Have you ever tried to stick to a schedule only to have it hilariously fall apart, especially around the holidays? Carter and Levi are no strangers to this chaos, and with Thanksgiving knocking on our doors, we decided to embrace the madness with a festive-themed episode. We’re talking about our holiday plans—from Levi heading off to Indiana for some family bonding, to Carter's own daunting CrossFit challenge invitation from his sister. Join us as we share a few laughs about childhood games like Uno and our amusing ignorance of classics like Trivial Pursuit. As we chat, you'll get a glimpse of how we plan to dodge family duties just in time for the big meal.
Thanksgiving is more than just turkey and games; it's a time to reflect on gratitude, even when life's a little messy. Together, we navigate the tricky waters of maintaining a positive outlook amidst personal challenges, and how faith and community can play pivotal roles in encouraging thankfulness. We explore the idea of balancing personal desires with a greater purpose, all while celebrating the beauty of life’s ups and downs. And of course, we couldn’t wrap up without diving into the soulful world of gospel music, sharing some of our favorite tracks that bring a sense of spiritual connection. So, pour yourself a cup of holiday cheer, tune in, and let's give thanks for the little moments that make life beautiful.
We love hearing from our listeners whether it's criticism, advice, or just thoughts on the conversation we had. Find us or reach out to us here:

Thanksgiving and Gratitude Podcast Episode
Speaker 1welcome back to another episode of life beside christ podcast we're back I guess yeah , yeah , quick turnaround since the last one for us yeah , we don't have anything to talk about no , we're just gonna ramble and see who listens , I guess yeah yeah no we just , carter , had the idea to get . Well , one week again we've been saying you know , we need to be better about being like on a schedule yeah , and I did not get that last one out on a very consistent in a consistent way at all .
Speaker 1Um but carter called and asked and said hey , you think we should do a thanksgiving uh episode .
Speaker 2I said that's a great idea , brother and here we are doing our thanksgiving episode . Yeah , was it two days before , two days before .
Speaker 1I think that's a before .
Speaker 2I think so too . You don't want to get it recorded too early .
Speaker 1Because , then when you talk about what's going on , that could have been two months ago .
Speaker 2Here we are .
Speaker 1So this will be pretty . It'll probably be a bit shorter than other episodes . Yeah , maybe we like to ramble .
Speaker 2I like to ramble , we're ramblers for sure , like Merle Haggard Sure Come on Go ahead . So you're going to Indiana .
Speaker 1Indiana .
Speaker 2Well , Hoosierville Well .
Speaker 1Is that a ville ? I don't think so . So you're going to Indiana , indiana land .
Speaker 2Well , hoosierville . Well , is that a ville ?
Speaker 1I don't think so . It's just what they call it Hoosier land , indiana land yeah .
Speaker 2If you know , you know .
Speaker 1Come on , feel pretty glonky . Anyways , yeah , anyways , yeah , I'll be going to Indiana Sea Family and Head back and Get myself ready for a wrestling tournament Saturday .
Speaker 2To coach it .
Speaker 1Yeah , you know like .
Speaker 2Get back in shape or something .
Speaker 1Oh , what are you trying to say ?
Speaker 2No , I'm saying after Thanksgiving , after you eat a lot of food , which I assume you do Not just you , I'm saying as a lot of food , which I assume you do Not just you , I'm saying as a lot of . Americans enjoy a lot of food on Thanksgiving . Sure , Are you a one-meal type of person on Thanksgiving ? Do you push off your breakfast lunch ?
Speaker 1I don't eat breakfast most days anyways .
Speaker 3Me neither .
Speaker 1I feel like usually we eat like a two o'clock .
Speaker 2So good yeah , good one meal .
Speaker 1You eat a one meal , then you eat some some light dessert Not too long after , but then you get into the desserts . Yeah , you know when like the late football game starts . Yeah .
Speaker 2Desserts and games and stuff . Yeah , yeah , like trivia or something fun , sure , sure Intense game of Uno or something .
Speaker 1Uno and then lately well with my mom and aunt and I guess other and my aunt's side of the family . They like a good left-right-center game .
Speaker 2And they get their quarters out and they , they play for quarters , but that's always fun yeah , I think we tried to get into the left right center , yeah , or whatever it's called . Yeah , that's something real close to it , I think . Yeah , that's what it's called okay , uh , I don't know , I'm a big , a big guessing game , or if there's a physical part or something of it .
Speaker 1Like some charades .
Speaker 2Maybe yeah , yeah , I really get them guessing , but I'm terrible at guessing .
Speaker 1Whatever happened to the game Seen it ? Did you guys ever play Seen it ? Was that a game that you guys did ?
Speaker 2I feel like I can picture it in my head , but I can't think of what it is .
Speaker 1It was like some questions would be like a movie clip or something like that , like what happened here .
Speaker 2Oh no , no , we've never played that .
Speaker 1It's like did you ever play Trivial Pursuit ?
Speaker 3Nope .
Speaker 1What Okay moving on .
Speaker 2We just come up with our own games .
Speaker 1Kick some cans and stuff Out in Linville yeah .
Speaker 2So you can throw the sticks farther . Yeah , we have some fun , okay .
Speaker 3Yeah , yeah .
Speaker 1That's how we do it . What are you guys up to ?
Speaker 2Oh , I think guys up to . Oh , I think so . Emma wants me to do a crossfit workout thursday at 8 am . Why I don't know . She's very excited and she wants someone to do it with because it's a partner workout just like at home or like going somewhere to do it no , she goes to carriage house crossfit and it's the invite .
Speaker 1A friend yeah , that's how I got suckered in . Yeah , haven't gone back since .
Speaker 2Yeah , I don't plan on doing that for another year . If I do it , there's a time cap of 45 minutes . Oh yeah , so it's , it's gonna be good and it's gonna be cold because you have to go run outside dude are they trying to kill people , or what ?
Speaker 1I think so um and maybe , maybe it's , maybe it's such a high number to to let people like feel like it's attainable , like not feel scared yeah you know , yeah , but it's a lot , it's so much stuff , okay , but I'll show you after .
Speaker 2It's a lot , it's so much stuff , okay , but I'll show you after . It's freaking crazy , okay . So I've got that in the morning . There you go and then I plan on napping and not doing anything . But here's what's going to happen . I'm going to get home at 9 , 9.15 . Then Mom and Dad are going to want me to go grab chairs and tables and all this stuff . So we have this . I mean just a barge of a table in the middle of our house .
Speaker 1Why not get that ready tomorrow ?
Speaker 2I don't want to help at all . If I can get out of it any way I can , I'll just not say anything . I'm busy , I'm so busy tomorrow . I'll just not say anything . I'm busy , I'm so busy tomorrow . I got stuff to do , right , yeah , so someone's going to have to help set up that table and chairs . It's probably a good . I don't know 50 foot , 60 foot , I don't know how far it is . It's a lot of table and chairs , table and you guys have that many people over at your house I think we're pushing .
Speaker 1We're just short of 30 people really be a little crowded in there yeah , yeah , we turn , it'll be too cold to get . Well , actually it won't be terrible yeah I mean it's not warm , but it's not going to be warm , but it's not going to be like this weekend . Right , yeah , we turn the heat off .
Speaker 2You know , with the oven running Got that turkey cooking , All them people in there , the fogs get all fogged up , or the windows get all fogged up the fogs .
Speaker 1get all fogged up them fogs . They really get fogged up .
Speaker 2They get windered up . I'll tell you what . But yeah , it's a good time , yeah , and then , yeah , eat a lot of food , make fun of family , mainly .
Speaker 1I mean that's the real reason . Yeah , Anyways . Yeah , act like we're watching some football , but just trying to think of something , to make fun of somebody , for that's what I enjoy about it , really . You know what ?
Speaker 2Your guys' family is really good at that , and so we are , yeah . Yeah , that's a good point . We we can say some jokes and some not so jokes . I mean , we'll just say it and act like it's a joke , but it's not now to all the family out there , at least I love you .
Speaker 2They're just jokes , okay yeah , yeah , I can't speak for the family , but I love you guys . Thanksgiving Come on . Are you wanting to get into things ? Sure , do you want me to go back into what we talked about last podcast and finish that up ?
Speaker 1then we can get into thanks yeah , we can okay , yeah , that's fine okay yeah , so we kind of finished . We were in matthew 9 , I believe . Yes , we didn't . I think carter had a couple thoughts left to matthew 9 when we got to about an hour in the last episode . So we're going to finish up Matthew 9 here and then get into just some verses of gratitude and giving thanks .
Speaker 3Yeah , some Thanksgiving spirit .
Speaker 2Yeah , okay . So Matthew 9 , it's Jesus heals the blind and mute . So right off the bat , I think of blind as us , because at one point in our lives I'm sure we were blind . I know I was .
Speaker 1Oh , I see what you're saying .
Speaker 2You see where I'm at . Yeah , okay .
Speaker 1So not literally , like I can't see the hand in front of me my faith . Gotcha .
Speaker 2Yeah , speaking like that . You know how I don't speak like that . And now I am .
Speaker 3Yeah , I got you .
Speaker 2So I'll just read a little section here .
Speaker 3Gotcha .
Speaker 2And it says I'll just read to my point . I'll read all of it to my point . As Jesus went on from there , two blind men followed him , calling out have mercy on us , son of David . When he had gone indoors , the blind men came out to him . He asked them , or ? And he asked them Do you believe that I am able to do this ? Yes , lord , they replied . Then he touched their eyes and said According to your faith , will it be done to you ? Yeah , and their sight was restored . Jesus warned them sternly See that no one knows about this . But they went out and spread the news about him all over the region . That's what I was confused about . Did that go in the thing you ?
Speaker 1know I stopped listening . I'm sorry you're good sorry , we can let me find it , because I have that open to something .
Speaker 2See that no one knows about this , but they went out and spread the news about him all over that region . So is that disobeying Jesus' word or order ? Or is that a good thing that they're spreading the word about it ? Because he specifically said see that no one knows about this .
Speaker 1Yeah , I don't know if I have an answer for that . I think that happens a couple of times where he says that to people , I guess . So in my head , when he had said it before , it was before he , I guess , like really showed people kind of who he was before the Sermon on the Mount , before he performed his first public miracle , I guess .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 1And he was like it's not time for me to show myself , but at this point , from the way I understand it , we're in Matthew 9 . At this point , he has people know who he is .
Speaker 2Yeah , and some of the stuff he does is kind of , hey , let's go to this quiet place and get some rest or something you know where . He's kind of still spreading the word , but looking for those places that are not as populated . Yeah , yeah , I was not ready for you to ask me .
Speaker 1Yeah , yeah , I was not ready for you to ask me that .
Speaker 2And maybe it's .
Speaker 1But I don't know . There are a couple things I guess . So reading past that , it says while they were going out , a man who was demon-possessed could not walk or could not talk and a demon was driven out . The crowd was amazed and nothing like this had ever been seen in Israel . But the Pharisee said it is by the prince of demons that he drives out demons .
Speaker 1So I guess , maybe I assume , those two . I mean it's in the same section of Matthew 9 . So maybe Jesus knew that it being public there , that maybe not , I don't know Right now I'm just guessing that something like that being spread would maybe do more harm than good . Knowing , if he knew that the Pharisees were going to be very like . This guy is no good . Rather than being like okay , is he actually saying this ? Yeah , so like .
Speaker 3I don't know . Yeah , not a question for me right now .
Speaker 1Yeah , I hope to be there someday where I'm like yeah , I understand .
Speaker 2Yeah , well , maybe it's a research and get back to yeah , and maybe some of our scholars in the yeah , I'm going to have to look at this after In the group .
Speaker 1We're done recording now .
Speaker 2Email us or something . Do you have something ?
Speaker 1No , I don't think I have anything to wrap up , matthew 9 , if that's what you mean .
Speaker 2Yep , I think I'm good with 9 now yeah now that we don't have any answers . Yeah , now that we're left on a cliffhanger .
Speaker 1We just read a little bit and not explain anything .
Speaker 2Yeah it's like here you guys go .
Speaker 1Figure it out .
Speaker 2Here's your thought for the week or two weeks or month , I don't know , who knows . Yeah , week or two weeks or month .
Speaker 3I don't know .
Speaker 1Who knows , yeah , yeah , I don't know , I guess going into some giving of the thanks .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 1And some gratitude . The verse that I came across first , I believe and I think I'm the 1C the church we've been going to did their sermon largely on it last week , or at least I went on Thursday night and it was about giving thanks . So I think I'm kind of stealing part of that , which isn't bad , I don't think . But if anyone else goes to that church it's kind of a reiteration of part of what their message was . But the verse that I came across was 1 Thessalonians 5.18 . It says Give thanks in all circumstances , for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus , and I think that's pretty plain In any situation , give thanks . And that's one of those it's easy to read and say to yourself like , yeah , just you know , give thanks to everything . But in the moments , in all circumstances , it's easy , when things are feeling good , or like you're happy , like , or like when you're in a , like when you're surrounded by family .
Speaker 1on thanksgiving , it's going to be easy to be like oh , I'm thankful for being around my family compared to on a day that you're not feeling great like being thankful for situation that you're in , even if something you know just it just wasn't your day , yeah hurry getting a car wreck , whatever , you know , anything messes up your schedule , yeah and or just something as as silly as not being able to get your coffee and being on time , or something like that you drop the rest of your coffee or something .
Speaker 1Yeah , so I think that's one thing and it made me think of . One of the big points that they made in their message was that giving thanks plays a big part in your attitude , and this is something I kind of remember hearing growing up too . It's like if you look for the negative , you're going to find the negative .
Speaker 1If you look for the positive , you're going to find the positive . So if you look for things to be grateful for , you're going to realize that there are more things in your life that you are thankful for . If you're like , ah , this again , I just can't get along with this person . Whatever , I don't know , I can't think of something else right now .
Speaker 1If you're looking for that more , you're never not never but you're overlooking probably a lot of the things that we should be grateful for . I know ever , but you're overlooking probably a lot of the things that we should be grateful for . And I know I'm . It's easier for me to be positive for other people . I think that's probably common for a lot of people .
Embracing Gratitude and Thankfulness
Speaker 1I am hard-headed . I think I'm very like pessimistic with yeah , and that's part of my overthinking .
Speaker 2I think about golf . I mean , I'll be playing terrible . You're like dude , you're fine , just hit it straighter . You say it genuinely Dude , you're fine , don't worry about it . And then you hit one bad shot . It's like I'm freaking playing terrible . I'm about to quit . Yeah , I'm about to quit . Yeah , I'm going to throw this club into that pond . Hey Carter , you're all right dude ? Yeah , I did . You're playing so good .
Speaker 1It is easier to be positive for other people .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 1And try to bump other people up .
Speaker 3Mm-hmm , that's what I think . That's an attitude thing , yeah .
Speaker 1And it's just like I know that's an attitude thing . Yeah , and it's just like I know that's something I struggle with . I don't always have . I very often don't have a great attitude about things .
Speaker 2So what I'm saying is I probably limit the things that I'm thankful for or realize that I should be thankful for Just on your outlook , yeah , which I think that's what , whenever we had Adam on , he brought up having that friend group that does point that out and that , in that case , does compliment your golf game , or whatever it is you know , if you look at your faith and your journey in life as a golf game , then I guess you could connect it that way , but yeah , just having people around you that do bring you up and make you .
Speaker 2Not make you , but let you see the good and things you can be grateful for in life right .
Speaker 1I think part of it too is I've noticed I've been better about it lately um , and I maybe that's part of just growing up and , I guess , maturing in some sense , but even not in a repetitive I don't think in a repetitive way , but in prayer . A lot of times , almost every time , I'll start like thank you God for this day , like another opportunity to grow closer to you and things that I have and those kind of things . That's not exactly that , but along those lines . That's how a lot of my prayers start now , I guess . But also just like I guess , um , slowing down in situations in my head like hunting has been one of those where I'm like , okay , I'm not seeing deer , but like look at , look at this .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 1Like it's still pretty cool to be able one to be able to be out here but also just to be in God's creation every day .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 1No matter where I'm at , whether I'm in the woods or driving to see family or somewhere , I don't want to be , um , just realizing that , hey , it's a pretty cool place we got here and things that , uh , that , all these things that god has given us and the opportunities that he's given us . And another thing is like in the in that verse , too , is for this is God's . Will I always go back to that , like I know I want some things to go the way like I want it to in my head , but the way I want it in my head isn't probably hardly ever what it's going to be and that's that's , that's okay , like that's and that's okay , that should be okay and that we should want God's will , and God knows our hearts , so he's not going to be against our .
Speaker 1I don't know . I was going to say that I was going to sound bad . I was going to say our wants , but not like , not necessarily our sinful wants or desires , but just he knows our heart is what I'm saying .
Speaker 2Yeah , I don't . I mean not saying you can't have wants . I think praying about that and thinking about it is important , having that relationship , thinking about it is important , having that relationship , but just remembering that it is God's will . It's not up to us . We can want these things and all these usually materialistic things , for me at least . And do I need it ? No , not at all . But I've gotten some things . I don't know if that's a good thing or not .
Speaker 1Things I think about , though , too , is , I realize after the fact , I guess this is something I've been praying for , and now it's kind of in front of me , but then there's these little wrinkles . That's like wait a minute , he couldn't have like taken that part out or left that alone . But that's God's will .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1And things are putting your way for a reason .
Speaker 2Yeah , that's something I've tried to remind myself is , when I do pray for these things , remember to give thanks and be grateful that you are blessed and all this stuff , because I'll pray for it and then something will happen . I'll be like , yes , let's go . And I don't go back to God and be like thank you . Without you , there's no way that happens .
Speaker 1Right . Or for me like I think of stuff doing it regularly , like if I , you know , if it's something I prayed for , just something that happens , that I'm like this is um , in my eyes what I wanted , or like I don't know any situation is like I may do it that night or pray for it , or like give thanks in prayer that night or something like that , but not revisit that even though I'm still I don't know .
Speaker 2Yeah .
Speaker 1Kind of rambling .
Speaker 2Still kind of struggling or wanting that . Whatever it is , yeah , from uh , your life and where god you're trying to have god fix it , and it's like , okay , I'm I'm not getting better at it , but I'm I kind of losing hope .
Speaker 1Yeah , I mean it can be like even like health , yeah , like with Mason , or even like my sister's twins , like getting news that things are looking okay , you know , and like praying and like giving thanks for that , but then not kind of revisiting the thanks for that .
Speaker 2Yeah , it's hard to do , I guess , because I feel like we lose focus of what's important , which is god . So we get caught up in life where we do forget about all these important things and we think other things are just as important and they're not . So to just have your eyes on god as much as you can is important . Which is what I'm working on is just getting more consistent with prayer and right , getting in the bible more , because I do struggle with that . Um , but tomorrow's a new day . Yeah , try and be better um , yeah , and then .
Speaker 1So another part that I that I thought was interesting , that this was straight from the sermon that she had brought up and that .
Speaker 1So she was reading from the Last Supper and I don't know , I can't remember which book she was reading out of , but I'm going to read it out of .
Speaker 1Matthew Says while they were eating , jesus took bread and when he had given thanks , he broke it and gave it to his disciples , saying take and eat , this is my body .
Speaker 1Then he took the cup and he had given thanks , he gave it and when he had given thanks , he had gave it to them , saying drink from it all of you . This is my blood of the covenant , which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins . I tell you I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until the day that I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom . So it was like she pointed out that we should be giving thanks for even the littlest things and she said the things that are right in front of you . If you look at that part , the bread and wine were right in front of Jesus and it's like they all knew that they were going to be eating that night and it's like like , yeah , instead of giving thanks for everything that the disciples had done at that point which I'm sure he did it was thanks for this bread and this wine that we can share with each other .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 1But like she was bringing up that giving thanks for even bread and this wine that we can share with each other yeah , but like she was bringing up that giving thanks for even the things that are right in front of us , the smaller things that maybe we have on a daily basis . And we kind of just grow used to having and not realizing that it is a blessing to have that or be a part of this or that , whatever it is .
Speaker 3Yeah .
Speaker 1Which I thought was an interesting outlook .
Speaker 2That's how I should start looking at stuff . If you do think about that , I've got a lot to be thankful for . I mean just the smallest stuff . I knew that in any way .
Speaker 1Right yeah .
Speaker 2But if you think about it like that , it's like I could go on for days . I mean , the list is endless which is just being blessed and I don't deserve it , but God has blessed me with it and I give thanks for that , I guess . Yeah , thanksgiving come on .
Speaker 1So that's all I had , what you got .
Speaker 2So I went into Psalm 100 . Shout for joy to the Lord all the earth . Worship the Lord with gladness . Come before him with joyful songs . Know that the Lord is good . It is he who made us and we are his . So and his love endures forever . His faithfulness continues through all generations . So enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise . I mean just being thankful and praising the Lord for all that you have and all that he's blessed you with . And I thought it was kind of funny . Come before him with joyful songs .
Gratitude and Thankfulness Reflection
Speaker 2We've talked about that in church , where it's like I don't know if I'm a singing in public kind of person and I don't think you really have to , but it's just another way of praising him and could be giving thanks and all that . So singing those gospel songs on the way here from Randy Travis .
Speaker 2I feel , a little better . I don't know . I do feel connected with God whenever I do sing gospel songs and I didn't , but as of recently I've gotten more into it . But I'm not a good singer , so I'm not going to do it in front of people .
Speaker 1Go ahead . So that brings us to our next segment where Carter is going to start doing a completely solo acapella .
Speaker 2Yeah no music no beat .
Speaker 1Because acapella that doesn't mean group does it , it just means without .
Speaker 3I don't know .
Speaker 2That'll have to be our next segment .
Speaker 1Yeah , carter's singing , so go ahead , take it away .
Speaker 2I gotta think of something . Okay , that wraps up our segment .
Speaker 1We'll try again next time . Yeah , yeah sorry , I didn't know if you had any . Yeah , yeah , sorry , I didn't know if you had any other thoughts .
Speaker 2Nope , that's about it . Yeah , psalm for giving thanks is what it's called .
Speaker 1Yeah , sorry , I had another thought while you were reading that , so I'm sorry I didn't add a bunch .
Speaker 2No , you're good .
Speaker 1But it made me think of , or just this topic in general . It made me think of how easy and how often we , if someone gives us something , because I was thinking all the classes like as they left today for me , like leaving the gym , so make sure you tell your parents thank you for cooking the dinner or whatever they do for you , like whoever cooks the food for you , on thanksgiving and all that stuff . So I was thinking about that and I was like you know , we it's we get , we say thanks to people all the time they hold the door for us , thanks , they give us a cup of water or whatever it's like . How often we say thanks . I would say most people , um , say thanks for stuff like that . Yeah , but like we probably do that , I would say I say thanks to other people more than I say thanks to God .
Speaker 3Yeah , and that's Wow .
Speaker 1That's not good .
Speaker 2Yeah , that made me feel terrible . That's a really good point actually .
Speaker 1And it's like , with Christmas coming up too , it's , like you know , giving gifts and like getting gifts . Yeah , it's easy , like someone's right in front of you to say thanks , but just always got to remind ourselves to give thanks to God in all circumstances .
Speaker 2And even like I think about just hanging out with you and Brady . Like every time we leave , it's like thanks for coming to hang out . I don't say that to God .
Speaker 1Like . Hey , thanks for listening to me .
Speaker 2Yeah , just being here , maybe I should that would be a good thing to start saying Huh , that's funny . I like that thought . That made me feel terrible .
Speaker 3I know I was thinking the same thing , that's good , I mean , that'll fix me Part of me .
Speaker 2Yeah , huh , yeah , that's a good thought .
Speaker 3Thanks man , you're welcome .
Speaker 2Hopefully the crowd stuck along long enough to hear that ?
Speaker 1Yeah , that's true , a little bit shorter tonight , and then we'll wrap it up with the . Can you give us a couple songs here ?
Speaker 2Yeah , wrap it up with a couple songs here . You can go every other . How many do you have ?
Speaker 1I don't have any . This is all you , brother .
Speaker 2Yeah , I'll just take it over . Sing along with Carter , yeah .
Speaker 1No , that segment's over . This is a new segment , okay .
Speaker 2So for my Randy Travis people don't ever sell your saddle Banger . Randy Travis , Drive Another Nail . That song's fire . Give it a listen . And then , who's Mercy Me , sang by Don't know , okay , well , the song is called Mercy Me . Let me look it up real quick and it's really good . They made a movie about the group and the guy that sang it and it's an okay movie .
