Not part of a major franchise, less than 2 and a half hours long, and that they have strong feelings about and are willing to talk about for longer than you know when you listen to this program. They give us a rating, pre rewatch, post rewatch, and then we wrap this all up with everyone giving a final rating post our open free willing discussion about what the fuck we gotta really unpack the PG rated secondhand lion starring Michael Kain.

Oh, man. Yeah. What? Yeah. Forgive me if I'm going off the rabbit trail, but what movies in the seventies was in?

We did the original Italian Job. Mhmm. Oh, that's right. Yeah. I've never seen it.

I haven't seen it. It's good. It's really fun. Yeah. It's one of those weird ones where the remake's actually maybe a little better.

And then that became a Jude Law thing. Yep. Way back especially in sixties seventies. Zulu. Mhmm.

All sorts of stuff. Oh, interesting. But it would be cool to do more movies for I just love these two actors so much. Yeah. They're great.

They're wonderful. So thank you for bringing this to us. Absolutely. I was so stoked that you guys, a, had seen it or had heard of it. Sure.

Because this is one of those movies that people are, like, you usually talk about it, and they're like, I think I may have missed that one. Mhmm. And I was like, well, you shouldn't, because it's a classic without really being the classic for some reason, but I love this movie. It's got, like, a charm about it, like, a family movie charm, like, almost, like, from the nineties that still, like, seeps into it somehow. Absolutely.

We can't get ahead of ourselves though because my first question is, Paul, how are you? God bless him. I'm mostly alright. You've been getting me, like, 3 in a row. Sorry.

I know. It was due time. I gotta be honest, more than anything, I'm happy to be here with y'all having a beer and talking about a movie. That's great. It's still like a lot of the same shit, like dealing with doctors and blah blah blah blah.

Yeah. How's that recovery going? It's mostly pretty solid. I, I told them today, like, I'm over 90% better, and they're like, great. So we'll see you again at the end of April.

And I'm like, woah. That's a long time from now. Like, why that? And they're like, we don't have enough people. And I was like, okay.

Sore, actually. But, I had both knee sleeves on, so I was rocking the great look. Oh, aging is fun, you guys. Isn't it? This movie is also talks a lot about how much fun aging is.

Like, yeah. Right? Yeah. I also wanna mention I mean, today's a a Monday. It's Monday.

But, Wednesdays, you have? I have a show. Yeah. So every, 1st and third Wednesday of the month, I perform with Nothingburger at the Pack Theatre. It is a fun long form improv show, and we are currently doing a style that is most well known as the Pretty Flower.

Yeah. So, you know, he should be really, like, hitting indeed up or Mhmm. Trying trying to just expand to move off of my roof. I'm gonna say this one more time. Yeah.

MacGruber series fantastic. Yeah. He was good in the MacGruber series. Tales from the crypt, demon knight like a motherfucker. Just saying.

Yeah. Pretty good. I feel like I'm I'm hitting the busy season for for me that's coming up. Spring is gonna be a really busy time of year. So I'm I've been keeping busy, but also enjoying some of the downtime.

I ran 4 miles today. Oh, good for you. Things like that. Trying to keep my heart and soul happy as well. I thought you were gonna say that hard to body.

Yeah. No. I'll never have a hard body body. I've come to terms with that, and that's okay. I'm just I'm just trying to keep my, retained my soul healthy.

On the good news, Earth. The only way to do that is by punishing yourself. A little bit. As we've come through. I run, I'm like, oh, I don't it's not like you finish that run and you're done.

You're doing that for the rest of your life. Life. Yeah. Right? It that's kind of the sucky thing about when you're like, oh, maybe today's workout will feel better.

No. It's just always gonna suck. I mean, oh, we gotta do this all the time? Yeah. Oh my god.

Always. Did anyone hear me? What did you say? I said, oh, it's like marriage? Oh my god.

Oh, good. Listen. I mean, I'm only about a year in, so it seems to be pretty great. Nice. Yeah.

I don't have much more to talk about No? About myself. They don't call him the best color man in the business for nothing, folks. What are we watching? Major League.

Major League. Major League. I was like, that's the only baseball movie that came to the top of my head apart from I almost called Golden Girls the baseball movie. No. Interesting.

A League of Their Own. Great deal. Great movie. There's no crying in baseball. I hear that series is pretty good.

I never watched it, but I hear it's pretty good. I I watched the the first episode, and it is very modern in my opinion. And I, like, I go for it. Yay. It was not what I was expecting, and it's hard to take a movie that's so classic in my mind and go a completely different way, which you know what?

All for it. Go for it. This is not what I was expecting. Oh, wow. Okay.

Yeah. That's not what Katy's watching. No. Not right now anyway. I'm so sorry.

What I am watching. Oh, man. Shogunn? Me too. Oh my god.

Oh. You're both like That was on my that was on my list today. Yeah. You both lit up like California wildfires and, like, just looked intensely into me. Yeah.

No spoilers. I'm also not caught up. I've watched 4 episodes, I think. There's like an there's a I think the 5th one comes out tonight or something. Okay.

So I'm not caught up. I've watched 3 episodes, I think. But Okay. Go on. Yeah.

It It's phenomenal. It's really well done. It's mostly in Japanese, but it's basically it's about a shogun who's trying to stay shogun. There's a British guy who apparently during this time in Japan, they don't realize that the British Isles are a thing. So they think that everyone that either speaks English or Spanish is from Portugal, so they keep calling them the Portuguese.

Yeah. Fair. Because the Portuguese, missioned there and turned the majority a lot of the Japanese to cath Catholicism. Yeah. Which was really just their way of getting power.

Yeah. Of course. I find it fascinating how they're telling this story and, like, how they're dealing with the religious aspects of, like, how certain people are swayed by the religious aspect and other people are more swayed by the trade roots. Yeah. Yeah.

It's really well done. That dude has the deepest voice. The British dude? Yeah. The British dude.

Just, boy. Like, literally, that's like a really good impression. Yeah. It was really good. Thank you.

I thought that was him or something. I know. I know. She patted herself on the back as she said it. Like, with both hands.

Good impression. Yeah. It's a good thing to be watching, though. Yeah. I mean, after terribly well.

Oh, it's gorgeous. Yeah. It's gorgeous. It's on Hulu. It's on Disney plus or something maybe.

Yeah. It's on a couple of few. Okay. Yeah. Now if you have Disney plus, you have Hulu.

Yeah. Not just Oh, just period now. Yeah. Okay. Yeah.

Excellent show. It's basically the new Game of Thrones, but better than the dragon show. Am I yeah. No. It's it's really well done.

Really great world building. Oh, yeah. Great character setups and Great historical stuff. Shot on location, great sets. Yeah.

That's you you see those shots and you're like, that's Japan for sure. Yeah. It's like on location looks very expensive, like, very authentic. Okay. That's awesome.

Shot on ships, sailing in seas. And that was the thing too. I mean, especially since our flag means death, like, they everybody's been shooting in those Volumes. Volumes. And I I will say that for Our Flag Means Death, I thought they did a really good job Yeah.

Especially with the water and everything. But this was like, is this in a volume? No. This looks really good. Oh.

And it's it's beautifully done. I don't know the CG effects or whatever they when they have, like, the ships actually moving through people and stuff. I don't really know. I think that's when you know that the CG is good. Yeah.

Yeah. Like, it's when they show, like, the big wide shots of the villages where I'm like, okay. Surely, some of this is practical and most of it isn't. Yeah. But I can't tell the difference.

I can't either. And that's always that's always nice. Yeah. Oh, what am I watching? Well, show them is gonna be one of them.

So sorry. So Stole it. Goddamn it. I started watching the gentleman, the series, which is so interesting to me. On Netflix?

On Netflix. Yeah. It's really good. It's good, and it's fascinating to me that Guy Ritchie is directing a series of an adaptation of his movie that he made. But the series isn't the same story as the movie, but it is slightly similar of a story.

It feels like Breaking Bad meets Weeds in England. Interesting. With the guy Richie Flair. With the total guy Ritchie flair. Yeah.

Interesting. It is. And it's I I started it like, okay. Let's see what this is about. Yeah.

You're rich. You're getting forever. And I was immediately immediately engaged. And I think that that guy, Theo Theo Oh, the frog guy? White Lotus?

Yeah. Yeah. Oh, right. He he's an intriguing, handsome man to watch. No.

He's a very good league. He's really incredible to watch. And, I mean, he's exactly what you need in a leading man. He, like, has everything covered, and it's it's cool. They give you a very good intro to his character in the first scene Yeah.

Where it's just like, he's a guy's guy, and you're like, cool. Oh, this actually is very useful for what he's about to do. Okay. I think at the very end of the first episode, there is the I call it quiet violence where it's like nothing's actually physically violent, but there's so much violence. It's just the actions of the thing.

Like, there's one of the most quiet violent scenes Okay. In the world at the end of the first episode. But I was just like, my god. It's just so interesting to me, like, that you have these art auteur directors who started in cinema and now making things for for streaming series for streaming. Yeah.

That is an interesting, like, place to be. Mhmm. Especially, like, you look at people's resumes now, directors Yeah. Actors, etcetera. The things that they seem to be interested in doing.

It's all over the place. I mean, I was talking about this at our the Oscar party I was at when the, Wes Anderson short one, which I I really enjoyed. I actually watched all of his shorts on Netflix, and I thought they were all really good. And that one that one, I thought was pretty awesome. Cool.

But it an interesting development where the short world is where up and coming filmmakers used to start to make their Right. Their names known. And now you have established filmmakers doing shorts that are getting Oscar nominated, and that's like obviously, to me, that's a Netflix coming to him thing Sure. Because they want that Oscar. Right?

They wanna be that that they wanna be known as that sort of prestige house. But where do we go from here? Right. Because now And that and it feels like it's just been across the board, that experience with so many different things in in producing, in directing, in writing, in acting. It's just like, okay.

When do we let the prestigious people Yeah. I mean Go do your thing, but all of us struggling. Did we talk about this? Where were I forget who but it was like the McDonald's commercials. They're all Brian Cox.

Really? I Brian Cox is a fantastic actor. Absolutely. Does him doing a McDonald's commercial necessarily make me more inclined to go to McDonald's? No.

Those jobs, just that little voice over job that used to go to, like, I don't know, bum fuck nobody, but they made money. Yeah. You know what I mean? Well, you look at Mercedes, I think it's Jon Hamm. BMW, I think, is Chris Pine.

Mhmm. Honda is definitely somebody. Ed Harris John Cena, I think, is one of them. Who? John Cena is one of the voices for whatever.

I think Honda. I think you're yeah. And then, I think Josh Lucas, apropos for today, is Home Depot. And so it's a I've asked myself that same question. Like, is is Josh Lucas enough of a household name?

Is he so synonymous in American fabric that I'm like, man, when I hear Josh Lucas's voice, I know that I can perform the plumbing I need to do. Probably not. And you know they're paying him a lot. Oh, yeah. Absolutely.

Because they have to meet that price tag. So it's just then when I get a breakdown that's, like, 150 a day, I'm like, I'm sorry. What? No. Yeah.

What are you talking about? Martin. Now sign this and say we can use AI to reproduce this. Yeah. You and your image and everything.

And if you won't sign it, we'll find somebody else. Exactly. A meal and a credit. Yeah. Yeah.

We just became ranting about the industry. Paul, what do you want? Nothing's dystopian at all. Oh, shit. It's a Tim Heidecker movie called American I'm gonna have to look it up again.

I'm so sorry. Tim Heidecker, the name of it. Yeah. He he did a movie not I mean, a few years ago. Were you in Us?

Yeah. I thought he was great in it too. He was so perfect for that Yeah. Character. Yeah.

But he did a movie called The Comedy that I thought was pretty good, which is more of, like, kind of, like, a tragedy. It's, like, about a guy who's just, like, floating through life and waiting to get an inheritance and whatever, and is just kind of, like, a mal content. Oh. Like, just a prick. But I watched a movie called Mister America, and it's a mockumentary, where Tim Heidecker is running for the DA of San Bernardino, mostly as a move of vengeance for the DA that went after him for the mass murder that he committed of a 109 people through these, like, contaminated, like, vape cartridges or something at some festival.

It goes very Tim Hidecker. Like, very Tim Hidecker. I was gonna say, like, this feels like very It's a it's a 3 and a half, poison vape cartridges or whatever for me. It's one of those movies, like, it's awkward. It takes, like, a really a non serious look, I should say, at, like, the political system and the media and all this other stuff.

Like, it's like his kind of twinge on it. It was pretty fun. I liked it. Awesome. Where did you watch it?

Opening weekend, September 19, 2003. I was a senior in high school. I was at the senior, like, early bird blue plate special dinner. Oh, yeah. Sure.

Undoubtedly. Sure. Sure. Sure. That's what I was yeah.

3:30. A sophomore in high school, and I don't think I saw this movie until I was, like, 20 something. Oh, okay. Because it just like like, you know, you see this movie and it's like, it's a fun family movie. PG, at that time, I'm not watching that many things.

But then when I did You're not getting ripped and watching PG movies? You know? Just get ripped. I should have done that more. Get ripped and watch some Rob.

Duvall, that is. You wanna get ripped and watch March of the Penguins? By the way, the $30,000,000 budget, that all went to, like, Michael Gayne and Robert Duvall. For sure. And redoing the house.

Oh, yeah. It made, 12,900,000 in the US, 21,800,000 adjusted. Final gross, North America, 42,000,000 adjusted. That is 70.8. Final gross worldwide, 48.2.

And the adjusted is 81.3. And I don't know if these people come here for numbers, but they get them. Yeah. Yeah. This is kind of like a little bit of a numbers, like, fetish thrown around.

But, like, you kinda have to wonder that, especially, like, 30,000,000 for this big of a movie. I mean, granted, you already you only have really 3 cast members except for a couple of, like, day players. Like, 2 locations. Yeah. Yeah.

Yeah. And then then you also have to pay for the line. Yeah. But I've seen those pamphlets. You can rent them.

They can bring them to your party. Easy. No problem. Very safe. Oh, no.

Very safe. No problem. Tiger King coming next year. I will never financially recover for all of the children that have been murdered at this party. Anyone else think of Tiger King while watching this?

Because I definitely did. Oh, sure did. No. I I was thinking of that Lee Pace movie, The Fall. You did that movie?

I thought of that. You did do that movie. Yeah. Came out 3 years after this movie, so that's that's interesting. You know, it's I guess, like, the highest echelon of, like, this type of movie to me is Princess Bride.

Oh, sure. Just below that is The Fall. Although it's, like, maybe the best, like, very kind of, like, Jesus. This is, like, serious. This is, like, very super serious.

Yeah. That one is way up there. It's like there's genre of like Storytelling. People or people who are dying just telling stories. I think that is a thing.

You know, and I we haven't seen something like that in a whole long time. It's been a bit. At least nothing with like this much heart, I would say. No. Not the resonance.

Yeah. Other releases this weekend, Underworld, The Fighting Temptations, Cold Creek Manor, anything else. Yeah. I think Underworld is the most mid movie that's ever been made. Never seen it.

You know what's funny? I don't wanna call anyone out, but I will. My wife, Jessica Martin Last person you should call out. Yeah. Loves those, those movies.

I hadn't seen them. I I I don't think I'd seen them until I was with her. Okay. I saw the first one many years ago, and the special effects are fine. The acting's fine.

The writing's fine. But everything's just fine. Yeah. And so it's one of those things where I wasn't like, this is bad, but in no way was it, like, this is good. And so it's like so is it bad?

Like, by just being fine all who knows? I mean, it it sounds like the same argument where I was like, I read all of the Hunger Games books in, like, 3 days, which is huge for me because I don't read fast. I'm gonna say that's, like, 92 pages. Those are fast. They're fun books, though.

They're fun to read. But, like, they're they're candy. They're Yeah. You know, like, there there's nothing of substance to that. There there's nothing that can hold you and be, like, oh, I have to think about this.

It's like, okay. I went I ripped through this like a bag of Cheetos. I ripped through this like, what was it? The the March of the Penguins. March of the Penguins.

Yeah. I got ripped. But, like, someone was like, so that means it's good. I was like, no. That just means that it was very consumable.

Doesn't mean people love 50 Shades of Grey in Twilight. Doesn't make them good. Good. Yeah. What?

But it does make them I guess good is relative. So And it's Yeah. I know. Consumable is its own thing. Own thing, especially over the last quite a few years.

Is underworld consumable? Absolutely. It is. Okay. Entertaining.

Absolutely consumable. Interesting world building. Ben, go on with the the facts there. Sorry. Oh, sure.

We can top 5 underworld, this film, the fighting temptations, once upon a time in Mexico, and Cold Creek Manor. I did, like, once upon a time in Mexico. I enjoyed it the first couple times I watched it. Only saw to the theaters. I was also I was in a big Johnny Depp kick at that time.

Lot of people were. Yeah. 2003, he was kind of, like, at the height. Oh, yeah. Top 5 films this year, Lord of the Rings, Return of the King, Finding Nemo, The Matrix Reloaded, The Pirates of the Caribbean, The Curse of the Black Pearl Case in point.

It seemed like, it seemed like, to me, like, just a a calculated or, like, smart parents or whatever. Just being like, we're gonna we're not gonna do this. How you're gonna go to school. But he's also done a shit ton of voice acting too, like, a lot. Yeah.

It's not bad. And then it quickly goes like lot of good stuff. This log line doesn't really go into the plot of the movie, to be honest. Oh, for real?

Mhmm. It doesn't. It doesn't. The the log line is 14 year old Walter Caldwell's irresponsible mother, May, sends him to live with his bachelor bachelor uncles Hub and Garth so that she can go on yet another husband hunting trip. But that doesn't get into who Walter, Hub and Garth are, any of the story telling, or the fact that they get a lion.

It also, like, sounds like that log line sounds like a movie about the mom. Like, about her adventure to, like, find some d. Yeah. Yeah. To beat somebody off.

The first time I saw this movie was I a lot of the movies I see for the first time were usually when I was in college and I was like, I need to see more content because I just had a lot of Veggie Tales and Jesus content when I was a kid. And when I was like, I wanna be an actor, my uncle wrote down, like, a bunch of movies that I needed to see, which were all old school Hollywood films, like Sunset Drive and, like, the Thin Man series and stuff. So this is one of those movies that I picked up via, like, the dollar store cart DVD section. Oh, Walmart for dollar.

Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. And I was like, oh, Haley Joel Osment. Wow.

And I was like, I love Michael Caine from Miss Congeniality. That that was my one pull back then. And so I was like, oh, I'm gonna watch this. And then I fell in love with this movie. Felt like the same kind of heart that you have with a Spielberg movie.

I was like, how are people not talking more about this movie? It can be a little hokey. Sure. But it there's like it's it felt like the last bastion of innocence with this movie. Interesting.

Yeah. And so out of 5, whatever you want, what would you have said in that in that initial viewing? What would you give it? Out of 5 beat offs, sorry. I'm just No.

Don't apologize. Out of 5 beat offs, my initial viewing, I would have given it, like, a 3.5 or a 4. Okay. And I I I thought it was great, but I was also like, no. You know, I can see how it could be a little bit cheesy after watching it again.

I don't even remember the theatrical run of this movie, and I did not see this movie when it was like that hot commodity at Hollywood video, despite my enjoyment of Robert Duvall and Michael Caine. And obviously, I'm a Nicky Catman as we've discussed. And a Haley Joel Osman. Yep. I really like Haley Joel Osman.

AI is not my favorite movie. I'll tell you that right now. It would have been too interesting to see Kubrick finish that movie. Yeah. Absolutely.

It would have been great to see one person see through that whole vision. Yeah. Yeah. I watched this this morning. I really didn't fully know what I was getting into.

And I feel I need to make sure I make my rating system clear. As Ben very correctly pointed out, like, Paul, 2.5 is kinda like failing, and I'm like, 2.5 is low end of average, 3 is high end of average. That's why I justified this. So as I say that, I'm gonna give this 3 shotguns. Oh, okay.

It's gotta be shotguns. It's like the most prevalent thing in the entire movie. I couldn't think of anything else. I I can't tell an actor who's better suited to hold a shotgun on a porch than Robert Duvall. I cannot agree more with that.

And it's weird kind of to see, Maurice with a gun. As well as That's his job. Partially, it's like, man, stop stop making that man try to sound anything other than pretty much only British. Maybe American some of the time. Not not just British, but cock me.

Yes. Yeah. Like, it's Yeah. He's not like Christopher Walken. He's not on that level of it's so synonymous with him.

Right. But it's so fucking close, and it's can be distracting. I will say, though, that they picked a good accent for someone with a cockney accent who has a hard time hiding it to do. Yeah. It floats at times for sure.

They're like, I do declare mister Beauregard. Yeah. It it's very like Georgia Southern in a way. He has a very Georgia Southern. Yeah.

That's a little bit different than what Duval has because they're in Texas. Yeah. Well, before we move on to your point, Katie, it's like family friendly person telling a story or a tale or adventure or whatever. Princess Bride is the 5 of 5 to me. Okay.

I like this movie, but to the other thing you were saying about, like, some of it feels less broad demographic where it reaches, like, 30 something, 48 something year olds, and you're kinda you do the kinda like, okay. Like, this is a family movie, whatever. And I definitely let it have passes because it's a very quality movie. But also, like, there some of the shots and the way that the movie is, like, composed, some of the edits are just, like, kind of weird. Oh, for sure.

More than anything, an incident a situation with the lion. Oh. And another thing with, like, Josh Lucas at the end of the movie where it's, like, the music and the way it shot and lit, like, he's like this hero. Like, he's like a god or something, and it's just like very I'm like, Like, the way that it it looks or the feel of it is like it doesn't feel like, wow. I'm back home.

It's like more of a, wow, the hero, the amazing, great, wonderful man has returned. Like, it just feels weird. Okay. I also had not seen this movie prior to watching it last night. The cover of this movie is ingrained in my brain because I worked Hollywood Video Sure.

And restocked it a lot. So it was definitely checked out a lot. I didn't know how you felt about this movie going into it. So I didn't know if this was a movie where you're like, this is fucking laughable, or this is a movie you love. Like, I didn't know.

So going into it, I didn't know which side of that coin it was gonna fall. Okay. I thought, honestly, my and this is another maybe conversation about expectation. I think I went into it thinking that it was not gonna be good. Okay.

That it was gonna be cheesy or, like, saccharin or is, like, kinda dumb, and I really enjoyed it. I was like, this is a charming movie, a charming coming of age movie with charming actors, and it's a unique story with some fun flashback storytelling that feels a little bit fairy tale y and romanticized, which is fun. And I love the sort of the world of the house and the farm and and the relationship that sort of cultivated between the 3 guys. I was pleasantly surprised by That's so great to hear. By it.

So I think I will give it I I walked away with 3 and a half lion paws. Nice. Mostly the puppet lion paw. I don't remember you noticed that. Oh, yeah.

A couple lion puppets. I will I will agree. Like, that does take it down a couple of a a couple of key offs. But, no, it like, some of the puppetry stuff is, like, on the level of black sheep. Like To Paul's point, there are some, like, rough edges a little bit around this movie where, like, there are some things that don't necessarily sync up.

You mentioned Spielberg, and I think Spielberg is definitely sort of our barometer for measuring more Modern adventure. Yeah. And and, like, and more, like, emotionally driven sort of, like, narratives. And I think that this it floats up there, and it doesn't quite hit the the Spielberg level. Yeah.

But I would say that this is a undervalued movie. Agree. I still really liked it. It's one of those things where it's like I talk to people about family movies, blah blah blah. And I'm like, one I bring up all the time is Little Giants.

It's a 3 and a half star movie for me. Really, really like it. Could watch it a 1,000 times. Sure. I think the thing for me with this, we talked about this in a different recording.

What's the rewatchability factor for me? For Little Giants, maybe a little higher than 2nd hand lines. Oh, wow. Both solid family films. Everybody can enjoy that.

Yeah. Well, and that's the thing is that I I think the thing that makes it so much more fun to me is that I've not seen a family friendly film In a while. In a long time. It does not have to be animated. That's not animated.

That's not hokey as shit. Makes you groan. You're like, you know, it's for the kids. It's not meant for you. It's for kids.

But, like, this is like a literally a movie that's made for everyone and it's adventure and it's fun. And they do have a real lion who was female and very young, apparently, and not at all old. Yeah. There's something about this movie that I, I feel like I I have a kinship to where it's like, man, it just didn't hit at the right moment. Yeah.

I honestly feel like if I had watched this when it was first on video or what have you, and bear in mind, I was only in my fifties at that point. But it wouldn't have I probably would have been like, this is hokey. This is dumb. Like, that probably would have been my attitude. Yeah.

And now seeing this as I'm a little bit older, there were even like a couple moments where I'm just like, oh, jeez. Like, there's there there's not a like, I was even watching some clips even after watching it again. It still makes me cry. It gets me it tears me up every single time because the acting's phenomenal. Should we start the movie?

And now, our feature presentation. 1st and foremost, I thought of this, I think, the way that Kain and Duval think of themselves in the movie. I'm like, these are just like 2 old dudes doing some family movie. And it not realizing that these were still 2 masters, like, at the height of their powers. Well, the way we start this movie is they're just flying around there by plane.

Yeah. We get that really cool font of the like, it's almost like a Sanskrit or whatever of, like, secondhand lines. And then all of a sudden, you're, like, on the biplane. They're going a 120. They go underneath the overpass.

Yeah. Right in front of the, speed check. Echo. Which is a great way to start a movie. Yeah.

Yeah. And we see these shots of this cartoonist, in his office. He has these shots of like, he has these cartoons up on the wall, and they're lions and, like, a boy. And he gets a call and says, we have some bad news about your uncles. And then that's, like, that's the only sort of, like, structure for the end of the movie we have because then it jumps right back to the sixties.

Or 30, 35 years in the past. Yeah. Is it sixties that this movie takes place in? I think so. Yeah.

Yeah. I was I was trying to remember. But yeah. No. Definitely the sixties.

And it goes right into the car ride to the uncles. And I don't know where they're coming from or how long they've been in the car or exactly how shitty the mom is or or exactly how timid Walter is. But the first thing I'm thinking of as Keira Sedgwick's dumping all this exposition. We're gonna go see your great uncles. You're they probably have money.

This is what you're gonna do. This is where I'm gonna be. This is Well, it seems like he's out of school now. Yeah. It's the summer.

This summer. Yeah. But, like, wouldn't she have told him so much of this stuff before, like, the last 10 minutes of the car ride over? Like, it just felt like it was like, Well, not when you're a deadbeat mom. Who just went for some d.

I should know that. Yeah. You know, I mean, that I'm gonna keep going back to that because this poor boy is clearly a second thought. It's if he could be a latch key kid in the sixties, he would have been. Yeah.

But she also has this grand idea as everyone in town seems to that they have millions of dollars We learned that they've reappeared after 40 years. Right. And there's a rumor going around that they have a bunch of money. Mhmm. And she really is yeah.

She wants to dump him so she can go get that d. And she also wants to get some of that money. Yep. And she wants him to find it. The American dream, really.

And when they show up to the the farm, on their way to the farm, there's signs that say, like, turn back. Yeah. Yeah. Radiation. Yeah.

Yeah. Like, every, like, warding kind of, like and, like, I feel like that's the first moment of quirky clarity you get where it's just, like, oh, this is funny, but, like, harsh. Yeah. Like cranky old fuckers Yeah. Like, essentially.

That could probably shoot you. Yeah. I mean, it's their property, essentially, I think. Right? I mean, it's Texas.

And they do love shooting some guns. Yeah. I love that their farm too is just like or farm is loose term. But, like, there's just a bunch of loose animals on their property. Like dogs, pig.

Like, 5 dogs, a pig, chickens. Mhmm. Apparently, it there's, like, an entire outtake scene of them trying to put the chicken on top of the pig. I mean, it's just them wrangling the chicken. Over and over.

And the only reason I'm so fascinated by animal wranglers and rabies. You know? Yeah. I'll be a cat wrangler. I'll do it.

Do you wanna you do it right now. Do you wanna go get rid of it? My neighbor said that my cat should be in commercials, and I was like, yeah. If you could get him to sit still. He's adorable.

We all have secondhand lions. Yeah. Oh my lord. Oh, I have a story about that as we get, further into this. You're gonna keep us in suspense.

Us. No. I'm gonna wait till we get to that moment in the movie. But we all have secondhand lions. But I will say we tried to record an audition where Jess was holding Rudy.

And the second we started recording, he was like, woah. And she was like, okay. Fine. He heard the beep of the camera and was like, okay. Got it.

My I heard my cue. That is my cats all the way. Beat himself off of her. He's like, we're out of here. But as usual, Kane's accent is fucking wild.

And he's doing his but he's still so emotionally present. He That's all. The performance is good. Yeah. Yeah.

There's no question about that. The accent is definitely second rate for sure. But he he himself there's not a moment that you can see Michael Caine where he's not a grounded motherfucker. That's not for the great in the movie. He was nominated for Cider House Rules where he has an American dialect.

He's pretty solid at American, I as I had mentioned earlier. It's just the southern that is. If it's just flat like you or I, like Washington Staters, like general American accent, he he can do it. Sure. British dialects or whatever, of course.

But, like, when it's, like, the southern dialect or certain other thing, like, when we were watching noises off, or it's, like, certain things you watch. Like, it's you were saying, he's got, like, such a distinct, like, cockney accent or anything like that. Rhythm to it, but but emotionally, he's just there. He's fantastic. Yeah.

And they when they when they when she drops off this kid, immediately, they're like, we're not gonna take that little pansy kid or whatever. Yeah. Robert Paul's like, I don't like it. I don't know nothing about kids. I didn't know Boomhower was here.

That's cool. We got a celebrity guest too. And he was like, hey, Frank. Come on. Michael King was like, bum, humble.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 100%. So all these sales folks start arriving, and we find out there there's no phone, no lights, no motor cars, not a single luxury.

They have no telephone. No TV. No TV? And What do you do? They shoo off salesman all day.

That's what they they sit on their porch. Or iced tea or whatever they're drinking. Yep. Iced tea brought to you by, Sheryl and Fenn and iced tea. Not brought to you by streaming beat off services.

Don't drink that iced tea. No one wants that. Throw that in a fire. But that's what they do. They even, like, practically they hand each other ammo to, like, reload their shot.

This is their their everyday, I think. Well, because people I mean, we'll we'll learn more, but they seem to want to be left alone Yeah. In this. And they know that people now know that they have money, and that's gonna bring people out of the woodwork. But I think one of the best moments is when they first send, Walter after they agree to take him on, his mom leaves.

And so Walter going up to his bedroom The tower. As it's called. And it's, like, terrifying. It's dark. And they're like, we don't know nothing about raising kids.

Yeah. And the room's dusty as all hell. The line of, like, so if you need some, get it yourself. Figure it out. Yeah.

Figure it out. You're on your own. They do make him breakfast the next morning, but we learn pretty quickly that that isn't necessarily true. No. It's it it's a total front.

It's the grumpy old man type, like But also, I think they're being, like, are you just here to, like, steal our money? Yeah. Oh. No. They're being very cautious.

Yeah. Yeah. Which I didn't I didn't realize that that was, like I mean, I think that's why they're so Yeah. Cold to everybody in this moment. Like, to everybody.

Yeah. Also, there are plenty of people to not like, and they're coming soon. Oh, thank you. Yes. Many, many people.

The big thing that this movie does, like, with the script that's, like, so effective is they keep, like, rolling back to things. Yeah. Like and they roll like, Robert Duvall sleepwalking and started fighting with a plunger. And Haley Joel Osment doesn't wanna disturb him, but it's like a weird crazy thing. Well, he finds that key in his tower and it opens that little, like, trunk.

Yeah. And it it's full of sand Yeah. Which is so exciting because you were like, is this a treasure hunt movie? Yeah. Yeah.

Well and then then it's like the first inklings of like, oh, there's a bit and, like, you start to get kind of clues, especially with the sort of the Sanskrit style of, like, the title card and and whatnot and then, like, this big box of sand. And you're like, what are we in for? Yeah. What are we walking into here? It's not just Texas.

How interesting is this? Yeah. And he gets he finds a photo of a of a beautiful woman in Jasmine. Wedding dress? Or she's just Just sort of formal.

So yeah. Wedding dress, I think. Or just a nice dress. Dress. Just a nice dress?

I can't remember. It might have been a wedding dress. It might have been a wedding dress. Yeah. She stood still for 7 hours or so.

They can take it. It's the next day, right, where the other family members show. Yeah. They they have breakfast and they kind of go to garden. Touch on, like, we were all over Africa.

Yeah. Yeah. And they fail at gardening and then the shitty relatives. They come on in. Yeah.

Also gardening is is hard. Yes. It is. Oh, man. As someone who's been trying to grow basil for the better part of 4 years and can't get it to grow I can't keep the same plant in it or house.

In my planter box, I had 4 plants. Uh-huh. 3 of them didn't make it. Oh. But the one that survived and continues to flourish is my, yeah, is my jalapeno plant.

Oh. For like 2 years and it still flowers and still provides jalapenos over and over and over and over. Good to know. I think the other 3 got eaten by the squirrels, to be honest. That'll do it.

They don't like to eat the jalapenos. The crazy, craziest thing that seems to grow really well for me is green onions from the grocery store. I just planted those Oh. Right into my little garden plots out on my balcony, and they will not stop growing. Oh.

Yeah. They go like crazy. There is a mold on a cheese that's in my refrigerator that has expanded to a point that it, seems to be conscious Oh. And speaking to me and asking me questions. Interesting.

And telling me to start the reactor. What's the Wade, start the reactor. There's me on a screen here riding towards the camera. I'm I'm not Quaid. I it's hard to shut the refrigerator, but that's the only thing I can grow.

Haley Joel Osment is gonna call his mom. Yes. Well, first off, when the military show up, up, they're assholes to him. Oh, they're Yes. They suck.

They suck because all they want is money. They think that he wants money, and they know his mom is a deadbeat. Yeah. And then she's a gold digger. Yeah.

She's a gold digger. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. We now owe Kanye and the estate of Ray Charles $50,000. Oh, okay.

But, yeah, he runs away. He runs away to call his mom, and she has told him that she is at this court reporting School? Yeah. School. Yeah.

Which is She's gonna be like a stenographer or something. Yeah. Right. And so he he gets to a gas station and calls the court reporting school in somewhere wherever, and they're like, she's not here. Also, that school's we started in January.

Yeah. Impossible. Impossible. And he knows that she just straight up lied to him, and she's going to get that dick. Which is like which is a common theme kinda running throughout the entire movie and this whole premise is what what is true and what is false.

Yeah. What is what's a lie, what's a lie for convenience, and what is a lie for just Necessity. Yeah. Yeah. That's a good point.

I guess maybe part of the reason why I didn't rate this higher is because so much of it just, like, rings a little too close to life. Where it's just like, Paul, the TV is gonna watch you. I gotta go get that d. Let's keep you Love you. Yeah.

See? Yeah. It's gonna become therapy soon? Brought to you by This is where, Duvall and Kane, like, right when the movie wants them to. So I've gotta give them credit for that.

As I was saying, like, the writing is true. Like, come down pretty good. Yeah. But they, like, they start to endear themselves to the audience as well as Haley Joel with, like, the runaway chat. Like, we know you wanna go to Montana.

We know you're determined. Yeah. But if you wanna come back We'll entertain the idea. Because I think especially when they see Haley Joel has been with the obnoxious family, they realize that he's not in this for anything. He's just a kid that got dropped off.

Yeah. What I love in that scene, I love Michael Caine's looks to Robert Duvall. Yeah. I think that the performance there is just, like, solid. You know exactly what he's saying.

I'm so glad that you brought that up because I think that's, like, the real strength between the 2 of them. It's not only that they're great actors, but it's the things that they're saying without speaking. Yeah. And they feel like they've been brothers for 6, 7 years or whatever. And it's so delicate.

None of it feels super forced. It doesn't feel like Michael Caine's like, look at me do this thing. Like, it all is just these are 2 actors that know their frame so well and understand the art so well. It's hard not to just be like, oh, yeah. These guys are amazing.

Like, this is exactly what I expect. Where it's like, even in lower budget for the time, I guess. Like family movie, these guys are like at every single turn, like, yeah. We're we're we're going for it. We're still always going for it, man.

Yeah? Yeah. Yeah. And they convince him to come back and the shitty relative leave. Yes.

Because they they suck. They're just there to get his their money. Did anybody think that it would have been slightly interesting if the relatives were at all had a shot at this? I would have thought it would be interesting if Robert Duvall shot one of them. I mean, a shot at the money, but, yeah, that's a good deal.

What I think though is interesting is that Shot it. And I think the movie is smart at doing this, is that it drops that narrative entirely. Yeah. And I think that Kinda get that out of the way. Because Forget the money for a bit.

Because he because Walter doesn't think about it. Right. Yeah. And I think that that's where we're we're going is that it's not about it's not a race to the money. It's not we're not doing rat race.

You gotta get these rats out of office according to Tim Heidecker. That was in the movie I was watching. We gotta get this rat out of here. We had to reference a movie that we all haven't watched. I know.

Yeah. I'm gonna But I watched it. You did. You did. We talked about it.

You can have that enjoyment in your little head. My little tiny pin head. But we gotta get to the flashback when Michael Caine starts telling him the story. One of my favorite lines in the movie is, like, we'll see what he's saying. Dan will shoot him.

And then he goes, good plan. Good plan. I think I'm, like, okay. And they're lovable, old men. They're, like, shh.

What are those things called? A, Skeet shooting. Skeet shooting. Oh, yeah. That's right.

I love that like, this is the big thing for me, I guess. Like, I was a tiny bit late to the party is where they get that Skeet shooting machine and Haley Joel Osment's like, you got all this money. You might as well spend it. And they're like, oh, yeah. He's got a good point.

Yeah. Like, clearly, he's not. Which is like the only point that where they confirm that they do have a lot of money. The only point. And and that's when the relatives are like, this thing is a what a waste of money.

Get the hell out. And that's what they're like, we'll take it. Yep. Yeah. And they they really just want these people to go.

They make that very clear several times Yeah. Through the movie. And then they do. And this is where he sees Hub is sleepwalking again. Yep.

You know what made you feel the story? He always sleepwalks down by the water and then starts, like, sword fighting. Mhmm. Mhmm. And then Garth meets him Chris Gaines.

And they and they sit there and they talk. He tells them starts to tell them this romanticized story of their journeys first through Europe Yeah. During World War 2. They made their way to Africa. Yeah.

Yeah. I I did live on Michael Caine's like, you want me to tell you a story? It could take days. I'm like, that's an old person's ecstasy. Yeah.

Like, of course, he wants that little boy to say yes so bad. He's like, I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. Like, you know, like, he's ready to grandpa Simpson at any moment. Just give him a shot. Yeah.

He asked that question and then just like zooms in on his eyes and it's just sweaty like, oh my god. Please say yes. Can he tell you a story? Can I tell you a story? This is like us inviting Katie on our podcast.

Wait. Sorry. Christian Kane himself with a mustache. The first flashback of Hub was as strong as 20 men and this this whole thing. He rode with these guys who were killing slavers.

Right. And then, like, I also love the the fact that, like, they adjust something and then, like, the the visual adjust as well. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Which I thought was.

And I thought of the fall in this moment. I would Yeah. A 100%. But this is this is the exact moment where I thought of the fall where, Lee Pace is, like, talking to the kid and, like, everything. I love you've seen that movie.

Yeah. Because Yeah. That's a really hard movie to find. It is a very hard movie to find. My husband actually was because I showed him 2nd hand lions, and he was like, you know what this reminds me of?

And so then we watched The Fall. Where did you find it? He has it legally downloaded, so I don't recommend that because you have to pay for art. But this is a really hard movie to find. Jess is the one my wife is the one who brought The Fall.

It's yeah. And she we own it on disc, and it's very hard to find that Blu ray disc. Like, very hard. I haven't had it on disc. That's amazing.

Weird thing too. The Fall is the remake of a movie called Yo Ho Ho, like, from the 70 years or something that I've never seen. And I was just like, how how did I not know any of this existed? Right. Like, it was like, how did this all blow by me?

I want you to get sorry to take you off track, but No. Go back to the fairy tale, but it's like, yeah. The fall just kept punching me in the face while I was watching this. No. Absolutely.

And the colors in the flashbacks, they're very bright. Yes. Yeah. God, who wouldn't wanna play a young Robert Duvall? Oh, Oh, who wouldn't?

As much Christian Kane actually does a really good job Yeah. In this movie. Obviously, he's young Christian Kane, and he doesn't have to say a lot. Yeah. And he has to have a mustache and look handsome.

Dude. Like my must And look like he's not 5 foot 3. What? Who played young Michael Caine? Do we know?

Oh, boy. I don't know that actor. Know. The one with the glasses. Yeah.

And one of them was the was the hand woman to a princess. Mhmm. And she told she recanted the story to the princess, and the princess was like, I have to meet this man. And that's where I think that part of the story ends. Yeah.

It's like the first initial thing of the Sheik. Yeah. Mhmm. Yeah. We don't get to the first meeting of Hub and the princess yet.

No. There's several flashbacks, like, to break the story. Yeah. Because it jumps all around. Because next, we're Then we're going is this when we go into the corn?

Corn. I mean, I thought that was gardening. They buy a bunch of seeds that they think are the 3 of them have created a ritual Yeah. Of every morning getting up, breakfast, and they have their overalls. Yes.

Oh, I love I love their oversized overalls. I will say, though, like, when you talk about gardening, it is a very, like, zen art form. It is. And so for this movie, for the story, for the 3 of the and especially, I think he's doing I think Garth is doing it for Hub. Mhmm.

Because Hub needs peace. Agreed. And they think they think it's gonna, like, solve all of the night walking type stuff. And then they also really need more vegetables in their diet as we come to find out. Yeah.

Weirdly. And then it all turns out to be corn and Corn. It does have the juice. You gotta give them that. Corn's got the juice.

And then, like, when did they cut this off? Because Yeah. I know the lion shows up before a lot of the other stuff. This the I think the lion's basically here. It's being delivered.

And this is where I can, like just in this moment, I'm like, oh, I can feel my blood start to get warm. Because, like, anything with it's like with the movie that shall not be named. Movies with, like, animals, especially animals that I'm like, that that animal doesn't need to be in a movie. Like, for whatever reason, I'm like, I don't like that. And, like, it distracts me.

Isn't the next flashback after Hub is in the hospital?

Because he had a he had a spit a fainting spell. Hub had a fainting spell, and then he He's he's, like, fresh out of the hospital. After so which looks like hospital next to this 3. Right? Fainting spell hospital?

I think that's what he was. He faints when they pick up the food. So that's where we get the flashback. Because some lady tells Walter at the water cooler where he goes to, they're like, those men are hit men for the moon. Yeah.

Yeah. And, like, that they were with Al Capone. Yeah. Yeah. All the stories.

And, like, he doesn't have a photo or anything. Like, she's saying, like, call the police. It's so good. The the way that all these especially this particular family is, like, trying to work their way around to get rid of him or, like, get their get their money, what they feel they're entitled to or what how are they related? Did they ever say?

The that shitty family. How do they believe that they are Uncles to them too. Or something. Because they say something about his mom, or they say, like, oh, it's her. Oh, her.

Like, how bad is that? That they are cousins of his mom. Okay. That's what I assume. Oh, okay.

It I'm not gonna lie. The the family ties was also one of those things that I wasn't sure if it was actually real or not. Mhmm. Like, there was, like, a part of me that was, like, is this, like, quote, quote uncles? Or No.

It's like a crappier version of Apollo and Rocky, like, running on the beach in Rocky 3. Yeah. I mean, it's very Black Beauty, but it's also Yeah. Yeah. I I like the Robert Duvall thing when they're they're in this cafe having barbecue or whatever, and they're all just, like, chit chatting minding their business and a bunch of, like, greasers come in or whatever.

Like, the Ponyboy, soda pop Curtis, and everybody comes in. A 100%. And wanna start, like, fighting or whatever. Hey, man. Fly.

Yeah. We've got Robert Duvall straight out of the hospital. Yeah. And he's gonna kick the shit out of all these guys. Michael Caine goes and gets a gun.

1 on 1, and then the 3 of you can jump in when I say. Yeah. The 4 of you can all fight him, but it's gonna be on our terms. It's a very John Wick scene, but let's be real. Like, he's like, don't hold a knife like that.

What's the one? You know? Old John Wick, the the old man with Jeff Bridges. Oh, no. That was a good movie.

It's proto that. I liked that joke. Mister Nobody was also pretty good. Yeah. Old Boy?

No. This is one of those movie those moments, though, where it's, like, a mix a weird mix of, like, hokey and, like, pretty solid. Yeah. Where it's like the acting's kinda hokey. The staging is a little hokey.

But, like, the movements, like, when when, Duvall gets him in an armbar, you're like, woah. Yeah. That looks like Duvall got him in an armbar. Well, and apparently, here's another fun fact for you. Apparently, no one told Duval not to connect with his punches.

And that last take where he's actually bleeding is, like, the 5th time he actually punched that dude in the face. He thought dude he was a stunt guy or something? Or, like, he did not reveal all. He thought that he thought he was a stunt guy. Oh, he was a stunt guy.

Still, but yeah. He it's just some actor who's just like, you know what? I'll just take a punch in the face by Robert Temple. Why not? Right before they said action, he was looked at him dead in the face without blinking, and he said, I'm Robert Fucking And they said, actually, he started punching the shit out of him.

Real quick. By the way, I'm hire me. I'm ready. Yeah. I'll take that job.

And so so I actually kicked him. And I remember afterwards, he was like, what the fuck? And I was like, I I told you. At least I told you. I told you I was gonna kick you.

Duh. Yeah. He's like, well, then I just had to take it. I I will not lie. When every time I did Shakespeare or whatnot, I had this one sword fighting partner that, like, just came in because he thought he was a big dick and, like, he just, like, was filling in for someone else.

He thought he was beaten off for guys. Yeah. Well, and he just didn't remember the choreography and nothing makes me more insane than someone who's like So confident and so stupid? Oh, yeah. A 100%.

Yeah. Dude. Yeah. And I I, like, nearly impaled him several times on my phony broadsword. I was just like, dude, what do you I hope you killed it.

Near impaled. I couldn't. Near impaled. But you know what? He nearly kills these boys, like, literally Yes.

Dude all, like, throws them in the ground. And when they get back to the farm Yeah. We see the car arrive. It's Walter and Garth and then It's the boys. And then he comes with the greasers.

Yeah. Robert Duvall, who we just beat the shit out of all of them, is in their car Driving their car. Days now. Just like, oh. He's putting a steak on their face.

Get some meat, boy. But the relatives have shown up back at this fucking farm. And the stupid little kids who I thought that little kid was the kid from Malcolm in the Middle, the little one, but it wasn't. Oh, I did 2 for a second. Yeah.

I kinda did 2. And it was Dewey? Oh. I always thought he was Dewey. He was in a different Michael Kain movies in Sarah Howard's Rules.

He was the the kid who dies. Oh. But he would put it older at this point, I think. The kids die. But I thought it was him that it was.

Wrong kid died. This poor fucking lion, I'm just thinking, like, in that stupid How long has it been in that fucking thing? I know. And what's going on here? And that, like, the little shitty bratty kids let the lion out.

And I'm like, well, villains are now the heroes. Right. I was like, let the lion out. I was like, that lion should eat those kids. Oh, I was like, no.

I think would have killed them. I think that was the intent. Like, I mean, every movie's gotta have some kind of emotional drive. My emotional drive was that the lion eats the children that were assholes. I'm rooting for that lion.

It didn't eat him. Yeah. I know. It didn't. It didn't follow through and I get that clear.

Reason why I'm saying that. To the ladies credit, they do say that they're the the lion is old and, like, doesn't care about anything. Yeah. And it it is tired and, like, yeah. Old circus land that's been beat to shit or something.

Probably basically lived in a tiny little fucking cage for most of its life for a while. Which makes me so sad. Have you seen videos of, like, bears that were in the circus? I've watched that. And they just, like, they're huge and huge.

Why do you hate yourself? Because he asked to talk about the movie that shall not be named. Yeah. You hate Why do why do you hate yourself? Dude, I didn't ask to be born.

Tell my mom that every single week. So That's what your mom dropped out. So proud of you. I'd just be like that that line would have killed that fucking kid. No question.

It's all sitting in that thing. It's hot. It's hungry. It's pissed off. But It's just waiting for its kibble.

I I want this movie to turn into the movie Roar that most people don't know what that is, but it's like a movie mostly about people that are like, we're gonna live with in harmony with lions. And the movie is about that. And I think it has, like, a young Melanie Griffith and maybe Tippi Hedren and stuff. But, like, some people got, like, mauled or whatever. Yeah.

Oh, god. People, like, got hurt. And it's like, yeah. You know, it's you watch Don't Look Up and everybody goes to that planet and they're like, oh, look at the animals. And it's like, no.

Wild animals fucking kill you. You are food. It's like, what do you not understand? It's like watching grizzly man. I was like, oh, yeah.

Yeah. No. He's gonna die. Yeah. It's gonna happen.

Yeah. By the way, that was my only favorite scene of don't look up. Same. That's what I think. Favorite scene from grizzly man was this Oh, yes.

That too. Yeah. Yeah. Gray. I could watch it again and again.

It's a snuff film, but okay. Got it. I mean, so it paved the way for The Revenant. We're getting there. Mind you got, but yeah.

Yeah. And wait for The Revenant. But I get the lion is happy apparently. Well, the lion's Out of the cage. Yeah.

Because it got out of the cage and it's in the corn. And then it goes into the corn and then it gets it, like, thinks it's back in the jungle. Alright. I get it. Some of the logic is a little hokey.

I agree. But, like, the delivery of it, like, it's it's sort of that suspension of disbelief that I feel like we've really gone far away from in films and movie making where it's like everyone has to explain the midi chlorians and shit. Oh, god. You know, like You just fucking hit a nail on a head for me. You're amazing.

Good job. Keep going. You're ready. I'm just saying that, like, because there is this theme of, like, are you lying to me? Are you telling me an actual story?

There was something about that within the movie that, like, it was like a band aid or a salve on these things where it's like, sure. The lion thinks it's in the jungle because it's amongst a bunch of cornstalks. I mean, far stretch. But, like, within this movie, in this context, I believed it. And I was like Absolutely.

And it's fine. It's totally fine. It keeps the story moving. Yeah. Well, as you said, it like, the midichlorian thing.

Sorry, Ben. But it's also, like, the Halloween legacy sequels that came out. Yes. I I've talked to Ben about this ad nauseam where it's like, I really like the one from 2018. And then it was, like, let's give a reason to, like, why Michael Myers is we have the same, like, killing machine.

And I was like, I don't fucking care. Yeah. Like, just let him be evil. Stop it. And I feel like that's like a Yeah.

That's a point. A producer thing where it's just like, well, why why is this happening? And unless it's plot, unless it's, like, driving the story forward, if it unless it's like Yeah. We don't need to know every detail We don't. Why this is happening.

And I feel like we've gotten so far away from that that everyone has to have, like, everything makes sense. Honestly, I don't know if it's that everybody needs everything to make sense or people see an opportunity to make money. Yeah. And they're like, oh, why don't we explain that? Yeah.

It was like when they announced after Aquaman was fairly successful, they announced, like, the deep underwater deep, like, movie that was supposed to come out because they there was a a moment in the yeah. There was a moment in the Aquaman movie. Yeah. Where they go by and see what they underneath deep and there's like these creatures down there. And they're like, let's explain that.

And you're like, no. And that movie just yeah. That movie didn't make it because Stop. Yeah. But I think that's yeah.

I love when things are soft science or soft you know, like a soft boundary where you're like, you're giving me enough here. Right. Too much would be too much, and too little would be like, well, what the fuck is happening? But this movie fits that little, like, pocket of, like, yeah. You're giving me enough.

Yeah. Last point for me on this little subject. It's like I was saying about time cop. A movie no. But it's like a movie where I was like, yeah.

I do wanna say before everybody leaves, they all go after the lion. Literally, the relatives, the greasers, and you guys all grab shotguns, and the kids Right. Yeah. All grab shotguns Right. To go after the lion, and the greasers are now helping them out.

And before the greasers leave, Hub gives them the talk, which is The man's speech. Which Garth says is that the speech he gives Every man. To every boy becoming a man. Mhmm. Mhmm.

And now we've sort of got for Walter, he's got what he really what he wants to get. Yeah. Because he got a piece of that. And, like, the big thing that resonates constantly with Hub is we're getting more of the flashbacks too. It's the, like, I love this Jasmine woman.

Yeah. This love is real. That's the main thing you need to know. You know, be courageous. Be upright, be Honorable.

Yeah. Honorable. Yeah. And these things the only things that really matter in this world. Well and he says a beautiful line.

I'm probably gonna butcher it, but he says something to the effect of, like, just because someone, like, tells you it's true, doesn't mean it's not something that that's worth believing in. Alright. So I I just wanna read this because sometimes the lesson is what's important. When Walter gets what Tom tells him is part of the Tom. Mhmm.

Yeah. I wrote it down because it meant a lot to me. Okay. And I thought it was Good. I thought it was great.

It says, sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. Yes. Mhmm. That people are basically good. That honor, courage, and virtue mean everything.

That power and money, money and power mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil. And I want you to remember this, that love, true love never dies. You remember that, boy. You remember that.

Doesn't matter if it's true or not. You see a man and should believe in those things because those are the things worth believing in. Yeah. And I don't like I've got chills. I've got chills right now.

It's a that It's a great night. And you all do everything very well. This is part of the beauty of the editing of the movie. It's it does this, like, good, like, heavy, like, I'm gonna choose to live and I'll be your uncle, but, like, you need to listen to what I'm saying and be a good example of, you know, these beliefs and so forth. And then it just cuts to, like, a montage with goofy music and then, like, eating fucking pounds and pounds and pounds and pounds of corn.

Yeah. So much corn. So much corn. But a beautiful, like, night and, like, I and You gotta break that up. You do.

You gotta. You do. And you gotta you gotta have, like, sort of the whimsy stuff that that, like, leading up into this point, there's, like, some, like, goofy seriousness to this. But then you get that scene with Hub and Walter out next to the lake that they fill with their own fish. And then she, like, shoots Shoot them with shotguns.

Yeah. Shoot them with shotguns. And it it's also one of those things where it's like you never wake a sleeping sleepwalking person. Oh, yeah. Puts the the just, like, the duvet on him just to keep him warm or whatever.

And then he gives him, like, this partial talk, and Walter also asking about Jasmine. Like, what happened to her? Because there's there's so much mystery about this, like, one woman he's loved his entire life. He simply throws it away with she died in childbirth. Yeah.

Hurry and the baby. Which is I was like, Jesus Christ. Well, that's the thing. It's like he man, I agree with you. It's like he throws it away, but, like, can he throw it away?

No. Like, he's just too good to throw anything away even when he throws it away. It's increased. Amazing. Yeah.

And I think his back is to the camera the entire time. He's just looking up at the stars. Mhmm. She died in childbirth. Well, a common thing to happen at still in that point in time in the world.

Oh, because women weren't people still. Well, To be honest, we're about, like, a 100 years since women weren't, like, probably dying during childbirth. And that's what I'm saying is, like, it was this is very believable that this would happen because it would have been in, like, the forties or fifties or whatever. So this was still somewhat commonish place depending. Oh.

Oh. He's a Nicky cat man. I knew he was gonna show up in a fucking movie, but wait. Another one. Walter watches Garth go to the the barn.

Yeah. And the the money follows him. That's right. And he's finally sees some of the money. The money.

A lot of money. A lot of money. I don't think it's all their money. Not even even a safe. There's a safe down there that's open.

It could be a safe, but no. It's just all out. I almost borderline thought it was gonna be, like, spilling out with, like, jewels, goosebumps, like like chocolates and maybe, like, chocolate coins. Yeah. I was gonna say chocolate wrapped in gold.

But it was, like, it was when he goes down there, it's another one of those moments where you're, like, oh my gosh. But I actually love when he looks up when you think it's maybe gonna be Michael Kagan. Michael Kagan. And it's just all the dogs standing at it. It's very cute.

And there's a safe there, and you don't see Michael Kagan go, you didn't have to blow the bloody doors off. Yeah. Should've though. Yeah. Should've had that scene.

Yeah. Okay. Now it's Nikki Cat. Yeah. There you go.

It's Vega. So, Kira Sedgwick shows back up after she never went to this school. Sent a letter from Vegas that was just a bunch of fucking bullshit to her kid that he didn't even finish reading. Yeah. About what she's doing.

And she shows up with Nikki Cat randomly at the farm in the middle of the night. And Nikki Cat's a private investigator. Yep. A private eye shows him his badge for a quarter of a second in the whole deal to prove it. Probably not.

And they have this big story about how, oh, these guys are bad people. They sold us money. Numbers. Yeah. Which is which is interesting because you hear a portion of that version of the story from, like, a local.

So I think the thing that, like, really touched on to me is that, like, when I was a kid, I was lied to a lot because my parents were going through a divorce and it was messy and awful. You also mentioned Veggie Tales and things like that. Also the VeggieTale. Yeah. And I was deeply ingrained in religion that, I've since moved away from.

When you don't have a reliable parent telling you the truth or, like, even, like, a version of honorable truth Mhmm. It is so hard to discern as a kid what's really going on. Oh, yeah. And so when they show back up from Vegas and he's like, oh, no. These are these are bad guys or whatever.

It's like, oh, man. This is such a crowning moment of a boy about to be a teenager. Like Yeah. You gotta make this choice. I feel like the movie is gonna take this turn here as I normally do when we talk about movies where it's like the private investigator is gonna be like, we we have this evidence and then all of a sudden it becomes like a courtroom drama.

I didn't necessarily think that, but I thought it was gonna take some, like, funky turn. Could you have ended this storyline involved with the lion any better? Is there a few storylines throughout this movie? The story line for the lion Walter. Could this have been any better?

The lion attacks Nikki cats Yep. Because he's attacking Walter and hitting him. Passes away with a heart attack presumably. Hate the edit, but, yeah, the edit's weird. This was this was the moment where when I was watching the movie, I was holding my Rudy cat.

Oh. Oh, buddy. He was laying on my chest. Yeah. And when, Jasmine, the lion passed away, I just was, like, squeeze him a little harder.

Yeah. He's a little tired. I'm getting teary. Think of it. I this is where I got when he goes This is where he came.

Goes, she died happy. She died with her boots on. I was like, oh, you shut up you old fucker. I was like, don't you do it. I felt so I was so sad I was so sad about Jasmine, but I was Yeah.

Me too. But it made but it made sense. It did. And it was it was the sacrificial moment of, like, you know, like, there there had to be. And so it was nice to not see Robert Duvall or Michael Kain dying on screen.

Like, lovely to see that. Like Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And if they didn't shoot shoot the lion like they planned on.

When the when he finally his mom finally is like, we're gonna go We're taking you. And and he she tells the uncles that we're gonna drop Mickey Katz off in Vegas because he's a piece of shit. Right. Yeah. And gets in the car, and he's leaving his uncle's, leaving the farm, and learns pretty quickly that this guy is sticking around.

Yeah. Yeah. And he leaps out of the fucking car. The second he hears that bridge Yep. He opens the door and he looks down, and he just waits for it to end and he dives.

Yeah. He's like Lady Bird if you, like Yeah. Yeah. Straight up to the That's a rough issue. Didn't think of that until you just said it.

Yeah. He's like, fuck this. I'm out. Yeah. And the pair would be like, holy shit.

What the fuck just happened? Yeah. I I love when they have the confrontation too, and he's like, do something that's best for me. Yeah. Like, also, like, you don't fucking want me anyway.

Yeah. And those are those scenes that, like, only a kid, like, Hailey Joel Osman can deliver, where it's just like such a man, what a kid actor. Oh, great kid actor. Great actor. Yep.

Reemote like, him screaming and his voice breaking while he's screaming Yeah. At his mom is so gut wrenching for a family PG movie. Well, I'm just so happy. Katie. Oh my god.

Just to have the kid to your to to her's credit too, like, when just to have your kid to be like, do something for me for once. Yeah. Yeah? She's like, oh, for you, you wanna you wanna be here. Yeah.

Yeah. That's what you want. You wanna be with them. Oh, and that like, what a great moment. And he comes running back with and Look yonder.

Yeah. There's some changes around here. Like, I'm gonna you're gonna Yeah. Kids dictating the rules. You have to stick around at least till I get out of college.

You have to be alive for that. You have to be alive for that. Well, and they they finally found, like, each other. And I like the line that they say about the lion, like, Haley Joel Osment. She was a real lion there at the end, and Robert Duvall's like, yeah.

And it's like it's obviously like the parallel where they're also secondhand lions like she was in that whole thing. It's very Everybody's sort of like a a a discard type of thing, and, you know, the lion is a little bit more Robert Duvall and, like, used to be a big fighter and, like, amazing and whatnot, and then is kind of playing the passenger. Yeah. Yeah. And I think the fast forward into time and the uncles passed away in this, like, plane crash.

I don't know if I need it, to be honest. There's a lot of flashback here. Like, I would have been fine I would have been fine with just seeing the beginning there and then getting the end and knowing, like He's at, like, the funeral when it's over? Yeah. Something like that.

You know? Like, we understand to a degree after he goes back to them, like, oh, this is his family now. Mhmm. And that's, like, a big part of who he is. I don't know what we really gain from the the, like, flash forward stuff.

You know what I mean? You're talking about the Josh Josh Lucas stuff? Yeah. Apparently, what we get is a different ending than what they originally tested. Yeah.

We gotta talk about that, like, after we do you wanna do it now? Sure. I can do that. What was it? I don't I honestly don't know.

I just I read the I read this fun fact, but I I think they probably ended maybe when Haley Joel Osman comes back and it was just like, you gotta stick around or whatever. Oh, yeah. That because that feels like an ending. I mean, it does. And, like, I I guess Literally.

People didn't feel fulfilled with that ending. But they they said they reshot it, so I'm not sure what exactly it was. I guess I guess the only thing we do get is even though that it's a little weird is that the Sheik the Sheik's grandpa fun. Yeah. The brownpais.

It's a reaffirming that the stories were true. Yeah. That's what it's all about, I I think. Like, I do like the sheriff though where he says, went out with their boots on to echo the thing about the lion. Yeah.

And you could have had that line at a funeral or in almost any situation. And I do agree, like, the the sheik showing up is one of those, like, it feels like a studio shoehorn. Yeah. Where A little bit. But it It feels kinda forced, and it's just like I do wanna say though, the helicopter does say n 222 on it.

It's definitely supposed to be there. 22222222222. Sorry, Ben. This podcast has just been made so Paul can control me. That that makes sense.

I will say as much as I I loved either reading or seeing the movie of the life of Pi, the whole the throwaway at the end of, like, was it just a story? Or was it just what I, like, thought it was or whatever? Or was I hallucinated the whole time? I like that this story leaned in to the story aspect and brought the Sheik's grandson, great grandson back just to solidify. Yeah.

These were sort of ridiculously told stories, but they were real. And you get that sort of corny line. I was like, yeah. They really lived. That kinda sealed it for me where they committed to that cheesy corniness, and they pulled it off with good actors.

Yeah. And that's what that's what bumped it up to a 5 to me because I'm like, you can't pull that shit off today. It's true. I I don't know an actor set of people that could commit that hard, especially, like, for kids and get away with, like closest I can think of. And this is not even that is the Jumanji movies.

I feel like And I I agree. That's definitely one of them, but they kind of sacrifice heart, I would say, for jokes. Sure. Yeah. Because you've got a really good comedic cast Yeah.

With all of them. The big thing with this movie, I think, you just, like, touched on is, like, there there's a level of sincerity throughout, especially from, like, the 2 main actors and Hailey Jossman as well. But there's, like, a level of sincerity, I think, that carries through. There's some hokiness, and I agree. Like, there's a couple shoehorny things that aren't sincere, like the Sheik at the end.

Yeah. But, like, overall, I think you're right. Like, there's a level of sincerity that I think a lot of movies haven't had in a long time, especially, like, broad reaching. I mean, I I think about hook. Like Yeah.

Yeah. But another another class I mean, Spielberg. That is a great person telling a story to young people movie, at least for a portion of it. Yeah. Yeah.

I mean, gosh. We haven't had a story think of 1. I mean, other than Princess Bride, Hook The fall. The fall, secondhand line. I can't think of a super recent one.

That's funny. I didn't wanna look A week of their own, very similar story structure. Mhmm. Starts with a flash forward, ends with a flash forward. Notebook kind of is somebody telling a story.

Sure. Yeah. That's early 2 1,000 12. Right? I guess.

Okay. It feels right for me in my sort of, like, spectrum of movie ranking, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I recommend if you haven't seen this movie, I think you should watch it. Yes. Yeah. I I think it's a very charming, fine movie.

Okay. I was about ready I was, like, on the cusp of 3 and a half shotguns, and y'all both made, like, some really good points. But then Ben said hook. That's a movie I really enjoy. Benjamin.

And that, like, is just a little better than this for me. I'm gonna say the 3 in, like, a complimentary way though. It's 3 shotguns in terms of a Hard 3. Yeah. Hard 3.

That's my maximum. You know that. But the Soft 4 or hard 3. Hard 3 is the max. So the, you know, the princess bride is, like, you know, there's like nothing else like it.

But you can't help. Yeah. The fall, there's nothing else, but you can't help. I like this movie. I don't know if I'm gonna revisit it.

That was the other thing with Office Christmas Party. We're gonna come back to this at some point and ultimately decided like, yeah, I will. With this, I don't know if I will. If I do, at any point, when I log it, I will make it a 3a half. But right now, it's gonna go we're gonna go 3 3 shotguns.

That's bitch. That's bitch. I'm telling you, like, this is also a really fun spring movie or, like, going into summer movie for me. So I I I love watching this movie. We have it on Vudu, and I watch it all the time.

But it's also it it feels like a new beginnings type of movie. So but Mhmm. I will say you did get me when you reminded me of some of the puppetry of the lion. The lion. And that from behind.

And I I remember just being like, oh, yeah. That was cringy at best. So I I have to bring it down to a 4.7. I still think Sure. Okay.

Yeah. It's it's a fantastic movie in an era that had a lot of heart driven movies. And I I just feel like we don't see that kind of heart. I mean, yes, I agree. Jumanji is the closest thing we get to that sort of adventure.

Close, but Family friendly, you know right. It's not as it's not as heartfelt. Not as heartfelt. And I'd I'm like I miss that. Everything you're saying, Katie, like, rings true for me.

It's one of those things, like I think I said this kind of about Willow. I think it just, like, depends on the age or the disposition of the person where it's, like, if somebody came to me and they were I don't fucking know. Like, 12 or under, and they were like, oh, well, you're for, like, something fun and funny and whatever. It's like, yeah. This is great.

But, also, if, like, you're my age or any age, and you have an appreciation for acting in general or solid writing or whatever, if you're walking by and you didn't just start watching this movie from the very beginning, like, it's gonna probably catch you several times. Yes. It's just slown with good moments. Yeah. There's a lot of tear jerking moments.

Yeah. That too. Tear jerking Tear beating off. Off beating off. Actual jerking, crank it out.
