Cold Open And Halloween Banter
SPEAKER_04In a world where everything is unscripted, this is roasty, toasty, toasty.
SPEAKER_01Hello.
SPEAKER_04Hello.
SPEAKER_01What do you think?
SPEAKER_04Uh I think it's good.
SPEAKER_01Good. Everything is good?
SPEAKER_04Everything's good. So let's start this thing.
SPEAKER_01I think it's your turn.
SPEAKER_04I think so too.
SPEAKER_01Would you like to open this up?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Let's open it up.
SPEAKER_01You open it up.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because I am the only one who can. Because I'm the only one with a can.
SPEAKER_02Hmm. I water.
SPEAKER_04I didn't hear have. So I water. I'm water. Okay. Uh Hello and welcome to Roasty Toasty Ghosty. This is the shouldn't this be like the Halloween episode?
SPEAKER_01Technically you would think so. Yeah. Next week could also be. Yeah. But this is this week, uh this is Halloween week.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01In which Halloween happens on Friday.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Maybe sh shouldn't the the second part be Halloween in that? Well, isn't Quicksand kind of Yeah, it's kind of scary. It's terrifying. Yeah, that's true. It is. So scary. Yeah. I'm next year I'm gonna dress up as Quicksand.
SPEAKER_01Quick sand. Yeah. You're just like a pile of sand. And then you just fall to the ground, I guess.
SPEAKER_04And then people can sink in me.
SPEAKER_01You wish. You wish.
SPEAKER_04Anyway, um, my name is Matthias.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Lauren.
SPEAKER_04And we are gonna be your best friends for an hour or so.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. This is the podcast in which you'll learn absolutely nothing at all.
SPEAKER_04Nothing at all.
SPEAKER_01Nothing at all. That's it.
SPEAKER_04And that's how it's supposed to be, I think.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Or I mean you may learn something, but it's not right. Or sometimes.
SPEAKER_01Maybe.
SPEAKER_04Sometimes not.
SPEAKER_01You might have to go Google search something.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, sometimes we we be lucky and actually teach people something right.
SPEAKER_01We may even learn things today.
SPEAKER_04Maybe. I'm the hostie.
SPEAKER_01You're the hostie. Yeah. And I'm the ghostie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_01I'm doing good. How are you doing?
SPEAKER_04I'm also doing good.
SPEAKER_01Good. Yeah. Alright.
SPEAKER_04Alright. Uh so what? Okay.
SPEAKER_01If we're gonna talk about our week, we have to start. Well, we talked about Saturday, right?
SPEAKER_04A little bit.
Meet The Hosts And Weekly Recap
SPEAKER_01We went we didn't go live on Saturday.
SPEAKER_04No, no, we didn't.
SPEAKER_01No, we recorded on Saturday.
SPEAKER_04Yes, we did.
SPEAKER_01So we start on Sunday.
SPEAKER_04But I also wanna say, because I didn't say that last episode, that I went to see my friend, a farmer farmer. The farmer? A farmer colleague? No, a former colleague. He's doing like uh film stuff nowadays. So I went to see his short film at cinema in a nearby city. His short film was good. The other ones were questionable.
SPEAKER_01Wait.
SPEAKER_04They were weird. Some of them were weird.
SPEAKER_01Would you say they were questionable?
SPEAKER_04Some people would say that. Questionable. If they can say that.
SPEAKER_00They probably would say that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. The people who can say that would say that.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_04I say they weird. Because I can say that. Yeah. Yes. The first film was so weird. It was about toothbrushes making love. Uh-huh. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Interesting.
SPEAKER_04And the It's really weird. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like I I'm curious, but I'm not so curio curio curious curious that I'm gonna like look it up.
SPEAKER_04No, okay. I might link it to you if I ever find it. Oh god.
SPEAKER_03Alright.
SPEAKER_04Maybe. I don't know. We'll see. There were like one uh film about uh a guy taking pictures of like cave drawings or wasn't it like a PowerPoint presentation? Yeah, yeah, it was just like a PowerPoint presentation. Um with music and uh him just taking pictures. He also had captions. He explained what they meant and stuff like that. It was kind of boring, I have to say. And then the my friend's film was one of the best ones. It was about a man and a dog in the snow. The man tried to make a fire and it's based on uh a novella of Jack London to make a fire or something.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04Something like that. And then the last one was just called Sofa. And it was about a couple who bought a sofa and they didn't have a car, so it was a Norwegian film by the way. And uh they uh carried that sofa to their apartment, and it was a really long way, and it's like they're the entirety of a relationship in that journey home.
SPEAKER_01From beginning to end.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It was interesting. So those were the films. Alright. And that was and then we recorded.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04So that was Saturday and then Sunday happened.
SPEAKER_01On Sunday, I don't think I did that much. I edited and I brought my daughter to gymnastics and went grocery shopping and stuff.
SPEAKER_04Okay. I edited, I video edited. I did the um podcast editing during the night. During the night.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because you were done before me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then on Monday, I had ordered a whole bunch of IKEA stuff and had it delivered into my apartment. So Monday I spent putting a bed together and a desk together for my daughter. And she got a new uh lamp as well. So I spent like the entire day working on that. You came and visited me for like it felt like ten minutes and then you left.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I I looked at you while you were working. I think it was longer than ten minutes.
SPEAKER_01It probably was, but it felt like it to me because I was busy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, uh but it's like uh I have to go to work since I was working evenings this week. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Tuesday I had Swedish class. So I went there and I had a speech. I made a PowerPoint presentation. Not about cavemen, but it was a more important subject. I talked about how kids' TV shows can teach adults lessons. It's like seeing things from a different perspective in a way. Okay, so the thing is that I made the majority of this PowerPoint the night before. I had a paper I had to fill out, but the bunny stole it and chewed up like most of the edges. So I had to take a picture of it and like write on like digitally. Write on the paper digitally because I had to send it over email anyway. So I had to do that or else I couldn't participate in this presentation.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Because it's a final project. So I did that. I did my PowerPoint, I did my presentation on Tuesday, and I thought it went pretty well. I felt like I was doing a good job.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I didn't follow directions apparently, because we were only supposed to take like five to seven minutes.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01I think. And I took 15.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you doubled and then some.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And my teacher was like, How long did it take for you when you were practicing this? I was like, I didn't do that. I didn't practice this. She's like, I can tell because it took you 15 minutes.
SPEAKER_03Oh.
SPEAKER_01I was like, oh. I mean, I I felt like I was up there for a while, but not that long. Because you know, when you're up in front of people, it feels like time kind of like shifts in a way. It's like when I'm work the furniture putting it together, and you're standing there for longer than 10 minutes, but it feels like it's only 10 minutes. I felt like I was up there for like the amount of time I'm supposed to, but it was a lot longer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, I I didn't feel great after that. And it's like there's a few parts I could have cut out. Knowing me, and I like to cut things out.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_01I like to take out the good parts.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, some of the best parts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I didn't do that.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_01So that kind of sucked. But it was just like one point out of the three points, I think. Okay. Uh I'm sure the rest went well. But I went home and my life partner built a new desk for me that also came with the IKEA shipment. And we got a new lamp in here.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I It's too bright. It's bright in here and it's redecorated. And yeah. The office studio area is looking pretty good, I think.
SPEAKER_04It's too bright though.
SPEAKER_01You think so?
SPEAKER_04No. Oh, it's it's good. Okay. No one has died from too much brightness.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna beg to differ.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, probably.
Train Mishap And Protein Dinner
SPEAKER_01There's been people who got too close to the sun. Uh huh. And I think it was too bright for them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Icarus.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04I I don't know if he wasn't uh a real person.
SPEAKER_01Oh. So the I'm not familiar with this story.
SPEAKER_04Okay, cool. No. It's okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well. Maybe you can tell me the story.
SPEAKER_04Maybe.
SPEAKER_01I I don't Tell me the history of Icarus.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01Go.
SPEAKER_04Now? No. Okay, it was a dude uh who had wings. I think it was his father who told him uh not to fly too close to the sun. But then Icarus was like, uh, I don't really care what you say, Dad. So then he flew too close to the sun and burned his wings and fell down and died. The end.
SPEAKER_01He didn't end up in Sydney, Australia, and his dad had to swim across the ocean to find him.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that that also happened. Okay.
SPEAKER_01After he burned to a crisp and died, he landed in Australia. Yeah. And his dad had to find his body. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_04For some reason the rock was there.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. He is Australia, I think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We did do the history of Australia.
SPEAKER_04That's true. And uh Hugh Jackman also was there.
SPEAKER_01Was he?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, because he's from Australia.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. He is Australian. So he also has to be there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Mad Max showed up.
SPEAKER_01Uh I guess. Um Mel Gibson. They just had a party with this corpse.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And so from the sky. Yeah, exactly. So the dad was like, uh, can you stop doing that to my son?
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04Because they did stuff with the corpse.
SPEAKER_01Why?
SPEAKER_04What?
SPEAKER_01Why? Why what did they do with the corpse?
SPEAKER_04They danced with the corpse.
SPEAKER_01They danced with it. Okay.
SPEAKER_04What were you thinking?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. You just said that they did things with the corpse. What am I supposed to think?
SPEAKER_04Stop dancing with my dead son. That's what the dad said.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04He flew too close to the sun and died. Sun sun.
SPEAKER_01How did they respond to that?
SPEAKER_04They're like, okay.
SPEAKER_01And they stopped. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Except for Hugh Jackman, because he kept dancing. Yeah, and singing. Mm-hmm. Because he likes to do that.
SPEAKER_01He turned it into a musical. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Yes, he did. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Alright.
SPEAKER_04That's what happened.
SPEAKER_01Interesting.
SPEAKER_04Few people know it.
SPEAKER_01Guess so.
SPEAKER_04The dad eventually talked Hugh Jackman into, you know, stop dancing with his dead son's corpse. Mm-hmm. So he got his dead son's corpse back and then he swam home.
SPEAKER_01With the corpse.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. As a floating device.
SPEAKER_01Alright. Interesting. But there's like no air left in the lungs, so how does it float?
SPEAKER_04He tied uh the corpse up to a log.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_04So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like a door.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah. Like a door. And they floated away. Log door. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then Except for the corpse because it it drowned in the ocean.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. The dead guy drowned.
SPEAKER_01I think so.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01No were they waiting for like lifeboats?
SPEAKER_04Uh I think so. Uh the the problem was that he was a corpse, so he kind of He pieced out.
SPEAKER_01He he just he disappeared.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Reactions
SPEAKER_04Yeah, he uh dropped some pieces here and there.
SPEAKER_01He pieced out.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, he uh he broke into pieces. Yeah. And he floated away. All of him. Yeah. You know what? I bet there was enough space on that door for two people. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But you know.
SPEAKER_01Only the dad was necessary to say it because the other one's already dead. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_04But Kate Twinslet was also on the She had to take the door.
SPEAKER_01So both of them the dad and uh the son were hanging on to the door. Yeah. And she's like, there's only enough space for me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, sorry. Sorry, guys.
SPEAKER_01And they both pieced out and drowned in the ocean.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Okay, so she couldn't be bothered to share.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no. Okay.
SPEAKER_04So the end.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, that was Tuesday. I also went to a meeting that evening for gymnastics club. Okay. Whatever. I don't know. It wa it was kind of boring, but I had to go because I was representing two uh clubs. The gymnastics and my spinning. So yeah, I did that. I got FICA. So I was like, whatever, it's fine. Yeah. That was Tuesday.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yesterday was Wednesday.
SPEAKER_01That's true. You can talk now if you want.
SPEAKER_04Yes, I can talk. We went and had FICA yesterday.
SPEAKER_01You met me at the cafe. Yes. And I had bought us drinks.
SPEAKER_04Yes. And then when I got there, I bought us something to eat.
SPEAKER_01Yes. And so yeah, we sat and we talked for a bit. Then we took the bus.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Then we saw my niece.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh yeah, while we were at the cafe, she walked by. Yeah. I walked with you to work.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Yes, you did. We took a bus, walked to my workplace. We talked a little bit and then you left. I did. And missed the train.
SPEAKER_01You know what? I was on the sign that the train usually is on when I go to my destination. Yeah. Because I was going to work. My my work.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so I'm standing there and I'm waiting, and the train shows up on the other side of the tracks.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so which side were you on?
SPEAKER_01Or was I wrong the whole time?
SPEAKER_04I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Because I feel like when I go back home, I take the one that's closest to your work.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Right? And then on the other side, you can go to my work.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It was the opposite this time.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01They showed up on the one closest to your work, and I was on the other side. And so I was like, uh, okay. So I started, you know, kind of jogging to cross the road or the railroad, and the the the road blockers came down.
SPEAKER_04Boom booms.
SPEAKER_01The boom booms came down.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I was like, oh my god. I mean, like, I s I still could have gone under the I mean you're not supposed to go under. But I I could have.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. But yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then I was like, well, that was that. I texted my boss and was like all frustrated. I was like, I'm gonna be like ten minutes late because now I have to take the bus. And like I had everything planned out. I was going to pre-order dinner. So that dinner was waiting for me when I got, you know, near work and I was gonna eat a good meal before working. And that just didn't happen because I didn't have time. So I went over to to the candy store.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01While I was waiting for the bus.
SPEAKER_04That's where they have the good nutritious food.
Night At The Museum 3: What Worked And Didn’t
SPEAKER_01You know what? The worst thing is that they used to have like a a kiosk where they had like warm food, like just like hot dogs or sandwich or something. They don't even have that anymore. It's gone.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I had to settle with a protein bar and I got a protein shake and an energy drink.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I got my protein. Yeah. And then I didn't feel very good after that.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01I wonder why. Because it's not actual food, it's just protein and sugar, and I had a stomach ache.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Uh it's so weird uh about the train, by the way.
SPEAKER_01I was so frustrated.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, I get it. Uh the thing about uh the train is that I took the train on Tuesday and I got off at the side of You're supposed to. Yeah, the road side.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So that's stupid because it is really stupid.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Anyway. I went to work. You did. And I worked. And we got out on time, so I didn't have to uh wait an hour for a bus home. That was nice.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that was good. And uh today is Thursday.
SPEAKER_01Thursday.
SPEAKER_04Weird.
SPEAKER_01It's October 23rd.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01And we watched movies. We did. Which is strange because it's Thursday. We usually do this on Fridays.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And plus it's daytime. So it's like complete opposite. Everything is opposite day.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. We're doing this because I have finals tomorrow in Swedish, which is gonna take up like half the day. So I won't be able to do much tomorrow. And you're working the evening, so I'm busy during the day, you're busy in the evening.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01We did watch movies.
SPEAKER_04We did.
SPEAKER_01Would you like a movie on?
SPEAKER_04Let's movie on.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Today we watched Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Night at the Museum 3, Secret of the Tomb, Battle of the Smithsonian. Which is what I wanted to say. Yeah. But I didn't say it.
SPEAKER_04That was last week.
SPEAKER_01Until now. I said it this time.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna tell you about Mad Max 3.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Or please do Thunderdome.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Mad Max of the Thunderdome. Or something. Um, anyway. This is a movie with Mel Gibson. Mel Gibson and Tina Turner. Yeah. And she is his aunt. Her name is Auntie. Auntie Destiny? Yeah. Monster.
SPEAKER_04Not Auntie Monster.
SPEAKER_01Auntie et et ethnicity? Auntie, what's her name?
SPEAKER_04Uh I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Is that in the credits? Yeah. They never said it during the.
SPEAKER_04No, they just called her Auntie.
SPEAKER_01Auntie. They're making energy out of pig poop. Yeah. And there's jungle kids and a lot of chanting. And a desert and quicksand. Yes. And a horse that drowned in quicksand, which was kind of sad. I won't think they killed any kids this time though. No. It was just the horse.
SPEAKER_04They didn't kill any kids last week either, right? Just a dog.
SPEAKER_01Uh it was a close call. Yeah. A kid almost dying. He survived. And then he grew up and became a narrator.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's what he did with his life.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. What do you want to be when you grow up?
SPEAKER_01Narrator.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And that's what I got out of this movie. What did you think about this movie? Also, you can fill in my blanks and correct me as much as you want.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, I think you nailed it.
SPEAKER_00That was the plot.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Quicksand and Jungle Kids and Chanting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Dead Horse.
SPEAKER_00And Tina Turner.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um.
SPEAKER_00And also uh, that is the plot.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Also a little person.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, there was a little guy and a big guy. It was the same guy from the Goonies. Was it? You know, looked just like him.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I don't think it was, but What's his name?
SPEAKER_01What's the character's name in the Goonies?
SPEAKER_04Sloth.
SPEAKER_01Ah. Yeah. Sloth was in this movie.
SPEAKER_04Mad Max and Sloth.
SPEAKER_01Anyway, go ahead.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, anyway. I don't mind this movie. I think it's pretty good actually. It has some good action. The character Max is like a good person in this one. He he did things for good in the other ones, but this one he feels more like a sympathetic person. Yeah. That's how I feel. So yeah, I kinda like this one actually. What did you think about it?
Part Two Begins: The Quicksand Connection
SPEAKER_01I think I enjoyed this one more than the other two. Despite the fact that I still have no idea what's going on.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_01And there is way too much chanting. Yeah, I mean I'm sorry. I'm interrupting you.
SPEAKER_04No, I'm interrupting you. It's my turn. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01The the part when the jungle kids were just repeating uh Mel Gibson, it was just annoying. They needed to stop.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I kind of got a little bit of hook wibe vibe.
SPEAKER_00Hook vibe?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. You know, with the kids, him taking care of the kids, you know, uh being a part of the kids with the kids there. So in a way, it kind of felt a little bit like hook. I never thought about that before, but I haven't seen this movie many I think I've only seen it like once.
SPEAKER_01But yeah Yeah, I was wondering because you um you started laughing a lot to that one part, and I was thinking, like, haven't you seen this before? I uh it was um the guy, oh, he was gonna count to three and remove like what, a spear or an arrow or something from the guy? What happened to two?
What Quicksand Really Is
SPEAKER_04In that voice too. Yeah. Um no, uh it it was funny. The thing is, uh, even if I had remembered that from the first time, I I still think I would have left because it's a funny scene. Yeah. I do like that they incorporated some comedy into these more.
SPEAKER_01Just a little bit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, not much.
SPEAKER_01That was like it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Maybe a little bit more. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think so. But yeah, I don't hate this movie.
SPEAKER_01Okay. But this was the last one?
SPEAKER_04With Mel Gibson, yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04The last one we're gonna see.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04For now at least. Okay, do you have anything else to say about this movie?
SPEAKER_01Are you gonna make me re-watch any of these? No. Okay. Probably. I have it on recording now, so Probably not. You can't do it. No, I think that's all.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Next.
SPEAKER_04Next movie was Night at the Museum 3. Secret of the Tomb.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So that movie is about It's the third chapter of the Night at the Museum movies. Um the tablet. The tablet is weird. Yeah, it's sick. It's uh it gets it gets like green stuff on it and it looks weird.
SPEAKER_01And starts corroding.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So Larry or Ben Stiller uh has to uh find out what that's all about. Oh, by the way, this movie stars Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Rami Malik Malik, Malik? Something like that. One of 'em. Yeah. Uh and basically all the guys from the first guys and girls from the first movie.
SPEAKER_01Plus, um, yeah, we still have Ricky Dravaze, and then we have Rebel Wilson.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the uh the new people in this one are Rebel Wilson, Sir Ben Kingsley, Hugh Jackman.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, he shows up for a minute.
SPEAKER_04Guest appearance, other people probably. I don't Maybe.
SPEAKER_01There might be another person in this movie.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, probably. Uh and oh yeah, Ben Triceratops. Oh yeah. Ben Stiller plays two people in this. He also plays a caveman. Anyhow, yeah, they have to find out how to fix the green stuff on the tablet, so they go to London.
SPEAKER_01What's in London?
SPEAKER_04Sir Ben Kingsley. Okay. Yeah, the they need to find uh Achman Ra's dad who knows the secret of the tomb. Yeah. Yeah, that's that's it, I guess. Oh, and yeah, and uh the old guys from the first movie is also in this movie. Oh yeah. Dick Van Dyke and Mickie Rooney and Bill Cobbs.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and unfortunately this was also Mickey Rooney's last movie. Yeah, along with Robin Williams. Which is really sad.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Two great actors. Yeah. Uh what did you think about this movie?
Myths, Physics, And How To Escape
SPEAKER_01I you know what? When the movie started, I was trying to remember if I had even seen this one before. Because I I didn't really remember the beginning so well. But when Rebel Wilson came around, then I was like, I have seen this. Okay. I remember her in this movie. So if I've seen this before, which I definitely have, um I've only seen it like once. Okay. So I didn't really remember anything. Except for her. Yeah. Because I like her. She's funny. Um, but I did enjoy this movie. Now to say if I enjoyed it more or less than the last one, I don't really know. Okay. For some reason I'm still thinking that the last one was better than this one. Even though this one was like also a little bit bigger and more adventure, I guess. Yeah. I don't know. I like them all. I don't know if I even have a favorite. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean the first one will always be special just because it's the first one. Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. What would you say?
SPEAKER_04I would say that this is definitely my least favorite of these.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So we're kind of on the same boat. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_04I didn't like this one as much, but I'm not sure why. I think the effects don't hold up as well as the other ones. I don't know why. It gets too much. And I I'm not too big fan of the bad guy in this one, the night guy.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. I just didn't like this one as much. Although I think it's nice to see Robin Williams' like last performance. Live action performance. Um although you could you could see he lost weight in this. Yeah. You you could see he he wasn't the same as in the first two. Yeah. And that kind of made make me sad too. Yeah. See that big of a difference. And also the they replaced the son. I liked the first actor who played the book. He was a different guy. Yeah. Okay. I'm sorry to that guy, new guy, but I didn't like him as much. Although I have seen him in at least one other movie that I quite enjoyed his acting. So it's not really against him. It's it's uh the newest vacation movie. Okay, okay. I just wanted the original actor to reprise his role.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But for some reason he didn't. It's an okay movie. It's good for what it is, but uh I absolutely like the other ones better.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Alright then.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't think I have anything else to say. No. It feels pretty good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think so too.
SPEAKER_01We'll be moving on to other movies next week. Yes. Yeah. We will. Halloween movies. Yeah. Alright. Or something. Or something. Something Halloween y. Yeah. Okay. Alright, then let's take a break. Let's so you can leave and then come back in like 10 seconds. Oh yeah. And we will continue the episode in the second part. It'll be the quickest day transition ever from a Thursday to a Friday. Ready? Yes. You want to do that? Okay. Alright, we'll be right back. Yes. Bye. Bye. Alright, let's get into this second half. Today is uh Friday. It is. And yesterday we watched movies.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01Would you like to talk about the movies we watched yesterday?
SPEAKER_04We did that yesterday.
SPEAKER_01I know we did that yesterday. We talked about it and now we're gonna talk some more.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01There was something that was similar between the two of them.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_01It is true. I said it and it was true. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um sand.
SPEAKER_01Sand.
SPEAKER_04The end.
SPEAKER_01There was there was quicksand in both of them. And not slow sand.
SPEAKER_04No. No. I don't know what that is.
SPEAKER_01It's sand.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah, quicksand.
SPEAKER_01Quicksand. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Sand just sinking in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh as or when we were younger, we all thought that quicksand was gonna be a bigger problem than it actually ended up being.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01At least for us. Maybe it is a problem for some people.
SPEAKER_04Maybe. But I don't know. I never been in it.
SPEAKER_01I've never encountered quicksand.
SPEAKER_04No.
Where Quicksand Occurs And Real Risks
SPEAKER_01So today we're gonna we're gonna teach each other. Or I'm gonna teach you.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Really. Actually, open eyes is going to teach us about quicksand.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna do should we do a deep dive?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we can do deep dive.
SPEAKER_01Should we go submarine deeps?
SPEAKER_04I maybe.
SPEAKER_01Into the sand?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, let's dive into the sand. The quicksand.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So deep dive n dive.
SPEAKER_04Into quicksand.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, AI. Why don't you just drown yourself in quicksand? On the topic, okay, of quicksand. Wickedness. No, quicksand. Please. Uh can we be serious for a second?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
unknownCome on.
SPEAKER_00AI. Stop joking.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Don't you know what kind of podcast this is? This is a serious podcast.
SPEAKER_01Very serious.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Let's do a deep dive into quicksand. So, first of all, let's do a basic point here. What is quicksand? Uh quicksand isn't a special kind of sand, it's ordinary sand that becomes saturated with water, creating a liquefied soil that loses its strength and can't support weight properly. Did you get anything?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so there's water in the desert apparently.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, in the sand.
SPEAKER_01In the sand. It's taking up all the water.
SPEAKER_04Let me drink that sand.
SPEAKER_01Gross. So yeah, it becomes soil.
SPEAKER_04So, can I ask you a question?
SPEAKER_01I'd rather you didn't. Okay. What what's your question?
SPEAKER_04Do you remember when you first heard about quicksand?
SPEAKER_01Or we all saw quicksand in cartoons. Didn't we?
SPEAKER_04Maybe we did. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01What do you know? What what do you know?
SPEAKER_04What do I know?
SPEAKER_01I'm getting defensive.
SPEAKER_00What about it? Leave me alone.
SPEAKER_04We all did.
SPEAKER_00It's a fact. Everyone knows this. It's cartoons.
SPEAKER_04Uh the first time I heard about it was one of my earliest memories uh from um it was a it wasn't a cartoon, but it was a kid's show about a lady getting like stuck in quicksand, and I'm like, and it was like a cliffhanger for that show. And I was so worried about her. What's gonna happen to her?
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_04But uh I I because that's like the only memory I have that she was stuck in it. I I'm sure she survived that she got rescued or if she you know uh You never found out. Probably did, but I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_01Okay. We're gonna find out where you uh go when you sink into quicksand. Okay?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Not right now.
SPEAKER_04No, okay.
SPEAKER_01The physics of quicksand. I sound tired. Uh quicksand.
SPEAKER_04Either you're tired or you're drugged.
SPEAKER_01I don't think one of those is true. No. Um which one is up to speculation.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. People can decide.
SPEAKER_01Science. Quicksand is a non-Newtonian fluid, meaning its viscosity or its thickness changes under stress. So it's stressed sand. Stress sand.
SPEAKER_04Should go to a therapist. Sand therapist.
SPEAKER_01Sand needs therapy. It's stressed. So there's two key physical properties. One, liquefaction. Yes. When the sand is shaken or disturbed.
SPEAKER_00It still needs therapy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Kind of sound like a it's trauma traumatized. Yeah, and uh like uh uh James Bond drink. Shaken, not stirred.
SPEAKER_00It's shaken shaken, not disturbed.
SPEAKER_04James Bond's desert drink.
SPEAKER_00Shaken, not disturbed. The grain structure loosens and water pressure increases. The mixture behaves like a fluid instead of a solid. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Also, sheer thinning behavior. When force is applied, like trying to pull your leg out quickly, it behaves more like a solid. Resistance increases. When you move slowly, it behaves more like a liquid, easier to escape. So the harder you struggle, the more you sink. It's like ooblong, oohong, whatever. Ooh block. What is it called? It's the thing. You can like punch it and it becomes a solid. Okay, yes. And then if you just put your hand in it, it's like water.
SPEAKER_04Okay, yeah. I I've seen that. I did not hear.
SPEAKER_01Have you touched it?
SPEAKER_04No. I did not know that that was the name for it.
SPEAKER_01I could be wrong.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Ooh blog.
SPEAKER_04That sounds like a kid's show.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It should be.
SPEAKER_04This episode is more about kids' shows than I expected it to be.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's um this is a kid's show in which uh the harder you struggle, the more you sink.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00The more difficult the struggles become. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Sounds like a great kid's show.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. The worse it gets. When things are calm, then everything's good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Anyway.
SPEAKER_04It's a show for kids to calm down.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, maybe.
SPEAKER_01But the thing is that no one ever calms down. So it's just chaos. Yeah. Constant chaos. It's like trying to film the gymnastics groups. Yeah. It's just constant chaos. Especially when we lift the wall and everyone's just like all over the place.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that's my TV show. You just watch kids being chaotic.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Running all over the place.
SPEAKER_04Like, welcome to Ooblong.
SPEAKER_01Ooblah.
SPEAKER_04Or what's the case?
SPEAKER_01I don't know what it is.
SPEAKER_04No, okay.
SPEAKER_01There's there's no like written uh title. No. It's just the sound. Ooh.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. That's your sound of just giving up. Giving up.
SPEAKER_01Is it a show for adults or children?
SPEAKER_04I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Anyway, let's talk about sand.
SPEAKER_04Okay, let's talk about sand.
SPEAKER_01You know what? A more interesting subject. Yeah. Sand.
SPEAKER_04Sand. Quick.
Could You Drown And What Happens Next
SPEAKER_01To the sand. Formation of quicksand. Quicksand forms where loose sand meets water under the right conditions, which is basically what I said. You can find quicksand in river banks or deltas, beaches at low tide, marshes or estuaries near underground springs. Yeah. Can you actually sink? Despite what mem movies show. Mirror movies. Movies.
unknownMovies.
SPEAKER_01Despite what movies show, you cannot be sucked completely under.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01What? What? Okay, why? The density of quicksand, okay, math, is higher than the density of the human body. And then more math.
SPEAKER_03Well.
SPEAKER_01Therefore, a person will float once they displace enough quicksand. You might sink up to your w I I read wrist. It said waist. You might sink up to your wrists. It depends on where your wrists are. Yeah. If it's by your waist, then it's still your waist. But if your wrists are above your head, then don't raise your arms. Don't raise your arms because your wrists will save you. Okay, you might sink up to your waist or chest, but not vanish beneath the surface. The real danger is entrapment. Moving fast makes you sink deeper, and the environmental exposure, heat, dehydration, or incoming tides can turn the situation deadly. You're already trapped under the sand, and then you've got tides attacking you as well. This is an unfortunate situation.
SPEAKER_04Sand tide?
SPEAKER_01Sand tides. No, no, like on the beach. Okay. If you sink into the sand at the beach.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01But uh So think if Owen Wilson was on the beach and he's like covered in s he's just a head, and then he's got like tides coming over him too.
SPEAKER_04He's drowning. Yeah, that's true. Like he uh does in a lot of his movies.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04He just sinks into sand for some reason.
SPEAKER_01He's uh vulnerable to quick sand.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah, his Achilles heel is sand. Okay. Maybe. Since he sinks in it and just his head is above it.
SPEAKER_02Hmm.
SPEAKER_04At least two movies that happened. In both of the movies he played a cowboy, so maybe maybe that's the problem.
SPEAKER_01He needs to stop being a cowboy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. How to escape quicksand safely.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01Don't panic. Stay calm to avoid rapid movement. Lean back. Spread your weight over a larger area, which increases buoyancy. Slowly wiggle your legs. This allows water to seep in and loosen the sand around your limbs. Float or crawl out. Move toward solid ground slowly, staying mostly horizontal. Yeah, horizontal, that's like laying down. Yes. Yeah, okay. Myths versus reality. So the myth is quicksand sucks you under. The reality is it can trap you but won't fully engulf you.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01Another myth is that it's found only in jungles or deserts. But the reality is that it's common near rivers, marshes, beaches, and even construction sites.
SPEAKER_04Oh, wow. That's not good.
SPEAKER_01Not good.
SPEAKER_04Where's the building?
SPEAKER_01It's underground. It panicked, so it just sucked all the way. Instant death trap is the myth, but the reality is I lost where I was.
SPEAKER_04Uh usually forgot what you said.
SPEAKER_01The reality is that I forgot. Um the reality is it's usually not fatal unless combined with environmental hazards. Like being underwater, I guess. Um the last myth is you can't escape. But with patience and proper movement, you can.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Where quicksand occurs. I said that. But this is more specific. Some notable locations. River banks in the Amazon basin.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01Uh don't go there.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_01Coastal areas in California and the UK. They're not really close to each other, but that's where they are. It sounded like it could have been. Marshlands in Southeast Asia around volcanic or geothermal springs where gases can increase fluidization. Fluidization.
SPEAKER_04Wow. You don't wanna be around a volcano. No. Like stuck in sand around a volcano who is like uh erupting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's uh an unfortunate situation.
SPEAKER_04What do you do?
SPEAKER_01It's bad enough that you found the one spot where there was quicksand.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But by coincidence, volcano just decides to erupt.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then you're just like sitting there like waiting for the lava. Alright. This is just how it's gonna be. Someone really wants me dead. They trapped me here, and then they're gonna drown me in lava. So I guess this is j you just give up at that point. Yeah. There's no escaping. No. It's gonna hurt, but it'll go over.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Hopefully soon.
SPEAKER_01Pretty quickly, hopefully. I mean, I wonder what it's like to be on fire. You know? You see like people running around on fire? That must hurt. You do? I just wonder.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01You you would imagine well, for some reason I was thinking that if you're on fire, then you're dead. But then you've got people running around on fire. So, like, why? How? How are you still running and not dead?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Fire kills you.
SPEAKER_04And shouldn't it be better if you just lay down and roll?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. I don't usually think about rolling around in the dirt when I'm panicking. No, but otherwise I'd be very dirty all the time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but when you're on fire, that's a different situation.
SPEAKER_01Imagine me in the grocery store and I start panicking because of the people around me and I just lay down fire.
SPEAKER_00So I lay down and start rolling around this floor. Put me out! Help! Put me out! Help! Help!
SPEAKER_04It burns.
SPEAKER_00Everything, the feelings, they burn. It hurts.
What’s Ruining Our Lives
SPEAKER_04Every week.
SPEAKER_00You'd be surprised. Yeah. Oh, she's here again. Lauren's freaking out. Better go throw some water at her so that she'll like calm down.
SPEAKER_04They got buckets of water ready for you.
SPEAKER_01Yep. You need your fire extinguishers and you need buckets of water to calm me down. Then I'll just be sad because I'm wet. Okay. So that was that. Okay. Where what was the question? Well, first, did you have a question? Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_04I I just thought it was kind of funny, uh just a comment on the lava thing that we were talking about. It was uh a thing like that in uh night at the museum secret room.
SPEAKER_01There was a volcano that erupted.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, Pompeii.
SPEAKER_01Did you have a question about quicksand?
SPEAKER_04Uh yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04Uh I that was just a comment. Now here's the question. Wow. How deep does uh quicksand go?
SPEAKER_01The depth of quicksand is one of the most misunderstood parts of the phenomenon. Uh the typical depth of quicksand is about 0.3 to 1.5 meters or one to five feet. I'm five foot three, so I've only got three inches left here.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um what?
SPEAKER_01Will your nose be over No three centimeters like or inches, like maybe that much.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Okay, so you only have to. I've got a forehead.
SPEAKER_01If you see a lump in the ground, it looks like a forehead, maybe some hair, it it's probably me because I drowned in quicksand.
SPEAKER_04You should have like um straw that you can put in your nostrils or something.
SPEAKER_01So I don't want things up my nose.
SPEAKER_04But then you can breathe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay, but then I have to hold the other nostril so that I'm not like accidentally inhaling sand.
Closing, Events, And Where To Find Us
SPEAKER_04True. But then again, you're only gonna be up to here, so it's not uh to my wrists. Yeah, to your wrists. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I'm just I'm probably just letting it take me. So I'm I've got my arms up.
SPEAKER_04Maybe you should put your arms to the side down so so you don't sink that much.
SPEAKER_01Okay, maybe.
SPEAKER_04Sink about that.
SPEAKER_01Sink. What? You say that? You really said that? Alright. Deeper pockets rarely exceed three meters or ten feet. So it could be 0.3 meters. How much is that?
SPEAKER_040.3.
SPEAKER_01Is that 30 centimeters?
SPEAKER_0430 centimeters. Like a head.
SPEAKER_01It's a head.
SPEAKER_04It's a foot, really.
SPEAKER_01Okay. My foot or your foot?
SPEAKER_04Um measurement?
SPEAKER_01Measurement. Okay.
SPEAKER_04I think.
SPEAKER_01But it can never truly be bottomless.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_01Even if fe even if it feels endless when you step in, there's always a denser layer underneath, usually compact as sand, silt, or rock. The bottomless quicksand idea comes from movies exaggerating danger, slow settling speed, which gives the illusion of infinite depth, mud flats or estuaries where, yeah, people can sink deeper into soft clay, but not true quicksand.
SPEAKER_04Okay. I'm I'm just thinking, how unlucky would it be to go head first down quicksand?
SPEAKER_00Why are you diving into quicksand?
SPEAKER_04Because we said so.
SPEAKER_01Okay, hold on. I'm gonna continue this. Okay. I have one other thing. The real risk isn't the death though. You're unlikely to sink forever, but getting stuck waist deep can immobilize you. And if you're in a tidal zone, rising water can turn a survivable situation deadly. Also, fatigue and panic can worsen the entrapment. Now, can you dive into quicksand? Was the question. That's a fantastic question. It wanted to say that, and a dramatic one too. No, you cannot dive into quicksand the way you might dive into water.
SPEAKER_04I beg to differ.
SPEAKER_01If you try to dive into quicksand headfirst or even just step hard into it, the physics of the material immediately work against you. Because quicksand is not a liquid like water. It's a dense, semi-solid suspension of sand, water, and sometimes clay. And then math. What would happen if you tried? Did I say that?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_01Okay. If you try to dive into quicksand, your body stops fast, like hitting a heavy med mud bed. Your upper body might splash partially in, but you'd be supported by buoyancy. You won't sink head first unless you deliberately force yourself down. I'm trying really hard. And if you did get stuck, moving rapidly would make extraction harder, which uh increases suction.
SPEAKER_04Okay. So let's say you're um master at uh uh doing the hand stance.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04And do the hand stance in uh quicksand.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04How would that what would happen then?
SPEAKER_01That's a deep physics question. Which combines balance, fluid mechanics, and human buoyancy in a fascinating and very messy way. Uh what you're trying to do, so you're inverted, your hands are planted in a patch of quicksand, body vertical, feet in the air. Let's assume you're on natural quicksand, sand saturated with water. You're not being supported by solid ground, if it's truly fluidized, and you're attempting to balance and not dive. So what happens immediately is that your hands will sink quickly, your hands and arms apply high pressure over a small area, which is your palms. That pressure overwhelms the quicksand's yield strength. So the sandwater structure collapses locally, your hands sink in fast, perhaps 10 to 30 centimeters almost immediately, but then it resists further. So once your hands are partly submerged, the quicksand's density now supports your upper body. You won't keep sinking endlessly because you're less dense.
SPEAKER_00So you'll stop sinking after your upper arms or shoulders enter the mixture. So if you fall over, you're gonna break your arms, probably.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because your arms are like in cement, basically, and then you fall over and you're you would have your head in it too, then.
SPEAKER_01Partially, I think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But it doesn't say anything about my head, it says my arms. So here's where physics will turn against you.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Your center of mass, uh like around your torso and your hips, is above the surface, and your support base, your hands, is in a dense fluid that flows slightly around them. So the quicksand can't provide a stable platform for balance. The grains shift and flow under uneven pressure, and you'll tip over almost immediately, probably sideways.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So it's basically like doing a handstand in pudding or very thick mud. And if you tip over as you fall, which is what I was basically saying, your arms and shoulders are partly stuck. So this creates a torque on your body.
SPEAKER_00You'll roll to one side, possibly twisting an arm slightly.
SPEAKER_01The trapped arm creates suction, making it hard to pull free quickly. And if you panic and pull fast, you'll increase suction resistance, potentially causing a strain or dislocation risk. If you move slowly, you'll break the seal and free yourself gradually. So if you're gonna fall, do it slowly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. You should think about that all the time. If you fall.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04That's slowly.
SPEAKER_01Could you ever get fully inverted with your feet down? Yes, but only if you intentionally push downward while doing it. So your body density is less than quicksand, so you'll float naturally. To be fully submerged upside down, because this is something you want to do.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You'd need to actively push down and displace quicksand, which is incredibly tiring. And even then, once you stop pushing, your buoyant torso would rise back up, flipping you right side up again. So in effect, quicksand will reject your handstand.
SPEAKER_04Aww.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I don't take rejection well.
SPEAKER_01No, neither do I. Can you do a handstand?
SPEAKER_04I can't. But I know you can.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I can.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01And um I wasn't planning on trying.
SPEAKER_04No, I just wanted to say that you should think about where you do it. So you don't accidentally do it in quicksand. Because that could lead you to trouble.
SPEAKER_01I guess so. Now I'm gonna ask how to recognize quicksand. Okay. Because in the movies it looked just like sand. Yeah. And then suddenly, bam, you're in quicksand. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It looks like sand, but also like a small circle around it. Like uh almost a little bit wavy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Let's see. How to recognize quicksand. What it actually looks like. The typical appearance is a wet, smooth patch or s of sand or silt, often glossier or darker than its surroundings. It may glisten slightly due to trapped surface water. Sometimes it appears to ripple or vibrate subtly when water seeps up.
SPEAKER_04Ripple, that's what what I was thinking of.
SPEAKER_01Ripples.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, ripples, ripples.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, it often blends perfectly with normal wet sand. The difference is in how it behaves when disturbed. So think wet sandy flat places with visible groundwater or recent flooding. So if you touch quicksand, uh it feels spongy and not firm. With movement, it starts to liquefy beneath your feet. And if you stand still, you might sink in. Because it's quicksand.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So how not to sink? Is it to move around? Jump, maybe?
SPEAKER_01Um.
SPEAKER_04If it's like make it more dense.
SPEAKER_01You uh you're supposed to stay calm. So like maybe calmly try to swim up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Sounds like um I mean before before you get stuck in it. Like um because like you said with the Uber Luba. Yeah. That thing. Yeah. Um that w if you hit it, yeah, it's solid. Right. Otherwise you sink. That's what I'm thinking. If you move around, maybe you stay on top of it.
SPEAKER_01Maybe. I don't know. Like maybe if you s feel yourself to like start to sink, then you like kick down and then maybe you can jump.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Maybe.
SPEAKER_01Here's some safety tips. Okay. Okay. So we avoid quick sands.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, always carry a walking stick when hiking near wetlands or rivers. Avoid low flat areas with shiny waterlogged sand after rain or high tide. Never test it by jumping. Always probe it first.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Maybe I was wrong. Yeah, so don't listen to us.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_04Or do, I don't really care, actually.
SPEAKER_01If your companion sinks, stay calm and use a branch or rope and pull slowly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And by the way, don't do that because we want listeners, so.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_04Uh whatever you do, don't Don't go die on us.
SPEAKER_01No, don't sink into quicksand, please. I had one more, at least. One more question. Where do you end up when you drown in quicksand, I guess.
SPEAKER_04I like that we it's like we haven't listened to or understand what we previously read.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_04You just get stuck in it. You don't sink in it. I'm kind of like, okay, but what do you where do you end up?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but where do you go? Okay, but let's say you drown in quicksand. Where do you go?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Does it transport you somewhere? Yeah. Are you just trapped in a room?
SPEAKER_04In this room.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_04With me. Scary thought.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so open eyes, of course, shut up. It has to be realistic. And it's like, you almost can't drown in quicksand.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01The chances of you actually drowning in quicksand is low.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01But hypothetically. Hypothetically, if someone did go under, for someone to truly drown in quicksand, additional forces must be involved. Like a rising tide or floodwaters cover them. The person loses consciousness and slips beneath, or extra sand or sediment collapses over them. So don't like keep throwing sand on them if they're drowning. Um I'm helping. I help. Um, what happens to a body in quicksand? So these are post-mortem physics.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01After they die, buoyancy still applies. The body will still be less dense than the quicksand, so it tends to rise or at least remain suspended rather than sink to the bottom. Decomposition gases will be produced that make the body even more buoyant. So you if you're trying to get rid of a corpse, don't just throw it into quips quicksand because it's gonna come back.
SPEAKER_04Quipsand.
SPEAKER_01Quipsand. Equipped sand.
SPEAKER_04Equipped sand.
SPEAKER_01In some clay-rich quicksands, which are common near deltas and marshes, fine particles can encase the body. This slows decomposition and can, in theory, preserve soft tissue, similar to how peat bogs preserve bodies, though conditions differ chemically. There's no underground room or void. That image of people being sucked down into a hidden cavern beneath the surface is a movie myth, not how real quicksand works. If you stepped into quicksand, you'd get stuck, not swallowed or teleported. There's no secret room or abyss underneath, just a very heavy, wet, and muddy trap that resists fast movement.
SPEAKER_04Okay, so no tomb. I guess not secret of the tomb. Yeah. No. No way. Boring. That's what I'm gonna say when I uh drown in quicksand. Boring. There's no tomb here.
SPEAKER_01So, alright. I said I had one last question, and this this one is it. Okay. Because I'm totally not gonna come up with anything else.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_00What are the chances I sink into quicksand? Should I be super concerned about this?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, what's the percentage?
SPEAKER_00Give me a percentage.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so your chances of quick sinking into quicksand or sir I can't read. That's all. Okay. Uh that's how it is.
SPEAKER_04The end.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's the end of the episode. I can't even say that. Your chances. Your chances of quick okay.
SPEAKER_00I'm working hard on this sentence. It's not working. Your chances of sinking into quicksand or being seriously harmed by it are extremely low.
SPEAKER_01If you live an average outdoor lifestyle, your chance of sinking into quicksand deeply enough to be at real risk is roughly 0.00001% or one in ten million. In other words, no, you definitely don't need to be worried. What about in Sweden?
SPEAKER_04You're really worried about that.
SPEAKER_00Aw, that was the end of that. Um what about in Sweden? Well, I couldn't find any reliable data giving a precise percentage for your risk of sinking into quicksand in Sweden.
SPEAKER_01Here's a summary of what I found. So the evidence shows for Sweden there was a report, okay, that in southern Swedish town of Trellebori, Trelleborg.
SPEAKER_04Trellebori.
SPEAKER_01Trelleborg. Yeah. In English, American, Trelleborg, at least two people had gotten stuck in quicksand on the beach. Oh. I should be concerned. Yeah. We don't live there.
SPEAKER_04Not me.
SPEAKER_01Not you. You don't need to be concerned.
SPEAKER_04No, I don't go to the beach. That's why I stay away from the beach.
SPEAKER_01I guess so. Quicksand.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Anyone asks, your go-to answer should be no, quicksand.
SPEAKER_04In case I want to do a handstand.
SPEAKER_00I might get the urge to do a handstand on the beach, and then I'll drown. I don't know where I'll go. Just that is enough.
SPEAKER_04And be disappointed that there's no tomb on No, no, not a room.
SPEAKER_01But if I die, I'll still float, so it's okay, I guess. The overall risk of encountering natural quicksand, in the sense of sinking waist deep or worse, in Sweden is extremely low. For typical everyday activities like walking on beaches or hiking, you don't need to be highly worried. That said, there are zones. There is a possibility. Obviously, people did it. Like wet beaches after heavy rain, where the risk is somewhat elevated, so basic caution is sensible. So we're not gonna go to that place. No. Just so you know.
SPEAKER_04Or not.
SPEAKER_01No. Do you have any more questions? No, I think I'm good. Are you good here? Oh yeah. Yes, you are. You are done here. That was fun.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I hope you learned something.
SPEAKER_04I did.
SPEAKER_01Good, and so did I. Are you all done with your sips?
SPEAKER_04I'm all out of sips, so we're all out of episodes.
SPEAKER_01So while we near the end of the episode, the very, very end. Please tell me what is ruining your life. Oh, that was my back.
SPEAKER_04Your back. No, actu actually my back.
SPEAKER_01Your back? Yeah. What about my back?
SPEAKER_04I don't care about your back. Alright, what about your back? It hurts.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_04Thank you for reminding me.
SPEAKER_00You needed a reminder? Okay.
SPEAKER_04No, I think I've been uh working uh at a different apartment this week.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you have?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Okay. So Where? Uh in in Leverance.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Like inside? Yeah. What?
SPEAKER_04I'm inside now. I uh lift heavy um boxes. Okay. And uh that hurts my back a little bit. Okay. Because I'm not used to it.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Maybe you should start lifting. Yeah. Do you even lift, bruh?
SPEAKER_04I've been doing that all week.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. That's all.
SPEAKER_04What's ruining your life?
SPEAKER_01I have a couple things. Okay. Okay. The most recent thing is the PS2 that I recently got. I can't play Jackie Chan on it. I know. I I tried to hook it up to another screen and it's just it's I can't figure it out. It's uh work that I don't understand. Um yes. The other thing is that I have finals. I'm in the middle of finals right now. I have math that I'm gonna do on Monday. Yeah. And then I have my very last Swedish final on Wednesday. Okay. So yeah, it's uh my my brain is mush and stress, and I don't know what I'm doing.
SPEAKER_04Maybe you should go to a sand therapist.
SPEAKER_01Sand therapy. I have a question. That's for another time. Yeah. Would you like to wrap this up?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, let's do that.
