Hey Magic Fakers, I'm Mommy Roller.
SPEAKER_00I'm Yukita Cosplay.
SPEAKER_04Juju Jones. And I'm CJ Peterson. Get your wands to the ready. Because we solemnly swear we're up to no good. And those pixies are up to no good again this week. Because for some reason the echo is back again. The pixies are playing with our soundboard. So we're going to apologize ahead of time. Um so yeah. We had the pixies running around again doing their little magic making mischief against us. So we're gonna say that first off. So we apologize ahead of time. Yukita, Jeremy is here. Would you like to introduce our wands?
SPEAKER_00Well, first leg, cause love y'all the best from Jazz, because of course Super Hubby says hi y'all. And Jeremy Vanders. Alright, ladies, get your wands from the ready. Jeremy Vanders wands, maker of gorgeous wands since 2024. We have all different variations that all represent us in our uniqueness and according to our personality and slash house. Yay! Thanks, Jeremy.
SPEAKER_04Thank you. Our guest today is Gino Astorita of Hatch City Toys. Welcome, Gino.
SPEAKER_02Thank you for having me. Appreciate it.
SPEAKER_04We're excited to have you. Gino has everything in his store from retro and vintage toys. I got to see tons of pictures as I was going through his Instagram for men and women and girls and boys alike. And I kind of want to go to his store.
SPEAKER_02We kind of want to have you here.
SPEAKER_04I do. So Yukita brought him in. Yakita, would you care to introduce him and bring him in?
SPEAKER_00My goodness. Gino has been a staple part of my toy cosplaying career for quite some time now. Every time me and my lovely husband go to visit our cousins in Round Rock, we always, always, always make time to go see Gino at Bat City Toys in Austin. Like, look, got the gear, y'all. If y'all don't got the gear, y'all don't know. Um he's a store. No, when you first walk in, I'm gonna give them a little bit of a spoiler. And when you first walk in, Star Wars. It is a lot of things. On the left, you got He-Man. You go further back, he has a cool little coffee couch, is what I call it in my head. Because there's a little coffee corner for those who require the caffeination. A little couch, he's got a little game room area back there too for like the kiddos and everything. There's an upstairs area where you can take pictures, and there's comic books galore. You guys, if you are into your retro vintage toys, Bat City Toys is where to go in Austin, Texas.
SPEAKER_04Nice. So how long have you been open?
SPEAKER_02Well, in our new location, we've been open for about two months now. Um I started the company about five years ago. But we've had a brick and mortar store for the last three years.
SPEAKER_04And how did you get into it? What made you start it and that sort of thing? What's your story behind it?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, well when I was a little kid, I wanted everything with a sudden like all of us. And my dad used to joke with me, chime with me, and said, Well, you know, one day you can get it all for yourself. So uh flashboard, and uh I did, and then my wife looked like said, Okay, now what are you gonna do with all this stuff? So I said, Well, I'm thinking I'm gonna open the store, and that's kind of you know, it was it was more of a tongue-in-cheek kind of an idea. Um, but then I said, Hey, why not? You know, I think Austin needs it. I'd love to bring this out and share this with people, and uh I'm so glad that I did. It's just been a wonderful experience.
SPEAKER_04Very cool. So, where do you get your toys? Because I know that you've got a lot of different types of toys and a lot of different types of phantoms that are in there.
SPEAKER_02Well, when we first opened up the store, about 80% of what was in the store was from my own personal collection. And over the past three years, it's been a mix of what the public has provided, what we've curated. And when I say we, I mean me and my business partners, and quite frankly, my business partners' collections as well have a big part of what makes up the store. So we have a lot of ourselves invested in it, and uh, it's also fun to hear people walk in and go, Oh, I sold you theater, or oh uh I think that was mine, and I sold it to you, and now somebody else is picking it up, and it was there the first time they visited, and it's not there the next time, and they know it's got a new life with a new person who loves it as much as they did.
SPEAKER_05What's the most nostalgic thing do you have in the store?
SPEAKER_02Nostalgic. So, you know, it's funny you say that because our uh uh motto, if you will, is we sell nostalgia. So, quite frankly, we we try to make everything we bring in here brings up nostalgia. And some of the coolest things are when people walk in and they see Teddy Ruxpin and Grubby sitting on top of the arcade machine, or my Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks and his lunchbox, or Alf and the Alf lunchbox. Um, and a lot of it is stuff that's not for sale. Uh, we just bring it in so people can connect to it. Masks and cosplay pieces, uh maquettes, helmets, uh, all sorts of things in here bring bring you back.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was looking at the pictures and I saw a different thing, and I'm just the little I'm an 80s kid. So I'm I'm looking at this stuff online and going, oh my gosh, I remember that. Oh, I would get lost in that store. That would not be a good place for me. Yeah, so the hobby would go no.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, it's it's I tell people all the time come in, hang out, enjoy. Um, I think what we all miss right now is connecting in society, um, having a homegrown place that's grown, we're homegrown, all local guys with one store, another chain. Um, and even if you don't buy anything, we love you guys to just come in and walk down memory lane. And that's hence the couches and the coffee, right? Come hang out for a while.
SPEAKER_04There's literally toys all over this room.
SPEAKER_02I saw it and I loved it.
SPEAKER_05Oh, we might all do a little collecting, I think.
SPEAKER_00Hold on, this is my favorite comment real quick. The Texas Toy Hunter, my husband, says Austin's toy store scene was dry until Bat City came along.
SPEAKER_04Nice period. Thank you.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. And that is an avid vintage toy collector. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well what was the craziest part was you know, I was here for about 10 years before Bat City Toys was born. And in that time, I'd been trying to find something that would be the soul of the toy genre here in Austin, like they have in uh Dallas or Houston. And that was a big driver for wanting to do this. And once I opened the store, I finally got to meet a lot of the guys that were trying to do what I was doing, but just couldn't get it to a point of opening a store. So we've tried to include those folks in the store as well, and really create a community of toy lovers, toy hunters, and even some local guys that you know uh sell and trade in toys that weren't all interconnected until we were here to kind of make those connections.
SPEAKER_04I think the beauty is people our age right now are are we have money and we want the nostalgia toys now, so it's like you were in like the perfect sweet spot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Okay, hold on.
SPEAKER_05We have in the chat.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03Are you ready to rumble?
SPEAKER_00Oh are you gonna add more guilt show to it? Let's get ready to rumble.
SPEAKER_02We need to do a cordage match or something.
SPEAKER_00All right, so I'm ready for the HBO series. I need to see Quidditch.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_00And apparently some friends were just in Austin. There you go.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_04On our list. Do you like this?
SPEAKER_02Well, that's and and that's been a really cool thing, too. It's not just the locals who enjoy this store, but I get a lot of folks that are traveling through, and like myself, everywhere they go, they look for local toy store, and so um, you know, we're we're kind of on the map and and try to bring people through, and you know, hopefully when they walk out of here, they carry a little bit uh uh of nostalgia and pride for Bad City, you know, you know our home.
SPEAKER_04Now, do you do comic-cons too, or do you just stick to your brick and mortar?
SPEAKER_02No, so we uh uh basically we have the brick and mortar, we do online sales as well uh through our website, and yeah, we'll we'll travel around and do shows as well, too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's where we met them, toy shows, yeah, yeah, toy shows, especially the local guys.
SPEAKER_02Um we've gone as far out as Oklahoma so far.
SPEAKER_03Yay. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Sweet. That's where we're at. So hopefully you can uh do one up here and let me know when you're coming up this way.
SPEAKER_02Like there you go. Absolutely, absolutely. So yeah, we're we're looking at it possibly being in uh uh OKC on October 17th.
SPEAKER_04Okay, writing that one down. Where at?
SPEAKER_02Um, you know what? I'll have to double check. I'm sorry, I just got the invitation.
SPEAKER_04Well, send it send it to me in the email because you have my email. Yeah, I can for sure.
SPEAKER_00CJ said, I'm going. Let me know. Yes.
SPEAKER_05Well, if you ever need Houston, you'll have to catch up with the two.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah, that happens too. I like to go down there and uh uh visit Misfit Toys and my friends over there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, MissFit.
SPEAKER_02So as a matter of fact, if you go to Misfit Toys right now, I believe it's still there. There is the biggest place that GI Joe ever created, the USS flag. And that was actually sold out of our store and taken down to Houston, and then Misfit's got it. So we're already sharing stuff.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_04Uh super happy. I need to finish the rest of the question. How long have you been in what?
SPEAKER_00What the biz, maybe? We've been recollecting. There you go. How long have you been in a connoisseur of toys yourself?
SPEAKER_02Collecting pretty much my whole life. Um obviously I thinned it down quite a bit when I started dating because I didn't want to scare anybody off on the ease. So um my wife didn't know what she was getting into, and uh she's still with me today, so obviously I picked well and uh blessed that way.
SPEAKER_03Hashtag most of my life.
SPEAKER_05Uh I think I got so many toys that I wish I could have back over the years. I'm gonna have to start looking for rainbow bright again, again. I miss her, I miss her.
SPEAKER_00I have seen so many rainbow brights at all these toy shows I go to. So many. Not only that, but Teddy Rux band, like I see things all the time.
SPEAKER_05I don't remember a little friend's name. I had this little little fuzzy white guy with her, and I'd carry him in my little purse everywhere I went.
SPEAKER_00I know who you're talking about. I can't remember his name either.
SPEAKER_04Strawberry Shortcake is coming back. Yes, there's a lot of I had lemon meringue when I was little. See that I haven't seen lemon meringue lately, but strawberry shortcake is like everywhere anymore.
SPEAKER_02Well, here's a uh little bit of uh fact for you guys most all of the toy lines that we remember, either last year or this year, are hitting their 40th anniversary.
SPEAKER_04What about what about Voltron?
SPEAKER_02Now Voltron's even older. Uh things like Voltron Transformers, they actually had life in Japan before they came to the US. So those could be approaching the 50-year mark, even though for us it was only 40 years ago.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Well, I am ancient, so I'm there with you.
SPEAKER_03All good.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'm the ancient one of the groups, so I mean that that makes sense that I yeah, I'm good with that.
SPEAKER_02We're still all generational is the coolest. Yes, I am. We had the coolest stuff, right?
SPEAKER_04We did. Yeah, you know, I was there for Atari when it came out, so you know, space invaders and all that.
SPEAKER_02First video home video game system I had too. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05My first Coleco vision is then that one came out at the same time.
SPEAKER_02My buddy had a Coleco, we had an Atari, we share each other's game.
SPEAKER_04I miss Space Invaders.
SPEAKER_00I think my favorite toy for the question series uh what was your first piece? Bam was the Batmobile 1972.
SPEAKER_04My birthday.
SPEAKER_02Uh first piece for me. I mean, if I'm really going all the way back, that's my Scooby-Doo plushie.
SPEAKER_04Scooby-Doo, what? It was a plushie at Scooby-Doo.
SPEAKER_02Before they put the little voice in it, and you can pull the string and he can talk to you.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna show you what mine was.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you still have your career bear bear.
SPEAKER_04Well, I had to get it at a pop culture con because I lost it.
SPEAKER_02Aww.
SPEAKER_04But it was fun shine bear.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I we we have a fun shine bear for sale right now from the uh new 40th anniversary collection.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I saw it at a pop culture con. I was with Mombi actually at the Pop Culture Con. Like, Punchai Bear! I got it back.
SPEAKER_02There's nothing like that toy that you had as a kid and just all the memories rush. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04But I had to have it. Oh that was my original. Was this one right here? My fun shine.
SPEAKER_05I still have a lot of my old toys, but most of the oldest are in storage. Because when the kids were little, I'd let them play with some things, but I was kind of scared that they'd break other ones. I had this doll called Julie, and she was animatronic, she would respond to things you said to her, and she took my sister out so bad because whenever you turn the lights off, she could tell and she would say things like, Oh, it's dark in here. That's terrifying, that's creepy. No, no. Sadly, she got old that the glue on the top of her head came off, and so the top of her head is not attached anymore.
SPEAKER_00But she's just from my childhood is actually the Puerto Rican Barbie, and I got it at Eastern Rim, and it was actually uh name escape. James. Yes, I got I got the Puerto Rican Barbie doll from James Jesus. There you go. So I have those up there now. I also made a lead one of the first beanie baby I ever had. And I got that from the retro exchange for hay.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, the other one I had was a red-headed cabbage patch kid. Mine didn't talk. I got dolls that don't talk.
unknownDolls don't need to talk.
SPEAKER_04No, they should not be talking about it.
SPEAKER_00Did we not learn anything from Burbies?
SPEAKER_04Mm-hmm. No. Or what was that? What's that creepy doll, Annie? Is that the one that cre that talks it shouldn't be talking?
unknownSomething like that.
SPEAKER_04What's what's the doll that shouldn't be talking that travels?
SPEAKER_00Oh, Raggedy Ann, but it's known as Annabelle.
SPEAKER_04Yes, that.
unknownYeah. Mommy.
SPEAKER_01Okay, for my Suju, what's yours? Mommy was there for my first one. That was actually was given to me as a gift by James uh nerdguy, nerdcon guy. Yeah, James just spoke it's Zulu.
SPEAKER_04Oh, Zulu. Cool.
SPEAKER_03Oh my Star Trek.
SPEAKER_01Very cool. That's what he says. That's his signature thing. Oh my.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's funny. Very cool.
SPEAKER_03Oh my, what is that we have to say real quick?
unknownIt was a rip it and ripped Batmobile.
SPEAKER_00It had one center view. Wow. Oh got a lot of batteries.
SPEAKER_02So Juju, one of the things that we love that we have here right now is a uh 1960s USS Enterprise Bridge and the five main bridge brew from Niko.
SPEAKER_01So what is your phone number?
SPEAKER_02As a matter of fact, one second. Magically disappearing.
SPEAKER_00You said, hold on, let me show you real quick.
SPEAKER_04Put Super Honey's comment up.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gosh. Magically disappearing.
SPEAKER_04That handsome spark up in there.
SPEAKER_01I I think GG's making a trip to Austin. Oh my gosh. I was just in San Antonio and had to drive through Austin to get to Colleen to go to my girls. I'm thinking she's making a trip to Austin.
SPEAKER_00Tells me that y'all definitely need to swing on up to Bat City Toys. I'm going to get a load of it.
SPEAKER_04It sounds like Bat City has it all. I'm just saying.
SPEAKER_00They even have Hot Wheels, and your girl is also getting into Hot Wheel collecting.
SPEAKER_01Right when you started to finish 1960, I was like panicking. I was like, wait a minute, please.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we go we go back that far.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, you have a lot of unique toys. Like I said, I saw a lot of the pictures online, and then I went on to your actual online store, and you guys had like a ton of stuff and stuff that you I didn't even think you could find anymore. And I was very impressed with what you guys had. So some of the pictures that I had in the reel is not even touching what you guys had online.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, and it and it rotates all the time, you know, because it's about About part what people bring into the store, part what we happen to find out and about. Um and like I said, sometimes we'll be current. You know, we'll get a special run of, you know, recently it was a lot of mo to things for the new Masters first movie coming out. And uh we did the best we could to try to complete the line and just you could walk in here and see every single one of the toys that had come out in that area.
SPEAKER_04Now I do have a question. Do you have people that come and say, hey, do you have this or can you find this? Do you do that?
SPEAKER_02Absolutely, absolutely. So, yeah, we have a uh a running list of things that people have requested or trying to find. And uh the easiest way to add yourself to that list is just message us through our website portal. You'll see that at the bottom of the website. And as we're shopping, as we're finding, as we're dealing with our network, uh, we always check to see if we can pick up any of those items, and then we'll let you know we found it and see if we can make it work for you. Yeah, cool.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. Looks like Texas Toy Hunter says last time I was there, I picked up a vintage C3PO and Chewbacca. He did.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they're staples here at the store, right? You gotta have the original as well from Star Wars.
SPEAKER_04Um, we currently have your Instagram running down below, which is batcity toys B-A-T-C-I-T-Y-T-O-Y-S. Would you like to go ahead and rattle off your website?
SPEAKER_02Yes, it's uh batcitytoys.com.
SPEAKER_04All one word.com.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it's all one word because just like Batman, it's it's Bat C nice.
SPEAKER_04It's the back cave of toys. It is for sure. Yeah, yeah. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_05If you were to point out one thing you wanted people to notice about your store, what would it be?
SPEAKER_02Um that when you walk in here, it's not what you think a vintage toy store would look like. Not at all. Um we it's it's very classic, it's very chic, I may say so myself. Uh well lit, the toys are displayed if you're looking at a CS catalog. Um, all of what we provide is organized by toy type or collection. Um, and you'll enjoy your time here. So it's uh it's not a swap meet, it's a it's a wow factor experience.
SPEAKER_00Might I say as a toy wife and one who doesn't like collect a lot, a lot of this collection that you see is my husband's. Um I like that it's clean, it's clean and it doesn't smell or have a weird like old toy, like you. Like, let's be real, y'all. It doesn't smell like an old goodwill. There you go.
SPEAKER_03Right, right, right.
SPEAKER_00It smells good and it's a clean environment. Well, we were other stuff.
SPEAKER_02We were also born out of you know, just coming out of COVID. And so cleanliness, disinfecting, you know, we you know, especially these vintage stories about other lives and other owners. Um, we want everybody to be safe. So that's that also adds to the fact that we walk in here, you're talking about carrying home any of that you know pre-owned funk.
unknownThat part.
SPEAKER_04Uh I think um Juja and I both cried when we just read Jeremy's comment. You saw my face. Yeah, I think we both did at the same time.
SPEAKER_00Oh, hold on, Jeremy, real quick. I had a metal enterprise that I had for a long time. My daughter loved it growing up until she left it in the driveway and I didn't know and read it over.
SPEAKER_04I think we both cried at the same time.
SPEAKER_01I had a panic attack, like like mid-reading it, and I'm like, oh no, I'm on camera.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, oh boy, boy. Yeah, I think you're both correct.
SPEAKER_00Chemical toy fair last year. You are created for real.
SPEAKER_04That's funny.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04That's awesome. Oh my god. So you have a lot of very unique toys. That's pretty cool, though.
SPEAKER_02We try, we try, yeah. We've got plenty of the standards, but um, you know, we also have things here from manufacturing from South America, uh, from Great Britain, uh, Malaysia. So uh not just what was produced in the United States, obviously our transformers, we have some from Japan, which is awesome. Um, so yeah, from all the world.
SPEAKER_04That's really cool. Well, we have just a few minutes left. Is there anything you'd like to add?
SPEAKER_02Um well, number one, thank you for having me. But number two, uh we hope if you're looking for nostalgia and you're in Austin, come check us out. Uh look for us at uh cons in the greater Texas area. And uh of course check us out online as well at batsignetoys.com.
SPEAKER_04Where's your next Comic Con?
SPEAKER_02Uh actually there's a new one in development. And there's the possibility that we might be part of our aimmates. So uh you you might see an official announcement about that soon, but it's looking like it's gonna be in November.
SPEAKER_04Okay, cool. And we'll see it on your Instagram, I'm assuming.
SPEAKER_02Absolutely.
SPEAKER_04Awesome, cool. Well, Gina, thank you so much. You've been a treat to have on with us, and we really appreciate you coming on and sharing a lot about your toy store um as well as your online store. And so it was really cool talking with you and talking about our toys from the past. So thank you for bringing back some good memories.
SPEAKER_02You bet, you bet.
SPEAKER_04Awesome. Next one, next we're gonna have author John Simmons. So we're excited to have him coming on, same time, same channel. So everybody get your wands to the ready because mommy's going to be taking us out. If we want to see more about Bat City Toys, he's on Instagram, he's online. Check him out and see what he has online for you.
SPEAKER_05All right, guys, thank you every minutes. Make sure to follow us on our social media, uh CJ Peterson, Mombi Rella.
SPEAKER_04Wait, um, Yukita has an announcement to make.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_00Hey guys, so on the real quick, um if you have been keeping up with, I guess, my personal stuff, which I don't expect you to because personal and uh close friends now, and that's okay. But I am currently going back to school and it has quite a load on my plate. My plate is actually a bowl and he's running over. So I'm going to be taking a step back and taking a break from being on the podcast, just like I took a break from doing cosplaying and doing conventions. I I this is a bigger bite than I expected, so I will also now be taking a step back from the podcast. Um I still love the ladies, we're all still close, we're all still best friends and sisters of Christ. I love them all very dearly, and they have been nothing but an amazing support system that they always have been and always will be. And I just wanted to say, well, thank you guys for everything, literally. And uh um keep praying for me because this is this is a lot, but it's gonna be worth it in the end. Um I'm currently going for my degree in psychology, so the girl's got big brains, and I'm trying to learn more about it. So um I'm gonna see if maybe I can get my schedule fixed enough to where um I will be maybe back in January, but I will let you know because again, school is hard. Thanks, super hubby.
SPEAKER_01I count the days for your return. That's bad.
SPEAKER_00So we're all well challenged. It's been a wild ride. Um, I just need to focus on me and my studies. So appreciate y'all.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04Thank you. We love you.
SPEAKER_00Love y'all too.
SPEAKER_04Okay, go ahead, mommy.
SPEAKER_05My dogs are trying to chime in here and here. They want to sign off with you. Uh all of us, you kitty cosplay, the cosplayer, and magic magic myths, of course. And until next time, guys, get your wands up and it's mischief method. There you go.
