EP 2: The Immigrant Experience - Interview with Dr. Alexis Melville

Melissa Gonzales Season 1 Episode 2

Join us on this episode of All Parts Welcome as our host, Melissa Gonzales, interviews Dr. Alexis Melville, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who specializes in working with adult immigrants and those who feel like outsiders in their community. Dr. Melville shares her experience of being born in Jamaica and immigrating to the United States at a young age, and how that has informed her work as a therapist today.

In this interview, Melissa and Dr. Melville discuss the challenges of navigating cultural identity as an immigrant. Dr. Melville opens up about the struggles she faced growing up, not feeling black enough for the black community or Jamaican enough for the Jamaican community. She shares how these experiences led her to pursue a career in psychology, with a focus on helping first and second-generation immigrants embrace their unique identity and find a sense of belonging in their new home.

Throughout the conversation, Dr. Melville highlights the importance of embracing one's identity and cultural heritage, and how this can impact mental health and overall well-being. She also shares her work with the LGBTQ community, particularly with universities, and how she has been recognized for her advocacy as a Staff and Faculty Ally of the Year.

Join us on this enlightening conversation with Dr. Alexis Melville and learn how to embrace your identity as an immigrant and create space for your family to grow.
