I was thinking today about how God holds us all together and was reminded of a time a few years back when I had a pretty rough encounter with a horse.
I was riding around the arena during a lesson when the horse I was on suddenly got spooked. I was bucked off, flew over his head, and landed with a crash on the ground—hitting my head, breaking my collarbone, and pulling ligaments in my knee.
It was a nasty break. After months of waiting for my shoulder to heal, the specialist told me there was no improvement. My collarbone was still broken, and he suggested waiting a few more weeks to see if anything changed. If not, I’d need surgery to put a plate in to hold the bones together.
Sitting in the doctor’s office, I remember praying and feeling God whisper to my heart, “It’s going to be fine. It’s going to be okay.” Then, I saw a picture in my mind of Jesus holding my bones together with His fingers.
The verse “He holds all things together” came to mind:
For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things were created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together. (Colossians 1:16–17)
As I meditated on that verse and visualized Jesus literally holding my bones together, I began to feel at peace. I walked out of the doctor’s office still in a sling but filled with new confidence that Jesus was holding me together and it was going to be okay.
A few weeks later, I had a follow-up appointment. To the specialist’s surprise, the new X-ray showed my collarbone had fused perfectly, and I was given the all-clear.
God knows exactly what we are going through. He offers His grace and mercy when we need it most, especially when we feel like our lives are falling apart or we’re desperate for a breakthrough.
Hebrews 4:16 says:
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
What an incredible promise! The God of the universe invites us to approach Him with confidence because His grace is enough. He promises mercy and help in every situation—whether it’s a medical emergency, financial struggle, relationship issue, or anything else.
The word “help” in this verse comes from the Greek word boetheia, originally a nautical term used by sailors during storms. When a ship was battered and at risk of breaking apart, sailors would wrap it with ropes or chains to hold it together. This act was called frapping, and it kept the ship intact through the pounding waves.
In the same way, God’s love and grace are like those ropes that bind us together. His power holds us intact through life’s storms. No situation or challenge can destroy us when Jesus is holding us together.
That’s what it means when the Bible says, “In Him, all things hold together.”
Whatever you’re facing, God wants you to come boldly to Him. He promises to give you everything you need to move forward and overcome.
Write down Colossians 1:17. Put it in your journal or on your phone as a reminder: God is holding you together.
Today, remember that He’s got you and He’s got this.
