The Rural Biker Podcast

What Keeps A Rider Moving When The Road Stalls

Griz Season 2 Episode 1

The room’s shaking from the wind, the software feels brand new, and the bike still wears a fresh tire—perfect conditions to admit the truth about a year-long gap and what it takes to get rolling again. We open up about losing momentum, skipping rides we love, and staring down a to-do list when the season turns cold and quiet. It’s raw, practical, and grounded in the reality of rural roads where gravel appears overnight and motivation takes real work.

We dig into the simple gear that stretches your riding season—heated layers that turn a bone-chilling day into manageable miles, tire and oil checks that matter more when temps drop, and air filters that clog fast in dusty country air. Safety gets a spotlight: reading corners for hidden leaves, braking while upright, and scanning for inattentive drivers on straight, sleepy highways. If you ride through winter or plan a spring comeback, these habits keep the bike healthy and your head clear.

Life off the bike matters too. A sudden layoff can knock the wind out of anyone, and we talk about rebuilding with small steps: quick recordings, short loops, and one fix at a time. We also touch on club violence in the headlines and why small-town riders can choose a different path—focusing on craft, charity miles, and everyday awareness. The promise is simple but firm: more presence, more practical stories, and a steady return to the ride and the mic.

If this hits home, follow the show, share it with a rider who needs a nudge, and drop a comment with your best cold-weather tip or motivation hack. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us what you want to hear next—what gets you moving when the road feels stalled?

Welcome to the Rule Fiker Podcast. I'm your host, coming to you live from Owl Out Studios, where we bring you. All right, welcome to another episode of the Rule Back a podcast. I know it's been a while, so uh I don't really have any excuses other than uh whatever I'm gonna tell you coming up right now. Alright, well, I'm your host Grizz. Welcome to another episode of RBP. It's almost kind of like the first episode, it's been so long. I was screwing around and looking at my Buzz Sprout account, and I think the last one I put up was December of 2024. So yeah, it's been like a whole year. Unfortunately, I don't have gobs of content I've been sitting on because Pickleback, my buddy, he uh he went down this spring and it it really put a sour the whole yeah, whatever, man. I didn't do shit. I didn't do shit. I hardly rode my bike this year. Um I guess the good thing is is I put one tire on it in the spring, and uh fucking tire's still brand new, so I'm okay with that. But uh I gotta get out there and get riding again. It's fucking killing me. Um yeah, I uh fired up this fucking podcast today to try to do something, and that little intro that you just heard me uh that space intro or whatever, that shit took me like two and a half hours to figure out because I couldn't even remember how to work my software and where my files were hidden, and uh yeah. It's been pretty shitty. So I am not giving up on the podcast. Um it is it is kind of difficult for me to get content, but uh I just need to get off my fucking ass and go get some content. It is December 6th today. Tomorrow is Pearl Harbor Day, so y'all don't forget, you know. That was some horrendous shit. Over 2,400 Americans were killed. So it's coming up tomorrow. I'd like to say that there really hasn't been much going on in the area as far as biking events or anything like that. But I can't really say that because I'm not real sure because I've been just out of the loop, completely out of the loop. There is a toy run happening today, the the Echo toy run. I've been on that several times. Um yeah, I don't know what my problem is, man. Lack of mat lack of lack of mathematics, lack of motivation. I just I don't know, man. I just don't have it. I'm trying to get back into it. I need something. But uh boots is out on the ride. Um it's yeah, the wind's blowing about 5,000 miles an hour outside. I'm surprised you can't hear the studio rocking around. I keep hearing the tarps flapping on the roof, and it's like, holy crap. But it is crystal clear, it's really nice out. But I think it's like 55, but holy crap, Windy. Windy, be safe, be safe, man. Holy shit. That's always been a really good ride. Um, I mean, 55 degrees is unheard of. I've been on that ride when it was 18 degrees. I think that was the first time I ever went on it. And uh there was a bunch of us, and we were all all uh packed up. And in fact, I think I'm pretty I'm pretty sure I talked about it in one of my first few episodes. It was it was cold. It was cold, but I got my heated gear. Everybody laughs at me about my heated gear until they're all cold too. So for me, heated gear is a must out here in the rule. Uh if you're going to well, actually, it doesn't even have to really be in the rule. If you want to ride your bike like, you know, when it's not 65 out, 70. Uh I mean, for me, I I just need heated gear then. It's just the way it's gonna have to be. I don't really have any plans to do anything to my bike this winter, uh, ruthless. We're gonna bring her her sporty jersey back in the house and tear the top end down again and see if we can't get those oil leaks fixed. Um that's about the only the only winter projects. Freya is in real good shape. Like I said, brand new tires. I haven't even really rode on them. Um yeah. I think I'll have to do an oil change here pretty quick, and my air filter's pretty nasty. But uh once again in the rural area, there's lots of dust. Um just one of those things you always gotta you always gotta keep up on is keeping your air filter clean. And with fall becomes gravel. Like, ask ruthless about that. There's always gravel on the roads. Uh Christ, from now until April, it's gonna be nasty. So uh, you know, slow down, watch out for leaves in the corner. In fact, it's getting pretty late in the year. We shouldn't have to really worry about leaves too much, but uh yeah, they can be a little greasy at times. Yeah, well, that's another thing about being a rule biker, is uh sometimes there's just not a whole lot to do. There's not much going on. Uh, you know, like I said, well, today it's like 55 and sunny, but um you know, most of the time that's not the case out here. And it's just it's really hard to stay motivated and stay engaged because there's just not much going on. Everybody is chilling. I mean, you know, not today. Everybody's gonna be out riding on that ride today, uh, which I am not, which is my own damn fault. I'd rather clean up around the house and get some of this podcast stuff done. Uh which sucks because I could have made a whole a whole uh podcast about going on the ride and freezing my ass off in the wind blowing 5,000 miles an hour. But I didn't. So yeah. I'm I'm just trying to find ways to fill up, you know, the podcast. Because you can't always have people over and well, yeah, I guess I probably could. I just need to work on it a little harder. Um so this is my promise, you know. I'm I'm still here, I'm still doing this. I don't have any intentions of stopping, but uh, you know, sometimes we might have to talk about some stupid shit. Just just uh just to fill time because there's just not much going on. And it's only gonna get worse now until what the hell is that driving by out there? Until um you know, springtime. Uh yeah, hopefully I'll be in a little bit better mood. Um yeah, we found out July that uh the job I was working at, the sawmill, uh they closed down, so that kind of took some more wind out of my sails. And you know, I've just been really unmotivated and maybe even like a little depressed because I I just I don't know, man. I'm just chilling around the house doing projects, kind of feeling like a bum a little bit, but you know, ruthless is working, and uh, you know, I'm getting my unemployment and I'm applying for jobs and I'm doing my thing. Uh I do have a little bit of a plan, you know, moving forward, but uh yeah I have I have plenty of time to work on podcast stuff because I'm kind of unemployed at the moment. Um which sucks. It would have been nice well, would uh it's never nice, but it would have been better to be unemployed like uh in June. But now we worked all the way through till September, which I'm glad, but you know, then by the time I didn't have to get up and go to work every morning, it was starting to get a little crappier, and I had a list a mile long of honeydews around the house, and I'm still not done with them because yeah, I just lost motivation. I'm I'm really unmotivated lately. But I'm feeling better the last the last week or so. So that's why I'm out here doing this, trying to get the ball rolling. I wasn't quite ready to go out and spend all day on the bike in the wind. Not really my idea of a good time. I mean, I understand it's a great cause, and those kids really love them toys. But um Yeah. That's on me. That's my bad. So I'm gonna try to stay a little bit more busy on this end. Like I said, a year is I never intended to go a year without putting out an episode. But it happened. Um so yeah, it happened. But we're still here. So I guess that's a good thing, right? We're still here, still moving forward. Oh, let's see. What's really been going on? Oh, well, I don't know if you guys have seen, but there was um some trouble. I think I don't even know where the fuck it was, like Arizona, maybe, or but uh I guess two bikers were at a stop sign, and I mean these are big clubs. Well, one of them was Vago and one of them was a rock rock machine. And allegedly, like these none of these is none of this is facts. I'm just repeating what I've heard. Um Rock Machine and Vago were at a light. The Vago shot the rock machine right off his bike, and then when he got off his bike, some car hit him, and I saw that footage, and that car was hauling some balls. So I don't know if maybe it was a follow car. That's kind of the impression I got was uh, you know, a little bit of retaliation. But I don't know, but it's just crazy, like what the f I I don't know. I mean, I understand, you know, these clubs they've they've got a lot of history, and they've got brothers that are locked up, you know, doing time dead because of these other clubs, you know, because things used to be a lot different. But uh yeah. I just don't understand they keep yeah, I don't know. It's not not my fight, right? Not my fight, and I I don't have to understand it. But man. Yeah, it could do a lot, do a lot more uh you could reach a lot farther, everybody, you know, like working. I don't understand what we're doing anymore. It's just crazy. But we don't have to worry about that too much out here. It's pretty quiet. We don't, you know, there's nothing out here, so we don't have like big big diamond clubs. I mean, you know, we've got we've got a couple, we're not too far away from you know, big cities. Um, we see them on the freeway once in a while, but not really. There's there's some clubs in the area, but yeah, we don't have to worry too much about people shooting each other off their bikes or getting ran. Well, yeah, you gotta be worried about getting ran over because people out here are idiots. So, well, I'm pretty sure that that's you know, everywhere. That's that problem. Everybody's got that problem. Watching out for the cages. It's not so much that I'm worrying about what I'm doing, I'm worrying about what everybody around me is doing. Alright, well, I'm gonna try not to get like too bogged down and just ramble on about, you know, I mean, I don't know how many times I've said I don't have much to talk about in this already, but a few. Um, so I'm gonna work harder on trying to get, you know, a little bit more entertainment for you guys and keep this thing going. Because I'm sure just like you, or just like me, you guys are getting bored too. So, um, yeah, hang in there. We're gonna make it, we're gonna make it, man. So uh stay stand by, stay tuned. And uh thanks for hanging out and listening. And fuck, I guess that's about it. So remember, keep the shiny side up, and I'll see you in the turn.

SPEAKER_02:

Somebody told me you're the guy I need to talk to. Maybe. Blue out here from California. Heard there was a big picnic, wanna check it out. You're the man in charge. Who's funny? Hopefully, maybe to a little food, a little drink, camp out for a night or two.

SPEAKER_03:

Uh help yourself. I'm Johnny. We're the man.
