Matt Haycox
I contacted over 400 people in Singapore, sending them all a contact request. And then on the SEO side, probably sent out another 100 messages there as well. And over the weekend I've actually been getting some responses from people and I reckon I've probably set ten Zoom calls up for the week ahead.
00:00:20:10 - 00:00:42:09

Guys, Matt Haycox here on Matt Haycox Daily Podcast and welcome to episode number two. If it's your first time getting to know me. I also have two of the podcasts that you can hear longer form content than this. I’ve got The Matt Haycox Show where every week I do interviews with inspiring people, entrepreneurs, business leaders, celebrities. I also have the HR Zone, which is all about my journey in HR.
00:00:42:13 - 00:01:01:15
Matt Haycox
I'm trying to improve and change the culture in my organizations, but here on Matt Haycox Daily, which is my very quick fire, 3, 4 or 5 minutes a day where I give you a tip, a strategy, a story from the, you know, from the world of business that’s very topical that you can learn in a morning and go and implement in your business or in your life later in the day.
00:01:01:15 - 00:01:15:06
Matt Haycox
So we'll get right on with it because I always want to try and keep this one snappy. And today I'm just going to tell you about what I've been up to this weekend really which is doing outreach on LinkedIn. Now, I've been doing this for two or three reasons. One is I'm trying to recruit some people.
00:01:15:06 - 00:01:32:15
Matt Haycox
I'm trying to recruit in the digital marketing space. I want some new candidates for SEO related roles in our internal agency. And also I'm going to Singapore in a couple of weeks or a month or so. I've never been to Singapore before and I'm looking to go out there because I know there's a lot of money there, a lot of wealth, a lot of wealth managers, a lot of private banking.
00:01:32:15 - 00:01:47:13
Matt Haycox
And I want to go out there. I want to set up some meetings and start to make some contacts out of that. So I've had three or four people who I know make me some introductions over there, but also I've decided to go into LinkedIn, find as many people as I can in the fundraising wealth management, private banking space.
00:01:47:16 - 00:02:07:22
Matt Haycox
So few things to learn from here really. One, we always talk about social media. And I think people tend to think of social media really only as your Facebook and Instagram, but in the business world, I do not think you can overestimate the value of LinkedIn. I think it's a great tool for making connections with the right - with the relevant people in areas that you want to deal with.
00:02:08:02 - 00:02:24:04
Matt Haycox
I've been on LinkedIn for years and years and I've always been quite a heavy user of it. I have one of these paid subscriptions where I pay 30 or 40 quid a month. The main thing it gives me, I think, is the ability to send messages to people who I'm not connected with, but it's great to be able to go out there and search for people.
00:02:24:04 - 00:02:53:13
Matt Haycox
You know, you can do a particular search - so in these two roles. You know, I search people who had SEO in a job title, people who are digital marketing in a job title for Singapore. I was searching for people who are fundraising in their job title or history or people who've got wealth management, private banker, that kind of stuff. And I contacted probably well, not probably, I’ll tell you, I've contacted over 400 people in Singapore sending them all a contact request and just simply saying, ‘Hey, Matt Haycox here.
00:02:53:15 - 00:03:09:06
Matt Haycox
I work in the private finance secured debt, venture capital space, I'm coming to Singapore. I would love to connect with people, maybe get a coffee, maybe get a glass of red wine. But let's link in with me on here. Maybe we can have a quick Zoom call and see if it's worth us meeting. I sent out literally 400 of those messages.
00:03:09:06 - 00:03:27:10
Matt Haycox
And then on the SEO side, I've probably found 50 or 60 people who were semi relevant to what could be good for us in the Leeds area, in the Manchester area and sent out messages to them too. I also - I'm also looking to recruit someone in the kind of journalism space, business journalism, because I want to make a written - almost like a written version of this podcast.
00:03:27:10 - 00:03:46:14
Matt Haycox
I could do with some people with business journalism experience. Probably sent out another 100 messages there as well. And over the weekend I've actually been getting some responses from people and I reckon I've set ten Zoom calls up for the week ahead. So I guess I'm telling you this in a few ways. One is if you want to make contact with people, LinkedIn is the place for you to be doing it in business.
00:03:46:14 - 00:04:07:03
Matt Haycox
Everybody's on LinkedIn. I mean, even if they don't use it much, everybody is on LinkedIn. It’s a great place to be making connections. But secondly, I want you to appreciate the vast number of people I've been contacting. I've not gone on there messaged two or three people. I've gone on there and literally messaged hundreds, I mean, literally hundreds of people because that is the quantity of people that you need to be contacting.
00:04:07:03 - 00:04:26:05
Matt Haycox
That is the level you need to be operating at if you want to get success in anything. If you working in sales... And look, as I’ll always say, you know, everything we really do is sales - it's about volume! If you're sat there, if you are unsuccessful in sales, I believe the only reason is you're not contacting enough people. As long as your product is a reasonable product at a reasonable price,
00:04:26:05 - 00:04:42:21
Matt Haycox
there are some people out there to buy it, and if you're not getting in front of those people, that is because you are not contacting enough people to get in front of. Any time I see my sales guys failing when I have a look at the level of output they're doing, the volume of emails they’re sending, or the volume of telephone calls that they're making.
00:04:42:21 - 00:05:01:00
Matt Haycox
The answer to that number is always the reason they’re failing. I look at some people who I’ve fired from my organizations and I kind of go through their emails after they've left and I see these guys sending out, I'm not joking, three or four or five emails a day. I mean, three or four or five emails a day? I will literally send ten emails when I'm on the toilet in the morning. And while I’m on the toilet in the morning,
00:05:01:00 - 00:05:22:09
Matt Haycox
I'm also writing an Instagram post or two for the day. If I'm in a taxi on the way to work, I'm making untold number of telephone calls. When I'm on a train, I'm emailing or calling or writing a document. And I really do think that anyone who is failing in any particular area is failing because they are simply not committing to the volume of input that they need to do to get success in that field.
00:05:22:11 - 00:05:41:22
Matt Haycox
So whether - if that's a salesman, or if that’s someone learning accounts, if that is someone wanting to play football, wanting to play tennis, wanting to be an actor, an actress, whatever it may be. If you want success, you have to commit to extreme levels of volume. And I've done it myself this weekend on LinkedIn and I've got, you know, already starting to reap the rewards of some people contacting me.
00:05:42:00 - 00:05:58:23
Matt Haycox
I'm sure I'll get some more contacts from that, but ultimately I might make five or six physical meetings. I might make one or two hires. That's one or two hires from hundreds and hundreds of people. If you go online and you send three or four messages, I guarantee you, you're not going to get a response because the hit rate is just not going to be big enough.
00:05:58:23 - 00:06:19:09
Matt Haycox
You know, when you do email marketing, you need thousands of emails out there. When you do telephone marketing, you need hundreds and hundreds of telephone calls out there. Everything to do with success is about volume. So there you go. And go and take that and apply that to whatever your business is today. Whatever your problem is today. I guarantee you, whatever your problem, it can be fixed with more efforts, more input and more volume.
