You have the idea. You have the design. You even know exactly how you want the finished product to look. But who the hell is going to make it?
Finding the right person or company to manufacture your fashion product can be one of the biggest challenges of building a brand. The wrong manufacturer can cost you time, money, quality, and sometimes the entire vision behind the product.
In this episode of A Lott Of Fashion Podcast, we talk about what it really takes to find someone who can turn your designs into physical products. We discuss manufacturers, production partners, samples, minimum order quantities, pricing, quality control, communication, and what designers should look for before handing their product over to someone else.
Because designing the product is one thing. Finding the right person to bring that product to life is another.

What's good everybody? It's your boy D Money. We're on another episode of the Lola Fashion Podcast. And what we're gonna be talking about today is finding someone to make your product. So make sure that you guys like and subscribe. I appreciate all the day ones that have been showing love to our channel and showing love to our content, hopefully showing love to our brand. Definitely been blowing up on my day and life of design series, a live stream on you know Kick Twitch and here to YouTube. Just reached over 400 subscribers, well not 400 subscribers, 400 views. We just reached over 960 subscribers here on YouTube, so definitely, you know, you make sure you show love and you know keep up showing love so that way we can keep growing and giving you the content that you need. Um so the core message with you know finding someone to make a product for your brand is turning an idea into reality requires finding the right production partner, and that's ultimately the thing with any form of business, whether it's you know finding somebody just to partner with you in the form of doing business, um, collaborations, um, and you know, of course, product production. So, you know, the first thing is manufacturer versus supplier, you know, what each one actually does. That is the biggest thing. With the you know, manufacturer, you know, they're primarily the ones that you know are gonna actually create the product from scratch, and there's ones that actually do things in a niche in the industry that you're looking for, so that means that they make a specific product. And if they make a specific product but they offer other products or known for making a specific product and make other products, only go there for the primary production product. Don't go there for the other products because they probably won't produce them as well as that primary product, because that primary product is what makes them money. So focus in on that, and then the supplier is somebody that is a middleman, they actually provide the product that was already produced, so everything is primarily created. They might do you know some custom edits to it, but everything is primarily already created. Um, you know, what each one actually does, we establish that, and then you go into you know the domestics versus you know the overseas production. And you know, for me, I personally feel like it's better to have you know your production close to you so that way you can at least travel close, so that way you can see how everything is being done, make sure that everything is being done in a timely manner, and that way, you know, it also shows how dedicated to you know your partner, how dedicated you know you are to you know the process overall. Um that's why even with us, even though we started out overseas, like my main goal is to become fully integrated and start doing it myself here in the states. Um, number two is choosing the right partner. Um, the main thing is having communication. You always want to have solid communication with you know the people that you partner up with, regardless if it's the production team, um, you know, your employees or you know, business partners. Because if everybody's not able to trust each other or has to question a move that somebody made, then it's gonna cause tension and the work is not gonna be high quality when it's done. Because everybody's not gonna be focused in on the job at hand. They're gonna be focused in on, you know, feeling slighted or, you know, jealous or envious or, you know, a ton of different emotions of negativity that has nothing to do with the actual product or production. You know, quality is number two because craftsmanship and you know, just the overall quality of the product is very important. That's what makes a great product outside of you know the pricing, its durability and reliability, and you know, the lead uh times, you feel me? So all that, you know, is primarily the focus with you know finding the right partner, you know, having reliability, you feel me, it's number three. You have a reliable partner, you know they're gonna get their job done, you know they're gonna show up on time, and you know that they're gonna provide the product when it's said, if not earlier, then you know you have, you know, something brewing. You know, the pricing is number four. You want to have affordable pricing. You also want to make sure that you know you're paying yourself and your employees with your pricing, but you don't want to break, you know, your customers' pockets because you want them to ultimately buy you know new products or the next one. Um, and then like I said, lead times, you know. You want to make sure that you know, every time you have a product getting ready to be released, they're ready to, you know, make sure you have inventory, drop shipping, or you know, whatever is contractually, you know, set up on time. Number three is protecting the business. You know, specifications is a big thing, you know what I'm saying? You want to make sure that you have everything detailed when you know providing your design, say if you know you're a fashion designer or you know a fashion brand, and you want to make sure that each detail measurement, um, material is and you know, placement is on point. Even the patterns and you know graphics are on point. So that way, you know what I'm saying, the the the same language that the manufacturer is speaking, you're speaking in your specifications. Then number two is the contracts. You want to make sure that you read those contracts, number one, and number two, you want to make sure that you know you have some third party that takes a look at those contracts as well, so that way you don't make any mistakes to that. Then number three is quality standards, making sure that even with those contracts, those quality standards are met by you and the uh, you know what I'm saying, manufacturer because they have certain quality standards that they want you to provide when you provide those specifications. You feel me? And they also want you to be, you know, on time in some respects as well, too. So you're not wasting their time. Documentation. You want to make sure that you know you have a copy of everything that you know is said in these conversations, and you know, ultimately, you know, when you sign your contract, and the production process starts and finishes, you feel me? Um and number five is why relationships matter. Relationships are the most important thing because if you don't have a good relationship with these people, you're not gonna get anything done, anything done in quality. Because, like I said, a lot of people, even though it is a business, a lot of people leave with their emotions. So that's just something that you gotta constantly, you know, be careful of, but also mindful of as well, too, so that way, you know, you can get the job done. You just gotta be steps ahead of people, but at the same time, treat people the way you want to be treated. Because at the end of the day, if you don't, you know, show respect, how can you command it? So keep visualizing your purpose, you know what I'm saying? Like I always say, it just takes a solid plan, research, and execution, and your dreams and goals will come to fruition. Let's start living like royalty. I'll catch you guys on the next episode.
