Please welcome with me Dr. Marc Schaefer from Germany. Marc has discovered his passion to travel at a young age and started combining his career in science with the opportunity of exploring different countries and cultures. As the leader of the National Reference Laboratory of Bee Diseases in Germany, Marc is working on the global issue of bee health.

In this episode, Marc shares his personal journey—his love for traveling, especially through Asia, and how his deep curiosity about nature led him to a career in science. His first hands-on experience with honey bees began during a research project in South Africa, which set the foundation for his work today.

We dive into the alarming threats facing honey bees worldwide, particularly the devastating impact of the varroa mite and the deformed wing virus, which are wiping out bee colonies. Marc explains how habitat loss is another major challenge, with shrinking natural spaces affecting pollinators everywhere. Interestingly, we discuss how some bees—like those in Africa—have developed resistance to varroa, while isolated regions remain free from the infestation.

Marc also highlights the power of international collaboration among scientists working to protect bees. From sharing knowledge across borders to developing more resistant bee populations, efforts are underway to tackle this crisis. We explore fascinating solutions like artificial insemination of bees and more.
