There's like this release after he said it. You you could feel it. You could see it. It was I didn't know how it was gonna come out and, like, what kind of phrasing I was gonna use until, like, it was, like, now is the moment. And Hey.

Yeah. What is the concept of the review review but when it's new new? Well, let me tell y'all. Please do, Paul. Oh, okay.

I will. I'm so curious. We take a movie that's 7 years old or older as well as a film that is much, much newer. Not like something that's, like, super, super new. Yes.

And it's either a sequel, a reboot, a remake, something involved. And this time around, what we're gonna do is, do what we normally do. Take the old movie, the new movie, and talk a bit about our experience, what our rating was when watching it. We're gonna discuss those movies and what our ultimate rating is at the very end. But this time, you get a double dose.

You double The new one You get a double dose. I'm so glad you did that. Hey. Does one of you wanna introduce the movie? Movies?

Sure, Burris. Since you were here with us for our last Nunu, what were the movies that we watched? We had the pleasure of watching the original and the remake of Roadhouse. Roadhouse. Roadhouse.

And I just wanna understand when you say we had the pleasure of watching, are you making those mutually exclusive for one movie or the other? Are you saying it's it's just one of those or both, or are you are we gonna leave the audience in suspense on that? Oh, we're gonna leave them suspense. I love that. Yeah.

Tension. That's what we're here to do. My biggest question about this episode, though, is we're doing this format and everything. Aside from everything, is Ben, how are you? Damn it.

I knew you were gonna do it. I was like Since I started ranting, I could tell I could feel you looking at me. I know. I was like, how can I cut into this? How can I cut into it?

You guys have been down there. For one day, Ben. Talk to me where you've been down there for 35 years. I'm a little tired, but I'm excited to be here to talk about these films with you, fine gentlemen. Paul, how are you?

You know what? I'm doing okay. Alright. I feel response. I I'd love to say all sorts of positive things.

I really wanted to go on a big fake tirade about how, the original on a 48 hour rotation really only watched it once. It wasn't one of those ones that I watched it twice. Like, with some movies that, watch mystery men. In terms of our guest that's here today. Yeah.

Oh, and somewhere somewhere somewhere. Yeah. Burrows brought us somewhere in time if you don't remember. So Every time he's very make sure to say, like, hey, I brought you content. You got content.

I mean, it was a good episode. It it is a it's one of the greats. One of the early great episodes. We really killed this segment lately, especially as we've just gotten more honest. We're just like, fuck it.

We're like, Paul's always like, I got some hemorrhoids. I just want you to be correct because you're talking about hemorrhoids. They have back problems, and they're serious. And they're not hemorrhoids, they're anal fissures. Sorry.

So That is my mistake. I'm not a hot, sexy doctor. Sorry. On a side note me. Burris, how the heck are you?

I'm doing alright. It's my it's my uncle's birthday. He passed in February. We had lunch yesterday with my aunt and which was really nice. And Yeah.

You know, it's good. It was just having good memories and stuff. So yeah. Yeah. We always on this podcast say, RIP, Todd.

Absolutely. People who have passed. Okay. Well, we've talked about how we're doing and how great we are at the segment. So good.

We're strong. Matt Foskett, save us. What are we watching? Oh. What am I watching?

All 3 of us went to the cinema. Kinda. Yeah. Well, we did together. Well, yeah.

What, I'm gonna let, you know, God take the wheel here. 1 of you 2. More like devil take the wheel. Thank you again. Mhmm.

That you double doosed it, douched it again. Good job. We saw, late night with the devil on Sunday. Saturday night. Today is Monday.

So yes. Saturday. I've lost the whole concept of time. Loved it. Yeah.

Had me from the beginning and didn't let go. Yeah. I think we're all just gonna end up talking about this experience. Why not? I mean, I'm gonna pepper in some other things.

But Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I feel like in the world of I I just love original horror content, and I just thought that this had such a unique glance. If people aren't familiar, it's a seventies talk show, and a girl who's possessed with the devil comes on, and there's, like, a mini exorcism kind of that happens. And that's like there's so much more that happens.

But Yeah. It David Demolchin is phenomenal in it, and it's just really well done. It's a it's a it's a well done, low budget, unique horror film. I really enjoyed it as we were leaving. I had said a couple times when he was addressing the audience to applaud or the audience is applauding that I almost started applauding.

Yeah. And partially because, you know, the it's not really like a narrative film. It's almost like an experiential thing. And I I feel like the thing that hit me the hardest, and I don't know if that was what the filmmakers are wanting to do, but you kinda feel like you're kind of, like, maybe backstage a little bit, but, like, an audience member or a crew member Mhmm. For this occurrence.

So it's just kind of fun. Again, it just feels like an experiential thing to me, which I love in horror too. Yeah. Yeah. It was very immersive.

They really held on to you're watching a talk show. Yeah. And they stuck with it the whole time. And it felt like it too, and it was it was great. It was great to see, we talked about this on our walk, David Demalshen get to play, like, a leading man Yeah.

Because he's such a character guy. And just to see him, like, take ownership of this role and really, I think, really fucking sing with it. I I think he's fantastic as well. The other thing I'm just gonna go right in, I started watching 3 Body Problem. I watched the first episode of that on Netflix, and I enjoy it.

I've enjoyed it so far. It's a mystery. I don't know the books really. I actually knew very little about it going into watching it. So I was like, let's see what this is about other than it's from the Game of Thrones guys.

Oh, great. Yeah. Just started that. Enjoyed the first episode. Probably keep watching.

We saw Ghostbusters. Frozen Empire? Frozen Empire. Thursday. And I love the Ghostbusters, so I was entertained.

They added there were too many characters. There were some that just from afterlife that didn't need to be there. It kinda muddied it, but the the creature effects and creature design, I thought was fantastic. And, you know, I I it's entertaining. I I laughed and it was it was fun, and it did feel like I think it would have made such an amazing 6 to 8 part miniseries.

Like, Showtime or someone picked it up and just did that because it really felt like they were trying to set up the Ghostbusters Incorporated brand where they can spread out and, like, that would have made sense for doing, like, something long form. And then all those characters would have probably been able to work out better. Do they just plug everybody into New York City and it just doesn't really It doesn't really make sense. Yeah. Got it.

I'm rewatching 30 rock. You just gave Paul a boner. Oh. I've been sweet. In the last several months, let's see.

I I've rewatched Parks and Rec, The Office, Community, and now I'm on 30 Rock. So I'm just hitting all of those. Can you can you believe that those were all on in 1 night? Yeah. I can.

I can. I lived it. No. I know we all did, but, like, we didn't know in the moment that that was gonna be, like, the heyday of of sitcoms, and they're gonna be pretty much down. I mean, there's great one great gems, but you don't get a block like that anymore.

Yeah. You definitely do not. Yeah. I think we're all watching this. So we'll probably hit on this later, but, x men, 907.

Hell, yeah. It's good. Yeah. I like it. Has episode 3 premiered yet?

No. Okay. We're all just kinda waiting for that. Alright. Well, hey, folks.

Watch that. And in case you've been misinformed or are a complete dipshit, the whole idea of X Men was to be, quote, unquote, woke, you dumbass. That was the whole thing. If you didn't understand that Magneto and Professor x are allegories for Malcolm x and Martin Luther King, what does he say in Tommy boy? I'll have Tom here come back and hit you in the head with a tack hammer because you are a fucking dumbass.

Just put it that way. So, yeah. It is great though. I agree. As we're talking about golden age sitcoms and stuff, really quick mini shout to US Ghost as well as UK Ghost.

Yeah. I really enjoyed that. And, Abbott Elementary. Oh, yeah. That has really grabbed me.

I've enjoyed it as well. Mhmm. Outside of that, I am watching something that's not like a Van Damme movie or something like that. I'm watching Palm Royale on Apple TV plus. And it's fine.

It makes me long for White Lotus. Okay. In a way, it it's got, like, a high society access to people with money and affluence and Who's that? Etcetera. It's it's got a great cast.

It's Allison Janney and Kristen Wiig and Leslie Bibb, Ricky Martin's in it. Former guest, Matt Yenaghiya's husband, has a pretty large role in it as well, playing Gray Man. He's great. Cass is fucking great. He's in, Good Place, Matt's husband.

He was the Australian dude with the cowboy boots. Oh. Yeah. No. It's a great little role.

I haven't seen that, I think, since the first time I was on or something. Good place for me is, like, there's so many holes. I've never sat and watched it all the way through because You gotta do it. I know. It's a solid watch straight through.

It's only 3 seasons. It deserves it. Okay. You're almost definitely correct. Palm royale, 2 episodes in.

It's like, okay. Cool. I'll give this, like, you know, 3 or 4 episodes. And everybody keeps telling me Apple TV plus has all the fucking great shit in terms of shows. So I'm gonna try to dig into that a little more than I have.

I haven't either. I I've I've people told me to watch Masters of Air, I'm sure, because I I really enjoy Band of Brothers. And what was the other one they did? The Pacific. The Pacific.

South Pacific one. Yeah. I enjoyed both of those, so I'm sure I I would I'm enjoying Masters of Air. Is it good? It's not it's no Band of Brothers, but I think it's interesting.

The whole, you know, pilots and the air everything they did to do in a plane during World War 2 is like, oh, it is terrifying. Yeah. That's a oh my god. There is a The Stood's almost collapsed. Someday I'll actually build a table or something.

Couldn't have been. The, the budget for this was 85,000,000. Oh. It opened on Amazon Video. Mhmm.

Mhmm. Stream for streaming, worldwide with streaming. Box office opening position, there's there's none. Can I, mention? It was streamed for 121.500 minutes as of this morning between when it dropped and this morning.

I mean, what the fuck does that mean? I don't know. A lot of people watch it. I guess. Or not a lot of people.

I don't know. I guess you can divide that number by Yeah. 2 hours and one minute and get the amount of viewers. Why don't they just they they can break it down. They can just say how many people watched it.

Yeah. Oh, they can see IP addresses and all that. They're like, oh, that's not enough. We'll just we'll just put it in there. The problem is they wanna see how how long you watch it for.

That's the biggest thing is how would how long does it grab your attention? Only the bullshit from Bezos. Yeah. We're just gonna we've changed we've changed our direction. Keep it up, boss.

Keep going. It was directed by Doug Liman who also did Edge of Tomorrow. Whoo. Live, die, repeat. The Born Identity and Go.

Writers are Anthony Bagarazzi, who did, The Nice Guys. Chuck Mondri, and then also Arlance Hill who wrote the original Roadhouse and Out For Justice. The cast is, Jake Gyllenhaal is Dalton who's you've seen in Donnie Darko and Enemy and most importantly Bubble Boy. Most importantly, yes. Yes.

Mhmm. This guy gets it. Daniella Melquier? Melquier. Melquier?

Melquier. Okay. Daniella Melquier, Ellie from, Fast X, the Suicide Squad, and Guardians of the Galaxy volume 3. I think she's great. Yeah.

I didn't realize it was her until I I I read this earlier, and I was like, oh, oh, she was the rat girl, the rat catcher. The rat catcher. Billy Magnussen, Brent, no time to die, the big short game night. I like him. Yeah.

Me too. Me too. Fun fact. On March 20th, Variety reported that Roadhouse could have avoided a streaming debut. Before production began, Amazon gave the filmmakers a choice, $60,000,000 budget and a theatrical release or $85,000,000 budget and a streaming release.

They chose the latter despite director Doug Liman vocally protesting and boycotting the direct to streaming release for the last several weeks. Wow. And he really went off, like, in the press and whatnot about this movie going direct to streaming and how he was portrayed, and he got the bullshit from Bezos. And, apparently, that's not what it was at all. He also claimed it was his best movie.

Yes. Jake Gyllenhaal's greatest performance. All sort a lot of things. There's a lot of hyperbole being thrown around these days. Yeah.

Yeah. Okay. Well, we all just watched this film. How are we gonna decide? Did everyone consume this?

I'm curious. How are we gonna decide who's oh, how do you mean how? You mean, like We all streamed it. Did everybody watch it in one sitting? Did you watch it in the evening?

Were you drunk? On your computer? I watched it on my Did it make you get drunk? I watched it on my Fitbit. That's the only way to watch this movie correctly.

Yeah. While I'm running viciously. David Lynch. Full speed. No.

I watched it in one sitting. Yeah? Yesterday. Yeah. Same.

I watched it on my couch on my big TV and Yeah? Yeah. I strategically watched this one first. I watched it early in the morning on streaming at home. I didn't really have to break it up.

Like, I did have to take a break at a point, but not for too long. But, yeah, I think I went and peed. But I was really determined to finish this, partially because when I decided to take that break, it was about 40 something minutes into it. And I was like, oh, this has been on easily for an hour and a half. No.

Not at all. Sanktel, Ruby. Sanktel, Ruby. And now, our feature presentation. Dalton this time Okay.

First off Yeah. His name is Elwood Dalton. Oh, like Elwood Blues? And they and they somehow made that name more white trash. Yeah.

So Dalton is his last name in this? It's his last name in the other one too. Yeah. Yeah. But it's Elwood.

They changed his first name. They changed up a lot of the names are, like, slightly different. Like, doctor Elizabeth or whatever. She's Ellie, Frank, the owner of the bar is Frankie. Anyway Double Deuce is a restaurant that you see a couple times that Right.

All you guys have. He he, he when he gets off the bus or when he visits the bookstore, the adjoining place is the Double Deuce restaurant. Obviously, there are spoilers. So if you haven't watched this movie yet Yeah. I'm not adding spoiler alerts this time.

Okay. I'm not doing it. A $121,000,000. He's a UFC fighter, who Yeah. Former.

You know, that's a big thing that actually doesn't really work for me. Yeah. Me neither. Is that not only is he just so fucking insanely impossibly ripped. My god.

And, I mean, good for him for putting in that amount of work. I used to be in pretty good shape, and it takes a lot of work hard, and it's unpleasant. Yeah. Then great job, Jake Gyllenhaal. Oh, boy.

I I guess, like, you know, if you get to party in the Doctor for, like, 2 months, like, shoot a movie where all your shirts are 100% from Dan Flash's. All of Jake Gyllenhaal's shirts in this movie, he spent his entire salary in this movie a day. They just have the exact styles that I like. Yeah. His shirts other than one time when he kills someone, his shirts are all outrageous, like, button up short sleeves.

Yeah. I will say for the movie's credit, it looks good. Like Sure. The visuals are pretty strong. Mhmm.

This location is nice. Mhmm. It's really shiny. It's very shiny. It is.

So I guess we can just start showing our cards here. Because, like, I don't understand if your idea is to remake the movie. You're base you're not remaking it. You're repackaging it. You're basically, like, taking the bones of it and being like, we can do better sort of is what it feels like they're, like, trying to say.

Sure. Do I mean, that's kinda what it feels like. Right? Like, why else do you do this weird backstory about the UFC thing? We can bring this story up to the modern age and and repackage it and yeah.

But you can't. You can't. I mean, you just can't you can't. Like Mhmm. Something so special about the original Roadhouse is that it's pretty clearly a satire of late seventies eighties action movies.

And westerns. And and westerns specifically too. Like Bud Bodacher, and Betcher. Like, old westerns, John Wayne shit, whatever. And this movie just it it's the thing, like, where that movie was just, like, an trying to honor those in a in a way, and an homage to those westerns and and action films and stuff like that.

This movie, like, the first scene, the first fight scene, and many fight scenes in the movie, it starts to people start to move, and then it converts to CG. Yeah. And that's something that's so beautiful about that original one is that it's people just beating the shit out of each other. Yeah. And in this one, it feels like it's even from the very beginning when he gets stabbed.

It's like, oh, there are no stakes here. I noticed the the yeah. I noticed most of the the the CG punching in that first fight with Post Malone. Yeah. Yeah.

That was just like the first connect to the face. It was, like, just, like, animated. And it was, like Yeah. Not animated. It's, like, what is going on?

The the scene I didn't notice it as much later on in the movie. Oh, I did. The jump like, the fight choreography is really like, the fights are really well, like, choreographed. Some of them are really cool. Just fucking shoot it.

Yeah. Just I mean, use the camera, and the fights are good. Just shoot them well and shoot them right, and you don't need to add in a bunch of CG to make them real. Especially if you're forcing me to watch Conor McGregor try to act. Yeah.

Like, at least just put a camera and let the man do what he does best, which is move and, like, show me how he moves. I don't understand that casting at all. I don't understand it at all. I don't really either. This is, like, the thing that again, about the original Roadhouse.

It's like the the guy who plays Pat the bartender. He was the lead singer for a punk band called X. Like, there's a former pro wrestler in the original one named Terry Funk. There's, like, famous, like, stunt people and whatever that are doing some pretty fucking incredible work. Yeah.

And in this one, you get somebody like Conor McGregor, who I will say, like, is this guy an actor? Is that his training? Is that, like, what no. Like, did he take an opportune an opportunity to make some money and get some exposure? Sure.

I don't fault the guy for it. Sure. I am there are 2 people I'm magnetized to in this movie when they're on screen. Conor McGregor at times, just because he's magnetic and I don't know what he's gonna do and I haven't seen him before. It's an interesting new thing.

And the other one is Billy Magnuson. Sure. From that first scene, he's the bad guy in this where he's on the boat, and they really want to establish, like, we wanna make sure, you know, that this guy, the bad guy in this movie, as well as the old movie are both just fucking insane. Yeah. They're both just nuts.

There is a narcissism involved. The the intro where he's getting to shave on the boat and how inconsistent the shaving cream is on his face. Yeah. No continuity. The whole, like, the whole thing of getting a fucking shave on a boat in choppy waters Yeah.

Yeah. And then just keeps on just like, just loosen your wrist. Yeah. Just just keep going. And then just and then blaming it on the, the person, you know, steering the ship.

The captain who he punches in the face? Yeah. I like Billy Magnussen. That was great. That was my that was like I was like, that's a great scene.

That's just it's funny. It's funny. And it shows how unhinged, like, and and entitled this fucking asshole hits. Yeah. I have a real problem with well, okay.

I have a problem in this movie, but I have a real I I I really actually have a real problem with the changes in the way that Jake Gyllenhaal plays this part. Not necessarily his I think he's a fine actor. You oh, god. Yeah. I think the writing of the character of giving him this death wish from the beginning with, like, the train situation is so it just it is so anti what the the original movie is about.

Agreed. And I think that that starting at that point, giving us, like, that's his starting point is him putting parking in front of a train. You're like, well, fuck. I don't I don't know if I actually care anymore. Right.

Because I we get it. And, like, if anyone's seen the original movie, as we all have, we all we all know that he fucking killed somebody. And so all these little dream sequences in the UFC were like, okay. We know where this is going. We know where this is going.

We know where this is fucking going. Like I'm gonna make the storyline really, really quick here. I'm gonna try to log line this. Okay. So Dalton is a former UFC fighter who stumbles into a job as a bouncer.

He is not a professional. This is not something he does. But because he was gonna fight Post Malone and doesn't and wins as a result because everyone's scared of him because people who fight know that this guy fucking can snap and kills people. And it's not a thing where it's like he's defending himself necessarily. Like the guy as it said in the movie, the dude that he kills in the UFC ring was fucking helpless.

He was a friend. Mhmm. And the main thing with this movie for me is there's a line that's said by one of the bad guys early in this movie is, you know, Dalton's main mission is to clean out this roadhouse to help the owner. Same same thing as the original movie. But this guy goes, have you been punched in the face too many fucking times or whatever?

And he's like, yeah. That's probably it. The one thing for that this movie does mildly effectively for me is become kind of an indictment on to a degree of professional fighting violent contact sports and CTE, because there are times where it's just like, oh, man. There's just something about this guy, like, in terms of the performance where it's like, yeah. He probably has been punched in the head a few too many times the way that I don't know.

But The casualness is how of how he Yes. He was trying to do a Swayze esque thing because Swayze is also, like, really just, like, calm. So he's just doing that, but he's also with, like, comedic lines. Like, it's like, was your bikes outside? And he goes out there and then, like, I just did it against you out here.

I'm like, alright. Where's where's the nearest hospital? Is there a hospital near here? 25 minutes? Okay.

Okay. We just wanna make sure you guys know where the hospital is. Like, he's like, it's a funny banter and he's, like, really calm. He's, like, talking about how he can, like, destroy you guys. Well and it's like, he doesn't it's not like a be nice no matter what.

No. Be nice. No. It's He's, like, a nice guy to a degree, but he is very eager to fight. Yeah.

He's And and the thing he does where he, like, brings everybody into the hospital, like, I did this to this guy and this to this guy and this to the oh, gotta go. It's like, we're fucking talking about Doug Liman here, which, like, is a kind of a character. Board identity Yeah. And made Edge of Tomorrow, which is borderline a masterpiece to me. And you cannot shoot fight scenes in this movie like Edge of Tomorrow.

You cannot. And that's the thing. It's like you can't over light it and have everything spinning like you're, like, fighting aliens and and, cover everything with, like, sand and alien creatures and goo and glowing things and whatnot. Like, you're gonna have to put everything in front of my face, and it's just like it's I'm just like, speaking of goo. Yeah.

Yeah. An issue I have with this movie is that all of the emotional stakes just feel tacked on at the end. You know? I mean, like, the ad, like, oh, he's sad. He's gonna he's always gonna try to kill himself.

Oh, he doesn't. You know? Like, that like, there's something about his past. And a lot of the information is just said to us rather than seen. First, I'm gonna go with the the the guy that he kills in the UFC fight.

The only reason we know this is because someone said it was that it was what it was his friend. But then in all the flashbacks that we see He, like, slaps him? He slaps, like, at the, yeah, The weigh in, he slaps him and is, like, unhinged there, and they're both, like, like, I'm gonna fucking beat you. You know? Like, they get all pissed off at each other.

We never actually we don't see it happen. Yeah. And we don't see the aftermath. I had to rewind that part because I was like, wait a minute. What did I miss?

Like, suddenly Right. We never find out. We like, we never see any interaction with the girl or the dad after the bookstore burned down until the very end of the film. And I'm like, these are these are core points of a movie that we should be feeling something about, and I just didn't. I was like, oh, I No.

I see. You're tagging this on and because you're just checking boxes. Yeah. It's like we did that. It's like you you touched on it.

You didn't do it. You Yeah. You know, you haven't taken us with you. There's the guy that that, runs the dock where the houseboat is. I was like, oh, is this gonna be our Emmett?

And then and then was like, oh, no. No. Okay. He's he's got he's got, like, 2 scenes, and I was like, oh, is this gonna be the like, we never see him again. Nothing ever happens.

I'm like, okay. What's the name of the the wrestler? The the the big guy you just said his name? Conor McGregor. Yeah.

Conor McGregor. Yeah. He's got giant shoulders. Yeah. Dude, built guy.

No shit. The only person he kills is the bad guy. That we see. Yeah. He caused mayhem, but yeah.

All he does is cause mayhem. There's this whole point where Gyllenhaal, the switch is flipped, and he just then he goes on he's like, now I'm angry. I was like, yeah. The bookstore burned down. You didn't really get us with that.

And the only other thing that I was waiting for was that, oh, he's gonna kill someone that we know, that we care about, and that's what's gonna just make sense. Happens in the original? Yeah. I was like, something's gonna happen that I'm gonna feel for as well, and then all of this is gonna make sense. And it doesn't happen.

McGarrie keeps coming back and just, like, fucking shit up, but doesn't do any real damage other than to, like, structures and Yeah. Hitting things with cars that he can't park? Yeah. Yeah. And and then he he kills the bad guy.

And I was like, oh, okay. Gyllenhaal, the one person I remember him murdering Yeah. Is a guy who seemed to be more of a a strategist for Billy Magnusson rather than an active participant Uh-huh. Or what have you, when Jake Gyllenhaal is like, you know, when I snap, I fucking kill people. And it's like, yeah, you've established that and whatever.

And it's just, again, like, it it has no impact on me. And everything feels very as you've said, Burris, like, it's like very tacked on. The the thing where it's like Conor McGregor gets called in by Billy Magnussen's dad and we never meet Billy Magnussen's dad. And Billy Magnussen whines about, like, I inherited my dad's crime business and, like, I wanna build a resource. That whole storyline was unnecessary with the money and the cops and all this stuff.

I was like Dude, the Joaquin Alameda storyline, the sheriff, I hate. I hate it. And it doesn't it doesn't do anything. Yeah. It adds nothing.

He takes the body that he, you know, he does their version of the ripping the throat out, which is the crushing, which I I mean, like, that's the breaking the bone and, like, crushing the tracheal. Like, that's that's pretty cool. Like, I was like, oh, I didn't care about the henchmen. They should have been a and should have been a much more known henchmen that that happened to. So we'd actually be like, yeah.

I guess there's the crocodile thing too, but that's like accidental. That's like a passive thing that happened. So then he he takes the body, puts it in ice, and then frames a cop by shooting. It gets over convoluted. I was like, just throw them in the water and let the gator.

I mean, by the end of this movie I'm gonna wrap it up here. Please. But I think by the end of this movie, for me at least, it just, like, it becomes generic. There's nothing Very. There's nothing unique.

It just becomes like any action movie made for streaming these days. Which is such a bummer. It is such a bummer. And, like, things in this that like, visuals where it's, like, the second they walked in the Roadhouse, I was, like, that's your that's what this place looks like? We're just doing, like, a reg it's a bar.

Big triangle? It's just a cabana bar. Big triangle? Yeah. And nothing improves in the bar.

The boat's gonna fly into the fucking just pull it down. It's I don't understand. Needed to kill that dude or try to kill that dude and fail. This movie, even the final fight scene Was dumb. It's like, again, just like have these these are 2 extremely fit, extremely capable people.

This is a very high budget movie. Do something other than just be like, bro, I just really wanted to fucking party in the DR, man. Just, like, do the CG thing. The things that they took from the original to put in here that just kinda just plugged in were just like you just you didn't do it in a way. You didn't you you touched on something, but you didn't do it.

Or you didn't make it different and make it better. You know, instead of a pool cue, it's a golf club. But he doesn't do anything with the golf club besides, like, slamming on a table and maybe hit someone in the face with it. Yeah. If this is your Jerry.

His mother jumped up proudly and shouted, that's my boy, which is amazing if true. Maybe I saw clips, and I always heard about it. But I don't think I actually watched it all the way through or, like, in any sort of function that I knew the story until November of last year. Okay. So not long ago. No.

Impressive. Most impressive. Yeah. It was just one of those things that, like, I started trying to find movies that I've missed that I know I needed to watch, and I started November and just, like, hitting up, like, you know, certain movies, and that was one of them. Okay.

Yeah. What would you have rated it? Like, you know, until you just rewatched it recently where we I know you hate reading things, but that's part of what we do. I know. I know.

We actually don't like doing it either. We're we're suckers to the concept. When I watched it, I really fucking enjoyed myself. Mhmm. So let's I'm really excited for the conversation.

Doesn't it? There's just so much good about it. And since I've seen Oh my god. Yeah. My my first watch and my rewatch are so close together, I'm just having trouble.

Yeah. I can imagine. So I'm just like, I'm gonna I'm gonna start with a 4 because I I wanna go somewhere. See where we go. I like this.

Great movie. I wanna give a quick shout to costume designer, Marilyn Van Straker, who does a fucking phenomenal job through this movie. Pretty much everybody does. I know exactly the first time that I saw this movie. It was in the summer of 1990 7.

Oh, wow. It was on TBS, the Super Station. Okay. My mom and stepdad at the time were still in bed. It came on at, like, whatever time at, like, on a Saturday afternoon, noon, or whatever it was.

And I was a latchkey kid and had noon, or whatever it was. And I was a latchkey kid and had parents that worked graveyard shifts and shit like that. And, holy shit did this movie grab me for a 1000 reasons. Partly Did you jerk off a lot? What's that?

Were you just jerking off at all the Partly because, like, I jerk whenever I see Neon, I jerk off. Oh, yeah. It's a weird thing that I have. There's a it's a disorder. It's electric.

It's called it it's electric jerk on. I've never taken you to Vegas. No. Don't do it. Don't do it.

No. Don't do it. Oh, my car. So Oh, my car? I drove I just drove by.

I don't stop. Oh my god. So I don't I try not to stop. I almost died. But I You're the husk of a man.

I was so hydration. Enthralled by this movie as somebody who I'm the guy on this program who largely is, like, fucking Stallone? Yes. Van Damme? Yes.

Schwarzenegger? Yes. Seagal? Fine. Like, so much of that shit.

And so this movie has always been there for for me as well as some of the people in my family that have or still or whatever associate with my family. There's a lot of things that hit super close to home in terms of this movie that make me feel seen. So I really love this movie. I rewatched it not right after the first movie, but, same day. And just felt so happy that I was like, I'm gonna watch the second one no matter what.

I may love the first one, but I'm gonna watch the second one no matter what. I watched this at Vidiots a couple months ago and rewatched it again. And it's gonna be really hard to shake me off of a 4. I'm at 4 Mihos. 4 Mihos.

It's just one of those movies that even if you have it on in the background, it's one of those movies that you're like, oh, shit. I wanna I wanna see I wanna re rewatch this part. But outside of the rewatchability, this is a really fucking well made movie that is shot by Dean Cundy. And a lot of the fucking time looks like an absolutely polished John Carpenter movie. Sure.

And that's high praise coming from me. Yeah. Is it my turn? Please. I went on and on forever.

So the first time I saw this movie was in college. It was freshman year of college. Somebody did you a service. Well yeah. So a teacher of mine, Rad.

His name is Bob McDougall. He is Oh. R I p. Right. He has passed.

He was our, our movement teacher. Burris and I went to college together and, fight choreographer teaching. Freshman year of college, we used to come in early to class sometimes, and he would be doing Tai Chi Awesome. In class. Yeah.

And, like, we'd just be, like, have to be quiet and just go, like, sit and, like, wait for him to finish, because we're like, oh, shit. We can't disrupt this. And I remember him telling me and a couple of my friends, in my class that we needed to watch Roadhouse, and we needed to watch Big Trouble in Little, China. Okay. Bob was a, stunt guy.

Bob Bob came from stunts. Bob did a lot of, stuff in film and a lot of fighting. Anyway, that's where he came from. So I remember watching this at my friend James' place. I think we rented it from Hollywood and pretty stoned probably.

And I remember digging it. I was like, oh, yeah. This movie is dope. I get why Bob likes this movie. This is this is, like, okay.

I totally totally understand. I didn't fully expect this. I love like, there's a trash movie or whatever that people call a trash movie that apparently But it's self but it's self relevant. It's self effacing a lot of the time. Yeah.

Yeah. So I think when I first saw it, I probably would have given it 3 and a half, mullets. There's a lot of mullets. So much hairspray, so much mullet, so bad. The so lethal, and the mullets.

I feel like I'm obsessed with hairdos. Most of my rankings are, like, wigs or baby wigs or Exactly right. And I watched this movie To Balding Man, I'm offended, but yeah. In in the rewatching, I actually watched it in 2 parts because I had to leave to go meet you guys, which I know we discussed, like, if I had said like, hey, guys, I can't make it tonight. I'm watching Roadhouse.

I would have been like, oh, yeah. Okay. It would have been like a total valid response. You would have made it in time for the movie. You just would have missed, you know Hanging out.

Yeah. Hanging out before But I also, I would have understood. Yeah. Totally. I would have forgiven you.

And I fucking enjoyed it again. And then I'm still sitting at 3 and a half mullets, but I'm I am ready to be I'm ready to be pulled up, if you know what I mean. Like, if you got punched and you fell down and wanted some assistance to get up, like, someone to grab your hand and get help you up. Or if I had, like, a pull cue and I decided to, like, wanted to do a flip onto the stage And dance around. And do, like, a pole pole vault back flip onto the stage, I would do that.

Or if you're, like, getting your head slammed into the ground repeatedly over and over and over again, you're you're talking about the section where we pull you up before we slam you back down. Just we'll just put you that part. Just just remember that pole vault, that pull queue, that goes into a body on the ground. That's what's using that's what he's using to for the levers. There are there are several almost impaling to that pull queue.

I I love, I think we need to start the God damn movies. I'm sorry. I didn't mean Real quick, no. We should. I'm gonna we're gonna start it and cut it off right there.

Okay. I love in a a movement based person was like, you need to watch this movie. Even when people aren't fighting, there's so much, like, in terms of the direction and, like, what actors are just choosing to do. Who knows? I didn't watch this with the fucking commentary.

But every frame in this movie, I I mean, a lot of that is Dean Cundy, who is an absolute fucking artist. And also, Swayze is a movement. Like, we saw it again. Yeah. We see it in Dirty Dancing.

But we see it in Too Wong Foo. Thanks for everything. Like, he is so specific in his He's a dancer. Like and you can you know it. Dude, he's so graceful.

Yeah. He has such command, as you said, over his body. And all shouts to Jake Gyllenhaal as we said. This is like that dude where you're like, yeah, man. When he's doing the Tai Chi, it's like, yeah, man.

Yeah. Like, that's the way to do it. Like, that's the way to go. Like, whether you look however the fuck you wanna look. I don't give a shit.

But when I look at Patrick Swayze in this movie, I'm like, yeah. And he doesn't look like that. He wasn't that tall. Right? Swayze?

I think he was a little shorter than me. Like, you know, like 5 eights. Yeah. But he but he comes off as being just the fucking coolest guy in the room. Dude, the fact that everyone says, I thought you'd be bigger, is just great.

And now, our feature presentation. The movie immediately starts with a Ferrari heels and a song that's saying, don't throw stones. Like, don't make fun of this. You can throw stones at glass houses. We're just having a good time.

And we're we're in a bar. Is this is this first bar in a city? I don't know where. He because his plates say New York. That's yeah.

Well, he went to NYU. Right? How long has he had that car? I don't know. But, I mean, even the hot pink font.

You know? It's so eighties. It's so eighties. It's, like, peak eighties, peak machismo, but, like, in a a very self effacing way, like you said. Yeah.

Just starting off with the the song that kicks in at the very beginning, like, I know the mood. Yes. Okay. Yeah. Sets the tone, like, really it's, like, gritty.

Just, like, settle in and just, like, let this even the dress that that girl's wearing that they're shooting from behind like, everything about the movie is just, like, this is loud. Mhmm. This is going to be loud. Mhmm. And shit immediately happens, you know.

I love it. $100 bill on the table. Nice. I always wanted to try you. Like the line that guy has before he cuts him is ordered to try.

You don't, and I think I could take you. Yeah. People come to this bar, and they just they get hammered, and they stare at the the dude with the mullet. And they're like, I could fight him. Yeah.

That's what they do. I could beat that guy in a fight. And then I gotta tell you, I got really good ideas. That's what they do next. Like, I wanna tell you how I'm gonna fix this country.

Yeah. Those guys. We've all met those guys at the bars. Right? These types of guys.

It's great when, like, Dalton gets cut. It establishes, like, really early on, like, he has a medical kit with him. He's suturing himself. Yeah. And the guy's, like, the owner of the double douche.

What'd you say, Bruce? Oh, he's used to this. Yeah. This is the thing that, like, this has been this is his normal life. Yeah.

The owner of the double douche comes in and says, like, I want the best. And immediately, what we don't have in the original movie is a or in the new movie, pardon me, is a Wade Garrett. Mhmm. And he says, Wade Garrett's the best. Wade Garrett's getting old.

I want you. What that whole deal. I don't know why they cut that character in the new one. Me either. It's such a pivotal part of the movie.

For them to bring someone in. It's it's so important. And, like, Jess has always said Jess says this about Jodie Foster. Like, whenever we watch something with Jodie Foster in it, she goes, I just I just trust everything Jodie Foster says. I just, like, wanna follow her.

That's me with Sam Elliott. Exactly right. Anytime Sam Elliott opens his mouth, I'm like, I just trust everything he says. I want him to be my teacher, my mentor, my my my my pal. Don't let it be home.

That's why he's the, the voice of, beef. It's it's what's for dinner tonight. That's why I eat so much beef. I just there's chemistry. You know?

A lot of people say chemistry, and they're referring to, like, sexual or intimate chemistry between characters. There's a chemistry between Sam Elliott and Patrick Swayze. There's a there's a huge chemistry between Patrick Swayze and Kelly Lynch, for sure. Sure. But also with Sam Elliott as well as I think I've said this about Jane Seymour and a couple other people where they're just like, I can have chemistry with people because I can fucking connect with people.

And I feel like Swayze was one of those people. Like, even when he's talking to Emmett, you're like, yes. This seems like an earnest person. Yeah. Jeez.

And, like, unlike the we'll get back in order here. But, like, unlike the new one, it didn't need to this one just peppered in backstory. You know? Right. We find out later that he killed somebody and, like, there was things that have happened in, like, Memphis and, like, they have a past.

But we don't need it spoon fed to us. We're not fucking children. Well and the other thing too is this isn't the Jake Gyllenhaal thing where he, like, falls into a job. This is what this guy does. Yeah.

And so in, like, a tri state area, he may be, like, known, especially if it's like, oh, yeah. This guy, like, fucking killed a guy. Like, don't fuck with this guy. The Wade Garrett's missing and also the Jeff Healey's missing. Another person who's like, I've known this person for years.

He's my friend. He's a likable guy. He knows who I am, what I do. Like, it's established that this person isn't, like, this alienated psycho. Yeah.

He doesn't wanna fight people. It seems like bar owners talk about this guy and 2 other bar owners. It's like, oh, you need help? Get this guy, and he'll he'll he'll make your your your sweetie. Reality show is that a reality show?

Bar rescue? Yeah. I am waiting for Swayze to pull out. Like, I also brought you Tapper, our POS system to, like, charge me a fridge. And then, like, rub grease off of the side of the bin and be like, this is the grossest kitchen I've ever been in.

Roundhouses it. It falls apart. It this that's the first I thought you'd be bigger was from the bar owner. Yeah. He was, like, hiring this guy and, like, ready to pay him even in today's standards a a a decent little penny.

5,000 up front. Yep. 500 a day in all medical expenses. Not bad. What you said, I get that kinda, like, clues me in a little bit to this world.

It's like, yeah. Maybe, you know, in this world of they're in Missouri. Yeah. Jasper, Missouri. And, like, maybe in this world where you have, you know these are road houses.

They're called road houses because they're, like, long stretches of road and then there's a bar. And, like Right. Like, there's not a lot else in town. Right? There's the mechanic.

This is the place everybody goes in town. This is where you hang out. People talk more in those communities. Like, there's more there's more of a community than there is, like, a city. Right?

Correct. I could I can buy that. Maybe someone who, like, has saved bars from becoming just, like, crime lord hangouts or whatever Yeah. Has become famous. The also, like, the introduction of the Mercedes.

Like, the thing that Dean Cundy does here, like, you see, like, the kind of busted out neon sign of the garage, and it, like, comes down. And he shoots the car so beautifully. He shoots it like the Batmobile. He really does. That's a good one.

Reveal and everything. You're like, oh, this is his Batmobile. Yeah. He goes and decides, I'm gonna go check out the double douche after he says, like, I'll show up when I show up, which apparently is, like, the next day. Like, 2 days later.

However long it takes him to drive there. Yeah. Very quickly. Yeah. He he was fine to leave the other place behind.

But it seemed like he had trained those That place was in good hands. I mean, you saw, like, even from kicking up the the knife dude, let's go outside. He's like, yeah. I'm gonna oh, I can't wait to fight you now. And he just, like, walks out there with the entire staff Yeah.

Just right there, throws him out. I'm like, alright. Let's do this. And he just turns around and closes the door. He doesn't wanna fight?

And that's what Yeah. What I really appreciate what you brought up is a big difference from this one in the first in the new one is that he's at peace. He's found peace with well, he's finding peace within himself. He is a cooler. Like, that he's not only a bouncer.

He is a cooler. But it's about him. Right? Like, he that's why he does Tai Chi. Right?

It's to bring himself centered. And we don't need to jump to fighting in order to draw people into this movie. And even those jokes that he throws out say, oh, what are you gonna hide behind, like, the 7 dwarves? And it's even just like dumb lines like that. Then I'm like, that's great.

That's like what some bonehead like me would say in that situation. Mhmm. The one liners and, like, weird shit that people say at times is like, oh, I feel like I've said or heard something like this in life. And it and it really gives you an eye into Dalton's character immediately from the get go. You somebody fucking cuts his arm and he's cool.

Yeah. Takes him outside and just turns around. Well, and he does it flesh wound. He can suture it. And he does it effortlessly.

Yeah. Yep. And I think that is an I I know it. We did this last time too with Nunu. We can't stop comparing.

But as much as I enjoy Jake Gyllenhaal as a actor Yes. Of course. There there are I think you said it, Burris, where it's like he's putting on the persona of a nice guy. Like, he's like, hey. How you doing?

But you can tell, like, this guy wants to fucking punch you in the face. Mhmm. I never feel like that at the beginning of this. I feel like Swayze knows that he's like, I know I can beat you up, but I'm not even gonna do it. I'm just gonna get you out of here and move on with my night.

I'm not I don't need to prove anything. Yeah. I'm not nice. I, Dalton, I'm not nice, but I'm going to be nice. I'm always going to be nice.

Yeah. And that's the thing. That once he's not nice, that's a different fucking person. Like, because he gets pushed to a completely different edge. So we're we're nearing the end of act 1 here, which which ends just about in the 21 to 22 minute mark of the movie.

But when the dude says, like, you ever see a better pair of attitudes about, like, the chick's boobs? Oh, yeah. So when he he goes into the road, he goes into the red double dupe and just stands and watches and Yeah. Just gets he's like, hey, what are you drinking? And he's like, coffee, black.

Yep. And he just stands and just watches this bar that has a cage all the way around the stage. Beer bottles thrown at it. Constantly. Yeah.

Constantly. The beer bottles fantastic music that's happening. At the bars that I would be at, one beer bottle thrown, that's a situation. In this Oh, yeah. Of course.

Like, beer bottles are just casually thrown. No problem. The band stage has a cage around me. It's this is. And there's a blind guy playing music, and people are, like, ridiculing him and shit.

They're just, like, these are nasty people. Question is, how much do those beers cost that they can waste to throw them? Yeah. What's up with inflation? Thanks a lot, Joe Biden.

Completely Joe Biden's fault. But Dalton buys this fucking beautiful 64 Buick with clamshell headlights and, like which is apparently everybody refers to as, like, a piece of shit and a bumpkin. To his other car. I guess. I I'd rather have a Buick, to be honest with you.

That thing But you can see that he, like, he goes and he knows that when he he's gonna pull up to these places like, he's done this before. Right? Like No. Yeah. So he knows, like, his car is gonna get the shit going.

Does for a living because people are gonna stumble into this. He's gonna piss people off, and people are gonna be, like, like, fuck your car. Just to backtrack. Just for a second. Do it.

The $10 a kiss. Yeah. On each So each wheeler. Guy's reaction to that, like, $10 a kiss. And he goes, are you kidding?

And his face, how it contorts to that response. And his friend is like, do it. Do it, man. His face said, are you kidding? It's hilarious.

And then the nice guy is just awkward. He's like, woah. He's like, are you gonna kiss him a little bit? $20. It's a great line.

And then, like, the huge fight breaks out. Yeah. And Terry Funk is, you know, throwing everybody out and being an asshole or whatever. Did anybody notice the address on Big T's Auto Sales? Was it country crazy?

It's 242222. Oh. That's the end of the first act. I mentioned this before we recorded. It's like, you can almost put a fucking timer on first act, wraps up in, like, the 21 to 22 minute mark.

3rd act starts with 21 to 2 22 minutes left. It's like whole like, the the way it's written, edited is like Holy shit. Jesus. It's wild. When he observed in this bar, there's, like, the bouncers are corrupt.

Some of them are, like, selling drugs. Yeah. Stealing drugs. And one of them just is a straight up asshole and has no and when he takes over, he comes in and he's all the bar according to Frank, owner of the bar Yep. This is the man that you he is now in control of day to day bar operations.

Mhmm. And his first thing to do is, like, alright. Dude, you're fired. You don't have the you don't have the fires path to bartender rage. He wants skimming.

Yeah. And then, yeah, fires the drug dealer. And then, yeah, he sees the guy skimming and fires that dude. And he cleans up he's trying to clean the place up and get a staff in there who he can trust. Well, I'm gonna back up half a step.

Sorry. Well, you should back up and punch. We meet right? Back up and then pop. Emmett.

We meet Emmett Yes. Who Dalton rents out the farm loft from. The super nice loft. And it's a $100 a month so he stay in the good graces of the Presbyterian church. That place is so nice.

So nice. It's phenomenal. Oh, fuck. Like, $100 A month? A month?

I would kill Oh, for that. Oh my god. A $100 a month. You can stay in the fragrance of nature. A space like that.

You probably get a lot of barn spiders. Yeah. Emmett is so fucking likable Yeah. Through this whole thing. That's another thing.

It's like, I like Emmett. I like, Jeff Healy, the blind guitar player. I like All the side characters are good. Sam Elliott. Like, I like all his friends.

I loved I loved Emmett from the moment their first conversation. I was like, this guy's great. Is this the moment where he says where he wants to charge him the $100 a month and, Patrick's ways? He's like, well, as long as it keeps you in the good graces of the church. And Emmett says, isn't it strange that money seems to do that very thing?

I was like, oh, this guy's great. Well, and this On board. And this loft has a view of this, like, mansion across the lake Right. With, like, this manicured lawn. Yep.

And and the the he buzzes the tower with the helicopter. Brad Wesley's pilot. He will immediately know this guy is a dick. Yeah. Yeah.

Immediately. It's very clear. When I love the proximity, it's like, sure. Right across the lake. Sure.

Yeah. Why not? I love it. Dude, the way that the this movie is about these 2 fucking guys just taunting each other and escalating it through the whole movie I mean, isn't that a awesome. Isn't that a lot of westerns?

Like Yes. It's just like come into our town, help us, and then they, like, you know Three amigos. You meet the bully of the town. Walking Tall. Yes.

That's a good Joe Don Baker movie. I'm not gonna talk about the other one. He has that first day. He fires a bunch of people, and then it's his first night. And the point where the the guitar player, when Jeff Healey says, the name is Dalton.

And everybody's like, oh. That's where I'm like, is this a parallel universe? That's what I mean. Oh, and the band seems to know him. From, like, playing other bars, I guess.

Yep. So, like, Dalton, he's like Madonna. He just he just has one name, and everyone knows who he is. Yep. And, he gets all his tires popped and shit.

What were you gonna say, Boris? Oh, you fuck with him, he'll seal your fate. I actually don't hate that line. Yeah. Mhmm.

I don't hate it. It's weird, but I don't hate it. It's delivered well. There's all you need to know about Dalton. You fuck with him, he'll seal your fate.

There's things in eighties movies I feel like are just more palatable. Yeah. I also yes. I also just feel like Sam Elliott and Jeff Healy, who does a pretty fucking good job in this movie, who's not an actor as we're talking about a guy who's not an actor newer one. I don't think any of us like that performance.

I like the performance of this guy who by profession is not an actor. He's a musician, but he does a decent enough job. It's so charming when he's like, blind boy play guitar or whatever. And he goes, you know, I thought you'd be bigger. Like, they feel like old friends.

It feels like very genuine. Yeah. But Dalton replaces his tires on the Buick because he has he has these at the ready in the trunk. This happens all the time. He's gotta change his tires because he gets slashed.

But right across the street from the bar is a is a is a mechanic shop. Right? Yeah. He goes after you know, we see Patrick Swayze's morning buns. I mean, it's like a full on Swayze.

Like, if there's, like, a storefront where they can buy, like, regular stuff too, I think. Is it just a storefront? Why? Well, he has, like, sodas and stuff there. Yeah.

He's got, like, he's got, like, a little store. General store. Yeah. Well and before my maybe my favorite part of the movie. So in the new one, we're it's inevitable.

This is gonna happen. Oh, yeah. We're gonna keep comparing. But Ben Mendelsohn, it's like so or Ben Mendelsohn. Holy shit.

Billy Magnusson is I'll keep that in. Is getting the shave, and it's like very unhinged. Right? It's really fucking crazy. Yeah.

Brad Wesley's version of that is like, I own this town. I can literally take up the whole fucking street if I want. And he's just like shaboom shaboom. Yeah. Like, Swayze, like, they're literally their paths are intersecting.

Yeah. Like, they're coming to it's it's happening. What's the first movie when you think of that hear that song? This one. Shaboom shaboom.

I can't I know I to say it, I'll I'll know what you're To me, it's clue. Oh, that's Oh, that's a really good I love that movie. That's a really good movie. Now we're at the Red's Auto Parts store. I wanna have a I just wanna say something about Leslie just because he is the villain, but the way he shows it, you're saying, like, he's entitled, therefore, he's dangerous.

Yes. And that's you can see that just in the car swerve itself. Yeah. The car swerve and when he shows up at the auto parts store in red or, he says, beautiful day, isn't it? Red's like, was.

And you can tell just by the facial the exchange and the way that Cundee shoots it and the way it's edited that, like, this guy, Jimmy, this is the bad guy. He's the he's Biff Tannen. Yes. It happens so quickly. It's so clear, and it just happens in a beat.

He's also gonna kick the shit out of everybody in this office. I really loved how he held himself when, like, the knife is happening.

Like, his arms are, like, going like, curve. He knows he's gotta get cut. And Yeah. Yeah. He was he was very nice.

The fighting the fighting in this movie is great. And the The way he moves. I Swayze just moving just on his toes and dodging and stuff there is just he's a fucking dancer. It's so You see him jump in the air. Oh, yeah.

Arms out, knees up, you know, and then even his roundhouse kick, there's so much It's all about raining. Yeah. He throws his body into his foot, like, in at the right spot. And it's all about avoiding gets it. It's all about avoidance.

Not here. Where's Wade Garrett? Finally, we've met the doc. He's got pain don't hurt. He's gotten the staples.

Yeah. Harry's the doc. Medical records with him. In the doc. Fuck.

They're just they go I don't know. I think they've been on one date. Then Wade Garrett shows up. There's that fight that happens. Yeah.

And that's when we see picnic dress, dog dress show up. Oh, yeah. She's she sees him fight. Yeah. Yeah.

Yep. Wesley's guys show up to, you know, fucking Trash the place. Trash the place. Mhmm. They're just trying to incite him.

Oh, yeah. They're trying to break him. Yeah. That's all like, that's their whole, like, motivation. It's it's the way they escalate from helicopter to car to the auto thing to, like, the way they escalate the way that Brad Wesley is trying to piss him off makes sense until there's one point where I'm like, oh, man, you broke it a little.

But overall, it's really good. But the the doc and and Dalton go on the date. And this is where there's that echo that I like in the new one where the doctor says, look, I know you're not a nice guy in the new one. Yeah. As well as in the original where Kelly Lynch is like, I know you're not a nice guy.

Like, don't tell me what I want or what I'm interested in or it it's it's hot. I like that. She's like, look, you're kind of you're kind of a fucked up dude, and I like that. Yeah. They're both hot.

We're gonna watch them. When we watch them fuck, it's like Dude, that sex scene is hot. It's hot. It's very hot. Yeah.

And there's It's not awkward. To no nudity in that scene. There's a lot of nudity in this movie. It's not as awkward as the sex scene in Top Gun. And that's one of the things.

Yeah. When Wade and Dalton are together in the car, and Wade's like, I thought you said everything's alright. And Dalton's like, everything is alright. And then the doc comes out, and Wade's like, goddamn it. Like, everything's not alright.

Like, your phone like, damn, I knew there was fucking a woman involved. Yeah. And we find out very quickly mostly because fucking Red's place gets blown up, the auto parts store and whatever. Oh, that was so cool. The great practical explosion.

Yeah. Yeah. But and the fact that we see it. Yeah. Oh, we see it.

We see the whole thing happen. We see the urgent We see Ren's response to it. We see the aftermath of that, which then goes into Wesley being in the bar. Right before Ren's Place. The what, the doc and Wade and the dancing scene and dancing scene.

He's so fucking charismatic and so likable and the whole thing. And when he explains Dalton's backstory, and he's like, hey. You didn't know she was married. You're still the good guy. Yeah.

She never played. Pulled a gun on you. You're still the good guy. Yeah. Like, you can do 2 things.

You can get shot or you can kill them, motherfucker. Mhmm. And it's like and he killed them. And it's like, oh, Dalton again, still Foreshadowing. The good guy.

As well as Wade Garrett at a point when he says, I'll sleep when I'm dead. But I think what's important there, though, is that Swayze is still at odds with that. He doesn't consider himself the good guy. Nope. He and I think that's important to He's an antihero.

That he but he but he recognizes that there are 2 wolves inside of me. You know? Or, like, he recognizes that he he needs to, like but, yeah, he recognizes that he because he can't recognize yourself as the good guy because it's like that there's nowhere to go then. Right? So He's very conflicted.

He's a fucked up dude. Yeah. Like, this keeps unpacking itself. But he's still, like, to us as the audience, he's still the good guy Yeah. For the most part.

I mean, an antihero, but but you were saying, Barissa, we got back to the bar, and now fucking Jackie Treehorn's there. Yeah. Yeah. Because this is this is this is the night before the whole all through the night with, with the doctor and Sam Elliott dancing and then that backstory. The night previous was when Red's barn blew up I think it's and Wesley's end of the And we know that Red's and then the pool cue.

Something like that. Yeah. But Red's niece is is the doctor. They're related. But yeah.

So they go to the never addresses anything. The bar and Brad Wesley is in the bar with all of his henchmen drinking. Yeah. Play something with balls. Good thing for the firefighters that were there.

Like like, the fire like that, you you, you can't do anything about it. The place is a dump. Yeah. Maybe you should put it out with their piss. Everybody around knows that he's the one that did it.

Yeah. And then his girlfriend that he beats up does like this dance, and then Jimmy does it a little dance with the pool cue now. Yeah. It's like the like, your ass is mine. And he means that literally.

And Jimmy's a In fact, we find out later. Jimmy's a real fighter. Yeah. Yeah. Like that guy can fuck shit up.

So Kicks Sam Elliott's ass in in At a point. Yeah. I mean Like, that's what yeah. Because, yeah. Swayze had to step in.

Enough of that, like, fight me now. It's the thing that the new one doesn't have. There's a business meeting with all these businessmen in the town, and they bring Swayze, and they're like, you made Jackie Treehorn afraid. And he's like, I fucking didn't. Like, we find out later that this guy just if as soon as he gets the chance, he'll fucking shoot anything.

Yeah. So, like, he's a complete and total narcissist, and the Ford dealership thing with that goddamn monster truck. You got insurance. Right? The Tacoma Dome.

Yes. You got it. You have health insurance. That was a great return to that because he just tells out the red, like, you got insurance. Right?

And it's a back to him. I mean, the street is just doing shit to show that he is untouchable. Yeah. He has power. He's entitled.

He's you know? And and the cops clearly don't exist in this world. So No. Well or they're bought off or bought off They mentioned they mentioned he owns the cops. Yeah.

That's right. To do so. That's all I have to say, so we don't that's why we don't do it. We don't need to do another side story about To the exposition. The police being owned.

Paying attention. We get it. So when Swayze, and Sam Elliott are are meeting and Swayze's training and he's fucking incensed. And and Sam Elliott's like, let's get the fuck out of here. We'll be gone by dawn.

Like Yeah. I I love you, Miho, and catches Swayze's fist. And that's the end of act 2. Like, you know what? We're gonna get the doc, and we're gonna get the fuck out of here.

Yeah. Mhmm. And the the the doc pleads with Patrick Swayze about you need to leave town, whatever, and Patrick Swayze is still incensed. This is the thing where it's like the escalation doesn't make a lot of exact perfect sense. So you sent Jimmy to blow up Emmett's house rather than sending Jimmy to blow up Patrick Swayze.

I think What's the logic there? I think Jimmy just got confused. Like, no one's staying in this barn. He's gotta be staying in the house. I mean, maybe.

I feel like watch him fuck. I feel like a big Just just Brad. I don't know. I feel like a big part of it is they want to torture him before they kill him. Yeah.

That's what I typically I agree too. From that is, like, they're, like, we're just gonna make you suffer. We're gonna we're gonna kill everybody that you love about. People around you, and then we're gonna kill you. Because that's the best way because we know we can.

And I think that that's what is ego that someone who has no, like, to It's a movie. It drives the story forward, but it's like, well, if you wanted to kill this guy Sure. Like, if you really wanna get rid of him, but maybe you don't. And that goes to one of my favorite shots in the film is because then Jimmy's riding off on, like, a 4 Runner or, like, a bike. A motorcycle.

Motorcycle. And Swayze is running to, like, cut him off and then jumps in the air and does, like, hands out, like, perfectly straight, knees curled up, and just, like, this perfect, like, dance jump, and then just, like, tackles. Tackles him. It's so good. Undershot of him, but and it's a form.

Look at his form, and then he I just love Jimmy's laugh. Dude. So arch. It's so good. He's so good in the in that moment.

Like, the the actor who plays Jimmy, Swayze is great. Michael Kamin's score, like, just starts fucking pumping at this point. I'm so glad Emmett was okay. Yes. Emmett's fine.

And Dean Cundy shoots the absolute shit out of this fight that took them 5 goddamn days to shoot. Yeah. It is really good. Yeah. And there are points where those 2 men not only are improvising the fight, but they are hitting and kicking each other with force.

Yeah. Swayze, had to have his knee drained and shit after this as I mentioned. Like, they went all the way out. And I in my opinion, it's all there. Like, there's a part of me that, of course, wants to be like, this is like the They Live fight, speaking of Keith David.

This is ridiculous. Oh, yeah. But a bigger part of me is like, no. Keep going. Keep going.

Keep going. Keep going. It's so good. The fight's coming. And then we get the final A throat rip in there.

A throat rip, which they had talked about earlier. Yep. And his It's established. He's dead. Dude, Jimmy's dead.

Oh, yeah. And the doctor decides sees him checks on him first. To show us? No. But I appreciate that because sometimes people just walk into movies and they're like, he's dead.

They just look at a body. I'm like, how do you know? Yeah. That's what a doctor would do. She would look at him.

Mhmm. And he drags it into the lake and just yells Flashlight. Wesley and just Wesley. Throws the body. And just, like, pushes it towards the house, but it'll just flow to over to you.

Oh my god. After the moment of I used to fuck guys like you in prison. And when he pulls a gun on Patrick Swayze, he says, I'm gonna kill you the old fashioned way, which makes no sense. No. In terms of shooting him, and I don't think I can.

And and recalls right back to what Sam Elliott said. He had a gun. You can either stand there and die, or you can, you know, kill him. Motherfucker. Yeah.

Yeah. It's, we go full dark knight. It's Wade or it's the doc, and it's gonna be a coin flip. We don't know how this turns out, but this is the way that Brad Rachel. Wesley is deciding this.

He's gonna flip a coin and he's gonna kill one of them. Yeah. But Wade shows up at the bar. He's fine. We're gonna go get the doc.

Slightly beat up. He took care of 3 guys. There were 3 of them. Yeah. But he did okay.

He tells him to stick around, have a drink, I'll come back. Mhmm. And even though he's murdered this guy somewhat in front of this doctor, but definitely, she's like, I'm pretty sure I know how that guy's throat got ripped out. Yeah. It's like, hey, I'm going to come to your work in my karate gi and rip you out of your, doctoral x-ray examinations Like, we're weird.

So we can get out of town because I love you. Yeah. But I will never say that. But because I'm a psycho. But also we might die, so we should go.

And this is weird. You're a danger. Swayze really kills this. It's great. And they do the great foreshadowing of the I'll sleep when I'm dead doc with Wade.

He's been stabbed in the back. It was tails. Quick quest. Quick quest. And the blood rose.

Was the doc the doc used to be married to Brad Wesley? They used he had a thing for her. Yeah. He wanted That's as far as we know. But so the so the person for blood.

So the person that she was married to wasn't was someone different. That she says, like, I used to be married to the wrong guy. You know what? It could it could have been, but I know the the only way anybody says in an exposition is Okay. Brad Wesley had to think about it.

Different people. Yeah. And he doesn't like to lose. I'm so I'm so curious why they didn't make a similar choice in the new one. This is why I gave it 4 stars.

There you go. But, no, like, in the new one, I don't know why they didn't make that why didn't they make the same choice? And when it, like No. They did a connection with the sheriff Oh. Paying the dad rather than that.

Yeah. Barsh. It was But, like, remove remove the whole, like, resort, remove the sheriff, and and just make it cock of the walk Billy Magnusson owning this small island town as a crime lord. Mhmm. And this dude walks in, and now he's now not only did he beat the shit out of some of his dudes, he's now dating his ex or the girl that he fucked once and wanted to marry.

That immediately, I'm like, sure. I get the, like, gentrification storyline and all this other stuff and, like, inherited wealth from his dad and all. Like, I think I get what they're going for. But it's so much better if he's like, yeah. I'm a new money crypto bro, and I'm doing this.

Like, that's that's what I'm saying. I want. And then put in put in the the doctor who used to who he's got the hots for, and this guy has her. And suddenly, I'm like, okay. I buy it.

Yeah. Yeah. Well You wanna kill that, dude. We're pretty much down to the final fight because the only thing that's missing is grass. There's one thing I wanna go back to before we go into the finale because of our sponsor tables.

Oh. So one, he gives the employees the rules. Yeah. Be nice. And then and they're like, when till you're not nice.

It's like, when are we not nice? I'll let you know. You keep being nice until I tell you. And then he lets a bar a fight breaks out in the bar, and he, like, nods towards one of the bouncers, like, take care of it. And he goes, okay.

He goes over, he starts trying to take care of it. It's not working. He gets punched in the face, and the guy pulls out a knife, and it's like, oh, shit. And it's that lovely back shot of him, like, bringing the knife back. And as he does that, Swayze grabs his arm and then cuts the front thing, and he has his arm in one hand, grabs him by the head, and then slams his head through a table, snaps the table in half.

I'm like, this is when you're when you don't be nice anymore. The name is Dalton. That's that moment. Well, you know that table wasn't built by Patrick Swayze. No.

No. No. No. Don't worry about who built it. It.

Don't ask. It's not important. I'm just Don't ask any questions. I'm just so confused. Just it's not important.

It's not built Swayze tough. Don't ask any questions about the tables. Okay. They try to duplicate that shot in the new one, like the arm grab with the knife. Yeah.

They do. It's not as effective as the old one. Yeah. Man, Doug Liman, you're a great filmmaker, but there's also I've been doing my very best to lavish as much praise on Dean Cundy as I possibly can. Oh, he's great.

The It's just shots The movie shot so beautifully and made it so beautifully. And this and this final the bars. The final showdown where Dalton is is lost it a little bit now. He's killed he's killing everybody. And well, I mean, you finally it's all is lost moment.

Right? You you killed his dad collecting Yeah. Like in this movie Yeah. You took out Garrett. He still got his brother, the blind guitar player.

But Yeah. But he's gonna vote he's gonna and he just takes his pride, his car His Mercedes and the knife that killed Wade Garrett. Yep. And just it takes puts it right into the gas pedal and just lets it go full speed into their complex. It's the original Jack Reacher, man.

Dalton's the original Jack Reacher. That's even a Mercedes with a knife in the gas. Oh, yeah. Like, I mean, he's like a lone gun who's like, wait, something's not right here. It's the original Jack Reacher.

And he lets them just destroy his car, which is sad to go. Yeah. It's a nice sound. I love they they hit it with a shotgun while it's midair and it explodes. So I was like, that's The nonsensical explosion.

Twist of the car in the air. So good. Oh, it's so good. It looks enormous. Yeah.

Like, what it's like on a huge like in John Wick where he kills these guys off screen and we see one of the dudes walking around just finding bodies suddenly, which is great where you're just like Great. It becomes like that horror movie kind of where you're like, oh, shit. There's a monster loose right now. Speaking of monsters that are loose. Now in the finale, he's killed all Brad Garrett's dudes including the guy who killed Wade.

You said Brad Garrett? Brad Garrett. Wade Wade Garrett. I did not get you. Raven.

Brad. Brad Wesley. Brad Wesley. I told you Wade Garrett and Brad Wesley and made them Brad Garrett from Everybody Loves Ramos. Everybody loves Ramos.

So he's, like, stabbing he's killing people with with that knife left to right. And then my favorite though is the polar bear KO. The of Tigger? Yeah. The polar bear just starts falling over, and he's utterly stared into stillness and just, like, shooting the dead polar the stuffed polar bear, and it lands on him.

And He's not that cold. And then Swayze just pops his head out and goes, you're made for each other. So good. I love I I love the knife the knife toss catch step, then block himself from the gun, and then throw the knife and take out the guy with the shotgun. Pat from, the bar, the guy from X.

Yeah. It's like the Simpsons where it's like meet a different type of Noah's Ark. This one who's killed 2 of every animal. You're Brad Wesley. That's for me, the apex is that he kills everything.

It's like in Ace Ventura 2. This is a lovely room of death. He walked into a zoo and just goes, like, I'll kill that and I'll kill that. Like, and it's all trophy hunting. I hate taxidermies and stuff.

And he's just a monster. And, like, they're making it very clear that this guy is an absolute piece of shit. Oh, yeah. And, like, it's so intentional. It's so crazy that he's still gonna run for president.

I mean, sorry. I brought the ball here. I got the 711. I got the photo mat here. Christ.

JCPenney is coming here because of me. So if JCPenney that much? I don't know, Brad Wesley. The way that Dalton, like, ducks under one side of a water buffalo and then pops him on the other side. And the fight's pretty good to me, like The final fight with Yeah.

Like a martial artist versus, like, a hunter where he's, like, throw Brad Wesley's throwing the spears and hitting him with the it's, like, oh, I kinda buy this. Sure. And it's it's believable enough for this story. And he's he's in his element. He's at home.

Yes. He knows where everything is. And I think I've said this before, but I think this movie does a really good job of within movie logic, it creates its own boundaries, and it doesn't it doesn't break them. Yeah. It stays within its own well written.

Yeah. It stays within its own little logic bubble. Yeah. And that logic bubble is absurd sometimes, but that's okay within the logic of stones. This world.

No need. Yeah. Patrick Swayze isn't the he wins because he he doesn't nobody wins in a fight. Right? He inspires kill.

But he inspires the other townspeople. Now they kill Brad West. Western. And they all get a shot. A double barrel shot does.

But just like any other western. Right? You come in and and now you've inspired them to stand up against these bullies. And now we're gonna fucking kill them. He is their El japo, and he is toast.

Yeah. El japo. We got it. Somebody's gonna ring 3 amigos at some point. Right?

Oh, god. So Brad Wesley is dead, and they end the movie really quick. Really quick. You hear the police siren. Yeah.

We hear the police siren. Cop shows up. Well, and then, Tigger? Tigger. Tigger pops up.

And they all start saying that and then they all look at Tigger and then Tigger looks at the monkeys on the fireplace. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. That's what they're doing. I also got this like bit of like when the polar bear was falling, he had, like, this look on his face, like It's alive. And so he's, like, he looks at the monkeys, like He's my favorite idiot.

Is he, like, are the monkeys alive? Is everything he's my favorite idiot. Dude, it's so good. He's great. But, yeah, the like, I didn't see anything hard.

Yeah. Like, finally, the cops show up. And the cops show up and nobody saw anything. Well, because it was at Wesley's house. Yeah.

Sure. Of course. That makes perfect sense. They finally show up to that one call or one And now the guy who's paying them off is dead. Patrick Swayze and Kelly Lynch are skinny dipping in the lake.

Mhmm. And for some reason, Jimmy's body doesn't float by. Yeah. Well, let's say. Well, this isn't zone of interest, Paul.

But it's just one of those things where it's like, he ripped his throat out and left him in that lake. And so part of me wants like as they're kissing, did you see his body float by them in the background? There's just a bird on it. Just like a seagull or a bird. Cracking an eye out.

Oh, man. Oh, well, what a movie. We watched 2 movies and Well, then music plays, credits roll, but, like, the again, book ending with another, like, fucking great song and just, like, credits over the videos as pull over cameras it's pulling out. And By the way, did you watch the really stupid credits at the end of the new one? The, like, part of it.

Yeah. Bloating Oh. Oh, yeah. That Conor McGregor survived? Yeah.

They went they went, they went Michael Bay. Yeah. They did. Doug Liman, how dare you? There are when as we've talked about this, when they make these franchises and stuff, there's and they're just awful.

There's 2 ways you go. You either go full transformers or you go full Jurassic World. Mhmm. Yeah. I can't say that it went full trans transformer.

No. There's a bunch of vehicle shit in here, and they went full transformers. Yeah. But especially those end credits with the breaking apart of it, like, slow motion thing. I was like, oh, okay.

Not for me. Yeah. Didn't you like that part at the end of the new one? No. Where well, you didn't like that part where they're like, wait a minute.

What is this place called? And he's like, it's called Roadhouse. And then it just cuts to credits. Sorry. No.

No. Let it no. Commit to it. Gotta get to the actual part. I guess.

Yeah. This is from Yeah. Or the first one or both. All of them. Yeah.

It's the end credit song. Yeah. Yikes. You mean that Academy Award nominee, Steve Jablonski? Yeah.

Oh, yeah. It's true. It is. For what? We did a win.

FX? FX or or sound mixing or something. I also wanna say really quick, McFadden, you mentioned in the new one that it's like, oh, some of the punches are really hard. I don't really feel those. I do in the old one partly because the sound mix is amazing and the effects of the hitting.

Swayze's hard stop Oh, yeah. And then pull away. Like, there's a that moment. He has that beat before he pulls it back again Yeah. Of connection.

And there's just something not only because, like, the fights feel very real and whatnot in the in the old one compared to the new one, but the sound mix of the way that they make those like, the kicks and the punches and especially the fucking breaking glass all the time. It's mixed really well. One thing I noticed, I I wanted to go back and check it again, but the first song in the Roadhouse in the new Roadhouse, like, the first line of the song Mhmm. Is about a blind man. And I was just like, oh, is that on purpose to then, like, throw back to There's a bunch of weird music in that movie.

There's like a sublime just like in particular for, like, because, you know Yeah. Deployment, you know There's like a sublime cover. Like, oh, this is this what you're doing instead? The the one song that I like in the new one really, because everybody does a good job with the music Yeah. Is the one where he's like, thank the Lord for east Atlanta, crispy chicken.

Like that one, I'm like, oh, that's kind of an earworm, but like the I love the music in the old one. I think it's amazing. Yeah. You're a hockey tonk fan. That's like your favorite music.

Right? Ben? You know I am. Okay. I think we're at the end of the movie.

And I feel like we should see, if we're gonna re rank this. And since we let Burris pick last time, we'll let him pick again. We're gonna go with the same Order. Same old story, same old song in dance. Same order.

Yeah. So it's you first? No. It was me first. Oh, wow.

He's right. You're right. Okay. Yeah. It's 4 mullets.

I'm at 4. You came up a half. I came up a half. Yeah. I felt like I was going to, and I just wanted a little bit of I need you to entice it up.

You know? I I just feel like the big thing for me was, like, we all agree that, like, the old one is so good looking. Like, the way that people move, the neon, the way it's shot, and so Mhmm. Yeah. No.

It's for it's it's if if you haven't seen this movie, you gotta watch this movie. By the way, I just wanna announce as we're wrapping this up here, to my right, our guest, mister Ben Burrows, AKA Bruce Burrito, will soon be bringing you the burrito blog at the end of some episodes of this program where if he's not the guest, he'll be giving us some thoughts. Correct? That's right. I'm very excited for that.

But he's here for this one, and I'm gonna give him a chance to tell him tell us his thoughts as he looks at me because I feel like it's like there's a part of me where it's like I gave him a different movie that is about to, at some point, in some other movies. I don't know. There's part of me that wants to go 4a half, and I feel like you're gonna go to 4a half. And I almost wanna meet you there, but I am gonna stay at 4. I'm gonna stay at 4.

This is a movie that I've seen so many times, and you both brought up a lot of good points, but it's like a lot of people say it's a good, bad movie. This isn't a bad movie at all. It's just like it's a this is a 4 star this is a good movie. It's Flormijos. I like this movie.

I get why people would say that. If this movie wasn't if it didn't have the direction and, like, if it wasn't shot as well and choreographed well, and there's so much stuff that, like There could be a lot of cheese ball stuff. Like, the filmmaking quality of this movie is what makes it. They didn't bring that to it. Yeah.

It's like a cheesy eighties action bar fight movie. And I was like, meh. You know, like, that's yeah. I can see there are movies like that already in the eighties genre. Mhmm.

You know? But what makes this one stand alone is all these elements that came together to tell a story that we've seen kind of done before, and and that's what makes it great. There's just the the cast, everything about it. It's just there's just a lot of good stuff, and it all came together. And I don't I'm gonna go up to 4.25 because Oh, we do let guests do that.

Oh, I mean, I get a quarter point. We talk about, like, the music, like, the cast, the way it's shot. I mean, just the way I the fights and stuff. I love me some Swayze. Yeah.

Yeah. The way that they shot those fights and him moving, like, you could have done that in a really boring way. And he found, like, Swayze jumping in the air and doing it from underneath and then cutting the way they chose they took the time to shoot the angles to make it even better. It's completely totally underrated under the radar. I think people don't think of him as this, like action star.

Yeah. I would totally agree. Red Dawn, Steel Dawn, Next of Kin, this movie, arguably the greatest action movie ever made in Point Break. Black Dog is what it is. But, like, this guy made a good chunk of action movies and god fucking bless he's so good in them.
