On October 12, 2000, the USS Cole, a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, was attacked by Al-Qaeda operatives during a routine refueling stop in Yemen. The suicide bombing tore a massive hole in the ship’s hull, killing 17 American Sailors and injuring 39 more.
