Vanessa Ferguson  3:04
Now on today's show, we're going to be discussing tips for shopping while you're at Walt Disney World. And these are tips of course when you're there on vacation. And remember if you haven't listened to our last episode, if you aren't on vacation in the parks, and no you want something, contact our friends, Louise and Nicole at shot mini mart for all of your shopping needs when you're not there. Well on today's show, we're going to be talking about how to maximize and get the best things out of your shopping experience when you are at the parks. In one of the things on this episode, we're going to focus on shopping in the parks, we're not going to really look at the resorts or at Disney Springs, because there's so much more even beyond that. So today we're just going to focus on the parks there are a few of these tips that you can use beyond the parks and that actually is what we're going to start with right away something that applies beyond the parks. And that's your discount. Now there are let's just be honest, Disney merchandise is expensive, very expensive, but we all know we can't leave without buying something.

Kris Johns  4:05
At least if you're like us you know I what I want I love Crocs and I got a 50th anniversary crocs was the first thing because I had heard that they were you know out I went to the Disney Store was it called World of Disney World The Disney went straight to the Crocs section display got my size I warm today even so, yes again. But again, I was not expecting a discount at all. Yes.

Vanessa Ferguson  4:29
So how do you get a discount when you're shopping at Disney? There's a couple of different ways now one way if you have the chase Disney rewards visa which we both have those will give a shout out for Chase there. And with that if you make a purchase that's $50 or more at pretty much any of the shops in the park she'll get 10% off so you get 10% off your purchase if $50 or more. Now here's one catch because I've been if you're like she might save up Disney gift cards that you get from people, maybe you have

cash on you, sometimes people have cash, maybe you just want to use whatever you have on your magic band. The catch is that to get the 10% off, you have to use your Disney Visa card. So that's something to keep in mind. So that or your Disney rewards card. So with the Disney visa, you get rewards dollars back, if you're using that you can also get the 10% off. And it doesn't have to be a $50 purchase. So what I try to do is if you're at a shop, try to put everything together on one purchase. That way you can get that 10%.

Now two other ways that you can save in this as consistently across the board is if you're a Disney Vacation Club member, or you're an annual pass holder, so these discounts vary from year to year. Right now I just got my annual pass for the parks and the current annual pass holder discount is 20% off. And I did find one store in Epcot that where they only gave me 10%. But pretty much across the board, you get 20% off your merchandise purchase. The great thing with these discounts for DVC or annual pass holders is there's no minimum purchase. So you don't have to have that $50 like you do with a Disney rewards visa. But that was really great that 20% off the annual Passholder Oh, definitely. I mean, I think you know, Vanessa, I have to admit, I don't really know what things cost. Vanessa doesn't she just does it. She doesn't ask me because I don't know. But I know she kind of gave me the quick like, Okay, well, can I keep it? I don't ask I don't. I know discount tickets are not cheap. But I know when she got, you know, the year past that she we use those discounts. And we saw some savings immediately. So it was a very, I don't need the year pass for myself. Because I won't be probably back in a while. But with it Vanessa really makes a good use of those discounts. Yeah, so 20% off is great. I was able I even bought some Christmas gifts, because those are things that let's say there's similar things that you see on Disney shopping on the website, or something that's just a character base, like we bought some character based items for our daughter, that in theory, you might be able to get somewhere else. But getting that 20% off discount, it's a great deal. Now, a couple of other things that you want to think about and this is across the board, no matter where you're at, is if you find something that is specific for a ride or an attraction. So these are some tips about buying different things. Get it because you're not going to find something like forever asked at Magic Kingdom, or you're not going to find something for It's a Small World Animal Kingdom. Things are usually very specific in those small shops that are outside the rides. That's where you're going to get the merchandise set specific for those characters. Like when we were in Epcot, our last day on our recent trip. Our daughter loves frozen. And Chris likes frozen to do. So we went into the shop in Norway, and we bought our daughter some Christmas gifts from Frozen themed Christmas gifts. Kris got a really cool frozen Magic Band.

Kris Johns  7:58
Oh, I really nice one. Yeah.

Vanessa Ferguson  8:00
And so we were able to not only use that discount we got but then we were able to get those things that were specific for that ride. So that's very important. To do that. I think sometimes people wait until the end of a trip and then they miss out on getting those. Now a couple of other things that you want to remember when it comes to looking for specific things is that when you're during a specific season or during a festival, so for instance, at Epcot, we were there during Food and Wine Festival recently I was there at during Flower and Garden earlier this year, there's only going to be a few shops that carry the merchandise for that particular festival. So for instance, at Epcot, there's what's called the Port of Entry shop, which is right at the start of the World Showcase. Essentially, if you're facing the American adventure, you'll see it right. It's at the front of the lagoon, you go into that port of entry shop, and they typically will have merchandise for whatever that particular festival is. There will also be kiosks throughout the world showcase for those particular festivals. But you're not going to find these items at shops like the creation shop, and future world. Or there's also like the larger world traveler shop over at the international gateway, those are not going to have things for the festival. So if you're looking for something like I love pigment stuff for the different festivals, you want to go to these specific shops to be able to find that because otherwise you're you're kind of going to be out of luck. I know like I've gotten last year there was a Flower and Garden spirit Jersey I really wanted so I had to go to the different shops that carried the festival merchandise to be able to find the one in the size that I was looking for.

And when we were just at Magic Kingdom with a new 50th anniversary merchandise, there are a few things sprinkled here and there are a lot of the food items that are 50th anniversary theme or real minor things but most of the things if you're at Magic Kingdom, you have to go to the Emporium or to the theater which has some of those like vintage really

He says, but we really didn't see any that 50th anniversary anywhere else in Magic Kingdom Besides that, the Emporium. And that's where you saw those fights.

Kris Johns  10:09
Exactly what it was like, just don't wait. I mean, you're there's no buyer's remorse. I mean, if you don't feel like it, get it, you got to get it, you gotta grab it. I mean, there was things were even though there was even pins that I was looking at. And they were like, let's say there's 10, I kind of walked back to show him Vanessa, and they were gone.

Vanessa Ferguson  10:28
Yeah, so you, especially with the things like 50th anniversary, Flower and Garden food and wine, if it's something that is for a limited time, or even the holiday thing. So Halloween, Christmas, etc. If it's for a limited time, and there's only going to be so much of that merchandise, you need to get it when you find it a particular size or style, whatever it might be a pin, like Chris mention. And here's one of the things right now they don't have the delivery back to the resorts for packages or the delivery to the front of the parks, which was a huge perk, but what they do still have and what we took advantage of this last trip is shipping items home. So it's surprisingly affordable I mail gifts to we have friends and family and other states. And I use the Postal Service. I've used ups. And it's expensive to ship stuff nowadays.

Kris Johns  11:22
And it sure is I mean, you know, is a side note, we actually had an Amazon package delivered. It was $6 for them to hold the package for you. Oh, that was at Disney. Yeah. So yeah, we're talking about shipping home. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Vanessa Ferguson  11:38
So it does, it can add up for shipping. But the nice thing is, we didn't ship huge amounts of things. But we shipped quite a few items. Like I bought a canister for our kitchen that was glass, I didn't want to have to carry it in our suitcase, carry it around have a chance of it broken. I paid $8 to have it shipped home. On the last day we were there we were at Epcot. And we had already had our luggage packed and we knew we were right at our weight in right now. Especially with airlines, you're very limited on your luggage, even when you buy luggage to be able to take checked bag or something, you still had those weight limits, we were able to ship several things home, they were on a site

Kris Johns  12:18
No, I saw a meme, where it was somebody at the airport like checking in and it was in their bag, we could check bag, it was like, Oh, your your bag is too heavy. And then the person goes, oh, I'll just put it my carry on. And they go, that solves the problem. And it's like, doesn't make any sense. It's the same, you know, if it's, if it's 51 pounds in your luggage, or if it's 49 pounds, but yet you put those two pounds into your backpack. Man as a man, yeah, it makes no sense at all.

Vanessa Ferguson  12:45
So if you don't have any room in your luggage, if you're traveling light, or if you just don't want to carry around the parks, I highly suggest shipping things home, I didn't pay any more than 995 for shipping. Now, I will say we didn't ship a massive box home. But things that at home, I would have spent 15 16 17 $20 to ship under $10 at Disney. So definitely take advantage of shipping things from home. I suggest to if you can purchase things all at once, because you can't ship something here. And then oh, I just bought this two hours later ship that with that other package. No, you have to pay shipping at each transaction. So if possible, like go to some of the bigger shops, do a lot of your shopping and ship it all at once.

It is a great saver. And one thing we did do on the actual 50th is we got a locker to put our stuff that we bought in that were really worked and we just because it was so number one you want to keep it nice. And number two, it was just worth it.

Kris Johns  13:45
You just don't want to carry extra, you know, luggage around. And it worked out really nicely. Yeah. So if you don't want to ship at home, at least invest in pay the $10 get the larger locker keep it up there then you're not having to carry it around.

Now where do you if where I was talking about kind of like those bulk buys where you buy a bunch of items together and then ship them or take them to a locker go to those biggest shops that are in the parks. There's a couple of key shops that you can go to in each of the parks that has a great variety of merchandise. Now the one shop I just recently mentioned was the creation shop at Epcot. It pretty much has a broad range of items you will find a few food and wine and a few like 50th anniversary things but it's kind of the the one stop shop for Epcot. And that used to be the old mouse gears that's located in future world the creation shop just reopened recently.

Vanessa Ferguson  14:41
So check it out, go in and get everything you need. We always try to stop there. The beginning and towards the end of a trip to see what's new at Magic Kingdom, we already talked about it but mainstream Emporium that's kind of where you're gonna find everything you go through those connecting stores, you're going to find the special merchandise for the 50th for Halloween for Christmas, whatever it might be. Everything's right there. It's kind of your one stop shop. Animal Kingdom near the tree of life. You have the discovery Trading Company, which is the largest shop that has a great variety of things. And I we found some unique things at that shop in the animal kingdom we sure have Yeah, so go in there, they sometimes will have unique clothing items they'll have and not just Animal Kingdom specific, just like Walt Disney World specific that we found. And right across the walkway is the island mercantile. That's also a great shop, where I mentioned having the glass canister for our kitchen ship back. I bought that at the discovering trading company. So those are some great shops. And really, you can find some unique things there. Finally, over at Hollywood studios, I would put this up as my least favorite of the bigger shops at the different parks that I mean, I go in there, but I don't usually buy a lot. Mickey's of Hollywood always has a good variety of things, it just doesn't seem to have as many unique items that you might find at some of the other shops. So that's something to keep in mind when you're out shopping. So those are the biggest shops like oh, you have your kids or you have some money left that you want to spend personally, and you want to go and get a lot of shopping done at once. Those are the shops that you kind of want to head towards. Now we're going to look at what are some of those most unique shops and I just picked a few.

And the first one is the Mori Memento shop at the exit to haunted mansion. I mean, we don't we're not big into haunted mansion. I have a few haunted mansion things. But this shop is pretty cool. For sure. Yeah. So if you I think that's probably the most unique ride specific shop. You can get all kinds of clothing, housewares, pretty much anything that you can think of haunted mansion, they have it in there.

Now moving over to Epcot. And this is not a Disney specific shop, the Mitsukoshi department store in the Japan pavilion, and that was a really fun store because it's actually a department store from Japan. And they have all kinds of things from character related things so like Pokemon and Hello Kitty to very specific things for from Japanese culture. I have a friend who loves Hello Kitty, I go there and get her gifts a lot. One of the things they also have is that's a shop where you can have a oyster open to find a pearl. They have kimonos incense, they have glassware, they have a really cool area in the back that has Japanese candies and snacks. So if you want to be adventurous or you're doing like one of those candy trips around the World Showcase, that's where you want to head, but I think that's just kind of a unique place. It's a decent size shop as well. Just out of the World Showcase, I would consider that the most unique shop. It definitely is I agree with you Vanessa in your name and a big shopping person, I am not.

Now we're going to move over to Hollywood studios and galaxies edge. I will say I haven't been in a lot of the shops and galaxies edge but they're just some really cool things. Even when you just look at pictures. There's black spire Outfitters, there's the joy depot, the creature stall, these all have very unique items that you're only going to find in Galaxy's edge. So whether you're a huge Star Wars fan or someone you know, you can go get apparel, you can get really unique stuffed animals you can get. I mean, they have where you hit lifesavers the droid depot where you can build your own droid just really unbelievable things. So that I think is one of the other very unique shops that you can find at any of the Disney parks. And one thing that is important to think about too, when it comes to shopping, typically any of the shops that will be towards the front of a park or near any sort of exit. So near the international gateway near the front entrances of the park, those shops are typically going to be open a little bit before the official Park opening, as well as seeing open late after the park closes. So these are places that you can run in and get that last minute item. It's the last day of your trip, you forgot to get XY and Z go into that particular shop as you're leaving the parks. You can fill up on what you need. And really I think, besides eating the next experience that I enjoy a lot at Disney is shopping and just going into the stores and looking into unique things that you can't find anywhere else.

Kris Johns  19:35
And I love standing in line for Vanessa.

Vanessa Ferguson  19:37
Yes So Kris will stand in line at the shops for me and he did that when we were there especially during the 50s there was lots of standing in line for the shops. So hopefully some of these tips can help you whether it be making the most out of a discount finding some of those unique shops out there. This can help you as you plan your next Disney trip and planning out whether you've been saving up to buy something special for yourself or you want to buy some gifts for friends and family at home. This gives you some different ideas you can use. And hopefully this will be useful for you on your next Disney vacation. So we are going to get our interview up with Coco. We are looking forward to sharing with you about her business, and hearing about the different products that she offers.

We would like to welcome Coco to the show, her shop rang me some magic has all kinds of unique accessories. And of course, the main thing that they offer are rings. They have really cool ones that are inspired by Disney movies, the parks, and they have unique ones for every different holiday as well. And she's going to be telling all about the different things that they have in their shop. She's a mother of two young boys. She's an industrial engineer and an artist who of course, like all of us loves everything Disney, she became an artisan and started a shop where she actually made wooden sunglasses, which is pretty cool. And from there, her business continued to grow. And she has as I mentioned two young boys, one is nine month old, and one is seven years old. So we are really looking forward to hearing all about her shop. Welcome to the show, Coco. Thank you guys for having me. Now, of course, one of the main things we always like to hear are what are some of your things, some things that you enjoy at the parks? So right now we've been asking people, What is your favorite part of the 50th anniversary celebration at Walt Disney World so far?

Cocó Rodríguez  21:34
Well, my favorite thing is the revamping of the castle. Yeah, at first, when they painted it pink, I was kind of mad, right? Green, but seeing it with all decorations, that 50th medallion and the status all around, it comes out together in a grand and very, very glorious way. And it feels elegant, it feels elevated and very appropriate for the 50th Golden celebration. For sure. And I'm like you when we were there last year and we saw them starting work on it. I was hesitant but once you see all together it's so pretty that is for sure.

Vanessa Ferguson  22:16
Now we want to hear all about your business and what are the products you offer connected to Disney.

Cocó Rodríguez  22:24
Well, I design and create rings and accessories inspired by Disney Disney movies, characters and other things in the parks. I basically started doing rings. And then it grew into me making all kinds of accessories and one of the most playful accessories that I find that I make is the the the earrings that have like joints like the little soldiers ones and Chewbacca the auto diesel earrings that they they move they tingle and they will so I it really allowed me to make earrings as well. Awesome.

Kris Johns  23:14
With that, you know really what was the inspiration for you to start the business?

Cocó Rodríguez  23:19
Oh, well we all love these things. Yes, yes. So they stay longer. And this new history buff, I am always looking for ways to connect with Disney and as an industrial designer and being already in the wooden sunglasses business I was you know always creating and designing new things, new accessories and back in 2017 I was going to Disney World with my family for the first time when my then three year old. So I started looking into things I wanted to wear in the parks and I came across a bunch of cute Mickey and Minnie ears, shirts, earrings, but not a single Mickey ears screen that I imagined in my head right.

And it was very interesting to me that all that is related brings iPhone or you know like high end rings, like silver gold crystal diamond rings, you know nothing affordable or whimsical. Nothing what I was expecting, you know, so I started thinking this is something I can do. Right, right. There's nothing like it in the market and it's something new that I can offer that has never been done before. And I bought some color acrylics and with my laser cutter machine that I use for my sunglasses business. I design and got the first designs for myself for to work for the strip. Yeah, and these were the simple Mickey ears and then many ears ring with a stackable bow. I made a Donald's stackable trio and the Maleficent stick. Yes.

And the trip in 2007 thing was canceled because of hurricane Maria. Oh, no. But that gave me the opportunity to develop more designs in that year. And in 2018, when we went, when we finally went to Disney, I wore them. And I received tons of compliments from all the cast members, people that saw the earrings, and the rings and the bikes. And by then I was able to start on my website. And that's how I came to be, bring me somebody. In one of the things I know, as people listen, they'll finally be able to see some pictures of your products as well. But yours are three dimensional, where the design isn't flat on the ring. The ring is three dimensional, which is so cool and unique. Like you said, it's different than when you're used to like the just the gold or the silver where something might be etched in these are dimensional, which is so cool. And so unique, which I think makes your product stand out so much more. Yes, I try to, you know, I'm always thinking of 3d, right, but I do not have a 3d printing machine. So how can I make this 3d?

How can I make this make it more versatile? Right? Where, and it's fun for me to always come up to we build things new methods to make this imagination reality for sure.

Vanessa Ferguson  26:31
Now that ties into our next question, we always like to hear how you think your products can add Disney magic to our listeners lives.

Cocó Rodríguez  26:41
Well, they are fun, and whimsical way to add some little Disney bound to their everyday lives. You know, for the park goers that love to park bound and pay attention to even the smallest, smallest details. This is the perfect accessory to be had two fingers.

Right. And for those who want to put a little touch of magic in their everyday life, you know, not not, you know, people like me that don't have the opportunity to go to their bikes like every single day, all the around. But they have they want to put like a little touch of magic in their everyday life. This is a subtle way to do it. And we just a hint just a touch up tasty at your fingertips. Correct. Now, what are some of your favorite designs that you've made? My favorite all time design is not given the Mickey ears wanted to wear to the parks is that Donald trio? Oh, nice. Is that is one of the first designs that I made. And I don't know, every time I look at it, it brings me like this sensation that this is, you know, like it was all started by a mouse for a while. This was all started by Tonto for me. Oh, that's great. I have a good friend. She loves Donald, I'm going to have to send her a link for you for her to check out your download rings for sure. Yes.

Vanessa Ferguson  28:11
Now you do do things for I know you've had Halloween designs and Christmas designs, do you come out with new new designs frequently are just set seasonally?

Cocó Rodríguez  28:22
Oh, for sure. This is like a major problem. But it's a good problem, right? Because I have like tons of good ideas all the time, new collections I want to come up with and I have so little time to design all this and create it.

Right now. I'm about to go live with the 50th collection Nice. Probably on Tuesday. God bless. So by the time this is airs for our audience, then they'll be able to check that out. So that's awesome. Hopefully, yes. Right. But I also have like other collections that I don't know when to

you know, put them they're out there because they are not Christmas related or is Park related. And I have to, you know, like, put them in between the seasons where I want to, you know, showcase other pieces on the collections. Now, if I were to order let's say I have a trip coming up or if I wanted a set for a particular holiday, what is your turnaround time? Like How soon should people order? Um, probably two weeks, give me two weeks and I'll give you I'll send you your your custom. Everything is custom made. I don't have like inventory right now. Sure. Because, you know, you can order any size offerings, or you can customize you know, I want this color or this bundle or whatever you want.

So everything is made by order. Sure. So give me two weeks and then I'll send everything to you. If you want something rushed, then I can do it for you for an extra cost. Okay, perfect. With that, you know, you mentioned all these awesome designs, where can people go online to find them? Oh, right. You can find me in Instagram at Ring me some magic. And also on the website, www dot ring me some magic.com. And I will make sure to share both of those links in the show notes. And we really appreciate you taking time to share all about your shop and the creative products do you have? We really appreciate you being with us today? No, thank you guys. Thank you so much.

Vanessa Ferguson  31:07
Now we are on to our Two Minute trivia and our wisdom from long quote and Kris, you are up with trivia.

Kris Johns  31:13
Well, you know, we're talking about shopping. And I'm not the world's biggest Star Wars fan. No, but it was apropos for this. Okay, so you know, do you know who our two d two is? Yes. You can buy air quotes and authentic are two d two for how much money?

Vanessa Ferguson  31:32
Oh, I've seen not a replica but what they would call a it's like life size. Isn't it? A near rough? I mean, like a probably movie? Ready? 7500.

Kris Johns  31:46
I'm not gonna do my math very well, but times that essentially by for Wow. $25,000 Holy cow. And

Vanessa Ferguson  31:55
yeah, but if you were hardcore, that would actually be kind of awesome. It would be. I wonder if it makes noise and like,

Kris Johns  32:01
I would hope it makes the oops. Wow, very interesting. Yeah. Yeah.

All right. Well, we are going to end with our wisdom from Walt quote. And I thought it was kind of interesting, because we're talking about shopping and how there's great merchandising at the parks. But this goes back to just really what the heart of Disney is, hopefully even though things change, and we know that there's a lot of

concern right now of cost for things. But I think this really goes back to the true heart of what Walt had envisioned. I've never been interested in personal gain or profit. This business in this studio have been my entire life. And that's true. His vision lives on as all of us go and enjoy the parks and enjoy our time at Disney. So thank you so much for joining us on this episode of the Disney love podcast with Vanessa and Kris. I'm Vanessa and I'm Kris.
