Womb & Birth Imprints: The Missing Layer Shaping Regulation, Burnout, and Healing Outcomes
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if some of the patterns you see every day in your clients – and even in yourself – didn’t originate in injury, posture, or muscle tone… but before birth itself?
In this episode, we explore womb and birth imprints – implicit, body-based patterns formed during the prenatal, perinatal, and early postnatal periods that shape regulation, attachment, stress responses, and core beliefs throughout life.
This is not theory for theory’s sake. This is clinical relevance.
If you work with pelvic pain, postpartum recovery, trauma, nervous system dysregulation, burnout, or clients who feel “stuck despite doing all the right things,” this conversation opens a critical missing layer in assessment and treatment.
✨ What You’ll Learn In This Episode:
- What womb and birth imprints actually are – and how they are stored in the limbic system as implicit memory
- Why pre-verbal experiences show up as patterns, sensations, and beliefs, not stories
- Two of the most common imprints seen in healers and pelvic health practitioners:
- How specific birth experiences (labored C-sections, forceps, vacuum, induction, breech birth) can shape lifelong coping and behavioral patterns
- Why the body “knows no time” and how repatterning is possible – safely, respectfully, and effectively
- Clinical cues that tell you when to explore womb or birth imprints with a client
- A moving case study showing how shifting an imprint changed a client’s capacity to support her child
This episode bridges neuroscience, pelvic health, perinatal psychology, and somatic healing – offering practitioners a way to work at the root rather than chasing symptoms.

Hello, everybody, and welcome to this episode. Today, I'm going to be talking about a topic that is near and dear to my heart.
I absolutely love teaching about this topic because of the impact and how powerful it is when you work with and heal this topic, which is going to be womb and birth imprints.
And before we dive into this topic, though, I do want to let you know this is a topic that I teach in the Birth Healing Intensive Program, and this is the last week to register and be a part of this year's Birth Healing Intensive Program.
So if you are on the fence or you're wondering if maybe this is the program for you or not, please just fill out an application.
You can find it in the show notes and just fill out that application. We'll get on a call and see if the program is the right.
And I would love for you all to be a part of this 2026 cohort because it's just such, such, such, such, such powerful work.
So let's go ahead and dive into womb imprints. So womb imprints are really imprints are the lasting psychological and physiological patterns that are formed in a baby from the experiences in the womb during birth and in the early postnatal period.
They're sometimes called limbic or womb birth imprints, and they are understood as implicit body-based memories that shape later regulation, attachment, and core expectations about safety, connection, and stress.
And these birth imprints refer to how the prenatal, perinatal, and immediate postpart and postnatal experiences are. The in the baby's limbic system and body.
And these influence their emotional tone, their stress responses, and relationship templates across their life. And because these experiences are pre-verbal, they're often stored as sensations, patterns of arousal, and implicit memory, rather than conscious narrative memory.
And so to review a little bit about the limbic system is the network of deep brain structures that help regulate our emotions, memories, motivation, and their key survival behaviors like feeding, reproduction, and fight or flight responses.
The limbic system works closely with the endocrine and the autonomic nervous system. So it really strongly influences our stress hormones, heart rate, and other body reactions to emotional events.
And really it's our time in the womb is when we're being developed, our nervous system and brain are being developed.
And it makes sense that that time in the womb needs to be, the brain and nervous system need to be developed in a way that it's going to be able to survive in its environment.
And I absolutely have burned in my brain this ultrasound video that Dr. Bruce Lipton shared at a talk that I was at of his.
He wrote one of his books is Biology of Belief. And in this ultrasound image was the baby, and then you could hear the parents arguing outside or near the ultrasound, and every time the parents would yell or get mad, the baby would just startle.
And that startle is helping to develop its nervous system to be able to survive in the environment in which it's being born into makes total sense.
And yet we can go back into that timeframe and re-pattern. Thank you. Thank We can shift that imprint and help create greater safety for that baby or whatever is coming up for them, however they are showing up in the world.
And these womb imprints are really at the core of our being. They are really impacting how we're showing up in the world.
And that's why I just love working with them because it really, really does shift how we show up in the world once we shift and work with these imprints.
We need to understand that our bodies know no time and space. So we can access these implicit memories, these sensations in our body from that time in the womb.
And we can work with it with whatever showing up in the body and learn to shift and change these imprints.
And when we do, we shift how someone's showing up in the world. Usually, there's some limiting beliefs that might be associated with the time in the womb, and we shift those limiting beliefs, and it shifts how we show up in the world.
So there's two common patterns that I find in working with my clients, and there's many, many more, but these are the ones that have showed up repeatedly over time in doing this work.
And the biggest one, especially for healers and therapists, people working with other people in the medical field, the biggest one is I have to save the world.
And that is an imprint that gets implanted when a baby feels that mom is not safe and secure, or mom is in need of support.
The baby will give all of its energy to mom if baby doesn't sense that mom's really stable and healthy and happy.
That because baby's survival depends on mom's survival, and if baby doesn't feel like mom is going It's going to do whatever it can to help make mom able to survive.
And, you know, one of the first things we need to do is help baby to understand that it did survive.
And then we need to work with shifting this pattern of giving its energy to mom. And usually there can be the limiting belief that shows up with this mostly is that I'm responsible for mom.
And it's, you know, it's a survival mechanism. The baby's just trying to make it, trying to survive to be born.
And it does what it can to make that happen. So we need to shift the limiting belief that baby thinks that it's responsible for mom.
And there is an outpouring of energy for this baby. And because mom is the world to a baby in that womb space, the baby is born with the imprint that I have to save the world.
Because it was having to save mom. And now it's born with this imprint of, have to save the world.
And boy, that is so challenging as a practitioner because you take on, you take it so personally when your clients aren't getting better, when, you know, you can feel like a failure because your clients aren't getting better, or, you know, you feel overly responsible for the success of your clients.
And that's draining. I re I remember I had it, I did that. And, um, a lot shifted for me when I shifted this imprint and realized that I'm not responsible for everybody else.
I'm only responsible for me. And that is true. Even with those, even those of us that have kids, yes, we're responsible for keeping them safe and keeping them alive.
But in, in reality, we're not responsible for their, their choices. And we can try to control our kids all we want.
Let me tell you, your kids don't like it. They don't like being controlled. But yet, some of that could be from like, well, I have to, I'm responsible for my kids.
And we're responsible to educate them and keep them safe and age appropriate responsibility. Yet, kids are going to do what they're going to do.
And that is, this is their life and their journey. And we are, I like to see, you know, parenting more as a coach, I could go on and on about that could be a whole nother episode.
topic, but on parenting. But the the point is, is that we truly really are only responsible for ourselves, and making sure that that we focus on ourselves first, and then be there to just support someone else in their own journey in this lifetime.
That's that's truly our goal as therapists. And so helping to shift this womb imprint is a huge, huge, Issue that can can help relieve you of that stress and that if you're feeling burnt out and drained at the end of your day, that could be one of the issues why the other common birth imprint that I was finding is I have to dim my light, because there's a lot of us out there that are dimming our lights in order to be or maybe even feel safe in the world.
And baby resonates, baby senses that in the womb. And so it takes on that same belief, because if moms that baby can't be brighter than mom, and we want to help shift that so baby can and give mom permission to do the same.
So those are two really impactful womb imprints that we can work on. And there's others that can show up too.
But when I do womb imprints, it's it's really, you know, a lot of it is intuitively when I know to go there.
And it really depends on what my clients are saying. If they're overly responsible for their kids or their parents or, you know, that, I'm really going to go check out and see if they have that.
I have the Save the World imprint. And intuitively, I just get a sense that this is like it's coming from when they were being developed, that whatever we're working on or whatever issue is coming up for them, if I get the sense that it was from their time in the womb, then I go back and I do these womb imprints.
And again, there's birth imprints as well, and the birth imprints can show up in different ways. And that's why it's important for us to understand what these different imprints are so that we can listen and hear what our clients are saying to know when we need to go there with them to explore this to see if this is an issue for them.
Um, with birth imprints, it's really how we're coming out in. into the world. And one of the big ones that I talk about in the intensive program is cesarean births, especially a labored cesarean birth.
The baby gets stuck. It's, it's working its way out and boom, it gets stuck. And then it has to be rescued.
It has, someone else has to help finish the process. And that is a must be saved imprint that is, um, that is implanted in that baby.
And you find that these, these people have an imprint that can show up for them is like, well, they're doing, they're doing something, but if they get to a challenge, they just kind of give up and they wait for someone else to come rescue them.
Um, and I, I had a coach that I came across and I was sharing this idea about imprints and she reached back out.
She was like, Holy cow. After you talk to me about that, I am seeing all the time where I get to myself into a situation.
I feel stuck and I feel I'm looking for the next person to save me. And we worked on that and we shifted that.
And then she found she was more empowered to figure out and get through the struggles on her own and not be looking externally for her.
People who are born with forceps and vacuum also need that assistance. It could be one of their imprints. I wish more OBGYNs and midwives were aware of the impact of these imprints.
APA, the, I wonder if I can remember these, the Association for Perinatal, Prenatal Psychology and Health maybe, but birthpsychology.com is their website.
They do amazing work and I love their annual conferences. I've spoken at a couple of them and I've been to a couple and just the, it's all about perinatal psychology.
of our time in the womb, our birth and how. How that influences how we show up in this world, and it is powerful, powerful stuff.
So I hope that more and more doctors, I mean, there was an OB that spoke, and I just absolutely, he actually was on my summit early on in the probably 18, 19, somewhere in there, and he, I was just like, oh my goodness, could you just please birth every baby?
Because he just had such respect for the birth field, the birth time, with, you know, allowing babies to have their own journey, and, you know, people, babies who are induced, they tend to have a timing issue where they get, they feel rushed, or they don't like it when people are trying to hurry them along, they want to take their own time, there's a lot of resistance resistance to timing in their life, that could be a, an induction imprint, and, yeah, just
Everything that happens as that babies come out into the world, just think about the, you know, I see some of these videos of these doctors just dangling a baby by a leg upside down as it pulls it out of the C-section or whatever.
And I'm just like, oh my gosh, we're treating these babies like a sack of potatoes. And yet the, you know, the, the nurturing and the care of this individual coming into this world needs to be done with reverence.
Not like you're holding up a fish to weigh it, you know, I'm just surgeons and doctors. We just need to help them understand more about the impact of their words and their actions on these babies and how it is impacting how they're showing up in the world.
I know that, um, you know, our birth process when we're working, you know, over the years, I've had different experiences, uh, around my birth.
care we're And again, I was born breach. And my dad was so proud at the time because he was one of the first men allowed in my brother's birth two years prior to mine.
So my dad's like, Oh, I got this. I, you know, I've been at a birth before. Well, I came out breach.
And he said he was a little, he didn't share much, but he was kind of like taken aback by that.
That was a little scary for him. But, um, when I replayed my birth, I came out feet first and I, I was just in a session and my right leg jutted out in front and the left leg was tucked up in.
And when I confirmed with my mom, I was like, did I, was I born one foot first? And she's like, yes, you were.
I go, was it my right one? She goes, I don't know. I go, but it was my body remembered.
And, um, in looking at the representation of that, the right leg is putting yourself out into the world, moving forward, bringing your work out into the world.
And the left side is receiving and bringing in and I was holding myself back. And as I became aware of this pattern, I said, Oh, my goodness, I had written an article for midwifery today about what I was finding in the pelvis.
And I was so excited when I read it, and it got published. But then when I read it, and I got to the end, I'm like, there was no contact information.
There was no way for anyone to find me or get ahold of me. And I was like, Oh, my gosh, there's that birth pattern.
And there was a couple other experiences like, Oh, yeah, there it is again, there it is again. And then I shifted that and repatterned it.
And I don't have as much of a sense of that holding back. I'm putting myself out there. I'm doing a podcast, right?
And you guys are listening. Thank you very much. But we can shift these patterns from our time in the womb and how we were born.
And I know I did another session with some Colleagues of mine, some good friends of mine, and I was being born, and it was back to my birth again, and when I came out feet first, so think about the suction or the tension of the cervix coming up my body as my body's coming out, and then my neck, I know my neck got stuck, and it's like I blacked out.
And I just remember in this session, there was this sense of like, nobody cares. Nobody cares that I died, was the belief I took on.
And I look back on my life, and there were so many instances of I just wanted someone to care.
You know, it's like my mom was a very busy body and always got things done, but I didn't get that connection, that attachment to her like I really wanted.
And it like, it started at the birth. And so there's just been... All these different steps of shifting, and then another time, actually a student who was helping me out, she did a session with me, and she ended up, we were standing as we got done, and then she just put her hand on the side of my cheek.
Thank you, Kelly, very much for this, but she just held her hand on the side of my cheek, and my head just started turning, she had her hand on my left side, and my face was turning to the right, and I just got a sense, it just was doing it super slowly, and I kept doing it over and over again, turning, coming back to the midline, and I got a sense that I was slapped at my birth to come to from being unconscious, and my body was like, I wasn't ready, I wasn't ready to come back into my body yet, and it was jarring to my nervous system to have that to be, to have been slapped, and I just
I find it fascinating, all these little pieces to the puzzle of our birth and how they impact us. And the impact of that slap and coming in too early is like, I am a, I am, let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go.
And I want things done fast and do it. And it was like, that just gave me, I felt like molasses after Kelly and I did that session.
And just the ability for me to slow down and be okay in my body again was just fascinating to me because it was so new.
My body has not known that slower pace in this lifetime until then. So that was pretty darn cool. But wouldn't it be amazing if doctors really understood the impact of their actions on a child's, on a baby's life?
And if. And if. How they show up in the world and granted we know that doctors are doing what they're doing for to save babies to keep you know them alive but the fact that there's there's a lack of reverence to how a baby is treated as it comes out you know the bright lights and and then getting the vernix off of it you know like in the wiping and smudging I was like stop whenever I see videos of the nurses and the doctors and how they treat babies right as they come on out I'm just like oh we have to change the experience in the hospitals for these babies for the future of our country and our communities and just for people in general the way we are born really does impact how our our experience in the world and how we show up in the world.
So know that you have the power and the potential to shift these imprints with your And if this is intriguing for you, I encourage you to please sign up for the register for the birth healing intensive and fill out an application and let's get on a call and let's talk about this more because I would love to have you be a part of that if this is intriguing for you and you'd like to add this to your practice because I tell you it is so powerful and impactful.
And I have to share, I had a client that came in and she was, she didn't have anything, no physical issues.
She really came in more for the cranial kind of energetic work that I do. And as we were addressing something in her body, I just got drawn to do the womb imprint.
And so I brought her back to her time in the womb and she was feeling like she had to take care of mom as that baby to keep her surviving.
The baby's surviving and the limiting belief I have, I'm responsible for mom was shifted. And we shifted that to I'm only responsible for me.
And it was just so empowering to feel that shift land in her body as she replaced that limiting belief.
And then she told me the next time she came back in for a session that shortly after that session, where we shifted that belief, she got a call like within a day or two of her from her son, who shared with her that he was going through a divorce.
And he was going through a really hard time, very emotional. And she was shocked that she felt like she goes, I didn't have to bring him inside of myself.
She goes, I didn't realize that I could keep people outside of myself when they're going through things like that.
I've always felt like I've had to bring them inside of me and hold them. And she said, I was just able to just be there for him and listen and know that he wasn't, this wasn't my responsibility.
There was nothing for me to do for him or to how to help him other than. And to just be there and listen.
And she said it was so amazing for her and so different than how she has been in the past.
So that was such a special story that she shared with me. And I just love the impact that these imprints and shifting these imprints and how they can affect how we're showing up in the world.
So keep that in mind. Please learn how to work with this so that you, too, can have these amazing, impactful sessions and help your clients to show up in a new way in their life.
OK, so thank you so much for listening in to this. I'd love to see you in the Birth Healing Intensive Program.
