Mhmm. Kind of a thing. We all recently watched this movie and like we always do, we're gonna rate it, rate it again, and give it a final rating after we talk about it for a bit. After we give a chit chat. But first, David, I would love you to tell our two listeners, what you, what you do.

Yeah. It's interesting because I don't have you had many guests that you don't know personally, like, in that I Like, we literally just met ten minutes ago. Yeah. It's true. I mean, I think Paul has brought folks that I haven't known, and I've brought folks that Oh, okay.

This. You're the first person that I have found from Craigslist Casual Encounters. Yeah. That has just been my m for p. Mail Mills for podcast.

There's a there's a long list. Yeah. So, I'm a, video editor. So, an amateur podcaster. I've had two podcasts.

One was all about Disney parks, and then all of us hosts became disillusioned with the direction the parks is the parks were going. Was that under the Chapec? That, I guess, yeah. A lot of it had to do with some of the decisions that were made by transactions. I think yeah.

I think a lot of them had started with Iger, but I think we had done some solid episodes about the things we were really passionate about. And we're starting to run thin on things, and we always wanted to stay positive on that show. So it's called Remain Seated, Please. I think most of the content is evergreen. We talk about our top five favorite sounds in the park Oh, interesting.

And stuff like that. So, like, yeah. It it wasn't Can you can you give me your your number one? My number one, what one was when you enter the tiki room, there's these drums Oh, yeah. That happen during the last shot.

Should've been. That's one of the sounds. And then my cohost, one of his favorite sounds is in New Orleans Square. You can hear, some voodoo chanting up into one of the windows. Oh.

In Oh, wow. I didn't know that. They're opening a new restaurant there, I guess, a new, like, Creole style. Giannis Palace. Yeah.

Yeah. After Princess and the Frog. My brother who was on the podcast and did Galaxy Quest, he's a, he's obsessed with Disneyland. So for his fortieth, we took him to we all went to Disneyland. That was last year.

It was a blast. I would love to listen to your podcast, and I'm sure he would too. What's the name of that podcast? That that's Remain Seated, Please. Okay.

And then right after that, I fell in love with the podcast. My favorite it's funny because I did write Movie Nerd in my little log line to you guys. I'm interested to see where you find me in my movie nerd dom. And and this is to say, my favorite band is Blink one eighty two. Okay.

Okay. And I fell in love with a podcast called Blink one fifty five. And it was so subversive and esoteric and off topic at all times that I was like, we had a very tragic sudden death in the family. And my way of coping was I wanna do that thing that I love from that podcast. And I was like, what do I do it about?

I'll do it about Jimmy World. And so me and a college buddy ended up doing that, and that was what I pivoted to after the Disney podcast. And we just wrapped that up this year. But that's also Evergreen in that we covered every song, song by song ever recorded by the band. So every episode you went to by each song?

Each song. Yep. Wow. And, and then as we started wrapping up albums, we planned to do retrospectives, and we probably will. They're on the precipice of releasing some new music probably next year, so that'll all kinda come out.

So the podcast that podcast is mostly on hiatus just because we ran out of songs. So So, like, you're you're in the middle of the ride, but everything's it's gonna be just fine. It'll be alright. Okay. Cool.

I totally grew up listening to Blink one eighty two Jimmy World. Yeah. You know, Green Day and so many others. Yeah. So much to this.

So I went to a concert at the Tacoma Dome Oh, yes. Called the Pop Disaster Channel. Right. With Green Day, was Jimmy World on that show? Yes.

Oh, perfect. Yeah. Good. Jimmy Heat World, Blink one eighty two, and Green Day. And they and they brought Travis Barker out over the crowd on this huge, like, hydraulic platform stage thing.

It was amazing. Oddly enough, this episode brought to you by the Tacoma Dome. Oh my gosh. What time? I know.

Right? So It's actually owned by Globex Corporation. It's a subsidiary, chair holder. That makes sense. Owned by Globex Corporation.

Because they've been in construction for, thirty years. At least off and on because that Yeah. Dome apparently is very hard to maintain. Probably one of the beautiful things that you drove by while you were on your visit to the Northwest. Maybe.

Oh, you definitely drove by it. If you drove it to the Northwest. It's one of the worst. Oh, it's in Tacoma. Yeah.

For sure. I went by it. Yeah. The Tacoma Roma. It's literally one of the worst stretches of freeway you will ever sit on for a good forty five minutes.

You'll recall at Exit 132, there's a huge sign for a hardware store that says Tacoma And my Incredible. I thought he was gonna make a joke, but he No. My grandmother was in a legal battle with them for almost ten years over who was the original Tacoma screw. Okay. There's the You were a Blink one eighty two fan.

I knew it was gonna happen. I was just waiting. Mark Hoppus just today posted on Instagram. He's they're in The UK and they're about to start their leg of the tour there. And it was like Swallows Court or something.

He's like, I found your mom I found where your mom lives. I was like, okay. Oh, shoot. I'll never grow up. I will always take off my pants and jacket.

Okay? Yeah. I'll stay a while. Can you not do it here? Lots of people don't get that.

Lots of people don't understand that. Or or they're always like, oh my god. I just got that last week. I didn't get it the first time I read it. And my dad's like, what's wrong?

And I was like, Blink just announced the name of their new record. And he was like, what is it? And I said, take off your pants and jacket, and he starts laughing. And then I was like, what? Oh, I get it.

I love that. On that note and Hank Scorpio and Albert Brooks Uh-huh. I had to rewatch the Hank Scorpio episode of The Simpsons today. Wait. Hold on.

Are we gonna we gonna transition into what are we watching? I don't know. Are we ready to do that? I don't know. Know.

No. I'm gonna cut the song in before so I can get away with not swearing at him. Yeah. No problem. But I watched the Hank Scorpio thing and, there's a Homer's like, hey, Hank.

You got any sugar? And Hank digs around, and he gives in his pockets and gives Homer some sugar. And then and then they take back in his pockets and says, you want any cream? And Homer goes, no. And my dad lost his shit, and my dad did not like the Simpsons.

But It was stuff like that that I was like, why is he laughing so hard that kept me watching it and forcing it on the TV in the house? So I did watch that, and also I had to be certain, because I've been saying it for over ten years now, and I I haven't seen it for over ten years. And I'm so happy to report that of all the movies Uh-huh. That have ever movie Uh-huh. Amadeus is the most.

I gotta I gotta remove that. It's the movie. I gotta I gotta remove that. I don't think I've seen it since since high school. It's not my favorite movie, but it is the movie.

Yeah. One thing, do you guys Are you guys aware of the movies brand hats? I I don't think they make them anymore, but it just said movies on it. And then they had one that said documentaries. Oh, I have And then somebody had an idea to make how do you how do you top the movies at?

And they just put movies movies on it. And now at work, everything is ranked by if it's a movies move or if it's a movies movies move. Oh. And so So, like, that's the level of Where would you put Amadeus? Is that a movies movie or is that a movies movies movie?

That's that's movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies movies. I mean it's fucking funny. They said it couldn't be done. Fucking hour long. And Amadeus pulled it off.

Good lord. I it's. Gotta revisit it. It's it. I remember loving it, but you watch it in high school over the course of, like, three drama classes.

Right? You know, because you don't see it all in one sitting. We watched Escape from So Bivore with Rutger Hauer. That was it. In drama class in high school?

No. And Gory. And I was like, man, that was great. We definitely watched Gory. We definitely watched Lean On Me.

Oh, no. But that is a good movie. Yeah. We watched, oh, what? Blood In Blood Out and Oh, no shit.

Mississippi Burning. Yeah. Oh, good movie. Good Batman. Yeah.

We watched the Robert Redford Great Gatsby. We watched the Seawolf with Charles Bronson and Christopher Reeve. Oh. In eighth grade, did you watch Watership Down? Yes.

Oh. Yes. We watched The Bachelor of Romeo and Juliet. We watched Oh, yeah. Of course you did.

Once One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Yeah. We watched Kenneth Branagh Hamlet. These were the thing these are the things you think of when you see the TV strapped down to the room with the car. Does every does every It's a smart board or something?

I don't know. My kid's, seven and three, and they both have smart boards in their classrooms. Is it just a TV? Basically. Yeah.

Oh, it's just a giant But there's no there's no, endorphin hit when you walk in the class to see it because it's just always there. It's always there. The rental that they had to roll out of the the IT Room Yeah. With the VHS It had the barcode sticker on the side for the equipment room to, like, scan it out. Yeah.

You'd see a movie case sitting on top of it or whatnot when you walk into it. When I In my advisory in high school Yes. Escape from Sogelbor again. I used to bring because we got a VHS DVD, and I used to bring in movies because I worked at Hollywood Video. And I was the cool kid that brought in movies so you could watch an advisory.

And then I just kinda started to move into the advisory room, so I brought, like, my coffee percolator. In high school? Yes. This was my senior year, and finally I'm too much. Finally, my, the teacher was like, you have to stop leaving stuff here.

So I was like leaving mugs, coffee mugs. The advisor didn't realize that they were in a relationship with you at that point. Yeah. No. Moving your stuff in.

I just wanted to be that cool, weird dude. Of course. You just wanted to be of service and be considered kinda cool. Like, I mean, what more does a senior in in high school want with cache with the adults? What are you watching now, Ben?

Well, I I'm in the midst of watching season three of Only Murders in the Building. Me too, actually. Yes. Which I'm which I love. And I also went to see a stage reading of a play called The Bed Trick written by our friend Keiko Green.

Oh, excellent. And? It was fantastic. No doubt. It was it's she's in the middle of workshop.

She just workshopped it. This is the first, like, stage reading it's had. She literally wrote this play in May and June and it's already up on its own. Wow. Yeah.

That's amazing. They did the reading. Oh, shit. The Chance Theater, which is Yeah. I know the Chance.

Yeah. I know. My friend Masaka was the TV there. Oh, nice. Yeah.

Yeah. Oh, rad. Yeah. My wife, Jess, has also worked there. And it's a sort of like a sort of a contemporary glance or, I guess, like, subversion look at the thing called the bed trick, which is done a lot in Shakespeare, which is one person says they're gonna have sex with this person and then they switch with someone else and that person ends up having sex with them.

Mhmm. And it's done to hijinks and romance in most, like, Shakespearean things or, satires or spoofs or and this is sort of looking at it like, are you sure? You know what I mean? What did they do to us? And it's it's it's very good.

And Keiko is and just Oh, that's tight. Yeah. She she did, an episode with us. She did, well, actually, technically, she did two. But one of her episodes got eaten by the tech gremlins.

As it yeah. As it's want to do. Which was adaptation. Mhmm. And it was a great episode.

She went with a Charlie choice and a Donald choice. Yeah. So the second choice was Earth Girls are Easy. Sick. That's right.

And she so fun. Yeah. So that's what I did. I got to see Keiko. I think that's a more subversive of the two titles.

Like, adapt like, film nerd circles. Like, everyone's, like, kinda like, oh, yeah. I know that one. But, like, Earth Girls are Easy. I think that could go over a lot of people's radar.

So yeah. Sure. And adaptation was amazing. Of course it was. Watch.

I hadn't watched it for a really long time. And it's it's it's a movie movie movie movie movie movie. It's not quite Amadeus, but it's movie. It's mini movies stacked on movies. It's a lot Literally.

It's a lot of movies. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's very good.

David, what have you been watching? Alright. You guys might not have heard of it, but I only just saw it for the first time. It's from the nineties. It's called Good Will Hunting.

And man, was it really good. Oh, wow. I'd never seen it before. It's great. You hadn't you hadn't seen it before.

I'd never seen it before. Oh, wow. Yeah. David, it's not your fault. Are you fucking with me right She's like, it's kinda what they're known for.

And I was like, no. I get that. They sort of will put them on the map. That's how they got that Oscar thing. Yeah.

Yeah. Well and I think it's Gus Van Sant's best movie. I was on I have to revisit some of his filmography, but it's probably my favorite that I Yeah. That I could pull off the top of my head. I remember liking Elephant, but I only saw it the one time.

Yeah. Elephant is intelligent. Elephant's good. I what was the movie he did with with River Phoenix and Oh, that would be Private Idaho? Yeah.

I have not I hadn't seen it. Seen that. Which is Hamlet. Yeah. Right.

But I've never seen the movie and apparently it's amazing. Apparently it's one of those movies has anyone seen The River's Edge with Keanu and a couple other folks? I have not. But it that's one of those movies that you watch where you're like, oh, yeah, Keanu can act. There's a reason he's where he's at aside from being a rat.

I love Keanu Reeves. Like, I only watched Point Break for the first time, like, three years ago, and I was like, holy shit. I just shot out of my seat just now. What the fuck? That movie's so good.

That is a that masterpiece. And then my dad tells me, he said, I built three lawnmowers for that movie. My dad built the lawnmowers for that movie. Great? My dad built those.

That is cool. There's three lawnmowers. There's the one with a foam blade that the art department made when Keanu puts his head toward it. There's the one that's running, and then there's the one that gets shot, the three lawnmowers. Paul Paul's in pig shit right now.

That that is one of the best examples of tension building through audio and mobile. I've seen it several times, but I would like to rewatch it. It's not available in four k. No shit. I check every couple weeks for a four k disc.

Really? Wow. That's so interesting. It's I think that movie is brilliant. It's such a great experience.

Collection yet? No. I don't believe so. It should it is such a brilliant It's so good. And, like, Anthony Kiedis shows up randomly in it?

Yeah. It's so good. A couple of the peppers in it? Yeah. Yep.

Weird. But it's such a brilliant, What year was it made? Ninety two or '3. Yeah. What year did he die?

Anthony Kiedis? Not yet. He has to be c. He has to be c. He has to be c.

Patrick Swayze passed. Oh, Patrick Swayze was February. Several years ago. Why did I think Anthony Kiedis died? I don't know.

I'm pretty sure he shoots himself in the foot in that movie though. Because that movie is one of the best examinations of fragile masculinity and what is this a father son relationship? Is this a brotherly relationship? Is this a And then These guys are in love with each other. Natural transition into hot fuzz.

Yeah. I was gonna say, and Gary Busey. I like it. I put honey on it. I like to kiss it on the So that's good.

And then I'm also making my way through Ted Lasso, which I was really I love Jason Sudeikis. Yeah. But I I was I don't know if I'm, like, too cynical for the show, but I hated the first half of the first season. I was like, this show sucks. Oh.

And everybody loved it. And now I'm in the third season, and I'm, like, bawling my eyes out and laughing. I think I I I also love the show, and I think the first season's my favorite of that series. Mhmm. And I think one of the big reasons that it got so much love is because it came out in the middle of COVID.

Yeah. And people were fucking depressed. Yeah. It was so connective. I'm a huge Scrubs fan, so I was also watching it from that point of view because I love Bill Lawrence?

The Bill Lawrence and that and his sensibilities. And I just I don't know if I just wasn't getting it or it wasn't hitting for me. I felt weird about it. I think it really hits as it as it goes at the end of that season, I feel. If I recall, not a lot of people loved season three, but I'm really enjoying it.

But maybe because I'm able to sit with it all at once and having lumped it all together or something. I mean, the first season is the plot of Major League. Yeah. Yeah. That yeah.

I noted that. Is Jamie Tart, Charlie Sheen or He's one of Or Corbin Barenson, something like like that. But he does get resting on his laurels. But he does get the redemption of that that. And Jake Taylor is I feel I do have to say the guy who plays, Jamie has one of the best redemption arcs.

He's, yeah, I'm in the middle of that. I just finished the Amsterdam episode, and it's just a really great sweet yeah. Yeah. And and the and the relationship between him and, and, Roy? Roy Kent Yeah.

When his dad Yeah. Oh, that was kind of the beginning of it. It was Roy seeing how his dad treated him and all this stuff. I cried a lot watching that show. Yeah.

I'm a crier. I'm a crier. I lost Yeah. I lost Oh, me too, Tim. I'm a crier.

Yeah. I cry at commercials. Yeah, dude. I actually cried at the end of this movie that we're talking about. I remember I cried a lot the first time.

Oh, sorry. I did I didn't mean to step on you. I cried the first time I finished The Notebook, and now if I start The Notebook, I'm already crying. That's me with that's me with Coco. Oh, yeah.

Yeah. Coco makes me cry. That's me with Freddy's The Final Nightmare. Yeah. Because I feel like he's they're not gonna bring him back, but then they brought him back.

Like, you I never saw it coming. Paul, do you know what crying means? Crying crying Ryan Gosling? Tell me I'm cunuff. Tell me now.

You Tell me I'm cunuff. Well, okay. So the movie we're talking about, Defending Your Life, that Which you cried at the end of, you said. I did. Yeah.

Yeah. Please. See this previously? Well, let's talk to David and see his history. Please.

Yeah. Okay. Oh, we're sure I'm fighting for control dad my dad's always been kind of a cinephile. And all of the movies that ran through my brain I actually talked to him yesterday. I was like, I'm doing this.

Here's the parameters. What movie do you think I chose? And he was like, Phantom of the Paradise. I was like, fuck. I should have chosen Phantom of the Paradise.

The Depoamal. Because that's what I grew up on. Like, those were the types of movies, like the the ones that my parents like. My dad's always been kind of a cinephile a little bit. Like, really, like, my my gut was this film because I feel like a lot of people don't know it.

Mhmm. And then I was also on the cusp of choosing My Blue Heaven, which I think is another movie that I'd Steve Martin and Rick Moran. Steve Martin and Rick Moran is buddy movie and another that I think a lot lot of people don't know. But I think My Blue Heaven for sure I saw in the theater with my dad and I was probably six or whatever. And I believe I saw this in the theater with my dad.

And it had enough it was like, I know we owned it on VHS, like, my entire life. So it must have been the minute it came out. I think it was October of ninety one that it came out on VHS. Like, we had it and we just watched it. It was just like a comfort movie.

And as I've as I've gotten older, it's one that I understand more and more I understood more and more the jokes. Now I think I I watched it two nights ago. And I was like, no. There's nothing I missed. Like, there's not any I was interested to see if there were any new jokes that I maybe had missed, but there weren't.

But as I grew older, a lot of jokes that went over my head as a kid, I started to understand and made a lot more sense and were funnier. And I guess lastly, they'll whenever somebody asks if I'm religious, I'm like, not really, but have you seen depending your life? Because, like, I think most of my thought on religion is based on this is, like, the most accurate depiction that I can imagine and hope that that the afterlife might be. So empathize with I don't wanna give too much away, but I empathize with that. When you first saw this movie when you were a kid Yeah.

Out of five, what would you have given it? As a kid, yeah. That's interesting. It was something I watched with my dad, and I did I mean, Back to the Future was five. Right?

So Back to the Future is five, I would say three. Like, it was like a comfort movie. I wasn't mad about my dad putting on. Yeah. And I always thought it was funny when Albert Brooks was at the Past Life Pavilion and said, I'm dinner.

Yes. That was always funny to me. I like that out a few times Yeah. Through this movie. And those are the jokes that hit with me as a kid, that made sense with me as a kid.

So I I think it was a solid three, a back to the future is a five when I'm a kid. Sure. I think this was a a solid three. It's a good barometer. Three pies.

Okay. That's an excellent choice. Three pies. Well, Paul, you Excellent choice, sir. You already asked me, so I'm not gonna counter.

And I will I will say my experience. Hey. Because you want power. Yeah. I want I want control.

He wants control. So it's funny, when Paul sent me this the name of this movie, my initial thought was never fucking heard of that. And I looked it up and I read the synopsis and I sent it to my wife and she was like, never heard of it. Like, what the fuck is this? So yeah.

I mean, so I so I went into watching it. I actually watched it today. In reading the synopsis, I was like, I feel like my brother has had to have seen this. So I texted my brother and he was like, I love that movie. I used to rent that movie all the time from Blockbuster and watch it in mom's basement.

From you. All the time. And I was like, wait a minute. How did I never watch this before? I didn't work at Blockbuster.

I was gonna say, the problem was he was a Hollywood video and they didn't carry it. Don't you fucking put me in that. I had a purple shirt. Don't put me in that blue and yellow shirt. I was in a purple shirt.

I looked at the grimace, and I killed people in the first place. Like mister t. My first couple three. My first couple days at Hollywood was still the bow ties. Oh, shit.

Oh, wow. It was still, like, the tuxedo bow ties. And they switched to the purple shirts. So my brother went through all the time and watched all the time and I was like, how did I never watch this with you? And he was like, I have no idea.

And then he started to say, like, I didn't know you watched Batman Returns all the time because he listened to our Batman Returns episode. And we're like, wait, do we even know each other? You guys got in the fight? Yeah. I gotta listen to the Batman returns episode.

I feel like that was the one that everyone watched all the time. I watched it all the time when I was a kid. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if we're the same age or not, but, like, it was just on all the time at most people.

I'm 69. I'm Nice. That's weird. I'm I'm 37. Okay.

Yeah. I'm a year older than you, so Yeah. Yeah. I'm 20 I'm 23. No.

He's not. Nobody likes it. He lies about his age. All that to say, this was, for me, the first time I ever watched it and I didn't really have a history with it. Okay.

But my brother did. And? My brother wrote a book called What Death Taught Terrence. His book is greatly inspired by this movie. Oh, no.

Woah. Because it's about a man named Terrence who dies and he has to go on a retrospective of his life. Yeah. So he was was, like, I don't know if I was subconsciously taking from this movie, but he definitely was inspired by it. So, yeah, that's that's that's my experience.

It's very it's it it there's definitely I feel like this was was definitely inspired by It had to have been. Yeah. Yeah. But, yeah, night it's a it's an old movie.

I think it's in Technicolor. It's even there's even a crash that causes it. That's interesting. Yeah. Is he listening to Barbra Streisand?

Life's candy and the sun symbol of the bottom. Somebody had to do it. You know that scene in, missus Doubtfire? Harvey Fierstein had to teach Robin Williams the words to that part because he didn't know him. Harvey Fierstein basically told Robin Williams, I'm gonna be in your movie.

Your next movie, I'm gonna be in. He was like, well, Nathan Lane's gonna play that part. He's like, no, he's not. I'm gonna do it. So he ended up doing birdcage with Nathan Lane because Harvey Fierstein did, and and that all came because Robin Williams would do Harvey Fierstein during his stand up routine as just a joke.

It's like, you know, you're a standard gay guy, and he just chose Harvey Fierstein's voice. Because he has to be And Harvey Fierstein loved it so much. He was like, you gotta have me in your next picture. So anyway. I know that he got a lot of hate mail after Weinstein came under fire, which is such a such a bummer.

Okay. The movie we watched, Defending Your Life. It was a Geffen Company release, 1991. Parental guidance was suggested on this. This is an hour and fifty one minutes.

How many is that a hundred and eleven minutes? Are you Hour and fifty one? Are you how many I think it is a hundred and eleven minutes. Okay. The comedy rule of threes.

I don't know. David mentioned it. He respects it. Budget on this movie. It's all over as we've kinda talked about a little, like, some of the info.

So what I saw in an interview with Roger Ebert that it was about $20,000,000. Okay. Does that make sense to everybody? Or did anybody see anything different? I didn't.

No. I know it made 16,000,000 opening weekend. Right. Or, woah. That would have been very big opening weekend.

Yeah. I mean, for for a picture of this I think that was final gross. Oh, that was final gross? Oops. Yeah.

You're fine. Let's say 20,000,000. Yeah. That is, today, 44,888,000.000. Okay.

Still a small small budget film. Yeah. Especially if you're gonna get Meryl Streep. His his note was you can't do $3,000,000 movies forever. And essentially, the amount of money this movie lost was the amount that modern romance cost, like about $3,000,000.

So opening weekend, 04/05/1991 was the wide release. It made $3,300,000. There you go. 7.4 adjusted. Final gross in North America was 16.4.

Final for the adjusted there, 36.8. The other releases this weekend, The Marrying Man starring who knows and couldn't couldn't care to find out. Are you listing this in any particular order? Was Was that number one that weekend? Nope.

That was just the other wide release. Another wide release that weekend. In this weekend's top five, Ben's favorite Ninja Turtles movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles two The Secret of the Ooze. Four stars on That's incorrect. Letterboxed.

I feel like I watched that a lot on, like, HBO or Cinemax a lot when I was a kid. Only thing I remember from that is at the end when the guy gets out of his minivan and he shoots the Oh, yeah. The the traffic signal Yeah. Yeah. And then he drives away.

I remember none of it other than the video cover, and I was trying to watch different I think I added it to Flex, but I couldn't find as anybody seeding it on the torrent, so I had to download it from YouTube. It's like me. I I occasionally will be like, you know, there is still that full version of Stone Cold starring Brian Bosworth on YouTube. I'm gonna click that on full comfort food. Somebody's like, for a movie about the afterlife, it was pretty it was shot pretty shitty. And I was like, and I think that was the point. I think the point was to make it look mundane.

She plays Julia. Carrying the Dark, Ricky and the Flash, The Devil Wears Prada, as well as Adaptation. Oh. Is she been nominated the most for every for I feel like it always comes up. Whether it's true or not, I don't know.

But I I wouldn't be surprised. Yeah. Because she got nominated for Ricky and the Flash. I was like, really? Yeah.

I mean, it is a Jonathan Demme flick and all, but it's like I've never been inspired to watch it. Speaking of Only Murders, she's in season three. That's right. Exactly. She's in season three.

Rip Torn. Poor Rho, baby. Rip Torn, which is just the best name. So good. Well, the second best name What's the first name?

So, like, I mean, yeah. It's I found myself watching it this last time. I was like, is this, like, the perfect movie? Woah. You think it's Amadeus?

Yeah. I know. That that's the thing. It's like it's almost like, I I liken it to, like I would never compare I love sushi from Kabuki. It's a chain sushi restaurant, at least here in LA.

I'm sure you guys are familiar. Everything's covered in Neal sauce and and fried. It's great. It's awesome. But I would never compare that to Sugarfish.

They're just two different things. Mhmm. Sure. I almost wouldn't compare Defending Your Life to something like Amadeus. But, like No.

Watching it from, like, strong, creative story, capable filmmaking and storytelling, like, there are a couple questions left unanswered, and I am interested drop my score based off the conversation that we're gonna have because I'm open to it. And I was reading some of the negative Yeah. That's why you're here. Letterbox. I was I was reading some of the negative letterbox reviews, and I was like, okay.

Yeah. I guess that makes sense. But I feel like a lot of things I appreciate when things get set up and pay off. Sure. And things like we'll talk about when Bob doesn't show up one day.

A lot of people had a problem with that. Like, why doesn't he show up and he's just back? But I think it's to pay off the joke when he says, you wouldn't understand, and he says, try me. I was lost in the inner circle of thought. I don't understand.

Like that type of thing. Like, I think that was worth him not showing up one day, but also so many other things that for somebody who's as neurotic as Daniel is in this movie, something like that happening to him and getting the the defender that he gets in his stead is just, like, bonkers. Like I I think the last thing he needs. They wanna see him handle that without fear. Like, take the spear and run forward.

That's a really creative Thank you. But, like, what would you rate it now? You're saying five then. Yeah. I'm still at a five.

Yeah. I gotta say, as we're starting this movie Let's start it. Click. I I gotta say the first thing that I am into that I like, these people that we meet, these people that he works with This boardroom that he's in. Cars from people that like, none of them have names.

We don't need this information. Like, the the movie is very laissez faire about, like, we're gonna get to the point where this guy's, like, buying himself a fun little zippy car to drive for himself for his birthday and kill him. Yeah. I also appreciated, and I kinda saw it coming, but I appreciated the setup of the world on Earth and the world and then the afterlife world. There's sort of an analogous that that's, like, oh, it's it's corporate America, you know, that we're it's a natural transition from Diamond does.

It's just And we never really get into what it is that he does. He at at one point, I think we get that he worked for a marketing agency. Advertising executive. He's been there for several years. Several years.

Mhmm. He's like He took $49,000 to take the job and he shouldn't have. He's like Tim Allen in the Santa Claus. Yes. Correct.

Yeah. Which I think the writer or editor of this movie somebody that was involved with this movie was involved with the Santa Claus franchise. Surprise me at all. Oh, man. It's wild hogs.

The the the amount of movies that started with, like, white dudes at corporate parties in the nineties That's right. Doing cocaine with Tim Allen. Or from Tim Allen. A weenie whistle. That was a good Judge Ryan win.

That was good. Yeah. I can't wait for Beverly Hills Cup four. I can't wait. Okay.

So my wife works in Beverly Hills, and we saw oh, I never got to see them filming. I I saw the cars, and I saw everything set up, and I saw them doing all this stuff. But I it just made me so excited. Is it set current day? It it seems like it.

Nothing was dressed up in any way. Although there were older vehicles. I won't give anything away, but there were older vehicles, picture vehicles. I don't know. I'm excited.

Or maybe somebody's still driving an old vehicle. But what was funny was while they were doing that, Tim Allen walks in to my wife's store, and she's like, I think Tim Allen's in the movie. No. Turns out he's really annoyed because he can't find parking because he's just trying to make an exchange for his wife. I was so excited.

I was just going to do some dude stuff. Just errands and shit. Yeah. He's just running errands. He can't find anywhere to park.

So what you had said, David, about things being paid off in the movie Mhmm. My fir my very first thought when we're in purgatory, wherever we are Judgment City, but we don't know yet. Conceptualized city. That is essentially like a waiting area to figure out if you are going to end up working there So they established or going back to Yeah. Bob Diamond establishes it's it's not like our traditional, what we believe as purgatory being the, like, place where they weigh your life and decide if you're going to heaven or hell.

It's like a place where they decide if you are kinda staying in this area and being part of the afterlife It's hard to say. Or getting the Buddhist sort of Did you figure out the universal question to some degree? Have you have you advanced enough? No. And I think that I think that's a valid point because, Bob Diamond has been had been to Earth six times.

Daniel's approaching 20. Right. And at the end of the movie, I I hopefully, it doesn't spoilers don't matter. No. This came out, like, thirty fucking years ago.

You're you're okay. Merrill Merrill and he go off in a tunnel that's to the right. It they're not they're leaving judgment city. To me to me, it seemed like they're going to, heaven like afterlife. Yeah.

Maybe. Yeah. He says move on to the next plane of existence. I guess for Bob, it was to work in Judgment City. But A citizen of the universe.

Mhmm. That's the way that they've But also as he says, if you use 5% of your brain, you don't wanna be on Earth. Like, perhaps Bob's not actually in Judgment City. Part of his Oh, woah. Existential existence in that right tunnel down the way allows him to function in that role there, but also be wherever he is.

And I I do I do enjoy an open ended question like that. I like David Lynch, so, you know? Sure. Sure. Me too.

Too. Well, the them all being wheeled in, like, by these orderlies I love those street ratchet. They die. My very first thought is, where are the where are the where are the dead kids? Why aren't there dead kids here?

And then it's explained later, but that is my very fur I'm thinking, like, oh, it's mostly old people. Mhmm. But there should be some kids in there because I was fucking scared of them. Too, though. I just love the same thing.

And then the Disneyland transports. I'm like, oh, cool. Disneyland. Yeah. I was like, they remind me of the old Universal movies They are.

Studio shuttles. Yeah. They are. Oh, they are. I was looking for that.

Old Universal trams. Yes. That's amazing. Yeah. It's so random.

To our listener, this is the point where he has crashed into a bus, and now he is dead. I will say I drive my car listening to music the exact same way Daniel Miller does. With compact discs? Right? That's the idea and that that he is taken to his hotel and he's he's got, like, a mid range hotel. It's like a Motel six. No. It's not that bad.

It's a If you guys are familiar with Walt Disney World hotels, this is like okay. The the so at Walt Disney World, they have gosh. I wish I knew the names of them, but they're tiers of hotels. Yeah. And this is, like, the all stars.

Cheaper one. This is, like, the all stars. Yeah. Because in Disneyland, it's the Paradise Pier, and that's where I stayed. Yeah.

But also, like, it's like I think some of those people are probably only on their first or second runs. That's a good point. Yeah. Most likely. I assume Their age doesn't mean anything in their grand scheme of things.

Yeah. Go ahead. When Rip Torn and Albert Brooks are having the conversation about charity, and he's like, I don't know how how how much do people give? I a lot of people give. Gotta give.

I had to think I I was thinking about, The Good Place. Yes. A lot of people mentioned that in the comments too. About the the show Afterlife. I don't know that one.

Which one is that? It's a Amazon Prime show with Robbie Amell about a, a digital cloud that is created so that rich people can upload their an AI version of themselves after they die, so they never Oh, wow. In this, it's like a it's Afterlife. So it's like it's like a heaven Oh. Situation where, like, rich people can can never die.

Anyway Sweet. Those are the two shows I thought of while watching this, program. I haven't seen, The Good Place, but a lot of people mention it. It's very good. It is good.

So it's not just a clever name? It's a very good show. And it as as Mike Schur didn't do with The Office, this one ends when the show ends. Nice. It's like a perfect amount of show.

Nice. In my opinion. Anyway, back to the program. Was the bad comedian the perfect amount of show? Did he get the perfect amount of show?

I like that he sees I'm just playing. He sees he can go he can go see bad comedy. And what's the other one? It's like a it's like a talk on the afterlife? No.

I think it's a whole It's the past Life pavilion where you can put your hand to a plate and you can see up to five past lives. But instead, like, yeah. They like, he's like, no. It's crazy that he can eat the whole thing. He can see the bad comedian.

They can eat whatever they want. Yeah. He can eat as much as they want. He's just kidding though. I'm just kidding.

But that that's the thing here. There's no cholesterol. There's no No. And this is he meets Meryl a good amount into the movie. Well, I thought about that because I did take in some things like how long they're there.

They're only there for five days, four of which are your trial. Yeah. And he does meet her the first night. Right. Because he meets her at the comedy, store.

Right. Yeah. At the comedy store. Yeah. No.

They they definitely are hot and bothered pretty fast. But but But then she's, like, busy the second night because Sam is having a dinner party. Well, and I guess Is that her defendant? Uh-huh. Yeah.

Yeah. But it well, and it's, like, it's it's not necessarily explained, but does it need to be? I think she just told us what she was doing. Right. Right?

Yeah. He said, oh, are we gonna be in tomorrow? And she's like, oh, I can't. And she ends up leaving him a voice mail at his Yeah. Hotel, but yeah.

I I mean, it it helps build, like, the longing that I think they're supposed to have for each other. It made me, like short amount of time. Not frustrated, but it made me, like, antsy while I watched it this time because I I was more cognizant this time of how many days they were there. I was like, fuck, she's busy one of these four days that they're actively doing? It's not a lot of time.

Also, I do one of the things things I really appreciate about this movie is the world building. And you were mentioning, like, the whole idea of when Bob Diamond is not there that one day, and he says he was, what, lost in the He was lost in the inner circle of thought. I for for me, that was, like, more of of this world building. Same with, like, him eating seemingly horse shit. Yeah.

And reading numbers on a page. Yeah. It's like you wouldn't understand. Yeah. It's it's it's more of this sort of, like, oh, you know what I just thought of is the Pixar movie Soul.

Like, there Yeah. I did too. Very Soul. That's a good point. Yeah.

Many times. But, like, the world building of this afterlife that we cannot comp there are things in this that just go beyond the the our ability to comprehend. Mhmm. And so they just, like, pass through. We can't even see that.

And they even explain away. They say, we try to make judgment city as close to something as familiar to you, and we have comment boxes on the every corner if you wanna Yeah. Which reminded me of Good Place. And, like Yeah. So Soul was a thing that made me, and there was a leak of fluid on my face.

Soul was so good. Not enough people. That was a COVID movie. Right? Like, I feel like a lot of people missed it.

Christmas day twenty twenty one in the movie. So good. That is a good movie. Yeah. I revisit that all this.

By the way, they they mentioned they're talking about they're talking about the their butchers and their mailmen and knowing people's names. So apparently, that's part of what's important. But, he's like his friend Steve has, like, a meat slicer or whatever and is not a butcher. And it's like I'm immediately like, dude, your friend Steve is a murderer. Your friend Steve straight eats people.

It wait. So I may have missed that. Did was it was Steve his butcher for real? And I wonder if it's friend Steve from when he was a kid played by Ethan Embry. Oh, woah.

That's Is that That's where we're revisiting. We're going to look into it. That's where we're revisiting. But you're introducing Too much Illumina. You're introducing the concept where he is put into a room with a judge, a defendant, and, the Does anybody listening understand what this movie is about based off of how our conversation's been going from there?

Hopefully, they've watched it. That's a good point. But he gets they basically show him and everybody has a different amount of days, but they show him nine days in his life. And there are nine days that they're gonna use to determine whether or not he lived in fear, basically. And it's all it's all based on stuff that it's like, hey, remember that thing where you made fun of that girl for her jacket in third grade?

Fuck you. It did matter. You have a right to stay up till two in the morning. Worryed about that when you were 30. What I really, really, really liked about this movie is that it's not about whether or not he was good or bad.

It wasn't this, like, morality barometer of, like, did he did he choose the right path? Did he live in a in a in a, like, kinda like, good place where it's like, did he live in a place that was, like, always good? It was more about whether or not he lived in fear. And how much he learned. I think that's a good that's a really good metric as opposed to how most people probably live their life and religions are set up, sin versus Right.

Yeah. Not. And it's it's Fear? There's no love. But scarier than that.

Like It is. And it and it makes I feel like it speaks to everybody Yeah. Because I feel like everybody has fear. I don't know. As a Meisner actor, I feel like I'd nail this so quick.

Well, as a Stanislaus movie man myself. It'd be like, how do you feel? I'd be like, stupid. Smell it. Like a tree.

Yeah. I wanna die. The things, though, that they bring up that feel so trivial to us that do, like, sometimes keep us up at night as grown ass people that we don't think about really or don't that are deep in our subconscious let go of. Like, his dynamic with his dad and his parents or whatever in general, when he the thing with the paint where he wants to cover for the kid, and then he says the thing about the t the the dad's gonna take away the TV for the for him losing the paint and trying to cover. TV is everything.

It's terrible. As a latchkey kid, like, yeah, that's like straight fucking, like, don't take away the bottle. Yeah. No. I remember when I was grounded in high school and it was like two weeks without TV and I was like Please.

Because because You want me to do read? You guys never taught me to read. You just say read. I can't read. I said battle.

Yeah. He's listen he's looking at fifteen. A lot. A lot. And he goes, I'm gonna go to the bathroom.

You wanna go with me? And then her book's just like, no. Frank who's like, I invented all nude. Yeah. Yeah.

I coined that phrase for me. Totally all nude. For the club's nude. All nude. But when the sushi chefs say all that stuff, I I say to myself every time somebody gets up to go to the bathroom, like, ticcup is.

I do love that every time someone asks him how he does he has, he says nine. They're always saying, hey. Yikes. I'll give you nine pies. That was good.

Yeah. You didn't do six with nine pies. Yeah. And anytime anybody mentions pies, I was like, I'm gonna bring you nine pies. One for each day.

Yeah. It's so good. I do enjoy that. But the romance in this is really nice. I I was just thinking about that.

That I I actually thought, like, the chemistry between the two of them was, like, very very genuine. At at times, I found myself going, you two are the only people close in age in terms of appearance. Yeah. That This is a a relationship of convenience. The thing I liked was, like, from that from that standpoint, it's like, somebody had mentioned I think Soulmates maybe comes up in The good place.

Somebody had mentioned soulmates or something. Soulmates. Something gets of all times that they could have died in all this judgment city has to pass thousands and thousands of people or millions and millions of people through. It's in the Western That they met. US.

Right? Oh, right. That's right. Yeah. Yeah.

They're the Western US intake hub. Yeah. We know he's from LA. We don't know exactly where she's from. Yeah.

I don't think it's ever explained. We just know that she's a fucking idiot. She died pissed. Badass essentially. She died pissed was my favorite.

Yeah. That was really good. And Yeah. Actually, when they bring in the defender, the when they bring in Buck Henry, old Dick Lemon, we get the Lemon party with the new he Riptorn is gone for no reason that may maybe is not actually explained. If you could dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. He dodged to that courtroom. What?

Yeah. But I actually I actually read that as, like, we're going to throw something at you and see if you I never considered that, and I think that Like a wrench. That adds a level of genius and and forethought that I think is great. I mean, that's To me, it was Yeah. That that is a good test because they because we I mean, not to jump ahead, but we see the end is also a test.

This is where I started to feel like I was like, oh, they're gonna test him throughout. It's gonna essentially be like a trial by fire. That's part yeah. Like, that's part of the whole thing. Like, maybe he was on the fence.

Yeah. And how he was gonna take this ninth eighteenth to the nineteenth time through Judgment City was gonna be the determining factor. Well, I I I love that, also as like this Disneyland universal feel or everything, there are fucking lines even here to get into the pavilion. They're just like She detests, I feel like I'm in Disneyland. Yeah.

And like the, who are you? When When they look at their past lives and he goes, dinner. That what was she? She was like a knight? She's like, I'm Prince Valiant.

Were they so here's the question. When they're all looking at their past lives, they're like there's this, like, level of shock. Are they shocked by, like, the hologram, or are they just shocked? That's right. When Shirley MacLaine comes up, everybody starts losing their shit.

And I'm like I mean, it is. I gotta put yeah. That's true. And it's she's even credited as herself. I know.

Like, so so, like, was it was she's I'm too young to understand. Like, in 1991, would it have been incredible to see Shirley MacLaine? Dude, if so if two people were, like, standing next to each other and all of a sudden, like, the Michael Jackson hologram showed up, somebody would just, like, out of pure amazement would turn to the other person and just, like, snap their necks. They just had to, like What? Nick Swartzon is, like, show people from the thirties transformers and shut the fuck up.

I mean, they would all just, like, start killing each other and going insane. They wouldn't be able to handle it. What is this for? What did they do to us? Yeah.

So Yeah. The premise of this scene is, like, you stand in front of a booth, and I love it. You remember oh, I don't know what it was like in the Pacific Northwest, but for some reason, everything in LA at museums were all the walls were carpeted at museums. Like, you would sit on carpeted steps, and all the walls were carpeted. For all the kids.

Yeah. Sort of. But, like, so it feels very much like that. Everything is gray carpets, and you walk up to a to a booth, and it's basically put your hand to the plate. And then all of a sudden, Shirley MacLaine comes up and tells you about, like, what you're about to experience, and everybody loses their shit.

I mean, it does look okay for 91, but at times, like, this movie does look kind of, like, old to me. It looks almost like Sure. Yeah. Film stock. Yeah.

It has that, I always felt like shows on Fox looked That's specific. Weird as opposed to, like, NBC and CBS looked colorful. Fox always looked like it needed it was shot logged. Super? It was logged.

I wonder is the Italian restaurant that they shot in it looked like the restaurant they shot in for Brazil. Oh. It might be. It looks kinda like me, the tequila sunrise. I was trying I was trying to place it.

I so before they get to that dinner, though, when they get done with the pavilion and they kiss Yeah. She kisses him. Right? Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. Like, he came 20. I mean, she went 80. Think about later when she invites him.

Times? He came yeah. I mean, wait. No. I came.

You were a soft hard four. I was At that point. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

We're at, like, 4.00012 at that point. Yeah. Yeah. That's as far as I get out of laser. Just I have a thing.

But, yeah, I think I think she was more comfortable with driving that relationship forward than he ever was. Absolutely. Yeah. He he does this he does this thing with this kind of personality of this character in modern romance, in so many things. This is why it was so it's so refreshing where he's like Jacques on the Simpsons or the head of the EPA or Hank Scorpio.

Get the hell out of here. Or when he's in Drive, holy fuck shit. Stoked when I saw him in Drive because I I went into that movie not knowing he was in it, and I lost my shit when I saw him in it. He's incredible. Yeah.

But his but his character in this is kind of like a a watered down version of In Good Place, Chidi Aragonier Yeah. Where he's he he has this inability to really make a decision that is good for him. Yeah. Because Like, he can't he's really bad at, like, making a choice that's, like, ultimately what he wants. Mhmm.

Right? Because he's constantly trying to weigh whether or not it's the right choice. This was part of the premise of Modern Romance is that he couldn't commit to this incredible woman because it might not have been the right choice. That was part of the the idea of this movie to me is not only comforting because it is, like, muted and docile and chill. It's got a great score that just kind of, like, comes along that's really nice.

Oh, the score is really nice. The stakes never feel like, it's never life or death because he's going no matter what, he's still around. So you just kind of enjoy the ride to me Yeah. To whatever degree. Like, it's it's just a fun, mostly nimble.

At times, it drags. But Yeah. It's funny. I found myself checking my phone in what was probably the most poignant scene, which is when they're in her lobby, and she's down. And I was like, oh, shit.

I'm on my phone right now. Which which, like, he we see him do the snowmobile thing, which was all self preservation. And then we find out she's a hero who saved her family and her cat, and he still, like, can't have sex with you. Yeah. If I walked in and saw, like And her prosecutor was, like, I'm sorry.

I had to see that again. They really lay it on really thick that, like, how amazing she is. Yeah. And then, like, he has this motivation at the end where he's finally learned enough, grown enough, using 4.8% of his brain or whatever, where he's like, I can't let this slip through my fingers. Yeah.

Quick anecdote. I once went snowmobiling and went off a jump and jumped off the snowmobile and it went falling into a tree. And you didn't break your leg in two places like that. I did not. Okay.

Then you have to drag yourself in the clouds. It didn't break. It definitely it didn't break. I could still dig it out and ride it, but it was When you returned it, did the dudes, like, say anything? I didn't it was my friend's.

Oh, shit. Oh, woah. Yeah. He he had some property, in Chelan, and we used to take people snowmobiling. And I, I had never been snowmobiling before, and that was a that was a mistake.

You are not supposed to jump off the snowmobile as it's flying through the air. Wow. Interesting. I I can here's the thing is you weren't on it when it hit the tree, though. So That's true.

But chasing after it in, like, thigh deep snow was a hard thing to do. Yeah. Because you can't catch it. It's true. It's true.

Anyway They're squirrely. They're wily. You might break your leg. It's true. I another test of strength that that Albert Brooks gets is that dinner scene where the the attorney shows up.

And again, that is a test. She's eating Meryl Streep orders noodles Mhmm. And one's really long. And he's like, eat it, bite it, bite the noodle. And it's like, bro, calm.

I don't think he and if you finish those 13, you get 13 more. Broccoli with a bunch of cheese sauce. Oh, yeah. He's like, I'll have a little. Yeah.

The whole fucking But it is great. That's another scene where you just see how fearless Meryl's character is because she just walks up to the prosecutor and she's like, I just think he's wonderful. Yeah. And then the prosecutor's date starts hitting on her. Like, it's so uncomfortable.

I love, like, they really lay in on thick that it's like, hey, if Albert Brooks, like, doesn't it's it's one of those endings you can kinda clock, but it's really satisfying Yeah. To a degree. And, like, the nine pie thing and and him not wanting to fuck her because of his weird that's another thing I like about this movie. I like the idea of me passing and having some control over what happens next. Yeah.

Having some say. I like I really appreciate that this isn't like a dark sort of I I feel like most movies that have to do with purgatory, like, I don't know, Jacob's Ladder for instance, seem to be really, really dark. Yeah. And this movie The darkest it gets is he says, like, oh, some people go hundreds of times, but eventually they just throw you away. And Yeah.

They don't really go into what that means, but they just Or when or why. Yeah. Yeah. You just get deleted. Yeah.

But then, like, it's that's the thing It's like, I'm kinda like Albert Brooks in this movie. I'll eat all the macaroni and cheese I want. Who gives a shit? Yeah. You know, I'm still gonna do it normally and smoothly as I like to.

And I don't have to worry about how much cheese is in it. It doesn't block you up? Nope. I don't need no lactate pills. It's a little Groundhog's Day in that with the food thing.

Yeah. I was thinking I actually was thinking, like, there there is a there is a version of this movie that Bill Murray could be in. Totally. Oh, wow. Yeah.

I see with that. Yeah. There there's something so perfect about, Albert Brooks' version of uptight neurotic guy. It is. Yes.

So It really it resonates with me. I don't know. I I do hate I mean, this is in the early nineties, and part of Rip Torn's defenses was only $9,000 to his name. It's like 9,000 get the fuck out of here. Like, I've had, like I will it it was with $9,000 to his name.

He bought a $3,500 upgrade to his flight. I was like, holy shit. That is like I had to go back and do the math. I was like, wait a minute. Like, how how much of his what was his situation again?

And I went back and I was like, that was a third of his But he didn't wanna sit in the middle of the word. For a very long flight Yeah. And watch some Simpsons because I thought to myself, oh, the Simpsons redid this joke in a backward way where in the Bart on the Road episode, Principal Skinner is like, ah, going to Vietnam to get sweet designer suits at slave labor prices. And then he looks at his ticket, and he calls and he says, I specifically asked to have the center seat, not the aisle seat. I asked not to have the kosher meal.

Interesting. And says he wants all these changes and they're like, okay. And with the one day flight change fee, it's only an additional $7,438. And then he does take your go to work with your parents day or whatever. But I I was like, man, Albert Brooks, The Simpsons, Soul, there are so many things that he's, like, touched on or his influences there that I just love.

Oh, yeah. I feel like this this movie and I'm surprised I'd never really even heard of it, even though my brother supposedly watched it a bunch of times He lied to you. With me in the house. Yeah. Supposedly.

Where was I? What was I doing? Supposedly. Was I outside playing on my swing set? Maybe.

Supposedly. I'm kinda doing an Albert Brooks right now. I I do like when Albert Brooks kinda basically really commits to saying, I will always do the best that I can do. That's the best I can promise. I can only give you 100%.

One hundred and ten % is over the limit of what one can't give. I feel like we've sort of bounced around but come to a good ending sort of point. I love I love the ending in this movie. I know it's a little cliche, but it does that's where it tugged at my heartstrings. There was an alternate ending that he had originally written, and then I guess he had said while he was writing, he fell in love with the love story of it.

So he wrote this ending that you see, I honestly forgot. It must have been so uninteresting when I read what what he wanted it to be. Yeah. I like that he's Oh, he went back as a horse. Oh, I saw that.

Original ending. Yeah. Okay. Which is funny. It is funny, but, tonally, it would have been like that.

Yeah. But I I do like that he makes this, you know, he's brave enough. He's strong enough. I'm gonna jump off my bus and go to Merrill's bus. We're supposed to go to different places, but we belong together.

It is weird because, you know, he doesn't wanna get into theology, but the negative of this is the reincarnation, which is Buddhist like, that's the Buddhist idea Right. Until you go to Nirvana. Sure. Yeah. Right?

So I know he's not trying to be religious about it, but you can always make those connections. There are correlations all over the yeah. All over the place, for sure. But he does get pretty anti, like, the western religions. Yes.

I can't imagine why. Yeah. Did you guys see the trailer for this? I didn't see it. It gives away the entire movie.

I did not. I should've. It's infuriating. Wow. Yeah.

Yeah. I'm glad I didn't. I actually had to start doing the sheets after because I would learn too much about the movies before I was doing them in the wrong direction. Oh, that's good. Yeah.

And sometimes, the trailer trailer for Waterworld. Oh. So I haven't seen that one. I I know Have you ever seen Waterworld? I haven't seen I hadn't seen Waterworld.

That's a movie that we would recommend to. You don't need to watch it. You should watch that with What Dreams May Come in like a bang bang. I highly disagree. And we gotta rethink this show a little, I think.

Okay. So while we're while we're on the cusp here, I just wanna say, like, other favorite movies about the afterlife. I was thinking, does if Bedazzled counts? I really Oh my gosh. I really I'm a With Brendan Fraser.

A big Bernie Frasier's fan. Yeah. I'm pretty sure that counts. Does Encino Man count? Every Brendan Fraser movie.

Yeah. I mean, he was resurrected in that film. Ghost, baby. Right? Ghost.

What about Ghost dad? I know Bill Cosby is problematic, but he does come out of the phone. Fucking Ghost dad. The Charles Grodin movie, and Robert Downey Junior. Oh.

Yeah. Of course. Oh, yeah. It brought us our mystery man episode that we're still waiting on that case. Lordy.

It's a guy. Guy. You know who guest voices in that episode, Brendan Fraser, for Power Sauce Bars. No way. So that said, that is true.

Oh, a gym. Who do you wanna go first in terms of rating this puppy? How many Power Sauce Bars are we giving it? Time to murder horn. Am I included in this?

Who goes first? Yeah. Oh, okay. Doesn't really matter. I think Nothing matters.

I'll I'll go first, but I think it's one of those things where I can't be objective about it anymore. It it just is, and it exists in my psyche and and in my bones. It made me think a lot more about whether I guess this is a question I'll pose to you with my rating. Do you think you would move on or do you think you would come back based on the premise of the film of living in fear? In the life that I live now?

Yeah. Yeah. In this in in in your lifetime from when you were what what was the premise of the movie is, like, days, months, or, years, months, and days of your life? Yeah. From zero zero zero zero zero.

Unfortunately, I think I'd come back. Yeah. I think I would come back too. I I do think I would. You think you would move on?

Right now? Yeah. You feel like you've faced your fears in such a way as No. Oh, okay. I'm many years away now.

Yeah. But I would like to move on. You feel optimistic about having and that's what Al Rook says. He was like, I was I was still young. I could have turned a lot of those things around.

Yeah. Yeah. You still have to rate this. Oh, yeah. I do.

So I mean, it's still, yeah. Talking around here. It's still five out of five dead comedian on stage. Five out of five. Sweet.

Okay. Yeah. Cool. I'm sticking with the four cheese omelettes that he takes one bite of. I I do agree in terms of the way that this movie looks and looking like a little mundane or a little cookie cutter at times.

I actually think that's part of the brilliance of this movie, the way it looks, the way it sounds, the way it's structured and everything. It's like you just it's almost like taking like a Xanax or a Zola or whatever. Something that you're just like, Xanax or a Zola or whatever. Something that you're just like, meh. Yeah.

That it's it's just kind of nice and, like, off white tones all the way through and, yeah. I liked it. I'm at a full hard four mumus. Like, we're at the 4.00012. You wouldn't feel a thing.

You will not feel a thing. Is this the second time in a row we've had no movement? Maybe. I think so. I because on Botman and on Wawer?

Yeah. Wawer word. Do you guys ever talk about, like, what are your, like, five star movies? Like, dude Wawer World. We have a little bit, but I would reserve that couple if you would.

Please do. If that's what Yeah. Go ahead. You've brought it up. Okay.

So, like, if people ask what my top movie is, I have three, which are really five because the Back to the Future trilogy I count as one. Five. Okay. And then Goodfellas and Garden State are up there. Okay.

Okay. And so I don't know and those are five star movies for me. Would I put this up there with those? Like, it's probably not. So what is that?

Put a, like, a 4.8, point point nine? But, like Totally. Yeah. I think five is a great 3.5. Yep.

Yep. Yeah. But those are, like, my those are, like, my top. Your five stars? Yeah.

Yeah. I feel like we've talked about ours. A little bit. Yeah. But, Raiders of the Lost Ark for me, Eternal Sunshine the Spotless Mind for me, and In Bruges are probably, like, at the top of my list.

I will take a director that David mentioned, but mention a different film and say The Color of Money. I think The Color of Money is one of the truly incredible things. It's one of the great sequels. The Robert Rosen fucking amazing as well. But holy shit, you watch Color of Money and just a couple jobs in, you're like, oh, this fucking Tom Cruise is a star.

And there are so many camera moves in that movie, and Newman is so fucking commanding. It's a great soundtrack. It's five stars through and through, one of the great movies ever made. My favorite Scorsese movie with a bullet. No question.

Nice. Well, we did it, y'all. We did it. It's been done. The color of money, green.
