Now before we get to our interview with Kristi, we are going to be talking about the best Disney resorts to stay with for families. Now one thing we want to mention before we get started is that there are lots of great options for families off property too. And we know that depending on your family's budget, or even the size of your family, seeing a Walt Disney World Resort might not work for you and your family. For instance, like Kris mentioned, larger families could benefit from running houses like the pool houses or the mcmansions. At Orlando vacation calm. We have friends that have you mentioned one of our friends who have a larger family and when they go down, they always run a house because for them just makes sense to have a little bit extra space. So with that caveat, we're going to talk about what we think are the best Disney resorts if you do have the opportunity to be able to stay on property. Now we are going to kind of I wouldn't say these are in any rank order I we have options from both the value resorts, the moderate and then also we picked one that is one of the deluxe resorts. So to start off, we've only went on one Disney trip with our daughter so far. Just one yes. So I'm starting with the resort we stayed with her because this is also ranked by many other people as well as a great option for families and that resort is the pop century resort. Now in the past, it probably wouldn't have been on our our list just because it is a little bit further out. But one of the things that is great, really for anybody but especially for families is that access to the skyliner I think that was something we really loved a lot We sure did. Now, why is this important for families? What is something that is a big hassle on Disney transportation when you have small kids Criss getting around? Well and like oh, strollers Yeah, strollers. So one of the advantages of being on a skyliner Resort is that you can just wheel on and wheel off. And this also applies. We've traveled with friends with disabilities or family members who are older and they have to have like mobility devices, whether it be scooters or wheelchairs. And this is also a great aspect not just for people with kids in strollers, but also individuals who have those transportation devices as well. So it's really great because it's on the skyliner it has affordable pricing. There's fun theming where even if your kids don't know what all the things are in the 60s section or different things, it's just fun and bright, and kids will enjoy walking around there's different pools within the sections which is nice. The food court is decent has an wider range of food and different options and The it's just a fun overall atmosphere and vibe for families. And I think even adults will enjoy it too. But it's just a great option for families that's in that more affordable price range. Now staying in that same area, we're going to talk about the Art of Animation resort. Now, people could argue this is listed. It's technically a value, but really moderate pricing. We will be seeing there next year what we're at why are we saying at Art of Animation resort next year? Because Ariel? Yeah, so our daughter loves the little mermaid and we are going down for her fifth birthday next year. So we are seeing in one of the Little Mermaid rooms at Art of Animation and that's really what the draw is for families is they have extremely themed rooms. They have ones that are for the Pixar movie, so they have cars rooms they have finding new Nemo rooms and they have Lion King. And also Little Mermaid now Little Mermaid are the only standard rooms they are in terms of regular size. They do also have some suites, which are really, really awesome. And honestly, if they had little mermaid themed suites, we would have been staying in those but because their daughter lives Little Mermaid and it's her birthday. We are not sitting in one of the suites. My parents are traveling with us and we have two adjoining rooms. So what are the suites like the suites are nice because number one, if you have a large family or if you have multiple generations traveling to gather, it has two bathrooms, which we know two bathrooms is always great when you're traveling, when you agree on that crusher is Yeah, so you have two bathrooms. And then you have a bedroom that has a queen size bed. There's one double size bed that converts then there's also a sleeper sofa in the living room. You have the two bathrooms and a kitchenette. So in total, they say that you can sleep six people in the suites. And as I mentioned, the suites are cars, Nemo and Lion King themed. So that is really awesome. Here's something that's a fun fact. Art of Animation has. Well here. I'll give you this trivia Kris. Thinking about like, amenities at resorts. What do you think is something that Art of Animation could have the largest of a pool? Yeah, they

have the largest you gotta write, they're the largest pool, resort pool on property. And so it's fun. It has a splash area for little kids, which is great, we're talking about families being able to they have a playground adjacent to it as well. So it's really nice. And when you're looking at pricing. Here's where this comes into play I just priced for, we're recording this. And this is for August of 2021. I looked at the week that we are going in April of 2022. And those, those themed suites are running around 510 to 560. So when you think about it's about the equivalent of two rooms, that makes sense, it's not really a huge savings. But it is nice for the fact that you get the extra space and you don't have to have two rooms. And I know for our little mermaid room that we're staying there, it's about half the price. So it's not really a cost savings. You're just having everything that convenience of it in one space and you do get the kitchenette versus when you have two adjoining rooms you're not going to have that and again because it is across from pop century What if we just talk about with pop century why it's so great because of the skyline? Exactly, yeah, so you'll hear a theme throughout several of these resorts skyline or skyline or skyline or it's really awesome when you have small kids. Now we're going to flip to the moderate resorts now. Now we're going to look at what is my favorite resort Kris at Disney property that we've stayed at the most the New Orleans one because port Orleans Riverside Yes. Port Orleans Riverside is my favorite. I think you like Porter lane so yeah, it's a nice place. Yeah. So one of the nice things there that is really awesome for families is they have royal guestrooms and we've stayed in these twice we stayed in them one year for our anniversary and then one year when we were there for our vow renewal we did stay in a royal room might ask well what is a Braille room? They are princess themed rooms they have had boards that you push a button and fireworks go off similar to at like the Disneyland Hotel in California. There's little like Princess and the Frog touches in the room. There's just fun theming throughout Do you remember saying in the world Sure do. Yes you do remember those fireworks? Yeah. So that it was really fun when we were there getting ready for our vow renewal on our photographer was there just added a little bit extra. So if you have kids that really love that kind of Princess and fun theme, you will enjoy these rooms. And the nice thing is here is they do have a lot of pools as well. That's why even as adults we've enjoyed this resort because there's pools nestled between the smaller buildings and And then for families or if you just want to go enjoy, there's what's called Old Man Island. And that's where they have a huge pool with some slides. They have just a fun area that kids will really enjoy. So if you're a family that likes to go back to the resort, and enjoy an afternoon swim, you can they also have bike rentals. They're one of the resorts, which several of these resorts were in talk about, do they like movies under the stars program, which if you're not familiar with that, what will happen is and certain evenings, they will do a big blow up screen and they do a movie outside and Kris used to run a movie program and are I sure Disney films

Kris Johns  10:38
Yeah, we always did we show Disney movies. So that's kind of a nice thing.

Vanessa Ferguson  10:42
And one thing that we enjoy at Port Orleans, you are going to be on bus transportation for everything except for Disney Springs. They have a boat that takes you down to Disney Springs. And there's a couple of things that I find helpful about that if you have small kids. Now, we've never had any kids with us like personally, we've stayed at Porter lanes, but we've been traveling with other people that have had kids that have stayed there with us. And one of the things that's nice is most people are going to go to down to Disney Springs in the evening, maybe after you've done a park for a day or something. The nice thing by doing the boats is you don't have to wait in those long lines for the buses. The boats are a little bit off from the main area where the other transportation is if you have kids that are tired at the end of the night, it's really easy to get out of there. It's nice quiet. I mean that boat ride when you go to Disney Springs, you really don't feel like you're in the hustle and bustle. So it's very quiet goes through a wooded area. So if you have little ones that are tired, they can fall asleep. They can be in their stroller, you can take them right back to the room, and they can crash. So that's really nice, especially if you know you want to go do dining and shopping in the evenings. That's a great addition. With Porter staying at Port Orleans, Riverside, and they are opening back that resort again in October. It's right after we go for the 15th. So we're a little bummed about that. But you will be able to start booking and staying there for October.

Now similarly designed rooms but with just a different theme are over at Caribbean Beach Resort. They have pirate themed rooms, which I think that's kind of fun. It is neat. Yeah. So the rooms are just like with the Royal rooms. They follow the same. They follow a theme throughout so the beds look like boats, and like the curtain that you pull by the sinks has the Pirates of the Caribbean skull on it. And just fun little things like that. Some people will say like, if you read some reviews, we've not stayed there. But some people go well, it's not worth the extra cost. Well, when I priced it out, it really wasn't that much more than one of the regular rooms at Caribbean beach. So personally, I think if you have kids that enjoy pirates go the extra mile and stay in though in those pirate themed rooms. I think that it would be worth it. Yeah. Need experience. Yeah. And another thing is Guess what? What? What's the theme that's been with these most these resorts for families on the skyline?

Kris Johns  13:10
I don't know. It's on the skyline. Oh, Thomas. Physically on the skyline. What was what graphic was on your mind, Vanessa? I mean, it's no,

Vanessa Ferguson  13:22
no, no, no. Caribbean beach is one of the stops on the skyliner. And here's a great thing about that. Not only is it a stop, but it's also the hub where that the station is where you have to switch if you're going to Epcot or to Hollywood Studios. So in essence, you can just if you're staying there, you just go straight to Hollywood Studios or straight to Epcot, you don't have to stop and change change tracks. So that is a really great thing and something about the pirate rooms that I've read is they are located near the skyliner station which is really great. People say that the bad thing normally is that they're the pirate rooms are about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the main building where you have the food core and the shop and all that. But here's the plus side. If you're one like us, we don't really spend a lot of time in our resorts know if you're like us and you're out doing things. The pirate rooms are great because you're right by the skyline or you get back to your room you crash if you're somebody who stays at the resort a lot. You might not want to do the pirate room because you are going to be further away from the food court in some of those other amenities there. So though that's another great moderate resort option at Caribbean beach. Now we're going to move to more expensive resort looking at one of the ones that is a Magic Kingdom resort looking at one that is on the monorail and that is at the Polynesian resort and then newly refurbished marijuana rooms which I think our daughter would enjoy the marijuana room. Oh definitely Yeah,

so if you have any little ones like our daughter who likes marijuana, the Polynesian just recently refurbished after they had had the long closure during COVID they push back the opening date because they did the marijuana refurbishment. And from what I can tell these are the rooms that are in the main ceremonial house. And they are really awesome looking. They have just fun touches when mohana and Hey, hey, and Maui, and even in the hallway, there's theming and the so it's just fun from the sconces to on the wallpaper to just pick artwork on the walls, just a lot of fun things that are mohana theme. So if you have a little one that is really into marijuana, this is a great option. But also, if you know your family is going to spend a lot of time at the Magic Kingdom. You're right on the monorail. You also can go over to transportation ticket center with the monorail to Epcot, of course we've had some closures with that. But typically you would be able to do that. Another plus is if you have a little bit larger family, they cap where they're still the two beds plus the day bed which can be converted in the day beds a little bit bigger than I forgot to mention it quarterly and say have a trundle bed in some of those rooms. And these are a little bit bigger. I know I've traveled with my friend and her family many years ago, and I've slept on the day beds, it's a decent size for an adult to even sleep on as well. And these mohana rooms just reopened in July 2021. So that's really awesome. You have Magic Kingdom view, you can go out watch the fireworks, lots of different fun things. So check out the Polynesian is another great option for families if you're looking for a more Deluxe resort. And one other resort that we didn't mention earlier that I wouldn't put it as my top one for families. But if you're looking for a little bit even more value to in terms of what you're able to afford, it's not going to be on the skyliner and it's not going to have some of those other amenities we talked about other resorts but the all star movies resort is a great option if your family can can only manage to stay at one of the All Stars. One of the all star resorts and we've actually stayed here we were we stayed at the all star movies. Actually I think it's only been two years ago in 2019. We stayed there before our Disney Cruise. Do you remember saying these and the nice thing about that is they have the big themed areas for different movies of course that your kids might enjoy. Most little ones will enjoy there's a toy story section which is really fun. And the great thing there's like the 100 mom donations it's really fun because those are things that kids are going to enjoy looking at and going at outside to enjoy. One of the things that people recommend is to get a preferred room when you're there. Not only are you to be closer to the main area but that's also part of the preferred rooms are the Toy Story section which is fun. They're all of those newly remodeled rooms which is great with laminate flooring. The raised beds the extra shelving, to me the room look very similar, if not identical to pop century I thought it is very similar. The food court was good they had some different options at all star movie. So if your family is looking at the All Stars, I would definitely suggest All Star movies it's a great option and it gives you a little bit more affordable choice as well for your family. Now I did put as a runner up it doesn't have the theming but it does have some amenities and things depending on how your family vacations. Looking at Fort wilderness, the cabins at Fort wilderness are nice because they are larger, they provide a lot more sleeping space. They have all of the activities at Fort wilderness that you can enjoy from archery, to doing the campfires to there's great food at trails and you can take the boat over to Magic Kingdom. There's just a lot of fun things for kids to do at Fort wilderness especially if your family travels to Disney a lot. gives you a nice change of pace and a little bit more quiet environment when you go back to the cabins. The only downside I will say is I have stayed at the cabins with my family and when I've taken a friend before is there is only one bathroom which when you're looking at a larger space, but you do have the foil kitchen so you have that option if you're a family that enjoys cooking as well. So those are some things to consider. But that's kind of a runner up for us for families. So hopefully this gives you a lot of great options if you're considering staying at on Disney property for your next Disney vacation and you have some small kids in your in your traveling party or in your immediate family. This gives you some ideas of the best choices and best options for you on property. So we are looking forward to getting Kristi interview up and having her tell you all about favorite deputy. We would like to welcome Kristi Woody to the show. Her shop favorite deputy offers really cool shirts and patches and pins. And one of the unique things about her shop is that she gives a portion of the proceeds from every sale to give kids a world which we'll have her talk about that a little bit later. She's a university photographer by trade. And she also does photography on the side as well as, of course, having her business. And she got started as a person who really loves Disney when she went there on her honeymoon. And of course, as we all know, once you go and you start going, you want to keep going back. So she is married, and she has a two and a half year old daughter, and we are really excited to have Kristi on the show. Hi, thanks for having me. Now, before

we get into all the details about your shop, we want to hear about what you enjoy at Disney. So our question that we've been asking people recently is what is your favorite Disney Resort? Or if you haven't stayed on property yet? Where would you like to stay?

Kristi Woody  20:54
Okay, this is a really hard one for me, because I like a lot of different resorts for different reasons. Sure. I had to pick an overall favorite. I would say the Polynesian because we we love the atmosphere there. And we only stayed in the DVC room, but we loved the room and just, it just has everything. Yeah, something we can do often. But if we're gonna splurge, that's probably what we're gonna go, for sure. And we like

Vanessa Ferguson  21:21
those DVC like the studios are so nice with the extra shower. We've stayed there before. And of course, we love ohana, and some of the restaurants at the poly as well, which is always nice. Oh, yes. Now, I said a little bit about your business. But if you could tell us more about your business, and what are the products you offer connected to Disney?

Kristi Woody  21:43
Yeah. So I have a it's mainly t shirts. But then I also have a few pins and patches. I try to keep everything park space, because that's kind of my main love for Disney. Yeah, and so all the designs are parks based. And I like simple. I know a lot of like the big Disney stuff is, you know, like these really cool illustrations and stuff, which I like those too. But when I started my shop, I was kind of looking for really simple stuff. And so that's kind of the direction I went. So yeah, and all of my T shirts are $8 goes to give kids the world village and then tanks are six and then it just kind of goes down a little bit from there. T shirts are definitely like the biggest donation amount sure them. And yeah, and that's really the main reason I started the shop is because I wanted to raise money for gifts, get to the world and then also have kind of a little hobby, a creative outlet. Because like he said, I'm a photographer in my everyday life. And so doing a creative job. I still need a creative outlet. So the shirt shop kind of became that for me and also became a way for me to fundraise. So hopefully that answers that question. That was the rambley

Kris Johns  23:04
Sure. Didn't you mention, you know, you discussed how you What led you to start the business? I'd like to switch gears and say, where do you find inspiration for your products?

Kristi Woody  23:13
usually just in the parks? The first design I did was an orange was not the first Yes, that was the first was an orange bird. And because I love orange bird and I really at that time, there wasn't a lot of orange bird stuff. And now there's a ton of it. So I'm kind of in the in the masses. But then from there, the two finger make key point was the next design that is so in Yeah, just walking around the parks. When I go on a trip, sometimes I'll get an idea and I'll write it down and then it might come to fruition it might not but that's usually where I get my ideas.

Vanessa Ferguson  23:54
So you have like your shirts that you mentioned, what are some of the designs that are on your patches or your pins.

Kristi Woody  24:01
A lot of them are the same just kind of adapted. There's let's see, one of the patches I have is a haunted mansion. It just says like foolish mortal and has the wallpaper and actually made that patch just to go on a pocket t that was hard to imagine themed. And I've kind of phased out the pocket t but kept the patch because it's actually been one of my most popular items. Oh, yeah, it's I was surprised. I didn't know that so many people like the patches that they do. Very cool.

Vanessa Ferguson  24:33
Now you've talked some about your inspiration in that but we always like to find out how do you think your products can add Disney magic to our listeners lives?

Kristi Woody  24:43
Well, obviously wearing the shirts to the parks is a big way that my shop can contribute to their daily magical lives. But I really think because my shirts are so simple. Like the designs are not super in your face. They can really be worn anywhere. I have a friend who bless her. She's like my biggest fan. She's so sweet. She buys like every shirt that I come out with. And she does, she wears them around town. And she's like, I never feel like screening Disney. You know, they're just, they're nice shirts to kind of give a subtle nod to something that I care about.

Vanessa Ferguson  25:21
And that's something that Kris has mentioned, because I would say I'm probably the biggest Disney fan and between the two of us in terms of Sure, I would bear the bigger designs and things like that. But Kris has always said that, that's one of the things he looks for so subtle designs, where it's not, not everybody's gonna know it's Disney when they see it.

Kris Johns  25:41
Yeah, I just like, I wish it was just a little more minimalism in the park. But then the same way. That's why I love Disney creators is because there's so much variety, and there's things that are a bit more subtle, where it's almost kind of an inside joke, where it's a quality design, and it looks cool, first, to the layman. And it doesn't necessarily scream Disney per se. But to the insider, they know what there's a message to and that's what I love about especially if you don't work like the pixelated orange bird, it's just you taking care, that classic design and doing something, I don't want to know if it's necessarily retro or modern, per se, but you're doing something different with it. And it just looks cool, let alone being kind of that Disney icon. It's been in the park for so many years.

Kristi Woody  26:20
Yeah, well, thanks. I appreciate it. And yeah, that's kind of that's the direction that I like to go with, you know, when I'm picking out clothes to wear to the parks. And I mean, I love having variety. I think there's definitely a place for all of us that are creating Disney products. There's somebody out there that wants what we're making, right now,

Vanessa Ferguson  26:41
because your shop is so unique, I would like to just talk a little bit about, like, what was your inspiration about having a portion of those proceeds go to give kids the world and I know there's probably some of our listeners that aren't familiar with them. I know we fly into Sanford airport, and that's where all the families come through. So we always see the, like the people waiting to take them to the resort. But could you explain a little bit about that as well?

Kristi Woody  27:05
Yeah, well, the main inspiration was because my boss at the University where I work, his son was diagnosed with leukemia, I believe he was about six. And so he went through a couple of years of treatment. And then he chose Disney as his microwave, or, you know, Central Florida for his Make a wish trip. And so they stayed to give kids the world. And they just raved about it. They loved it. They You know, he, my boss told me a lot about it after they got back. So I was like, really interested in checking it out. And then I volunteered a couple of times. And I just I don't know, I just fell in love with it. And I wish I wish I could do more. You know, like, I would love to grow the shop to where I could donate, like a huge amount every quarter. But I love knowing that even a little bit is going to them but give kids the world is I'm going to just read their description from their website. It is an 89 acre nonprofit storybook resort in Central Florida. Here, children with critical illnesses and their families are treated to a week long, cost free vacation. So they get tickets to all the theme parks around there. The resort itself is just really cool. It's almost like just as good as going to Disney. rods. Yeah, it's great. It's just a really neat place, I'd definitely encourage anybody that lives around there that hasn't been to try to volunteer at least a couple of times just to get the experience maybe once things have settled down a little bit with the pandemic, right,

Vanessa Ferguson  28:40
right for sure. Now, with all of your great products that you give the portion of the proceeds, how long like if I wanted to buy a shirt for a trip or as a gift or something what's your turnaround time? If I remembered or something

Kristi Woody  28:55
I keep everything like in stock that's on my website. So if it's listed on my website, I had it at my house to ship to you so it's gonna go out within a day or two. And that's I mean as of taping this that's there's always you know, chance I will change that in the future. right but because I like to print the one color designs I print myself because it that's part of the creative outlet part of it that I you know, screen printed myself. It's just the multicolor designs that I have to get made for me. Yeah, but I like to go ahead and print them and then list them so that I'm not like scrambling, ready having a toddler I'm like, you never know. I'm I get an order and then right on time, so

Kris Johns  29:44
a little orange bird told me that you might have a promo code for us.

Unknown Speaker  29:48
I do. Yes. So 15% off and you can use this on my Etsy shop which is favorite deputy or on my website which is hybrid epi.com I mean, it's dislove di s lov  e15. So you'll get 15% off, and I'm just gonna leave it up. So listeners, if you're listening to this two years in the future should still be there. But yeah, so I kept my Etsy shop, because if anybody that's listening to this that's got any experience with e commerce, Etsy kind of like, brings you traffic, sure, from their search engine. So I wanted to leave some things on Etsy, but I started my own website at the beginning of this year,

Kris Johns  30:32
would you explain the origin of your business name, I think it's just in a very unique.

Kristi Woody  30:37
Yeah. So favorite deputy is tied to my last name, which is Woody. Of course, that's from Toy Story. And I just wanted it I wanted my business name to be something kind of personal, but also like the old Disney. And that just stuck with me when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to name it. And then my sweet friend Katie, who also has a small shop souvenir WW. She designed my logo and did all my branding for me. And she's amazing. So yeah, that's kind of where it came from. And I have a little little girl and sometimes I call her my favorite deputy. So

Vanessa Ferguson  31:16

And now we are on to our two minute trivia wisdom from Hawk quote. Kris, you are up with trivia.

Kris Johns  32:11
Okay, Vanessa. Yeah, I found this to be amazing. Okay. Oprah Winfrey. Voice the character in a Disney animated film. What animated film was it? It has a connection to one of the resorts that you mentioned tonight. I mean, at least theme wise.

Vanessa Ferguson  32:32
Okay. Probably. Princess in the frog. How'd you get that? Well, theme was Oprah only movies. I talked about that. I think she would she wasn't in Toy Story. No isn't in Little Mermaid. No. Well, you're good. Yeah. You just cracked Oprah Winfrey, which she thought Oh, what was the lady's name? Eudora. She

was Tiana's mother. Oh, wow. Oh, I

Vanessa Ferguson  32:56
wouldn't know. You see, you should ask me what character she played. Because I was thinking she was the one older like lady that did the singing and stuff. But I guess Oprah doesn't really sink. So Wow. Wow. That's you. She asked me the second part. I definitely wouldn't gotten that. All right, great. Now, of course, we're going to end with our Walt quote. I thought this one was kind of interesting, because it's just talking about kids and imagination and bringing, like making sure that you include kids and things and don't kind of exclude them from things. Adults are interested if you don't play down to the little two or three year olds or talk down. I don't believe in talking down to children. I don't believe in talking down to any certain segment. I like to kind of just talk in a general way to the audience. Children are always reaching. And that's what it is helping them reach and grow and expand their imagination. And that's what Disney and traveling with your family is all about. So thank you so much for joining us on this episode of The Dislove podcast with Vanessa and Kris. I'm Vanessa
