EP 11: A Southern Multiracial Experience - Interview with Nyomi Tarpley
In this episode of All Parts Welcome, Melissa Gonzales talks with Nyomie Tarpley, a Licensed Professional Counselor practicing in South Central Virginia. Nyomie shares her experience growing up in the South with a white mother and black father, navigating complicated family dynamics and facing prejudice from people in the community.
Nyomie also shares how she struggled with her identity and often felt like she didn't fully belong in either the white or black communities, leading to feelings of isolation and insecurity. However, as she grew older, Nyomie realized that she didn't need to fit into any particular mold and that her unique blend of cultures and experiences was something to be celebrated.
Nyomie discusses how her own journey towards self-love and acceptance has influenced her work as a counselor, and how she has used her personal experiences to create a guided journal to help others grow in self-love as well. The journal encourages individuals to reflect on their own experiences and explore their identities, while also providing prompts and exercises to help build self-esteem and a positive self-image.
Join Melissa and Nyomie as they dive into the importance of self-love and acceptance in our multi-racial and multicultural identities. They also discuss the ways in which we can empower ourselves and each other to embrace our unique cultural backgrounds and use them as a source of strength and resilience.
