Synchronicity in life often unfolds in retrospect as you see the path you’ve traveled has led you to where you are now, and things all seem to fall into place. Today’s guest came to terms with this reality after the weight gain she experienced after quitting competitive gymnastics led her to a career helping others with their weight loss and clutter control. A path that she did not expect but ultimately, put her exactly where she was meant to be. This week on Journeys Through Change, my guest Melanie Liss Cohen and I are talking about her journey from weight loss to clutter control and how she helps others do the same!

Melanie trained intensely as a former competitive gymnast, spending 20–30 hours a week in the gym. After stepping away from gymnastics, Melanie experienced weight gain, which continued through college. Together with her college sweetheart, now her husband, she settled down in Brooklyn, where they raised their two daughters. However, during her pregnancies, Melanie gained more weight, reaching over 200 pounds by the time she turned 30. Determined to change her path, Melanie joined Weight Watchers, lost 65 pounds, and became a weight loss coach, spending 20 years helping others reach their health and wellness goals with Weight Watchers. In 2022, she took a bold step and founded her own business, ThoughtFully Coaching, where she now offers one-on-one personal coaching. This year, she launched a seminar-based program, *Design Your Healthy Life Strategy*, which explores the connections between clutter and weight.

When we think of the end of life, it can bring up a whole host of emotions, from fear, curiosity, dread, or the simple disbelief that it will actually happen to us. But the stark reality is that death is a part of life we will all eventually experience. Today’s guest understands this deeply and, through her work as a death doula, helps families navigate the end-of-life transition with compassion and understanding. This week on Journeys Through Change, my guest Jill McClennon and I are talking about how she found her way to becoming a death doula.

As I watched the New York City marathon and saw runners cross the finish line, it took me back to 2010, when I took to the streets of NYC to run the marathon myself. In this reflection, I began to dissect what it really takes to set (and achieve) those bigger goals in life, the ones that have the power to fundamentally change how we view ourselves. It all came down to 3 things: clarity, motivation, and mindset. That’s why this week on Journeys Through Change, I am breaking down how to achieve that big goal!

At 73 years of age, Dorothy Erlanger successfully completed the Olympic National Championship triathlon, overcoming significant challenges, including a limb length difference and a decade-long hiatus from training. With only four months of focused training, Dorothy swam a mile, biked 25 miles, and ran a 10K, proving that age is no barrier to achieving extraordinary goals. Dorothy's journey is not just about completing a triathlon; it’s a testament to the power of perseverance and the belief that it’s never too late to start anew. As a 20-year survivor of advanced ovarian cancer, she actively engages in patient advocacy, serving for nearly 15 years with NRG Oncology, where she is currently Chair of the Patient Advocate Committee, and participating in programs such as Survivors Teaching Students and advisory roles at Massey Cancer Center. One of my favorite writers, Pam Houston, once said, “It’s taken me a lifetime to understand that my limitation is an old take I no longer need to tell myself.” I don’t know about you, but these words hit home for me. I think about all the stories I have told myself over the years about what I can or cannot do, be or cannot be, and what I am and am not capable of accomplishing. I’ve weaved these stories into how I live my life, and it’s taken me years to finally dismantle them one by one. Travel can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s a way to escape the hustle and grind of everyday life and simply unwind. Procrastination is defined as a self-defeating behavior pattern marked by short-term benefits and long-term costs. On the surface, it can seem so benign, like procrastinating is just one of those things we all do from time to time, but the reason behind our procrastination can be far deeper. Procrastinating can actually be a sign of 2 deeper fears that are holding us back from creating the outcomes we have in our lives. This week on Journeys Through Change, I’m asking the question: are you afraid of failure or success? What your procrastination may be telling you.

Today’s topic is something I think we can all relate to (whether we want to or not), and that is taking accountability in our own lives. It's often something that becomes more apparent with time because as we get older, we begin to see more clearly how everything is connected and how our decisions create our outcomes. As we mature, it becomes easier to accept that we have a greater hand to play in shaping our lives than we ever felt we did when we were younger. But let's face it: it takes a certain level of maturity to put down our defenses and actually own what's happening in our lives and take on the responsibility of where we find ourselves today. This week on Journeys Through Change, I’m talking about taking accountability and letting go of victimhood.

The memories of our past are a blueprint for how we live our lives today. They give us a glimpse into who we are and often shape our choices as we move into adulthood. They paint the picture of our experience within our family, but how much do they actually tell us about the generations that came before us? Hint: it has more of an impact than you might think. Beth Jones experienced this firsthand when a hypnotherapy session brought up generational trauma she never realized she was holding onto. After a life-altering event sent Beth on a multi-year healing journey to recover from the effects of trauma and survivorship on my life, she had made it her mission to mentor other survivors through her own experience and resulting message. Beth’s inspiring message is that you, too, can heal.

These are women who have not only experienced change in their lives but have ultimately transformed how they view themselves, their inner gifts, and the power they have to create their own path. Courage is often difficult to build, especially when change happens to us unexpectedly. When facing the unknown, our insecurity often soars and fear can creep in pretty quickly when we don’t know where a shift in our lives will take us. But know this– courage is not only needed to initiate and navigate change, but it helps you get past what’s holding you back. Courage is the driving force that moves you toward where you want to go in life. Our bodies are not just vessels to carry us through life, they are reservoirs of wisdom and emotion. Every experience, every trauma, and every joy we encounter leaves its mark on our bodies. Like silent witnesses, our bodies store this energy, often manifesting as discomfort or unease when left untreated. Gianine Strang learned this firsthand after spending years undoing the trauma she unknowingly held in her body. And once she found the key to healing, she began teaching others how to do it for themselves. This week on Journeys Through Change, my guest Gianine Strang and I are talking about how she learned to teach others to heal past trauma through movement.

Gianine’s passion for dance led her to the University of the Arts, where she immersed herself in the world of movement. However, life, as it often does, took an unexpected turn. Gianine encountered personal trauma that shook the very foundation of her being. It was a pivotal moment that set her on a path of deep healing, thus the founding of Movement Medicine. Through healing sessions, in-person workshops, group coaching programs, and monthly memberships, Gianine helps people transform, shedding the layers of societal conditioning that have kept us detached from our bodies and rediscovering the innate wisdom that lies within.

Kelsey Moreira is a wildly passionate entrepreneur who, after getting sober in 2015, ditched her decade-long tech career with Intel and followed her sweet tooth to open her own cookie dough company: Doughp. Kelsey has appeared twice on ABC’s Shark Tank, was named a Forbes 20 Under 30, an Inc Female Founder 200, and even ranked #274 in the Inc 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America. Given her personal recovery journey, she has become a leader in the mental health & recovery advocacy space. Since starting the #Doughp4Hope initiative in 2018, Doughp has committed to reducing stigmas around addiction recovery and mental health inside and outside the company. They are a designated Recovery Friendly Workplace and have donated more than $100,000 to nonprofits working in this space.
