Is good, good people. You are not listening to another episode of Since We Last Spoke with Danny Foxworth. I am your humble narrator, Danny Foxworth, and I'm quite literally fresh from the airport, fresh off of my weekend excursion to Dallas, Texas. And I'm going to get into everything. In retrospect, man, that was a much needed trip and got to meet more internet friends in real life. And we'll get into all of that. We'll get into all the nuts and bolts of my trip. So let's take it all the way back to the very beginning. So I got up about 3.15 Saturday morning to uh finish packing and get ready for my flight. So my Uber pulled up to the house around 4 in the morning and took me to the airport, uh, got checked in and whatnot. And flight was supposed to leave at 6.30, and it ended up getting pushed back about 45 minutes. So the flight actually left at 7.15. And so that was a smooth flight. I was a little worried with the flight being delayed that that may affect the uh the success of me catching my connecting flight. And I barely made my connecting flight. First connection was in Nashville. And whenever we touched down in Nashville and got to the gate, they were already halfway through the boarding process. And the gate was over on the opposite side of the airports. I was like Usain Bolt style booking it to my gate. And I quite literally was the fourth to last person to get on the planes. I made it on my connecting flight by the skin of my teeth, but wheels were up and left Nashville and took a 45-minute flight to Little Rock, Arkansas, for my second connection. Next from Little Rock to Dallas, was on that same plane. So I basically just stayed on the plane. And that flight from Little Rock to Dallas, there was literally like eight people on that plane. And so the less people on the plane, the more snacks I got. And big shout out to Southwest Airlines, boy. They really upped their game with the in-flight snacks. Because I tell you what, them jokers were busting. They had the shelled pistachio kernels and they had these honeygram crackers, and they had these jalapeno ranch flavored pretzel sticks. And then the flight attendant came back, she was like, Would you like some more pretzels? I was like, please, and thank you. And there were some lime-flavored pretzel sticks as well. I got Sprite and I got coffee. I'll tell you what, I really felt like a king with just the abundance of in-flight snacks that I got. So that flight was about an hour from Little Rock to Dallas and then touched down to a Lovefield airport. And this is my first time using Turo car rental. I wasn't familiar with them until the good brother Ant from Random Axe Podcast mentioned that he used them on a recent trip. I was like, huh. And then when I heard him talking about it, I'm like, this looks like it sounds like something I might need to tap into. And I'm very impressed. The process was seamless. Turo is basically like an Airbnb for with vehicles. I booked my vehicle and then just basically just corresponded with the uh guy that was renting the vehicle out of him via message. And the process was extremely easy, extremely seamless. Get to your car and take pictures on the inside and outside around the car and then message them, notifying them that you're here to pick the car up. And they unlocked the car. Key was in the center console, and you just go on about your business. Left the airport and made the drive to uh Cedar Hill, Texas, which is a suburb of Dallas. And I got to finally meet the good brother Bushrod. Bushrod, man, I tell you what, to say it was an absolute pleasure to meet you in real life is a gross understatement. So I got to stay with him and his lovely wife for the duration of my stay. A little backstory. Bushrod and I have been internet friends, gosh, it's been at least 10 years. And we found a common ground through the Firestarter podcast. Got to his house. One thing I got to say about Texas: the idea of highways in Texas is much different from the idea of a highway in South Carolina. Because I was on I-35 and then the GPS said take highway 67. I'm thinking this is going to be just like a standard two-lane highway. Oh no. Texas U.S. highways are exponentially different. Texas highways are basically interstates in itself. And I was like, holy smokes. I had no idea. Last time I was in Dallas was 2014, and a lot has changed in the 12 years since I've been there. This is about a 30-minute drive from the airport to Bushrod's house. And I pull up, knock on the door, he opens it, we greet with a dap and a big bear hug, and we basically just sat down on the couch and just talked about our favorite fire starter moments and our favorite tanks. And that was it was just like, you know, just catching up with a long-lost friend. And so we just chilled out for a couple of hours and then the afternoon rolled along. We got up, we got dressed, and we rolled out. And he took me to Bucky's, which is the customary Texas thing to do. He took me to Bucky's and we had a uh had my brisket sandwich and he got some things. And then after we left Bucky's, we made our way to the Texas Rangers game. This is my first Rangers game since 2014, so this is the first time that I'm going to the new ballpark, which thank God is it's got a roof and it's climate control. Because as we were walking to the stadium, because the old ballpark is literally right across the street from the new ballpark. I don't know if they're still using it or not. But I was like, man, that's so many fond memories watching old Rangers games there. And I wish they would have kept it open. But once we got through security and got inside the ballpark, and that AC hit me in the face, I'm like, you know what? That was the dumbest thing I could have thought by them keeping Rangers games playing at the old ballpark because that AC felt wonderful because it was oppressively hot in Dallas that Saturday. We got to our seats and just really nice seats along the first base. It was a weekend series against their arch rival, the Houston Astros, and this was the last series before the All-Star breaks. They ended up getting an ass whooped 9-3, but all in all, like the atmosphere was great. There's not a bad seat in the house, and it was just an all-around swell experience. Albeit the Rangers just got their teeth kicked in, but that's the way baseball goes, to quote the legendary Ron Washington. After we left the stadium, we uh got in this truck and we made our way to downtown Dallas, and we made a stop at the cigar lounge called Elf Jefe Cigar Lounge. Now, I don't smoke cigars, but I'm off for new experiences and new adventures. So this is my first time actually being in the cigar lounge. And it was a really cool, just really chill vibe, man. I really dug it. Like vintage couches, vintage seats, beautiful paintings on the walls, and Bushrod uh had his cigar and I had my uh bottle of Sprite. And we sat and watched the UFC fight, and I'm really not an MMA guy, but we watched the uh UFC fights, and the main event was Conor McGregor. And I cannot remember the guy that he fought, but yeah, it went bad for Conor McGregor real quick. Just ended up blowing his knee out on the first kick, and I know everybody was let down by the outcome of that fight. I was indifferent, but there was just the experience of just being in that particular setting. It was real cool. Real black, whole lot of black folks in there. And Bushwright introduced me to the owner of the cigar lounge, real solid cat. If you're ever in the Dallas area and you're looking for a cigar lounge, shout out to El Jefe Cigar Lounge. And at this point, it's like getting late, and I'm running on fumes because again, I woke up at 3.15 Saturday morning to catch my flight. And by the time we get back to Bushrod's house, it's midnight. So I'm literally have been up for the last 21 hours. I need to go ahead and get upstairs and crash and get me some rest. So did that, got up Sunday morning and got to catch up with my good internet friend. Shout out to my dog Dro. I got to meet him for the first time at the Black Guy Who Tips live show in Charlotte. And we were texting back and forth. He's like, man, let's meet up for brunch on Sunday. I was like, all right, bet. He said, ask Bushrod to give some brunch suggestions. And Bushrod, shout out to you for suggesting Breakfast Brothers in Arlington because that food was incredible. And I was a I had my guard up slightly because I'm looking at the menu, and simultaneously I realized my shrimp and grits levels were extremely low. So I ordered the shrimp and grits, which was to me a gamble, being that Dallas is not really surrounded by water. I live close to the ocean, so there's never a shortage of fresh seafood where I'm from. So I was a little leery at first, but man, they put their foot in that shrimp and grits. That thing was so good. And Dro ended up getting the uh the fried catfish with fries, and he could not stop raving about the catfish. He was like, man, this is some of the best catfish I ever had. And I gotta get back here more often because I'm really impressed with this place, and I was impressed with it too. Just beautiful atmosphere, no beautiful staff. That I'm sure, but Lord have mercy, she was fine as frog hair. But the food was great, and I definitely recommend you hitting up Breakfast Brothers if you're ever in the DFW. After we left, went back to Bushwatt's house, and we changed clothes and went out to the ballpark to catch another Rangers game because this game, it was an early game. This one is at 135. The Rangers took the commanding lead, and then Astros crawled back, took the lead in the eighth inning, and then the Rangers tied it back up in the ninth, and then they ended up going in extra innings, and then get to the bottom of the 10th inning. Wyatt Langford leads off with a double, and then I wish I could remember who the next batter was, but he hits a single, and the win and Wyatt Langford scores the winning run, and the Rangers walk it off in a very sweet fashion. And that was actually the first time that I've gone to a Rangers home game and they've won. First Rangers home game I went to was back in 2009. And from 2009 until Saturday night, every time I attended the game, they lost. But this wasn't the case. They won on a walk-off, and what a way to go out leading into the all-star break. So big shout out to the Rangers for getting the job done. That was awesome. So then after that, we left. And before we got back to his house, he showed me around the neighborhood and showed me some of the neighboring high schools. And they do things different in Texas in terms of high school football. And he was just showing me the high schools and the football stadiums, and my mind was so blown. Like these look like college football stadiums. And these are high school kids that attend these schools. And I remember him saying one of the bigger schools in Texas had an enrollment of 8,000 students, which is hard for me to wrap my mind around because when I was in high school, our student enrollment was like 1,100. So it was crazy. Showed me those schools and then went back, went back to the crib, and him and his wife threw some stuff on the grill, and it went down. They had some uh some chicken thighs and some steak. And I get a steak like maybe once every three or four years because I'm not much of a red meat guy, and I like steak, but steak doesn't like me. But you I'm like, you know what? You're on vacation, live a little. So eat you some steak. And I ate some steak, and everything was delicious. And the Caesar salad was great, and she made homemade ice cream that she actually turned the ice cream into uh almost like a chocolate clerk, and she added uh the pecans to it, and that thing was so good. And uh so we had that and just chilled out and uh watched some summer league, and then it was time for me to go to bed. I could feel my eyelids getting heavy, so I was like, man, I'll holler at you tomorrow. And then and then Monday went to the gym and came back, took a quick afternoon nap, and then uh another internet friend of mine that I got to meet for the first time, shout out to Marcy. She lives out in DeSoto, which is it's probably about a 20-minute drive from the house. So I went and visited her, and that was beautiful. It was beautiful. And we sat and chatted it up for about an hour, talking about everything from our upbringings to the Rangers and things going on in Dallas, and I got to meet her daughter, and it was a good time. Marcy, shout out to you, and I will definitely be hitting you up next time I come back to Texas. And then after I left and went back to the crib, we just had some snacks, and uh Bushrod's wife made some BLTs, hot off the press, and we sat and watched a home run derby. And shout out to Jordan Walker for pulling off the victory in enemy territory against Kyle Schwaber and the uh the Phillies crowd. That was that was awesome to watch. And I had some of the leftover proof that they that they grilled from the from the previous night. Just a great way to wind down on a Monday. And after that, I felt my eyelids start to get a little heavy, so I was like, you know what, I'm gonna call it a night. And but this is my last sleep before I gotta pack my bags and get ready to head back to Monk's Corner. Took a shower and went to bed, then got up the next morning, packed my stuff up, made uh one more round downstairs and had some coffee. Him and his wife really went above and beyond accommodating their guests. They had snacks galore, they had candy galore, fresh pot of coffee every morning, and I ate good. I ate good. Man, I was I left there extremely satisfied. Tuesday morning, well, which is this morning. Because I walked downstairs and nobody was up yet, and then Bushwart comes out, he's getting ready to head to work. He works in downtown Dallas, and basically he was like, Man, pleasure is all mine. Anytime you would come to Dallas, you know you got a place to stay. And we dapped and bear hugged, and he went to work, and I left and went to the airport. Went and returned my rental back to the uh to the parking garage and then checked in. Smooth sailing. And this time the flight back from Dallas to Charleston was a one-way flight. So just straight shot. And flight was supposed to leave at 12:15. It was about a 30-minute delay. There was some issues going over some of the passengers, but that got iron out and made the two-hour direct flight from Dallas back to Charleston. And got back to Charleston about four o'clock, and my mom came and picked me up, and now I'm back home in Monks Corner, South Carolina. So that was that was a very necessary trip. You really don't know how bad you need to step away from your environs until you're actually away from your environs and throwing work on the shelf for a minute just to go go enjoy life. And I say that to say if you got PTO, use that PTO. They're literally paying you to not come to work. So utilize that PTO. I don't care how you use it or what you use it for, if you got it, use it. Quit being tough. Take some days off. All that grinding stuff is gonna wear you out. Treat yourself. So that's gonna do it for this episode of Since We Last Spoke.
