On this episode of B&R at the Movies Podcast Berry and Robin watch and discus the 2014 film Just Before I Go. This dark comedy is directed by Courteney Cox and stars Seann William Scott, Olivia Thirlby, Garret Dillahunt, Kate Walsh, Kyle Gallner, Mackenzie Marsh, Evan Ross, Rob Riggle, Connie Stevens, David Arquette, and Jack Quaid. This comedy is about life, death, and how we make the most of the time in between.
All right, everybody. Welcome back for another episode of B and R at the Movies Podcast. I'm Barry. And I'm Robin. Right. So this week was my choice of film. I decided um to purchase a film. Never seen it. And we're going to watch it together. So it's good.
SPEAKER_02Oh, really? Is that what we're doing?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I've seen trailers. Oh. And actually, I intentionally have not watched a trailer recently. Oh, okay. Because I didn't want it like fresh in my mind, like going through it. So it's been a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Oh, this will be very interesting. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_00So we are going to watch the 2014 film just before I go. Just before I go. And so this is directed by Courtney Cox. Oh. Who was from Friends. I mean that's her that's her big her big breakout was Friends. Um and stars Sean Williams Scott as the he's the main. He's the lead. Um Olivia Turnbully, I think is how you say her last name. Okay. Not 100% on that. Um and then uh cup and then several other people. Uh Rob Ringle is in it. And uh Courtney's ex-husband, David Arquette, is in the film.
SPEAKER_02Probably wasn't her ex at the time. I think he actually was.
SPEAKER_00Oh so there were ones, there are a couple where it's like they were together. Um, I'm pretty sure they have at least two, I think two kids together. Oh wow. Not 100% how on how many. Um, but I think it was like a mutual like split and stuff. And so working together probably it's not that unusual. Probably not. Probably not. Okay. Um, so Courtney directed the film. Um, she didn't write the film. Okay. Um, but it's another where it's an actor or actress that is directing without them in the film. Right. And we've talked about before where it's like we like to see the actors that can step out of being the actor and then being behind the camera, or they can do, you know, they don't have to stay there. They can do one or the other, but we we don't really care for a hundred a lot of times when they do both at the same time.
SPEAKER_02So it's like sometimes sometimes it works fine, and sometimes you can just see, like, no, it's not working. Somebody else would have been better in that role. So or you could have given it to somebody not not better, but it would just like give it to somebody else.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02Go ahead and direct, do that, right?
SPEAKER_00Hang in there, do all that. Yeah, and that and that's the thing, like, you know, they may find uh, you know, they love directing, and then it's like, oh, that's their their new thing, and then they're gonna just stick with directing. I mean, uh, so we've seen um well, Rob Reiner, we were talking before, and Rob mainly stayed behind the camera, he did still go in front of the camera once in a while a few times, he did. Um, but not not a ton. But there are some others that but I think like Ron Howard. Ron Howard's definitely a good one.
SPEAKER_02He got behind that camera and he never left it.
SPEAKER_00He never left.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he was like, no, he was like yeah, he must really love it just to do it that way. But yeah, but I think you know, I think it's great, especially after all those times, all those years being in front of the camera.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02Um, so I don't know. I think it's kind of cool. I mean, I don't know. Maybe Ron Ron Ron Howard has been in front of the camera for somebody else, but I don't think so.
SPEAKER_00I don't well, and I'm thinking I'm like, maybe if he did, he might have been portraying himself. Maybe maybe in something like that. Yeah, and that's what I look that up. I gotta look that up. Yep. Um, so for Courtney being a director, yeah. Um, she has directed this film. Yeah, she's directed uh two shorts that are listed.
SPEAKER_02Before this film?
SPEAKER_00Uh one before, one after. Okay. Um and then she's directed 12 episodes of her show Cougar Town.
SPEAKER_01Ah.
SPEAKER_00Um, that she was she was the lead in that. Right, right. And then she also did um I want to say this is a made-for-tv film because it's not it's the rating on it, it says TV 14. It's not doesn't have um a movie rating on it.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00But it it's showing an hour and 27 minutes. So it looks like it's a made-for-tv film.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Um so she has not done a lot of directing. So this is pretty much her her film of like this is this is like the big film that that that she directed.
SPEAKER_01Her first big film, yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Who knows? Maybe she'll do more, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and so I've I don't really know anything about her directing style or anything. I've never never looked it up or anything. So I'm I mean, this is for me, this is a total blind shot on this.
SPEAKER_02It's like any you do you have an inkling of is it a drama? Is it a comedy?
SPEAKER_00Look for me, it's uh it looks like a uh comedy and drama. It looks like kind of like kind of like a dramedy. A dramedy, yeah. Okay um and so I I don't really want to give away too much about what I know okay because not only that, it's stuff that I think I remember of what when I saw the trailer. So I don't want to be also don't want to be wrong either. So I kind of want to um but what's the name of it again? Just before I go.
SPEAKER_02Just before I go.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. But yeah, I mean it's one where it's like I I know some people in it, I you know, know the director, but it's like we'll see. Okay, and uh, you know, yeah. We've taken flyers on films before, it's been great, and we've taken some that have not been so great.
SPEAKER_02So this is kind of interesting.
SPEAKER_00So, okay, all right, yeah, we're on an adventure on this one.
SPEAKER_02Let's go for it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we'll see how it turns out. Yeah, all right. Well, we are gonna go ahead and watch just before I go and then come back a little bit and talk about it. Okay, all right, we will be back in a little while. All right, everybody, welcome back. We just got done watching Just Before I Go. Um, even though both of us hadn't seen this one before, since it was my choice, I'll let you take it away. Okay.
SPEAKER_02I I really liked it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, I liked all the the characters. Nobody was a normal character.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, not they're all messed up in their own way. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it's like, well, that's kind of refreshing. Okay. No cliches going on there.
SPEAKER_00Right, right.
SPEAKER_02Um, yeah, I I kind of I I really liked it. It's an easy, it's an easy movie to watch. Yes, yes, it just kind of rolls right along. It's got some, you know, a little bit of drama, some crazy humor.
SPEAKER_00It's it's pushes towards the crude humor pretty hard.
SPEAKER_02A little bit. Doesn't it doesn't quite cross the line, but it gets there. It gets there.
SPEAKER_00It pushes right up to it.
SPEAKER_02But there are some, you know, some serious moments too. And yeah, I I really I thought it was really good. I mean, and there's like all these crazy characters, but it's like I kind of liked him. I was kind of rooting for most of them, you know. Great, right? You know, you really do. I mean, it's it's yeah. Yeah so uh yeah, that's kind of how I feel about it.
SPEAKER_00I thought it was I thought it was really, really good too. Um, it was um with uh Sean Williams uh Scott's character, I wasn't sure um how it he was gonna go at first. I thought maybe he was gonna be kind of a jerk. Yeah. And then it was like, oh, then he he wasn't. And so then, but uh, I don't know. Yeah, it's one like you said, you're like you're rooting for all the characters. Um it it I don't know, when he ends up sleeping with the woman that he ended up when he went to school with, yeah. Um that was kind of like a moment where you're just like okay, maybe he's not such a great guy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because he's gotta have I mean, I guess it's really kind of showing that everybody's got flaws. Everybody, you know, nobody is just like just straight and narrow or all bad. That's one thing. It's not everybody's all bad and no but and not everybody's all good.
SPEAKER_00Right. It's it's kind of showing you that. Yeah. It's yeah, and that definitely hits home towards the end, right? Um uh right at the very end. But yeah, it was um, yeah, it was it was pretty, pretty interesting. Yeah, it was definitely uh definitely um some wacky kind of characters. Um, but it's I don't know, they were wacky, but also kind of grounded where it's they're kind of like they could exist, they could exist, just since like they're just a little weird, and it's just like all right, all right, I can like I can see that a little bit.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and you know, and it's and it was a lot of just kind of this is like rolling with it. It's just like okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. But yeah, it's yeah, it's kind of a it's a interesting premise of the guy who decides to kill himself, but then goes back to his hometown to kind of not really make amends with people, but kind of like confront the people that did him wrong.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And then it just kind of rolls with with that, and you know, come to find out like, oh, you know, that bully that you grew up with, you know, is you know wasn't always a bully his whole life. You know, he turned out to be somebody else.
SPEAKER_02And yeah, and he he knew what he did. I mean, he apologized for it. Yeah, you know, he understood why he did it, but he said that's not an excuse, you know.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02And uh yeah, it's yeah, you know, so it was it was I don't know. I mean really I think with all the characters, they re they kind of were well-rounded characters, you know. You just kind of like yeah, you kind of liked them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. It yeah, like you said, there's no there's no real big cliche or anything. There's I mean, you know, there's you know, when he finds out that his um his nephew is gay and stuff, and it's like, okay, you know, it's like, you know, it's not a cliche, but it's kind of like, alright, you know, that's kind of been done a few times, and it's like, alright, let's see how they're gonna do it this time. But uh, but yeah, it was it was definitely good. Um cinematography on it was a little was a little weird for me at points because it felt like it was in the sunlight, it was way overexposed.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00And it was like unnecessarily almost like almost kind of felt like like it would be like in a dream sequence, kind of, where it just like a little, a little too bright and a little like a little off.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um so that that was a little a little odd for me. It was all it was almost distracting, and then it kind of dropped off there towards the end. So it was kind of it was kind of weird. It was like there throughout most of it. So it was I don't know. It was just something that was just kind of um caught my eye in not a good way, I guess. So um, but the story was the story was you know pretty was pretty funny. I mean, there was a lot of there was a there was a lot of good comedic moments to it, you know. Um language on this one just like went like off the rails there for a while. And I was just like it's rated R.
SPEAKER_02I'm pretty sure it's rated R.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think it I think it is, and it it earned it for the language.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's just fine though. I mean, really. So then just jump.
SPEAKER_00I mean, as far as the the rating, you know, for being rated R, that would probably be the only thing other than you know, talking about sex. Right. Because they talk about sex like throughout it constantly. Um, but then there's I mean, there's a little bit of violence, but not not an over amount, so it's not like a crazy amount of violence, which is ironic in a film about a guy who's talking about committing suicide the whole time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That and then uh um there's no nudity, but there's like almost nudity, I guess you could say. It's like so it's kind of I don't know, it's kind of what it's kind of walking a weird line.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it is. A little bit a little bit of a head scratcher. It's like, oh well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's like it's like oh, we're it's R, but okay. It's not like a full soft R, but it's definitely an R, but it's like not like as bad of an R as it could be, I guess.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, so it's it's kind of interesting. But yeah, with uh when everything gets an R rating, I always kind of like judge on like okay, what age appropriate people do I think could be able to watch this. Because sometimes films get rated R, and you're like, okay, a 13, you'll be fine with it, you know, no big deal. Kind of this one I would probably push a little bit towards like the 17, like where it's actually intended for R.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, but uh yeah, it was Yeah, I would too. I mean it was it's definitely comedic moments, but um, like I said, the one the when he sleeps with the the girl that he went to school with, it it kind of like makes you not want to root for the guy for a little bit, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_02I was just like, oh well, they kind of well, you know, up until then he didn't have a lot of flaws.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, that's true. That's very true.
SPEAKER_02He really didn't. And it's like, but everybody's got flaws. Yeah. Everybody's got like bad judgment sometimes, you know. So yeah, I think it was just like, you know, he's he's got it too. Yeah. Just like everybody else.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I guess so. Cause up until then, yeah, he could be kind of like a blasé kind of character.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like you know, he's everything's happening.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because everything's happening around him and to others, but not to him. Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_02So this was where he was like, no, he didn't do the right thing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I guess so. I mean, yeah, I I guess now that you say that kind of makes it so I think, you know, he's more of a well-rounded character by doing that. Yeah. So Yeah, I think so. I okay. So I can I can get it. All right. Yeah. That was quick.
SPEAKER_02Just did a little therapy during Yeah.
SPEAKER_00A little video therapy.
SPEAKER_02Uh video. Uh I like that. That should be a thing. Video therapy.
SPEAKER_00There you go. There you go. Um, yeah, but it was, I mean, it's a it's a comedy drama that has a message to it, you know, and of just like a little bit, a little bit.
SPEAKER_02And you know, I mean, it's but it, you know, it's not gonna rack your brain.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, and you know, it's a nice ride. It is. It was a nice ride. It was an easy ride. I caught right on to it, uh, and you know, with especially not knowing a thing about it. Right, you know, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, it it lets you know and before the cr before the title even came across about pretty much what what the film was all about. Right. You know, see they they don't hold that.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay. All right. So now what's gonna happen? So you know right, yeah. And I just I I like just kind of how how it all kind of played out. I thought it was pretty good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um the the one thing I don't know. What? The the big monster thing that comes in the water.
SPEAKER_02I knew that was gonna happen. I really thought that that he's in the water. They've been talking about it through the whole movie. It's got it's gotta be like either he sees it or he thinks he sees it.
SPEAKER_00I thought it was I thought they were gonna do they think it that he thought he saw it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, just kind of like in the bit distance. Right, right, right. Not like right up into his face.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_02Um, so it was but but still you're supposed to know that he is his brain is losing oxygen. So whether whether it was real or not, that you know, come on. Yeah, it probably wasn't.
SPEAKER_00But you know because he j he just had a conversation with his father who passed away. Right, and that's what his dad said.
SPEAKER_02Your your brain is losing oxygen, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So yeah, so I get that where it's like, okay, you know, it you could just say like he he imagined it, obviously.
SPEAKER_02You know, it was just like a little gift. Yeah, he was yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it was but uh yeah, that was that was a little odd. A little odd and and I think kind of predictable for me, but then to think about it, it's like, yeah, but did it really happen? Who knows?
SPEAKER_00You know, exactly. And yeah, I think like if it was done kind of more subtle and just kind of like in the back, maybe in the background, or maybe like you know, something else. Um I don't know. Uh, I mean there's a million ways you could do it. I I think it was yeah, the I think the litr this was the literal take of it, and I I think it was just a little too much, in my opinion. But I don't know. It was I mean it was funny.
SPEAKER_02But still, yeah, it was it didn't hurt the film.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, no, it didn't, it didn't hurt it. No, it didn't. No. Um, but yeah, I thought um I thought the locations were were great on this. It was because it's it's all you know location work as far as I can tell. I mean, maybe the house that they were um that they were in might have been a s might have been a set on a set, but probably but who knows, maybe not.
SPEAKER_02Maybe not. Um but otherwise, yeah. I mean, you know, they're outside a lot, so they're yeah, you know, obviously on location someplace.
SPEAKER_00I I like the um the brothers fighting scene. I thought that was because I thought where it's like he they turn like he's actually tickling him at one point and stuff. It's like all right.
SPEAKER_02You guys don't know how to fight.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it's like you're not you're not really trying to hurt each other. You're you know, you're just letting out the little aggression stuff. Um so I thought that was I thought that was pretty funny. That was pretty pretty funny, yeah. Yeah, it's uh it's a it's definitely uh definitely a fun, a fun ride film, you know. It's like and and you know, there there is serious stuff in it, you know, there's a lot of suicide talk, you know, about being different, about being about being gay, about um you know, deal with uh with uh mentally challenged people and stuff for a little bit there, and kind of like it kind of you know, heavy, you know, people with weight issues, you know, it it kind of really talks a lot.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it kind of touched on a lot of lot of topics, a lot of but again, it was kind of like you know, this is what this person's going through.
SPEAKER_00You know, you're not any different because you're going through something else.
SPEAKER_02We're all going through something, and that was kind of like, yeah, that might be a thing in their life, but they're still a person, they're just a real person, right?
SPEAKER_00And then of course I thought it was the cliche that you know he ends up with the girl at the end, you know, and I was just thinking, I'm like, I was like, they could have just been friends, you know, or something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but you don't know, I mean, how serious, but I guess kind of serious at the end. Yeah, they could have they could have, I don't know. Well, and and then he kind of had to end it somehow.
SPEAKER_00But I mean, technically he doesn't live there, so you know, he still lives in LA.
SPEAKER_02So right, so they're not showing that. So it's like is she coming with him? It's like you know, maybe not, you know, kind of thing. So it's just like, yeah. But yeah, so yeah, it was uh it was interesting. I I and I think Courtney Cox did a really good job.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um I I enjoyed her directing style. I thought it was just just fine.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I thought it I thought it it went really good, it really flowed. Um not nothing really big hiccup wise or anything that made you just kind of like stop what's going on there. Yeah, exactly. Nothing like that. Nothing like that. No, yeah. And of course, naturally, uh her ex-husband David Arquette is a producer on it, so naturally he's in it. So it's like a big big part.
SPEAKER_02No, and it didn't have the even the most interesting character.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, and you know, I was thinking like of of all the characters that were that age to be, that was probably the one. I mean, definitely had the least screen time.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Um definitely and it's probably the one character where you're just like, you know, it's like, yeah, we don't really care about him too much. Not too much. He's just kind of almost background.
SPEAKER_02I just liked it that he wasn't a a mean guy. He was he didn't come over, you know, to get his wife and start to be threatening or anything like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Again, that would have been a cliche. And this I think that was kind of the point with all the characters really trying hard not to have them be cliches.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And uh yeah, it pretty much turned out that way.
SPEAKER_00Probably the main though the main cliche is the bully kids at school. That's kind of like all right, yeah. That's kind of like yeah, and and uh one of those kids, um I didn't realize he was actually in this film, and I was gonna pull him up real quick. Oh that he has actually gone on to actually do a lot more stuff. Um, he was in um his name is Jack Quaid.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, so he was in he's in the show um the um um the boys.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00And uh let's see, he's uh he's in Hunger Games, he's in Scream, uh he's in the movie he's the main in the movie Novokane. Um so he's actually he's turned into like a uh pretty pretty well actor, pretty well known active actor. Yeah. Um I mean he was a he was quite he was a little bit younger when he when he made this, so it wasn't it wasn't his breakout role, but it was definitely on his the earlier path, you know, where he was at. Um but yeah, it was funny, it was like so he was in a in a couple scenes, and then I didn't recognize him first, and then there was a shot of him in the hallway um when they were all being bullies because they're bullies, and I was like, wait a second, is that who that is? And I was like, Oh, wait, that is like There you go. And then once he said something, and I was like, Oh, it's definitely him. I was like, Yeah, without a doubt. But I mean, like we're saying, this film what what did I say, twenty fourteen, I think it was yeah, yeah. So, you know, we're already Well, okay. We're already 12 years old on this film.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Oh gosh. It's like scary to think that. It's like do the math.
SPEAKER_02Do the math.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. But yeah. Um, but yeah, that's why I thought it was really good. Um, I wish that Courtney Cox would actually do a little more for directing.
SPEAKER_02I hope she gets a chance to. I'm sure she's probably picking choosing her projects, whatever.
SPEAKER_00And I um the company that was coming up at the beginning, um, which I'm assuming is her and David's company.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Or at least her or at least her company. So yeah. So when when her when Courtney and David got married, she actually changed her her last name and was hy it was hyphenated.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00And so she was Cox slash, you know, dash Arquette. And then when they got divorced, she dropped the Arquette and went back to being just Courtney Cox. Okay. So that's how I knew at this point this is post them being married.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00But, you know, obviously they still were working together and they're still doing this together. And they've done the screen films and they've done several of those together. And so it's so it's kind of interesting where it's like, okay, so if they uh so I don't know how the dynamic goes for that that company, because obviously they they had a form of production company, um, and it was I believe it was I I thought it was like Co Arquette or something like that or something. Coquette. Coquette, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they just kind of smushed it together.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So that's what I was thinking. It was cock, it's Cox and Arquette and putting them putting them together.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I think so too.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, um, but I don't know of anything anything they'd done or um, but maybe who knows, maybe this was like the only production that they actually um were behind or anything. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Be and but like I said, be interesting. I'll hope like I said, hopefully she does more.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I hope so too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but yeah, um, yeah, so overall pretty good. Would you recomm would you recommend for other people?
SPEAKER_02I would, you know, if you're old enough. Yeah. Yeah. It's not a family movie.
SPEAKER_00You definitely not for the little ones.
SPEAKER_02Definitely not. But uh, but no, no, I think it was it was a nice film and it was uh yeah, it like you know, I said it was like an easy ride.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, not it's not super complicated.
SPEAKER_02No, no, I mean you want to pay attention, but still, I mean you want to pay attention. You don't have to pay attention. Right. You know, it's not one of those movies where it's so complicated, you know, if you don't pay attention, you're gonna miss something, and then you're not gonna know what what's going on.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02You totally will know what's going on. And it's a nice ride, it just kind of takes you right along. So I like it that way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think so too. Yeah, it'd be I think uh I think a lot of people would enjoy it, you know, and and especially if you've already liked Sean William Scott, where he's not so he he was stifler in the American Pie films. Right. And so that was like a really over-the-top kind of character.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And this character is definitely not that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I kind of like seeing that, just kind of g show me a little bit more acting range.
SPEAKER_00Right, right.
SPEAKER_02This is this is and he got a chance to, yeah, really. Oh, absolutely, yeah.
SPEAKER_00He had to do a range, a range of emotions, a range of stuff going on in this one. So yeah, this definitely gotta show more of his chops. So and you know, this not dude where's my car, you know, kind of slaps a comedy that he wasn't, you know. It's like no, it's it's a lot it's a lot more so and that's why I would still classify this as a comedy.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, and I think, you know, it's a drama comedy. So it's definitely yeah, it's you know, I definitely think that that fits the the characterization pretty good.
SPEAKER_02So I think so too.
SPEAKER_00All right. Well, I guess should we go and wrap this one up?
