WORD Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” John 18:36 THOUGHT Many enjoy novels and films entertaining the mysterious, abstract, and intangible, but few believe in actual supernatural realms, areas of creation outside the natural realm in which we live. Most of us believe and accept what we understand, see, touch, smell, and hear. We base our choices and philosophies on the practical, measurable, predictable, controllable, and, of course, the comfortable. Writer A. W. Tozer, in his book The Pursuit of God, used the phrase “other-worldly” in reference to the set-apart uniqueness of the kingdom of God from the natural world. While the earth represents a bit of his creation, God’s magnitude, authority, and ability exceed our imagination’s capacity. The grandness of God’s kingdom stretches immeasurably beyond our comprehension and into other-worldliness. In this world, we are like children standing on the seashore, gazing across the water to the horizon’s edge. We think we can grasp the ocean’s size by what our eyes can see, when—in reality—we can only see a few miles ahead. The same is true of our limited capacity to take in the fullness of God’s created kingdom and his will for our lives; for now, we are limited to only what we can see, and his kingdom is not of this world. We may not always understand his commands—especially the command to forgive others like he has forgiven us—but he is God and we are not. PRAYER Father, you are the King of kings and Lord of all the heavens and earth. You are holy and majestic in all your ways. You are Creator of all things seen and unseen, and I bow humbly before you. Help me understand your commands, and help me fulfill them for your glory—especially forgiving others like you have forgiven me. Amen. Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
