Oh, oh, this pastoa, baby du tie toa, siempre de bomba, oh, oh, this pastoa, baby du tie toa.
unknownBuenas noches, buenas noches, buenas noches, buenas noches, buenas noches.
SPEAKER_24No ves, no spares, no ven as baza, mas bien cambio, darte tranquilo, sashei. Ok, sashei. No promes, no purpos, ojo loco, no toques, no seas viejo, no seas tan serio. Esta de moda. No tomas drago, eres raro, no tomas photo.
Tú eres falsa, no eres fiel.
SPEAKER_01Yo no puedo amor, ni panorama, come, come, come.
Mammy soy yo, no soy yo, a botar mi perdí pimiento, ostra me gana los sentimientos, no mucho chopeando, eh, yo estoy contento.

SPEAKER_00And there we go. There's our mix for November, December 2024. And I am your DJ, your host, your curator, DJ Mike Cartel. Thank you so much for joining me on this episode. And um, how's it going, strangers? It's been a while, so I'm glad I'm back. I'm glad you're back, and thank you so much for still listening. Appreciate it. And uh yeah, just been uh super busy uh DJing, and I have to admit I did put my podcast to the side, and um, but I never for I never forget, it's always on the back of my mind, and um again it's something I enjoy doing. And for those of you just joining me for the first episode here, um this is El Sabor Latin Music Podcast, and what I do is I go back in time and I review every single release for a specific genre, and in this episode we're doing Latin pop and tropical, so Tropical encompasses bachata, merengue, salsa, what else, uh Mambo, and maybe sometimes punta. So, anyways, I for November, December uh 2024, I went through every single song that I could find and release and re-release, like a remix, um, even if it's uh they had an intro to it, maybe it's a redrum, um, even a remaster, you know, something that just came back out into the DJ market. Um, I l I listened to it, and if I decide I want to add it to my set, uh, because I'm not just doing a top ten just for the hell of it. These are records that I I'm actually adding to my DJ collection and playing. So yeah, I want to share that with you because I needed to come up with a method to um to really just hone in on my the the best records I'm downloading every month because as DJs we get inundated with music, whether it's through email, um which I do appreciate, you can always send me music to DJMikeCartel at gmail.com and um also um you know the the music that we look for through uh DJ pools like BPM Supreme, um DJ City and uh Beat Source, Beatport, all those and so yeah, you know, it's a lot. And uh the thing is when we download all this music, which uh let's see, for Land Pop, it could be over a hundred releases a month. You know, we're not gonna play a hundred new records. Uh we have to play the best of the best, and uh you know, a lot of us, myself included, we get caught up in playing the same songs over and over and over because it's easy. Um people enjoy it, they like to sing along, right? But you know, as a DJ, it's boring. Especially if you have like a uh a regular gig, like weekly, semi-weekly, whatever you're doing you end up doing like the same sets, or even if you're like I do a lot of private events, so I do weddings, quitinettas, birthday parties, all that stuff. And um and so yeah, um, you know, it again I'll get caught up playing the same songs, you know. And uh so anyway, I like to play fresh music because if I don't play fresh music, then why the hell am I doing this? This is why I'm a DJ. I like sharing music. What back in the days we'd call it breaking records, you know, playing music people never heard of, or a special remix, and um yeah, you know, um share music because I love it. And so this is what I do here on the show, and I hope you enjoy it. And then what I also do, I've as you can tell I put it in a mix. So again, that's also for selfish reasons. So when I do put it in a mix, I use those mixes. I don't do you know exactly as as it is in the uh mix you hear on the episode today. Um, you know, I'll take bits and pieces. That's how I do all my sets live. I have all these mixtapes I've created for my LSL Water Light Music Podcast and also for um I make mixes for gyms, trainers. Um you can find those on Fit Radio. Um it's an app you can download. Very cool. If you like to work out, you'll hear my high-energy mixes there. I do house music, EDM, uh, pop, and also a lot of Latin, you know, so yeah, check it out. Anyways, so yeah, I use all that stuff, um, you know, all those sets, all those mixtapes when I play live. So depending on the crowd, you know, I could play a little bit of this mixtape, a little bit of that mixtape, because you know what? I love transitions. I'm a DJ. Sorry, not sorry. When I go here, other DJs, you know, it's about song selection, yep. That's half of it, and the other half is transitions. And um I like a clean transition. You know, I I don't yeah, as you can tell I don't get too fancy with it. When I'm playing live, I do get a little fancy with it. You know, I like to use effects and stuff, but for a mixtape, I like to keep it clean. You know, um not a lot of scratching, you hardly hear me he I don't think you ever heard me scratch on these mixtapes, but in real life I scratch a little bit, but again, it's not that much. You know, I just kind of just playing around or may spice up a mix a bit here, but but it's very, very infrequent. And anyways, the reason why I'm bringing that up is because another reason I do this podcast is share my DJ knowledge. I've been a DJ since 2001. And so what are we at? Twenty twenty six oh twenty-five years. And it's not exactly twenty-five years. I took a break between twenty fourteen and twenty nineteen uh dealing with some stuff and uh mental health issues, you know, nothing wrong with that. I don't mean to just cover it up, but yeah, you know uh my pops passed away in twenty fourteen and devastated me. And so yeah, you know, uh everybody goes through stuff, and uh anyways, the way I share how it affected me as a DJ. Um I when I would hear music, uh I didn't really feel anything anymore. And when I and even when I was a little kid, the thing that attracted me to music was this crazy feeling I got when I'd hear um songs I really liked. Like I I don't know how to describe it, this energy I felt, you know, this feeling I wanted to dance, even though I I didn't know how to dance when I was a little kid, but just wanted to move and yeah, yeah, I don't know. I just I I just it was just like electricity almost. And so anyways, um I always got that feeling when I heard something like a good song. And um and that's what one of the reasons I wanted to be a DJ because uh I wanted to share all this the all the music I would find and share I I would share with my friends, I'd make mixtapes and stuff back in the days, um, with cassettes, yeah. And uh or CDRs and make their mix mixes like that, but not as a DJ, just you know, my hey, these are the ten hip hop records I found, check it out. And um and yeah, you know, I would I would do that. So, anyways, um when my dad passed away, um all those feelings went away. And even when I went and back and listened to music that I really enjoyed and loved, um because my first love is hip hop music, um, I felt nothing. It was almost like uh you're how do you say you're eating food and you and you don't taste anything. You know, it's like why why eat? And um yeah, it was hard, you know, and 'cause I thought I had lost my what my DJs call it is your your ear, you know, and that tells as a DJ that tells you what's a good song and what's a shitty song. And I thought I always had a really good ear. And one of my compliments I always got, because my transitions weren't always the best, you know. I mean, even when I I DJ started as vinyl, you know, with records and stuff and a turntable. Um but I always got compliments on my um song selections and reading the crowd, you know, knowing what songs to play when and for how long and and yeah, that went away. Um and I I didn't know if it was ever gonna come back, but it did. You know, uh of course they say what time heals all wounds, but it's also a family, and you know, I was grateful for um my friends back then and um and my my wife back then, you know, she was everybody was supporting me, you know, my s and my sister too, she went through it, so it was hard. But anyways, uh yeah you know, through just time it uh time I guess like I said again, time heals all wounds, but um so I came back in twenty nineteen, fast forward, and then I started again, and then right, we got hit with COVID in twenty twenty. I started doing streaming and a little bit, you know, and then my business started picking up in um twenty twenty three and here we are. And anyways, one of the issues I had was again, all this music and how do I organize it, um because of course I play the hits like I said for like the crowds and stuff, but I also want to play music for me. I want to play new music and the music that um really attracted me was Latin music. Even though I was a real, real big, big, big hip hop fan, um yeah, I threw Bad Bunny, I gave him uh all the credit in the world for me like diving head deep into Latin music and um when I heard his album Un Verano Cintia, like all the different genres he did, um yeah, it just got me interested and I wanted to hear more. And I was in I was always into reggaeton, um I like some cumbias, um, but not really, you know, I didn't really I wasn't really into that. But yeah, yeah, and after that I got obsessed and with Latin Trap, with um even Salsa, I never really dug salsa, but I started liking Salsa even before yes, Bad Bunny's last album. And then uh merengue, punta, uh my buddy Juan, he he he's the one that got me onto punta. And big shout out to Juan, what's up, brother? And then um and so yeah, everything else, you know, uh the cumbia, the the corridos came a little bit later, you know, of course. But um yeah, I'm obsessed. Love Latin music, and the thing is when I play out in live, I can't play all these this new music. Uh sometimes I just have to play little clips here and there, like a minute, maybe two minutes, but of course we want to hear hits, right? So this is my outlet. This is how I express myself, and again, um this big old long ass explanation of why I do it like as a mix is because you know, um I I think that's how I want to present the music, you know, and for other DJs to give you ideas how to do the transitions, and then also feedback you guys can give me like, hey man, that transition, you could have done it this way, would it sound tighter, you know, and cool. Uh love feedback, uh, you know, and so that's the only way to grow. And so yeah, it's kind of putting myself out there too, you know, and saying, hey, this is how I am as a DJ. And if you come see me live, or if you hire me, you live out here in LA, I'd be glad to go do your party too, and you know, hit me up. And so, yeah, just gives uh my clients a bit of taste of how I mix too, you know. So, yeah, that's what I've been doing. I'm back. Um, thank you so much for sticking with me. And um, I do appreciate all your support and as um and what I do uh at at the end of each mix is what you're listening to now, and I appreciate you listening. Is uh I just like to speak about the DJ world, um Latin music, and um and just kind of keep it with that. You know, I want to keep it positive, I want to give you guys an alternative to all the the craziness that's happening in the world. You know, you can go to the news outlets for that, you got your podcasters to do that. I don't do that, uh with all due respect, and um I'm in my lane, I do music, you know, and I want to share Latin music and the whole world of um of what we all the whole world of music that we have to offer to the world, if that makes sense. You know, like uh when Lat when Bad Bunny did the halftime show, man, that got to me. You know, when he was shouting all the countries and stuff, and um it just made me feel like um you know, maybe what I'm doing here too is is kind of doing that too and sharing with the the Latin culture that you know the what what Mexicans do, I'm Mexican, uh Mexican American, uh third generation. And um so yeah, it's also helping me get back into touch with my culture, sharing the music from El Salvador, Honduras, Venezuela, Colombia, you know, Panama, um shoot, I'm running a blink here, but uh yeah, Belize, um and so yeah, you know, Brazil, of course, uh Argentina. So just want to share the music because it's just so so special and I love it. And out here in LA I'm really lucky because I get to play it because we have all those types of people here, and uh I'm primarily hired as a Latin DJ. So yeah, when I play, I I play like this. Uh I'll play a little bit of salsa, merengue, cumia, um, ranchera, escorridos, and then I'll throw in a little bit of hip hop, house music, you know, some 90s pop, some 80s new wave. So I'm really lucky to live out here, you know, and uh living out here in LA again, that's what helped me get all exposed to those types of music. So yeah, still doing my thing out here. I've been DJing for a long time, and um, all you people out there that that are wondering if you should get into the world of DJing, I highly encourage you to do it. You know, uh I know there's a lot of memes out there making fun of us, you know, as DJs and stuff, and you know, some of some of us DJs deserve that, those critiques, because you know, it's kind of funny how people um white people do this sometimes, and then how do they act on on screen? And I don't know, maybe one day when I get on you can see me uh do my mixes, I'll be doing them on YouTube soon. I don't know, maybe you'll start cringing when you see me too. Because uh, you know, sometimes we get in that that zone when we're mixing, and I don't know what happens to our faces. I don't know. And then we start twisting knobs because we're nervous and we don't know what the fuck to do with our hands. Because that's what we do. You know, when you see DJs just twisting knobs, you're like, why are they doing it? I don't I don't hear any change in music. Okay, he's spinning the platter. I don't I don't hear anything, but what what it why are they do because we're nervous and we got two minutes just to fucking sit there and wait to for the next transition, so we we gotta do something. You know, and we can dance, but there's only so many you know, two-step variations we can do because most of us just kind of do basic two-step, you know. I dance too when I DJ, but come on now. So yeah, that's a little DJ secret. Why you why are they always twisting knobs and doing, you know, dumb shit that doesn't you know you can't hear on the mix because we're nervous. A lot of us are introverts, believe it or not. Isn't that weird? I know, I don't know why it's it's weird, but a lot of us are. So when I meet other DJs, I mean it's it's awkward as fuck too, sometimes, you know. I I'm I'm I'm more of I think an introvert extrovert now because I've been doing it for so long, and also my real job in real life. Um I do presentations, I do trainings, I have to give speeches, so I got used to that. You know, and um and thankfully I I took a speech class. I mentioned this in my other podcast episodes with um Annette Cardona. She's a um a great actress, she's a pioneer, uh Latina actress out here in Los Angeles. Um she was in the movie Greece, it's cha-cha. And uh I owe her a lot, you know. Um she's definitely one of my my the key people in my life that um changed everything for me and uh really brought me out of my shell. So I really have a lot of love for her. And um I'm gonna keep talking about her because I want everybody to know about her. Um she was an amazing woman, you know, and um yeah, you know, I a lot of stuff I've learned from her I share with you guys. And um yeah, and uh unfortunately she's passed away, but I I want her to her legacy to live on because she was more than just an actress, she was uh she was a um yeah, she's a big inspiration for for me and uh for a lot of people at at Cal State Northridge where she taught. So yeah, you know, and um I want to do what I can I want to do what uh how do you say what I guess what I can do to help DJs uh come up and you guys come up, give you guys some courage to go out and buy that controller or you know, download that DJ software and you're just wondering uh what the fuck am I gonna do with this? Um you can start by making a mixtape. Uh you can just do it when you're bored, you know, and have some fun, because it is fun. I I like playing, I I have a lot of fun doing it. I wouldn't keep doing it. Um you can make some money on the side as a side hustle, that's what I do. Um I have other friends that do it as a full-time business and I make a lot of money, you know. Um, but it just depends what you want to do with it, you know. And I'm not saying like, oh, if I go full time I'll make a lot of money, but um it's a lot of work too when you go full time as a DJ. And no, I'm not talking about fucking uh being diplo, you know, that's a whole other thing. I'm I'm talking about being a working DJ and um doing these high-end events, these high-end weddings, quintinetta, stuff like that, because yeah, that's the way to survive as a DJ if you want to do it full time is you gotta go in and you gotta have a shitload of equipment, um, all these photo booths and sparklers and all that, but I don't do that. You know, I'm more of just I have as a side hustle, and if you want to know about my business, I'll talk about that later um in other episodes. But yeah, you know, like I said, I do weddings, kinchin yetas. I say I'm a DJ for the middle class, you know, and if you want something big, you know, or you got I don't know, five hundred guests and you're in a high-end hotel, then I got a buddy for that. You know, but um, but yeah. So anyway, so that's what I do. I'm a DJ, and um I hope uh I inspire you guys to finally make that move and uh you guys be a DJ and you can share your music with me, you know, your mixes, because I want to learn. You know, I'm always listening to other DJs, I'm a big fan of DJs, and if you ever see me out at a bar or even a club, ugh, I don't like going clubs, but I will because of the DJ, because I want to hear a set, you know, and um so yeah, let me know. I'm at DJMikeCartel at gmail.com. You can find me on Instagram too, Instagram.com slash DJ Mike Cartel. Um if you Google me, all my shit should pop out, DJ Mike Cartel. There's I'll be honest with you, there's not much there. My podcasts are there, and it's the audio, and then YouTube hella restricts it. So um we're gonna figure some stuff out. You know, and you're gonna see me, my actual face, and me actually mixing these um podcast episodes, and also I got some interviews coming up. Um be interviewing um Sergio Villanueva coming up, and so you'll be hearing from him and also some other my favorite BPM Supreme uh remixers, and not just from BPM Supreme, but uh I really want to feature other DJs on here, you know, and um yeah, and uh hope he introduces you to their stuff because uh that's what I hear on that's what I play on my sets, and that's what I have here on my podcast, anyways. Alright, guys, so let's wrap it up for today. Uh thank you so much for listening, and again, I am DJ Mike Cartel. You're listening to El Sabor Latin Music Podcast, and I'll catch you on the next episode. Peace.
