The Direct Seller's Podcast
What Would You Do If Your Company Closed Tomorrow?
If you’re a direct seller, you’ve probably heard the whispers (or maybe the full-on sirens) about companies closing, switching models, or restructuring overnight. Epicure. Tupperware. Seint. Plunder. In this episode, we’re getting real about the importance of having a backup plan—and how to start one without adding more hustle to your plate.
You’ll learn:
✅ Why relying solely on your direct sales company is a risky move
✅ The warning signs we’ve seen from major company shutdowns and shifts
✅ Three simple steps to create a backup plan (without starting a whole new business)

Welcome to the Direct Sellers Podcast, the podcast for direct sellers who are ready to get uncomfortable, build their business and grow a team while changing the face of the direct sales industry. I'm your host, rachel Perry. Join me as we get real and talk about all the things you need to kick some serious direct sales booty From overcoming limiting beliefs to sharing the exact strategies you need to attract the right people who become customers and beg to join your team. I've got you covered, girl. I'm going to be your new BFF when it comes to balancing life and kids while building your direct sales business with poise, peace of mind and, of course, a good set of fake eyelashes. Let's get started. Hello, my beautiful friends, welcome back to another episode of the Direct Sellers Podcast. Y'all, this has been a week. It's been a week.
Speaker 1:If you I'm assuming because you're listening you're in direct sales, but maybe you're not Like, maybe you used to be and you're not anymore. But I have to ask you if you are in direct sales, if you are in network marketing, what is your backup plan? Because if you think your company, I don't want to be offensive, but if you think the company is looking out for your future, I want you to think again and I'm not saying that they don't care about you, because that's not it at all, but ultimately your company's bottom line is their bottom line, not your bottom line, right? You know, I remember when I first started in direct sales and I remember that was one of the selling points. One of the selling points to starting my own direct sales business is that I was under the umbrella of a bigger company, like I had my own business. It was my own business but I was representing a company and it's a great model. It's a great way to get out there and start and grow something of your own.
Speaker 1:But I think we need to be really aware of the situation that we are in now, with companies closing left and right. Just last weekend, epicure shut down operations with no warning with, like, the consultants. The leaders had no idea and now they're left devastated. In fact, I had one of my previous students who was quite a big leader in Epicure and she said I was loyal to Epicure. I believed that they were loyal to us. And it's not that they're not, it's just sometimes companies get into trouble and they don't have the money. It just becomes very hard. It's a very hard economy, especially after COVID, to build really successful network marketing companies and guys.
Speaker 1:This episode is not about being fearful, no way. It's about being smart and proactive with your business, because I want you to be prepared on the off chance something like this were to happen. Now I'm going to be extremely real with you. I think the truth is these network marketing companies, they have to put their bottom line first, not you. Back in the early 2000s, when it was like I want to, people would say I want to leave my nine to five, I want this is my retirement and things like that. It was doable, it was. I could see a lot of people did it. Nowadays, I think it's a little bit riskier. To be totally honest, I think it's a mistake to rely on your company and your direct sales business for your security because it's not within your control.
Speaker 1:Just in the last year, the big companies that have switched either affiliate models they've closed, they've gone bankrupt or they have sort of what is the word I'm looking for? Why can't I find combine? But that's not the word I'm looking for. But you know, like Plunder, they did that. They went out of business and sort of built a connection. Why can't I think of the right word. Oh my gosh, with J Bloom.
Speaker 1:You have Saint that without warning switched to. I mean, they did give their people three months warning before it happened, but they suddenly get the email that hi, guess what? You're no longer going to have a team anymore, we're switching to just an affiliate model. You have body or beach body that totally is no longer, as far as I believe, the team's piece of it. You have Epicure that just last week closed their doors. Who am I forgetting? Tupperware declared bankruptcy. Now they are saying that they are going to take care of their consultants, but it's still unknown. Right, it's still unknown. It's scary, guys. It's scary if you are relying on your company for your security, but it doesn't need to be scary, because we're going to talk about today how to protect yourself.
Speaker 1:So I want to know, I want you to think about this Are you running a business or are you just repping for someone else's brand Like? Are you your own brand Like? Are you yourself? You have your own business or are you just sharing someone else's products? See, here's the key difference. Your business is something that you can rely on. Your business is something that is you. It's you, it's not just your company. Now, let's be real about this. There are. If you were to look around in other companies and look at the top earners in there, like the top recruiters, things like that chances are they have already secured their income. They are not relying 100% on their company. They may have started another business, they may be affiliating for other companies, they may be. There are other ways that they are bringing in income because they know that relying 100% on their company for their livelihood is a risky move.
Speaker 1:Right, you need to have a backup plan, and the backup plan, you guys, doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't have to require you to start a whole new business. It doesn't at all. Okay, I'm going to give you three very simple steps that you can follow right now to start the process of creating your backup plan. I trained on this last week in a free masterclass called Creating your Backup Plan for Direct Sellers, and I have just opened a program called your Backup Plan. It's actually in pre-sale right now. So, if you're interested, dm me the word backup plan, the terms backup plan, and I will give you the link to that information, because it is going to end up being a high ticket product, but right now. It is not because we're in pre-sale, and so it's definitely something you want to check out. If you are like, yeah, I think I do need a backup plan, here are the three steps.
Speaker 1:Okay, the first is start small. Listen, sister, you do not need to reinvent the wheel. You don't need to reinvent the wheel. Chances are you are creating. You have something right now that you could create of your very own. But here's the thing Whatever you do, you do need to own something that is yours, and we go more into what that looks like inside your backup plan. Number two. Step two, is to put it out there. Once you have figured out what this small thing is that you're gonna create, then got to put it out there. We got to get, we got to do it scared, we got to get uncomfortable and put the thing that we have created out there. And then the third step is creating a brand around it, like create your brand. This then becomes part of your brand. This is how you are going to grow, because you're not just the jewelry lady, you're not just the kitchen lady, you are not just the skincare lady. You are you and you have things to offer in addition to the products that you sell. In addition to inviting people to join your team, you now have something small that you can start building.
Speaker 1:I started small when Amanda and I started the tag team y'all. We sold a product for $19.99. $19.99. And we got to six figures in a year just from selling that one little product. It can be done. It doesn't have to be huge. Okay, I think we sometimes think, oh, I need to build up a backup plan, I need to start a new business, I need to start something on my own. But this is how you do it. It doesn't have to be big, it doesn't have to create more hustle in your life.
Speaker 1:And then we talk about your brand. Like your brand, you've got to build a magnetic brand where people are drawn to you, so that you can then sell your small product and you can grow and build these connections and relationships and grow your brand. Here's the thing. I think it's easy for us when there are things that are uncertain or unknown. And listen, if your company is telling you everything is fine, there's a chance. Everything is fine, there's also a chance everything is not fine. Right, like you just don't know. They want you to not stress, they don't want people. They're having to protect their company too. But here's the truth, guys. Hope is not a strategy. Burying your head in the sand is not a strategy.
Speaker 1:If you don't set up a backup plan now, you could be scrambling later. So many women that I spoke to in this past week are devastated. They had no idea. They thought that there was an incentive trip that was getting ready to happen or that they were working towards, or maybe they just announced it. I can't remember the specifics on that, so please forgive me, but they had no idea. They thought they were safe. They thought it was going to be okay.
Speaker 1:You need a backup plan so that you can start securing your income before you actually need it, because, on the off chance that something were to happen, before you actually need it, because on the off chance that something were to happen, you would have your small backup plan to pick up where you leave off. Listen, if you are curious about more about this backup plan, I have the masterclass. You can sign up for the replay. I'm gonna link it in the notes here so you can just click it, sign up for it and you'll get the replay right away. So definitely check it out so that you can walk away with a real plan that you can start now. And if you're interested in the new program, definitely let me know, dm me on Instagram and we can chat about it.
Speaker 1:Listen, I don't want you to feel scared. I don't want, because guess what? Here's what is within your power. What's not within your power is the future of your company. What is within your power is creating something, a backup plan, so that you are not left in the lurch if the worst thing happens.
Speaker 1:So, listen, this is a quick episode this week, short and sweet, but I just really wanted to get this message out to you. I appreciate you.
