Your emotions are your guidance system, and they let you know whether you are moving towards a life that is positive and fulfilling, or one that is negative and burdensome.
We are in control of our emotions. It is not our responsibility to control how others act or behave, but we must take control of how we react to others and situations. This is not to say it's easy to control our emotions, but it is worth the work to do so because being in control of whether you feel happy or sad is life changing.
