Post-Conference Reality: Turning Inspiration into Direct Sales Action
Just came back from your company's national conference? Whether you're riding high on motivation or feeling completely "meh" about your business, this episode is your reality check and action plan rolled into one.
Host Rachel Perry gets brutally honest about both sides of the post-conference experience—and shares exactly what to do whether you're ready to conquer the world or secretly wondering if it's time for something different. No sugar-coating, just real talk about channeling that energy (or lack thereof) into actual results.
Key Takeaways:
- Strike while the iron's hot: If you came back pumped, you have exactly 3 days to harness that energy before it fades—pick 1-2 strategies max and create a system around them immediately
- Avoid the shiny object trap: That notebook full of ideas? Park most of it for later. Overwhelming yourself (and your team) kills momentum faster than anything else
- Permission to want more: Feeling unenthused doesn't mean you lack skills or commitment—it might mean you've outgrown your current environment and are ready for the next level
- Build your brand, not just your business: Whether you're high or low on motivation, start building something that's completely yours—your company could disappear tomorrow, but your personal brand travels with you
- The comparison trap is real: If seeing the same top earners get recognized over and over makes you feel frustrated rather than inspired, that's a sign you're ready for a different path
- F the mood, follow the plan: Emotions are temporary, but systems and accountability partners will carry you through when the conference high wears off

Welcome to the Direct Sellers Podcast, the podcast for direct sellers who are ready to get uncomfortable, build their business and grow a team while changing the face of the direct sales industry. I'm your host, rachel Perry. Join me as we get real and talk about all the things you need to kick some serious direct sales booty From overcoming limiting beliefs to sharing the exact strategies you need to attract the right people who become customers and beg to join your team. I've got you covered, girl. I'm going to be your new BFF when it comes to balancing life and kids while building your direct sales business with poise, peace of mind and, of course, a good set of fake eyelashes. Let's get started. Hello, my friends, welcome back to another episode of the Direct Sellers Podcast. I'm your host, rachel Perry, and I'm very excited about what we are going to be talking about today.
Speaker 1:Tis the season, okay, tis the season, and no, I'm not talking holidays, although y'all, I'm getting a little bit excited. I got a whiff of my fall candle the other day and I was like, oh my gosh, I'm ready, I'm ready, but I'm trying to enjoy the summer. I'm trying to enjoy, you know, the time that I have before the kids go back to school and John Mark heads off to college. What is happening? But it's all good. So today I want to talk about conference, kind of like a post-conference reality check, if you will, because a lot of you are heading to conference or to your national convention. Some of you are heading back, you've already done it, so I kind of want to talk to you about it. All right. So maybe you came back from your national conference like pumped up, you are ready to conquer the world of direct sales, you are ready to take your business to that next level.
Speaker 1:This episode is for you, my friend. But maybe you came back from a conference less enthused. You're like, eh, maybe the products weren't as great. Maybe you've just been feeling like eh about your business. This episode is for you as well. I want to talk to both sides, okay, because both are completely valid and both need a game plan. Also, I can relate to both. I can relate to both, so I'm going to share my story, my experience, with you as well throughout this episode.
Speaker 1:Let's talk to you first. If you are the one who came back super excited. I mean, conference is awesome for that right. It's awesome to get pumped up, to get motivated, just to feel so connected, right, because here's the thing it is awesome it is when you are in that stage of life, stage of your business, where, girl, no one can tell you nothing about your, your negative, about your business, because, sister, you are on fire and you are so pumped, and that is awesome. And I'm going to tell you, let's harness this energy before it fades, because it will. That's just the nature of life. Like it just will.
Speaker 1:You come back from something and you're pumped and then it takes a little bit of time to sort of settle in and then you're like, oh, where's that excitement gotten? Like we can all relate to that, right, it's like Christmas day when we were little and we've got presents. And then we're like, yeah, I'm so excited. And then two weeks later you're you probably stopped playing with the toy, right, like it's the same thing with conference, playing with the toy right, like it's the same thing with conference. So I really want to encourage you to harness the energy before it fades. So if you've come back recently or you haven't gone yet, I'm going to tell you take action within three days of coming back, because you don't want that momentum to die. But if you, it's been more than three days, like, go implement it right now. Go implement right now. Okay, what is that thing that you are most excited about? What is the thing that you were most pumped about? Okay, because here's the thing, Excitement is important. Excitement, and like being pumped up, is important, but oftentimes that excitement never converts into results because people don't take action. So let's not not take action? Okay, let's actually take action. So I don't want you to.
Speaker 1:I'm not saying work harder, y'all. You know, if you've listened to me for long enough, that I I am anti-hustle, I am anti-working harder because, well, no, that's not true, I'm not anti-working harder, but I am anti-hustle. Okay, I think we can work smarter. I don't think you need to be adding tons of hours working. I really, really don't. You don't get paid enough for that, so let's just work differently. So really don't, you don't get paid enough for that, so let's just work differently.
Speaker 1:So what I want you to do is I want you to pick out and maybe you need to go back through your notes, maybe you've already done this. This is something that I've learned to do on my flight home if I'm flying, because it's so fresh but I want you to pick one to two new strategies or new techniques, or new methods or new ideas that you want to implement, not everything that you've learned. Okay, you've got a full notebook filled with ideas. Let's pick one to two that are the most exciting, that you feel the most ready to try, and then what I want you to do is start implementing them, but create a system around it as you do it. For example, if you're one of the new things that you're excited to try is around recruiting, maybe it's a new strategy. Maybe it's that you're going to hold monthly events, or maybe it's that you're going to follow up with people who are on your maybe list.
Speaker 1:Whatever the idea is, I want you to think about how are you going to do this and how can you repeat it? Because here's the thing and this is coming from a non-systems person but when you create a system and let's take the word system out, because I feel like that can be heavy for people like me, who are not systems oriented we can shut down with that. But if you love the word systems, like you love it, it turns you on. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding, but like you love the words that you love systems and keep the word. But if you don't love systems, let's. Let's create a different word for it, like, maybe you're going to create a strategy or you're going to create a way of doing the things so that you can keep doing it over and over again so you don't forget, okay? And then what I want you to do is I want you to come up with some kind of accountability that you can implement for yourself. Maybe it's that you like bonded with someone at conference and you guys are now running buddies. Or maybe it's that you have someone in your sideline that you kind of want to join arms with. Or maybe it's that you have someone in your sideline that you kind of want to join arms with, or maybe it's a good friend of yours that you guys are doing this together. The accountability piece will make such a difference. Now I'm going to encourage you as well to avoid some common traps that many of us fall into.
Speaker 1:After we come back so pumped, okay. After we come back so pumped, okay. The first is the shiny object syndrome. Here's the thing we want to do everything that we've learned. We're like super pumped up, right. When we come back, we're like I'm gonna change my whole business and my whole life. But the thing is we can't do that. The reality is we can't do that all at once. So what is in your parking lot, what is in your do now, what is in your do later? And the parking lot is like I'm gonna get to that when I've done the do now type thing, right, like we're gonna bump it up. So let's figure out.
Speaker 1:And it kind of goes back to what I was saying now, like pick one to two things. Wait, did I just said that? Right, what I just said? My gosh, I want you to just pick one to two things. The second thing I want you to not do I want you to hold back. You're so excited and you want to tell your team all about it, especially the team members that didn't come. Let's not overwhelm them with all the ideas. Because you're excited. We don't need to overwhelm them because they're not quite excited yet, all right. So let's focus on a couple of things that you can bring back to them Because, listen, if you're training your team, you can share all these different ideas for them to implement next month, the next month, the next month. Right, this is giving you content, honestly, for days.
Speaker 1:Now I also want you to remember what worked before conference. We have a tendency to come back from conference pumped up and wanting to try all the things that we forget what was working before. And listen, friend, there were things that were working before and let's make sure that when that high wears off as it will, you remember that, that you're okay with that. Here's and I've shared this before. I think Leila Hormozy said this. She said F the mood, follow the plan, and that's a lesson that I try to tell myself every day, because I'm such an emotional person, so I'm driven by my emotions many times, which is the problem when you're not feeling it, and there are always going to be days when you don't feel it. So I want you to just keep that in mind and remember what is the plan, what is the plan and just follow the plan even if you don't feel like it. So here are some action steps for you.
Speaker 1:My pumped up friend, I want you to write down the top three things that excited you most at conference. Then I want you to choose one of those things to implement this week, this week schedule specific times to work on it. Maybe it's going to be tomorrow at 11 am. Do it. And then I want you to tell someone, your accountability partner remember how I talked about that just a second ago? I want you to tell them and ask them to check in with you to see if you've done it. Now see, this is what I do for my students. I am their accountability partner, I am the ones that, or I am the one that, keeps them accountable. So, girls, if you're listening, make sure that you tell me what you're doing so I can hold you accountable. Okay, and not in a mean way and not in an annoying way, but seriously in a hey, girl, how's it going? Did you do the thing you said you were going to do? Okay, ladies, you have Voxer access to me, so I want you to Vox me.
Speaker 1:Let's talk to the person who maybe came back from conference a little bit less excited, maybe unenthused. There are so many reasons that this can happen, the first being the comparison trap. I, towards the end of my time in my company, I really did start not loving conference as much, and the reason for that was because I had one foot out the door. I was building the tag team right. I was building another very, very profitable, impactful business, and that was where my excitement was I didn't have it anymore in my direct sales business, like I had lost my excitement for it. I kind of reached the end of my journey with it, right. So I didn't realize that yet, but I did fall into this comparison trap oftentimes. Another thing that kind of got me down was seeing the same people succeed over and over again. Okay, hear me out. Like I am all for cheering people on and I love seeing women win. I love it and don't judge me for this.
Speaker 1:But I would find it frustrating sometimes that I would be working so hard in my direct sales business and then the team leaders, the topper people the topper people, that's a new thing would benefit. Oh my gosh, that sounds terrible. I know that that's the nature of network marketing, but I found it annoying sometimes that they would keep getting recognized. I wouldn't and I was working my arse off. Do you know what I'm saying? Okay, I'm just being real. I feel like I can be real with you and you're not going to judge me. Like that's what this podcast is for. It's where you get the real. The real Rachel. You get the unfiltered Rachel, okay, and maybe sometimes I should be filtered, but whatever.
Speaker 1:Okay, you can hate me if you want to, but I think that was a sign that I had grown out of my business. I had grown out of being a network marketer. I outgrown that rah, rah like sisterhood culture. I was ready for more. I'm not saying that, if you love that right now, that it's not enough. I'm not saying that and I'm not saying it's not more. But for me, I had grown out of it. It was time for me to move on. So here's what I want to tell you If you're feeling anything like that, if you just came back unenthused, I want you to understand that it's not about the fact that you're not committed.
Speaker 1:It doesn't mean that you lack skills. It might mean that you're ready for the next level, right? Sometimes we outgrow our environments, not our businesses, and the difference here is there's a difference between being temporarily burned out Like okay, yeah, because when you're burnt out and then you go to conference, you come back pumped up. But if you're genuinely misaligned and it's just not hitting the same way, it might mean that it's time for you to do something more. And you know, if you've been listening to my podcast, you know that I'm a huge advocate of network marketers starting something of their own, and it can be as simple as starting and building and creating a digital product, like it doesn't have to be hard. But the thing is, is you have so many skills, sister? And if you don't think you have skills, go back in a couple of my episodes, okay, because I've told you, I've shown you what they are.
Speaker 1:So some things I want you to ask yourself if you came back sort of like, eh, what specifically felt different this year? What was it? Are you bored with the strategies or are you bored with the outcomes, or are you just bored? Do you want different results or do you want a different path, or do you want both? And what would have to change for you to feel excited again?
Speaker 1:I remember asking myself that question like how can I get excited again? And even when I left our rallies or our conferences, I always was excited because it was fun. But then, after I left, I'd be like wait, like do I really want to do this? Like do I really want to keep lugging my jewelry to people's houses to sell? Like, oh, I'm so tired of that, right? So what and when?
Speaker 1:I would ask myself what would need to change for me to feel excited. It would be that I wouldn't do it ever again. Okay, that's harsh, but seriously, I was like if I didn't ever have to do this again, I would be happy. I think the biggest thing for me was when I was like, listen, if I can make money doing the tag team and I don't have to do jewelry anymore, I don't have to do my direct sales business anymore, that would be amazing. And that was when I realized, okay, it's time for me to move on.
Speaker 1:So for you, here you've got some options. I'm not saying you have to move on. And keep in mind, guys, my big belief and what I teach you is how to build something of your own alongside your network marketing business. You're not giving up your network marketing business, you're just adding something, and it doesn't have to be big and a lot. I have a feeling for many of you, this is where you're going to be able to tap into your passion, and the passion helps. It's exciting. So here are your options. If this is you, first, I want you to recommit. Okay. If this feels right, all right. Recommit, but with changes like same business but different approach. What is going to light you up or expand your vision? Maybe it's time to add some income streams of your own. That can be as simple as being an affiliate for something. It can be as simple as creating a digital product.
Speaker 1:The next thing is I want you to pivot gradually. So, if you choose to start building something alongside your network marketing business, it doesn't have to be fast. I like to help my students take action fast, because I want you to start making money fast, but you don't have to do it that way. You don't have to do it that way. So listen, here's the thing Both of you like if you came up back pumped up, or if you came back unenthused. I just want you to understand like they're all normal. Those emotions are normal, it just is. Companies want you to be pumped up. They are. That is what the conferences are designed to do, because when you're pumped up, you're gonna take more action. So here's what I want you to do. I want you to think about what is it that I want? What am I feeling If you came back pumped up?
Speaker 1:Channel that energy into building your brand, not just your direct sales business. Use the motivation to push, propel yourself forward. But if you came back unenthused, I want you to give yourself permission to want something different. Sometimes it just comes down to just giving ourselves permission, like, you know what. It's okay. It's okay to whatever.
Speaker 1:I remember I held onto my direct sales business for a long time as we built the tech team. Like I was doing both for a while, and when I gave myself permission to leave my direct sales business, it was pretty powerful. But, friend, it doesn't have to happen right away. Give yourself permission to want something different. That doesn't mean you're leaving your direct sales business. I am not saying that at all, but I think sometimes we don't realize that we're just waiting for permission. And if you need permission from someone else, it's me, hi, you have permission to want something different.
Speaker 1:So listen, whether you're riding high or you're feeling low after your conference, the answer isn't to work harder into the same system, it's to start building something that's completely yours. So, if you came back pumped up, start implementing the strategies. But, my friend, make sure you're building your brand, because that's you, that goes with you wherever you go. If your company closed down today, you would still have your brand. And if it's not, staying with your company, like, start building something that's completely yours your skills, your vision, your timeline, your success and if that's you, if you're like, okay, yeah, I have some ideas or I've already started something on the side. I just need help scaling it.
