She creates custom gift baskets for you to have delivered during your Walt Disney World vacation, or a fun thing is that she can even ship them to you at home. So whether you're a vacation planner who wants to thank some clients, or you just want to celebrate a special occasion or have someone, or just a special gift for someone. You can definitely reach out to, rachel, so we're excited to have her on the show. And today, because we're talking about gifts and celebrations, I thought it would be a fun tie in to talk about celebrating your birthday at Disney World.

Kris Johns:

That is a great idea.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So we've had a chance to actually we've celebrated all three of our birth. I've celebrated my birthday with my good friend. When I was younger I went with her family right at my birthday. We celebrated our daughter's birthday there last year and Kris Chris's birthday a couple of years ago. I had a conference in Orlando and we spent it at Disney.

Kris Johns:

We did.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Yeah, we went out to Ohana with Ann and Ed and Linda and Sheldon. We had an Olaf cake.

Kris Johns:

Oh, yes, I remember that, yes, and then we went to a baseball game. Yes, our good friends Linda and Sheldon and Ann and Ed as well.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Yes. So we've gotten a chance to celebrate quite a few birthdays. I've done some with my parents, their birthdays as well, and of course, the Disney Company is celebrating a big birthday of 100 years. So I thought let's look at all of the ways that you can celebrate your birthday at Walt Disney World. And so there's I would say there's real excite from the fact that my birthday is in one of the most hot months of the year in Orlando.

Kris Johns:

Yeah, we've never really made plans to go for your birthday. No, I went with intentionally.

Vanessa Ferguson:

No, I went with my friend Judy and her family once.

Kris Johns:

Yes, once.

Vanessa Ferguson:

But my birthday is in the middle of August Not our ideal for those of us from the Midwest to go to Disney World. But I know we've talked about doing some things at Disney and we did celebrate our daughter's birthday, which is in April, there a couple years ago. So let's look at all of the fun things that you can do, and really there's things from I hate to use the word free, because a Disney vacation is already expensive, but if you already have tickets and you're already going to the parks, you're already at the resorts. Some of these things are things that are already included, but that be a better way to put it.

Kris Johns:

Yes.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So first off it sounds really silly and very simple, but get one of the happy birthday buttons and wear it Because you have. If you can go up to guest services at any of the parks or at just at the desks at any of the resorts and on the happy birthday pin they'll put your name on it. Cast members will say happy birthday. I mean you just have random guessing happy birthday. I know when Kris had his birthday pen he got lots of happy birthdays. Our daughter did so wearing the birthday button. And I know some people say, oh, you know you'll get this free, that free. There's no guarantees Disney doesn't have to give you anything free, but I think just the fact of having random strangers say happy birthday is always a lot of fun.

Kris Johns:

Exactly. It just increases your chances for more birthday joy, and I think it's one of those things, too, where if you go looking for it, you're not going to find it, but if you just embrace the day and find that Disney magic, you may be surprised at what you get.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Yes, and you wear your pen If you. If you're so inclined to wear some sort of birthday apparel, that's always fun. I know my friend made us matching shirts for our daughter's fifth birthday and so we all had shirts on. But if that's not your thing, at least get the pen and wear that around where the button around. Another thing that I think is just a fun thing is Watching the fireworks on your birthday. We did pay for the fireworks dessert party at Magic Kingdom the night before our daughter's birthday and that was extra magical. It was nice because we didn't have to go wait two hours to have a spot in front of the castle. We had a set spot. We were able to enjoy the desserts. So that's something nice. But even just watching the fireworks because how many people? Unless your birthday is on the 4th of July, you're not probably guaranteed fireworks on your birthday.

Kris Johns:

Exactly.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So Disney is one place that you can be guaranteed fireworks on your birthday. And another fun thing to do is just to go get character photos. I know we've talked about character dining. We've talked about good places to meet characters, but really for kids of all ages whether you're an adult or you have kids in your party, I think it's a great day to go and take photos with characters. Of course it's great to meet the princesses For us. With our daughter, we tend to go to Epcot. If we want to meet a lot of the princesses, if we don't have a character dining meal set up, because you can go and meet them in the different countries, we've done that near her birthday before.

Vanessa Ferguson:

If you have some extra money in your budget, doing the Bippity Boppity boutique and taking your little one there to get a makeover and then go around the park and take photos, it's a lot of fun. And, of course, if you have, if your kids aren't really into the princess thing, you could also have them. They don't have the pirate experience anymore, but just have them dress up as a pirate and I know some people talk about going to buy pirates of the Caribbean and usually there's the Captain Jack Sparrow meet and greet doing that. If your kids or adults in your group are into Star Wars, you can go do some of the great Star Wars things at Hollywood Studios. A lot of people will save up and buy the lightsaber or a droid, which is more expensive, but then you have to have a reservation ahead of time. But if you're really into that I think it can make it extra special. Another thing of course we talk a lot about food.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Sure, do and so our last episode. We talked about special occasion dining and like the fine dining options you have. But I think another thing, and so I'll put the link to that show in the show notes in case you missed it. But I think character meals really add a lot on a birthday. For our daughter's birthday that was last year we went to Chef Mickey's and again, nothing better than photos with Mickey on your birthday. A while back we were down for one of my aunt's birthdays and we all went to Tusker House and that was so much fun. The adults loved it. We didn't have anybody under the age of 18, I don't think in our group and we all had a great time.

Kris Johns:

Wonderful time.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So that's a great thing, and finding those character meals and getting those reservations is wonderful. Now, one thing that goes into the dining and something that you can do is having what's kind of synonymous with birthdays.

Kris Johns:

Cake.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Yes. So you have a lot of different options for cakes. So number one if you're at a Disney resort, you can have a cake delivered to one of the dining locations. You have a couple of different options. Now when you make a reservation, you can just do for any of the table service restaurants. It will allow you to do a Mickey celebration cake. It's kind of a basic design but if you're wanting something basic and simple, it's still as Mickey. It's still a lot of fun to be able to do that. It's just called a celebration cake and it lets you do it right on the website.

Vanessa Ferguson:

And the nice thing with those is usually you can get same day ordering on those, which is great because if you maybe have a last minute trip or you haven't had some time to plan that out ahead of time, another thing you can do is you can order ahead of time from a couple of the different bakeries on property. So there's a cake ordering hotline. I will say in the whole planet my favorite food, I have to say, is probably cake. So the fact that there's a cake ordering hotline just melts my heart and I've actually called that hotline before and we had Kris' birthday cake made by them. A few years ago, with Olaf on it, we had a replica of our in. This wasn't a birthday but a replica of the top tier of our wedding cake and we had that made and delivered to a restaurant. So I'll put the cake ordering hotline number in the show notes. I'm going to give it here. I know most people are just going to go to show notes, but it's 407-827-2253.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Another thing you can do is the Emirates Petitie in Disney Springs. They have a cake line and you can, with 48 hours notice. They do character inspired dome cakes and they have like a signature Mickey cake you can get as well. And if you have people who need a vegan cake or gluten free, the Aaron McKenna's Bakery at Disney Springs will do it. But what? And the nice thing is that they'll also deliver to the table service restaurants and I will say a great option. We talk to so many amazing vendors and if you have some time and you're able to book it in advance, I highly highly recommend Storybook Delights. We had Ashley from there on episode 101, which I'll put the link in the show notes. She made our daughter's birthday cake last year which was a little mermaid design, so cute and so delicious it was chocolate and peanut butter.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Delicious yes it was really really good, way better than any of we were at Chef Mickey's way better than any of the desserts that we got there. And the nice thing was is that our friend that was with us she is on a gluten free diet they made gluten free cupcakes, which were delicious as well, and they designed them and had them look and have a same feel as the regular cake, so it's perfect. She has lots of other goodies that you can have delivered. If you don't want a cake, you can have treat boxes. I know we're getting a treat box from them for upcoming trip with the Halloween theme, but definitely check out Storybook Delights. They can't deliver right to the restaurant.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So what we did is we were eating at Chef Mickey's. We had it delivered to our resort we were staying at Art of Animation Went back to the resort it was in the. There's like a cooler storage that they have at the front and they had it already there waiting for us. We picked it up and we took it to the restaurant. So that's always an option, which is really great. Now, second to food, I would say the next thing that is most important in our, in our realm, is photos. We take a lot of photos.

Kris Johns:

We sure do a lot.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So if you've paid for the memory maker, if you're an annual pass holder, you just added that to your package. The great thing is you can get so many wonderful pictures all over the parks and for our daughter's fifth birthday we had our matching shirts. We went all over Magic Kingdom got photos. There's also at right near it's by Sir Mickey's. Right behind the castle there is a place that you can go and you can have photos done there.

Vanessa Ferguson:

One of the fun things is that it's called. You can have a reservation where you pay for what's called capturing your moment session, where it's a 20 minute session and they'll go around take photos. But you can also just stop by there. So that when our daughter's birthday we just stopped at Sir Mickey's and there happened to be a photo pass photographer in there. We went in, got some cute pictures of our daughter with her shirt on. So lots of fun. Get photos all over the park, wherever you are at that day for your birthday. And I will also say we've not had him on the show, but we have an amazing photographer that we use all the time at Disney. Who is our photographer?

Kris Johns:

Randy.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Yeah. So Randy Chapman of Chapman Photography. He primarily does wedding photos, but he does family shoots, all kinds of things. So for our daughter's fifth birthday, we had him come and take pictures at. We are seeing at Art of Animation because she loves Little Mermaid, so we are seeing in a Little Mermaid room. We had him come and do a family shoot there. I'm actually looking at some of the pictures from there hanging up in our office. So look at some. There's some amazing vendors that can take photos, but we highly recommend Chapman Photography I'll put his link in the show notes as well and he has all kinds of great locations. He can take you around the property to get photos.

Vanessa Ferguson:

I also say that it's worthwhile taking some time to go buy yourself a special gift. So whether you are someone who collects certain things maybe it's something from, maybe you just like spirit jerseys or lounge fly bags or you want a new set of ears I think a birthday is a great way to go out and celebrate and go to a special shop, get something engraved, something unique, and that's also something that you'll be able to remember that day for for a long time. Besides going and getting yourself something great, it's also fun to have some things done for someone else in your group that may be celebrating. So if you are celebrating a special occasion for yourself or someone else in your party, definitely look at having some door decorations done, or in room celebrations, and we had a while back we had Michelle from Enchanted Dreams Boutique, and that was in episode 128, which I'll put that in the show notes as well. She does decorated doors.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So what you can do is you can surprise your somebody in your party when you come home from the parks. Have the door decorated with their favorite characters, maybe just marking that milestone birthday. We've had that done. We actually had that done on a past trip. It was right in between my mom and my dad's birthday, so I kind of had it done for both of them. So much fun, such a big surprise. I forgot, though, that it was being done that day, and they went ahead to the room before us. If I would have been better prepared, like I would have when in videoed, but it totally slipped my mind Can't think of everything.

Kris Johns:

No, it was a busy trip.

Vanessa Ferguson:

So, anyways, check out Michelle. She also does some in room decor, so if you want, there's ways that you can set up with her where she would come in and decorate with Mickey or have whatever you want set up for you when you come back from the parks. So that's a super fun thing to do. One thing that is a lot of fun that I've heard people talk about is that Animal Kingdom you can do the nature theme challenges where you do the wilderness explorer and you collect pets. You can do the outdoor and you collect badges around the park. I think that would be super fun for kids or even adults. If you're at Animal Kingdom on their birthday, it's a great way to check it out. We are having a guest in a couple of shows who does some really fun scavenger hunts at the parks as well as at at the resort, so you could look up some of the options she has as well. But honestly, I mean Kris isn't even a huge Disney person, but I think your birthday at Disney is still fun.

Kris Johns:

Oh, definitely wonderful. Great people, great restaurant, just a wonderful memory.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Yes. So those are some things to consider if you are planning your birthday or really any celebration at Disney. We talk about all of those different options, but there's even lots more, from backstage tours to really doing something special like a carriage ride or a boat rental We've done actually, for my aunt's birthday as well, we did one of the pontoon rentals where you get the special viewing of the fireworks. There's just the possibilities, or endless. So many fun things you can do, from a more laid back experience at a resort to maybe a jam packed day at the parks. You really have a lot of great options and you can spread out the birthday fund for more than one day as well. So think about planning a Disney birthday celebration, in particular, if it's not in the hottest months, like my birthday. So take some time, think about what you may want to do and whether it's for an adult or a child, you'll all have a great day on your birthday. So give us a minute.

Vanessa Ferguson:

We're going to get our call up with Rachel and hopefully, for your birthday celebration, you can get some of her awesome gift baskets to mark the occasion as well. We'd like to welcome Rachel to the show. Her shop, strange Magic Gifts provides all kinds of really fun gift baskets, from custom designs to kind of like ready to go designs. She is a corgi mom, a redhead, a Disney fanatic and a cosplayer. She recently moved to Orlando to pursue her dreams while also kind of healing her inner child. After some struggle she had had, she started her business and she's just really hella pee to be a part of the Disney community. So welcome to the show, rachel.

Speaker 3:

Hi, thank you so much for having me. This is my first podcast, so I just feel so honored.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Awesome. Well, we're excited to have you on the show. It's always fun to see all the unique things that people come up with for their businesses. Now we start off by finding out a little bit about what you enjoy at the park. So lately we've been asking people what is your favorite character to meet at the parks or at a like a character dining? What's your favorite character?

Speaker 3:

You know, I get really shy meeting them.

Kris Johns:

I just feel like I'm meeting a celebrity or something.

Speaker 3:

I often watch from a distance, but who I really love to watch are the evil step sisters from Cinderella. Oh yes, they, they're so funny. I just feel like they make everyone laugh and they're kind of sassy, you know. I just I think they're hilarious.

Vanessa Ferguson:

I know we've been waiting for 1900 Park Fair to open back up because we had a really great time with them there with our daughter a couple of years ago, right before covid. So yes, I agree, they're always a lot of fun for sure.

Speaker 3:

They're super funny. And then, of course, winning the poo and stitch. They're just fun, cuddly creatures that I can hug, and it's no pressure at all.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Right, exactly, and that's a fun thing. I think the characters do a good job about making you comfortable, whether you're you're an adult who's nervous, or I've seen kids that were shy, and they're just always so great about helping people open up, for sure.

Speaker 3:

Absolutely, absolutely.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Now we have you here to learn more about your business and what is the services that you offer connected to Disney.

Speaker 3:

So I deliver gift baskets and gift boxes to Disney World and Universal Resorts. I work with a lot of travel agents and Disney guests to surprise their loved ones with something customized especially for them.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Now, one of the things that I think is fun is the variety of things that you offer. Could you maybe give us some description of a couple of the baskets that you offer?

Speaker 3:

Sure. So I have a lot of customizable Disney baskets so people can tell me their favorite characters, their favorite movie or color and I'll really work to customize something special for them. And I have a lot of different price ranges for all people. And then I also have some like coffee lover baskets. I have a quick grocery run basket for people to, you know, make quick PB and J sandwiches for the parks and snacks and water. I have lots of different options kind of for everyone, whether it's, you know, a Disney dad who needs some extra coffee or a little girl who loves pink.

Speaker 3:

You know everything in between.

Kris Johns:

That's awesome. What was your inspiration to start the business?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so whenever I have my family or friends here, I usually help them with finding, you know, their favorite Disney ears that they need for the next day, or stalking their fridge before they get there, and they're always telling me you know, you should make this a business, you need to do this. And I didn't realize that people actually did this, and so I got really excited and it just emerged into doing gift baskets, gift boxes, and it just emerged into this really beautiful business that I've, you know, been a part of in this community so far.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Now have you had your business very long.

Speaker 3:

I haven't. I've been up about a month and a half now. I'm very new.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Well, that's awesome, and it's been so fun seeing some of the different guests that we've had at different parts in their journey, because I know when we will talk to you six months from now or a year from now, it'll be so neat to see all the growth and all the new things that you're offering, as you see what customers need and want.

Speaker 3:

Absolutely, and I'm just learning new things every day and trying new things, meeting new people. It's so much fun. I just it feels like so much time has passed in this short month. I feel like I've done so much.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Now you've talked about all of the great baskets and boxes that you offer. How do you think that these offer Disney magic into your customers' lives?

Speaker 3:

So I think receiving a customized gift from someone just makes you feel so special and loved and I really try to focus on making that extra customized. You know, whether it's their favorite color, like I said, or character adding in special notes. I can really do whatever anyone needs and I just feel like adding some magic to people's lives. Whether it's through a travel agent thanking their clients for, you know, using their services, or you're trying to surprise a family member for their really big vacation that they saved so much money for, I just really think it makes people feel so special and so loved to receive something like that.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Now if I were wanting to order a basket from you, how does that process work? How early do I need to place an order?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so the website is super easy. When you go in you can choose who it's to, who it's from, what you want your message to say. You can write any favorite characters, colors, what they like, what they don't like, and then you can pick a delivery date. You know I can squeeze in last-minute orders as needed. You can always email, but the ideal amount of time I would say is about two weeks before your vacation. Obviously, for holidays the sooner the better. But I have my calendar open up all year. So if you have a vacation five months down the line and you want to plan something, you can order it now.

Vanessa Ferguson:

And with that I know we've talked a little bit about how the delivery works. Where do you deliver to and like? What are the costs for that?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so I have a free delivery for the Disney World Resorts and the Disney Springs Resorts and then I offer delivery to Universal and all the surrounding areas, even some vacation homes, airbnbs, etc. But what I do is I deliver to the front desk and I deliver the day before you check in, so it'll be waiting for you when you check in. Sometimes you know certain resorts. They might run it to your room, but at that point it's in Disney's hands and I just deliver to the front desk.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Now I think this is also a perfect timing because I'm not sure if you're familiar or our listeners are familiar, but Disney floral used to offer like you could get things delivered to the rooms, like chocolates or different things, and Disney floral was recently. Disney kind of did away with that department. So it's nice to be able to have this option where and you offer something that's so much more customized than what they had for sure. Now I know you have like different containers. I thought it was fun. You have one that you can get where it's in the popcorn bucket and you tell people what is that? What does it mean by having it in the popcorn bucket?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so we have the refillable popcorn bucket, so any refills that you use in the parks for popcorn. I believe it's two twenty five, so it's a really nice way for people to get their loved ones popcorn or the little kids snack, and I fill it either with Disney snacks so Disney candy, Disney popcorn or I fill it with more affordable snacks like chips and candies and granola bars.

Vanessa Ferguson:

And what is your favorite basket that you've done so far? Do you have a certain theme that you enjoy?

Speaker 3:

I recently did one for a little girl who was turning eight and her favorite was Rapunzel, and so I did. I found those lanterns from the movie with the sun on it oh fun, I put, yeah, I put a little flameless candle in there. I found her Rapunzel's crown. I had a little birthday sash Pascal, some stickers, some temporary tattoos, some candies just a really fun Birthday present, which, just you know, portrays the movie so well because it's her birthday. For the lanterns, I think that's my favorite. I also recently did a really big Moana Polynesian theme and so I stacked I had those gift boxes that you can stack where it's kind of tiered, oh yeah and yeah and I added some tropical leaves on the sides and I added Pua on top, and they loved it. It was super cute. Now, real quick, because you've talked about all these custom options are people able to?

Vanessa Ferguson:

do like a price range. Do you offer a wide range? Do they kind of set that budget with you? Yeah, they do, so I can basically work with any budget.

Speaker 3:

I would say, you know, most people want to work around 50 to 100. Some people really want to go all out, like the Moana was, I think, 300. Sure, and just really wow they're. You know they're family members, but yeah any budget. Really, I have so many different options for people. That's great. Now you mentioned all these awesome options. Where can people go?

Kris Johns:

online to find out more.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so I'm on Instagram as Strange Magic Gifts and on TikTok and Facebook as well, also as Strange Magic Gifts, and my website is strangemagicgiftscom. Perfect, and I will make sure that you guys are all ready to go.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Speaker 3:

Vanessa Ferguson:

Speaker 3:

Of course, thank you for having me again. It's my first podcast. This is super fun and I just feel honored that you guys wanted to interview me, and it really helps small businesses, so I really appreciate it.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Well, we appreciate all of you. We couldn't do it without all of our wonderful guests.

Kris Johns:

Thank you again to Rachel for joining us today.

Vanessa Ferguson:

And now we have our two minute trivia and our wisdom from Walt Quote and Kris you are up with trivia. So today's theme is birthdays. Yes.

Kris Johns:

Mickey Mouse was the first animated character to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Which birthday did he receive his star in the Walk of Fame?

Vanessa Ferguson:

Like whose birthday?

Kris Johns:

Mickey Mouse's birthday when he became the first animated character to receive a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Which birthday was it?

Vanessa Ferguson:

Oh, oh, oh, I see, can I ask a clarifying question?

Kris Johns:

Yes.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Was Walt Disney still alive?

Kris Johns:

Doubtful.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Then I'm gonna go with maybe his 50th birthday you are right. Oh, that was a random guess.

Kris Johns:

And that's a random question, but yes, mickey Mouse was the first animated character and this is according to the web internet to get a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It happened on his 50th birthday.

Vanessa Ferguson:

I actually thought you were gonna ask me when Mickey Mouse's birthday is.

Kris Johns:

I didn't find that on the internet.

Vanessa Ferguson:

I believe it's November 18th or 19th, because I've been there before.

Kris Johns:

That is correct.

Vanessa Ferguson:

Is it the 18th?

Kris Johns:

November 18th Wow.

Vanessa Ferguson:

I've been there before 1928. I don't remember why I was there in November, but I've been there on Mickey's birthday and they sometimes will sell shirts or something special. Awesome, very interesting. So let's go ahead and end out. I think just this one is just talking about dreams and how you really want to look towards keeping those alive, and I think that's what birthdays are. It's about looking towards hope for the next year and all the things that might lie ahead in life. So this is a great quote to end us out. Laughter is timeless. Imagination has no age, dreams are forever, and is that not true? And, of course, all your dreams can come true at Disney World. At least that's what they are saying. So don't forget to check out our other episodes on our Buzzsprout page and, of course, follow us on social media for even more updates.
