We're excited to have you. Gino has everything in his store from retro and vintage toys. I got to see tons of pictures as I was going through his Instagram for men and women and girls and boys alike. And I kind of want to go to his store.

My goodness. Gino has been a staple part of my toy cosplaying career for quite some time now. Every time me and my lovely husband go to visit our cousins in Round Rock, we always, always, always make time to go see Gino at Bat City Toys in Austin. Like, look, got the gear, y'all. If y'all don't got the gear, y'all don't know. Um he's a store. No, when you first walk in, I'm gonna give them a little bit of a spoiler. And when you first walk in, Star Wars. It is a lot of things. On the left, you got He-Man. You go further back, he has a cool little coffee couch, is what I call it in my head. Because there's a little coffee corner for those who require the caffeination. A little couch, he's got a little game room area back there too for like the kiddos and everything. There's an upstairs area where you can take pictures, and there's comic books galore. You guys, if you are into your retro vintage toys, Bat City Toys is where to go in Austin, Texas.

Nice. So how long have you been open?

SPEAKER_02 4:02

Well, in our new location, we've been open for about two months now. Um I started the company about five years ago. But we've had a brick and mortar store for the last three years.

And how did you get into it? What made you start it and that sort of thing? What's your story behind it?

SPEAKER_02 4:24

Yeah, well, well when I was a little kid, I wanted everything with a sudden like all of us. And my dad used to joke with me, chime with me, and said, Well, you know, one day you can get it all for yourself. So uh flashboard, and uh I did, and then my wife looked like said, Okay, now what are you gonna do with all this stuff? So I said, Well, I'm thinking I'm gonna open the store, and that's kind of you know, it was it was more of a tongue-in-cheek kind of an idea. Um, but then I said, Hey, why not? You know, I think Austin needs it. I'd love to bring this out and share this with people, and uh I'm so glad that I did. It's just been a wonderful experience.

Very cool. So, where do you get your toys? Because I know that you've got a lot of different types of toys and a lot of different types of phantoms that are in there.

SPEAKER_02 5:21

Well, when we first opened up the store, about 80% of what was in the store was from my own personal collection. And over the past three years, it's been a mix of what the public has provided, what we've curated. And when I say we, I mean me and my business partners, and quite frankly, my business partners' collections as well have a big part of what makes up the store. So we have a lot of ourselves invested in it, and uh, it's also fun to hear people walk in and go, Oh, I sold you theater, or oh uh I think that was mine, and I sold it to you, and now somebody else is picking it up, and it was there the first time they visited, and it's not there the next time, and they know it's got a new life with a new person who loves it as much as they did.

What's the most nostalgic thing do you have in the store?

SPEAKER_02 6:20

Nostalgic. So, you know, it's funny you say that because our uh uh motto, if you will, is we sell nostalgia. So, quite frankly, we we try to make everything we bring in here brings up nostalgia. And some of the coolest things are when people walk in and they see Teddy Ruxpin and Grubby sitting on top of the arcade machine, or my Alvin from Alvin and the Chipmunks and his lunchbox, or Alf and the Alf lunchbox. Um, and a lot of it is stuff that's not for sale. Uh, we just bring it in so people can connect to it. Masks and cosplay pieces, uh maquettes, helmets, uh, all sorts of things in here bring bring you back.

Yeah, I was looking at the pictures and I saw a different thing, and I'm just the little I'm an 80s kid. So I'm I'm looking at this stuff online and going, oh my gosh, I remember that. Oh, I would get lost in that store. That would not be a good place for me. Yeah, so the hobby would go no.

Yeah, I mean, it's it's I tell people all the time come in, hang out, enjoy. Um, I think what we all miss right now is connecting in society, um, having a homegrown place that's grown, we're homegrown, all local guys with one store, another chain. Um, and even if you don't buy anything, we love you guys to just come in and walk down memory lane. And that's hence the couches and the coffee, right? Come hang out for a while.

Yeah, well what was the craziest part was you know, I was here for about 10 years before Bat City Toys was born. And in that time, I'd been trying to find something that would be the soul of the toy genre here in Austin, like they have in uh Dallas or Houston. And that was a big driver for wanting to do this. And once I opened the store, I finally got to meet a lot of the guys that were trying to do what I was doing, but just couldn't get it to a point of opening a store. So we've tried to include those folks in the store as well, and really create a community of toy lovers, toy hunters, and even some local guys that you know uh sell and trade in toys that weren't all interconnected until we were here to kind of make those connections.

I think the beauty is people our age right now are are we have money and we want the nostalgia toys now, so it's like you were in like the perfect sweet spot.

Well, that's and and that's been a really cool thing, too. It's not just the locals who enjoy this store, but I get a lot of folks that are traveling through, and like myself, everywhere they go, they look for local toy store, and so um, you know, we're we're kind of on the map and and try to bring people through, and you know, hopefully when they walk out of here, they carry a little bit uh uh of nostalgia and pride for Bad City, you know, you know our home.

No, so we uh uh basically we have the brick and mortar, we do online sales as well uh through our website, and yeah, we'll we'll travel around and do shows as well, too.

So as a matter of fact, if you go to Misfit Toys right now, I believe it's still there. There is the biggest place that GI Joe ever created, the USS flag. And that was actually sold out of our store and taken down to Houston, and then Misfit's got it. So we're already sharing stuff.

Collecting pretty much my whole life. Um obviously I thinned it down quite a bit when I started dating because I didn't want to scare anybody off on the ease. So um my wife didn't know what she was getting into, and uh she's still with me today, so obviously I picked well and uh blessed that way.

Uh I think I got so many toys that I wish I could have back over the years. I'm gonna have to start looking for rainbow bright again, again. I miss her, I miss her.

Well, here's a uh little bit of uh fact for you guys most all of the toy lines that we remember, either last year or this year, are hitting their 40th anniversary.

Now Voltron's even older. Uh things like Voltron Transformers, they actually had life in Japan before they came to the US. So those could be approaching the 50-year mark, even though for us it was only 40 years ago.

I still have a lot of my old toys, but most of the oldest are in storage. Because when the kids were little, I'd let them play with some things, but I was kind of scared that they'd break other ones. I had this doll called Julie, and she was animatronic, she would respond to things you said to her, and she took my sister out so bad because whenever you turn the lights off, she could tell and she would say things like, Oh, it's dark in here. That's terrifying, that's creepy. No, no. Sadly, she got old that the glue on the top of her head came off, and so the top of her head is not attached anymore.

But she's just from my childhood is actually the Puerto Rican Barbie, and I got it at Eastern Rim, and it was actually uh name escape. James. Yes, I got I got the Puerto Rican Barbie doll from James Jesus. There you go. So I have those up there now. I also made a lead one of the first beanie baby I ever had. And I got that from the retro exchange for hay.

Oh, yeah, and it and it rotates all the time, you know, because it's about About part what people bring into the store, part what we happen to find out and about. Um and like I said, sometimes we'll be current. You know, we'll get a special run of, you know, recently it was a lot of mo to things for the new Masters first movie coming out. And uh we did the best we could to try to complete the line and just you could walk in here and see every single one of the toys that had come out in that area.

Absolutely, absolutely. So, yeah, we have a uh a running list of things that people have requested or trying to find. And uh the easiest way to add yourself to that list is just message us through our website portal. You'll see that at the bottom of the website. And as we're shopping, as we're finding, as we're dealing with our network, uh, we always check to see if we can pick up any of those items, and then we'll let you know we found it and see if we can make it work for you. Um that when you walk in here, it's not what you think a vintage toy store would look like. Not at all. Um we it's it's very classic, it's very chic, I may say so myself. Uh well lit, the toys are displayed if you're looking at a CS catalog. Um, all of what we provide is organized by toy type or collection. Um, and you'll enjoy your time here. So it's uh it's not a swap meet, it's a it's a wow factor experience.

Might I say as a toy wife and one who doesn't like collect a lot, a lot of this collection that you see is my husband's. Um I like that it's clean, it's clean and it doesn't smell or have a weird like old toy, like you. Like, let's be real, y'all. It doesn't smell like an old goodwill. There you go.

We were also born out of you know, just coming out of COVID. And so cleanliness, disinfecting, you know, we you know, especially these vintage stories about other lives and other owners. Um, we want everybody to be safe. So that's that also adds to the fact that we walk in here, you're talking about carrying home any of that you know pre-owned funk.

We try, we try, yeah. We've got plenty of the standards, but um, you know, we also have things here from manufacturing from South America, uh, from Great Britain, uh, Malaysia. So uh not just what was produced in the United States, obviously our transformers, we have some from Japan, which is awesome. Um, so yeah, from all the world.

I I this is a bigger bite than I expected, so I will also now be taking a step back from the podcast. Um I still love the ladies, we're all still close, we're all still best friends and sisters of Christ. I love them all very dearly, and they have been nothing but an amazing support system that they always have been and always will be. And I just wanted to say, well, thank you guys for everything, literally. And uh um keep praying for me because this is this is a lot, but it's gonna be worth it in the end. Um I'm currently going for my degree in psychology, so the girl's got big brains, and I'm trying to learn more about it. So um I'm gonna see if maybe I can get my schedule fixed enough to where um I will be maybe back in January, but I will let you know because again, school is hard. Thanks, super hubby.
