[Bricktown Toine]:

Are you ready for the thrill of your life?

[Stew]:

There's something very scary about that.

[Candace]:

That was actually very creepy.

[Stew]:

Yeah, very creepy.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So is Detroit.

[Candace]:

Touche,

[Bricktown Toine]:

This could be

[Candace]:

depending

[Bricktown Toine]:

a great

[Candace]:

on where

[Bricktown Toine]:

podcast

[Candace]:

you were.

[Bricktown Toine]:

today.

[Candace]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, no, that's a lot. It's a lot of buildings that he's like, this is where horror movies look like they could be filmed.

[Stew]:

Hehehehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

It's a very beautiful city.

[Candace]:

It depends

[Bricktown Toine]:

Seriously. I

[Candace]:

on

[Bricktown Toine]:

mean

[Candace]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

that.

[Candace]:

alley you went down. I mean...

[Stew]:

Word.

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

would- alleys and cuts, de quinder cut? like,

[Candace]:

Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

just legitimately

[Candace]:

shout

[Bricktown Toine]:

up in

[Candace]:

out,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the cut?

[Candace]:

shout out to the cut. I definitely was going to shout that out later, but

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh no, we need to talk about our time in the Quinta

[Candace]:

I love

[Bricktown Toine]:

cut.

[Candace]:

the, I love the, I love the early shout out to it for sure.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Hey, well, welcome to the Lunch Break podcast. Episode 21, technically, but this is what? Season two, episode one. We

[Candace]:

Wait,

[Bricktown Toine]:

made

[Candace]:

this is

[Bricktown Toine]:

it.

[Candace]:

episode 21?

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, this

[Candace]:

Wow.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is a lot of look. So a lot of progress, a lot of firsts. We have our first female woman guests.

[Stew]:

Yes,

[Bricktown Toine]:

We have our

[Stew]:

we're

[Bricktown Toine]:

first,

[Stew]:

growing.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah, we are growing. This is

[Stew]:

Hehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

our first episode of season two. We have a new format. This is kicking off a format where we will have our friends with us every single episode of season two. So Stu, any upfront reflections or thoughts about season two before we introduce our wonderful, tremendous and impactful in this world guest?

[Stew]:

I'm excited to get stories from other people. So I'm looking forward to that point of view and different vantage points. So I'm excited Candice that you're here and I love the topic fair this week. So I'm excited to get into it. Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is all about Detroit today. And that's the dope thing about season two. And also Stu wanna know, people wanna hear more from you too.

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So quiet in my voice a bit, season two we're getting other perspectives in. So just throwing it out there on the front end, man. But season two was all about our friends and our travels with our friends. And what better way to start than our most recent trip together in Detroit for my baby shower. But we ended up having a local take us around the entire time. And that local is Candice. Candice P. AKA

[Stew]:

I'm sorry.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Tumeric, one half, affectually known as Tumeric by maybe only me, one half of the Spice Rack. So

[Stew]:

What happened?

[Bricktown Toine]:

that's the Spice Rack, Tumeric and Paprika, man. That's

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Stew]:

sorry.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Spice Rack. So if you all may remember, it was at 10, 11

[Stew]:

Bad

[Bricktown Toine]:

episodes

[Stew]:

name.

[Bricktown Toine]:

ago, episode 10, we did our financial stewardship episode with our other bestie, Mike Hayes. And this is the other half of Mike Spice Rack, Tumeric, but she is much more than Mike's other half. Um, Candice is a black woman executive and just pausing there, like clap it up again, man.

[Stew]:

Got to.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Those of you who are not in our visual community, although she is fair skin and has some blonde in her hair, she is a black woman. Candace is, she is obviously so, phenotypically

[Stew]:

She's

[Bricktown Toine]:

so.

[Stew]:

wearing

[Bricktown Toine]:

Candace

[Stew]:

a blue sweatshirt.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is, right,

[Stew]:

We gotta do that on calls.

[Bricktown Toine]:

look, visual descriptors, man. Look,

[Stew]:

Lions.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Stu is

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

exercising that DEI stuff. She's repping

[Stew]:

it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

her lion's family, the Detroit lions. And Candace is a, so back to the black woman executive, right, and we know, I think it's from a CEO level, only 1% of Fortune 500 CEOs are black women. And- While Candice is not a CEO, if she desires to be, we absolutely believe that Candice can be one day, but she's filling the pipeline even right now and what she's doing is huge, man. So she is a, let me make sure I'm getting this right, region warehouse director at a huge, very well-known and reputable consumer packaged goods brand. She is over 65 warehouses in eight states. Is that like, yeah, you've got a lot

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

of purviews.

[Stew]:

Wow,

[Bricktown Toine]:

So,

[Candace]:

brown there, yeah.

[Stew]:

that's a

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Stew]:

lot.

[Bricktown Toine]:

scheduling. So we are scheduling over our collective lunch break, even though today is kinda sorta quasi holiday, Zan is working today. So thank you for joining us on the lunch break, Candice. Anything you wanna say on the front end as the person who brought us or showed us around this fantastic city of Detroit.

[Candace]:

No, I'm excited. I was like, this is episode 21 because my basketball number was 21 all through

[Stew]:

Oh,

[Candace]:

college.

[Stew]:

wait.

[Candace]:

So that's crazy. Like this was,

[Bricktown Toine]:

She's

[Candace]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

just

[Candace]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

gonna

[Candace]:

like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

slightly

[Candace]:

wow, that's 21?

[Bricktown Toine]:

drop, so...

[Stew]:

Oops.

[Candace]:

Wow.

[Stew]:

Ha ha ha.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Just slightly drop that. Like Candice was, you know, she went to Piston's camp every week or something. I'm like,

[Stew]:

Every week.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's just... It's just flexing. I don't know what people

[Candace]:

No,

[Bricktown Toine]:

in Detroit

[Candace]:

never.

[Bricktown Toine]:

do, man.

[Candace]:

Definitely not Pistons Camp, but there's definitely some gyms that if you were a Hooper, you played in a couple of times.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh, so

[Candace]:

But

[Bricktown Toine]:

tell

[Candace]:

no,

[Bricktown Toine]:

us about

[Candace]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

where

[Candace]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

they

[Candace]:

excited.

[Bricktown Toine]:

would know you from.

[Stew]:

Yeah, I was about

[Bricktown Toine]:

I mean,

[Stew]:

to

[Bricktown Toine]:

no,

[Stew]:

say,

[Bricktown Toine]:

big

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

yourself

[Stew]:

just,

[Bricktown Toine]:

up. Like you knew me around

[Stew]:

they know

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Stew]:

about

[Bricktown Toine]:

city.

[Stew]:

me.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Everybody knew Tumeric's

[Candace]:

No,

[Bricktown Toine]:

crossover.

[Candace]:

no,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Stew]:

You

[Bricktown Toine]:

hit

[Stew]:

know

[Bricktown Toine]:

you

[Stew]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

with the

[Stew]:

I'm saying?

[Bricktown Toine]:

one too.

[Candace]:

I'm just saying no,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'm known around the city.

[Candace]:

I mean

[Bricktown Toine]:

Candice,

[Candace]:

there were a

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Candace]:

couple

[Bricktown Toine]:

have a

[Candace]:

of

[Bricktown Toine]:

question.

[Candace]:

newspaper articles for sure,

[Stew]:

Fair.

[Candace]:

but.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh, no, we can get into the newspaper articles, all the clippings, but I do have a question. Thinking about hooping, you mentioned hooping, thinking about competition. Why is Detroit, explain Detroit versus everybody to me. I won't say why is Detroit

[Stew]:

Great

[Bricktown Toine]:

such

[Stew]:

question.

[Bricktown Toine]:

an aggressive city. I'll ask that question on the front end. Just explain it

[Candace]:

Wow,

[Bricktown Toine]:

to us.

[Candace]:

I've actually never been asked that question. And I can only answer it through like Candice's lens. So I can't answer it through like the company's lens. But I think through my lens, like, and this is why I get so excited for people to come because it has like a bad rap for no reason. Like, and so for

[Bricktown Toine]:

You

[Candace]:

us.

[Bricktown Toine]:

know, it's a really aggressive stance to be introduced to when you first get there is Detroit

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

versus everybody. Like,

[Candace]:

But

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's not welcoming.

[Candace]:

I mean, it's not, but I mean, Detroit's been put like negatively out in the public eye for so long. Like it's the only way it's going to change is us changing it, right? Or like us sticking

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm. Mm.

[Candace]:

together versus everybody else. So like, I mean, definitely like I, that's so funny because literally like all weekend I've been wearing this backpack.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So

[Stew]:

On deck.

[Bricktown Toine]:

those of

[Candace]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

you

[Candace]:

in

[Bricktown Toine]:

who

[Candace]:

this

[Bricktown Toine]:

are

[Candace]:

fanny

[Bricktown Toine]:

not going

[Candace]:

pack,

[Bricktown Toine]:

to watch

[Candace]:

this fanny

[Bricktown Toine]:

on

[Candace]:

pack.

[Bricktown Toine]:

all of you who may not watch on YouTube can just held up a Detroit versus everybody fanny pack. And I mean, but it's fantastic branding one.

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Stew]:

love

[Bricktown Toine]:

also

[Stew]:

it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'll say I had Detroit f'd up. I love Detroit. Let me say that on the front end and I absolutely will be back. I had a blast and a good portion of that is because you showed us around.

[Stew]:

That's true.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But

[Candace]:

I can't

[Bricktown Toine]:

that.

[Candace]:

tell you the number of times literally guys like that, like people like, Oh, where are you from? And I'll be like, Oh, I'm from Detroit. And it's like instant, like negative, like not

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

even like the willingness to understand anything positive about it. It's just negative. And then you've never even been there. Like you, you don't know what are you like you're reading a news article. Like, yeah, I mean, it's like every other city, but it's so much more than that. So I mean, yeah, I think the whole What I love about the Detroit versus everybody thing is that people were so upset that it was like Detroit versus everybody that people wanted to like go see why is Detroit versus everybody. And so

[Stew]:

Right.

[Candace]:

then like now, but then everybody wants to try to like use it. Then you got all these other versus everybody shirts. It's like,

[Stew]:

Now we know where it started.

[Candace]:

okay, cool.

[Stew]:

We know where it started.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

I like really black cities. Detroit is a very black city

[Bricktown Toine]:

It's

[Stew]:

and

[Bricktown Toine]:

a very

[Stew]:

I've really

[Bricktown Toine]:

black city.

[Stew]:

enjoyed

[Bricktown Toine]:

No,

[Stew]:

my time there.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah, and that's the thing,

[Stew]:

The family

[Bricktown Toine]:

right?

[Stew]:

reunion

[Bricktown Toine]:

I don't,

[Stew]:

city.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I wish I looked this up. I chose to look up the wrong stat. No, it was still the right stat, but you know I like to have a stat all the time, Stu. So I went

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

with the black women executive stat, but I should have looked up the percentage of black people in Detroit. I can make up some stuff about Detroit. Like I learned

[Stew]:

Thank

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Stew]:

you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Detroit in 1812 was founded by Charles Buick.

[Stew]:

Hahaha

[Bricktown Toine]:

Like she's making up stuff, but I

[Candace]:

Beewick.

[Bricktown Toine]:

don't know the truth. So I know for a fact. that so based on what you just said though, Candice about Detroit versus everybody, what I'm interpreting that as is it's more, it's defensive, it's not offensive. So at first I was thinking it was like, Detroit, look, we going on the offensive, it's us versus everybody, but it sounds like it's a reaction to people talking about the city terribly, the articles that have come out, people just not being willing to be stewed at culturally curious thing we've been talking

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

about

[Stew]:

right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

to actually go and find out what that city and its people are really about.

[Candace]:

I think it's a little bit of both, but like I said, like when I think about Detroit versus everybody, like that's how I have internalized it, but also to that end, it's like, it's a conversation starter. Like it's literally like, oh, well, like, what is this about? Like, why is it, you know, whatever. And so then you get to like kind of, kind of talk about it, but like just my personal experiences, cause I haven't lived in Detroit since high school. So my personal experiences, right, being in everywhere else and like constantly bringing up Detroit, like that's been the conversation. So I mean, I think it's a little bit buff, but I'm sure like the creator of the brand be like, nah, she was like way wrong. But that's Candace's interpretation.

[Stew]:

Hahaha.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Well, I appreciate your interpretation of your mindset. Stu, what

[Stew]:

Real

[Bricktown Toine]:

do you

[Stew]:

quick

[Bricktown Toine]:

think

[Stew]:

before

[Bricktown Toine]:

when you

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

get...

[Stew]:

get very deep,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Go ahead.

[Stew]:

according to the US Census, Detroit is 77.9% Black. We can round that up to 78%.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that's overwhelmingly

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

black.

[Stew]:

a very Black city.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And I don't mean that, like I mean that literally percentage wise, not like

[Stew]:

No, I got you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

in experience. But when you think about it though, cause they call Philly the city of brotherly love, and not necessarily that that's, I don't believe that that's specifically tied to brothers when you say brotherly love, but Philly was like,

[Stew]:

The brothers.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Philly's like 58 to 60 some odd percent black. And that was one of the blackest cities I've ever lived in. Obviously I've lived in Seattle, so it's a big difference than some of the other cities.

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But when you, 70 what percent?

[Stew]:

77.9, 78%.

[Candace]:

What year, that's this year?

[Stew]:

Last July, July 1st, 2022.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Black woman executive asked for it, the full recitation

[Candace]:

No, I didn't.

[Bricktown Toine]:

of the

[Stew]:

But

[Bricktown Toine]:

fact.

[Stew]:

Paul,

[Bricktown Toine]:

So

[Stew]:

I'm LA. Ha

[Bricktown Toine]:

which

[Stew]:

ha

[Bricktown Toine]:

year?

[Stew]:

ha.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Okay. And, and which public, which periodical

[Candace]:

That current,

[Bricktown Toine]:

said that?

[Candace]:

are those current numbers?

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe

[Candace]:

Right, where'd you pull that? No, I'm just kidding.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But you feel that,

[Candace]:

No.

[Bricktown Toine]:

um, you absolutely feel that. And I, one of the things I loved about Detroit was that love and familiarity. Like I didn't now I wasn't everywhere. We were only there for about like 24 to 36 hours,

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

or at least I

[Stew]:

Something

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Candace]:

it

[Stew]:

like

[Bricktown Toine]:

personally.

[Candace]:

was

[Stew]:

that.

[Candace]:

a short

[Bricktown Toine]:

So

[Candace]:

time.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I can't say that I have the largest breadth or depth of. Detroit, but from what I've seen and what I experienced. We were walking around Detroit in the city at one o'clock in the morning on a Saturday, so we got to experience Detroit. And

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

we'll talk about it here, but it's a wild city and I loved everything about that

[Stew]:

Thanks for watching!

[Bricktown Toine]:

wild city. All right, so, Candice, you said you haven't lived there since you were 18, you live in DC now, your family still lives there. Even maybe we should start on the family note, right? Because we came there because my, so my wife is from Flint, Michigan. which is about an hour outside of Detroit. I've never been to Michigan before. So I didn't even know how far

[Candace]:

Oh

[Bricktown Toine]:

Flint

[Candace]:

wow.

[Bricktown Toine]:

was from Detroit. Yeah, this was my first time coming to Michigan. I maybe flew through Detroit Wayne at one point in time, but never left the airport. So first experience in Michigan, I land, I'm in Detroit. The first place y'all tell me to arrive at is a sloppy crap. So it was like just that in and of itself. Like that was my first introduction

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

to Detroit.

[Stew]:

going to go.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But we're there for family as baby shower weekend, get there on Saturday, baby showers on Sunday, Father's Day. So, and I was asking about family, sorry. So on the family note, like, you know, it's one you're showing us around the city and then I had the opportunity, I don't recall if Stu got to meet your folks, but

[Candace]:

I don't think

[Stew]:

I

[Candace]:

so.

[Stew]:

didn't.

[Bricktown Toine]:

introducing friends to not only your city but also your family is a lot. So I wanna know what that was like for you. And especially like, let's be honest, we're all friends here. I'm a weirdo. So the idea

[Candace]:

you

[Bricktown Toine]:

of introducing me to family has gotta be a little stressful. Like,

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I don't know what Sam's gonna be dressed as, how he's gonna react. So what was that like showing us around the city, introducing us to fans?

[Candace]:

I think for me it was not stressful at all. I think hopefully you guys know that by now there are, like family is very important to me,

[Stew]:

Okay.

[Candace]:

right? So whenever I go home, whatever I do, whoever I bring, my family is gonna be included because I'm not home all the time, right? So

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

I have to, what's been difficult for me as I've grown up not living there is, balancing out like coming home and wanting to be with my family all the time, but still like do things with like friends that, you know, I have that are there. And I know that I have not done a great job of that growing up. Um, but I try, I'm trying to do better. Um, but I think for me, like my family is such a huge part of me. It's like, if you really are in my circle, like you're going to meet my family. And Candidly, I just think my family's dope. So I just want to introduce everybody

[Stew]:

You should.

[Candace]:

to my family. But whenever I have friends that are coming into the city, it's not even a thought about meeting my family. Because honestly, if I have to question whether you can meet me, or I'm apprehensive about you meeting my family, there's a reason why I'm apprehensive.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm. Yeah,

[Candace]:

And

[Bricktown Toine]:

why

[Candace]:

then

[Bricktown Toine]:

am I friends with you?

[Candace]:

I start thinking, should I even be friends with you? So yeah, so I mean, it's like the first time Mike came to Dre, he met my whole family. Like it was for my

[Bricktown Toine]:

Well,

[Candace]:

birthday. He met

[Bricktown Toine]:

this

[Candace]:

my

[Bricktown Toine]:

was my first

[Candace]:

whole

[Bricktown Toine]:

time meeting

[Candace]:

intent.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Liz's whole family.

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

Yeah, that's true. That's true. Yeah, but he met my whole family. So all of that to say like, it wasn't, I was not nervous. And it was normal. I guess it was just normal. Like I didn't even think twice about it. I think I was probably. more nervous for y'all to be like, this is lame,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

right? Versus like, are y'all, you know, like meeting my family? I don't know,

[Stew]:

We don't

[Candace]:

it was weird.

[Stew]:

require a lot. So I mean, at this age, it's like,

[Candace]:

But I do know that,

[Stew]:

where's the good

[Candace]:

I know

[Stew]:

food

[Candace]:

that

[Stew]:

at?

[Candace]:

too, so

[Bricktown Toine]:

Uh,

[Candace]:

yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

you know what? So let's, let's go, I'm gonna dig a little deeper. And let's, let's level set or give some, some framing for at least my first time meeting Candice.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And then still also let me set the record straight. You did get to meet her family, not her parents, but I forgot her

[Stew]:

Oh

[Bricktown Toine]:

brother

[Stew]:

yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Candace]:

Oh, you met

[Bricktown Toine]:

so

[Candace]:

my

[Bricktown Toine]:

Nolan,

[Candace]:

brother and my sister-in-law.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Nolan and

[Candace]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah,

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah. So,

[Candace]:

Now,

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Candace]:

Lina

[Bricktown Toine]:

his

[Candace]:

and

[Bricktown Toine]:

inner

[Candace]:

Robin.

[Bricktown Toine]:

sister. Yep.

[Candace]:

Yep, you met them.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So, and I got to meet Hudson and what's the other one? It's another H,

[Candace]:

Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

honor.

[Candace]:

honor. Hudson,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'll fire

[Stew]:

Great

[Bricktown Toine]:

you with

[Stew]:

name,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the names.

[Stew]:

great name.

[Candace]:

honor. And Timothy, you met, yeah, you met their kids. And

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

then.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I met several generations of her family the first

[Stew]:

That's great.

[Bricktown Toine]:

time at least three generations of her family

[Stew]:

I want more time next time. That's what I want.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, so

[Candace]:

I mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

uh

[Candace]:

literally, you guys did not have enough time, but okay, yes,

[Bricktown Toine]:

We

[Candace]:

go

[Bricktown Toine]:

did.

[Candace]:

ahead.

[Stew]:

Yes,

[Bricktown Toine]:

All right,

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

so

[Stew]:

agree.

[Bricktown Toine]:

where I was going with this is framing, right? So the first time I met Candice was in Atlanta. I don't recall how long you and Paprika had been dating together, whatever it looks like, but I remember we were in Atlanta and I remember saying, I like this girl. And for a few reasons. So one, because I, you know, I always got a bag with me. So I had a tote bag, this orange tote bag, and Candice was just like holding it down the whole night. Like, no, I got it, I'm looking out for it. Like she was just vigilant over it. It's like, oh, she's so caring and kind. And then also I liked it because Candice said, I don't recall if you were inebriated or not. And I feel like you would have said it even if you weren't inebriated because Candice versus everybody. But like, nah, just kidding. But

[Stew]:

Right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like Candice said, I'm so glad to, I like hanging out with y'all. I like when people don't have broke friends. And I was like, what? She's

[Stew]:

Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

like, she's

[Stew]:

haha!

[Bricktown Toine]:

like. But it

[Candace]:

That's not

[Bricktown Toine]:

was.

[Candace]:

a normal candy that does candy after a couple drinks. Wow, I said that? That's ridiculous.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah. But it was

[Stew]:

And

[Bricktown Toine]:

more

[Stew]:

Hendrix

[Bricktown Toine]:

so.

[Stew]:

got you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But what it was, it was more so to the standpoint of like you, and you appreciated the fact that Mike's friends could have the same level of friend, of fun that you

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

could without you having to feel like, okay, well, you know, you've made it to a certain space of success in life. So you can't always do everybody can't have the same level of fun. And you were on that accord. And I was like, all right. All right. I'm, I'm bought in. Like, let's

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

see where else this

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

goes

[Stew]:

sold.

[Bricktown Toine]:

tonight.

[Stew]:

Hehehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

It was like, I just appreciate her to feel like we weren't broke boys. That's

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

really

[Stew]:

mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

what it was.

[Stew]:

that usually helps a relationship grow, usually.

[Candace]:

Wow.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

But also it's like, everybody's standard of fun is different. Like we'll go and bust down $300 meals and just be happy to be in company and eat good food and just be like, this is enough for me. Like, I love this.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Okay, yes.

[Stew]:

So that means a lot too, cause we're big on that, Zan

[Bricktown Toine]:

So

[Stew]:

specifically.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that's important. Now I was gonna say, cause that's part of the tour, right? When you show somebody

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

your city, you're showing them like your favorite place to eat. So Candice, you took us on a tour. Originally you took us on the PeopleMover, which when I was posting, like even my wife, Liz is like, wait, Detroit has public transit? I was like, I don't know if it's public transit or not.

[Stew]:

That's crazy.

[Bricktown Toine]:

It's called the PeopleMover. It's like a mile, there's a two mile loop around

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the city or something

[Candace]:

it's

[Bricktown Toine]:

like

[Candace]:

not like

[Bricktown Toine]:

that.

[Candace]:

you're

[Stew]:

Eheh.

[Candace]:

typical like public train. I mean we are buses But

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

it's not like you're we don't have like a metro or subway

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

station or nothing like that,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Then

[Candace]:

right?

[Bricktown Toine]:

it was even weird. Like, I'm gonna give you my perspective getting on it. I thought the stations were absolutely beautiful. Like the art and it was just really well designed. I was impressed by the fact that even the stops had Arabic on it and,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

you know, D&I, man, I love the inclusivity of the city, understanding that it has such a big Muslim population. And then

[Stew]:

That was something I

[Bricktown Toine]:

all

[Stew]:

didn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

of the, yeah,

[Stew]:

know.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's a huge, like,

[Candace]:

Oh yeah.

[Stew]:

Yeah, I had no

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah.

[Stew]:

idea until

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

y'all

[Bricktown Toine]:

we told

[Stew]:

said

[Bricktown Toine]:

them

[Stew]:

it

[Bricktown Toine]:

so

[Stew]:

when

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Stew]:

were

[Bricktown Toine]:

went

[Stew]:

out

[Bricktown Toine]:

on

[Stew]:

there.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that journey about NOI and Farid Mohammed and all of that. But anyway, so the city, each of this stops and I don't know their actual cities or like sub areas of Detroit, but each of the stops like Bricktown, Greectown,

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

we only made

[Candace]:

it's

[Bricktown Toine]:

it to

[Candace]:

just

[Bricktown Toine]:

those

[Candace]:

like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

two.

[Candace]:

it's just like neighborhoods. It's not, yeah, it's just more like

[Bricktown Toine]:

Got

[Candace]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

you,

[Candace]:

a

[Bricktown Toine]:

neighborhoods,

[Candace]:

neighborhood

[Bricktown Toine]:

that's

[Candace]:

is called.

[Bricktown Toine]:

a really,

[Candace]:

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm,

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah.

[Candace]:

mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But I told y'all in real time, these sound like Pokemon gems, but then you get out of the train station, and it's not at all a cartoon. You're walking through metal detectors, and that

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

was the craziest thing. What is

[Candace]:

Guys,

[Bricktown Toine]:

that about? That.

[Candace]:

that's recent. That's very recent. I don't know.

[Bricktown Toine]:

It

[Candace]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

is still

[Candace]:

the first

[Bricktown Toine]:

not

[Candace]:

time

[Bricktown Toine]:

normal!

[Candace]:

I've seen them. And it was, and that was in Greek town. Yeah, that was

[Bricktown Toine]:

Where

[Candace]:

in Greek

[Bricktown Toine]:

you took

[Candace]:

town.

[Bricktown Toine]:

this to eat? Heheheheh

[Candace]:

Right across from the casino. Yeah, cause y'all, I mean, yes. I like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

And I enjoy the

[Candace]:

very

[Bricktown Toine]:

food.

[Candace]:

specifically,

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

we

[Stew]:

that's

[Candace]:

went

[Stew]:

good.

[Candace]:

to Golden Fleece, which you have, like, if you're going to get a Euro in Detroit, there's only one place to go get it. It's down there. Now. Next to them used to be this

[Bricktown Toine]:

Pronounce

[Candace]:

restaurant.

[Bricktown Toine]:

gyro for the hood. Uh, god.

[Stew]:

Right.

[Candace]:

Oh yeah, I've only ever known a zero.

[Bricktown Toine]:

God. As the

[Candace]:

Next

[Bricktown Toine]:

proper pronunciation.

[Candace]:

to it, though, was this fire, fire Greek restaurant that we used to always go to for lamb chops. I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

Saganaki.

[Candace]:

so sad they close. Yeah, they have that there, but it's lamb chops. But yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I thought

[Candace]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Candace]:

metal

[Bricktown Toine]:

mess around

[Stew]:

Hey,

[Candace]:

detector

[Stew]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Stew]:

are

[Bricktown Toine]:

called.

[Stew]:

your favorite

[Candace]:

is

[Bricktown Toine]:

So, so.

[Candace]:

like,

[Stew]:

plays?

[Candace]:

no, the restaurant.

[Stew]:

Hmm?

[Candace]:

No, it's like it was New Parthenon or something like that.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Ah, you're right. You're right. You're right. My bad. Like I'm freak, albeit for me to be like, Oh, I know your city better than you. I was in Greentown for six hours. Uh, so Stu, what was that like though on the metal detector thing? Cause that's absolutely crazy, man. Like I

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

need

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

people

[Stew]:

mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

actually

[Stew]:

thought.

[Bricktown Toine]:

understand what we're talking about here. So when you're walking through the streets of Greentown specifically, I can't say it's all Detroit,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but when you're walking through the streets, you are just walking through like two stand up pillars several times you're walking through metal detectors, cops standing

[Candace]:

But I only-

[Bricktown Toine]:

on the other

[Candace]:

how

[Bricktown Toine]:

side

[Candace]:

many

[Bricktown Toine]:

of them.

[Candace]:

did y'all walk through? Cause I only

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Candace]:

saw

[Bricktown Toine]:

walked through.

[Candace]:

one.

[Stew]:

At least

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Stew]:

three

[Bricktown Toine]:

walked

[Stew]:

or four.

[Bricktown Toine]:

through the city that night. So first

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

of all, Saturday night in Detroit, right?

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And all the loud, like I get why they call it Motor City now. This like just loud pipes, pistons,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like I never understood it, but everybody's car, the city's rumbling. There's a pulse and a beat to the city. And then it's like motor oil and Frank footers in the air everywhere like Coney's and with like everything smells wild. This is a crazy smelling city. And then you got the fact that all the Canadian wildfire smoke had just

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

had it

[Stew]:

right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

all sealed in. So it was like an air

[Candace]:

Um.

[Bricktown Toine]:

fryer convection oven of just those smells. This is distinct. But and then you're walking through these men and we saw wild stuff that the hookah cups like

[Stew]:

Thank you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Saturday night in Detroit was we saw Detroit. Then

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

we saw

[Candace]:

So

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

people

[Stew]:

did.

[Candace]:

intentionally,

[Bricktown Toine]:

like.

[Candace]:

okay, I knew you guys only had like a night, right?

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

And because I knew like the next day we had the shower, right,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

and didn't know

[Stew]:

And

[Candace]:

like

[Stew]:

then people

[Candace]:

what

[Stew]:

go

[Candace]:

that

[Stew]:

out.

[Candace]:

was. So I knew that it was just like one night, right? And we stayed downtown, right? We stayed at the Renaissance Center. So I was like, okay, where would be like a good air? And I think at that time, like people, we were hungry, right? We wanted to get some drinks. And so like, I was like, oh, we can go on the People Mover, which I don't even know the last time I went on there, right? So a little bit

[Bricktown Toine]:

Loved

[Candace]:

was like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

it.

[Candace]:

oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Just want

[Candace]:

selfishly,

[Bricktown Toine]:

to say

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

it again.

[Stew]:

enjoyed it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Loved

[Candace]:

you

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

it.

[Stew]:

talking to

[Candace]:

can

[Stew]:

New York

[Candace]:

get on

[Stew]:

boys.

[Candace]:

there.

[Stew]:

So.

[Candace]:

So we got

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

on there

[Bricktown Toine]:

Stu-

[Candace]:

and I was

[Bricktown Toine]:

Stu

[Candace]:

like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Hopter turnstile.

[Candace]:

but...

[Bricktown Toine]:

I probably shouldn't say that on air, but Stu Hopter turnstile, y'all.

[Stew]:

It was it was

[Bricktown Toine]:

He's

[Stew]:

for

[Candace]:

New

[Bricktown Toine]:

a rough

[Candace]:

York.

[Stew]:

creativity

[Bricktown Toine]:

neck.

[Stew]:

purposes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Hehehehe

[Stew]:

You're right.

[Candace]:

It was, it was, it was part, partially for content, huh Stu?

[Stew]:

That's right. That's right. Exactly. I didn't want to pay that $75

[Candace]:

Um...

[Stew]:

in any

[Bricktown Toine]:

Y'all

[Stew]:

way.

[Bricktown Toine]:

don't need to tell my secrets. Don't talk about my behind the brand secrets.

[Candace]:

We

[Bricktown Toine]:

Come

[Candace]:

didn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

on.

[Candace]:

even say what content. We didn't say what content. We just said content. You told the secret. No, but so then I was like, okay, like let's just go to Greectown. It's close. Even if we didn't take the people mover, we could have just walked,

[Stew]:

It was right

[Candace]:

right?

[Stew]:

there.

[Candace]:

But then I was like, you know what? Like Greectown gonna give you some everything. Like y'all gonna get

[Bricktown Toine]:

He

[Candace]:

a good,

[Bricktown Toine]:

came for the sum of everything!

[Candace]:

y'all gonna

[Stew]:

Truly.

[Candace]:

get a good sum of everything.

[Stew]:

That's an understatement. Ha

[Candace]:

If you only

[Stew]:

ha.

[Candace]:

are here for a short time, right? You wanna

[Stew]:

That's

[Candace]:

have

[Stew]:

where

[Candace]:

a good

[Stew]:

you need to be.

[Candace]:

time, not for

[Bricktown Toine]:

to the point

[Candace]:

a long

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Candace]:

time.

[Bricktown Toine]:

returned to it hours later. We were like, just the

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Greek town

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

called

[Stew]:

went back.

[Bricktown Toine]:

us. It beckoned

[Stew]:

We

[Bricktown Toine]:

us

[Stew]:

went

[Bricktown Toine]:

back

[Stew]:

back.

[Bricktown Toine]:

to Greek town. All right,

[Stew]:

Felt

[Bricktown Toine]:

so

[Stew]:

like

[Bricktown Toine]:

Stu

[Stew]:

home

[Bricktown Toine]:

real

[Stew]:

base.

[Bricktown Toine]:

quick, cause I said I was gonna be quiet, man. So I wanted to get us to, how did you feel just walking through the metal detectors? What was your experience walking around Greek town? Daytime with Candice and then at night time when we were unleashed, which is me, you and Audrey.

[Stew]:

Okay, nighttime was, I had my head on a swivel just to make sure we was good. But you know, during daytime it was fine. I mean, it felt like, you know, it felt like any other place. You know, I live in Atlanta, everyone has a gun. So that doesn't really like, at this point, it doesn't really phase me as much.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So perhaps you felt safer here because the metal detectors were

[Stew]:

Oh yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Stew]:

no

[Bricktown Toine]:

the point

[Stew]:

doubt.

[Bricktown Toine]:

where...

[Stew]:

Yeah, because you could be walking in the park and I mean, literally everyone here has a gun. So yes,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I live

[Stew]:

I did

[Bricktown Toine]:

in Texas,

[Stew]:

feel safer.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah.

[Stew]:

Um, I did feel safer, but at night, you know, even with the metal detectors, I was, and we did a long walk. Like we,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Well, that

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

doesn't

[Stew]:

really

[Bricktown Toine]:

make

[Stew]:

walked

[Bricktown Toine]:

me

[Stew]:

around

[Bricktown Toine]:

feel

[Stew]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

safe.

[Stew]:

city.

[Bricktown Toine]:

The

[Stew]:

What'd

[Bricktown Toine]:

fact

[Stew]:

you say?

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Candace]:

Well,

[Bricktown Toine]:

you have

[Candace]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

meta

[Candace]:

trying to

[Bricktown Toine]:

detectors

[Candace]:

figure out what

[Bricktown Toine]:

is like,

[Candace]:

the purpose

[Bricktown Toine]:

why, what's happening

[Candace]:

is.

[Bricktown Toine]:

here?

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

That's what I'm saying. What's

[Candace]:

I'm trying

[Bricktown Toine]:

been

[Candace]:

to

[Bricktown Toine]:

going

[Candace]:

figure

[Bricktown Toine]:

on

[Candace]:

out like

[Bricktown Toine]:

while you

[Candace]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

feel

[Candace]:

the

[Stew]:

Oh,

[Candace]:

purpose

[Bricktown Toine]:

you need

[Candace]:

was.

[Bricktown Toine]:

this

[Stew]:

true.

[Bricktown Toine]:

in the

[Stew]:

Oh, I

[Bricktown Toine]:

increase

[Stew]:

don't know.

[Candace]:

I just

[Bricktown Toine]:

of police

[Candace]:

don't,

[Bricktown Toine]:

presence.

[Candace]:

I don't understand. I don't understand where it, when it started, where it came from. Like, I really don't like, honestly, and I was trying to remember like, what was the last time that I was home before this time,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

but like that wasn't there, so.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And a city that's nearly 80% black, right? And when you really think about over policing in our communities,

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I did not feel safe with the increase of police. And it's not because of the people, it was the increase of the police presence actually. And remember that night we saw that like paddy wagon coming by

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like the Detroit Police Department joined us. It's like, all right, what's going on here? Like

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

what's happening

[Candace]:

dang,

[Bricktown Toine]:

in the

[Candace]:

I wasn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

city?

[Candace]:

with you guys at night, so

[Stew]:

Yeah, it was a lot.

[Candace]:

that's...

[Stew]:

There's a lot of police officers

[Bricktown Toine]:

It's

[Stew]:

out

[Bricktown Toine]:

overwhelming.

[Stew]:

there. I felt like, I wanna say like every other block we saw a cop, either a car

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Stew]:

or someone on the street just kind of standing around, like, yeah. I mean, I'm always very weary of that. That and American flags. When I see like three American flags on someone's house, I'm like, okay, hold on. This is

[Bricktown Toine]:

This

[Stew]:

a little,

[Bricktown Toine]:

is a certain level of patriotism.

[Stew]:

a

[Bricktown Toine]:

Shout

[Stew]:

little

[Bricktown Toine]:

out to

[Stew]:

too

[Candace]:

This

[Bricktown Toine]:

Independence

[Stew]:

American.

[Candace]:

isn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

Day

[Candace]:

the neighborhood

[Bricktown Toine]:

weekend though.

[Candace]:

for me.

[Stew]:

Yeah. No,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Shout

[Stew]:

absolutely

[Bricktown Toine]:

out to Independence

[Stew]:

not.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Day. Yeah.

[Stew]:

Nah, even still, I'm cool.

[Candace]:

Shout out to Independence Day. This is the neighborhood for me.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Um,

[Stew]:

Right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but you know, alternatively, when I hung my, the David Hammond's African American flag outside

[Stew]:

I feel

[Bricktown Toine]:

my

[Stew]:

safer

[Bricktown Toine]:

house, I

[Stew]:

with

[Bricktown Toine]:

feel

[Stew]:

that.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like we got a lot more black people in the neighborhood afterwards, right? There

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

were way more black people over here than I ever remember. And I feel like I gave them that safe space. So, you know, different signals, but

[Stew]:

Hehehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

all right, Stu. So you walking around police presence, Greek food in your belly, hookah cups, left

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Stew]:

And

[Bricktown Toine]:

right,

[Stew]:

on my pants, because I

[Bricktown Toine]:

um,

[Stew]:

spilled some.

[Bricktown Toine]:

one of the things head on a swivel,

[Candace]:

Hand over

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Candace]:

pants!

[Bricktown Toine]:

saw.

[Stew]:

Hehehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

One of the things that I felt like beyond the motor oil and smelly conies in the sky, one of the things, so we walked by a couple of clubs and bars and we got to see Detroit fashion.

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So what's your take on Detroit fashion?

[Stew]:

Me? Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

so

[Bricktown Toine]:

you!

[Stew]:

you're going to get, so you're going to get, you're going to get some, you're going to get a little bit of everything. Okay. Let me just,

[Bricktown Toine]:

everything.

[Stew]:

let me say that. And you can see the generational change in outfits. Like

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Stew]:

you're going to see a lot of linen. I saw a lot of linen,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Tons of old players. Tons

[Stew]:

tons

[Bricktown Toine]:

of old players

[Stew]:

of

[Bricktown Toine]:

in

[Stew]:

old

[Bricktown Toine]:

Detroit.

[Stew]:

players with very

[Candace]:

Well...

[Stew]:

eclectic colors, bright red, bright like royal blue, like, or cream,

[Bricktown Toine]:

intense lavenders.

[Stew]:

intense

[Candace]:

intense

[Stew]:

lavenders.

[Candace]:

lavatories.

[Bricktown Toine]:

several

[Stew]:

You know

[Bricktown Toine]:

pieces,

[Stew]:

what I'm saying?

[Bricktown Toine]:

no

[Stew]:

Cartier

[Bricktown Toine]:

suit had

[Stew]:

lenses.

[Bricktown Toine]:

less than four pieces to it. Matching gators. And then

[Stew]:

Always.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that one dude

[Candace]:

Matching

[Bricktown Toine]:

that was out,

[Candace]:

gators for sure.

[Bricktown Toine]:

what's the place you took us to?

[Candace]:

I was just about to say, you guys, you

[Bricktown Toine]:

Burt's?

[Candace]:

saw all the old plays at Berks on Broadway.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Burt's, it was Burt's, it was

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

Burt's.

[Stew]:

out of here.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And then the dude was so fresh and then he just came outside and just started selling sunglasses. And I'm

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like, wait, I thought he was, like just, I didn't

[Stew]:

You

[Bricktown Toine]:

know.

[Stew]:

too

[Bricktown Toine]:

There

[Stew]:

can

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Stew]:

have

[Bricktown Toine]:

a guy,

[Stew]:

this fresh.

[Bricktown Toine]:

there was a guy on like the big booty, what's it, the hall. I don't know what kind, I don't know much about motorcycles, but the big

[Stew]:

Harley

[Bricktown Toine]:

back

[Stew]:

or

[Bricktown Toine]:

motorcycle.

[Stew]:

something? Yeah. Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

with the huge speakers in it playing R. Kelly ignition. And then I was like, man, I haven't heard R. Kelly in so long. I

[Candace]:

Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

miss

[Candace]:

you

[Bricktown Toine]:

this

[Candace]:

did

[Bricktown Toine]:

disgusting

[Candace]:

say that I remember

[Bricktown Toine]:

MF.

[Candace]:

that?

[Bricktown Toine]:

Like his music was so good. And

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I was like, but I felt awful listening to

[Stew]:

Yup.

[Bricktown Toine]:

him. Like this is Detroit. I can't police with Detroit listens to. The do rags nonstop, love that.

[Stew]:

Everywhere, of course.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Every flavor of do rag in the city. Again,

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

nearly an 80% black city. Felt very safe with the do rags out there. Couple pairs of jibows.

[Stew]:

Nah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Everybody

[Stew]:

you can't

[Bricktown Toine]:

had

[Stew]:

just

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Stew]:

slide

[Bricktown Toine]:

buffs

[Stew]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

on.

[Stew]:

in there, fam. Like a couple of years ago, it's way, way three. It's OD.

[Bricktown Toine]:

It depends on how you rock it. Like, I

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

mean, if

[Stew]:

fair.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's vintage,

[Candace]:

I was gonna

[Bricktown Toine]:

but

[Candace]:

say,

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah,

[Candace]:

I mean, yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but, but it didn't really feel like intentionally vintage ironic. Jemone

[Stew]:

Right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

was like, nah, I'm just like, just watch the straps I stepped out with tonight.

[Stew]:

I'm ready.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Nope. But any establishment you went into, it was like, you got all of these things in the same spot. Like

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

nobody was dressed like they were all going to the same

[Stew]:

You

[Bricktown Toine]:

event

[Stew]:

don't know,

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Stew]:

you

[Bricktown Toine]:

day.

[Stew]:

had no idea where anyone was going. I

[Bricktown Toine]:

No, nothing.

[Stew]:

think.

[Candace]:

Everybody has their own sense of style.

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Candace]:

I just,

[Bricktown Toine]:

This

[Candace]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

is

[Candace]:

would

[Bricktown Toine]:

true.

[Candace]:

like, and everyone has their own sense of style and you don't feel like you have to dress a certain way to go somewhere.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm. Yeah,

[Candace]:

I mean, unless

[Bricktown Toine]:

cuz you-

[Candace]:

you're going to like, I mean, unless it's like a fancy,

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

you

[Stew]:

but

[Candace]:

know,

[Stew]:

as black

[Candace]:

whatever,

[Stew]:

people,

[Candace]:

but like.

[Stew]:

you know, that often is interpreted as a barrier to entry, right? Because either they want to keep you out or whatever. You want a certain level of clientele,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Tons of black

[Stew]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

codes

[Stew]:

have you?

[Bricktown Toine]:

out there where you can't

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

get in with the hat or like I had a guy in Dallas looking me once I don't know if I told I know I didn't tell you this Candice But I told you just do like the dude looked at me up and down at the door and found something to tell me I could not

[Stew]:

Thank

[Bricktown Toine]:

get into the bar

[Stew]:

you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

with he was like, uh Pants got pockets on the sides. We can't let people

[Stew]:

Hahaha

[Bricktown Toine]:

Wait, what these like tailored Banana Republic chinos or something like that. Like what did you just find out man? I hate Dallas All right, so All right, we talked about the people in the spots. We talked about hitting, so food, Greek food. Do we eat anything else out there?

[Stew]:

I didn't get

[Candace]:

Hmm

[Stew]:

a chance to try Konies, which

[Candace]:

Guys,

[Stew]:

is, I'm not happy

[Candace]:

I was

[Stew]:

about.

[Candace]:

thinking I was like we didn't do Coney's

[Bricktown Toine]:

window.

[Candace]:

which that maybe that

[Stew]:

You

[Candace]:

was

[Stew]:

didn't

[Candace]:

like

[Stew]:

like

[Candace]:

a fail

[Stew]:

it?

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'm fine

[Candace]:

on my

[Bricktown Toine]:

with

[Candace]:

part

[Bricktown Toine]:

that. I'm okay with

[Candace]:

Well,

[Bricktown Toine]:

that.

[Candace]:

he's not gonna

[Stew]:

Oh, fair.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I enjoy

[Candace]:

He's

[Bricktown Toine]:

Farmer

[Candace]:

not gonna

[Bricktown Toine]:

Frank's.

[Candace]:

eat that

[Bricktown Toine]:

I enjoy Eastern Market in general. Eastern Market was a cool area.

[Candace]:

We have to

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

do

[Stew]:

that was-

[Candace]:

a whole like pause on Easter market. That's one of my favorite places. We didn't do Coney's.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

We didn't do corned beef sandwiches.

[Stew]:

I've had one in so long.

[Candace]:

They're so

[Stew]:

Maybe

[Candace]:

great.

[Stew]:

not since childhood.

[Candace]:

Dang,

[Stew]:

My mom

[Candace]:

y'all

[Stew]:

loved

[Candace]:

could have

[Stew]:

corned

[Candace]:

got some

[Stew]:

beef

[Candace]:

from

[Bricktown Toine]:

This

[Stew]:

sandwiches.

[Candace]:

Greectown

[Bricktown Toine]:

is childhood.

[Candace]:

too. Do you have any

[Bricktown Toine]:

What?

[Candace]:

corned

[Bricktown Toine]:

Well, we

[Candace]:

beef

[Bricktown Toine]:

went to

[Candace]:

sandwich

[Bricktown Toine]:

the other

[Candace]:

since

[Bricktown Toine]:

restaurant

[Candace]:

childhood?

[Bricktown Toine]:

in Greentown and that's the place that like deep

[Candace]:

I don't.

[Bricktown Toine]:

fried a hare in Calamari. Remember

[Stew]:

Oh yeah, that wasn't great.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that?

[Stew]:

Oh, that

[Candace]:

Guys,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Like

[Stew]:

was a

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Stew]:

long

[Bricktown Toine]:

was that

[Stew]:

ass

[Bricktown Toine]:

kind

[Stew]:

piece of hair.

[Bricktown Toine]:

of... Yeah.

[Candace]:

once you ventured out past like the parameters that

[Bricktown Toine]:

We

[Candace]:

I gave

[Bricktown Toine]:

went off

[Candace]:

you,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the Candice

[Candace]:

you

[Bricktown Toine]:

path.

[Stew]:

Off

[Candace]:

were

[Stew]:

the

[Candace]:

on

[Stew]:

reservation,

[Candace]:

your own at

[Bricktown Toine]:

We

[Candace]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

were

[Stew]:

that's

[Candace]:

point.

[Bricktown Toine]:

literally

[Stew]:

fair.

[Candace]:

Like

[Bricktown Toine]:

next

[Candace]:

I don't,

[Bricktown Toine]:

door to the place you took us earlier in the day!

[Stew]:

I'm sorry.

[Candace]:

and you literally said the name of it. And I was like,

[Stew]:

What?

[Candace]:

no,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Never heard of it.

[Candace]:

I know Golden Fleece. I know Astoria the bakery

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

and then you got

[Stew]:

We

[Candace]:

a

[Stew]:

went

[Candace]:

casino.

[Stew]:

in that story for a second.

[Candace]:

What's beyond there? I don't,

[Bricktown Toine]:

We had

[Candace]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

pizza

[Candace]:

mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Candace]:

I don't

[Bricktown Toine]:

night,

[Candace]:

know.

[Stew]:

We had pizza that

[Bricktown Toine]:

but

[Stew]:

night.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it wasn't Detroit

[Candace]:

Where'd

[Bricktown Toine]:

style

[Candace]:

you get pizza

[Bricktown Toine]:

pizza.

[Candace]:

from? Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like you didn't have corned beef. You didn't have buddies. Like you didn't

[Stew]:

What kind of food

[Candace]:

have

[Stew]:

is Buddy's?

[Candace]:

pizza. It's the

[Stew]:

Oh,

[Candace]:

Detroit style pizza.

[Stew]:

mm-hmm. I didn't have Jet.

[Candace]:

That's another place, Jets.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Candace]:

Y'all

[Bricktown Toine]:

still,

[Candace]:

didn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

you have been to Detroit before?

[Candace]:

go to Fishbones,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

even

[Stew]:

Mm-mm.

[Candace]:

though it was right

[Stew]:

We wanted

[Candace]:

there.

[Bricktown Toine]:

which I'm

[Stew]:

to,

[Bricktown Toine]:

sad about, yeah,

[Stew]:

and then by the time

[Bricktown Toine]:

but

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

it was

[Stew]:

figured

[Bricktown Toine]:

Father's

[Stew]:

it out,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Day. We didn't

[Stew]:

it was

[Bricktown Toine]:

get

[Stew]:

packed,

[Bricktown Toine]:

to.

[Stew]:

yeah.

[Candace]:

for sure.

[Stew]:

Because we walked

[Bricktown Toine]:

All right,

[Stew]:

past

[Bricktown Toine]:

so other

[Stew]:

it,

[Bricktown Toine]:

things

[Stew]:

and Zayn

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Stew]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

did

[Stew]:

like, we should

[Bricktown Toine]:

see

[Stew]:

go.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Candace. So you showed us Eastern Market.

[Candace]:

Love,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I got

[Candace]:

Eastern

[Bricktown Toine]:

Eastern

[Candace]:

Market.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Market at least. We got

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

the Dequindre cut.

[Candace]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Say a little more about why you

[Candace]:

So,

[Bricktown Toine]:

took us to the

[Candace]:

okay,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Dequindre

[Candace]:

so.

[Bricktown Toine]:

cut and explain to the people, the audience out there what the Dequindre cut is

[Candace]:

Right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

and why

[Candace]:

I was

[Bricktown Toine]:

you.

[Candace]:

about to do that. Okay. So Eastern Market is a big, on the weekends, every Saturday, farmers market.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

Sunday, and I think like Tuesdays, they have like a creative market, but there's like a series of sheds. I think it's like five or six sheds. Then there's events and stuff that they have there, but like just the amount of like vendors and everything that come, you can literally get whatever you want at Eastern Market during the market days. So then you have the Quindercut, which is a walking path. I don't wanna say underneath, but it's a walking path along the city and it gets you from Eastern Market area down to the Riverwalk.

[Bricktown Toine]:

We didn't

[Candace]:

And...

[Bricktown Toine]:

even make it to the river while-

[Stew]:

I think we did though on the backside

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh, we did,

[Stew]:

of the. Mm

[Candace]:

You were

[Bricktown Toine]:

but

[Candace]:

saying

[Bricktown Toine]:

because

[Candace]:

at the

[Bricktown Toine]:

it was

[Candace]:

river.

[Bricktown Toine]:

right behind the hotel,

[Stew]:

hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

we were staying

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

at the Riverwalk. Gotcha.

[Candace]:

So, but it takes you out like a little further down.

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

Um, uh, that's where the drop off is. Um, but then on the cut, there's a lot of different events that they have. Um, actually y'all left on Monday, but Monday they had like a whole like June team deal,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Hmm.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

um, and there was a couple of different

[Bricktown Toine]:

That's

[Candace]:

like

[Bricktown Toine]:

an important

[Candace]:

musicians

[Bricktown Toine]:

thing

[Candace]:

and

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Candace]:

stuff

[Bricktown Toine]:

frame

[Candace]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

this

[Candace]:

played,

[Bricktown Toine]:

as. Sorry, my bad,

[Candace]:

um.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but this is Juneteenth weekend in a really black city as well. I completely forgot.

[Candace]:

Yeah, and then they have a bar on the cut called the Freight Yard. Honestly...

[Bricktown Toine]:

Is that where we were? Where was that? So we were at the Freight Yard? Okay.

[Candace]:

Mm-hmm. Which honestly is just like a bar and they have a DJ and they know how food trucks go. It's very

[Bricktown Toine]:

All

[Candace]:

simple.

[Bricktown Toine]:

right, so what I'm gonna explain for y'all, because I think some of this is also normalized to Candace because she grew up in this area and she visits regularly. So this cut that we're talking about, like if you're actually familiar with the colloquialism in the cut, like it's in the cut, but when you look at what this cut is, so there are, and Candace, correct me if I'm misrepresenting any of this, right? But like, I don't know what else to call them, like bandos, abandoned buildings, but these aren't just like houses.

[Stew]:

Okay, then

[Bricktown Toine]:

This

[Stew]:

no.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is full up mills and warehouses or former commercial, real estate spaces and they're huge, but it's beautiful because it's been repurposed. So, right, there's a lot of buildings that aren't occupied and things that we've seen around the city. And you know, at one time it was such an industrial city with so many people there that now you have all of this space and it's how do we make it mixed use, how do we repurpose it? But it's also kind of like slightly horrifying. If like we weren't there at nighttime, but I saw this woman running through there and that was one of the most, the things that resonated most with me. Cause I'm like, this looks like in every like, Candyman and all those films where people just

[Stew]:

law

[Bricktown Toine]:

going

[Stew]:

and

[Bricktown Toine]:

through

[Stew]:

order.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like those areas like what that's not a place that I would expect somebody To just be running but

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

because the city is now repaired or whoever is repurposed it and made it beautiful in this mix you space I just really love that happened in a place where I Mean run down might be a little bit of hyperbole, but the buildings right like they're not they're not

[Candace]:

Well, I mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

used

[Candace]:

yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

for

[Candace]:

they're older, right? And I think

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

here's the thing too, it closes at like 10.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

But if you look at it, right, they have the lane that's for walking and walking, running, then they have the bike lane or whatever. I mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Candace]:

you'll

[Bricktown Toine]:

we'll put up

[Candace]:

see...

[Bricktown Toine]:

some photos of the area because I had a full photo shoot.

[Candace]:

people roller skating, you'll see bike riding, scooters, right, walking, whatever. Like the purpose is to be, get outside, right? And I think that's why, like it's easy to, it's an easy way to like get outside and walk. Like even from where my parents, that means where my parents live, right, we walk to the market all the time and then we'll go on the cut and walk. And I think just for me personally, I like even where we live here in Silver Spring, it's a walkable area. Like that is something to me that I like, I just enjoy personally is getting outside and walking.

[Stew]:

care.

[Candace]:

So having

[Stew]:

Me too.

[Candace]:

those spaces where we can do that is why like literally we're sitting at the cut and I just looked at Mike and I was like, you know, this is like my happy place. Like at the freight

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

yard at the cut.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh, right there.

[Candace]:

Cause it's just like with the music playing, like when we went for my birthday, we just went out there, we chill. I mean, I don't know, it's hard to explain because it's very simple. But yeah, I mean, the cut's fairly new too. Like it wasn't necessarily, it wasn't around when I was a kid growing up. It just,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Okay,

[Candace]:

it

[Bricktown Toine]:

so

[Candace]:

opened

[Bricktown Toine]:

what are those

[Candace]:

up recently.

[Bricktown Toine]:

buildings? Like what used to be in that area? Was it factories

[Candace]:

We should have did

[Bricktown Toine]:

or

[Candace]:

this.

[Bricktown Toine]:

housing?

[Candace]:

I think it was factories. It wasn't housing,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

but

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

also

[Bricktown Toine]:

they look

[Candace]:

like.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like old mills, but they're so huge. I think that's the thing that I'm trying to like. So Detroit being Midwest, right? It's not as if it's an East Coast city where there's tall buildings everywhere and everything's built on top of each other. There's a lot more sprawl in Detroit. So the format of these buildings were really large, square footage wide types of buildings. When we talk about mills and factories and things and production spaces, and Candice, you said it was your happy place. One thing that came to mind for me is this phrase of joy amidst the decay. And specifically what I mean is you've got, like the parallel I drew was like going to Rome and you got the ruins, the

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

ancient Rome, the antiquity there amongst the new stuff. And people just like, no, I can sit between that. And it's not

[Candace]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like, I'm not gonna oversell it. It's not as beautiful as seeing ancient ruins, right? And columns

[Candace]:

I was about

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Candace]:

to

[Bricktown Toine]:

things,

[Candace]:

say.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but it's that, it's a space where word of the day is do anachronistic. So

[Stew]:

Okay.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's

[Stew]:

And

[Bricktown Toine]:

like

[Stew]:

that's

[Bricktown Toine]:

time.

[Stew]:

where it ends. Boom.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Detroit is anachronistic. Yeah, it's like time has, there's a spot where time froze and those buildings are really old, but the way that we're using it is very current and present and even futuristic in some ways. And you have these two different times rubbing up against each other when you're going through the city. Like even some of the buildings out by where y'all stayed look like the old, like they were probably cutting edge in the eighties, but now they haven't invested more in that building.

[Candace]:

Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

So it's

[Candace]:

out

[Bricktown Toine]:

like,

[Candace]:

in Southfield. Yeah, a lot of the

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah.

[Candace]:

office buildings. Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, it kind of like got frozen in time.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

But the biggest part that you didn't even mention is all the artwork

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh,

[Candace]:

that,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Candace]:

that's

[Bricktown Toine]:

street

[Candace]:

a huge

[Bricktown Toine]:

art. Yes,

[Candace]:

part.

[Bricktown Toine]:

tons

[Candace]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

of

[Candace]:

a

[Bricktown Toine]:

tons

[Candace]:

huge

[Bricktown Toine]:

of beautiful

[Candace]:

part

[Bricktown Toine]:

street

[Candace]:

of

[Bricktown Toine]:

art

[Candace]:

that,

[Bricktown Toine]:

there.

[Candace]:

of the cut is like, and you guys only saw like a fraction of it. So really like next time we'll

[Stew]:

first thing

[Candace]:

walk

[Stew]:

I

[Candace]:

the,

[Stew]:

noticed.

[Candace]:

I think it's only like

[Bricktown Toine]:

We'll

[Candace]:

two

[Bricktown Toine]:

see.

[Candace]:

miles long. We can walk the whole cut and you'll see like the different, I mean, Zan you're gonna have content overload cause there's

[Stew]:

Hehehe

[Candace]:

so much like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

you'll

[Bricktown Toine]:

And I mean, it's beautiful

[Candace]:

go to areas.

[Bricktown Toine]:

because I am, I am particular, I have a particular affinity for red brick and

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's a ton of red brick and red brick as a canvas for street art just pops in a different way. And it was just beautiful, man. And then we had fun at the trucks and stuff was still like how the cut feel to you when you walked over there. Cause y'all came later than us too. So you didn't

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

have like the walkthrough and

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

some

[Stew]:

mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

were

[Stew]:

I would

[Bricktown Toine]:

setting.

[Stew]:

have loved to have walked it because I think, I mean, for all the things that you said, Candice, and also for you, Zan, I do love when you see certain places like that and like, you know, the windows are out or, you know, you see the skeleton of the building. There's always like a story there. There's always like, there's something to learn about it. And you all probably know this about me. I love history. I'm a very annoying history person. So I'll go and research what all that stuff was and how they used it. But I wish we got to walk it more. I love the communal kind of like space that we were in. You had the bar here, you had the food truck here. It reminded me of a portion of Brooklyn. That's like the smorgasbord kind of area where there's a bunch of

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Stew]:

vendors that come on Saturdays and different food and all this other stuff.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Shout out to Williamsburg.

[Stew]:

But it also reminded me of the Beltline here in Atlanta, where, you know, they've repurposed

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Stew]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

That's

[Stew]:

space

[Bricktown Toine]:

a good

[Stew]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

one.

[Stew]:

was, that would you know, that is exactly what you said, Candice. Like it's built for you to be outside. Come ride your bike, come roller skate, do what you gotta do, come have a picnic. There's a grass area over there too. So yeah, I mean, it was a very familiar feeling and it was an environment that I felt comfortable being in. I wish we had more time. I kept saying

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

that the whole week and I wish we had more time.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And the difference between that. So Beltline Parallel was really strong. The

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

only difference is that they put people back in those spaces. And so all they retrofitted and converted all of those buildings on the, so people

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

were either retail space or, uh, living space in those joints, but that's a really good one. All right. And so we left there. I mean, I don't even remember what else we did after that. Like, oh, that was after the baby shower.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

The

[Candace]:

That

[Bricktown Toine]:

whole

[Candace]:

was after

[Bricktown Toine]:

thing is

[Candace]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

a

[Candace]:

baby

[Bricktown Toine]:

blur.

[Candace]:

shower.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah. Cause I

[Candace]:

That

[Bricktown Toine]:

went

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

from

[Candace]:

was,

[Bricktown Toine]:

New

[Candace]:

yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

York

[Candace]:

that was after

[Bricktown Toine]:

to Detroit.

[Candace]:

the shower.

[Bricktown Toine]:

the flit. All right, so let's

[Candace]:

Oh, you guys had, you had Bucharest, you had Schwarmus.

[Bricktown Toine]:

We did.

[Candace]:

You and Liz.

[Stew]:

Oh

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Stew]:

yeah, that's right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

because the food truck line was so long, well, we planned this before we got there. So you were really smart. And I'll let you know one of your Detroit sister and they twice sister in

[Stew]:

Hehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

actually said, she was like, oh, they got their Bucharest when she saw walking in when she said, they knew what's up. They

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

knew

[Stew]:

going

[Bricktown Toine]:

what

[Stew]:

to

[Bricktown Toine]:

time

[Stew]:

go.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it was. Cause the lock was so, the food truck was my favorite thing of the whole trip. I did like hands down. Everybody this is where I knew this is where I actually got introduced to the people beyond your family Like this is where I was like, oh, this is what Detroit people are like. I'm sold. I'm bought

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

in There was an amazing lesbian couple behind me to hype me up about my muscles. I was like I will cherish that memory forever There was the guy who so we're at a food truck that is this is just this feels very Detroit to me Candice You can tell me if I'm wrong or not, but like the hustle the spirit of just weird random things and nobody even bothered me with what makes sense. There was a dude making egg rolls. It was egg roll truck.

[Stew]:

Higro

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Stew]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

he

[Stew]:

fired

[Bricktown Toine]:

was putting

[Stew]:

too.

[Bricktown Toine]:

anything in egg rolls. Like, and what drew me to

[Candace]:

He

[Bricktown Toine]:

it

[Candace]:

did

[Bricktown Toine]:

was,

[Candace]:

have

[Bricktown Toine]:

oh,

[Candace]:

very

[Bricktown Toine]:

you

[Candace]:

eclectic ingredients

[Stew]:

Pfft.

[Candace]:

for

[Stew]:

Hehehe.

[Bricktown Toine]:

got,

[Candace]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

oh,

[Candace]:

ed

[Bricktown Toine]:

absolutely.

[Candace]:

growth.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, I mean, what drew me to it was sweet potato pie egg roll. I never had a sweet potato pie egg roll. I'm sold.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And Mike was like, no, I can eat a little bit. Mike was sold. So, and then he didn't even have one. So I stood in the line

[Stew]:

I'm sorry.

[Bricktown Toine]:

for like 30 minutes. His POS process, everything was terrible, but shout out to this dude. I don't remember your name or your truck, but

[Candace]:

But yeah, I don't remember the name of it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I wanna give him his props for being inventive.

[Stew]:

in the

[Bricktown Toine]:

He

[Stew]:

right

[Bricktown Toine]:

was innovative,

[Stew]:

place. Ha ha ha.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but I just, yeah. So, and he was in the right place.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So we in the line, one-do orders from the menu, a meatloaf and mashed potato egg roll. So this is where I got introduced

[Stew]:

Awesome,

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Stew]:

man.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Detroit because everybody in the line, we don't know this guy. but everybody just gangs up on it dude. So now it's legit like Detroit versus egg roll, meatloaf dude, like, yo, why would you even order that? And like people tapping each other like, yeah, I'm wondering the same, I was wondering that too. We all like, well, can we see it when it comes out? Cause and he was like, I don't, cause it was meatloaf, mashed potatoes, just things that didn't go, I wouldn't order those things separately, but to

[Candace]:

Mm-mm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

have them in an egg roll was

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

like

[Stew]:

that's...

[Bricktown Toine]:

pretty aggressive. And dude

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

turned to us and was like, well, have y'all ever had one? We were like, no, it

[Stew]:

Fair.

[Bricktown Toine]:

was logical. He was like, well, I just figured something I never had before. So we're all going back and forth and we were like, well, we want to see it when it comes out. It takes 30 minutes for this thing to even be made. So it's like, that's one of the things where, you know, it's one of the things that somebody put on the menu, but it's like, oh, somebody ordered this, oops.

[Stew]:

Right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And I got to throw it together. So then

[Stew]:

I don't even know if

[Bricktown Toine]:

everybody's

[Stew]:

I have this.

[Bricktown Toine]:

in line

[Candace]:

It

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Candace]:

wasn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

it was like,

[Candace]:

even ready. He was like,

[Stew]:

Right.

[Candace]:

damn, I got to

[Bricktown Toine]:

it

[Candace]:

put

[Bricktown Toine]:

wasn't.

[Candace]:

this together.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And to the point where I sat down. and people came back and they were telling me like, it actually was good. They

[Stew]:

Oh wow.

[Bricktown Toine]:

came back to follow up like, it looked good and it was actually pretty good, but it was, we bonded in the line over this. I was like, nah, y'all are cool people out here.

[Stew]:

has

[Candace]:

I tell

[Stew]:

doubled.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Go

[Candace]:

people

[Bricktown Toine]:

ahead.

[Candace]:

all the time that Detroit is, it will give you small town vibes in a big city.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

Like people are, I mean, to that point, right? Like people are not, like the first time Mike came, we went to Eastern Market Obby

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

and he won a cup of coffee. And so there was a vendor there selling coffee. And I told the vendor, I was like, oh yeah, this is his first time at the market. He was like, oh, is this your first time in Detroit? And he was like, yeah, he was like, oh, the coffee's on us. Like, he was like,

[Stew]:

Let's go.

[Candace]:

we were like, really? He was like, yeah, no. Like, people genuinely, I think part of it too is like, especially if

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Candace]:

you're

[Bricktown Toine]:

got

[Candace]:

with

[Bricktown Toine]:

a first

[Candace]:

a local.

[Bricktown Toine]:

time at discount there somewhere too.

[Candace]:

I think if you're with a local, like you've at that point already been vetted, right? So like, obviously like you're cool. But no, like I really do think that you get small town vibes in a big city. Like people

[Bricktown Toine]:

in the next

[Candace]:

are

[Bricktown Toine]:

video.

[Candace]:

for the most part, people are

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

genuinely like nice. I'm not going to say like, I'm

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

not

[Stew]:

yeah,

[Candace]:

going

[Stew]:

you

[Candace]:

to

[Stew]:

got

[Candace]:

sell

[Stew]:

to throw

[Candace]:

this

[Stew]:

the caveat

[Candace]:

dream,

[Stew]:

in there.

[Candace]:

right?

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

Like,

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

I mean,

[Stew]:

no

[Candace]:

there's

[Stew]:

doubt

[Candace]:

always a caveat, but I think people that I've like, even, um, a couple of my friends that came that same birthday trip, like they went and ventured off on their own and did other things, but

[Bricktown Toine]:

You

[Candace]:

I mean, still have the same conversation, like. very great interactions with people. So

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

I think

[Bricktown Toine]:

even on the river

[Candace]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

walk,

[Candace]:

all plays

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Candace]:

into

[Bricktown Toine]:

was-

[Candace]:

that whole like misconception of like what this city, you know, like is. But I think, I mean, you definitely get small town vibes in a big city. So that's why the people rocked with you in a line. Y'all had, y'all shared

[Bricktown Toine]:

In that

[Candace]:

communal

[Bricktown Toine]:

line? No,

[Candace]:

space.

[Bricktown Toine]:

everywhere I was. And like, you know, some of that, I just like to believe that maybe I'm somewhat of a cool person that people just rock with, but I'll also attribute it to the Detroit vibes. But like there were just people everywhere

[Stew]:

Thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that were, yeah, you know,

[Candace]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

two things can't be true. It was just, it felt dope everywhere I went. And back to that idea of just being in a space where nearly 80% of the people at least look like you, right? And you're

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

living in some way, a shared experience that has to come off with it. Like, no, I'm just, I'm. Brother, we both living through the same thing right now. Like, hey, I see you and being seen and felt like, no, I'm just interacting with everybody. It felt good. I loved it out there.

[Stew]:

I just noticed

[Candace]:

What

[Stew]:

that

[Candace]:

I

[Stew]:

when

[Candace]:

really

[Stew]:

I walked

[Candace]:

would be

[Stew]:

over to

[Candace]:

interested-

[Stew]:

the,

[Candace]:

Oh go ahead.

[Stew]:

I was gonna say, I just noticed that when I walked to the food truck while Zayn was in line, like he had this big goofy smile on his face. It was like, yo, he's having a good time over

[Bricktown Toine]:

They

[Stew]:

here.

[Bricktown Toine]:

had a

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

great

[Stew]:

don't know

[Bricktown Toine]:

time

[Stew]:

what they

[Bricktown Toine]:

with

[Stew]:

talking

[Bricktown Toine]:

the people.

[Stew]:

about, but he's having

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Stew]:

a blast.

[Bricktown Toine]:

also had just like

[Candace]:

That must have been after

[Bricktown Toine]:

became

[Candace]:

they

[Bricktown Toine]:

a dad

[Candace]:

carmined

[Bricktown Toine]:

officially.

[Candace]:

out his muscles.

[Stew]:

Had to be,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh, you just

[Stew]:

had

[Bricktown Toine]:

had to

[Stew]:

to

[Bricktown Toine]:

be

[Stew]:

be.

[Bricktown Toine]:

hype me up, hype gas me up. Like I will take all of it. Hey

[Candace]:

No,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Stu,

[Candace]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

you

[Candace]:

I was

[Bricktown Toine]:

see

[Candace]:

gonna

[Bricktown Toine]:

my grandma?

[Candace]:

say is... Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'll

[Candace]:

go

[Bricktown Toine]:

say this

[Candace]:

ahead.

[Bricktown Toine]:

real quick. Stu, did you see my grandma called us both handsome on the podcast page

[Stew]:

trying

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Stew]:

to

[Bricktown Toine]:

other

[Stew]:

tell

[Bricktown Toine]:

day?

[Stew]:

you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

We need to talk about that. All right, go ahead Candace,

[Stew]:

I didn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

go ahead.

[Stew]:

make

[Bricktown Toine]:

Go

[Stew]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

ahead.

[Stew]:

up.

[Candace]:

No, what I was going to say was I'd be curious, well, one of the reasons why I also asked, when was that stat that you pulled out that 77%, when was that published was because I'd be curious to see what it was even a few years ago. Because to

[Stew]:

I'm not

[Candace]:

me,

[Stew]:

missing.

[Candace]:

I didn't take you guys to this area, but there's the campus marshes area and a couple other areas that are becoming increasingly more. gentrified,

[Stew]:

Hmm

[Candace]:

right? So a lot of times when I go back, right, I see more and more non-black people, right, there. So to me, I was like, oh, 77% still. I mean, yeah, that's a great number. But I just wonder like, I wonder when like what the trend right over the last probably 10 to 15 years like looks like, because there's we like intentionally write, greet down, a lot of them ain't gonna be in there. But if we would have went to like that campus, Marsh's area or some other areas, like you probably would have got a different, still would have been super nice, right? Still would have been super genuine people. It just wouldn't have been like as black of an experience as what you guys.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, and that's where I think there's like that difference between urban revitalization and gentrification,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

right? There are two different things. And the

[Stew]:

Distinctly.

[Bricktown Toine]:

property values, I can imagine without knowing the statistics to your point, Candice, or the trend, but the property values are such where you would invite people who have had more finances over time and systemically been able to go and then invest in communities in ways that benefit maybe not necessarily the people who hail from those communities. So we

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

did not experience that. actually and I was that was the thing I was wondering like where are I didn't see a lot of the houses in Detroit though because We were downtown most of the time and by the water

[Stew]:

I did. We went

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

to, I think it was called University something. I don't remember the name of the neighborhood, but it was,

[Candace]:

Oh, the restaurant I went to on Saturday or something, right?

[Stew]:

we went to

[Candace]:

Before

[Stew]:

Barta.

[Candace]:

you met up with us.

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Candace]:

No, no, no. Friday was your Sunday dinner, right?

[Stew]:

Yeah, barter was after we left the food truck. Was that Sunday?

[Candace]:

Yeah, but Saturday y'all went

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

to, cause you were over in like, Lebanon area, you went to,

[Stew]:

Yes, yes,

[Candace]:

over there, yeah.

[Stew]:

the vegan place. I forgot what it's called. It was

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

good,

[Candace]:

I don't

[Stew]:

though.

[Candace]:

remember. But you would have seen more houses over there

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Candace]:

in that area.

[Stew]:

They reminded me of Chicago because I spend a lot of time in Chicago, like the different houses, the styles of the houses, the large bay windows, red brick, a lot of that, a lot of very sturdy homes. But a lot of them that you can tell that they kept a lot of the history on of the outside there and probably just redid the inside. But I love those kinds of houses. They remind me of home. They always kind of feel safe. There's a level of security, I think, with brick that I just always associate with the houses being really sturdy. But I love those large bay windows. I love that style of house.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm. Candice,

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah, the whole panel here, random switch. And I kind of wanted to talk about the baby shower, but I don't know if we'll get there. So in this regard, I'm thinking to Candice, what have you learned about traveling with us? Cause this is not our first trip. This is our first trip to your home city, but we traveled a bit.

[Candace]:

Yeah, this is what we... Well, this is only like what, the third time, second or third,

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

no, more than second.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I guess you're right. Yeah, I don't

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

know.

[Stew]:

did.

[Bricktown Toine]:

We're not at all Gary and Ashley

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

sailing to

[Stew]:

don't

[Bricktown Toine]:

distant

[Stew]:

know what

[Bricktown Toine]:

lands

[Stew]:

I'm doing.

[Bricktown Toine]:

with you all, right? But I feel like, especially because we're pretty integrated into the friend group in circle, right? And I think you learn certain things. And Stu would ask you the same thing. Like, what have you learned about traveling with Candice? Because we've done Colorado.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm,

[Bricktown Toine]:

This

[Stew]:

Denver.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is Detroit, which may not feel like travel for you, Candice, because it's home, right? But

[Candace]:

Still

[Bricktown Toine]:

Atlanta,

[Candace]:

travel.

[Bricktown Toine]:

could count in there. Deep Creek.

[Stew]:

Be great.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Let's look at this.

[Candace]:

Deep

[Bricktown Toine]:

Four.

[Candace]:

Creek. Yeah,

[Stew]:

Ah, that was funny.

[Candace]:

four. Deep Creek was very fun.

[Stew]:

That was fun.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

And we went to pick

[Candace]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

her

[Candace]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

up.

[Candace]:

a

[Bricktown Toine]:

Right,

[Candace]:

very

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Candace]:

good

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Candace]:

time.

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

like,

[Stew]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Stew]:

did.

[Bricktown Toine]:

gave,

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

You

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Candace]:

guys

[Stew]:

we

[Candace]:

also

[Stew]:

did go

[Candace]:

picked

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Stew]:

pick

[Bricktown Toine]:

dope.

[Candace]:

me

[Stew]:

Candace

[Candace]:

up.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

up. That's right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah,

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

that

[Candace]:

you

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Candace]:

did.

[Bricktown Toine]:

very bosses.

[Candace]:

Deep Creek was very fun. No, what have I learned about traveling with you all? We're always gonna have good food,

[Stew]:

That's right.

[Candace]:

which

[Stew]:

I knew

[Candace]:

is

[Stew]:

that

[Candace]:

great.

[Stew]:

was going to be the first one.

[Candace]:

But

[Bricktown Toine]:

lunch

[Candace]:

I mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

break.

[Candace]:

like, I appreciate that, right?

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Candace]:

So we're always gonna have good food. I'm gonna go back to the broke statement that allegedly

[Stew]:

Thanks for watching!

[Candace]:

I said to you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

No.

[Stew]:

Where's my clapping drop? Hold on.

[Candace]:

that I

[Bricktown Toine]:

Hehehe

[Candace]:

allegedly said to you. I think what I mean by that is when we go somewhere, we don't have to like skimp on the experience.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

Like I'm very big on experiences. So like, it's not like I'm traveling with y'all and y'all like, all right, well, we can have a nice dinner and then we gonna go to McDonald's. Like, and

[Bricktown Toine]:

Let's

[Candace]:

it's not

[Bricktown Toine]:

get

[Candace]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

this.

[Candace]:

like

[Stew]:

That'll never,

[Candace]:

we

[Stew]:

you'll

[Candace]:

have

[Stew]:

never

[Candace]:

to have,

[Stew]:

hear that.

[Candace]:

it's not that like every meal has to be a $300 meal, but it's just like we, all collectively like, um...

[Bricktown Toine]:

It's understood that at least one will be.

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

That's

[Candace]:

True,

[Bricktown Toine]:

just what it is, like, it has

[Stew]:

And

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Stew]:

there's

[Candace]:

but

[Bricktown Toine]:

be.

[Candace]:

I'm just

[Stew]:

no

[Candace]:

saying,

[Stew]:

bones.

[Candace]:

I don't have to worry about the type of experience that I'm going to have.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

I mean, that's first, right? Second, I think we can all have our moments of downtime, right? Because we've shared, okay, so Deep Creek, we had a house, right? Denver, we had a house that we shared, right? And we can all have our collective moments of downtime and still be in the same space.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Which is super important on

[Stew]:

It

[Bricktown Toine]:

group

[Stew]:

is.

[Bricktown Toine]:

trips.

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Super

[Candace]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

important,

[Candace]:

mean, because then you

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah.

[Candace]:

don't feel like you have to be like on all the time. Like you guys like people are also self-sufficient. So like

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

you create your own moments of joy, like when you need to and then

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

like you can have the collective moment. Right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm. Yeah, Candice

[Candace]:

But.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is a voracious reader, so she might just tuck off and go read a book. And you'd

[Stew]:

Nah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

be like,

[Stew]:

for

[Bricktown Toine]:

oh

[Stew]:

real.

[Bricktown Toine]:

no, Candice, she cool? She

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

all right over there?

[Stew]:

She

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

coming in with a

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

book in her hand.

[Candace]:

like literally, like there's nothing. Yeah, I just need like some time

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

of silence. Y'all can even still talk. Like when we were on the, we went sailing with Gary and Ashley since you brought it up.

[Stew]:

Hahaha

[Candace]:

There was one day, like

[Bricktown Toine]:

Selling where? Selling where?

[Candace]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

Come

[Candace]:

started,

[Bricktown Toine]:

on, give the people your life.

[Candace]:

I don't know where this, I think we were somewhere in St. Lucia, but I started

[Stew]:

light.

[Candace]:

and ended a book. I mean, I started and finished a book the same day, but obviously over a- a few hours and it was while people were like jumping on and off the boat, having drinks, music playing, like all that. Like if I like that

[Bricktown Toine]:

It was fantastic

[Candace]:

there

[Bricktown Toine]:

life

[Candace]:

may

[Bricktown Toine]:

Candice

[Candace]:

just

[Stew]:

I

[Candace]:

be

[Bricktown Toine]:

lives.

[Stew]:

know,

[Candace]:

time,

[Stew]:

right? Peace.

[Candace]:

there may just be time where like I need to just tuck off. Um, and you guys like allow for that, right? Um, but I also think like everything that everybody wants to do is going to get done. So it's not like, like we'll do a little bit of something for everybody or it could just be that like we all kind of want to do similar things. So it like it. you know.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Like when we all traveled to Target so I could get these headphones

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

in Colorado.

[Stew]:

that's a good shout out.

[Candace]:

I didn't remember that.

[Stew]:

Okay.

[Candace]:

But yeah, no, I mean, it's fun. I mean, I guess I should have just led with that, but like we have a good time. Like

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

it's never there. I will say that there hasn't been a moment where Mike's been like, oh, we're gonna go with you guys here. And I'm like, okay, like,

[Stew]:

Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe

[Candace]:

so.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Because if there was ever gonna be one, Detroit was gonna be that one for me, but I

[Stew]:

Hehehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

had to go for my child. I was like, mmm, Detroit! Heh heh heh.

[Candace]:

And I knew that was going to be, and I knew that was yours. Without

[Bricktown Toine]:

it

[Candace]:

you even saying that, I knew that was yours because I kept being like, Hey, you know, this did like, they set up their arrangements yet. Like

[Stew]:

You

[Candace]:

what,

[Stew]:

okay?

[Candace]:

like him and in Haun, just him and in Haun figuring out what's the shortest amount of time you can be in that space.

[Stew]:

I'm going to go ahead and close the video.

[Candace]:

It's like, dang, we don't even get it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But I had a lot to do that

[Stew]:

Be

[Bricktown Toine]:

weekend.

[Stew]:

a while.

[Bricktown Toine]:

It wasn't just about

[Candace]:

No,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the shortest amount

[Candace]:

I know,

[Bricktown Toine]:

of time in Detroit

[Candace]:

I know,

[Bricktown Toine]:

yet.

[Candace]:

I know, but I'm just saying it was, I knew it. I knew it wasn't like the same level of excitement. as, I don't know, I could

[Stew]:

And now

[Candace]:

make

[Stew]:

he

[Candace]:

up a

[Stew]:

loves

[Candace]:

random

[Stew]:

it.

[Candace]:

place,

[Stew]:

Look at that.

[Candace]:

but...

[Stew]:

Look how that worked

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

out.

[Bricktown Toine]:

no, I'm trying to go back legitimately. Like I was sad that I left as early as I left. I had a blast.

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Maybe

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

even

[Stew]:

want

[Bricktown Toine]:

next

[Stew]:

to go

[Bricktown Toine]:

time

[Stew]:

back

[Bricktown Toine]:

we'll

[Stew]:

to.

[Bricktown Toine]:

touch Canada.

[Stew]:

Yeah, that

[Candace]:

Maybe.

[Stew]:

would be great. That would be great.

[Bricktown Toine]:

We didn't even talk about being merely a miles or so across the water from Windsor, Canada, in the beauty

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

over there while we

[Candace]:

They

[Bricktown Toine]:

were

[Candace]:

did

[Bricktown Toine]:

inhaling.

[Candace]:

look lit

[Stew]:

They

[Candace]:

at

[Stew]:

dead,

[Candace]:

night

[Stew]:

you know, for real.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Quite

[Candace]:

while

[Bricktown Toine]:

literally.

[Candace]:

they told

[Bricktown Toine]:

Quite

[Candace]:

you that

[Bricktown Toine]:

literally.

[Candace]:

the river was closed

[Stew]:

Close the

[Candace]:

down.

[Stew]:

10.

[Candace]:

Over there they had Ferris

[Bricktown Toine]:

It's Canada

[Candace]:

wheel and

[Bricktown Toine]:

like,

[Candace]:

everything

[Bricktown Toine]:

hey, we

[Candace]:

else

[Bricktown Toine]:

open

[Candace]:

going.

[Bricktown Toine]:

y'all. Yeah. Alcohol,

[Stew]:

We had a boat

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Stew]:

fly

[Bricktown Toine]:

drinking age is younger,

[Stew]:

drop

[Bricktown Toine]:

all that

[Stew]:

right?

[Bricktown Toine]:

stuff.

[Candace]:

I haven't been there since I was 19.

[Stew]:

Oh really?

[Candace]:

I mean,

[Stew]:

Oh, it's time to go back.

[Candace]:

yeah, because for us, like that was the like, okay, you can drink when you're 19,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

like, and all you needed was your license. So yeah,

[Stew]:

Perfect.

[Candace]:

you just go over there. Now you need to, like, why we really haven't been is because I never remember to bring my passport. Why am

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

I taking my passport home? Like,

[Stew]:

Right.

[Candace]:

now

[Stew]:

It

[Candace]:

I

[Stew]:

feels

[Candace]:

see

[Stew]:

wrong.

[Candace]:

why, but I mean, like now you need a whole passport. But anyways, all that to say, I don't think there's any, like I haven't, like, thought of any particular like, you know, irks or icks or whatever people call them about

[Stew]:

I'm gonna

[Candace]:

traveling

[Stew]:

shoot.

[Candace]:

with y'all. I mean, I think, I mean, this is a good

[Bricktown Toine]:

No,

[Candace]:

time.

[Bricktown Toine]:

we appreciate that. That makes us feel good. I mean, I hope our listeners feel like that's a great thing. Like we're not just weirdos who people

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

don't want to travel with. Weirdos that people want to travel with, you know,

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

isn't

[Candace]:

no,

[Bricktown Toine]:

it?

[Candace]:

it's fine. Food, we're gonna have food. We're gonna have some type of outdoor experience.

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Oh

[Candace]:

And

[Bricktown Toine]:

yes,

[Stew]:

We

[Candace]:

we're

[Stew]:

gonna

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Candace]:

going

[Stew]:

take

[Bricktown Toine]:

are absolutely

[Stew]:

some

[Candace]:

to,

[Stew]:

content?

[Bricktown Toine]:

going to have out there. That

[Candace]:

we'll

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Candace]:

have

[Bricktown Toine]:

fun

[Candace]:

outdoor

[Bricktown Toine]:

in Colorado

[Candace]:

experience.

[Bricktown Toine]:

when we went to like, we drove through a, through a nature preserve or

[Candace]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

like a wildlife.

[Stew]:

That's

[Candace]:

remember

[Stew]:

where

[Candace]:

we

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

saw

[Stew]:

we stayed

[Candace]:

those Bison

[Stew]:

on one.

[Candace]:

or what were they? Like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

They

[Candace]:

yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

were bison.

[Stew]:

Oh,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

I don't

[Bricktown Toine]:

What?

[Stew]:

remember.

[Candace]:

When we

[Stew]:

That

[Candace]:

were

[Stew]:

was

[Candace]:

in the

[Stew]:

beautiful,

[Candace]:

car.

[Stew]:

though. Now,

[Bricktown Toine]:

You

[Stew]:

I don't

[Bricktown Toine]:

don't

[Stew]:

remember.

[Bricktown Toine]:

remember.

[Stew]:

No, I don't remember what

[Bricktown Toine]:

It was

[Stew]:

they

[Bricktown Toine]:

one

[Stew]:

were.

[Bricktown Toine]:

of the most impactful

[Stew]:

I don't

[Bricktown Toine]:

experiences

[Stew]:

remember if they

[Bricktown Toine]:

of

[Stew]:

were a

[Bricktown Toine]:

your

[Stew]:

bison

[Bricktown Toine]:

life Stuart.

[Stew]:

or. OK,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'm just kidding.

[Stew]:

I don't know what kind of animal they were. I don't remember.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yes, I believe they were bystander. So thank you for your reflection, Candice. We appreciate those Stuart. What have you learned about traveling with Candice?

[Stew]:

I learned that Candice is not going to try to do too much. She's absolutely going to be, she's going to take her time and be by herself and have her moment and then she's going to come back. One thing about Candice that's really interesting is she can be, just like she said, she can be sitting on the couch, reading her book, be in the book, but also hear everything that's happening around

[Bricktown Toine]:

Well,

[Stew]:

her

[Bricktown Toine]:

then,

[Stew]:

to the

[Bricktown Toine]:

yes.

[Stew]:

point where she'll pause in the book and finish or make a comment about something that we were talking about. which I really appreciate her presence

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

because that's how she shows up. And I love that she's still, she's taking care of her soul, but she's also aware of what's happening around her, which I just appreciate just in general.

[Bricktown Toine]:

That's good. All right, moving on. Or should I

[Candace]:

You're

[Bricktown Toine]:

answer

[Stew]:

Wait,

[Candace]:

not

[Bricktown Toine]:

it as

[Stew]:

what?

[Candace]:

gonna

[Bricktown Toine]:

well?

[Candace]:

share?

[Stew]:

Yeah, what? Ha

[Candace]:

I was

[Stew]:

ha ha.

[Candace]:

like, wait a second. I was like...

[Bricktown Toine]:

So yeah, I'm just being weird. So I would say Candice is a logistician, which probably comes to mind. Like just on the front end is Candice is going to have the logistics laid out for each move or. question whoever's leading in the moment's logistics.

[Stew]:

and make sure they know

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Stew]:

what

[Bricktown Toine]:

then

[Stew]:

they

[Bricktown Toine]:

you've

[Stew]:

talking

[Bricktown Toine]:

got to,

[Stew]:

about.

[Bricktown Toine]:

you legitimately have to win Candice's confidence. You're

[Stew]:

Nah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

like,

[Stew]:

for

[Bricktown Toine]:

all right,

[Stew]:

real.

[Bricktown Toine]:

this person's got, this person is a thinker, they're gonna think through it. That was like first trip ever. I was like, oh no. And then even back to that, she's gonna be in the conversation, but she'll be fact checking. Okay, yeah, this is the shortest way to get there.

[Stew]:

But

[Bricktown Toine]:

And so that's definitely number one. So it

[Stew]:

she's a leader.

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Stew]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

like,

[Stew]:

mean, it makes sense. Like in

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah,

[Stew]:

my

[Bricktown Toine]:

no,

[Stew]:

mind,

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

felt

[Stew]:

like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

like

[Stew]:

okay.

[Bricktown Toine]:

when I passed the Candice test, I was like, ooh, I

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

got some trust. Like the speed of trust, it's a thing.

[Stew]:

Okay.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Um,

[Stew]:

Is that

[Bricktown Toine]:

so

[Stew]:

picking the

[Bricktown Toine]:

then

[Stew]:

restaurant? We good. I bet.

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah, it's

[Stew]:

It's going

[Bricktown Toine]:

like,

[Stew]:

to be good.

[Bricktown Toine]:

uh, but that's important because everybody's got,

[Stew]:

It's

[Bricktown Toine]:

when

[Stew]:

true.

[Bricktown Toine]:

you, when you're collaborating, right. In teams, you have to know everybody's strengths.

[Stew]:

That's right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And then you also was like, okay, well, there's a way that we like doing things, but let's see who we're letting lead in this moment.

[Stew]:

Great.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So there's that, uh, to absolutely always have Jen, right. You got to know

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

somebody sick drink. Um, that's not at all like Candice's illustrious. Everybody has their signatures. So there's probably a third that I can't recall right now, but I'll, go back to this idea of just Candace is a fun time.

[Stew]:

Mm-mm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Candace likes to have a good time. Like, and I feel like coming from Detroit, recognizing how much fun people in that city, there's just not pomp and circumstances. We just having a good time in whatever space we're in. And that's what I loved about the city so much. And thinking about Candace, I'm seeing you right now

[Stew]:

Music.

[Bricktown Toine]:

in Atlanta on that couch with that arm going up. Yeah, no, Candace

[Stew]:

Music.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is a music person,

[Stew]:

Music

[Bricktown Toine]:

man.

[Stew]:

person. What? I can't

[Bricktown Toine]:

Like,

[Stew]:

believe I

[Bricktown Toine]:

Candace

[Stew]:

didn't say

[Bricktown Toine]:

is

[Stew]:

that.

[Bricktown Toine]:

going to jam.

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

She's going to jam. And that's what I mean about the good time. Once the music gets going, it's just, she's fun to be around and

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

you're fun to be around Candice. So we know that it'll be enjoyable

[Candace]:

Thanks guys.

[Bricktown Toine]:

when we're out there. Yeah, and just, and helpful.

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

That's another one that, and I really do appreciate that. I'm sure Stuart does his acts of services, his love language, but

[Stew]:

Oh yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

anytime. whether it's a trip or just times when we've been around each other, right? You've been extremely helpful. You've been helpful for me and business and all these other spaces and just like you're, you care for us as whole people. So that's something that we appreciate.

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

Aww, this is fucking beautiful.

[Candace]:

Thanks guys.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Hmm. Alright. Yeah. You know, gotta give our friends

[Candace]:

Thanks.

[Bricktown Toine]:

our flowers in season two.

[Stew]:

Yeah, we do. Absolutely. We appreciate you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

All right. So, uh, one thing I want to say in closing, cause we never really got to the story. We're all over the place. We're a little rusty y'all. Y'all know

[Stew]:

talking

[Bricktown Toine]:

we

[Stew]:

about

[Bricktown Toine]:

have

[Stew]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

not

[Stew]:

telescope.

[Bricktown Toine]:

been back in, in weeks. Oh no, that dude with the telescope, like we just, you want

[Stew]:

What's

[Bricktown Toine]:

to talk

[Stew]:

this

[Bricktown Toine]:

about it so

[Stew]:

up?

[Bricktown Toine]:

we can just throw it up as post production content. Candice

[Stew]:

top five

[Candace]:

telescope.

[Bricktown Toine]:

missed it.

[Stew]:

moments

[Bricktown Toine]:

Talk about that

[Stew]:

of

[Bricktown Toine]:

guy.

[Stew]:

all time.

[Bricktown Toine]:

No, Detroit

[Candace]:

Telescope!

[Bricktown Toine]:

is random as hell.

[Stew]:

Yeah, we were walking

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Stew]:

in, I guess that was Greetown too, right? Like, right as you're about to make that right turn down the street where

[Bricktown Toine]:

We

[Stew]:

the fleets

[Bricktown Toine]:

only

[Stew]:

place

[Bricktown Toine]:

covered

[Stew]:

is.

[Bricktown Toine]:

about like 10 minutes of walking in general.

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

So

[Stew]:

that's

[Bricktown Toine]:

it was

[Stew]:

true.

[Bricktown Toine]:

somewhere between Greek town and the river walk. That's

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it was somewhere over there.

[Stew]:

And I mean, we're just walking. We're trying to get back to, I think we're trying to find food at that point. And we see this guy with this, just like the tripod of some sort. We didn't make it out in the initial kind of sighting, but once we turned back to see him set it up, like he had a telescope that he was putting together. I think it was like a wooden colored type

[Bricktown Toine]:

Well, here's the

[Stew]:

telescope.

[Bricktown Toine]:

thing. One, it's like 11 o'clock at night. You're just not expecting to see people

[Stew]:

No.

[Bricktown Toine]:

with telescopes in general.

[Stew]:

Underneath

[Bricktown Toine]:

I mean,

[Stew]:

the streetlight,

[Bricktown Toine]:

you would

[Stew]:

no

[Bricktown Toine]:

do

[Stew]:

less.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it at night,

[Candace]:

I was

[Bricktown Toine]:

but

[Candace]:

gonna say

[Bricktown Toine]:

the sky

[Candace]:

it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is filled with pollution.

[Stew]:

right smoke.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So what is he looking at, first of all?

[Stew]:

What does he know that we don't know?

[Bricktown Toine]:

He is one of the 80% black citizens in the city. So just one, we're not used to black dudes just being astronomers like that.

[Stew]:

True,

[Bricktown Toine]:

So that in

[Stew]:

although

[Bricktown Toine]:

and of itself

[Stew]:

Xan

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Stew]:

does

[Bricktown Toine]:

just

[Stew]:

have

[Bricktown Toine]:

something

[Stew]:

a telescope.

[Bricktown Toine]:

we weren't, we were not expecting. He's got on like a hat like he's in the rice patties of Thailand or something like that So I'm even shocked about his wardrobe

[Stew]:

His fit.

[Bricktown Toine]:

being in general But so that like that fit the astronomy all of that. I was like, okay This is just a wild city everything I saw in Detroit was like this a while You never know what you're gonna get

[Stew]:

but he

[Bricktown Toine]:

every

[Stew]:

set

[Bricktown Toine]:

nothing

[Stew]:

it up

[Bricktown Toine]:

makes sense

[Stew]:

right under a lamppost. That

[Bricktown Toine]:

Ew,

[Stew]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

nothing

[Stew]:

killing

[Bricktown Toine]:

about

[Stew]:

me, it

[Bricktown Toine]:

what,

[Stew]:

made no

[Bricktown Toine]:

where

[Stew]:

sense.

[Bricktown Toine]:

did you get

[Stew]:

Yeah, that's

[Bricktown Toine]:

it, sir?

[Stew]:

right.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Where did you get this telescope? Now, I got a telescope in my living room, so like

[Stew]:

I know

[Bricktown Toine]:

I can't talk

[Stew]:

I was

[Bricktown Toine]:

too

[Stew]:

just saying

[Bricktown Toine]:

much.

[Stew]:

you

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Stew]:

got a

[Bricktown Toine]:

do

[Stew]:

telescope

[Bricktown Toine]:

have a telescope

[Stew]:

talking about weirdos.

[Bricktown Toine]:

in my living room.

[Stew]:

You got one.

[Bricktown Toine]:

But I'm not

[Candace]:

well,

[Bricktown Toine]:

outside in

[Candace]:

but

[Bricktown Toine]:

a pollution-filled

[Candace]:

he doesn't take it

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

sky.

[Candace]:

outside

[Stew]:

true.

[Candace]:

under the bridge. Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, I'm peeping

[Candace]:

I mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

at my neighbors.

[Candace]:

that's

[Bricktown Toine]:

Just

[Candace]:

strange.

[Bricktown Toine]:

kidding.

[Candace]:

Wish I would have said that. Wish I would have seen that.

[Stew]:

Oh, we got pictures.

[Bricktown Toine]:

You know

[Candace]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'm going

[Candace]:

interesting.

[Bricktown Toine]:

to take pictures.

[Candace]:

But

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'm going to capture everything.

[Candace]:

you guys did keep saying like, Detroit is a wild city. And

[Stew]:

It's

[Candace]:

so

[Stew]:

a wild

[Candace]:

I kept,

[Stew]:

city.

[Candace]:

that is

[Bricktown Toine]:

I mean

[Candace]:

why,

[Bricktown Toine]:

metal detectors.

[Candace]:

we didn't talk about this, but

[Stew]:

Let's

[Candace]:

like

[Stew]:

go.

[Candace]:

when you told me like figure out a song, honestly, that's why I picked the Welcome to Detroit intro from Dilla. Like

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

one, just in general, like just

[Stew]:

Dilla Duh Mea

[Candace]:

Dilla. But two, like listen to the words. Like that is what y'all experienced. Like I should have actually sent you guys that but like as you, so you could play it as you're getting off the plane. And then

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Candace]:

you really would have had like a whole like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

because I was

[Candace]:

okay,

[Bricktown Toine]:

just listening to mad payroll

[Candace]:

three,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Giovanni.

[Candace]:

two,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Ha

[Candace]:

one.

[Bricktown Toine]:

ha ha.

[Stew]:

Oh my god.

[Bricktown Toine]:

By look, boss your life up gang. Oh, and Detroit has affected me so much that I was looking at Cartier glasses like two days ago. So

[Stew]:

Yes, that's true. Have the pictures

[Candace]:

Gotta

[Stew]:

to prove

[Candace]:

get a pair

[Stew]:

it.

[Candace]:

of buffs.

[Bricktown Toine]:

next time I touch down on my head of buffs, it's just gotta happen.

[Stew]:

That's the one thing that like you will see like prevalent in Detroit are the buffs. Like that is consistent.

[Bricktown Toine]:

to the

[Stew]:

I mean,

[Bricktown Toine]:

point

[Stew]:

we talked

[Bricktown Toine]:

where

[Stew]:

about wardrobe, but like I feel like everyone has a pair of those.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, I start questioning like, like I was actually from Detroit, like, man, this is buffs real or not? Like you start like, I'm starting

[Stew]:

Hahaha!

[Bricktown Toine]:

to feel like like, like charging people up, like, let me go G check, son. All

[Candace]:

You

[Stew]:

Hehehehehe

[Candace]:

like

[Bricktown Toine]:

right,

[Candace]:

it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

so.

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

So Candace back on the music note, because we are at the top of the hour, we will not talk about the baby shower on this podcast. Because

[Candace]:

Dang, and I had something I was gonna say about that too.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Nah, go ahead. Look, we can extend it. I mean, it's fine. This is our first episode. We can do whatever we want. We're designing it as we're building it.

[Candace]:

Okay, so real quick on the baby shower. Cause I think we were gonna talk about like funny moments from the baby shower, right?

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Candace]:

And so I was thinking about it cause I was like, oh, like, you know, like what real funny moment. And this isn't necessarily like a funny-ish moment, but it's kind of funny. So when Liz's grandma was praying.

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Mm-hmm. So y'all give him the scene. Grandma's up at the front of the room.

[Candace]:

So,

[Bricktown Toine]:

It's about

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

40 people.

[Candace]:

so we're about to, she's blessing the food because we're about to eat, right? And so, yeah, so Liz and Xander are in the front. She's in between them, arms around, arms wrapped around them. And then we're all, you know, in the, standing behind.

[Bricktown Toine]:

the audience,

[Candace]:

So

[Bricktown Toine]:

this is whatever

[Candace]:

I was

[Bricktown Toine]:

we'll

[Candace]:

gonna

[Bricktown Toine]:

call

[Candace]:

say like

[Bricktown Toine]:

it.

[Candace]:

in the audience,

[Stew]:

I was gonna

[Candace]:

but

[Stew]:

say

[Candace]:

then I was

[Stew]:

audience.

[Candace]:

like, that's strange. But anyway, so she's praying and I mean, she praying, but what was really funny to me. was she like, it was like she wanted that prayer to come through her whole body. Cause she was

[Stew]:

Thank you.

[Candace]:

aggressively,

[Bricktown Toine]:

He's a physical

[Candace]:

not

[Bricktown Toine]:

prayer.

[Candace]:

aggressively,

[Stew]:

It was clutch.

[Candace]:

she, it wasn't aggressive, but it was very like intentional of like rubbing down, rubbing the inside. And honestly, as I was reflecting back, I was like, if I could get a back rub with that same level of intensity,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah,

[Stew]:

Heheheheheheheheh

[Candace]:

my back

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah.

[Candace]:

would be all right

[Bricktown Toine]:

The power passed

[Candace]:

there.

[Bricktown Toine]:

through. And then like grandma's like shorter than me, right? Liz's

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

grandma, so like, she was rubbing

[Stew]:

So you should

[Bricktown Toine]:

from

[Stew]:

like

[Bricktown Toine]:

like

[Stew]:

reach it out. Ha

[Bricktown Toine]:

right under

[Stew]:

ha.

[Bricktown Toine]:

my armpit to like right, like my hip bone. So it was like, she was getting a little cheek every now and then on the rubs. That was my... Yeah. It was a...

[Candace]:

I was like, wow, this is, okay grandma, you get that prayer

[Bricktown Toine]:

And that was

[Candace]:

through.

[Bricktown Toine]:

a...

[Stew]:

It's the muscles,

[Bricktown Toine]:

It was a strong

[Stew]:

man.

[Bricktown Toine]:

grip. Yeah, no, but it didn't like hold up. I'm gripping back So

[Stew]:

Bye.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I got gripping her shoulder. Well, she couldn't must stop so we're engaged in this mutual gripping now Like I guess I'm supposed to squeeze

[Stew]:

I'm

[Bricktown Toine]:

just as artists

[Stew]:

sorry.

[Bricktown Toine]:

squeeze. I don't know what I'm supposed to do

[Candace]:

No, but the baby shower was beautiful. It

[Stew]:

It

[Candace]:

was

[Stew]:

was

[Candace]:

very

[Stew]:

beautiful.

[Candace]:

beautiful.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Thank you,

[Candace]:

Thank you

[Bricktown Toine]:

yeah,

[Candace]:

for inviting

[Bricktown Toine]:

thank you

[Candace]:

us.

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

for

[Candace]:

And

[Bricktown Toine]:

being

[Candace]:

just

[Bricktown Toine]:

there

[Candace]:

as much as I am all about Detroit, Liz's family is all about Flint. And

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

I appreciated

[Stew]:

well I believe

[Candace]:

that.

[Stew]:

that.

[Candace]:

Because, I mean, her cousin was like, yeah, I'm a Flintstone. And I was like, I love it. I love

[Bricktown Toine]:

I've

[Candace]:

it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

never, yo, what I never

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

thought

[Stew]:

nuts.

[Bricktown Toine]:

about, like I call Liz Wilma and we have this

[Stew]:

All

[Bricktown Toine]:

like

[Stew]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

Flintstones

[Stew]:

time.

[Bricktown Toine]:

motif in our marriage, but I never even thought about the fact that she was from Flint when I say

[Stew]:

Boom.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that.

[Candace]:

Oh, that's what they're known

[Stew]:

Play

[Candace]:

as

[Stew]:

style.

[Candace]:

Flintstones.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I never thought about that. Huh.

[Candace]:

Mm-hmm. Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Noted.

[Stew]:

Artwork coming soon.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah. I mean, it's already out there, you know,

[Stew]:

Well,

[Bricktown Toine]:

but like,

[Stew]:

yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

okay, yeah. And I had never, I was only in Flint for like, cause the baby shower was in Fenton, but I was

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

only in Flint for like maybe 10 minutes. I picked Liz up from Flint and I was like, so this is Flint, huh? But I just looked at downtown. I was like, I'm getting so much Michigan. Michigan landscape and geography, topography

[Stew]:

Yeah, that's dope.

[Bricktown Toine]:

is actually just, just

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

beautiful. I loved seeing the trees. It's not so random, but y'all know I like nature. So I really do.

[Candace]:

No, you know what's a really beautiful place in Michigan? Traverse City.

[Bricktown Toine]:

How far is that

[Stew]:

I've heard

[Bricktown Toine]:

from

[Stew]:

the

[Bricktown Toine]:

Detroit?

[Stew]:

name of it, but I've never been.

[Candace]:

I don't know, I'll have to see. But it's great. They have a cherry festival every year,

[Stew]:

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

[Candace]:

bomb cherries. But no, it's like that scenery there is

[Bricktown Toine]:

So

[Candace]:

really

[Bricktown Toine]:

specific.

[Candace]:

great.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Best cherries in the nation, Traverse

[Stew]:

Hey man,

[Bricktown Toine]:

City.

[Stew]:

about to have a

[Candace]:

Listen,

[Stew]:

Manhattan.

[Candace]:

Traverse City. Yeah.

[Stew]:

Hehehehe

[Bricktown Toine]:

All right, give us some baby shower reflections since we went there.

[Stew]:

Man, for me, it was just amazing to be able to show up for you, man, because just like everything you've been through in life, which is well chronicled and documented on the podcast. So go check out season one if you need to know all of that. But it was just a nice culminating moment that showed the blending of families, because we didn't really get a chance to do that when you got married, because it was during the pandemic. So this is like the first time that all of us, like all of the family was kind of like in the same room and mingling

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Stew]:

and having

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Stew]:

conversations.

[Bricktown Toine]:

be fair, I just want to be responsible with our platform. So it wasn't my whole family either.

[Stew]:

No, it wasn't your whole

[Bricktown Toine]:

There were

[Stew]:

family,

[Bricktown Toine]:

parts

[Stew]:

but it,

[Bricktown Toine]:

of my side of the village missing. Yeah.

[Stew]:

but because, and that's why it was an honor to show up for you in that moment. You know what I mean? Because we became the representation of, you know, who you are on that side, which I think was great. And it was just good to see, it's good to see, you know, where Liz comes from and the people that are in her community. So yeah, I think that

[Bricktown Toine]:

strong

[Stew]:

was,

[Bricktown Toine]:

classy family grandma said in

[Candace]:

Classic,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the

[Stew]:

that was, yeah, the Classy

[Candace]:

loyal,

[Stew]:

family.

[Bricktown Toine]:

prayer classy

[Stew]:

They,

[Bricktown Toine]:

loyal family

[Candace]:

loyal family.

[Stew]:

It was good to see

[Candace]:

No, but

[Stew]:

Janice.

[Candace]:

they were genuinely

[Stew]:

That's it.

[Candace]:

nice too.

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Candace]:

Like

[Stew]:

they were

[Candace]:

they were

[Stew]:

great

[Candace]:

genuinely like excited for us to be there. Like it was like,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

it was, it was when they were like, oh, like you guys are like, here's your, and I was like, oh, okay. Like, hey y'all, how you doing?

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah.

[Candace]:

Nice

[Stew]:

that

[Candace]:

to

[Stew]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Candace]:

meet

[Stew]:

lit.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like,

[Candace]:

you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

so,

[Stew]:

That

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Stew]:

was

[Bricktown Toine]:

there

[Stew]:

great.

[Bricktown Toine]:

was

[Stew]:

A party.

[Bricktown Toine]:

many of them I had never met before. So

[Stew]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's like, you know, you standing up there and I told my, my immediate leadership team, like my peer leadership team at work, like, yeah, I got to stand in front of like 40 of my wife's family members and tell them I'm the person that knocked up their daughter and granddaughter and cousin and aunt and stuff. Cause cause that's what it was. We didn't have the wedding in that way. It was on zoom, six people

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

in person, three from my side, three from her side, including us. And you were the pastor. So it's like,

[Stew]:

Mm-hmm.

[Bricktown Toine]:

they really didn't get. We didn't get to introduce to them. I met many of them at her sister's wedding in 2019,

[Stew]:

Yeah, yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but it was just a brief thing. You're at a wedding. And the funny thing about them being super nice, and they are, my in-laws are very nice, and I feel very welcome. I feel like a part of that family as much as they are part of mine.

[Stew]:

What a blessing.

[Bricktown Toine]:

And some of those people who I had not met, but had like, they followed me on Instagram, or Liz has been talking about me, they were like, OK, well, look, you're really in the family now, so I got

[Stew]:

You

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Stew]:

say

[Bricktown Toine]:

cover

[Stew]:

I got out of here,

[Bricktown Toine]:

business

[Stew]:

foo?

[Bricktown Toine]:

propositions. They were like, wait, hold up, hold

[Stew]:

He's

[Bricktown Toine]:

up,

[Stew]:

my,

[Bricktown Toine]:

hold up.

[Stew]:

he's

[Bricktown Toine]:

And

[Stew]:

my

[Bricktown Toine]:

it's

[Stew]:

prospectus.

[Bricktown Toine]:

like, look. One cousin sat down and said, hey, he said something. And we were talking, he was like, no, I need some guidance. I need some advice. And I was just like, what are we talking about here? So I got a couple of business deals on the table from the family

[Stew]:

There you go.

[Bricktown Toine]:

after the baby shower. I was like, look, you one of us now, let's talk. Let's make this partnership real.

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

So

[Stew]:

right. I want to say a

[Bricktown Toine]:

I

[Stew]:

beautiful

[Bricktown Toine]:

had a good

[Stew]:

moment

[Bricktown Toine]:

time.

[Stew]:

though, before I forget, is when you explain the power in her name, which I think was, I mean, for us, we know you're just a super thoughtful dude, so everything connects and you also have just like this way to listen to the world that I think a lot of people don't necessarily have. And just to hear, you know, the level of thought that you put, you both put into you know, her name, I think was just, it was touching.

[Bricktown Toine]:

It wasn't

[Stew]:

So

[Bricktown Toine]:

both. It

[Stew]:

I,

[Bricktown Toine]:

was all me.

[Candace]:

Yeah.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'm not giving

[Stew]:

I appreciated

[Bricktown Toine]:

Liz any of

[Stew]:

that.

[Bricktown Toine]:

that credit. That's all me. She didn't even like the name at first

[Stew]:

Fair enough, but

[Bricktown Toine]:

I'm getting full

[Stew]:

I love

[Bricktown Toine]:

naming

[Stew]:

that.

[Bricktown Toine]:

rights on that seed. Liz is growing her but that was my name Anime Give me my give me the name That's how I felt. Um, and thank you for that Stuart. Um, I'm not gonna give the information on her name here Y'all go check out my

[Stew]:

That's

[Bricktown Toine]:

instagram

[Stew]:

why I didn't

[Bricktown Toine]:

if you

[Stew]:

say

[Bricktown Toine]:

want to find

[Stew]:

it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

it, uh,

[Stew]:

Yep.

[Bricktown Toine]:

but to that level of intentionality Candice I was intentional and thoughtful with the outro song that we have for you. So Stuart, you wanna play us out? Thank you for being our first guest in season two.

[Candace]:

Thanks guys

[Bricktown Toine]:

We know you love this jam, jamming

[Candace]:

You

[Bricktown Toine]:

Candice.

[Candace]:

know it's my favorite song.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I know, honestly, we gotta give

[Stew]:

Thank you.

[Bricktown Toine]:

funky for Jamaica.

[Candace]:

It's my

[Bricktown Toine]:

Why

[Candace]:

favorite

[Bricktown Toine]:

is this your favorite

[Candace]:

song.

[Bricktown Toine]:

song?

[Candace]:

You know what, I've tried to think about that and I think it's just, it makes me think about like a family reunion. Like

[Stew]:

Yes.

[Candace]:

being at a family picnic, family reunion, whatever. And y'all know how important like family is to me. And it's just like, I think the song just like, it's not about just being at a reunion. It's when you hear those trumpets, everyone's like, oh,

[Stew]:

Hahaha

[Candace]:

and then you like, you about to jam, like you about to

[Bricktown Toine]:

You

[Candace]:

get

[Bricktown Toine]:

definitely

[Candace]:

into it.

[Bricktown Toine]:

be like, oh,

[Stew]:

Yeah,

[Bricktown Toine]:

she

[Stew]:

go

[Bricktown Toine]:

will

[Stew]:

ahead

[Bricktown Toine]:

run

[Stew]:

and

[Bricktown Toine]:

to

[Stew]:

stretch

[Bricktown Toine]:

the nearest

[Stew]:

there,

[Bricktown Toine]:

dance

[Stew]:

I know you can

[Bricktown Toine]:

floor

[Stew]:

just cross

[Bricktown Toine]:

clear

[Stew]:

here.

[Bricktown Toine]:

out space

[Candace]:

Ain't no stretching. You don't need no stretching. You just go you just start grooving. So I

[Bricktown Toine]:

Fucking

[Candace]:

think that's why

[Bricktown Toine]:

for

[Candace]:

it's just

[Bricktown Toine]:

Jamaica

[Candace]:

it's just joyful It's just joyful.

[Stew]:

Well,

[Candace]:

So

[Stew]:

you got to make sure your

[Candace]:

that's

[Bricktown Toine]:

and

[Stew]:

grandma

[Bricktown Toine]:

I mean

[Candace]:

my favorite

[Stew]:

didn't get you that back rub. There

[Candace]:

Yeah, I do

[Bricktown Toine]:

And I'm

[Candace]:

I

[Bricktown Toine]:

Jamaican

[Candace]:

need

[Bricktown Toine]:

so it's so many connections right here

[Stew]:

you

[Bricktown Toine]:

look

[Stew]:

go.

[Bricktown Toine]:

we funky for Jamaica We didn't explain why I was called Detroit the musical will explain post content. I hate musicals though y'all So that's

[Stew]:

Yes,

[Bricktown Toine]:

the long and short of

[Stew]:

which

[Bricktown Toine]:

it,

[Stew]:

is something

[Bricktown Toine]:

but I

[Stew]:

that

[Bricktown Toine]:

love

[Stew]:

I learned

[Bricktown Toine]:

Detroit

[Stew]:

last week.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yeah, love

[Candace]:

Thank

[Bricktown Toine]:

Detroit

[Candace]:

[Bricktown Toine]:

[Candace]:

for visiting my city. I'm glad

[Stew]:

We'll

[Candace]:

that

[Stew]:

be back.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Thank

[Candace]:

[Bricktown Toine]:

[Candace]:

[Bricktown Toine]:

[Candace]:

[Bricktown Toine]:

[Candace]:

glad we were there and I can't wait for you guys to come back.

[Bricktown Toine]:

Yo, we still recording right now?

[Stew]:

Oh, yes.

[Bricktown Toine]:

I never know, I'm like I can't
