On this episode of At the Plate, I got my Memphis kenfolk DJ Larry stopping by, and he talks about his father leading him to become a Mets fan, meeting Hank Aaron and Penny Hardaway, and my disastrous encounter with Bob Gibson. What is good, good people? You are now listening to another episode of At the Plate with Danny Foxworth. I am your humble narrator, Danny Foxworth, and once again we're joined by an extremely special guest. This guy, man, Memphis born, Memphis made. He's one-third of the Show You Work podcast crew. He's a DJ, just a man about town, and we're going to get into some things. So without further ado, we got the good brother DJ Larry in the building. How are you doing this evening, brother?

SPEAKER_02

Man, thank you for having me on, Danny. And I just want to say it's always great when I can look at someone else's background. I can have like background words of somebody else, because like your whole funk shui in the back is so cool. I'm like, yeah, man. I like how you put that together, man. Especially with the posters and different stuff, too. So yeah. Appreciate it, man. It inspired this for the record. So I just want to think about it. No kidding. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Hey. Wow. See?

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's too early to be making me blush, man. But first and foremost, we spoke over the phone, and um you were talking about lining up this uh this recording, and you said you didn't want to do it until after the outcome of the Duke North Carolina game, the the uh part the part two. So you know what? I'm here, we got our ass whooped, I'm licking my wounds, the floor is yours. Talk your shit, bro. Okay. As a diehard Duke, well, DJ Larry's a Duke fan, I'm a UNC fan, and yeah, they they cut our ass Saturday night. So go ahead, man. Take your victory lap.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, but but here's the thing, right? I'm a realist at the end of the day. And all jokes aside, I genuinely wanted to play Caleb again. So what happened with Caleb? Because I'm like, okay, he got like a little injury with the left hand, you know, he should be back in time. Then he broke his thumb and it's like he's out for the year. And I'm like, damn, because I think the brother's really talented, and you know, you're at the top right now. So let me let me come to you as a man, because I thought this season was gonna be so much differently in the National Basketball Association, but I didn't know Anthony Davis wasn't gonna bulk up with the Whataburger, and he still made a glass. So I'm like, hey, the playoffs with the Thunder would be a great matchup because you know the Thunder having beat us in the playoffs, my Dallas Mavericks, and I'm like, hey, that'd be great. So as somebody on the lookout for, you know, Boozer, DeBanster, Peterson, Mikhail, Brown, Acuff, and Caleb as a potential future Dallas Maverick, I want the young brother to do good. So I hate that he had to have that injury. So yeah, but y'all knew y'all weren't gonna come into our house and do that. And that's the crazy part about our rivalry. Like, it's always one and one. It's never like like last year was an anomaly. That's why I was joking so much. It's always like y'all beat us at home, we beat y'all at home, and then like it's a wild tournament game. So, yeah. So it it was a it was still nice to see um Sar going off and watch the other guys do their thing, but I wanted Caleb to be out there, man. Cause I'm like, I need to, I need to get my full get back for the last one. That was one of the worst collapses I've ever seen in my life. But again, a win is a win, so hey, take it, take it, take it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. But yeah, and when I saw the news that he broke his thumb, I'm like, oh boy, and he's gonna be out for the year. I was like, well, damn. And then I would just periodic, because I was driving during the first half, so I couldn't really watch the sit in front of the TV to watch it. And then when I saw, had time to check the score, and I saw we were only down five and a half, I'm like, okay, okay. And then about 10 minutes later, I checked the score. Down 16. Bro, the the wheels completely fell off of the Tar Heel bus. I'm like, you know what? Y'all got it. I ain't even I ain't I ain't got nothing, man.

SPEAKER_02

What can you do? You know what I'm saying? It's just like, yeah, I'm just here.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I feel it.

SPEAKER_00

So, man, the Show Your Work podcast. So if y'all, if y'all not tuned in, man, y'all gotta tune in. Because I'm listening every Thursday, they go live on YouTube and then they put the episode out the following, the following day. Or they put or they go live on Wednesday, sorry. Is it Wednesday or Thursday?

SPEAKER_02

So they do go live on Thursday and then they put on Twitter, YouTube, and Twitch on Thursdays. And then the audio comes out on Fridays.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I've been a guest on their podcast quite a few times, and this it's always a good hang. And so it's him and then his his uh compadres, uh my man Nelson and uh Winston. So, how did y'all link up to Create the Show Your Work podcast?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's real simple. I used to be a consistent voicemail lever on the illustrious Random Exa podcast. So shout out to my boy Ampavelli, shout out to Joe, um you know, so many people. Eric, I mean Devin, like back way back when like Devin was like it was still Devin before Joe. So a lot of people knew what I sounded like, but they didn't know what I looked like. So one day, um I was invited on the show you work by Banks, and then when I went on, they were like, You sound good, and we want to keep you on. I was like, all right, bet. So at the time it was me, Banks, Marcel, and Nelson. Then at the beginning of 2022, Banks went on to go do his own thing, and it just became pretty much me, Nelson, Marcel, and Trey, my brother Trey. So I was like, okay, and Marcel went to go do his own thing too, so it's really just us three. So I'm like, dang, like as much as I like these two, I think we need to add something to it. And we just noticed Winston was just always so involved in the audience, just always helping us out with stuff. So I was like, why not have Winston just come on? Then we found out how funny and how much of a character Winston is. So it was like, it was like, all right, so it it fits a good narrative because it's like, all right, Winston is Winston, and like if you listen to an episode, there's no personality like Winston on this earth. I can guarantee you that.

SPEAKER_00

For sure.

SPEAKER_02

Then there's Nelson who's very informative, but also, you know, with his information he gives you, it's also a great take. It feels like I'm listening to you know sports radio. Yeah. So I always appreciate having him on. And then you get me, who I come in from the approach of a listener, but I also am known for like my blunt opinions, which I'm trying to work on, y'all. But like, you know, it just the person that's like, man, f all that, I'm gonna keep it real. So it brings a great mix of just personality and ideas to a subject versus you hearing the same thing 30 times over. And also, one main thing I we all strive to do is to not talk about the same thing we know other podcasts have talked about 35 times throughout the weeks.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like, you know, we'll have a whole episode we talk about, you know, the differences in water quality or what our favorite ice cream is, or like, you know, I'm a pop Danny with this one, but like, yeah, man, like do y'all remember Theodore Unit or you know, stuff like that? So yeah, man, we've been doing this with this iteration, it's been right at four years now. So the pie five year will be at the end of this year. So I'm just thankful to be a part of it and watch it grow into what it's turned into, man. So I can't complain. I'm really happy to be a part of it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and I'm and I'm happy to fill in, you know, come out of the bullpen, so to speak. Again, I always have a great time chopping it up with y'all because y'all have so many different topics to cover, and it's always interesting. Yeah, man. So, how did you get into DJing?

SPEAKER_02

It's two ways. First way, um, I met a woman by the name of Ina Esco. Ina was one of the first female DJs that I remember out here, and Ina used to work with my dad. So I would always like just listen to the radio and be like, huh, if I did that, what would I want to do? How I want to do it. And this is around 2004, 2005. So as I'm getting older, I'm also becoming, I actually have one right here, the mixtape man, you know, at school. So I'm literally like picking up, you know, I'm I'm the one people hitting up the burn CDs, and you know, I got wallets and stacks of CDs. That was like the main progression of it. And then also I had my friends named Bobby and Nico. They went to church with me and they didn't live far from me at all. They were my sister's age, but they were like kind of pretty much influenced. We would throw parties in high school. They're older than me, but I would throw parties with my friends, and then my boy Sean, who's on the radio now, so shout out to my dog Sean Teasy. And um, he would uh we would do these parties, but like they wouldn't have any music. Like they'd have music, but they wouldn't have music. And it's like I could see them playing the same stuff over and over again. And I just remember being in the middle of a club, like packed out club, and they're like, we need more music.

SPEAKER_03

And I'm like, why didn't you have music?

SPEAKER_02

So I just pulled out my iPod, which I had. At the time, this was still 3.5 ox, and literally I was playing a whole DJ set off of my iPod. You could hear the clicks and everything as I'm rolling the rotary, and um from there I just started just taking on the name DJ Larry, because I mean it's better to say DJ Larry than the dude with all the music Larry, so it's just DJ Larry, and it just stuck with me throughout the years. Now, the other reason is uh the other reason is my mother, shout out to my mom, man. But there was a song on a Mary J. Blige album. Just fine. That's the name of the song, just fine 2007. She would play this song so much, I would want to take the record out and just toss it out the car, but then I'd get the whooping of a lifetime. So I'm like, I don't want to do this. So literally just the control portion, like being able to say, okay, hey, if I want to play what I want to play for other people, and I hope they like it. So that's how I really started the journey. Those two combination things. So all due to women. Happy International Women's Month, man.

SPEAKER_00

So happy International Women's Month, indeed. So now we're gonna talk some baseball. So, what were DJ Larry's earliest baseball memories?

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I can talk about this now because he's not here. Rest in peace to Big Larry, that's my dad, right? And that, you know, my dad passed away when I was 15. There's always stuff I wanted to ask my dad. And I never understood why my dad was supposed to be a Mets fan, but he also wore Yankee hats. Just never sat right with me as a kid. And I'm like, he used to also root for like the University of Memphis and the University of Tennessee, which I'm like, how I don't know how this works for you. Maybe it's just a different generation, but like I've always stuck with my teams through and through, through the worst and the best. Like, I mean, I'm a New York Jets fan for Christ's sakes. I mean, as a as a Panthers fan, we can we can understand each other, you know? Yeah. But I do remember my first memory was the Subway series, 2000 World Series Subway series. And so watching Mike Piazza and that team, and then I would just keep up with it. And now here's the funny thing: I used to play backyard baseball on the PC, and I was like, okay, I'm like starting to get into this. Then I bought a pack of computer discs that was like pretty much an EA sports package that happened, like it came with it if you bought a computer. So I had Madden 03, MVP baseball 03, NHL 03, NASCAR 03. But yeah, yeah, the MVP baseball once they had Randy Johnson on the cover, and I would just watch and I'll just play the game and I'm like, okay, so I'm learning who Randy Johnson is, I'm learning who Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez is, I'm learning about Cincinnati Red. You know, so I'm you know learning these people by the team. And I was like, okay, what team do I want? And I knew my dad was supposed to be a Mets fan, and I was like, you know what? I like their colors, I like the team. Like, you know what? I'll roll with it. And then by the time I got on, that's when David Wright pops up, that's when Beltron pops up, that's when Jose Reyes pops up, uh, Johan, and the whole, you know, that run. So yeah. So that is how I started out being a Mets fan.

SPEAKER_00

So man, dope. So um, what were some of your favorite moments that you remember as a Mets fan? Beating the Yankees.

SPEAKER_02

Listen, I don't um I know people have like opinions on like, oh, this is who you should root for, this is who you should not like. Like, I don't hate the Phillies as much as everybody else does. I mean, I don't like the Phillies, but it's like, eh, they're the Phillies. The Pirates, I don't really care for them, but like I like the hat though. I can't hold you. Like the Pirates hat is one of the best hats. Like, I love that hat, especially the old school one. Love the Pirates logo. And then rest in peace to the Montreal Expos. Uh, great documentary on Netflix that y'all should check out too. But you know, the Nationals, I just remember like them having that big like you on the hat, and I was like, okay, this is gonna do well. This is gonna do numbers in one hood somewhere. But um, yeah, I always just like I just love watching us go against the Yankees. I feel like that's one of the best baseball rivalries. So anytime we would beat the Yankees, that would be cool. Just watching Mike Piazza's last years are always cool because like he still had it, like even at the end, and it's like I didn't realize how many teams he played for until later because I'm like, oh, he was on this team and this team before he got to the Mets. Because I just only knew Mets Mike Piazza. So yeah. But yeah, my favorite player probably coming up was definitely Jose Reyes for sure. I just loved Jose and like man, I'm gonna take a saying from uh old old school black people out here, man. Boy, he could steal the cent out of shit, boy. Like the way he was stealing on bases, man. Dog. I'm like, yo, how is he this fast, man?

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, I love Jose Reyes, man. Number seven, man. Shortstop. Yeah, he was one of my favorites too. And David Wright, man. David Wright, I don't know what it is that was in that water in the 757 during that time period. Because you gotta think it was David Wright, you had Michael Vick, you had BJ and Justin Upton.

unknown

AI.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, AI there was a lot going on in the Virginias in like the late 90s, in the mid to late 90s, man. They were just pumping out talent, man. And also, too, I would go to Redbirds games, because that's the local team out here, the Memphis Redbirds. So I would watch, like, is it Adam Cartwright, the pitcher they used to play for the Cardinals? Adam, Adam Wainwright. Wainwright, yes, thank you. Adam Wainwright, I remember why when he was in the minor league, like watching him. Will you catch a couple poohs games if he came off of injury and had to warm-up and stuff like that? So yeah, I yeah, so I mean I would watch those, but yeah, man, it was that's 757, man. This is a talented state, man. Virginia does not get enough props to me as far as being a part of the South and just conversation in general. Yeah. And as far as just what they contributed to sports, man, like they they got some hitness, man.

SPEAKER_00

They do.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They do. And I'll tell you another one of my favorite Mets, actually, as you just mentioned, uh, Carlos Beltran. And he and he just just got in the Hall of Fame.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So shout out to him. I remember when uh he was with that stint with the Rangers and he tried to have that that shoe polish in his hair like Carlos Boozer did. It was nasty. It was nasty. Dog, that that lineup was disgusting, bro. At least Boozer lined his shit up. Beltron, it was just like, it's yeah, that lineup was inexcusable.

unknown

Yeah, man.

SPEAKER_02

But also, too, I do wish there were a couple mets I could have seen. Because I'm I'm 93, baby, so I do wish I could have seen like the 8016 live like that. That would have been nice to see. Because I used to always hear stories about Drew Gooden and Daryl Strawberry. I mean Doc Gooden. Doc Gooden, sorry. D. Gooden, yeah. Doc Gooden. Makes sense. Yeah, and then even um I used to always hear about how great Nolan Ryan was. So I went back and watched a couple tapes, but like to be able to see that would have been fire. So yeah. And can't forget Daryl Strawberry. Have I ever told you the Daryl Strawberry story that happened in the Discord?

SPEAKER_00

Nah, lay it on me. At the plate and at the plate exclusive.

SPEAKER_02

Alright. So shout out to Earl from Guessing. It was Guessing from the Stands, they just call it GFTS now, so shout out to them, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_02

We were up one night. It's me, Earl, brother AJ, Dodger fans, so you know he's on top of the freaking world. But uh, it's us three and Nelson, and we were what we were talking about the show Ballers, and we were like, yeah, man, you know how to all-star cast. Like, you know, that's probably our favorite role that The Rock ever did. Like, we're just going, you know, we're talking about that. Bruh. Earl tells us that Ricky Jarrett. He said that Ricky Jarrett's dad, which I forget the brother's name who played him. He told us that Ricky Jarrett's dad was Daryl Strawberry. And we were like, that's not Daryl Strawberry, bro. He's like, nah, that was Daryl Strawberry that played him. I said, Earl, that's Bunny Colvin from the wire, bro. That's not Daryl so this went back and forth for like three minutes. And then he literally goes and Googles it, and he's like, Well, shit, I thought that was Bunny Colvin.

unknown

Like, that was Daryl Strawberry.

SPEAKER_02

Dog, every time we see Bunny Colvin, we was like, Look at my nigga Daryl Strawberry. I was like, bro, don't you think that would have been bigger news if Daryl freaking strawberry was acting as a dad on an HBO show? Like, come on, man.

SPEAKER_00

So, yeah. And speaking of the Mets, I always bring them up, but I gotta shout him out again. My dog Mookie Wilson, he's he was the first, well, actually, really, he's the only MLB player that I ever met. And interesting story behind behind how I met him. He's actually from South Carolina. He's from a small town called Bamberg, South Carolina. And during the early 90s, my mom at the time was working as a CAT scan technician. And it was like a she worked, it was like a mobile CAT scan unit. It was hooked to the back of this uh this semi-truck. And they would go to these different counties in in this corner of South Carolina. It was like more of the lower income counties. And she would always go to Bamberg Hot County Hospital on Mondays and Wednesdays. Lo and behold, he was in the hospital getting a CAT scan. And I'm like, this was gosh, I want to say this was like during uh winter break. And so I just rode with her and I'm like the kids at home, they gotta get it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And so he walked, I'm like looking at the list of patients, and I'm like, is that who I think it is? Sure enough, you call in the next patient, and it was Mookie Wilson. I was like, Ain't no way, bro. Like she he got his cat scanned and he talked to me for a little bit, signed an autograph. That's lit to this day, that's still the only autograph I've ever gotten from an athlete. But a man could not have been nicer, man. Like super cool.

SPEAKER_02

So I think this got misplaced, and you're gonna see, you could see my face, so you can see the pain in my eyes with the story I'm gonna tell you. But uh when I was a kid, I remember I went to this fundraiser event they had in Memphis. Because you know, Memphis is a very black city, so you know, we got the Civil Rights Museum, we got the Stax Museum, we got so many just different things that you know celebrate black culture. So I remember I was like probably four or five, right? And they had this like fundraiser with like different athletes, and they were signing stuff or whatever. And I remember my dad kept pushing me to go like meet this one guy. Now, at the time, Penny Hardaway was there, Elliot Perry was there, so he's in Memphis State, you know. Wow.

SPEAKER_00

He's from he played in Memphis. Elliot Perry, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I just saw Elliot Perry last week. Yeah. Wow, I never knew that. Check this out. So I'm literally um I'm going to go handle a booking. This is before the radio station gig. We'll talk about that at the end. But like, so but because my radio station that I play at is inside of a concourse. So you can literally walk by and see me playing on Mondays, which is hilarious. But anyway, I went to go talk to another guy there because I'm trying to get booked at a location in Memphis, right? And I'm coming down the steps and I see Elliot Perry. And he's with another brother. He's a cap, like when I say cap it out, I'm talking about he got the letterman jacket, the hat, the socks. Like he, I don't know if it was Founders Day or what, but this man was full on like all that. So I'm like, all right, bet. So I see Elliot Perry, and again, I hadn't seen him since this other story I told you, but he worked with one of my friends at the Urban Art Commission, and like she, well, and then there's another one, it's like called C-A-M, like this Contemporary Arts Memphis. So shout out to O'Reilly. And I saw him, I was like, look, man, I don't mean to interrupt you because I know you're having your lunch right now, but I just wanted to let you know, man, yo, you are a legend. And I just, you know, I'm giving him his props. And he's like, man, thanks, man. You know, he's dapping me up. And the brother sitting next to him was like, Man, you too young to catch Elliot Perry, man. I said, nigga, I went back and I watched highlights. Like, shut up, man. So, like, you know, we so yeah, Elliot Perry, cool as hell. Yeah, he's always been like super. Super dope.

SPEAKER_00

So yes, wow. Yeah, I never knew he played at Memphis State, man. He was right before Penny. He was literally directly before Penny. So I remember he was with the I think he was with the Phoenix Suns who used to rock them knee hot socks.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And then he played for the Grizzlies for a small amount of time. And I think he still does commentary for like the local um Grizzlies Fox Sports or like Bally, whatever it is now. Like, you know, he I think he still does that too. So Elliot Elliott's always dope. But nah, so look, so I see, you know, I meet all these guys, right? But my dad is put like this is 97, 98. Like, my dad's pushing me to go meet this old guy, right? And I'm not understanding why he wants me to meet this old guy so badly, right? So, you know, I get the baseball and he autographs and he's like, hey, there you go, young man. And you know, I just walk off, and I'm like, What's this old dude? You ready for this? Play it on me.

SPEAKER_03

Hank Aaron. What? Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Wow. Hank Aaron came through. My dad used to work for Diesel Recon, which is the Cummins diesel engine. So, like when you see that big C on the diesel engines, like he used to work for that factory, and they partner with like multiple organizations. They just like, hey, the kids can, you know, frolic and also meet these athletes. But again, I'm literally not even in kindergarten yet. So like I have no idea what I'm doing. Had I known who I was meeting, I would have definitely took care of more things like that. Yeah. But yeah, St. Karen, bro. I'm like, wow, like I could have, I have no idea where that baseball is. I really wish I kept on to that one. So yeah. And uh Penny Hardaway's cousin, Ruby, used to actually babysit me when I was a kid.

SPEAKER_00

No kidding. Boy, Memphis, it seemed like Memphis is truly a small world.

SPEAKER_02

It is, man. And then so check this out. About a year ago, I think I told the story, I'll show you where, but maybe not. A year ago, my mom goes to this funeral, right? And um, this guy walks in and he had on like some custom Nikes, right? And so my mom old school, man. And then he literally sits right next to her at this funeral. It's Penny Hardaway. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, that, and listen, that's not even the worst thing. So, like my mom, man, she has had the most Memphis jobs you can have. The only thing she hasn't worked for is FedEx. But she's worked for Opera Memphis, she's worked for Stax Records, she's worked for St. Jude, she's worked for the University of Memphis. So, University of Memphis days, I'm in high school. She comes home and tells me the story. She's like, hey, I met this guy, right? Well, I was at work today, and there was this guy walking around with Penny because Penny was, you know, visiting the campus and like, you know, during the lunch hall or whatever. And she's like, this big tall guy was just walking around with Penny, and everybody was going crazy. They were running up to him trying to get autographs. And I'm just like, who is this dude? And I'm like, and now keep in mind, I know my mom. Now this story well precedes the penny story. The penny story was last year. This is 2010. And I'm already getting frustrated because I know it's somebody crazy, because it's never anybody light with her. I'm like, who was it? Right? Just go ahead and lay it on me because I know it's about to be something stupid.

SPEAKER_03

What's the boy's name? I guess you know I don't care about sports like that. Big tall black guy. They said he played for Cleveland or something.

SPEAKER_02

I'm like, LeBron James? She's like, yeah, LeBron James. I was like, all right, man. Like, look, I I just can't I can't talk to you right now.

SPEAKER_03

I love you.

SPEAKER_02

I can't I do something crazy, but I can't talk to you right now, man. I I just I I literally went in my room and sat in silence because I'm like, bruh, she could have literally got this LeBron James autograph for me today. Because again, LeBron's one of my all-time favorites, and just didn't even know who he was. I'm like, all right, man. But let ElleBards walk in the room. She's tripping over everything to go get to this nigga, man. Let Ralph Tresman walk in the room. She's still crying like she ain't seen new edition 20 times. Like, yeah, man. Shout out to you, Mom, but man, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Missed opportunity. Man. Bees like that sometimes.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but shout out to my guy Mookie Wilson, man, you know. And um, you know, stopping through and being nice to kids. That's always dope when the people are nice to kids, because it's like you run into a few and they're not nice. And it's like, yeah, okay, I could have could have, you know, went. Have you ever had an experience where you met somebody and they weren't cool? You were just like, ah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It was it was one time. It was uh Cardinal Hall of Famer legend Bob Gibson. So there was a um, so me and my uncle went to Atlanta because there was this this sports memorabilia convention there, and Bob Gibson was like one of his all-time favorite players. So we drove there. He had an autograph set autograph session, but but by the time we got found parking and got there, his session had wrapped up and like he literally just got up from the table and he was I guess he was going to get lunch. And so um my uncle got me to go to uh approach Bob Gibson. It's it's almost similar to my um my uh Anthony Mason story. Yeah. Except um Bob Gibson wasn't drunk. I guess he was just hungry. And he just very uh he always struck me as a very uh honorary person. But during that era, I completely understand why. But um, I mean like the era in which he played, but this was gosh, this had to have been like early 90s, late 80s, somewhere during that time period. So anyway, he's leaves he gets up and leaves from his table to walk off. I run behind him like my uncle told me to when I tugged his pants. I was like, Mr. Gibson, my uncle is one of your favorite. He my uncle, like my uncle, he like you're one of my uncle's favorite players. Could could I possibly can I get an autograph to give to him? He just like get the fuck out of my face, kid. I'm I'm done. He's like, I'm not signing no more autographs today. Should have got here earlier. I'm like, you know what? I was like, you know what? You have a good day, sir.

SPEAKER_02

That reminds me of that fucking Shia LaBeouf story, which I think was a skit, but like the story he told about Mike Piazza, and he was like, yo, like, like Mike Piazza told me to go fuck off and like every he just wouldn't sign my autograph. So I make sure I sign an autograph for everybody. Like, that's funny. I think the only bad interaction that I've ever had, it wasn't even really bad. When I talked to him in a couple weeks, I'm gonna bring this up to see if he remembers his night. But we were at a club out here, it was New Year's Eve. This was 2011, right? Going in 2012. So the Concord has the Concords had re-released for the first time since the DMP pack, and you know it's Christmas J's because everybody lined up got these shoes on, and I'm like, dog, like, and y'all all decide to wear the shoes tonight, like dang. So we go in the club, and um it's this tall dude with dress, and he got a bucket hat on, and he's got like a couple women with him. Now, that's a couple people in this club this night, because it's New Year's, so you know, you know, clubs like to bring out a lot of people, so like, you know, like Lil Flip was in there randomly, like, what's up, Lil Flip? Like, Lil Flip was cool as hell, and like I done bumping a couple local, you know, local rappers, but this particular night, Kenfolk Keishon was there. Mr. I'm crispy. So crispy, you know, saying stun of shades on, all that, right? And he's got a lot of songs locally, right? Now he had like a whole entourage of like women with them. They're dressed in all white, right? So I guess he walked away, and like I was walking by them, and I was like, you know, excuse me, whatever, because man, I probably had like$10 to my name, and I got in the club for free. Like, you know, just being a young, dumb 18-year-old. Like, so I walked by and like one of them says, It's okay, like, how you doing? They start talking with me and all that. And then like I turn around and I can see him on the other side of the club, like, because you know, he got like these like like hazel eyes. Man is literally just staring at me like this, and I'm like, yo, whoa, like, hey, hey, I don't want no trouble, big dog. Like, what like look, man, I'm outnumbered regardless. It's just me, my dog, teasy breezy, like it's just a few people here. Like, we're gonna get packed out, bro. But like, and then like he walked by and he just looked at me again, and I'm like, and I just did that and just kept on going. I'm like, dog, like you came in with them. I would be a fool to try to take your women, dog. So relax. But yeah, everybody I've met though has always been pretty cool. But you get a few random people in there. It's like, all right, man. Like, the most nervous I ever was, though, I will say, you're familiar with Starlito, right? Yeah, oh, very much so. Okay. I'm literally shopping for some Levi jeans in Macy's, right? And I'm I'm in the clearance section too. Like, I'm 17, I'm in high school still, so I'm looking, and then I bump into somebody. I'm like, oh, my bad, bruh. And I look, and you know, he's tall, I'm like, oh, what's up, Lito? What's going on, man? Like, hey, when when Starlino's Way 3 dropped? He said, Man, nothing much, man. He said, I'm on my birthday, man, December 15th. I was like, all right, bruh, bet. And like my mama walks up now. Again, this is right after the LeBron James situation. And she walks up and she's like, Who was that? I was like, he's a rapper. She's like, I don't think I know him. I said, You know Birdman, right? She's like, Yeah, he signed a Birdman. Oh, okay. I thought he was a basketball player. I said, I bet you did. So, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Man, that's dope. So um, now we're gonna get into the five question segments. So the first and last question are the same question I ask every guest I have on here. Questions two through four, 100% random. So, question number one What were DJ Larry's go-to school lunch items? Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Um I don't have a shirt right here with me, but the shirts I just sold actually has it on it. Flatman Hot Cheetos had to have a honey bun of some sort, whether it was a big Texas, whether it was a cinnamon bun, something. I even take the pecan swirl boxes. You know what I'm saying? Like that's how we go with it. Cup of Jello. And I'm not gonna lie, I used to go crazy. I used to sell candy too. Um, I used to go crazy with the flat gas station, Jolly Rancher lollipops, man. Like, those are always my go-to's.

SPEAKER_00

Man, that's a solid list right there. Question number two What's your favorite restaurant in Memphis?

SPEAKER_02

And y'all should work with me, by the way. Soulfish cafe. Best catfish in the city, man. And they got good side options too. But that's that fish, you eat it, man. You you eat that fish, man. It's like a silent tear just rolls down your face, man. Like, that's how good it is. So, what's what's the go-to sides that you would recommend? I'm a fries guy with my fish, but I also like to freak it sometime and get like mac and cheese and like cabbage sometimes too. So, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Question number three.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_00

What's your least favorite song to play at parties when you're DJing?

SPEAKER_02

Nokia Drake, if asked. Hey, hey. There's much better Drake songs. I'll play Passion Fruit 37 times before I play Nokia. Okay. Uh, question number four. Where did you go the first time you flew? Jamaica. Actually, no, no, no, no. It was Denver, Colorado, because I had some family members that stayed in Colorado Springs. So we drove out there, and um, that was when I was eight years old. But right after that, I went to Jamaica. I've been to Jamaica like seven times. That was my mom's like go-to places, like when I was a kid, like for focusing. So that's where I picked up my love for reggae and reggae tone and stuff like that, because I'll always be out there and I would hear it. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Man, you I mean, just off the rip, like, second trip you're going to Jamaica, man. You I'm trying to get on your level. Hey man, God, God has a great way with blessings, brother. Let me tell you. Hey, you you ain't lying.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, sir.

SPEAKER_00

Then the last question. What was the last thing that really made you laugh?

SPEAKER_02

Like, laugh hard, hard? Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Are you familiar with the comedian Desi Banks? Yeah. Okay. So do you remember that trouble he got in a couple weeks ago? Uh-uh. Okay. So the long and short of it is Desi Banks started taking advertising money from this place called uh Masad, right? Masad is the Israeli central intelligence. Like it's their CIA, right? But it's because called Masad. So when I saw the story, Masad is so I called Winston and I go, bro, I don't know what's going on with Masad, bruh, but this nigga gotta be stopped. He's like, What do you mean, this nigga? I'm like, nah, this nigga Masad, bruh. Like, I this nigga's like the new bin Laden, bruh. Like, I ain't never heard this nigga before today, bro. This nigga's going crazy, bruh. He's like, Larry, Masad is not one person. I'm like, what you mean? They keep saying this nigga Masad, bruh. Like, I'm just going, I'm having my Daryl Strawberry moment with that, right? And uh yeah, he he's like, no, Masad is one person. And I have a homie that's Jewish, and I literally called him. I was like, look, bruh, I just want to let you know I did not know Masad was an agency. I thought this was just a terrible nigga, man. Like, I had no idea. So it was that, and then AJ on one of the postgames thought that the big pun and Tony Sunshine song make it to the top, you know, 100% that song. Yeah. He thought that Tony Sunshine singing that part was Mark Anthony and Paterico, like that's all, yeah. He thought it was Mark Anthony. So within the span of two weeks, we all had our Earl moment of like our Daryl Strawberry moment, pretty much. So yeah, man.

SPEAKER_00

Ah, that's wild, man. So um wrapping the show up, man. Talk about your uh your newly minted uh DJ gig, man. So uh yeah, share share with the audience your uh I break the fourth wall.

SPEAKER_02

I was late to this podcast. I was on Black People Time into this illustrious podcast because I just came from the radio station. So yeah, as of a couple weeks ago, I'm officially a radio DJ now. I've already done I do parties, I do bars, mixtapes, all kinds of stuff like that. But this is my first foray into radio, so this all came about because I submitted for it, and man, I just thought I wasn't gonna get it for the longest time. And then they hit me, they were like, You still want it? I'm like, Yeah, I still want it. They were like, When can you come up here in shadow? I was like, I'll come up 30 day, right? So I'm not gonna lie, man, it you know, overwhelming. Had to hit one knee, man, had to hit the Howard Hewitt, guy, give me one more chance, like tears flowing down, all types of stuff. Like, I was super emotional over this. And um, I go to the station. Now, when you hear the word shadow, you think you're gonna watch somebody. They're like, Oh, you didn't bring anything? I said, Okay, tell y'all what, hey, open your laptop up right now. Open his laptop up, grab the DJ controller in the studio, did an impromptu set right then and there, and they were like, All right, like you already had it, but we see how you get down, so you good to go. So, like the last two weeks have just been me playing stuff, and it's funny enough, I have the track list of what I played today actually up, and um it's actually hilarious. So, like, I don't play normal radio records like that you would think. So, like today, for example, I played Babyface Ray, I played some old young thug, I played What's Up by the Rich Kids, I end up playing you're gonna like this one. I played Gucci Mane Sports Center off of EA Sports Center into a couple of the homie songs, into this is what I call her off dedication to, into drunk dialing by currency and whiz, into you know, a couple currency records, into pennies by the cool kids, into fat raps by Big Sean. So I'm not just playing typical, you know, radio records, it's really like I'm playing what I want. And this week I was like, you know what? I feel like in my blog, I'm in my blog era bag right now, so let's get to it. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Dope, man. And I'm super proud of you for that too, man. Seriously.

SPEAKER_02

Thank you, man. I appreciate it, man. You know, it was times I had to take time away from show your work, and I will always worry, like, man, well, what am I gonna do? Like, you know, I'm just being overbearing, honestly, on Nelson and Winston. And it's like, dog, they've done these episodes just as much as you have. So let them cook. And when they're by themselves, they still cook. They even do better than me, like, sometimes. I ain't gonna lie to you. Like, so it's always good to see them do their thing, and and just always watching whether it's you, Donnie, AJ, Jamal, man, the reggae boys when they decide to podcast, obviously, R A O P, you know, shout out to the Black Announce Table, and so many homies that have podcasts. Ben, Ben Forte, you know what I'm saying? So many people that have podcasts that I don't get a chance to tell them I appreciate them. It's always cool just to listen to y'all because it keeps me on my toes. And be through podcasting with editing pods and stuff like that, that's helped me with editing music and getting back into the swing of things. So I know y'all are proud of me, but I appreciate y'all for getting me back in the swing of things, man. So yeah.
