Podcast Awesome: Font Awesome 7 – More Icons, More Power, Less Hassle
🎙 Host: Matt Johnson
🎨 Guests: Jory Raphael & Noah Jacobus, Icon Designers at Font Awesome
Introduction
Matt Johnson:
Welcome to Podcast Awesome, where we chat about icons, design, tech, business, and nerdery with members of the Font Awesome team.
I'm your host, Matt Johnson, and today I am joined by our two beloved icon designers, Jory Raphael and Noah Jacobus. Today, we’ll be talking about all the new features in Font Awesome 7, including:
- All of the awesome new icon packs for the ProPlus plan
- The under-the-hood improvements that make your icons run nice and smooth in your projects
Alright, let’s get into it with Jory and Noah!
Kicking Off Font Awesome 7
Matt:
Well, thanks, fellas, for coming on Podcast Awesome. We’re really excited because we’re in the middle of a campaign right now with the launch of Font Awesome 7. This is all very exciting, and we wanted to give folks kind of a preview of all things Font Awesome.
I thought it would be great to have you guys on to give us the rundown on this.
Jory:
Because it’s our fault that there are a bunch of new icons.
Matt:
It’s your fault.
Noah:
Yep.
Matt:
I mean, at this point, I don’t even—I mean, you know, I’ve got a calculator, but I just don’t... I don’t know how to keep up with this.
So, I mean, what are we going to do about this? It’s like Tribbles or something, you know what I mean?
Jory:
Star Trek.
Noah:
I got that reference.
Matt:
Yes! I know what you mean by Tribbles.
What’s New in Font Awesome 7?
Jory:
Yes, Matt, Font Awesome 7 has been announced! It includes:
✔️ A ton of new icons
✔️ A ton of icon improvements
✔️ Brand-new icon packs
And we just—we made it because we wanted to keep Noah super busy. That’s the reason. And then we were like, “Oh, you know, we might as well give it away to people as well and let people use it.”
Matt:
That’s not to say—just because we give it away, though, Noah, it doesn’t mean that there’s not—you know, the work that you do—so we just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your icon design.
Noah:
Well, I really appreciate that. This is the first time I’ve actually been let out of the basement to see the sun since I started working on these.
Matt:
Well, it’s lots of firsts today. We’re glad that you’ve seen the sunlight. And, you know, I gotta say, like, you look pretty good for being stuck down in the basement. I figured your eyes would be bulging at this point.
Noah:
No, I haven’t gotten full Gollum—Gollumification—yet.
Jory:
But he did have perfect vision before going down, though.
Major Upgrades in Font Awesome 7
Matt:
So, yeah, I mean, there’s a lot of stuff to talk about, including some great icon designers that have created some of the ProPlus icon packs. And we’ll get to that.
That’s super exciting.
So maybe we could start with sort of big picture stuff. What is it that makes Font Awesome 7 different than, say, Font Awesome 6 or other versions of Font Awesome?
Jory:
It’s one more.
Matt:
Yep.
Jory:
We added one. We added one to the version number.
Matt:
First comes six, then comes seven. That’s how it works.
Jory:
Yeah.
Matt:
That’s good math.
Jory:
Yeah. The big differences with version seven are:
1️⃣ If you use Font Awesome 6, Font Awesome 7 will just work when you upgrade.
We have made—we’ve worked really hard to make the upgrade path super easy. You know, you just swap out—if you’re using a kit, you just change the kit version to 7, and your icons just magically update on all your sites.
2️⃣ We spent a lot of time looking at the core key shapes in all of our icons.
So those are kind of like the basic optical building blocks for the icons themselves.
We took those, looked at them, compared all of our existing icons to them—the version 6 icons—and realized that a lot of our icons were either:
- A little too big
- A little too small
- Or some of the spacing was a little off
So Noah and I spent hours and hours and hours and hours looking at every single one of our icons and lovingly updating them so that they are the best they can possibly be.
Final Thoughts
Matt:
So, Version 7 at its core includes:
✔️ Improved icons
✔️ Over 300 new icons (and more in the works)
✔️ New square canvas sizing for perfect alignment
And under-the-hood improvements so your icons look better everywhere.
Noah:
Yep, a lot of checking for consistency, reviewing, and second-guessing various stylistic decisions that have been made over a decade—and kind of holistically looking at the whole deal.
Matt:
Awesome. Well, fellas, thanks for taking some time to talk about all things Font Awesome.
And remember, folks, to lock in that sale price before it’s gone.
We’ll see you on the interwebs soon.
🎙 Go make something awesome.
Jory:
You make something awesome.
Matt:
Jory, how about you make something awesome?
Jory:
I just did. They’re called Font Awesome 7 ProPlus icon packs.
Noah:
Go make something awesome.
Matt:
Ooh, I like that. Man, we should, uh, trademark that phrase.
