21st - 27th August Wrestling History!

21st August
2000:
Lita defeated Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley to win the WWE Women’s title. This match was the first time in history that a women’s match main-evented Monday Night Raw.

22nd August
1999:
A highly eventful WWE SummerSlam event took place. The main event saw Mankind defeat champion ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and Triple H in a triple threat match officiated by Minnesota governor Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura.

23rd August

1999:
The night after SummerSlam, Triple H won his first WWE Championship when he defeated Mankind on ‘Raw Is War’. Mankind’s reign lasted less than 24 hours and would prove to be Mick Foley’s last WWE Championship reign.

24th August

1994:
WCW presented Clash Of The Champions XXVIII at the Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The event was historic for a couple of reasons. The card was headlined by the first ever singles match between Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair. Flair won the match by countout. Additionally, Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat defeated Steve Austin to win the WCW United States Championship. Steamboat however suffered a back injury in this bout that forced him into retirement and this would be his last wrestling match until his three-match WWE comeback

25th August

2002:

WWE SummerSlam 2002 took place at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. At the event, Brock Lesnar became the then youngest WWE Champion of all time when he defeated The Rock just a month after his 25th debut and less than six months after his WWE debut. Also, Shawn Michaels took part in his first WWE match since WrestleMania XIV in 1998 when he faced and defeated HHH in an Unsanctioned Street Fight. Michaels would subsequently return again to win the World Heavyweight Championship in the first Elimination Chamber match at Survivor Series the same year. He would then wrestle a full-time TV schedule until his retirement in 2010.

26th August

1991:
SummerSlam took place at Madison Square Garden on this date with the tagline ‘A Match Made In Heaven, A Match Made In Hell.’ The first part related to the in-ring wedding of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth whereas the latter was Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior vs. Sgt. Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa & General Adnan. It also featured Bret Hart winning his first ever Intercontinental Championship.

27th August

1995:
Triple H (then known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley) made his in-ring PPV debut at Summerslam on this date in which he pinned Bob Holly following a Pedigree. On the same show the man under the Kane mask, Glenn Jacobs, also made his debut, albeit it as demonic dentist called Isaac Yankem DDS.
