Written and recorded by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community.

Cascades Female Factory is located on the traditional homelands of the muwinina people.

We acknowledge the muwinina people, the traditional owners of the Land upon which we work, and we pay our respect to Aboriginal Elders; past and present. We respect all Tasmanian Aboriginal people, their culture and their rights as the first peoples of lutruwita. We recognise and value Aboriginal histories, knowledge and lived experiences and commit to being culturally inclusive and respectful in our working relationships with all Aboriginal people.

If at Cascades Female Factory, we recommend listening to this chapter in the Visitor Centre (stop 1).

pulingina milaythina Pakana taymi ningina raytji

(Welcome to unceded/stolen Aboriginal land)

pulingina NIPALUNA-TU, TIMTUMILI MINANYA-TA, LUTRUWITA-TI!

Welcome – to NIPALUNA on TIMTUMILI MINANYA (Derwent River) in lutruwita (Tasmania)!

The Cascade Female Factory is built on the traditional homelands of the muwinina People. The muwinina were one of the first Nations of lutruwita to be displaced from their precious Country as a result of invasion and colonisation.

milaythina-mana-mapali; ngayapi-mana-mapali.

milaythina munatiya; waranta tangara milatyhina

milaythina rrala; waranta, Pakana-nara rrala.

Our country is our life, and she needs her People, as we do her.

If country is suffering, we suffer,

If country is strong and healthy, then we, her people are strong and healthy.

For the pakana community, connection with Country is as important now, as it was to our Ancestors; and although so much of our country is under tar and cement, the memories and knowledges of our Ancestors are still here.

We are connected – in the knowledge of all that has come before; in the knowledge of how Muyini and Rrumitina, two stars in the sky, made Palawa, the first black man; how the mountains/rivers/islands were cut; in the knowledge of the ways in which the Ancestors cared for AND lived with country. In the knowledge that we COME FROM this country; Our languages come from Country - including the names of places. When we talk about ‘country’ it is not just land. Country is also MILAYTHINA MUKA, sea country, and the waterways, and MILAYTHINA WURANGKILI, Sky country from beneath the earth to the sky.

milaythina nika Waranta Pakana; waranta Pakana milaythina nika.

(we are the land, the land is us)
