Treat Your Business

153 Belief Lens: Shifting Mindsets to Elevate Your Clinic

Katie Bell Season 1 Episode 153

I'd love to hear from you 'text the show'

Welcome
This week on the Treat Your Business podcast, I'm taking you behind the scenes of our recent live strategy days with our Thrive members. This was one of the most powerful events I've ever delivered, filled with breakthrough moments, laughter, tears, and a lesson about how our belief lens shapes our business.

Episode Summary
This episode is all about the belief lens through which we run our clinics and businesses. I share a deeply moving story from our strategy days where Jojo and Pete, long-time clinic owners, confronted the beliefs that were holding them back from paying themselves what they truly deserve. We dig into how money beliefs, often picked up in childhood, can create ceilings in our business and keep us stuck, even when everything else seems to be in place. You'll hear how a powerful coaching moment helped Pete challenge his fears, rewrite his story, and finally take action to value himself and Jojo first in their business. I also share practical steps to identify and upgrade your own beliefs so you can create more freedom, profit, and satisfaction in your clinic.

Key Takeaways

  • Your business is being run through your belief lens – your current mindset shapes every decision you make.
  • Childhood money beliefs can still be running the show in your business today, creating invisible ceilings.
  • Real change happens when you challenge and rewrite these beliefs, not just by adding more strategy.
  • Paying yourself first is essential – you wouldn't skip paying your staff, so don't skip paying yourself.
  • Action steps: Reflect on your money beliefs, rewrite them, and take practical action to prove your new belief is possible.
  • Surround yourself with people who have the beliefs you want to adopt, and repeat your new beliefs often.

Treat Your Business EP153

[00:00:00] Katie Bell: It's Katie here and welcome back.

[00:00:03] To the Treat Your Business podcast. Today's episode is a little different, and I want to take you behind the scenes of our most recent live strategy days with our fabulous Thrive members. These two and a half days were honestly some of the most powerful I think I've ever delivered.

[00:00:25] I've ever been part of the energy in the room, the breakthroughs, the tears, the laughter. It was all really incredible. And one moment in particular, honestly, I think, well, it took everybody's breath away. I was having to stand behind a screen. And so whilst this was happening I'm blaming all my hormones, but it was one of those moments where.

[00:00:48] You know that the people involved in this situation are gonna have a massive breakthrough. And it all came down to this one truth, and it was that your business is being run through your belief lens. And I wanna share that story with you today because I know if you are listening to this podcast, you are a clinic owner and your clinic, your business as it is now, has been created.

[00:01:14] Through your current belief system or your belief lens. So I know that this episode is gonna land for you as well.

[00:02:37] Apply to your new account.

[00:02:41] Katie Bell: Okay. So let me set the scene. We were discussing a, or we were doing a session on money mindset. And before you roll your eyes, I promise you it wasn't fluffy, sit on a cushion, wave some incense kind of stuff around and meditate on, how much money we wanna make in our lives.

[00:03:00] This was practical, it was real, and. Really raw work that directly impacts how you run your business there. And then in the room. And there was a lot of resistance to start with by, from some people. There were those in the room who'd done a lot of mindset work with us before and we're really open to this.

[00:03:19] But here's what we did, we were talking about. Basically making more money in our business and not being the last paid person in the clinic, not being the poorest paid person in the clinic. Certainly from a pro-rata basis. And we were asking big questions as to why we felt we should, we are the last paid people.

[00:03:41] Why we are the ones that don't feel like we can increase our salary. And if we do, it goes up by very small increments and why we feel like, we should be the ones taking all this risk. Working all of these hours and not really making the money that we wanna make. And I asked everybody in the room to write down on a blue a post-it note a money belief they'd picked up when they were growing up that was still showing up for them today.

[00:04:09] So this is something that they'd heard from their parents, their teachers, their family, somebody in authority, and it usually. It's picked up from the ages of Naugh to seven if we were being sciencey about it. And o often we think that we can't remember back to being Naugh and seven, but there are things that you will have heard, experiences that you will have had that has.

[00:04:33] At the time when you are naugh to seven, you basically just believe everything that your parents say is true. And the brain doesn't actually know what's true and false. It just knows what is. So when you experience these money beliefs or these attitudes or these actions or these experiences, when we are young, we just believe that to be true because what?

[00:04:54] We don't understand that we can, that we have our own minds at that age. Some children absolutely do have their own minds at that age, but something that you've heard from your parents, your teachers, your family, those people around you that were an authority to you. Things like money doesn't grow on trees or you have to work really hard to make money, or people like us don't earn that much money, or you can't buy.

[00:05:19] Or we can't buy what we can't afford. We have to save before we buy things. And we discuss this at length around what is it that is still showing up for us in our business because. You can put as many strategies in place as you want when it comes to making more money. And yeah, you absolutely need to raise your prices.

[00:05:40] You absolutely need to change the way that you do things in your clinic. You need to be more efficient with your software and your technology. You absolutely need to be running the Profit first model in your accounting. You need to be hiring a players. You need to be making sure that they're working for you.

[00:05:57] All of those things. Absolutely. But ultimately. The decisions that you make in your business and how you lead your business, whether you are a sole trader or whether you have a big team and a massive clinic will only ever elevate to the level of your beliefs. So if you still have a belief from when we were younger, that is still showing up for you.

[00:06:18] It's gonna create a ceiling for you in your business. So we were walking around the room, all coaches, and we could see how powerful this was because those beliefs, they don't just stay in your childhood, they are still running the show today. And I have beliefs that are still running the show because we sat there and we all said we're not all where we wanna be.

[00:06:42] And so therefore, there must be things that are still showing up for us. And when you hit the next level in your business, your beliefs. Like they don't ever, how can I say this? They don't ever just go a lot of the time. You don't just suddenly decide, oh, okay, I'm just over that now. I'm just gonna you don't have to work really hard to make money.

[00:07:03] Okay? I'm just gonna decide today that you actually can do no work and make loads of money. That's now what I believe. Most people can't do that, but what we have to do is turn up the volume on a new belief and turn down the volume on some of these other beliefs. When we think about hitting the next level in our business, and that might be taking your income from 500 pounds a month to a thousand pounds a month.

[00:07:25] It might be 3000 pounds a month to 4,000. It might be 5,000 to 10,000 if I said to you now. Okay. James, Rob Emma, I want you to double what you take home. What instantly comes up for you there? What goes on inside when I just say right from tomorrow? You need to take twice as as much money as you are doing now.

[00:07:46] Okay. You might go I can't afford to do that. Oh, okay. Is what's going on there? Or we don't have enough staff for me to make enough money to be able to pay myself double, or we can't charge enough money for me to make myself. Be able to pay myself twice the amount, and all of these things are actually limiting beliefs.

[00:08:07] They are running the show in your business today. So think about it. Your current beliefs around money shape, how you set your prices, who you hire, how your staff perform, the decisions that you make in your business, the risks that you take or that you don't take. Literally everything and here is the absolute kick in the balls.

[00:08:28] If you want to elevate your business, grow your profit, take home more money, you cannot do it on the same belief system that got you to where you are now, we've gotta like top with we've gotta up level the lens that you are looking through. Because the lens that I look through will be different to how the lens that you look through and the lens of somebody who is a multi multimillionaire is different from the lens that I look through right now.

[00:08:59] So this is where the budget happened. I was walking the room and I. I have had permission to use these clients our members' names. They are really happy for me to share this story because actually it helps so many people in the room and I wanted to pay that forward and help lots of people who listen on this podcast.

[00:09:18] So I was walking the room and jojo who is a clinic owner, said, Katie, can I just have your help? Because the thing that I've written on my blue Post-It note is actually. And Pete is her fabulous, gorgeous husband. So I said, oh, okay, that's interesting. That's projection. What's going on there? And I said, okay, what is it?

[00:09:42] And on Jojo's post-it note, she had written that basically the issue that they've got in their clinic, the reason why they can't pay themselves more money in the clinic is because Pete believes. They can't afford to pay themselves anymore. So they're bottleneck all the time, although they're loggerheads as to, jojo wants to pay themselves more because they deserve it.

[00:10:00] They've been in this business a long time now they pay everybody else, and Pete thinks, okay, if I'm gonna do it, let's increase our salary by 50 pounds. And so we've got, Jojo felt that the biggest barrier was what Pete's beliefs were. And this really caught our attention. Now, poor Pete had no idea that I was gonna pick on him.

[00:10:23] And I would, I just wanna be clear here. I would only do this to people that I know could handle this and people that I know, they've worked with us for a long time and they they would totally be good with this,

[00:10:34] but they also are really open. To making more money. Like they, they, this, it's now

[00:10:41] is the time.

[00:10:42] We can't just keep delaying this. So they run that clinic together and Pete's big belief was that we can't afford it. And I'm sure that is a very familiar belief for a lot of you. So we invited them up for a hot seat where throughout the days that we worked altogether, we had people come up.

[00:11:02] Because often they bring challenges that most of the room are struggling with as well, and we then coach them on a one-to-one basis. And what unfolded was one of the most emotional, powerful coaching moments that I've seen ever in a room because, pete was there and he shorts his flip flops sat on the chair and he had a very closed posture to start with.

[00:11:23] Arms crossed, legs crossed, and that is a real sign of when there is a big kind of resistance to what we're about to explore. And because we've worked with Pete for a long time, Philippa said, Pete, un crush your arms. Just be open to this. And Pete is a great sport and he went along with this.

[00:11:42] And what came out for Pete was that and I have got permission to share this story, is that Pete had lost his dad at a young age. And so from the age of, I think it was 16, and forgive me, Pete, if I've got that age wrong, he stepped into the role of being a provider and really that shaped everything. His fear of failure, his drive to protect his belief that he always had to hold back just in case, was really prominent for Pete at that age because he wanted to look after his mom. Now that served Pete for a long time. All the and so he thought, but the problem was they'd been running their clinic for eight years.

[00:12:28] The reality is that they're still the lowest paid people in their business. Certainly from a prorata basis because the hours that they are working, both of them clinically and non clinically are wild pe still it is at lots of sporting events where it's lots of evenings. They've got young children.

[00:12:44] They are, the juggle is real and they are opening two new clinics in the next I think in the next six to 12 months. And the staff earning more than them, even though they're the ones working the longest hours, carrying all the risk, making all the decisions and investing in another clinic to then offer more opportunities was becoming, I think a huge strain.

[00:13:11] And a frustration. And what then happens when we feel frustrated, when we feel like there's a strain is we move into a state of resentment. And that's lethal in our business because we make some really bad decisions when we are in the frequency of resentment or anger. So we had to do some deep work on

[00:13:35] this because.

[00:13:37] This belief lens that if, like Pete's

[00:13:43] biggest worry was fear of failure, what would people think? That he had to be the protector. He had to be the, like a part of him knew that jojo could also earn the money and she does 'cause they both run their clinic, but a part of him still felt like it should be him.

[00:13:58] There will be a part of Pete in there as well that feels like he doesn't deserve to be paid anymore. So there's a self-worth and a self-confidence thing going on there. And Philippa, who is our mindset coach, you heard from last week on the podcast she's just a fabulous human being. She just nailed this so well, and she said, okay,

[00:14:19] so what does 16-year-old Pete need to hear?

[00:14:24] What did 16-year-old Pete need to hear to know that he can and

[00:14:32] he won't fail. He is a success. Everything is gonna be okay, and that he does deserve to be the highest paid person in his business and more. And there was like this whole holding of breath as I was trying to hold the sobs in from behind the screen.

[00:14:51] It was very emotional and Pete said he just needed to have been told by somebody, a male, that it was gonna be okay

[00:15:04] and that he wasn't gonna be a failure, and they would, they would go on to be a huge success. Pete chose somebody from the audience and it was Rob. And Rob is a great sport and he came up even though this was quite a big thing to do, and they had to stand and face each other.

[00:15:22] And Rob had to pretend to be 30 5-year-old Pete. Like now the, now Pete, and he had to stand there and tell 16-year-old Pete what he needed to hear. And this is where the biggest breakthrough came from because the two men standing at the front was emotional enough. Rob was, felt very emotional delivering this to Pete, even though it wasn't his belief and it wasn't him that was necessarily the one having to go through this.

[00:15:55] He said it was very

[00:15:57] powerful for him as well.

[00:15:59] Pete took this moment to hear it from 30 5-year-old Pete,

[00:16:03] that he's good, that he doesn't need to provide and doesn't need to be the only one doing this, that he's not a failure, that the clinic's doing really well, that he deserves to pay himself more, and that if they do nothing bad is gonna happen.

[00:16:17] And I said to Pete, okay, because I'm all about taking action, what would make you feel. Uncomfortable but not unreasonable, unreasonably, uncomfortable. If you were to pay yourself some money today. And he said the business actually owes us two and a half thousand pounds. And I said what would happen if you transferred that money to yourself today?

[00:16:41] And his eyes widened and he, you could see his arms crossed again 'cause his belief system is literally being challenged in real time. And I said, do you have access to your internet banking, Pete? And he said yeah, I do on my phone. And I said, okay, do you trust me? And he said, yeah. And I said, go and get your phone.

[00:16:59] So a member bought his phone over to him and he got his phone out. And I said, just do it. Just transfer it now. Pete's red. And we talk about colors a lot and reds need evidence and they also need worse case. Like they just need, just do this. No fluff. Get on with it. And they also need to know okay, I'm gonna be really rational here.

[00:17:22] Worst case scenario, what would happen? Worst case scenario is we just put it back. So we got his phone out and he transferred him himself and jojo, two and a half thousand pounds into their personal account from their bank account. He showed me the proof of when it happened. The whole room went wild and they agreed because I said, okay, I've got the second thing I want you to do therein, then to set up a standing order to pay themselves more every single week.

[00:17:49] And I said, rather than wait till the end of the month. See what's left in the business and then directly transfer yourself some money, which I guess is a lot of what you guys are doing right now. Or you are paying yourself the personal tax allowance divided by 12 and then topping up with dividends where here and where you can.

[00:18:07] I said, I want you to look now at what you are being paid as a couple in your business, and I want you to elevate that. I want you to look at where you want it to be in the next 12 months, and then we'll do a gradual increase month on month to, towards that, or you can now just elevate it a little bit.

[00:18:25] Then in three months we'll review it and do it again. They agreed to do that and they, I said, okay, I want you to set yourselves up a standing order so you are paid weekly rather than much better for cash flow rather than monthly. Because here's the thing, you wouldn't not pay your staff. So why on earth would you not pay yourself?

[00:18:46] If you pay yourself last, there's never any money left. But if you pay yourself first, you'll find a way to make the rest work. And this is uncomfortable for some of you. And I know some of you will be thinking, yeah, but we're not making enough money. I promise you'll hustle. Like

[00:19:02] fuck to make it happen because you would not pay other people.

[00:19:06] This is the biggest shift for many

[00:19:10] of you is to prioritize your own pay. Because if we had to replace you in your business, we would have to pay somebody a lot of money to do that. So you are absolutely worth that. And more so Pete and Jojo had this, Jojo was on stage as well. She was mainly just crying like I was because this was a real big moment for Pete and for them in their business because they're about to take on another premises and then another one after that.

[00:19:38] And I just said, when is it gonna change? Like how big do you need to be before we start prioritizing you? You both, because when you come at that second clinic, third clinic with that different energy of. You being the most important people in there and that you are upleveling your, the lens that you are running your clinic through,

[00:20:02] your clinics go on, gonna go on to be more successful, much more quicker.

[00:20:06] So it really was a very wholesome

[00:20:11] moment and it was really powerful. And this is the power. Of mindset work. This is why it's so important that we don't just teach you strategy. We work on you because you are the most important person in your clinic and in your business. And we have to do the work on you first before, before anything else is gonna work.

[00:20:33] And I, I shared that those two things that I always do when I am struggling to get to the next level, whatever the next level might be. And that is that I stop pushing. And I double down on my mindset work. So we can't just get busier, we can't just do more shit. We can't just out strategy, all of those things.

[00:20:54] I have to pause, slow down, do less, and then really double down on what is going on for me in my own mindset. So let's pause here because I really want you to reflect. Those of you that are listening to this right now and are like really ready to take home some more money and make your life a whole lot easier.

[00:21:15] Those of you who are maybe in your business and feel a bit lost as to is this it? Is this all that it's gonna be? What beliefs are running your business right now? What did you hear growing up about money and how is that belief still playing out in your business today? Maybe it's that you feel you can't raise your prices or you think if I raise my prices, I'll be the most expensive in the area.

[00:21:42] Nobody's wanna, nobody's gonna come and see us. That is your truth. It is not the truth. It is just your truth. The brain only knows what is, it doesn't know whether something is true or false. And the problem when we have a belief system that is really strong is the ego looks for evidence to support the belief that we believe.

[00:22:02] So when you believe that you can't put your prices up because you'll then be the most expensive in the area, nobody's gonna come and see you, you will your ego's okay, so we can't do that. Because if we go against that, we're in a very unsafe position. It looks for evidence to, to reassure us and to keep us believing that.

[00:22:20] And then I hear these excuses and these things that you say, and I'm like, where, what is going on there? That is such a load of rubbish, but it's just what you believe to be true or maybe that you feel like hiring. You are never gonna find an A player. If you believe that, that's exactly what you're gonna get in your business, you're gonna be surrounding yourself with B players.

[00:22:45] Maybe it is that you don't deserve to earn more than your team. That's exactly what you're gonna get in your business. Your business will just about make enough money to pay you that measly amount that you are doing right now because that's your belief system. Your beliefs take your actions. But here's the truth.

[00:23:04] Your business is being run through this lens. So if you wanna take more money, if you wanna create more freedom for yourself, if you want to grow a sustainable, thriving business, you've got to change the lens. And it doesn't have to be huge dramatic shifts. It might be as simple as transferring yourself two and a half thousand pounds today, or setting up a stunning order or deciding to value your role as the owner just as much as you value your staff.

[00:23:30] So there's three questions that I would love you to sit with after this episode. What belief around money did you grow up with? How is that belief still showing up in your business today? And I promise you it is. Otherwise you wouldn't be where you are now. And what would change if you rewrote that belief?

[00:23:49] So what we were then went on to do on a pink post-it note, funnily enough, is we then re, we just decided if we get to decide what we believe is to be true, why don't I just believe something different? So if we rewrote that belief, and one of the things that I. I had many things when I was growing up that I remember, but one of them is that you have to work really hard to make money.

[00:24:13] And so for the first probably 5, 6, 7 years maybe, of my working, my business life, I just thought I needed to just double the amount I was doing all the time. Just work harder and harder. And as you all know, the story, it just leads to burnout, exhaustion and not really enjoying your business and not really significantly making that much more from a take home point of view.

[00:24:35] So if that belief for me was still holding true, then I would

[00:24:44] be running my business by just working harder all the time. I'm working less hours than I've ever worked. Obviously I have a new baby, but I have had to really work on that belief to allow me to have protected time off because. If I believe that I have to work really hard to make money, surely me being off is meaning that I'm not gonna make any more money.

[00:25:06] Guess what guys? I'm still making the same amount of money, or I'm paying myself the same amount of money and I'm actually not in the business either. Businesses almost at all, apart from going to my strategy days last week 'cause I love them so much. So

[00:25:21] if you rewrote that belief and the belief was you just need to work smarter to make more money.

[00:25:29] You took an action to prove

[00:25:32] that this belief now is what you do believe and that the old belief is actually wrong. Because if you believe that, could you stand up in a court of law and say that you actually have to work harder to make money? Could you actually, no, you couldn't because there are lots of people in this world that haven't worked that hard and made a lot of money.

[00:25:52] So actually, how is it? How is that belief true? That's not very helpful for me. And so when we rewrite this belief, there's a part of us that's I still don't believe it. Still don't believe it. There's a part of me that still doesn't believe it yet. There is always gonna be that we just have to turn the volume down on it and we have to turn the volume up on the new belief.

[00:26:10] So for example, I would look for evidence. I would go and find people that aren't actually working that hard, that make a lot of money. I have friends that really work very few hours and make a foot load more money than I do. Great. I need to spend more time with those people because that proves to my ego that the new belief that I am really trying to turn the volume up on actually might be true.

[00:26:35] And I need to repeat it often. So we then got everybody to write their beliefs like everywhere on your screensaver, on your phone, on your computer. As a alarm that goes off three times a day on your phone. As you like everywhere, wherever you need driving on your visors, you flip it down where you brush your teeth everywhere.

[00:26:55] You can possibly write this belief so that your brain is seeing it all the time. You will start to see that shift. Now, I want to say this. The moment with Pete and jojo was just one of dozens of breakthroughs that happened across our strategy days. That's the power of being in the room. People walked away with clear strategies.

[00:27:17] Absolutely they did. But more than that, they walked away lighter. They walked away with these beliefs. Being, the volume being turned right down on a lot of them that had been holding them back for

[00:27:32] years.

[00:27:33] And there was so many of those light bulb moments when they realized that, oh shit, if I believe that, that's why I'm seeing that in my business.

[00:27:41] I. That's the power of this community that we have created. Because you can listen to this story on the podcast and I really hope it inspires you. But being there, being surrounded by all these other clinic owners can you imagine being in a room of 70 other like-minded clinic owners being coached through your own blocks, watching these light bulbs go off all around you?

[00:28:05] There is nothing like it. Maybe you are listening to this and you're thinking, I really need that. This is really uncomfortable for me. Katie's hit the nail on the head. There was a lot of stuff going on there that I need to work, I need to work on. I dunno how to do it. You need your sh, you need your mindset to shift.

[00:28:23] You need to elevate your business. You need to stop paying yourself properly. Then I urge you to step out of your comfort zone and be at our next live strategy day in November, we only open the doors. This is a new thing that we are doing because we wanna impact more clinics, and so we give non-members the opportunity to come to one.

[00:28:47] Of our strategy days when you are a non-member and the next one is only a few weeks away. This is a whole day when we have all of our members together, ascend, which is our top level program for clinic owners that are running, big six and seven figure clinics. We then have our elevate members who are there, who are running big six figure clinics with team.

[00:29:11] And we have our activate members there who are sole traders. All running smaller clinics, all have their own challenges going on. And we have our evolved members coming this time, which are our, we call 'em all babies. They are often new into business or they are making less than 3000 a month and really need those foundations or.

[00:29:38] They just weren't ready to make that next step, and they needed to get some foundations in place. They're gonna be there as well. And you have the opportunity. We have one table available for some non-members to join us. And guess what? You also get an invite to our client Christmas party, which is happening on that evening as well.

[00:29:57] We have entertainment, which is not me singing to you. We have everybody celebrating our clinics together. And this is really gonna uplevel how you feel. It's gonna uplevel your energy, your motivation, your inspiration for 2026. We are gonna be really working on yes, your strategy for next year. How you can ensure that you are gonna finish next year, paying yourself more and having more time back.

[00:30:21] You've just gotta come and experience this for yourself because one breakthrough could literally change the entire trajectory of your business and your life. So a huge thank you to Pete and jojo for allowing

[00:30:34] me to share this story. I'll leave you with this.

[00:30:40] Your business is being run through your belief lens.

[00:30:42] If you wanna elevate your business, elevate your beliefs. And remember, if you wouldn't not pay your staff, don't not pay yourself. Value yourself first and your business will rise to meet you. Thank you for joining me today. I hope Pete and Jojo's story has inspired you as much as it inspired us in the room.
