Never underestimate a penny: how God shows up.
I’ve been thinking about how God shows up recently and how often we find ourselves waiting for the big miracles, the big breakthroughs, or the grand answers to our prayers. We set our eyes on the horizon, hoping to see a mountain move, a sea part, or a dream come true in a single moment.
But what if the real beauty and growth in our lives lie not just in those mountain-top moments, but in the seemingly insignificant and everyday blessings that God sprinkles along our journey?
Take, for example, the story of George Mueller. I love reading about his life. He was a man known for his unwavering faith in God’s provision.
Once, he prayed earnestly for a large sum of money to support the orphanages he ran. While praying, a little boy approached him and offered him a penny. It might have been easy for George to overlook that penny, dismissing it as too small to make a difference.
Instead, George thanked God for that penny. He celebrated it as a sign of God’s faithfulness, believing it was a seed from which greater provision would grow. He didn’t underestimate it, toss it aside, or forget about it. He praised and thanked God for even the little thing.
Incredibly, George Mueller cared for over 10,000 orphans during his lifetime and provided education to over 120,000 children through 117 schools. Many times, food donations arrived unsolicited just hours before they were needed. George never asked for financial support or went into debt. He trusted that God would provide—and He did.
Another story is that of Elijah, who prayed fervently for rain after a three-year drought. Each time he prayed, he sent his servant to look toward the sea. For six times, the servant returned saying there was nothing. But on the seventh time, the servant saw a tiny cloud—the size of a man’s fist—on the horizon.
Elijah recognized that small cloud as a sign of God’s answer. He praised God for it as though it were already a downpour. And soon, an abundance of rain came.
These stories remind us to celebrate the small signs of God’s provision. Don’t disregard the pennies or the tiny clouds. Each one is a seed of the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for.
When we give thanks for the small wins and blessings, we train our hearts to trust in God’s goodness, even in the waiting. From little things, big things grow.
So today, take a moment to look around. What “pennies” or “tiny clouds” have you been overlooking? Praise God for every blessing—big or small—and watch how He turns those small beginnings into something extraordinary.
Have a great day, and remember: from little things, big things grow.
