Episode 141: How to Calm Your Nervous System

Autumn Carter/ Nadar Yasin Season 1 Episode 141

Feeling overwhelmed or untethered lately? This episode is a gentle exhale.

In Episode 141, Autumn sits down with Nazar Yasin, co-founder and CEO of Sol, to explore how living with purpose can calm the nervous system and transform mental health. Drawing on both science and personal insight, Nazar explains why purposeful or spiritual activity acts like exercise for the brain—boosting social, emotional, physical, and mental health while reducing anxiety, depression, addiction, and even suicide risk.

You’ll discover just how powerful simple daily rituals can be—like moving through nature, practicing compassion, engaging in creative expression, meditating or journaling—in shifting your inner state toward peace. Nazar also dives into the neuroscience of connection through oxytocin, the importance of belonging, and the power of resilience when life feels uncertain.

Episode 141: How to live on Purpose with Nazar Yasin

[00:00:00] Introduction and Guest Overview

[00:00:00] Autumn Carter: This is episode 1 41.

[00:00:04] Welcome to Wellness In Every Season, the podcast where we explore the rich tapestry of wellness in all of its forms. I'm your host, autumn Carter, a certified life coach, turn wellness coach, as well as a certified parenting coach dedicated to empowering others to rediscover their identity in their current season of life.

[00:00:24] My goal is to help you thrive, both as an individual and as a parent.

[00:00:27] I have Nazar Yasin from Soul with me today, and I am excited for what we're gonna be talking about. So let me give you a breakdown of what we're gonna be talking about. He is gonna talk about how recent research shows that purpose or spiritual activity boosts social, emotional, physical, and mental health by up to four times and reduces anxiety, depression, addiction, and suicide by up to 80%.

[00:00:55] I interviewed somebody maybe two months ago. On suicide. [00:01:00] So this is really relevant. And of course I wanted to have him on because he hits several of the dimensions of wellness, which is totally my jam. So I'm very excited for this conversation. But first, can you introduce yourself and a little bit about your background?

[00:01:17] Nazar Yasin's Background and Purpose

[00:01:17] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah, sure. So psyched to be here. Thanks for having me, autumn and really appreciate it. Big fan of what you're doing and just trying to help people get healthier and, experience wellness in so many different ways. It's great purposeful work. So big fan of what you're doing with this podcast and beyond, and it's like to be here a little bit about me.

[00:01:36] I'm profits with a purpose entrepreneur. Purpose has always played a really important part in my life, ever since I was a kid. My family's background is like in civic service I'm half Greek and half Libyan and. My Libyan grandfather founded the country of Libya, as crazy as that sounds.

[00:01:54]

[00:01:54] Autumn Carter: Wow,

[00:01:55] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: on the Greek side of my family, I've had different people in my family serve in [00:02:00] public service roles, even like Prime Minister of Greece and things like that. So just growing up it was always about Hey, like you have your life and that's great but what are you doing for the world, right?

[00:02:09] Like you live, you exist in something bigger than you, and what are you doing for that, for the world around you, for people around you? And so that's always just been a really big question in my life. And I was really solidified when I was a kid. I went through unfortunately like a childhood trauma kind of episode.

[00:02:25] And anytime something like that happens to you, it really makes you question things about the world. Like, why did this happen to me? Is the world a good place? Is it a bad place? Am I a good person? Am I not a good person? Did I deserve this? And for me, that just really crystallized the idea that, you know what, I gotta show up every day and I gotta just try to do good things in the world and try to maximize.

[00:02:48] Whatever positive impact I can have in the world, I gotta earn my place here. That's what I came out of it thinking. And so that's what I've tried to do. I've tried to do that kind of in the technology kind of sphere. I've always [00:03:00] been a little bit of a geek and just a coder engineer kind of person went engineering school and then grad school and stuff like that and really try to point my life in a direction of, okay, let me try to use technology to try to make the world better in some way, shape, or form.

[00:03:18] The latest iteration of that is really sold. And that's I've been through this big journey of running a big internet company and selling it for a billion dollars and then being a VC and investing in other startups and founders and helping them build these big, amazing companies all over the world in India and China and Mexico and other places.

[00:03:37] And it's been a really rewarding journey. And now I'm really focused on Seoul, which the entire intention of Seoul is.

[00:03:45] The Impact of Purposeful Activity

[00:03:45] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: As you mentioned before is there's all this new research that shows that when you do purposeful activity, when you can align your inner life with the outer life things that you're doing right, when you can align your mind and your heart and your soul with the things that you're doing in life, like what you're doing with your podcast, it has massive health benefits for you.

[00:04:05] So it literally reduces anxiety, depression, loneliness, addiction, suicide by 80%. And it really solves a lot of the things that we see wrong in the world today. And when this research came out, now McKinsey and Harvard Medical School and the Mayo Clinic and all sorts of organizations talk about this.

[00:04:27] It's how can I build a tool that enables anyone, anywhere to live a more purposeful life? Because if the science is right, then that makes people healthier, and that's what we need more of in this world. A little bit about me, a little bit about soul. What I'm trying to do.

[00:04:39] Autumn Carter: So it sounds like you're a great blend between my husband and I.

[00:04:42] He is the tech geek engineering, so that's super fun. Oh, that's neat. So as soon you said that, I'm like, oh, my husband. And then I'm the one who I do coaching, one-on-one coaching. I do some group coaching. So really digging into the individualized, how can I help [00:05:00] you? But not everyone can afford that.

[00:05:01] So that was where my podcast came from, is just, I wanna help people, period. How can I do that?

[00:05:08] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: That's such noble work, really just trying to help others

[00:05:11] Autumn Carter: it's very rewarding. I did not expect how much it was going to benefit me personally, just in my own growth journey. That was never the intention, but I'll take it.

[00:05:25] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: That's the funny thing, is like we, we've forgotten this in this world where it's like all about trolling each other on Twitter and stuff like that. It's like when you actually do acts of kindness, compassion for other people, the science shows that you actually make yourself healthier.

[00:05:41] You're helping the other person, but you're also triggering a chemical called oxytocin. Oxytocin is it's like the kumbaya chemical in all of us. It makes you feel like you're flying and wow, I'm like part of something bigger and I'm like a good person. And it's that, feeling, it's not the [00:06:00] dopamine stuff that you get by using like Instagram and TikTok, which is like click, Oh, I'm doing something. I'm kinda like making a little bit of progress. It's like you get the same, the connection people kick Yeah the, oxytocin that sort of that chemical that you trigger by being kind and compassionate to others by helping other people like you do through your podcast.

[00:06:19] Autumn Carter: Yeah.

[00:06:19] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Coaching work that's immensely powerful for your own wellness.

[00:06:23] Autumn Carter: You seem like someone very intentional just by the little bit that I'm getting to know you. So why is your spelling SOL instead of OOUL.

[00:06:34] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah. Yeah so I love the word soul, SOL, because it means so many different things.

[00:06:40] First of all, it's the Latin word for the sun, which is quite literally the thing that enables all of us to be alive, right? So all the energy from the sun gets absorbed, by plants, through photosynthesis. And if you're a vegetarian, you eat the plants. And if you're not vegetarian, then animals eat the plants, and then you eat the animals.[00:07:00]

[00:07:00] Quite literally. The sun is why we're alive, and it's a source of life. And the word soul also is the word for a day on any other planet besides Earth. So we live in this massive universe. We like to think that we're the center of the universe. We're just a part of it. We're a small speck of dust in this massive universe that we live in.

[00:07:18] And so the name of a day on any other planet besides Earth is a soul. Soul is also the key of g. Which is in music. I'm a huge music fan and want to be part-time musician kind of person. And the key of G is like the happy key. Do re meel all that sort of stuff. And it has a lot of interesting meanings.

[00:07:40] And so it's if we're gonna create like an app that's all about helping people live with more purpose and intentionality in helping them live healthier, like this is a great word. It also sounds like soul. The thing that you're trying to like light up and so, why not? Why not use that instead?

[00:07:56] So that's, what we've decided to.

[00:07:58] Autumn Carter: Nice. I'm glad I asked. I knew there [00:08:00] was intention.

[00:08:01] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah.

[00:08:02] Autumn Carter: I knew it wasn't gonna be one of those somebody else had the U, so I just took the U out. I knew there was gonna be a lot more to it than that. That is super fun.

[00:08:10] Personal Wellness Practices

[00:08:10] Autumn Carter: So tell us about some of your own wellness practices that you have so that we can learn and adopt.

[00:08:19] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: It's been an evolution in my life. I have two young teen kids who're trying out a bunch of activities and they're like I tried this sort of hop keto thing and like just really fit with me and I'm trying drums and I'm not sure about that.

[00:08:34] And like, how do I find like my jam in life? And I'm like, don't worry. Just keep trying stuff, right? Because like for me, the thing that I eventually tried, I've enjoyed physical activity and sports for most of my life, but the thing that is like really makes my heart sore and that is like my jam every day is running in nature.

[00:08:54] And I discovered this after college. I played sports like all the way through college. I played rugby in college. I love [00:09:00] rugby, I love American football, I love all sorts of sports. Played, played 'em all in high school and in college. Then after college I joined this company and everybody from the company was on the track team in college and they'd all go running during lunch.

[00:09:12] I'm like if I'm gonna make friends here, I may as well join this group of guys and go on a run with them. And I hated it my first couple times, 'cause they were really good and really fast and I was like dying, like I'd never run more. I'm like two miles in my entire life and they're like going on these five mile runs or whatever.

[00:09:27] But after a couple weeks I'm like, this is pretty cool. I'm like. Running around and we're in nature and I'm looking at a bunch of stuff and I'm hearing my heartbeat and my footsteps and things like that. I'm like this is really cool. And so I stuck with it and it's been like a daily routine for me.

[00:09:43] So I, every morning right around sunrise, I go for a run. And on that run it is my meditation. Like I am hearing my breath, I'm hearing my footsteps. I'm like listening to Birds sing. I'm like checking out the scenery. I'm like, admiring a [00:10:00] tree. So you're tuned in

[00:10:02] Autumn Carter: instead

[00:10:03] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: of tuned out. Totally tuned in and, later on in life.

[00:10:07] And this kinda like really fits into what, the research behind soul is. It turns out that there is no right or wrong way to do what is called purposeful or spiritual activity. Like it can be as simple. As going on a run in nature, if that's what makes you feel connected to something bigger than you, if that's what helps you take a little bit of time for yourself and have that reflective moment, right?

[00:10:35] That's purposeful activity. And really as, a research has shown purposeful activity or spirituality, it's really just exercise for your brain, right? Is the way it works. It's kinda if you wanna get your body more fit. You can do exercise, which could be something as simple as like doing jumping jacks at home or going on a walk or planking, or doing Pilates or anything.[00:11:00]

[00:11:00] Or you can do it in an organized fashion, which is what we call sports, right? Where it's okay, I'm gonna do a form of exercise. That involves collaborating with other people with specific rules and with specific objectives, and that's called sports. And to exercise your brain, it turns out. You do purposeful activity, right?

[00:11:18] It like literally exercises your parietal cortex in your brain. It can come in any form. It could be meditation, it could be prayer. It could be spending time in nature. It could be breathing exercises, it could be journaling, it could be astrology. It could be almost anything that helps you feel more connected to something bigger than you.

[00:11:34] Now, if you want to do it in an organized fashion with specific rules and specific procedures and things like that, we call that religion, and that's cool too. You could be religious and be spiritual. You could be spiritual or purposeful and not religious. It's, it doesn't matter. It's the same thing as like choosing between like freeform exercise and sports.

[00:11:52] You can just do whatever works for you. 'cause the science shows that's what exercises your brain and creates all these mental health benefits that we talked [00:12:00] about a minute ago. When I learned about that, I was like, oh, this is cool. I developed this practice of going for runs in my twenties and I really enjoyed it.

[00:12:08] And now I understand why I feel so much happier after I go for a run. This is why I feel so much more connected to everything around me. This is why no matter what happens the rest of the day after I've gone on that run and been in nature, it's still a great day. I could fail at everything else I did that day and I still go to bed at night and I'm like, I had a great day.

[00:12:27] So that's what it does for you mentally and we're excited to help people discover that through soul.

[00:12:34] Autumn Carter: But it was by accident. That's super fun. Totally,

[00:12:38] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: totally by accident. You gotta be, I feel like you gotta be open to what the universe throws at you, and this morning I'm calling you from Louisville, Kentucky. Some of my good friends first met at the Kentucky Derby 20 years ago, and they're having their anniversary weekend this weekend and invited us and a few other couples to come and join them. [00:13:00]

[00:13:00] Autumn Carter: So I get up and I go

[00:13:00] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: for a run this morning in Louisville, Kentucky.

[00:13:03] I got chased by a dog. I literally got attacked by a dog, and I had to like, run away from a dog and jump over a fence and you never know what life's gonna throw at you. And I'm sure it was a

[00:13:14] Autumn Carter: small dog, right?

[00:13:16] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: You never know what the world's gonna throw at you, and you gotta just roll with it. And I fell into running as like my jam. And that's my daily meditation spiritual activity.

[00:13:28] Autumn Carter: And I have a feeling from talking to you, this isn't your only one. That you have more than one

[00:13:34] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Music is my other one. It's so cathartic for me. Some people write poetry or they journal, or they do things like that. I write songs. I literally just write songs and it just pours out of me.

[00:13:46] And I'm not saying they're good songs,

[00:13:48] Autumn Carter: but they don't have to be. I think that's what we forget. We forget that it has to be perfect or don't do it.

[00:13:54] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: It's for me and yeah, I put them on Spotify so that my friends and family can listen to 'em and hear [00:14:00] what's on my mind and how I'm expressing myself.

[00:14:04] I've got like a grand total of seven monthly listeners on Spotify. I don't care. It's for me, and so, I write it, I try to put it out there and just kinda share it with the world. And if there's one person who hears what I'm singing about or writing about or playing guitar about, and they're like, oh, that's cool.

[00:14:20] I feel that way. Cool. That's awesome. And if not, it's for me and I, help to get all those. Feelings and thoughts out. So that's my other big spiritual activity is really music, just writing and playing music. I love it. It's it's really one of the most fun things in the world for me,

[00:14:38] Autumn Carter: and it doesn't sound like you are stuck with.

[00:14:38] These have to be my things. Connecting back to your two children where it's continue finding what works for you and remembering that we are in D different seasons of life, and if it doesn't work anymore, try out some new ones. You might find something that fits better or whatever.

[00:14:54] Embracing Failure and Finding Joy

[00:14:54] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: And I think honestly, I think it's such an important message for kids is just try stuff and [00:15:00] fail.

[00:15:00] Autumn Carter: Failure is good and adults do. Some adults forget that they do it for their kids, but they forget to do it for themselves.

[00:15:07] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Failure is good and I fail. I fail every day, A million times a day I hear the answer. No, I get stuff wrong. It's okay. Like you can't get hung up on this idea of your life needs to be perfect.

[00:15:19] You need to do everything perfectly. I, mentioned earlier I've always liked sports and I've always admired people like Michael Jordan and these sort of sports legends and when you hear about them, like when you hear them talk about their journey of the Tom Brady's of the world, right?

[00:15:35] Famously undrafted famously like slow and has like a weak arm and can't throw the ball very far. And famously not what you look for in a quarterback, and he becomes like the greatest quarterback ever, right? Michael Jordan famously would talk about I've missed gazillions of shots.

[00:15:51] I've lost the game hundreds of times. Like I fail and I fail But it's not failure. It's like it's learning. [00:16:00] Practice. And so that's what life is. It's just trying stuff, that makes your heart feel like it's open and like connecting with something, trying stuff that makes your soul and your spirit feel like, wow, I enjoy this.

[00:16:14] Trying stuff that like makes your mind feel like, you know what, I'm really harnessing the best of me when I'm doing this activity. And you could fail at it a gazillion times, but if you love it, keep doing it. If you fall out of love with it, find the next thing that you think you might have a chance of loving.

[00:16:30] Because once you find stuff that you really love and connect with, I'm telling you like I could have no money in life and like I'd be happy. Like I go for a run, I play music, God, beautiful wife and beautiful kids, and like I don't care about anything. It's nothing else really matters.

[00:16:50] Is it gonna matter what car I drive or what house I live in? My father recently passed away and I was really stunned. [00:17:00] This is six weeks ago, so this is pretty fresh, and I was really stunned. A lot of people and he did some really interesting things in life. A lot of people spend time at funerals talking about like people's accomplishments and in the case of my dad, literally, everybody was just like, he was a good man.

[00:17:15] He was just a good person. That's what everybody from like childhood friends. So like people later on in life, business associates, family members, everybody was just like, the thing that they remember is he was a good person. And so this other stuff we worry about. Yeah, we need money to pay for food and have a place to, I get it.

[00:17:35] Like we need that, right? It's the energy that we use in the world to exist and we have to exist in this world and do stuff, but it's not the thing that matters. The thing that matters is are you being the best version of yourself for you and the people you care about? Are you being a good person?

[00:17:49] Are you being good to you? Are you being good to other people? For me,

[00:17:52] Autumn Carter: that's what happiness is. That's the definition.

[00:17:54] The Science of Happiness and Spirituality

[00:17:54] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Happiness is. That's exactly it. And if you can find the activities and [00:18:00] the communities that help to reinforce that is what purposeful living is. That is actually what spirituality is, and that is the thing that triggers the oxytocin and that builds your parietal cortex and that reduces anxiety and depression and addiction.

[00:18:15] And suicide by 80%. It's like clinically proven. This is science this is not woowoo kind of stuff. That's what it's all about.

[00:18:24] Learning New Skills and Embracing Hobbies

[00:18:24] Autumn Carter: Love that you're talking about this because like I was thinking the other way that even if you're terrible at it, there's part of that if you're trying something new for the growth of it and then for finding the enjoyment out of it for me.

[00:18:39] I'm learning pickleball. I'm terrible at it. My husband decided to learn too. I'm in the beginner league and he's in the intermediate league. I'm a little annoyed. I'm the one who took more of the classes, come on now, but I played soccer. That was my sport, and he's terrible at soccer. So I just have to picture when he first played soccer [00:19:00] intramurals in college and me first watching him being like, you're really.

[00:19:05] So I just replay that for myself. Yeah. You're ball

[00:19:07] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: between his legs. Yeah, totally. That, makes me feel a

[00:19:10] Autumn Carter: little bit better for myself. But anyway, it's so terrible. A

[00:19:12] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: a hundred percent. A hundred percent. Yeah. A

[00:19:13] Finding Your Path in Life

[00:19:13] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: nd I mean at the end of the day there's this my daughter's 15 and she's I'm not sure what I want to do in life.

[00:19:20] And I'm like, it's okay. You don't need to figure this out now. It's gonna take many years to figure it out. That's just, the world's a confusing place and it's gonna take well, and let's look at

[00:19:30] Autumn Carter: your resume. Is it linear? Is anybody's No.

[00:19:32] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: No, you gotta figure stuff out. And at the end of the day, like music for me, I love music.

[00:19:38] It doesn't mean that's my job, right? Because you gotta figure out something that's okay, am I passionate about it? Am I good at it? Can I make money at it? And in the case of music, I love it more than anything else. Am I good at it? Yeah. Can I make money at it? Absolutely not.

[00:19:55] So it's in the hobby category and that's okay. You know what I mean? And in [00:20:00] the sort of livelihood or the career category, okay. I happen to be pretty good at like doing some tech stuff and like working with entrepreneurs and building new technology products and companies and things like that.

[00:20:11] I'm pretty good at that. So that's my job. If I had my druthers and I would spend if I could choose one thing to spend all my day. Earning money, it would be music. I love it. I like it more than the tech stuff. I'm just not good enough to do that. And that's okay.

[00:20:26] Autumn Carter: Hobby and if you're doing it all the time, you might end up hating it, realizing you're not making money at it.

[00:20:30] So Amazing. Yeah. You're gonna keep it a love.

[00:20:33] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah.

[00:20:33] Autumn Carter: Different box. Totally.

[00:20:35] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: That makes sense.

[00:20:35] Introduction to the Soul App

[00:20:35] Autumn Carter: Tell us more about your app. I wanted this to be personal and if people are interested in the app to still get something out of it. So tell us a little bit more about your app.

[00:20:44] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Feel free to check it out. It's at get Soul App, GT SOL app. You can just search for spiritual or you can search for mental health, or you can search for Soul, SOL on the app store or the Play Store, and you'll find Soul. It's a little [00:21:00] happy little soul guy, little smiley face kind of guy, and that's your soul.

[00:21:04] How the Soul App Works

[00:21:04] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: The way Soul works is your soul, your SOL in the app is like your personal Jiminy Cricket. Your personal Jiminy Cricket helps you to align your inner life. We help you kinda like harness your inner life so that you can crush it in your outer life, right? We help you harness your mind and open your heart and inspire your soul and do these things that help you develop clinically a stronger sense of purpose in your life so you can feel like you're connecting with the right activities and the right communities that makes sense for you.

[00:21:38] And when you do that. Again, you reduce anxiety, depression, loneliness, addiction, all these things that distract you and pull you off the path and create problems for you. You remove all that and you become much more clear-minded. You become much more collaborative. You become much more creative, and you can crush it in your outer life by aligning your inner life.

[00:21:58] And so that's what soul's all about, [00:22:00] is helping anybody, anywhere to live a more purposeful life, a like a better life, basically by aligning their inner world, the way that we do this is when you join Soul, we encourage you every day to do one thing that harnesses your mind. This can be, and again, it depends on you.

[00:22:19] If you're into horoscopes, it's okay. Read your daily horoscope do a personality quiz. Do these meditations that are aligned with what you want to do. Okay. So one thing that harnesses your mind, one thing that opens your heart. So some act of authentic connection or compassion with another human being.

[00:22:38] Check out how compatible you are with your husband. Get relationship tips on gift ideas for him, or shared activities you can do together that mesh your personalities together so you can build a closer relationship. Connect with the community. Offer support to somebody who's going through a hard time.

[00:22:55] If a friend of yours on Soul says that they're having a bad day, you can send them a virtual hug. It's [00:23:00] like sending them a bouquet of flowers to say, Hey, I got your back. I'm here for you. So do one authentic thing that opens your heart. And then thirdly, do one thing that inspires your soul.

[00:23:09] And this can be, again, based on you and what you're into, right? If you're a very Christian person, it can be okay, do your daily Bible reading, which goes according to the liturgical calendar depending on what your denomination of Christianity is. If you're into astrology and things like that, okay?

[00:23:25] Check your daily vScope if you're into nature stuff like me okay, do a nature meditation or go for a walk in nature. Do something like that. So we help you organize your life so that you can do something that harnesses your mind, something that opens your heart, something that inspires your soul on a daily basis.

[00:23:42] 'cause again, scientifically, if you do those three things, you build more purpose into your life. You build more spirituality in your life. You reduce all these bad things by 80% and become a happier, healthier person. So that's what we're trying to do.

[00:23:55] Autumn Carter: And I could hear people already saying, oh, I could do that on my own.

[00:23:59] [00:24:00] Okay let's see you do it on your own without being reminded for 60 days, whatever.

[00:24:06] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Please do it on your own. We want people to not spend time on our app. Really, if you can do this all by yourself. Do it. If you have community and you have these practices that you do do it. The challenge is a lot of people are they don't have the resources or they don't have the know-how to combine a bunch of different things.

[00:24:26] Combining Different Spiritual Practices

[00:24:26] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: For example, like in my life my, my mom's family has been Christian and Greek Orthodox Christian for hundreds of years. My wife's family has been Catholic for hundreds of years and. We're also into some other stuff, like I like some Buddhist meditation stuff. That's cool.

[00:24:44] My wife's into some astrology stuff. She thinks that's cool. And like how do you raise your kids? Like what? What do you like? How do you fit all the pieces together and live like a nice kind of spiritual life together in a way that makes sense? It's hard to figure out how to do that and how do you connect with other people who are into the same things.

[00:24:59] It's hard to [00:25:00] find communities. Groups of people are into that, right? Because if you bring up astrology in the wrong context, people are like, whoa, you're weird if you bring up Catholicism in the wrong context. They're like, no, thank you. And so like, how do you find the people and the activities and put it all in one place so you can organize your life and live a purposeful spiritual life on your terms the way that you want to, right?

[00:25:19] Not the way that like, necessarily like your neighbors want you to, or maybe even your family wants you to, but the way you want to. And that's what soul helps you do. And what I've just described is that's like literally 70% of everybody you know, is kinda like in that zone where they're like,

[00:25:34] Autumn Carter: a mix of everything.

[00:25:35] I do this

[00:25:35] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: but I also like this and I like a little bit of this. And that's kinda the world that we live in. So you we're just can't find

[00:25:39] Autumn Carter: somebody who's exactly like you. And if you do, it's not gonna last for long. 'cause one of you is gonna change your interest or something's gonna change.

[00:25:46] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah and it's all like literally we have people like every day like writing us like, okay, like I thought I was weird 'cause I was into this and this and this. It turns out there's 10,000 other people like me and some of them are in Finland and others are in South Africa [00:26:00] and others are like in Canada and others are in Florida.

[00:26:03] And like I didn't know, 'cause I'm sitting here in like Kentucky or whatever and I didn't know there's other people like me. And so you get

[00:26:09] Autumn Carter: the social connection just in that of not feeling alone anymore.

[00:26:13] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: You're not alone.

[00:26:14] The Importance of Belonging and Connection

[00:26:14] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: And that's such a huge problem in today's world is like think about the problems that we've created for ourselves, like in today's world is in 20 years ago you, and I'd be having this conversation in person over a coffee or something and we get to know each other and hang out and but now we're separated by a screen and it's convenient and it's cool, but but we can hang ups Separat, we don't continue

[00:26:36] Autumn Carter: conversation.

[00:26:37]

[00:26:37] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: There's separation and we constructed our lives in a way where we don't live in the places where we grew up. We don't hang out with the people who we grew up with or our school friends or our childhood friends or our family members we're somewhere else. I'm grateful for that. Are you?

[00:26:54] I did not have good childhood.

[00:26:56] Autumn Carter: I am on the opposite side of the country and I'm very happy.

[00:26:59] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Okay. Yeah. And [00:27:00] sometimes it's a blessing, right? But maybe you miss some childhood friends or maybe you miss some people you went to school with and like they live in other parts of the country or other parts of the world and you work with people and sometimes you don't get a chance to see them in person.

[00:27:13] We have these conversations through screens and so we've built this world for ourselves. Were inherently lonely, right? Like we, oh, I've heard that from

[00:27:20] Autumn Carter: kids. I was driving down the street the other evening, so it was still light out how many kids were walking down the street like this?

[00:27:28] And I was just thinking about the posture problems in 20 years of all these kids, because our head weighs how much? I think it's 12 pounds or something. They're gonna have some huge hunchbacks, big time, and they're not connecting with people. And it's hard to remember that because I'm texting all these people all the time.

[00:27:47] But then when you stop, are you really connected with them? 'cause it's not a real conversation like this kind is a real conversation. But if you guys are watching on YouTube, we can only see from his chest [00:28:00] up. There's so much more because 80% of what communication is body language. So we're only getting part of his body language.

[00:28:09] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah, totally. And what's more is like our daughter who's 15, we all feel this way. We all feel like we're not good enough at certain moments in the day. We feel am I strange? Like how come I'm nervous when I'm around this group of people? Do they like me? And especially as a teenager, you have those feelings a lot.

[00:28:30] I don't know, maybe as a teen you were, you had everything figured out. I remember as a teen, I was like. Am I like the least popular person in school? Does anybody, do I have any friends like my, even my friends, do they go? I there I was

[00:28:43] Autumn Carter: really good. I was right in the middle. So in popularity on purpose, because I could go, when I was sick of one group, I could go to the other and like I had several groups of friends and I'd be an outsider and like those clicks, but I was still accepted somehow.

[00:28:57] I don't know how I pulled it off. If I had the [00:29:00] roadmap, I'd give it to everybody 'cause it was awesome. And. Yeah. None of us had it figured out, but it was so great when, 'cause we've all been teenagers before or we have teenagers even worse. And with the hormones from one day to the next, who's your friend?

[00:29:15] Who's your not, who's not changes.

[00:29:19] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Totally. It's crazy. And so this, feeling of do I belong is a question we all ask ourselves at different points in the day or week or month or year, is you have these questions about maybe you go to some conferences some other podcasters or people in the wellness industry, and you're like, wow, this group of do I belong in this group?

[00:29:38] Like we all have this need to belong to something. And we've created a world with screens and things like that, that make it harder to find other people you belong with, right? And so it's all, we're trying to solve some of that problem by just being like, Hey look, you say you're into these things and you're like.

[00:29:56] These are your kind of core values and principles, and what makes you [00:30:00] happy and what inspires you. There's 10,000 other people just like you, right? And here's your personality compatibility based on what they said their personality is, and what your personality is like. Here's some people you could get along with.

[00:30:10] Here's some people you might belong with. Find your tribe. So it's a friendship

[00:30:14] Autumn Carter: app instead of a dating app.

[00:30:16] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah. Find your soulmates find your SOL mates, right? And so we're trying to, we're trying to help solve part of that too.

[00:30:26] Autumn Carter: That's amazing. Is there anything else that you would like to leave us with or that we haven't discussed that you wanna talk about?

[00:30:38] Final Thoughts and Encouragement

[00:30:38] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Just that I just say that whatever you're going through in life you're not alone if you're going through a divorce or you're having like, relationship problems or if you're trying to get over a trauma or. There are tens, hundreds of thousands of people just like you, who are going through the same thing, with the same perspectives on life [00:31:00] and want the same things in life.

[00:31:01] And it's just about trying to find them, right? Like just about trying to what are the tools you can use to find your peeps and people who you can connect with and share with. So anybody out there who's going through a really hard time, I just say, you're not alone. And there's an old saying, it goes in the end it's okay.

[00:31:20] If it's not okay, it means it's not the end. So just keep going like it will be okay. You will find people and resources and activities that will make things okay for you, I promise. So just keep going. So I would just offer that as hopefully words of Solace to whoever is going through a really hard time right now.

[00:31:41] Autumn Carter: And I love that when I've thought about that for myself is realizing that people. Might be at the beginning of that journey or at the end, like they're on the spectrum of where they're at on the journey, and it's so valuable to have all those different perspectives within that journey. Totally. [00:32:00] Yeah.

[00:32:00] I love that. Okay tell us again where to find the app so that we can close out with this thought.

[00:32:11] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah, totally. So check us. Thank you so much. Check us out on you could go to get Soul app, it's G-E-T-S-O-L app or try to find us on the app store, the Google Play Store. Just search for SOL or spiritual or mental health.

[00:32:27] And we're typically one of the top 1, 2, 3 results or even

[00:32:30] Autumn Carter: better in the description. And please share this with other people because we know that loneliness is an epidemic. Really, it's a pandemic. It's all around the world. It is. Loneliness is so prevalent, and depression and suicide and anxiety and different mental health issues are on the rise because we feel lonely, we feel disconnected in so many ways from ourselves, from other people, from our higher power.

[00:32:59] [00:33:00] From nature.

[00:33:01] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Yeah. Yeah. That's true. Thank you. That's true. No and thank you for having me. And thank you for doing what you do. I think it's so amazing what you're doing, sharing knowledge like this and perspectives like this with people trying to help them live a happier, healthier life.

[00:33:15] Big fan of what you're doing

[00:33:17] Autumn Carter: and my benefit that I never expected is I'm learning so much from other people and the connections that I'm making just from the people that I'm talking to is so fun. But I promise I started this for you listeners, not for my own benefit, but I am not minding the bonus at all.

[00:33:35] Nazar Yasin- Get Sol: Lovely. Thanks for having me.
