WORD ...so they brought the boy. But when the evil spirit saw Jesus, it threw the child into a violent convulsion, and he fell to the ground, writhing and foaming at the mouth. “How long has this been happening?” Jesus asked the boy’s father. He replied, “Since he was a little boy. The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” Mark 9:20–23 THOUGHT In desperation, a loving father who was unable to help his son turned to Jesus and begged of him, “Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” Jesus responded quickly, “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Some consider Jesus’s tone here to be one of bewilderment, frustration, or rebuke. Perhaps. But I hear from him the confident, resolute, “Of course I can, and I will!” Then with compassion and overwhelming certainty in the power and authority of his Father, he ends the long suffering of the man’s son—and transformation comes! The authority of Christ is not limited. All authority in heaven and on earth is his. There are no boundaries and no limitations; there are no restraints of any type to keep Jesus from doing what he desires to do. When God determines something to be done, there is no if; there is only anything is possible if a person believes. The same Savior who rescued a boy from the clutches of darkness and liberated him to the divine potentials of a God-led and covered life, can also deliver you from whatever evil you think stalks. PRAYER Father, your Word is clear: I can trust you for deliverance from the evil one. Still, I have times when doubt creeps in. Yes I believe, but help me in my unbelief. You are the Lord; with you all things are possible. Amen. But rescue us from the evil one.
