The immersion is taken a step further with the visual edition of the series available on Youtube. The story is brought to life with detailed backgrounds of each scene and partially animated characters. Cerulean Summer’s unique, striking visual style is comparable to that of an ‘American anime’. Hi guys. I'm Mom Virella.
SPEAKER_07Juju Jones here. I'm CJ Peterson. Welcome to Magic Mickey Mischief Kitcher Wands to the ready, everybody. Because we, like everybody in, we solemnly swear we're up to no good. And speaking of up to no good, we are on a new streaming service. So you're gonna have to bear with me. We were able to get rid of our pixies because we had to change over services. We gave up on StreamYard. Um, we're currently on restream and we will explain everything next week when we head over to um Nerd Talk. But until then, you're gonna have to bear with me as we are doing things a little bit different. Um, but we have with us our wands made first by Jeremy Vanders since 2024. We have all the pretty, pretty, pretty, pretties, all the different variations since Shaket isn't here to introduce. So uh we already have some people here. We have uh thoroughly looking forward to this.
SPEAKER_09Oh, our comments look fancy.
SPEAKER_07I know, right? People are joining us here already.
SPEAKER_10By the way, for those who stuck with us through the last two really echoey podcasts, thank you. Much love, and we are so happy to get rid of the echo.
SPEAKER_07Yes, we do still have our magic, so super excited. Um, that was good. We no longer have our little ticker that explains everything about what's going on, but we have with us today, super, super excited. I've watched the trailer, I love it. Mombi's watched a few of the episodes. The crew from Cerulean Summer, which can be watched on YouTube on a playlist. So um, I think I'm missing one though. Hold on, where is he? He he actually jumped out. No, he's here. He's here, everybody's here. Okay, everybody. I'm excited. Well, it's great. Like screen was blank initially.
SPEAKER_08So she hit the bottom for the podcast, guys. We're gonna take it easy.
SPEAKER_04We made him appear with our wands. We were like, whoo.
SPEAKER_07Um everybody came, everybody in Mayship was managed, but we're gonna we're gonna we're gonna make a little bit more mischief happen today. Um, so thank you all. Um thank you all for your for your little bit of patience over the last few last few podcasts. Um, we weren't able to have it last week, but again, we're back today. Um, so thank you guys. If you guys wouldn't mind introducing your actual name and your character name and kind of briefly explain what your character does because it's an interesting concept. Um, I I read your name, who your character is, and what they are, and I am actually really curious to watch it. Um I'm excited.
SPEAKER_10I just finished the last episode, actually, right before we came on, and I was it I did tell you guys cliffhanger, expect cliffhangers.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, why don't we go why don't we go ladies first?
SPEAKER_10It's like listening to an anime audio, like like literally. Okay, y'all introduce yourselves, please. Totally, totally, totally.
SPEAKER_04So, me first, yeah, ladies first. Okay, awesome. Well, my name is Melissa Del Toro Schaffner, and I play Minnie, who is, I guess, the main, there's so many main characters in this uh audio drama, visual audio drama, but my character is Minnie, and she is the lead protagonist, I guess is how they formally call it. And she's 17 years old, right? Blake, I'm 17, or have I, or was I 16?
SPEAKER_06You're 17.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. 17 years old. And um, I traveled with my archaeologist parents until I got sick of it, and then one summer I spend it in Cerulean just to get away from it all with my grandparents who are currently not here. Um oh, my grandparents aren't here, but the grandparents in this show are here, just not on this podcast. Grandma and Baba. Um so yeah, she decides to kind of take a break. She meets Trace, and he has a condition that is, you know, a challenge to have. And so all of us get to know each other, and then we meet uh Frankville as uh Leo. And um, yeah, so it's a very paranormal sort of Scooby-Doo meets spirited away kind of show. And um after that I will hand it off to my daughter Indy.
SPEAKER_01Hi, my name is Indy, and I play Charlotte in Cerulean Summer. Uh, but there's I I can't really I can't really say anything about that, but she plays a good character.
SPEAKER_07Let's put it that way. She plays an interesting character, let's put it that way. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_10It's it's a surprise when she pops up. I gotta say, I was like, oh my gosh. Okay, that I I I know y'all don't want to give away too many spoilers until I get into it, but like her character's adorable. I'm just gonna say that. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Next, Franklin Okay. Hi guys, um, nice to meet you all. I'm Frank Vilandre Potinales. I'm from the Philippines, and I play the uh most loving loving character of the entire show. Uh Leo. He is a lot to handle when you first meet him, but eventually, uh hopefully in the later stories, you'll eventually come to realize why he's like that. But right now, he's a very an eccentric character. He'll he'll get under your skin for the wrong and right reasons. So uh yeah.
SPEAKER_07That's an interesting way to put it. Go ahead, Blake. Oh, we can't.
SPEAKER_02So for me, um, hello? There we go. Okay. Um I'm Blake Cogdill. I play Trace in Cerulean Summer, uh, who's kind of the straight man to Minnie and Leo's craziness, if you want to call it that. Um he's kind of the train on the on the tracks, if you will, keeping us all in in line, um, who is also suffering with this terrible condition, and he is seemingly marked for death. We will see in following episodes, possibly due to his debilitating heart condition. Uh fingers crossed, he doesn't, though.
SPEAKER_07Well, we have a nice comment. Um it says, I love Cerulean Summer and I love the cast. The show is without a doubt one of the rare gems that only come along every once in a while been watching from the start.
SPEAKER_10Hello. Thank you. Okay, so I'm gonna ask this question first off because the casting, speaking of that, like y'all all do such an amazing job voicing these characters. You really bring the story to life, and it's not just actually the there's background sounds and stuff, so it's kind of like an immersive, a whole immersive thing. And uh she actually does the art for it, right? Herself, is that right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Keiko did the character art and Bosco does the background scenery art. So as a pair, they're just dynamite.
SPEAKER_10Okay, yeah, it's great. It's not it's not a movie, just explain this, guys. Hopefully, y'all understand what I'm saying. Like it's not a movie, but they have like uh art and pictures and stuff that comes and goes with the uh story that you're listening to. So it really does bring it to life. It's really great. I don't always get a chance to watch the art every time, so I can listen to it as well. And if you're just listening to it, it actually is very immersive too. But how did y'all get um how did y'all get the parts that y'all have in this? How did they do the casting?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, because you guys are kind of all over, are you?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um, yeah, we are. I Indy and I are in Arizona, Frankville is in Ireland, and um Blake is in Denver, Colorado. So yeah, we're all over the place. All over the place. How'd she find you? Uh, I guess uh I'll go first. Um, she actually put the the audition call out on X on Twitter, I believe, the original one, and I didn't see it, but she uh ended up emailing a few people that she was kind of looking for specific storytelling type people, sort of characters. And so uh for me, she heard my podcast, uh Untold Tales, and she also saw my stories from the heart uh playlist on YouTube, which I did 10 episodes just trying something out, you know. So um, and she saw it and she loved it. So she emailed me and asked me, would you please audition for this part? I would like to see, you know, what you can do. And uh yeah, the rest is history. Um as for Indy, her story is more interesting, right, Indy?
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, way more interesting. Very, very um she she puts me on like some of her projects. So whenever she has a project, she'll be like, Hi, hey Indy, do you wanna be this character? It'll be like a child character or something. So I usually do that. And she came to me and she asked me, Hi, do you want to be this character in this show that I'm gonna be in? And I'm like, uh, okay. I thought it was gonna be like a one-episode thing, like she usually asked me to do.
SPEAKER_04Um I tricked her. Oh no. Yeah, I I emailed Keiko and I told her when I saw the script breakdown of the characters, I said, Keiko, I have a 10-year-old daughter. She's very talented. She she's done some voice acting for Untold Tales. Would you mind if she auditioned? And plus, we come as a two-for-one deal, so that might be really, you know, easy for you. So I think she was sold on Indy's performance more than the the convenience. Yeah. There you go. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07But what about you guys?
SPEAKER_00Uh same thing, really. Uh I found it while I was just uh scrolling on Twitter or X just looking for stuff to audition. And then boom, lo and behold, there was a character, an Asian character, which is like whoa, that's a hard that's rare to find. So I looked into it and it was a Filipino character. So authenticity is already there. So I I remember I was in college at the time, and uh I really wanted to audition for this as soon as possible. So I went into the in-studio booth, uh the studio uh vocal booth in campus, and I just recorded myself there and sent it over. Uh I think one of the voice references was Dante Bosco, if you don't know like Zuko from Avatar. And I was like, okay, yeah, that's definitely out of my range. So I did I tried it, I got back. I really like your voice. I'll keep in touch. Weeks passed by, you're in. Whoa! That's awesome.
SPEAKER_10Wow. Nice.
SPEAKER_02And then for me, um, so I also saw the casting call on X um initially, though I have a difference in background compared to everyone else here, uh, in that I was working with Keiko for about a year roughly before I even knew that Cerulean Summer was a project. Uh, she's my current and probably forever vocal coach. Um Keiko, recommend her services. Um, but she told me during, I think it was one of our sessions together that she was um either casting for something or putting together something. Uh and I told her to keep me posted, which she did. Um, I got sent the casting call in addition to seeing it elsewhere I was gonna audition for it, regardless of if it was sent to me or not. Um I auditioned, and then during again, a few weeks pass, uh, and then during one of our later sessions, uh, she goes, Hey, uh, do you mind turning on your camera for a moment? And I'm like, Okay. What's happening? What are we doing here? I'm I being punked. Um, I turn on my camera. Um, she asks if she can record me for a moment. I'm like, yeah, of course. Absolutely. Um, actually, I think I recorded either way. Um, she says, Hey, yeah, you have the chops to play Trace in Cerulean Summer. Uh, we would happily enjoy your company along for this wild ride. And that's the end of it. We we've been going strong since.
SPEAKER_07Very cool. Um, we have a few comments. Uh, Trav says, Super hubby says learning the new system, kind of like the new layout. Uh meanwhile, Malay Entertainment. I'm assuming Keiko sends it.
SPEAKER_03Oh, hi Keiko.
SPEAKER_07Um, also, I adore the Ghibli vibes the show gives me to find something close to that billing is so special. I love to know what you think gives the Cerulean Summer those special ghibli vibes. And Keiko also sent uh pink popcorn.
SPEAKER_04How sweet.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, honestly, that's when I say it's like listening to an anime, uh I I absolutely get the studio ghibli vibes. That is, I agree with that because it has heart, it has humor, it has you know, just the the story keeps you it's compelling, it keeps you involved, and and not just because the cliffhangers at the end. Okay, you don't have to make it quite so harsh as the I don't trust Leo. I gotta be on don't apologize. Okay, wait. So shouldn't we be concerned or not? Because uh this character, man. Okay, no, you do a really good job. I can hear the Dante Basco a little bit in there now that she's there some inspiration from that. I love him. I got to meet him at um an anime con one time. Nicest, coolest guy actually ever. So yeah, that's a good inspiration. Um, do y'all have okay? Wait, hold on. Speaking of studio ghibli, are y'all studio ghibli fans? Do you have a favorite?
SPEAKER_04Yes, absolutely. Which one do you face? No face. No face is her husband, by the way. You can't date him because he's her husband. Just to let you know. Happily married, happily married. I love it. Yeah, oh my goodness. Um, we love Pono too. We love Pono.
SPEAKER_10There's not a bad studio, Mary. Honestly, like they're also got Torturo, uh, House Moving Castle. Okay, sorry. I could go on.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, House Moving Castle, Kiki, Kiki's delivery service. She Pink Popcorn asks what gives it the studio Ghibli vibe. And I think it's a lot of the background art, honestly, and also just uh authenticity, like just that soft, natural feel of everyday life. It you know what I mean? Like, even if you just listen to it, it's kind of like that that cadence of just living your life and you know, not overdoing anybody, not over sexualizing somebody or not over doing anything, just kind of like that gentle way of life. That's that's the way I would describe why it's like that. But I don't know. I don't know if anybody thinks I'm crazy. It's kind of like Blake, it's kind of like a vacation feeling, is how I would describe it.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, gotcha. Totally um super hubby says that he can only see part of us, and if you're on your cell phone, it's that portrait view. Try scrolling. Maybe that's how you can see the rest of us. So just oh yeah.
SPEAKER_09Is it opposition? Are we on the do we need to center?
SPEAKER_07Yeah, maybe no, it's because of the portrait view versus the landscape view. Gotcha. So just he's mentioned it a couple times, so I'm just telling you guys.
SPEAKER_03Are we not good enough? Just kidding.
SPEAKER_07I don't know. It's just it's just the way they're on there. Um, another one says, I feel strong characters. Oh, it makes the story less. The cerelian summer characters are top-notch. What is your favorite thing about each one of your characters? Hmm, that's a good question.
SPEAKER_04What do you think?
SPEAKER_05You don't oh, she said go she said pass, double it and give it to the next person.
SPEAKER_01Hold on, hold on, someone's talking.
SPEAKER_04No, it's Frankville. No, it's Frankville, it's Frankville.
SPEAKER_07Okay, sorry. I can't really tell. I can't see very well. You're so smart.
SPEAKER_00You're okay. Uh one thing I really like about Leo is the personality because he is the complete opposite of me. I would never in a million years do anything that he would be doing. I would just be in my own little world, but it's nice to do something that isn't in my comfort zone, you know.
SPEAKER_04He's kind of like a villain, if you think about it, you know, in a way.
SPEAKER_10Leo's kind of got I can foresee like a very good character arc coming for Leo at this point. He's in like transition from the almost bully to yeah, so he's heading somewhere with it.
SPEAKER_05Awesome.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I have a question for Andy. What's it like working with your mom? Is it cool or is it you know, like that's what you do because you love your mom?
SPEAKER_04You could be honest.
SPEAKER_05I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I never really thought about it.
SPEAKER_05Like do you have a good time doing it?
SPEAKER_01Uh it depends.
SPEAKER_05I love your honest team.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, some days she's tired. Like these sessions last probably how long?
SPEAKER_02Like, like usually either an hour to yeah, hour to four or five hours, I would say.
SPEAKER_04Oh, you are a trooper, Indy. Yeah, so sometimes she's in and out, in and out, and sometimes we keep her here because she's a big part of the episode. So it's it can be kind of a lot because we do two or three read-throughs of each of each scene. So just to get a bunch, a bunch of stuff. And Indy doesn't like to read it ahead of time like I do. Like we're kind of like total up opposites when it comes to how we do things. Like, I like to prepare, I read it, I read everyone else's.
SPEAKER_01I prefer not to read ahead because when I read ahead, then it it feels like it's I'm spoiling it for myself.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_01I like that look. Also, also, I prefer to like read it and experience it with my character, because then it would kind of it would be like, well, I already know everything that's gonna happen, so what's the point at this at this yeah stage?
SPEAKER_04Well, I'm the opposite. I want to know every single thing that happens. So if I have to eat, I have food with me in the booth. You know, if I have to drink or slurp something, I have so I kind of prepare and then I kind of pull her in, and then she does her thing. But um, I don't know, we do a lot of stuff together, so this is just one more thing we can add to our repertoire. That's awesome.
unknownI love it.
SPEAKER_07I'd probably be one of those character people who would be like, I'm gonna wait and see what's gonna happen as it comes along, type people.
SPEAKER_10I don't know, you're a little OCD for that. I I don't know if I believe that.
SPEAKER_07I wouldn't want to read ahead though. I mean, I would read ahead like as it comes, but you know how I write. I write by the seat of my pants. I'm an author.
SPEAKER_09That's true, that's true.
SPEAKER_10I I don't I I don't I'm not a planner, so with the whole cast together, though, I think you'd be more nervous. How do y'all do y'all's recordings since y'all are all over the place? Like sorry, principally like how do y'all know it's like do y'all do y'all sorry? Do y'all do it all at the same time? Do y'all do it like online together?
SPEAKER_02Or how do y'all have to available for each session? I would say. Um because most sessions we have nearly everybody there. We have one or two stragglers usually, just because there are so many folks now. Um back when like we had episodes one, two, and three, we got to do them all together at the same time. Um, but if anyone's in like a time crunch, typically we get their their scenes done first. That way they can head off to whatever they need to head off to.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And this newest casting call, I think it was four or five, Blake or Frankville correct me. Was it five? Um, we just cast uh a little five-year-old. So he recorded his lines with his daddy in in his dad's booth. He's a very, very famous voice actor as well, Mr. Tom Aglio. His son Zachary um has a role in the in the the audio drama as well. So yeah, so we we piece it together, you know. If we can all get together, great. If no, somebody can't, then Keiko will do the other, you know, the other character reads.
SPEAKER_03And it's a lot of fun when Keiko does the other reading the other characters. I think probably Frank Phil and Blake would agree. It's especially awesome.
SPEAKER_07Speaking of Keiko, um she happened to say that Leo has a good heart and lots of backstory. We'll be delving into upcoming episodes. She loves you so much, Frank Phil. Um, also, Pink Popcorn says, I love this cast so much. Face for book crying. Thank you for all the working, for all the working so hard to bring the story to life for us. Face Red Heart. Sweet. Um, we love you. Two pink popcorn. Cousin Marissa says hi. Jeremy Vanders, the maker of our wands. Hi, Jeremy. Yay. Yay. Um okay. Here's one. Pink popcorn says Emma Lamp Chase OMG. Love Leo so much. She's seriously become one of my all-time favorite characters. Really can't see what comes with the story. Face, red, heart, shape, face, red, heart, shape, face, red, heart, shape. Apparently, she really likes you. That's awesome. Or he.
SPEAKER_05I think he needs one more face heart. Apparently, they really like your character.
SPEAKER_10Uh actually, Blake, I have a question for you. I wanted to ask about Trace. So um, with his his character, it's funny because like he's very uh he's going through a lot, obviously, because he has this serious health condition, but he's very courageous, very kind. What do you think about the personality? How do you bring that personality to life for this character?
SPEAKER_02Truly, it comes very easily to me. Um, because there's a very specific archetype I love in in really any media, um, whether it's like horror, Resident Evil gives off these characters a lot of the time. Uh, just in one of the newest, biggest blockbusters of all time, Project Hell Mary just came out. Um, it's the character put in one of the worst situations imaginable, still putting on a brave face and coming out of it earning more. That is my favorite archetype of all time, which makes it very easy to play trace because he that is my favorite. He is that archetype. He is just this kid who has one more summer in him before you know he passes on, uh, not really knowing what he's gonna do with it. And now he has something to do, and that's go and check out ghosts in cool manners and watch Frankville scream. Oh my goodness.
SPEAKER_10I have to admit, the humor has got me like like in the uh I was re-listening to the old ones and listening to the newest one, and I'm just like, oh, this is such a fun, uh it's such a fun series, like it's just like it has such heart to it because it has the humor, and yet it's still got a lot of serious stuff happening at the same time, and it just it really does. It's such a deep thing, it's a very con you get very connected to it because of it. Y'all, y'all do an amazing job with this project, honestly. Like, I can't say enough about it.
SPEAKER_07But that is a question. Is it hard to play such a heavy character? Because that is a heavy role to play.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I would say so. When I was first, um, I guess when we were all like given because we all we all had a had a a briefing of some kind, I remember when when we first started, we got the presentation of what this project was going to be and like the basic outlines of who everyone was. I think you were there, Melissa. I think India was.
SPEAKER_04I was I was there, yeah.
SPEAKER_02This was like for episode one, so we had like skeleton crew very early on, not a whole lot of people there yet.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, um Chloe Elmore was there, Sandra. Yeah, Sandra, his Trace's mom, not Blake's mom, Trace's mom.
SPEAKER_02Um and I had no idea what I was in store for with Trace because his heart condition I don't think was listed on the actual audition for spoiler reasons.
SPEAKER_08Oh wow, okay.
SPEAKER_02So I I got the role, I was like, this guy kind of looks like me when I was younger. That's pretty interesting. Um, go through, go through, go through. We get to the the day of when we all met, um, and she goes over each of our characters and to me uh explains the heart condition and that it would be fatal if you know left untreated with which Trace doesn't want to be treated for. And I was immediately like, okay, all right. Wow. Okay, let's see what I can do here. The series is supposed to be happy, are we sure? How many episodes do we cover? Is he gonna make it that far? Um no, it was it was it's really an honor, honestly, because you know, I'd imagine most, if not everyone on planet Earth has dealt with loss and grief before or losing some type of family member or person closest to them. Um and I don't know, I hope that in in this portrayal of it we see them as more uh uh human and uh we uh like see them as someone to be celebrated rather than someone that we're going to mourn eventually.
SPEAKER_04For sure, for sure.
SPEAKER_02So I think in in that it's just a nice little come together moment.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. It's kind of like that. Fred Rasley was saying when um he read the part where he died. He was like the tran guy goes, I want your ticket. And he goes, I just died, dude. Let me deal with this. Um okay, there's a couple things. Uh, one says the show has so much heart and feels truly worthwhile. These type of the the type that leaves a lasting impression for a few viewers. What is the main takeaway you hoped they have? That was a good question.
SPEAKER_04I I feel like can I answer this one? Because I feel like Mini, like Trace uh provides the ballast for this show, but Minnie sort of rides the all of the waves. Uh, whenever we found out about Trace's heart condition, there was a lot of crying and screaming between me and Sandra and Minnie and Sandra. And um can you repeat the question?
SPEAKER_07What is the main takeaway you hope they have?
SPEAKER_04Um, so the main takeaway that I hope that they have is that um with love, everything is possible. I mean, that's basically the whole show is that uh they have a passion for helping Charlotte do what it is that she's they're going to do, which you have to tune in and find out. Um then just Minnie's commitment to Trace is completely one of love. She knows that if this is his last summer, it's gonna be the best damn summer ever, and she's gonna make sure of it. So yeah.
SPEAKER_07Okay, one more says, I love to hear all of you say something in a character's voice is if you don't know. Oh my goodness. We have one minute left. Is that possible?
SPEAKER_04Oh come on, porco, you baloney monster.
SPEAKER_02He's such a pig. I named him Porco.
SPEAKER_04Used to say uncle.
SPEAKER_05She said she said no. No, India.
SPEAKER_08Would you say the Uncle Leo line?
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_08Would you say the Uncle Leo line? I'm gonna call him Uncle Leo.
SPEAKER_03No, Uncle Uncle. Did he say Uncle Leo? He's so cute or so uh I don't remember. I think that is, I think that is what she said. She loves Uncle Leo. She's so he's adorable.
SPEAKER_10When you first said it, I was just like, oh my gosh. Okay, all right. I guess we're gonna end up like in this character after all, because she's too cute to like not like adopt somebody.
SPEAKER_07Okay, one more.
SPEAKER_04Frank Phil.
SPEAKER_00Frank Phil is your favorite line. Uh I'll be honest, I can't think of anything on the spot where most of them are just me scraming my head off.
SPEAKER_04Or it'd be a spoiler, probably, if you haven't seen it yet. So, yeah, there's a spoiler, that's why he came out.
SPEAKER_07Okay, no worries. Well, thank you guys so much for joining us. You guys are awesome. There is a playlist of Cerulean Summer on the actual YouTube.
