Breaking The Burnout Cycle

The Confidence Myth: Why Waiting for Achievements To Feel Confident Keeps You Stuck

Dr. Reana Mulcahy PT, DPT Episode 55

Confidence is not the reward waiting at the finish line of achievement—it's the fuel that propels you toward your goals. In this eye-opening exploration of our relationship with self-assurance, I dismantle the dangerous myth that confidence arrives after success, credentials, or external validation.

Drawing from both personal experience and insights from working with high-achievers, I reveal how my own confidence would vanish when surrounded by seven-figure entrepreneurs despite having a doctorate and multiple certifications. This phenomenon exposes the true nature of confidence: it's not about what you've accomplished, but where you place your attention. When we fixate on comparing ourselves to others, we create a moving target that keeps confidence perpetually out of reach.

The transformative insight here is that you already possess everything required for genuine confidence. Through brain-based tools and strategic attention redirection, you can neutralize the mental blocks and negative thought loops that trigger confidence loss. This isn't just about feeling better—it fundamentally changes how you show up for opportunities, allowing you to stand in your power without armor against rejection or criticism. The result? Accelerated success with less effort and struggle.

Ready to break free from the confidence myth and access the self-assurance already within you?

The Rewired to Thrive program offers a systematic approach to reprogramming these limiting patterns. Visit my www.reanamulcahy.com to join the priority list.

Remember, your capacity for confidence isn't waiting on your next achievement—it's waiting on your next thought.

Speaker 1:

Have you ever said to yourself God, I just wish that I was confident. If this is you, then I'm about to share the biggest myth about confidence on today's episode, so stay tuned. Hi, I'm Dr Riana Mulcahy and, after burning out not just once, but twice, I've uncovered that burnout becomes a never-ending loop unless you uncover the subconscious beliefs at the root of it all. Each week, I'm bringing you brain-based tools and strategies that will help you to identify and rewire subconscious blocks keeping you from the success, happiness and freedom that you really want. This is Breaking the Burnout Cycle Podcast. Hey, everyone, welcome into another episode.

Speaker 1:

I wanted to talk about confidence today, and the reason I wanted to talk about confidence is because I, you know, I teach at the university part time and I teach in the physical therapy department, and, you know, one of the students actually told me an amazing compliment, but she said something along the lines of man, rihanna, you just, you're just so confident and I wish that, you know, I wish that I could have that, and I get this a lot in the sense of there are clients that I coach in our rewired to Thrive program where they say something very similar about you know how they compare themselves to other entrepreneurs who are in the field and just they just seem to be so successful because they're just so confident and that they wish that they could have that level of confidence as well. And when I hear this you know this is something that I used to think as well is like, oh my gosh, I wish I could have the level of confidence. If you have ever met my husband, my husband Sean, he is what I would define as very confident, like he is someone who does not care at all what people think about him, and so he could just go into a room, own the room and essentially walk in with this like swagger, this confidence that he could literally be wearing the most ridiculous outfit and trust me, he has at some points and still owns the room, like he is the owner of the building that he knows everyone and I used to be so envious of him of like man. I wish that I could have the same level of confidence that he has. And how many of you guys out there also compare yourselves to highly successful people who have that level of confidence? And If this is you, then you're in the right place, because today I'm about to talk about the biggest myth about confidence and how that myth can essentially be the very reason why you are not confident.

Speaker 1:

I know sounds like a conundrum, and it is because it's. You know, when we talk about confidence, I think so many of us are under the illusion that one day I will be there or that I just need to be like. You know, insert whoever you're comparing yourself to, and when we look at it, we look at it from this very external lens where it's like this whole thing about the only way to have confidence is when an external circumstance happens. So maybe it's making more sales, or maybe it's finally becoming a doctor, or maybe it's finally hitting a goal, maybe it's losing 20 pounds or whatever it is that you are saying if this, then I will be confident. And if that were true where all it took to be confident was to achieve something outside of yourself whether that's like the examples I gave then why is it that there are so many people who are highly successful and yet they're not confident? Because if all it took to be confident was to achieve external goals, then we would all be confident at a certain point. And yet I know for a fact from my own personal experience that that is not the case In fact. Right, I used to be under the story and the illusion that once I get my doctorate, that once I get my doctorate, I will be confident. And yet I could walk into a room and, with certain people, be extremely confident.

Speaker 1:

But the minute that I get into a new atmosphere, like you know, there I'm a part of a mastermind called next level mastermind, of a mastermind called Next Level Mastermind, and there are some very highly successful entrepreneurs in there who are making multiple seven figures. And you know, in those moments, that is where I was noticing that, when I got into the room with them, all of my confidence would go out the door. It was suddenly like all of my achievements weren't enough. All of the doctorates, the accolades, the certifications that I've gotten suddenly became so minuscule. And why was that became so minuscule? And why was that? Well, it's because it was coming through a lens of comparison.

Speaker 1:

And that's the point is that what really drives confidence isn't a matter of how much you achieve or how much you do, but it's a matter of where you place your attention. And so, oftentimes, when I get students in my program who they want to coach through their lack of confidence, then what I tend to ask them is where are you placing your attention? How do you define confidence? What do you believe would make you confident? And that's typically where I will start to see the same stories that I used to be enrolled in as well, and you know it still comes up from time to time. I'm not perfect, but this whole thing about placing the attention on comparing yourself to the other people in the room, and if we are doing it that way, then the goalpost always moves where. Now the doctorate isn't enough, so I got to go and get more credentials. I got to go and get more certifications, more knowledge, more this, so that I can be confident, when in reality, you already have everything that it takes to be confident, as is.

Speaker 1:

But the only reason why that's not happening is because where you are choosing to place your attention, and so the biggest myth about confidence is that it will happen when insert whatever achievement, goal, milestone that you are shooting to hit. It won't happen that way. In fact, confidence has to start with you, which oftentimes will be the very thing that also accelerates the rate at which you hit that milestone, and not only that, but it'll allow you to do that with less work. I mean, just think about why is it that you want confident in the confident confidence in the first place?

Speaker 1:

Well, if we were to really boil it down, the reason why so many of us crave this like confidence, and this swagger and this ability to walk in and own the room and say I am the expert in rewiring the mind or whatever your expertise is, the only reason people want that is because, to be honest, if you're being completely honest with yourself, is because of what you believe that confidence will get you. And to some extent, it's true. I mean, I don't know of any successful seven figure plus entrepreneur or even person in general who goes around constantly questioning themselves, constantly riddled with self doubt and self worthiness, questions and issues, and so that is the only reason why so many of us want confidence is because of what we believe it will get us. And the irony is confidence is already within you if, and only if, you're willing to choose to focus your attention on the attributes, the things that make you worthy as is. And so one of the exercises that we do in the Rewired to Thrive program is that we really work on tools that help you to build awareness of where you are placing your attention, and not only where you're placing your attention, but what mental blocks, what internal thought loops, what negative emotional loops are happening around situations when you're feeling triggered that are causing the loss of confidence.

Speaker 1:

And then we take whatever we uncover through brain-based tools to essentially reprogram and rewire those so that they're neutralized, so that you can show up unfazed, not worrying about what people are thinking, not putting up your armor to try to protect yourself from rejection or from criticism or from failure, and you can stand in your power confidently as you show up for these opportunities that then lead to the acceleration of the success that you're working so hard for. And so, if this is something that you are interested in tapping into as well, then the priority list for the Rewired to Thrive program is open. You can find that at wwwreonimalcaheycom or the link is down in the show notes below. But other than that, I hope that each and every one of you has an amazing rest of your week, and I hope you each know that you already have everything that you need within you. So I will see you guys next week on another episode. Until then, bye for now.
