's a lot of negatives—but one of the things that are beautiful is that it allows you to connect with people and allows you to get a message out there. And, you know, fairly easily. Everyone basically has a studio in their pocket with the iPhone.
And so I found content the way to, you know, develop a personal brand, an authentic personal brand, one that represents me and my values and my messaging that I want to get out there. And, yeah, people started reaching out to me because of the content I was making. "Hey, you want to you want to show a property?" you know, they would ask me. "You want to show a property for us since you got a social media presence and you seem to be all right on camera, good on camera?" And so I was like, yeah, let's do it. Why not? Let's see. Let's see where this takes me again.
Like it's starting fresh. You don't know what paths to take until you kind of experiment a little bit. So I started doing like real estate showcases and started a five-minute podcast, which you were on, where I was just wanting to talk to people, and I said, "Hey, why don't we just put this on video?" Especially I want to highlight all the good stuff happening in El Salvador and all the people that El Salvador is attracting.
And so I was like, five-minute podcast, you know, there's no pressure. I can ask them on the spot, and if they want to, great, and if they don't, no big deal. And so started with the five-minute podcast. And then, you know, during during all of this, my business partner who was still in Hawaii, you know, he was really thinking about moving here. He has a wife and kids, so it's a little harder for him to just make the jump like I did.
And also, he's on the other side of the world. I was in Miami. It's a quick flight from Miami. So, he was he was really looking at what's happening here. He came for the Halving party, and there was so much energy at the Halving party. So much excitement, so much optimism. I mean, bitcoiners, it...
Mike Peterson: It was a fun event. I like the fact that it, I mean, I had a little bit of the conference element, but it was mostly the, the hallway, you know, fun stuff that you actually go to a conference.
Michael Ruiz: Yeah. It was a different way of engaging with bitcoiners without the corporate nine-to-five schedule, kind of feel. You hang out by the pool, and conversations were just flowing easily, and I made so many great connections and so did he. And we were able to develop awesome content from it. And, you know, that really had a, a like it was well-received on Twitter.
And so he felt the magic there. He was like, "Oh, what can we do? What can we do?" And so he was really starting to think about coming to El Salvador and starting to make those moves. And so once he came here, that's when, you know, we started saying, "Okay, well, if we're going to do something here, we're going to need a team and we're going to need a community."
So we had the idea of doing like these webinars or these community calls of people that are interested in El Salvador, that see the promise that El Salvador offers, that see the alignment and values. And, "Hey, come join our webinar. I'm here in El Salvador. Jordan's coming." Let's see if we can, you know, create some type of synergy already, and then bring it into the real world here. And so that's…
