SPEAKER_06

Hey magic makers, I'm Mom Virella. I'm Yuki to Cosplay.

SPEAKER_05

And we got Juju Jones here. Juju Jones is in the house here. There we go. CJ will not be joining us today. She's not feeling well. But we have very special guests. But before we get started, real quick, put your wands up and let's solemnly swear we're up to no good. All right. So welcome, Jan, to our podcast, Magic Making Mischief. And uh if you guys know uh Jojo's Bizarre Adventures, comment because I want to see how many of you actually are familiar with this anime because his cosplays are amazing. And he just recently, just in time for May the 4th, actually, is coming up with a Star Wars one too, which I love that. But uh, we also are gonna get into he does a lot of awesome group meetups, community things too. So welcome. Thank you so much for joining us today.

SPEAKER_00

Oh thank you guys for having me. Appreciate it.

SPEAKER_05

I have got the ability to do screen share today, so I'm gonna pull up some of your your your stuff on here for those who have put my stuff on glass.

SPEAKER_06

Oh my bless, bless, bless, bless, bless.

SPEAKER_03

Okay. Oh wait, no audio on there. I don't want to say that. Okay, let's see if we got it. Okay, can we see this? Holy moly.

SPEAKER_05

This is Uncle Speedwagon right here.

SPEAKER_00

Wherever it is on the the it's there.

SPEAKER_05

And this is the this is the classic uh um this is the clap classic Speedwagon right here, right? Like the cosplay.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, this is this is like my signature cosplay. Um, this is the first one that I did from an anime. Um, I had done costuming before, but they were not from any like anime-related series. Um, when I was a little kid, Halloween was really important to me. Um, but I started watching JoJo in 2017 and I ran with it until Speedwagon was born. And he's gone through a bunch of different iterations. This is probably the final one, maybe. I don't know if I'm gonna change it.

SPEAKER_05

This is a great one. I love your your simp card there. It's cracking me up, actually.

SPEAKER_00

I just noticed if you if you look at the the back of my camera, there's a bag hanging over there. That's my speed bag. Uh, people have like Eda bags, right? With like pins and stuff. That's my speed a bag, and my simp card is hanging on that bag.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, that's awesome. Oh, hold on. Okay, so you got a few, uh I've got a few other of your cosplays here. And uh I know a lot of your cosplays are from JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, but you have some other ones in here too. Here's your Star Star Wars one just in time for May the 4th. Hello.

SPEAKER_00

I've been wanting to cosplay Luke Sky for a long time. He has been like Star Wars was the first series that I got into when I was a kid. It was like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back to the Future. And so he's very special to me. Super special to me.

SPEAKER_05

Awesome. I love it. And hold on, I'm gonna I don't want to play the sound because I don't want to have any issues. I don't really think your stuff. But I like I'm gonna pull up your Instagram in a minute, too. But these are such great cosplays. You did you do such a good job. I've got to ask with the uh with the anime ones specifically. Let's see if I can if I can zoom these in a little bit so you can see this better. But the um I lost my thing. I'm sorry, hold on.

SPEAKER_06

While she's doing that, we're gonna hatch up on some comments real quick. So we got super hubby says hi all. Jeremy Vanders, Jeremy Vanders wands, maker of beautiful and fine wands since 2024. Yes, yes. We have my edition right here, and momby has hers. TJ is unavailable to show hers at this current time. Please leave a message. We got hi y'all from Geekred. Jazz says, What up, N3? What up, homie? There you go. And Jojo OG is awesome. It is the best.

SPEAKER_05

Here we go. Yeah. So we got your Instagram. And okay, so on your uh on your makeup on days. Actually, this is our this is our real, so I know I won't get in trouble with this, but you get to play. Oh, it may play the sound. Hold on. I forgot to tell them not to play the sound. We're having some measures. Anyway, uh your makeup on here is what there we go. I'm gonna turn the sound off before I show this. There, okay, so now I gotta so your makeup on these though, like as far as like bringing the anime characters to life, uh I want to ask, like, how do you get that that distinction, you know? Because you've got on some of these. I know I'm leaning into my camera, I'm sorry, I guess. There we go. Okay. So the details you do on these though, I love how you you really bring the anime characters to life though on it. The details you do with your cosplays. Uh, what where do you get your ideas on this? Like how you do your your makeup videos specifically.

SPEAKER_00

You know what's surprising is that Jojo itself has a very specific, has a very specific art style that to most anime people be like, oh, what the heck is this? Why is everybody so like Greco-Roman and everything is so well defined in the line, every single line is so so big, bold, and brash. Um, and that's just the style of the artist because uh Araki is the name of the guy who writes the manga. He his style is very much inspired by like um Greco-Roman statues, uh fashion models, that kind of thing. And he loves to emphasize uh uh like facial structure. And so if you look at other Jojo cosplayers, not just me, um, we all have our own way of bringing those lines to life. And a lot of times it's through like um through waterproof eyeliner. And you'll see in like my non-JoJO cosplays, I use the same trick. Do you see how like the same type of lines are in my Hunter Hunter cosplay? Yeah, it's not JoJo, but I still have some of the same little patterns that I kind of use throughout. Um, some people caught me one time in my in a non-Jojo cosplay and they knew it was me already. They were like, Uncle Speedwagon, it's you. And I said, Oh, how did you know I'm not in Jojo cosplay? I said, Your makeup gave it away. And I'm like, My makeup. So yeah, it just seems to be that the style that I made for myself. Um kind of what's it called? It it's characteristic of my cosplays and of Jojo cosplays in general.

SPEAKER_06

Sounds like you have your own type of contour essentially, which actually is your like your signature.

SPEAKER_00

I actually recently just started doing like actual contour to add to my makeup. Before I did not do that because I was very afraid because uh I I had no experience using makeup in the past. Um, and so before it was just waterproof eyeliner, concealer, and setting spray. And that was it, the three the three things that I used. And then as I got further in and like maybe just like in the past couple months, uh I learned how to use a little bit of contour, so now I can like make my jaw more chiseled or whatever the heck, and then dark around my nose bridge and whatever this is.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, your brownies is one of my favorite pictures right here at this crash me app.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, one of my friends is a big Daredevil cause player. So funny.

SPEAKER_05

That's so funny.

SPEAKER_00

I love that. And then um, with this with this specific post, too, um, kind of alludes to something I did recently where at a convention I did some healthcare screenings. Uh, for those who don't know, um, I am a second-year medical student, and the character that was in that post is a medical student. So I was like, what if I just brought my equipment to the convention and then did health screening? So they gave me an extra chair, and I just yeah, I remember this one.

SPEAKER_04

This this is really cool though.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so these are actual health screenings in this video.

SPEAKER_04

Like, this is what you where you were set up doing it. Is that what that's yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

People thought at first that I was just kidding. That I was just it was just for like funny reels or for just for content. I was like, no, actually, sit down. I'm gonna go through like I'm gonna give you a whole you know a token.

SPEAKER_06

Let me read that comment real quick. So he's just gonna tell us we're all dehydrated.

SPEAKER_00

Which I did tell some people. I did tell some people they were dehydrated because who isn't dehydrated at a convention, honestly, especially cosplayers, right?

SPEAKER_06

Especially cosplayers, seriously, too busy remembering to not blink in pictures to remember to take a drink.

SPEAKER_00

Bro, my eyes get so dry at conventions, and it's because I want to see everything.

SPEAKER_06

I don't want to move literally so um I have a good uh question right here, real quick. How long have you been doing cosplay?

SPEAKER_00

That is a good question. I'm gonna sound very young, actually, because um a lot of the people that I look up to, people that I work with, have been cosplaying for forever. I only got into anime in 2017. Most people, and that was like my first year of college. Most people were watching anime since they were kids, they're watching their favorite you know pieces of media since they were kids. I again, as I said, I was a back to the future Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Jaws, the whole nine yards when I was a little kid, but I didn't like start costuming and cosplaying until 2017. So that's how many years later.

SPEAKER_06

TBH sames these though. 2017 for me too.

SPEAKER_05

Nice, yeah. Honestly, I I I I've always loved Halloween and any reason to dress up, you know, costuming. But yeah, a special cosplay is more recent for for a lot of us, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I noticed that like with the rise of anime being popular, it also makes it made other people want to jump into it. What was your question?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I'm so sorry. I need I my question is what can you say to amateur cosplayers like myself to help better my game?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that is.

SPEAKER_02

I mostly just buy things from Amazon and the thrift store, but I have a whole lot of characters like money.

SPEAKER_00

That's good. You know, if you open up my closet right now, and a lot of people like me. If you if you look at my closet right now, and also if you look at those pictures of a mom of previous cosplays, there's at least one thrifted piece in each of them. I would I don't I cannot buy everything fully from from one place unless the the costume is very specific and I cannot make it at home or can't thrift it. I've been a big fan of thrifting because thrifting is cheaper, it's affordable, and it it goes against fast fashion, which I'm not a big fan of. Um, which I'm a big fan of going against fast fashion. Yeah. Um, so thrifting is really awesome. And um modifying said thrifted materials is the best way to go about it. Um there's that one cosplay of Kakyoing Noriaki. He has the red hair um and the jacket with like the wagon wheels on it. That's an outfit that uh doesn't actually exist in in uh the in like the anime, and it's like a bunch of fan art on the internet of like what would happen if he was to continue in a different season or he was in different series. And so I was like, okay, what if I just took a jacket that I found at Goodwill and I just threw a bunch of stuff on it. So I like sewed together little patches, I like cut out some leather and a bunch of things. Yeah, and then and the best part about it is that I use a technique that no one that people do, but I I do it the most, I feel like, where I safety pin everything onto clothes so that when I'm done, I can take it off and it becomes a piece of clothing again. Um I don't wanna like make a costume piece just a costume piece, I want to use it. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And okay, wait, was that yeah, let me see if I've got the is that was that this one you're talking about?

SPEAKER_00

The where is it? Scroll down. He is it it is that character, you're correct. But there's uh there's uh an outfit of his where he has like um he's got like a gray, a gray brownish jacket. Keep going. I have too much stuff on my hands. There, there, there, or where no, actually I pass them. The one sitting down, the guy sitting down in the row above. So go up one. That guy, yes, yeah, yeah. The guy with the wagon wheels on his chest.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay, gotcha.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so all of that was pieces like the cuffs.

SPEAKER_02

And that's that's thrifty.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, all those pieces were thrifted, and I think oh the whole thing maybe costed me like like 50 bucks, and then like I had to use scrap material from like other things to make the cloth belt pieces. The belts were thrifted too, the pants thrifted, um, the inside shirt, the two inside shirts, and uh yeah.

SPEAKER_06

That's awesome. Oh, it's awesome.

SPEAKER_00

So, yeah, big fan of reusing stuff because um things are expensive, guys.

SPEAKER_06

Absolutely, yeah. Okay, dude, most of my stuff is the same thing, worthless.

SPEAKER_02

I love the safety pin idea. I'm told can I steal it?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, no, go right ahead. Safety pin everything so that when you're done, you can wear it again. And then, like, oh look, this is my box of this character stuff, and then when I'm done, I open it, put it away, and then I get another box and say, Okay, this is this character, and I can um pin all that stuff onto it and remove it.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that's a good thing. That's so freaking super smart.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, saves a little bit of time. You don't have to buy the same piece of clothing twice, thrice.

SPEAKER_05

That's really smart. I I've actually reused some recent cosplay pieces for other things this this year, and it was fun. I was like, oh, that worked out well. So it's nice when you can use something that's totally unrelated to another one, too. Um so for those who aren't JoJo experts, uh the Speedwagon found the Speed Wagon Foundation is a legendary group that funds medical research and supports heroes, right? So since you are actually you're actually a second-year medical student in real life, too. So do you feel like you're really literally becoming the living embodiment of your cosplay at this point?

SPEAKER_00

Well, that might have been the goal the whole time. Um, some people get into their characters. Ah, well, so some people really get into their characters, right? They like, oh, he's so me for real. I have some friends who like they want to be Spider-Man for real. So they train to do like uh free running and parkour and they do calisthenics so that they can be like Spider-Man. For me, um, Speedwagon is a character in the anime that is not necessarily the strongest. He's not necessarily he doesn't have any special training, he doesn't have any superpowers. Um, but he loves he loves the main character, he loves his friends and he loves their family. And so um, this is not spoilers because you you don't need to watch JoJo to understand Speedwagon. Um, after the main protagonist, um after the main protagonist uh passes away, you know, um Speedwagon takes it upon himself to take care of his family going forward. And so what he does is in the 1800s he moves to America and he strikes oil and he becomes an oil baron, like like uh like Andrew Carnegie and Rockefeller and all of them. And so instead of using the money for his own stuff, he decides to fund medical research, scientific research, and all the money. Anytime that the the Joe stars, which are the main characters, go on an adventure, the Speedwagon Foundation funds whatever they're doing, basically. Oh and so how that translates to like what I do is that the Joe stars today are all of my all the cosplayers in the cosplay community that do JoJo. I want to support them the best that I can with what I have. I'm not an oil bear and I'm poor, but um with the skills that I have and the the means in which I can coordinate and organize things, I get people together in the same way the Speedwagon Foundation supports the characters in the anime. So I am I am I the living embodiment of Speedwagon? I try to be because I think it's cool. Um, do I make it my whole personality? No, but I like to do it because it's fun.

SPEAKER_06

I love that. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_05

The Speedwagon Foundation is like a real world community group at this point, and I love that. Yeah, that's awesome.

SPEAKER_02

You can't make it your personality either, you absorb it into your personality and you make it your own, and that is so neat.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I like to tell people that he's not me, and I'm not him, but I borrow stuff from him, and among the other different things that I do, he's like one-third maybe of me, or a fourth of me.

SPEAKER_05

So you do a lot of uh JoJo meetups at this point, like you have a lot of uh big groups that have come together, and uh my question is how hard is it to get that whole group together to strike a pose basically, all in one group?

SPEAKER_00

What's fun is that at meetups we have like a designated protocol that we all kind of like understand um because the the anime is divided into nine nine parts, and so we will say it when we're all together, I have my megaphone or speaker and be like, hi everybody, it's good to see you. You know the rules, you know what we're gonna do. Everybody from part one, please come up to the front. And then part one goes up and then blah-bam photos, and then I'll say, like, pose in three, two, one, switch, pose three, two, one, switch. All the photographers, everyone's phones are like right in the middle, everyone's shooting at the same time in that way, and then like, all right, good job, part one. Now we can go to part two, and then part two will step up and then so and so until the very end, and then we'll do a big group picture and stuff and stuff. It's almost like because you're in the fandom, you know what to do already, and so they just yeah, big brains. I don't do a lot of heavy lifting. People think that what I do is hard, like, oh, it must be so hard to organize. Oh, it must be so hard. But I tell them, have you never sent an email before? Have you never like messaged somebody on Instagram? Those that's the only two tools that I use to host meetups, and then like, had you have you ever spoken into a microphone before? It's that simple, really.

SPEAKER_06

It's the functional communication for me.

SPEAKER_00

You know how underrated, underrated functional communication, how like good communication is like the key to everything, to life, to relationships, to people, to the cosmic community. Oh my god, if we just communicated more.

SPEAKER_06

Trust me, I know.

SPEAKER_00

Oh man.

SPEAKER_06

Speaking of communication, we have a comment that says, hello there from It's Just Joyful.

SPEAKER_00

Hello, hello.

SPEAKER_05

So um, I actually had my first uh group cosplay meetup that I was kind of in charge of this year, and it did it was kind of crazy because half the group ended up sick, we're not able to come. So it wasn't as big as it was gonna be. But I I was I was impressed with how much fun it was, though, just because we all got a chance to really get the matching cosplays and come together. I can't wait to get the whole group together because that's gonna be even more fun.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

But uh yeah, it's it's more of a friend thing, I guess, honestly, is what it seemed like. Because you know, even when more people joined in, it's just like community it is what it's all about, you know. Cosplay is community, that's the whole thing, is it's connection, and I love that. I love that, and that's so awesome. That what is the biggest group you've ever had together, though?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay. Well, I live in California, uh I'm a Californian. Um, and so the biggest anime, supposedly the biggest anime convention in north northern America is anime expo. Supposedly, I'm not sure if that's true. Um, so every time I go to anime expo in Los Angeles, um, my meetups there are always a big hit. Um, I think in 2024 or 2025. No, 2024, I think was my biggest one. Um, I I have photos from each of the meetups, and you can scroll through the history to see. Um, but I think we've had upwards of like a hundred, more than a hundred people. At one time we I think we broke we broke a hundred, but and then I couldn't tell how many more were there. But then security had to tell us like this is a lot of people. You kind of need to like hurry this up. And it was at the tail end of our meetups. I was like, okay, uh we'll we'll finish for today. Everyone, uh, go trade Instagram's bye. Let's all march back to the convention center. So we kind of like blocked traffic for a little bit because there was a hundred people moving at the same time. Oh my god. Kind of funny. Um, one thing I like to do as well is that my meetup locations are sometimes hard to find. I try to find places that are accommodating for all of us and also not in the way of traffic and not gonna like disrupt people. So, what I do is I tell people 30 minutes beforehand to meet in like the main lobby of whatever convention center we're in, and we do a JoJo walk. We walk together. Uh we walk together as one big like caravan to the location, and it's always a spectacle. People are like, what the heck are all these people doing here? And like, oh, we're going to a meetup in Chicago. And then we, you know, I play music, and you know.

SPEAKER_06

That's so cute. Love, I love the interaction and all of it with it.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it's a community that makes me very happy and they're very supportive and they're very inclusive and they're oh I could I could talk about them forever and I know I said I wouldn't ramble about it, but yeah, there's just so many aspects of being a community organizer that makes me happy, and I get I feel a little selfish sometimes because I I indulge in all of like the people getting together and I like to look at everybody and be like, Yes, I have done this, but I didn't do it myself. These people they put their A game into their cosplays and then they showed up in whatever weather, whatever heat, whatever conditions or what have you. Um, sometimes I'll host meetups um at convention centers, like on the outskirts where like uh you don't need a badge to get in. So some people will just pull up in Ubers or their cars, like it dropped off and be like, I'm here, and I'm like, oh my gosh, you're here. You weren't even gonna come to the convention, but you're here for the meetup. So I love they do all the heavy lifting. I don't do I don't do that much. They they're the ones, the community is the one that does all the work, truly.

SPEAKER_02

Period. It's like super hard to be upset around you for anything, any reason whatever you're like my face hurts. I'm grinning so much.

SPEAKER_00

Well, there are some times where you have to be upset, and I will speak about this because I think it's important. Um, and we had some some people, or at least come up to me and say, Uncle Speedwagon, there's some people that may attend your meetup that I don't think will make people feel safe. And this has happened on a couple of occasions, and I've had to stand on my two feet and I've had to say these people are not gonna be allowed to come to my meetups. We've had I've had scares in Sacramento, in Los Angeles, in Las Vegas, um, and all those different meetups, uh well, they went well. There, there wasn't they're without a hitch. The the person that we were concerned about or people that we were concerned about didn't show up. But just being vigilant about the kinds of people, yeah, yeah, yeah. And I think you'll agree with me, there's not a lot of like real adults in the cosplay community. There are adults, but there's a lot of people who don't take safety and like actual logistics seriously, and I like to do that because I may not be the oldest, but I am but I think as like the the head and the lead, I have to be because it looks it affects back on me.

SPEAKER_06

Age does not equal emotional maturity or wisdom.

SPEAKER_02

I was gonna say is literally a number, wisdom is different, and it comes in all ages.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yeah, emotional maturity does not equal it, it comes from experience, and so um another aspect of my community work comes from uh when I was younger, I was like kind of bullied for the things that I liked, or like you thought I was weird for liking things, and I think that's a common thread among a lot of cosplayers and a lot of people who like art. Um, so I don't think it's bad to like these things. I love what I do. Um, but because I felt that way as a kid, I wanted to make a space where people would never have to feel that way. Um, it's okay to be cringe, you know. And Jojo in and of itself is a very cringe-related thing. Like people when they associate cringy things, they think about Jojo. And I'm I'm totally okay with that because easy cringe all out. Yeah, yeah. What people consider is like like not socially some young people are like not socially acceptable to laugh really loud or like to to like you know, being slightly awkward or like making jokes and you know, doing those kinds of things. Jojo has so much of that. So people I make a space in the community for people to feel safe to do that and not feel judged, not feel ridiculed, not get bullied. And so it came from when I was growing up and I wanted to provide provide that space for people today, you know.

SPEAKER_06

I love that. Thank you so much for being that way, mommy. Your last question?

SPEAKER_05

Uh yes. So if uh someone wanted to set up like a group cosplay event like this or a meetup like this, uh, or even uh, oh, you kind of did give us like the cosplay advice a little bit our days, though. But let's let's uh focus on that. Like, what would be your advice for someone who wanted to start that, you know, to have that group meetup?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, very simple, very basic. Um, let's say there's an anime convention in town and you want to know if they hold if they're gonna host Coslet meetups, go to their website and scroll through and look to see if they have something already set up. If they do, follow their protocol, email the right people, and usually they'll they'll get back to you pretty quick and they'll tell you, oh yeah, we can put you here at this time or this time you can request a location and space. Um, if a convention doesn't have that, you can reach out to them via DMs or by their like contact us email. Um I host uh cosplay meetups in different places. I don't go to all of them. Um I have my Speedwagon Foundation delegates in different states and different countries doing their own thing. Delegates? Yeah, we I was trying to set one up in India recently, and um they just not they don't respond to their email. So I said that's that's as much as I could do because I know I can only go so far. So try, try, send emails, send DMs, do that, and they will walk you through it if you if you really, really want to do it. They have I have a they either have a protocol or they'll say, Oh, we've never done this before. Sure, we can set something up and then they'll put it together for you.

SPEAKER_05

Very nice. Uh so do you have any upcoming ones that you want to share that people can meet you at and cross-play together?

SPEAKER_06

Which is the first one that's popping up soonest. There you go. Sorry, let me just pull up my notes real quick.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, let no, because I literally have all my announcements in an in a notes app where I'd like back to back. I can give you the big brains. Yeah, so um May the 2nd, which is this this Saturday.

SPEAKER_06

This Saturday.

SPEAKER_00

This is uh Fresno here in Fresno, uh California is having a May the 4th event for Star Wars. I'm gonna be Luke Skywalker there. Um, May 3rd, the day afterwards. Oh, it's happening both May 2nd and 3rd. Um, there's an anime convention in town called Animania that's happening um for both for the whole weekend. I'll be there on Sunday. Uh and then, and then, and then, and then and then and then anime central is another one that's happening May 16th. Um, in France, we're having the Japan Party Jojo picnic on the 23rd. Oh, this is May. This is May. And then MomoCon in Georgia on the 23rd, and then Fanime. Uh, we're also having a meetup on the 24th.

SPEAKER_06

Oh my! Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

I'm sorry, guys. I'm doing this because I want to make sure everyone gets to hear this because I can reach out to these people, yeah. Um, in California, again. And then in Texas, they're doing a Jojo uh cupsleeve event. Uh again, more information for all this is in my Instagram. And then the big ones, the big ones, there's three big ones coming up: Anime Expo, the one that I usually host in Los Angeles, uh, SmashCon in Sydney, Australia, and then the biggest, newest one that I'm very excited about that I'm not hosting, but one of my delegates is hosting. They're hosting one, a JoJo meetup at the San Diego Comic-Con in San Diego. Yeah, the big famous one. Yeah.
